Words and photo by Dave Barry A SCARBOROUGH project has won nearly half a million in the lottery.

Totally Socially, run by the Coast and Vale Community Action (Cavca), has been awarded £497,671 from the Big Lottery’s Reaching Communities fund.

Beginning in February, the three-year programme will build on the success of events held annually in Scarborough since 2014.

It will focus on supporting individuals and groups at grass-roots level to develop projects and activities that

meet the needs they have identified in the places they live.

“We believe in the power of communities and people to change things for the better,” says Cavca chief executive Mel Bonney-Kane. “This award will enable us to give them the support to do so”.

The Totally Socially project will operate in Scarbororough, Filey, Whitby and Ryedale.

“Our vision is of thriving, connected communities where local people are equipped to achieve their potential supported by a vibrant, skilled and sustainable voluntary, community and social enterprise sector”, says social enterprise adviser David Stone.

“Our mission is to act as a catalyst for the support, development and empowerment of communities and the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector; to represent the interests, issues and values of the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector; and to promote cooperation and the achievement of common goals to improve quality of community life for all”.

Cavca is a social enterprise operating in the borough of Scarborough, Ryedale and Hull. Dear Editor, On 13 October, after many months of organising, hard work and dedication from a loyal army of Gallienne’s finest foot soldiers, Scarborough’s first real ale, cider and arts festival opened its doors in the old parcels office in the grounds of the rail station and ran for three glorious days.

Little did anyone know what they were about to unleash.

What materialised was a fantastic festival that was a celebration of the art of brewing combined with a varied demonstration of local artists’ work.

It was all organised and run by a wonderful group of men and women from all walks of life who gave their time and effort freely, with one aim – to make a mark on the social life of Scarborough.

People came from all over the UK to sample the delights of Scarborough. All this hard work was carried out under the watchful eye of Les Gallienne, chairman of the beer festival committee.

It was a total success from start to finish. May I through your newspaper offer my sincere thanks to everyone involved in the festival for all the hard work they put in and say a huge thank you to you all.

Everyone as they left the venue spoke very highly of the event and were all in agreement that this should become one of the social jewels in Scarborough’s crown. Well done to each and every one.

Dear Editor, Last week a friend left me his copy of your newspaper.

As a frequent visitor to Scarborough with many cherished memories over the decades, I was quite interested in the Futurist campaign which seems to be making a few waves in the town. It seems to me that nearly all the utterances and ideas are emanating from Scarborians themselves.

To solve any major problem one must cease looking at things from the inside and take an outsider’s viewpoint.

Firstly: we are not in the 60s or 70s. The Futurist Theatre, when full, in those days was magical, but dismal when not.

Scarborough cannot fill a 2,000-seat theatre – stop dreaming! You already have a theatrical fridge with the Stephen Joseph Theatre – perfect for Last of the Summer Winos and fans of Heartbeat who enjoy Mr Ayckbourn’s gentle wit there and some of the so-called ethnic and experimental dross collectively called community art.

Obviously a clutch of naturists managed to convince the council that an open-air theatre would be wonderful. The only event that could be successfully produced there would be an outbreak of bronchitis. If it was a good idea, the Romans would have built one 2,000 years ago.

Let’s face it, Scarborough is an artistic cul de sac with an absolutely magnificent cricket ground, only a handful of decent restaurants, some of the most run-down pubs and a promenade cluttered with pound shops.

What next? A chain of food banks sponsored

by Morrisons, ‘passed their sell by’ bins, streets of disheveled buskers desperately trying to eke out a tune and fish and chips shops with no cheap far eastern pretend haddock.

What about the Futurist you say? Ok, let us take a logical look at what is required to have a viable theatre.

Firstly it needs a large car park – it hasn’t got one.

City centre shops are closing in their droves because people prefer to shop out of town in places like Monks Cross or at supermarkets with large parking facilities. Secondly it needs bums on seats 24/7 and not just now and again.

We have to accept the fact that more and more people are having less disposable loot to dish around, and theatre tickets are slowly

dropping down the shopping list.

Thirdly: accessibility. There will never be enough locals to make the Futurist viable, so theatregoers will have to be attracted from the hinterland. Another exciting slog on the A64 or shall we shell out our dosh on a lumbering, draughty old train? Let’s not bother.

All right you cynical old goat, I hear you say.

What hair-brained scheme have you come up with, Mister?

One: sell the theatre to some wealthy developer (probably a southerner) and let him build swish terraced housing similar to stacked American condominiums, with a sun terrace and a small garden in front of each one and a dedicated exclusive underground car park.

Two: with the revenue from the sale of the theatre, build a large, state of the art ecofriendly multifunction building, with a 500-seat theatre, fitted with removable seats which can be raised with pneumatic jacks to give a rake.

And a removable stage which can be altered to suit any type of production or presentation.

The building could have another large building joined to it which could be annexed to form one very large building.

All this flexibility could lend itself to sporting events, plays, cycle fitness training, etc.

And as there are no exhibition / conference centres on the east coast, from Hull to Teeside, and with Harrogate outpricing itself: lots of accommodation is available.

It would be perfect (as long as you don’t get the council marketing it). Can you imagine?

A venue to hold 300 to 3,000. One week a trade show, next week a play followed by a conference. Even two events at the same time, all with smart partitioning.

Three: no need to build a large car park – there already is one: Seamer Road park and ride which is busy during the day and empty on a night. The adjacent land is large enough to build a golf course, never mind a huge multipurpose building. lt baffles me why there isn’t a platform for trains to whisk the park and ride users into town, easing the congestion that already exists. Does a bus company have too much of a say?

I could waffle on for yonks about the subject but if my witterings stimulate any further discussions and lead to any positive action, then good. If not, then keep wallowing in nostalgic mediocrity.

Dear Editor, Many thanks for giving us your support with the article in last month’s Scarborough Review.

The Christmas concert on 4 December at St. Columba’s Church in memory of Rev Stephen Drury was well attended and the sum raised for Cancer Research was £826.

This was £726 in ticket sales plus a £100 donation, making £826, a great total.

Dear Editor, I write with regards to recent features and letters on the future of the Futurist Theatre.

At a full council meeting on 9 January, our 50 councillors will finally decide on the initial proposal to demolish the theatre taken by eight councillors in 2014. £4m has been earmarked in the council’s 2016 financial strategy for the regeneration of the Futurist site. But this is the best guess scenario available at the time for the demolition of the theatre (and 62.9% of the feedback provided disagreed with this money being spent).

The final cost implications are only to be made available in the agenda for the January meeting.

One of the key roles of councillors is to effectively represent the interests of their wards and of individual constituents. But how can they understand which option their ward prefers without canvassing their constituents when all the figures are eventually available?

Surely for such a significant development project there should be a full public consultation when all the facts are known?

