Look, a ghost! Did you look? If you did, the chances are that you probably saw one, this being October in York and all. If you are visiting our fair city from afar, prepare for a strange month, as York gets a bit weird in October. Officially being the most haunted city in Europe (which we're pretty sure also means the world), York is well catered for in the spooks department, should your visit be one of paranormal exploration. But Halloween is just one night out of the month – the last one, in fact. York has so much

more goingo in October than ghost walks and costumed kids roaming around, and this issue of What's On is your gateway to it all. First up, the Pumpkin Festival at Piglets Adventure Farm deserves a mention, not because of the Halloweenrelated events taking place every weekend in the month (and over half term), but because of the pumpkin slingshot and corn cannon. Yes, those things are very much real and very much incredibly good fun. There

is also lots happening at the National Trust properties in York, like Beningbrough Hall and Goddards. Heads up – the latter of the two will be celebrating National Chocolate Week. Eek! York Maze will reopen in the middle of the month for the decidedly unwholesome Hallowscream, while Illuminating York will light up the city in new and artistic ways for the ever-popular festival at the end of October. So there's lots going on. But, you know, you could always wait at a bus stop, torch in one hand, net in the other, and wait to try and catch a ghost. There's loads of 'em. Best of luck!

While the Viking Centre is transformed following the flooding of 2015, three new exhibitions will be installed in important sites across York.
