Welcome! Welcome indeed, to this November edition of What's On. Knowing 'what's on' during November is very important, as York gears up for what is probably the funnest, cosiest, and most festive time of the whole year. You might have picked this issue up while Halloween pumpkins still litter doorsteps, but the mag contains listings to see you well entertained all the way into December. Obviously, York is pretty famous for having given the world Guy Fawkes, he of Gunpowder plot

infamy, so the 5th November is a pretty big deal here. Prepare to enjoy some of the best bonfires and firework displays in the country, as well as a general relaxed attitude toward airborne explosives. If you're staying in a hotel in the city centre, sleep prior to 11pm might be difficult. Just saying. What is not well known is that York is also responsible for Christmas, or rather the modern version of it. You see, Santa Claus was born in York in 1638, and after drinking a copious amount of Yorkshire Tea, became immortal. Since then he's

expanded his gift-giving charity on a global scale, but moved primary operations to The North Pole, with a loss of hundreds of local jobs. And you thought Rowntrees being bought out by Nestle was bad news... So, as we said, you're very welcome. Enjoy the coming festive cheer because, as you're holding this issue in your hands, you're in the best place on earth to do so.