Do not the residents of Scarborough, who are expected to pay this £4m, have a right to express their opinion based on full details of the pros and cons of demolition or refurbishment?

If a decision is made on 9 January, I trust you will publish in your paper how each councillor voted, in addition to the result.

Chilly dip and Viennese sounds on new year’s day

by Dave Barry THOUSANDS of people will head to Scarborough’s south bay on Sunday - new year’s day - for two popular events which kick off 2017.

The 23rd annual dip in the chilly North Sea is a big fundraiser for the Lions, who organise it. Over the years, it has raised thousands of pounds in collections.

Between 80 and 100 brave souls wear fancy dress as they charge down the beach between two lines of spectators. Some of the dippers are not completely sober.

From 10.30am, they will register at the rowing club, where they change into their costumes.

Ar 12.30am, they will assemble at the top of the beach, next to the lifeboathouse, where the mayor, Cllr Simon Green, will judge them and award prizes for the best male, best female and

best group.

A few hours later – at 3pm - the Spa Orchestra’s traditional new-year concert is due to begin at the Spa Grand Hall.

The programme features waltzes and polkas by Johann Strauss, his family and other composers.

At the end of the summer season, the 10 members of the ensemble leave Scarborough to play in orchestras in London, Glasgow, Manchester and Leeds.

New sport complex on target for summer opening

Words and photos by Dave Barry COUNCILLORS and the media donned wellies and helmets for a muddy tour of the £15m sport complex being built on the south side of Scarborough.

Contractors Willmott Dixon are making good progress on the football ground, swimming pool and sport hall.

The company, which also built the neighbouring University Technical College and Coventry University buildings, will hand the site over to its client, Scarborough Council, in the spring.

The authority, in partnership with Everyone Active, aims to open the complex in the summer.

Scarborough Leisure Village, as it will be known, will contain Scarborough Athletic football club’s new 2,000-seat ground, a 25-metre, eight-lane swimming pool, a learner pool, a four-court sports hall, a 60-station fitness suite, a multi-use room and an outdoor multi-use games area.

The pool building is what’s known as an Olympic legacy. It was originally built in London for the 2012 games then dismantled.

The non-corrosive white steel and other elements were put into storage and are now being reassembled at the new sport complex.

The new complex will replace the sports centre in Filey Road and the swimming pool at Northstead. Both are being operated by Everyone Active.

About 200 workers have been employed on the three Willmott Dixon sites.

The councillors who were given a tour of the sport-complex site were Bill Chatt, Derek Bastiman, Joe Plant and Mike Cockerill.

Cllr Bastiman, the council leader, said: “There have been those who said this project would never happen, but we and our partners have never lost sight of our ultimate goal, which is to create a first-class leisure facility for local people and a new football ground for Scarborough Athletic FC and other sports and community clubs and groups.

“We eagerly await the opening, which, without a doubt, will be a much-celebrated milestone in the history of sport and leisure in our borough”.

A taxi, a police car or a hearse

The choice is yours, says drink-drive widow Words and main photo by Dave Barry A WOMAN whose husband was killed by a drink-driver has made an impassioned appeal in Scarborough.

Lorraine Allaway’s life was turned upside down when a drunk man ploughed into her other half, who was riding a motorbike.

Bob Allaway, 46, was on his way to meet Lorraine at her terminally-ill sister’s bedside when he was hit head-on. He died at the scene.

Andrew Crook, 48, from Swinnow in Leeds, had driven his car across double unbroken white lines onto the wrong side of the road.

A roadside breath test revealed he had nearly two and a half times the legal limit of alcohol in his system.

He was jailed for four years and eight months and banned from driving for five years and eight months.

Lorraine was devastated; her world fell apart.

“It is impossible to find the words to describe how we feel about Bob’s death”, she said. “He was my soulmate and is the first thing I think about in the morning and the last thing I think about at night. It is hard to accept that he is gone, as he still had so much to give.

“He didn't deserve to die in the way he did, especially that day when we as a family were already prepared for the loss of my sister, who died one hour later from cancer. This is without doubt the hardest and most painful experience of my life.

“It has broken his mother’s heart. Bob is missed not only by me and my family but

also by his many friends who are missing his presence and sense of humour greatly and will do for years to come, especially at the many charity events that he could have been counted upon to join in, as his alter ego Freddie Mercury [in the I Want to Break Free video].

“Over the past seven months I have heard many of his friends state he was one in a million and once met never forgotten”.

Lorraine battled through the grief and decided to try and reduce the number of casualties caused by driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

She is supporting a police crackdown by appearing in a police film and touring the county, imploring people not to drink and drive.

The campaign launch, in Scarborough, was attended by traffic sergeant Andrew Morton of North Yorkshire Police's roads policing group, who said: “The heartache and agony that Lorraine and her family have been through since Bob’s death is unimaginable”.

In the film, Lorraine speaks bravely and openly about the experience of losing Bob and what life has been like since his death.

Lorraine said: “If this film stops one person from getting behind the wheel of a car after they have been drinking or taking drugs, and causing the devastation that my family have experienced, then I will be happy.

“If you have been drinking or taking drugs you have alternatives. Take a taxi or a bus or walk. The choice is yours. Either way, it’s

better than a police car because you have killed someone or a hearse because you’ve killed yourself. The last thing your family needs is a police officer knocking on your door to say ‘I’m terribly sorry to tell you but your loved one is dead”.

Whether at least one person resisted the urge to drink-drive because of the campaign is impossible to say. But, unbelievably, the latest statistics suggest that many people simply don’t care.

In the first 20 days of the campaign, county police made 64 arrests for drink-driving and 25 for drug-driving. This represents a 30% increase on arrests made a year earlier.

Stuart Williams, 36, of Wigginton, near York, was arrested on the first day of the campaign with three and a half times the legal limit of alcohol in his body.

At York magistrates, he was banned from driving for 27 months, ordered to pay an £85 victim surcharge and given a seven-week curfew between the hours of 7pm and 7am.

Sgt Morton, who joined Lorraine at the police roadshow in Scarborough, said: “It’s

extremely disappointing to see that the messages about the dangers of drink and drug driving are ignored by some.

“North Yorkshire Police are committed to identifying, arresting and prosecuting drink and drug drivers and getting them off the road. The number of arrests made so far in the campaign reflect the fact that we are out on the roads and targeting those that choose to flout the law.

“I’d like to thank Lorraine for her bravery and agreeing to support our campaign. The tragic thing is that Bob did not have to die in this way, at the roadside due to the selfish actions of a man who was nearly two and a half times the legal limit for alcohol”. n The nine-minute film can be seen at https://youtu.be/J9oANWGZa0U.

Words and picture by Mike Tyas POLICE are appealing for witnesses and information about a robbery in Scarborough.

