Retailers have continued trading while work goes on

Words and photos by Dave Barry THE £2.7m transformation of Scarborough’s historic Market Hall is starting to take shape. The mezzanine floor has been installed, completing most of the heavy structural work. The overhaul is due to be completed by the end of February. Now the race is on to attract the kind of businesses which the council would like to see trading in the hall. Expressions of interest have been received from artisans who make and sell cakes, home-made pies, jams, chutneys, etc. “They are exactly the sort of people we want,” says Nick Taylor, investment manager in the council’s economic development department. “We have had a lot of enquiries, two from operators interested in

running cafés on the new floor. We are particularly looking for someone to sell coffee, speciality teas, herbs and spices, etc. “We took the grain of an idea from a market in Altrincham in Cheshire and have added to it quite dramatically”, Mr Taylor says. At the east end, the new floor extends into the hall by about 10 metres, providing space for customers to eat and drink at tables. The space on the ground floor will be used for temporary daily markets and entertainment. “We hope to get a radio station in”, says Mr Taylor. The current phase will be completed by about midNovember, when retailers will be moved into the new area so the rest of the hall can be finished. The café which was in the north-east corner will not return. The owner, Ella Stephenson, has moved to a café at the top of Bland’s Cliff. Mr Taylor says various measures are being planned to increase footfall towards the Market from the town centre and seafront. (Continued on page 2)
