Welcome! Happy August everyone! For those who don't Know and might Not be 'from 'round these 'ere parts', the 1st day of August is Yorkshire Day. To Yorkshire people it is the most important day in the calendar, far outmatching Christmas, Easter, an National Cat Health Day (seriously, even that one). If you find yourself in our fair city (the capital of Yorkshire, hence the name) on the 1st, make sure you do these few important things: • Don a flat cap. Everyone wears the traditional hat on Yorkshire Day, even dogs and horses. Make sure you get one. • Never say 'hello'. Despite being the English language's go-to word for... erm... hello, Yorkshire people say 'Aye-up' (pronounced 'e-yup') instead. Make sure you do too. • Don't wear a coat. Although Yorkshire Day is often warm and sunny, there is always a chance it will rain. If it does DO NOT PUT

ON A COAT, nor should you use an umbrella. If you do, you can expect the locals to ask 'woz wrong wi thee? As tha ne'er sin any rare'n befowa?' • Don't mention... The War of the Roses (“we woz robbed!”), London being an interesting and vibrant place, or Margaret Thatcher. Just to be safe. Other than those handy hints, you're sure to have a great day... and month in fact. Here in York we really make the most of the sunshine by putting on even more events than usual, and we are a city known for putting on a lot of events anyway (we were voted City Most Likely to be the Best at Being A Fun City). York Maze is back with a BFG-inspired maze (both in terms of theme and size!), while Micklegate will come alive with the sounds of wheels over cobbles for the Micklegate Run Soapbox Challenge. You can also 'fly' over to see the Elvington Model Air show, and what about a trip a bit out of town to visit Yorkshire Lavender? Whatever you do, 'ave a good 'un, won't tha?

THE SHAMBLES We all know about York's oldest existing street. Right? But do we know it's history? I think we all know the answer and lucky for you, we're here to answer all those Shambles related questions. 900 years ago the shambles used to be a massive butchers. That's right. And this is where we tie in our architectural knowledge. If you observe the pavements of the Shambles, you will see they are raised. This is because a law was imposed in the medieval ages that meant butchers had to remove their offal and blood from the Shambles instead of just creating mess by throwing it onto the street. So some brainbox decided to raise the pavements so the waste would fall off the side and could then be swept away!

14

EVENTS

The Shambles was also the home of Margaret Clitherow, a reformed Protestant who helped hide Catholic priests and teachers. Her secret was eventually discovered and she was stoned to death – lovely! More recently, the Shambles has been creating more history as it saw the Olympic torch grace it's presence in 2012! The Shambles has come a long way since it's days as a butchers as it is now occupied by shops and cafes. Some of the shops and cafes that can be found here include an Earl Grey Tea Rooms and a wonderful jewellers, W Hammonds. You could also stumble across an antique coin collector.