At about 11.25pm on Friday 28 October, a woman was walking along Colescliffe Road, Barrowcliff, carrying a crate of beer and carrier bags.

She was approached by a group of people, including a man, a woman and a large number of young people.

The man asked if he could buy a can of beer but when the victim refused and tried to leave, the man grabbed her from behind and tried to snatch one of the carrier bags. The bag ripped, and the group fled.

Despite extensive enquiries, police have not yet been able to identify the suspects. The investigation is ongoing.

POLICE in Scarborough are urging homeowners to protect their property over the new year.

Although the police say Scarborough is a safe place, there have been a number of burglaries in the area recently, prompting residents being advised to take extra steps to ensure their properties are secure and avoid their new year being ruined by crime.

DC Jon Kenworthy, of Scarborough Police, said: ‘Scarborough residents should be reassured that they live in a very safe place, and any burglaries will be taken extremely seriously and robustly investigated.’

The officer said a secure home will reduce the chance of being burgled.

He added: ‘Make sure windows and doors are locked, and keys removed from sight, every time you leave the house.

‘When you go out at night, make it appear that someone is home. Leave a light on, pull the curtains – even consider a radio on a timer switch.

‘If you’re going away for the new year, cancel any deliveries and inform trusted neighbours so they can keep an eye on

your property.

‘Dispose of packaging carefully by breaking it down before putting it in the bin.

‘Empty boxes left outside can advertise that you have expensive new goods inside.

And ensure your home contents insurance adequately covers any additional items you have in your home at this time of year.

‘I would also ask people to register themselves on North Yorkshire Community Messaging so they can receive updates on crime in their area and crime prevention advice.

‘By following this advice, we hope you will have a very enjoyable and safe new year.’

Words and pictures by Mike Tyas MORE than 6,000 children had a smile on their faces at Christmas thanks to the love of people across the Scarborough area.

Underprivileged children in the Ukraine received shoeboxes packed full of toys and other goodies after they were donated by the public across our region to Operation Christmas Child, run by international Christian charity Samaritan’s Purse.

Volunteers at the Scarborough warehouse on Hopper Hill Road processed 9,090 boxes in total, almost a thousand more than last year.

That total included 2,900 boxes from the Hull area that were processed by the Scarborough team.

Local co-ordinator Ros Dyson shed a tear as she waved off the lorry that headed for the Ukrainian capital of Kiev.

The occasion marked the end of her 15 years heading up the Scarborough operation.

She said ‘It was an extremely emotional moment.

‘I felt very humble and privileged to have been able to do this role.

‘I can’t begin to count the number of people that have been involved with Operation Christmas Child in the Scarborough area over the years, but they all have been totally amazing – we couldn’t have done it without them.’

The consignment from the Scarborough processing hub was originally planned to go to Belarus but a logistical problem meant a switch in destination.

The Polish lorry driver, Krzysztof Chwedorczuk, 34, said he was ‘happy’ to be taking such a consignment.

In very good English, he said: ‘I have two young daughters in Poland who get gifts at Christmas.

‘I am happy to be driving my lorry full of shoeboxes because so many more children will be able to have a present.

‘There must be many good people in your area.’

The 909 cartons full of shoeboxes were loaded on to the lorry by a team working for the Community Payback project.

‘They were wonderful. They did such a good job,’ said Ros.

• The journey from Scarborough to Kiev took four days. The lorry was due to travel about 1725 miles, through France, Germany and Poland before being taken on to the Ukraine by a second driver.

• More than 85,000 shoeboxes were sent from the 12 processing centres in the Yorkshire and North East region.

• Estimated figures suggest the UK sent 875,000 Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes to needy children this year.

Tribute paid to ‘extraordinary’ shoebox woman Words and picture by Mike Tyas A GLOWING tribute has been paid to the Scarborough woman who has masterminded Operation Christmas Child in the town for the last 15 years.

Ros Dyson stepped down as area co-ordinator for the international Christian charity Samaritan’s Purse after watching a lorry crammed with shoeboxes start its journey to deliver more than 9,000 Christmas gifts for underprivileged children to the eastern European country of Ukraine.

The lorry set off from the temporary warehouse on Hopper Hill Road used by the charity as a hub during November where 70 volunteers had processed boxes that were compiled and donated by hundreds of people throughout the region.

the best,’ said Ian Proudler, the Yorkshire and North East regional manager for Samaritan’s Purse, who has worked alongside Ros on the annual collection for the last three years.

‘Ros comes from farming stock on the North Yorkshire Moors and has a real ‘can do’ attitude.

‘The number of boxes sent and processed from Scarborough has gone up in recent years and that is the team responding to Ros’ positive approach.’

Mr Proudler oversees the running of 12 processing centres, from Hexham in the north to Huddersfield in the south, and says the Scarborough and district centre now plays a ‘massive part’ in the charity’s regional operation.

He said: ‘We had more than 8,000 boxes processed here last year and over 9,000 this time. Scarborough and district makes a magnificent contribution – and it’s down to people like Ros and her volunteers.

‘Ros has grit, determination, is always positive and does not give in - and she prays.’

A logistical problem meant that the lorry carrying the shoeboxes arrived five days later than scheduled and the destination venue switched from Belarus to the Ukraine, but that failed to knock Ros, 70, out of her stride.

Mr Proudler said: ‘There was an issue with the lorry not coming when it should have done but Ros said “OK, we will solve this”. She can get around people, knows how to keep them onside and keeps smiling even when it’s hard to do so.

‘That takes a lot of character and that is what Ros has. She’s a committed Christian. When she completes something, she gives the glory to the Lord and does not claim it for herself.

‘That’s a Christian characteristic that is so powerful.’

Mr Proudler also paid tribute to the work of Ros’ husband Eon. ‘Over the years Eon and Ros have journeyed all over the Scarborough area collecting thousands of shoeboxes,’ he said. ‘They have done fantastic work together.

‘Eon has been an absolute backbone for Operation Christmas Child while Ros has been driving it from the front.’

Muddles, Puddles and Sunshine is an activity book offering practical and sensitive support for bereaved younger children.

Beautifully illustrated, it suggests a

helpful series of activities and exercises accompanied by the friendly characters of Bee and Bear.

Several copies have been donated to the hospice by Skipton Building Society via the community fund its branches operate, says Jayne Roberts, a customer adviser at the Scarborough branch.

Call of duty drives mayor’s recovery Words and picture by Mike Tyas A STRONG sense of duty drove Scarborough’s mayor to get back on his feet after recent serious illness.

Like all of us, Cllr. Simon Green is looking forward to a healthy 2017 but he has more reason than many to welcome the turn of the year.

The mayor had emergency abdominal surgery in September and was out of action for almost two months before he felt fit enough to return to the role that he is proud to perform.

‘I’m looking forward to better health and getting back to everything that I would normally be able to do,’ the mayor told The Review.

Cllr. Green, 71, said he was now ‘80%’ along the road to recovery following his recent illness and operation that came ‘out of the blue.’

He said: ‘I attended a function on a Monday night. When I got home, I felt really unwell and I was in a lot of pain – probably the worst I’ve had in my life.’

Instead of ringing for an ambulance, the mayor drove himself to Scarborough Hospital and was immediately seen by doctors in accident and emergency.

Following a seven-hour operation the following morning, Scarborough’s mayor spent three days in intensive care and another week on the wards before being released home, only to return into hospital a few days later due to an infection.

The mayor said he was full of praise for the skill of the surgeons and the nursing care.

He added: ‘We all too often hear people criticising the NHS. We do not hear good reports and success stories.

‘I was fortunate to have a team of highly-

skilled surgeons. The care I received was exemplary, the hygiene was of a high standard and the food was delicious. They are using James Martin’s hospital recipes again and I certainly regained my appetite.’

The mayor said his process of recovery was helped by the number of get well messages.

‘I received a tremendous amount of cards and emails wishing me well,’ he said. ‘I can’t tell you how nice it was to receive them – it gave me such a boost.’

A retired farmer who lives with his wife Val at the Stained Glass Centre in Killerby, the mayor said he had been champing at the bit to return to civic duty.

He said: ‘As mayor I have a responsibility to do a job and I don’t like not doing it. I felt I was letting people down.’

However the mayor said he had been determined to get back on his feet for the Remembrance weekend commemorations in November as well as getting back to council business.

He added: ‘I went to a full meeting of council which looking back I probably shouldn’t have done as I was still a bit shaky.

‘I have to say that everybody I met at the council, including the leader, urged me not

to come back too early and take my time to convalesce.

‘They were very good standing in for me and my deputy, Martin Smith and his wife Cherry, did a brilliant job while I was off.’

The mayor reflected that he has met so many ‘wonderful’ people throughout the borough during the first half of his term in office.

He said: ‘I’m a member of the Rotary Club of Scarborough so I know quite a lot of what is happening around town, but being mayor has really opened my eyes.

‘It has been a privilege to meet so many wonderful people of Scarborough, Whitby and Filey and see what they do and how kind, caring and resourceful they are.

‘My theme for the year is ‘Better Together’ and I have seen this working when I visit community groups around the borough.’

The mayor was looking forward to spending the festive season at home, spending time with his three children and seven grandchildren.

He said: ‘I really enjoy this time of year when families spend time together.’

Cllr. Green is in his third spell as a councillor, after winning election in 1999, and then again in 2011 and 2015. He represents the Conservative party for the Cayton parish.

‘Happy’ tree festival Tour chief passionate about town finish enjoyed by many Words and pictures by Mike Tyas A CHRISTMAS tree festival brought a ‘happy’ feeling to a Scarborough church.

The fundraising event was held at St Mark’s, Newby where more than 30 trees were decorated by local organisations, charities and people to reflect the theme of a Christmas carol or song.

A series of events ran alongside the display of trees, including a Santa breakfast, carol concerts, an Advent service, visits from local schools and pensioners, and a film night showing ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’. The festival was opened by Scarborough’s mayor, Cllr Simon Green.

Organiser Carol Hagan said the sparkling trees transformed the look of the church.

She said: ‘The church looked happy – it looked full of light.

cold, empty places. But because of all the twinkling lights and all the joy on the faces of people as they looked at the trees, it felt a very comfortable, welcoming place.

‘I think everybody who came enjoyed it. A lot of people were mesmerised by the creativity that went in to decorating the trees.’

The festival was part of St Mark’s on-going fundraising campaign to raise an estimated £800,000 to replace their existing church hall, build an extension with a café to the back of the church, and also pay for repairs and maintenance.

The church recently distributed a fundraising leaflet to more than 3,000 houses in the Newby parish advertising its fundraising activities.

The festival itself raised £2,000.

Carol added: ‘I would like to thank everybody who came along and supported it and all those who helped stage it. Some of the days were really long but it was all worthwhile.’

Words by Mike Tyas THE man behind the cycling success of the Tour de Yorkshire is sure Scarborough will put on a ‘fantastic’ show when it races into town again.

Scarborough will host what is likely to be another thrilling stage finish, this time on the first of the three-day Tour de France legacy race, on Friday 28 April. The race starts outside the Bridlington Spa on South Marine Drive.

‘Scarborough has taken the Tour de Yorkshire to its heart in a big way,’ Sir Gary Verity told The Review.

‘The crowds we’ve experienced in the town over the last two years have been absolutely tremendous.

‘Those grassy banks along the North Bay provide a spectacular amphitheatre where thousands of fans watched the action reach a gripping conclusion.

‘The people of Scarborough are passionate about this race as well. I’m sure they and the town will put on a fantastic show.’

Fingers were crossed that Scarborough might host a repeat of the 2016 finale of the event but the honour for 2017 goes to Fox Valley in Sheffield.

Nevertheless, Scarborough can expect a massive influx of cycling fans and another boost to the tourism and hotel trade.

Scarborough Hospitality Association secretary Ged Wilcock said his members, in hotels, bed and breakfast and guest house accommodation, would play their part in making the big day a success.

He added: ‘The additional visitors the Tour will bring on top of the May Day Bank Holiday weekend will be great for the town.

‘Rest assured, our members will be doing their bit to make Friday 28th April 2017 a carnival day in Scarborough and the Tour de Yorkshire 2017 an outstanding success.’

Making a similar pledge was Cllr. Derek Bastiman, Leader of Scarborough Council.

He said: ‘We’ll be pulling out all the stops to showcase the Yorkshire coast at its very best.’

Figures released by the council and Welcome to Yorkshire suggested the local economy benefitted

by Welcome to Yorkshire around £1m this Chief Executive year as a result of Sir Gary Verity. the Tour’s visit.

The first stage next April is 173 km (107 miles) in length and includes three ‘King of the Mountain’ climbs – Garrowby Hill, Goathland and Robin Hood's Bay, and two sprints, at Pocklington and Whitby Abbey.

The Tour was won earlier this year by Dutchman Thomas Voeckler in front of 30,000 fans around North Bay, but organisers are hoping the sport’s biggest names may contest the 2017 version.

One of them could even be three-time Tour de France winner Chris Froome.

‘We’ve started talking to him and we’ll keep talking to him,’ said Sir Gary.

Froome has not taken part in the Yorkshire race yet as it clashes with the Tour de Romandie – a favourite warm-up event for the Tour de France – which also runs over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend.

The second day of the Tour de Yorkshire starts over the newly rebuilt Tadcaster Bridge, spanning the River Wharfe, after it was damaged during last winter’s severe floods, effectively splitting the town in two.

The action concludes in Harrogate.

The final day begins in Bradford and 195 (121 miles) weary kilometres later finishes in Sheffield. The last leg is expected to be the toughest of the three days, with four climbs during the last 13 miles.

Fighting crime in Futurist campaign approaches decision day your neighbourhood Words and photo by Dave Barry

Words and photos by Dave Barry A FILM about the campaign to save Scarborough’s Futurist Theatre has been projected onto its façade.

Made by Andy Hylton, it features campaigners talking about the effort to rescue the looming hulk from the demolition threatened by the council.

On 9 January, a full meeting of the local authority, with all 50 members, will determine whether or not to ratify an ‘in-principle’ decision made by eight of them two years ago, to bulldoze the theatre.

Campaigners have been handing out flyers in the town, to inform people who are unaware of the threat.

“Our media publicity campaign is to basically reach out to the local people who don't necessarily use social media and aren't aware of what the Save the Futurist campaign are looking to achieve”, said a spokesperson.

“This is not a rally of any sort, just good old-fashioned public awareness from people who care about our town’s heritage”, the spokesperson said. “It’s an awareness raising thing.

“It is a vital time for us whilst we are in the throes of setting up a charitable trust to reach out to as many people as possible”.

After dark, for a couple of hours, Mike Lynskey projected the film onto the fading yellow cladding, in a loop.

In the film, actor Ken Kitson appeals to local tradesmen and women to provide their services for free to renovate the Futurist, if it can be pulled back from the precipice. The campaign has been joined by Debbie Radcliffe, a consultant community planner with JTP, a firm of architects and planners.

In a letter to council leader Derek Bastiman, Radcliffe writes: “It is gratifying to think that so many arts-related improvements have been implemented during the past 14 years”. She refers in particular to the regeneration of the Rotunda Museum, Woodend and the Open-Air Theatre.

“Scarborough's reputation as a cultural town continues to rest to a large extent on the Stephen Joseph Theatre and Sir Alan Ayckbourn's creative output.

“So, it is with considerable dismay that I hear there is a proposal to demolish the Futurist and replace [it] with a fun-fair attraction including a roller-coaster and a ‘space-shot tower’. This is totally inappropriate in terms of its setting – next to the historic public gardens and adjacent to the streets of the old town”.

by Dave Barry A STREET collection by the Scarborough Friends of Martin House raised £838.

Nine volunteers each spent an hour or two accepting donations from people in the pedestrian precinct.

They were accompanied by a barrel organ built into the back of a seven-ton truck. It was loaned by the Scarborough Fair Collection at Lebberston.

Martin House is a children’s hospice at Boston Spa, near Leeds.

“There are quite a few families in Scarborough who have need of their help,” says Clive Townsend, one of two deputy treasurers of the Friends, along with Denise Ward.

“We meet every three or four months at the Rivelyn Hotel,” says Clive. “Our next meeting is in February. We have guest speakers and fundraising sales.

THE Neighbourhood Watch scheme is being revived in Scarborough, following a hiatus.

Martin Whelan has taken on the role of NW coordinator, succeeding the late Adrian Dolan.

Mr Whelan says: “I have noticed a reticence from past members who have felt neglected and a little discontented with matters of late.

“Membership always seems to diminish in NW when the problems encountered are no longer prevalent”, Mr Whelan says.

“However it is important to be vigilant and to spot any change in trends and activities in your area. It is easier to nip problems in the bud rather than shut down an established activity”.

About 10 schemes are operating in the Scarborough area. Their group names are Trafalgar Square, Castle, Fenby Gardens, Holbeck, Peasholm, Haybrow, St Joseph’s Close (off Coldyhill Lane), North Corner (Tennyson Avenue, Moorland Road, Trafalgar Road), Weaponness Road, Cromwell Road.

Mr Whelan says: “I am sure there are more watches out there and would ask coordinators to get in touch”.

NW schemes have access to their local PCSOs who are being trained to help them. They use a community messaging scheme. They are supplied with leaflets, booklets and advice on security and anti-social crimes.

At NW events, they are covered by NW insurance and can use a banner and literature to populate a stand. Some house-insurance policies are sympathetic to NW membership.

Mr Whelan is pictured with Una Beaumont, vice-chairman of the Residents and Friends of Trafalgar Square, one of the many groups connected to NW.

NW is a partnership intended to bring people together to make their communities safer.

It involves the police, local authorities, other voluntary organisations and individuals and families who want to make their neighbourhoods better places to live.

Lantern parade brings colour and magic to a wintry night The parade sets off from the park café

Words and photos by Dave Barry A COLOURFUL lantern parade lit up Peasholm Park on a cold, wintry evening.

Animated Objects, which was behind it, had invited local people to contribute by making a lantern.

Community groups and local schools, including Northstead and St Peter’s, took part, with singing led by Scarborough Community Choir, and seasonal readings.

Some of the lanterns depicted swans and sailing boats, to reflect the park’s features.

The theatre company’s creative director, Dawn Dyson-Threadgold, said the event, Moonlight and Song, celebrated Scarborough’s communities.

Artistic director Lee Threadgold added: “We were delighted with the support from the local community as hundreds of people braved the weather to join us for the evening.

“The lantern parade was beautiful and really

showcased Peasholm Park in the winter, which was our intention,” Lee said.

“It has reaffirmed our belief that there is an appetite among people in the area for community events in public spaces throughout the year.

“As always, there are challenges involved in working outdoors during the winter months but we feel, as this was the first time we had run the event, it went extremely well.

“We would like to thank Arts Council England, Scarborough Council, Create, pupils and staff from Northstead and St Peter's schools, Bill Scott and Scarborough Community Choir, the Pauline Quirke Academy, Chris Gray, the Friends of Peasholm Park and all our wonderful staff and volunteers who made this event possible”.

Words and oil painting by Dav White THE hinterlands of Scarborough are full to the brim with history and legends that are recorded in local stories, local place names and the terms we use to describe the landscape.

Our accounts of St Hilda were written by the Venerable Bede, who describes her great energy, her organisational and teaching skills and her reputation for wisdom. She was sought by princes and kings for her counsel.

And, just as importantly, she spent a great deal of her time looking after the poor. Bede writes, “All who knew her called her 'mother' because of her outstanding devotion and grace”.

St Hilda was a dragon slayer. Legend tells how she herded a plague of snakes at Whitby over the cliff tops to be petrified (turned to stone) on the shore below.

She herded the serpents using jet, renowned for its snake-repelling properties.

The legend is immortalised in the ammonite fossils found in the cliffs at Whitby. Most representations of St Hilda illustrate her holding Whitby Abbey in her arms, with ammonites or curled serpents. The fossil ammonite Hildoceras is named after her.

St Hilda was the founding abbess of the monasteries at Whitby and Hackness.

When she died in 680AD, it is reputed that the bells of the monasteries rang out by themselves and visions of her being taken up to heaven by the heavenly host were seen by the nuns at Hackness.

The whereabouts of her earthly remains are unknown, although it is thought she was buried and enshrined as a saint in Whitby before being moved to Hackness and then Glastonbury when the Danes sacked Whitby in 800.

Wise women like St Hilda are endemic to folk law. They were employed as watchers of the wells and beacons (such as those in Seamer and Rudston), the fords and bridges (in Ayton, for example), collecting tolls, advising with counsel and offering tinctures and remedies.

Hack is a woman in black, in any type of bonnet or shawl, employed for short-term work.

Hackness is named in the Domesday Book as Hagnessa. The word hagg appears in many landmarks in the area. A hagg is old dialect for a hanging wood. It is found in the term haggworm, which is Old Yorkshire dialect for adder. Hack is another name for the head of a serpent or dragon. Ness is Old Norse for nose or snout, referring to the shape of the landscape it describes. Old Norse names for dragon and serpent include wurm, wyvn and wvermin, as in pest.

The root meaning of them all is the verb to whorl – to curl or circle round, serpent-like.

The term is used to name some of our hills, outcrops and river bends.

Many old words describing the landscape link its descriptive features with its genius loci.

This term means ‘the atmosphere or prevailing spirit in a place’ or ‘attendant spirit’, like a keeper or caretaker specific to a certain time.

The Romans believed that certain places had a genius loci. They felt the need to contribute their own deities and shrines to the landscape while being careful not to interfere too much with the native shrines if there was no political or military motive.

Around Hackness, we find places like Haggworm Hill on Seamer Moor, Haggland Wood, Haggworm Slack, Worm Sike Rigg and Stoney Haggs Road. Hag is also an abrasive word for an old female who is vicious, malicious and quite the opposite of St Hilda.

The Old Irish origin of the place-name meaning of Ness, as in Hackness, is Princess of the Water. Irish legends often link water

sources, pools and river courses with female deities, much in the same way as the Brigantes or Anglo-Romans did.

Hackness Cross at St Peter’s Church (one of the oldest buildings in the area, predating Scarborough castle) in the village contains Ogham writing. Ogham is an ancient Irish alphabet used by the Picts and quite rare in Yorkshire. This ancient Irish theme links us to Patrick, another saint associated with snakes.

St Patrick banished all the snakes from Ireland and his peer, St Columba, converted the pagan Picts to Christianity.

The Derwent river rises near Lilla’s Cross, possibly named by St Hilda. It then flows down from Fylingdale Moor to snake through Hackness, Forge Valley and Ayton into the peat bogs of the Vale of Pickering. Perhaps more importantly, it then slithers its way inland, not straight out to the sea. This phenomenon adds to the river’s mystery and our ancestors would most likely have been aware of this. The river runs inland to Malton, past the Roman fort Derventio, which may be where the river gets its name. It then flows to Stamford Bridge, joining the river Ouse at Barmby on the Marsh.

The Ouse flows into the Humber which passes Petuaria (Brough), the historical capital of the Parisii tribe, before flowing out to sea. The Derwent encircles the area inhabited by the Parisii.

So we have a river and saint connected through names and language, revered throughout history, feminine in description and linked with serpents or dragons through description and storytelling.

“Many things arouse devotion or feelings of awe”, wrote Carl Jung in Archetypes of the Collective Unconscious. “For instance a church, a city, a wood, a spring, a river and even the moon can be mother symbols. The mother archetype is often associated with fruitfulness and fertility. These images can have a favourable, positive meaning or a dark negative meaning. The nourishing life-giving mother or the devouring, entwining serpent, weighing you down in the deep water”.

AT this time of year you have to get the most out of the precious daylight hours.

The other day we took the dog for a walk just as the day was ending and, though the world was strangely still, the sun was going down with a spectacular splash. Orange and purple light spread across a western sky of pure china blue. Even the giant ash trees along the river were dwarfed by the great drama overhead. And then, as we turned a corner in the path, five swans flew across the sunset in a perfect line. It was, quite literally, breathtaking.

Living here on the Yorkshire coast we are, of course, outrageously blessed by the natural world. In the depths of winter we might forget but it’s all there on our doorstep. And of course the best way to blow away the Christmas sloth, to reinvigorate your mind and body, is to get out to Cayton Bay or Filey or Sandsend or Reighton and fill your lungs against the crash of the surf.

Oh, and while you’re there you might have a look at some pebbles.

Here’s one I picked up at Reighton last week. Doesn’t seem much at first sight but look closer and it’s packed with rugose corals more than 200 million years old. A slice of a Carboniferous coral reef, probably brought over from the Pennines by ice sheets. An object of exquisite beauty.

When he felt his life slipping away at the miserably young age of 25, the poet John Keats wrote that, while he may not have achieved much, he had ‘loved the principle of beauty in all things’. We strive, we get and we spend, but the best thing we can ever acquire is the capacity to appreciate the beauty of the world around us. Sunsets, swans, seas and fossils it’s all there.

Make a promise to yourself this winter, that you won’t let it all pass you by.

Unwanted christmas present?

Mum of two, Mya, talks about the trials and tribulations of parenting.

Help! My toddler won’t stay in bed AS I write this whilst drinking my third coffee of the day (it’s 9am) after what can only be described as another sleepless night with my two-year-old. I wonder how many other parents out there struggle with this issue – and what the ‘right’ thing to do is.

Since I moved Shay into his big boy bed, it’s pretty much the same thing night in, night out: I put him to bed, read a story and creep out when he looks as though he’s asleep, I head downstairs to watch TV and before I’ve so much as chosen a programme to watch, I hear the familiar pitter-patter of a toddler’s feet.

This will continue throughout the night until I eventually give up and let him sleep in my room.

So first things first, I know that Shay needs to be getting around 11 hours in on a night – not something we’re achieving right now to be honest.

I also know that establishing a regular bed time routine is the way to go – we do this, it doesn’t go too badly either.

It’s later when our problems creep out of the woodwork. So for now I’m going to try some of the following techniques and see how I get on: • Praise your child when they stay in bed.

After being in a cot, they may get out of their grown up bed over and over just because they can. If they get up, react calmly but firmly.

Only weeks after representing the national Sea Cadets Corps at the Remembrance weekend commemorations in London, the unit has more reason to feel proud.

TS Scarborough has been named the best in the Sea Cadets’ eastern area, beating off competition from 69 other units while their Leading Cadet, Brandon Palmer, was named Navy Board Cadet for 2017 – the area’s top cadet.

Commanding Officer, Sub-Lieutenant Natalie Davies said the youngster’s ‘exceptional attitude’ gained him the recognition.

She said: ‘Leading Cadet Palmer joined TS Scarborough at 13 and has thrown himself into everything the unit and Corps has to offer, including his numerous voyages offshore on the Sea Cadet Corps flagship TS Royalist, where he is a qualified Watch Leader.

‘Brandon’s exceptional attitude towards his peers, seniors and the role of being a Leading Cadet has been recognised with this appointment.’

The Navy Board Cadets are selected each year from over 14,000 across the country to represent the six regions that make up the Sea Cadets Corps – Northern, Northwest, Eastern, London, Southern and Southwest. Their duties include meeting with the head of the Royal Navy, Admiral Sir Philip Jones.

Former Graham School pupil Brandon, 16, who attends Scarborough UTC where he is studying electrical engineering, physics and maths at A-level, received the accolade from the Captain of the Sea Cadet Corps, Capt.

He said: ‘I was surprised to win.

‘I love being a cadet. I enjoy the experience of being around people, so often they turn into more than friends: they are more like a family.’

TS Scarborough retained the Stephenson Trophy as the best unit in the east region and will go forward to compete for the prestigious Canada Trophy as the best in the country.

The unit’s activities over the year are taken into account along with their annual inspection results, said Sub-Lieutenant Davies.

She added: ‘The awards are a recognition for each and every member of the unit and recognition of all the hard work they put in – and most of all the fun we've had along the way!

‘I'm truly proud of what we do at #teamboro and proud to be the Commanding Officer of the ship.’

• As our little ones get older their imaginations become more sophisticated, this can lead to genuine worry about being in the dark or monsters under the bed. This is a normal part of growing up, don’t be too concerned but be on hand to provide reassurance.

I’m going to be trying the checking routine first. If I hear Shay up and about or crying, I’m going to pat him on the back, tell him everything is ok but that it’s time to go to sleep again. I’ll be attempting to repeat this with slightly longer intervals each time.. persistence is key right?

Words and photo by Dave Barry CUBS and their leaders continued a 30-year tradition of giving Christmas presents to residents of nursing and care homes on the South Cliff.

Scarborough and District Scout Council collected various gifts at its annual carol service at Westborough Methodist Church.

The parcels were taken to the Red Lea Hotel

where the youngsters and adults convened before distributing them.

The practice was established over 30 years ago by assistant district commissioner (ADC) Bonnie Purchon.

Mrs Purchon was joined at the Red Lea by fellow ADCs Colin Adamson and Ian Marshall, and cub leaders Valerie Rowntree, Gloria Dunn and James Walker.

CCTV appeal after fuel theft POLICE in Scarborough have issued a CCTV image of a man they would like to speak to after a car was filled up with fuel but left before payment was made.

The incident happened at Morrison's supermarket filling station, on Thursday, 17 November.

Words and photo by Dave Barry TEN compassionate people spent a few hours writing to political prisoners around the world, just before Christmas.

All were supporters of Amnesty International, whose Scarborough branch staged a Write for Rights session at Bookshelf, in Victoria Road.

Sixty cards were written and posted to people all over the world who are facing a lonely and sad Christmas.

“They will know that people are thinking about them and that they are not alone”, said one of the writers, Wanda Maciusko. “It will give them hope for the future”.

Albert Woodfox, who spent 43 years in solitary confinement for a murder he did not commit, said after his release: “Had it not been for supporters like you, taking part in Write for Rights, I might still be unjustly imprisoned”.

Mrs Maciusko said: “We wrote to Annie Alfred in Malawi, facing danger just because she has albinism; Shawkan in Egypt, imprisoned for taking photos of a peaceful demonstration; Ilham Tohti in China, who was given life imprisonment for speaking out against abuse of the human rights of the Uighurs, an ethnic minority; and Bayram Mammadov and Giyas Ibrahimov, who are in prison and facing trial

after being tortured for spraying political graffiti”.

Mrs Maciusko said: “Many thanks to everyone who wrote cards and made donations.

A CLASS of children from a Scarborough primary school is having an activity holiday next year, thanks to a local charity.

Thirteen pupils from the Thomas Hinderwell Academy in Seamer Road, all aged about 11, will have a big adventure in Skipton in June.

They will go caving, ride in kayaks and canoes, etc.

It’s all about building and developing character, confidence and life skills, says principal Sue Bland.

“We are so grateful to Ourco, it's making a massive difference”, Sue said. “Parents are contributing towards the cost”.

The party will include class teacher Kasey Hill, who has organised the trip and liaised with Ourco.

Ourco, which is short for Our Community, is a registered charity raising money for people in the Scarborough, Filey and Whitby area. Since it was set up in April 2015, about £26,000 has been given away.

Ourco volunteer Dot Nelson visited the school to present a cheque for £2,174.40.

Speaking about Ourco, Dot said: “I am so impressed with the people of Scarborough for all their donations and generosity”.

It was the end of the year and Grandpa was thinking about things. He remembered with pride how Grandma had taken the plunge at the South Bay New year's Dip, and he chuckled as he remembered his own cold water paddle.

They had taken the two grandchildren to the beach at North Bay. As soon as they got there the children wanted to go in the sea, even though it was early Spring and the water would be cold.

The sea, as usual, looked brilliant. White waves splashed on towards the beach. A few children were playing, running in shouting and jumping over the waves, and running out shrieking with delight. The children were having a great time.

One of the grandchildren, the older one, got changed into a swimming costume and ran straight into the sea. The younger one just paddled. Grandma was looking after the bags and the towels. Grandpa stood well away from the splashing waves. He loved watching the children enjoying themselves.

Then, what a surprise he got when they called out to him.

“Come on in Grandpa! Have a paddle! It's great!”

Grandpa looked around. There weren't many grown-ups in the water.

“Come on Grandpa!”

“It's too cold for me!”

“It's okay! Come on!”

Grandpa shook his head, though he began to slowly take off his shoes and socks. Then he pulled up his trouser legs, so they wouldn't get wet. He really didn't want to go in the water. It was cold, okay for children, but not for him.

“Come on Grandpa!”

He walked slowly to the water's edge, just where the waves stopped. He had to be careful because the tide was coming in and sometimes a wave flowed further than you expected. The children came out of the water to fetch him. They held his hands.

“Come on in! Grandpa! Grandpa!”

Grandpa wasn't going any nearer. The children kept shouting. Suddenly other children began to shout with them. Gradually even more children began to shout, and a few adults.

“Grandpa! Grandpa! Grandpa! Grandpa!”

The noise was like a football crowd.

What could Grandpa do? He looked around.

The towels were ready, for when he came out of the water. But he didn't want to go in!

He really didn't want to go in the water. It was cold, okay for children, but not for him.

Then, it seemed as if everyone on the beach was interested. The bathers stopped.

The sandcastle diggers stopped. Even the donkeys stopped. And the counting began!

“Ten, nine, eight, seven....”

Grandpa was beginning to panic.

“Six, five, four ….”

What could he do? He could run away to the toilet! But it was too late, because ….

“Three, two, one ….......ZERO” And, there was silence [except for the waves and the seagulls]. And there was a breath of “Harrrrr” from all as Grandpa, with hands on trouser legs, paddled into the sea, the water up to his ankles. He stayed in for nearly half a minute!

What a noise from the watchers on the beach! Whoops, wohs, yeys, yahs, then ...

“Three cheers for Grandpa!” someone yelled and a full three cheers boomed around the beach. Grandpa, jubilant, raised his hand in triumph. His trouser legs stayed pulled up as he swaggered towards Grandma and the towels. Many were applauding his heroic paddle.

Charity targets isolated military veterans Words and photo by Dave Barry OLDER military veterans experiencing isolation will be targeted by a Scarborough charity in the new year.

Isolation is a common phenomenon among older veterans, says the FirstLight Trust, which aims to reintroduce camaraderie among them.

The charity is about to launch an outreach campaign focusing on the villages around Scarborough, where many forces veterans are believed to live.

The charity supports veterans with any issue, offering information, advice and guidance.

“Wherever possible, we will utilise existing services but seek to fund or provide any other treatment necessary”, explains operations coordinator Victoria Wilkinson.

For example, the charity provides a counsellor who specialises in eye-movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy.

“EMDR is proven to be effective in the treatment of PTSD”, says Victoria. “The NHS cannot fund it for all veterans so FLT is providing it on a weekly basis”.

The charity complements the serious side of its modus operandi with fun endeavours such

as outings, a summer barbecue, a Christmas lunch and other activities. These include a fitness session, an over-60s drop-in and a furniture workshop - participants upcycle old furniture and sell it at the charity’s shop/café in Queen Street.

The charity wants to open a fishmonger in the nearby Market Hall, which is undergoing a £2.7m revamp.

It will be a non-profit-making social enterprise providing veterans with gainful employment.

“FLT has a focus on veteran employment”, says Victoria.

The Veterans Foundation has already chipped

University campus helps plug skills gap

SCARBOROUGH student and mum of two, Natalie Foster, has gained a position at North Yorkshire Law. The second year law student at CU Scarborough is the first student to be taken on by North Yorkshire Law, which has offices in Scarborough and Whitby, thanks to the recently available law course.

Natalie, 34, said: “I always knew I wanted to go into law however my only opportunity before now was to travel to Teesside, and being a working mum this wasn’t practical and I couldn’t afford the expense.

“CU Scarborough’s law course has opened up a huge door for me – it’s been life changing.

It’s not like a mainstream law course, it is as practical as it is theoretical in a number of

“I have gained so much hands-on experience working at North Yorkshire Law and my supervisor Susan Truefitt, who is head of

It is addressing a serious skills gap in the area.

CU Scarborough is set to hold an open day on Saturday, January 7 from 10am to 2pm for prospective students to find out more about the wide variety of courses in career-focused subjects available at the campus.

Words and photos by Dave Barry A NEW project called Community Works is providing vocational opportunities for disadvantaged young adults.

Funded by the Big Lottery, Community Works run practical learning workshops in a variety of vocational skills including plumbing, electrical and woodwork.

“Our learners are encouraged to work with residents in the community, undertaking everyday jobs that help both the young person and the resident”, says administrator Kimmie Avison.

“We help our learners gain new skills and build confidence in a stimulating environment”.

The workshops are run by tutors who have many years’ experience of working with young people.

Support is provided to help learners fulfil their potential and improve their abilities.

Community Works aim to make every learner feel valued through in-depth support and guidance.

Everyone accessing the project has the same opportunities to thrive and improve their prospects.

Twelve-week programmes are followed by work within the community. The work is rewarding and could be anything from a small household task to a larger community project.

The project is aimed at young people aged 1825 who enjoy practical work.

There are no minimum requirements to join and the tuition groups are small and welcoming.

Community Works is part of the Futureworks NY family, sharing the same ethos and beliefs.

“We encourage inclusion and pledge to support all learners, irrespective of background or previous experience”, Kimmie says. “We are keen to establish positive links with residents and community organisations to ensure that the project is a positive experience for everyone involved, while making a difference Robert Deighton and Adam Backhouse with cog-shaped clocks which reflect the Community Works logo within the community.

“We aim to help over 100 disengaged young people and have already filled the first learners workshop, which will start in January”.

Caring customers donate gifts for kids

Toys and other gifts were collected for local children at the town-centre branch of a building society.

Skipton Building Society customers donated various presents.

These were handed over to the Salvation Army which in turn distributed them in

conjunction with Social Services.

“All 90 branches of the Skipton were sent Christmas trees and tags with gift suggestions”, said customer adviser Jayne Robertson.

“We wanted all ours to go locally and we asked the Salvation Army to share them out on our behalf”.

Marathon rescue on lifeboat’s last day Words by Dave Barry, photo by Mick Bayes SCARBOROUGH RNLI’s Mersey all-weather lifeboat undertook a marathon 70-mile rescue on the last day of its 25 years of service.

The coastguard called the lifeboat out to help a stricken fishing boat.

Steering problems disabled the 65-ton, 15-metre Ocean Spray near a gas platform about 35 nautical miles north-east.

The former trawler, which had been fishing for crabs, had no steering and limited propulsion.

Fortunately, the sea was calm and the weather clear, so the boat sat tight until the lifeboat came to its rescue.

The Mersey launched at 11.30am and took nine hours to reach and recover Ocean Spray, with its crew of three.

The return journey was painfully slow, travelling at five knots an hour.

The Mersey was coxswained by Lee Marton, who had been planning to attend his sister’s Christmas party.

The rescue had a poignant air as the lifeboat crew knew that in all likelihood it would be the last shout in the Mersey, after a quarter of a century’s faithful and distinguished service to the town.

The Mersey lifeboat has joined the RNLI’s reserve fleet as a relief lifeboat covering those going in for services, maintenance, etc.

The town’s new Shannon-class all-weather lifeboat entered service on 19 December.

* RNLI volunteer Barrie Evans died in December, following a sudden illness.

Barrie, 78, had organised the lifeboat collection boxes for the last two years.

The RNLI is now looking for someone to take over where Barrie left off. * Scarborough RNLI wants to rebuild its brand-new lifeboathouse – online.

It is looking for people who use the Minecraft computer game, which enables the 3D recreation of buildings and places.

• VIRUSES

It is estimated that more than £670 million is lost to online fraud and scams each year. Many of the victims are older people using the internet for the first time. If that is you, learn about the five main kinds of internet scams.

Computer viruses (or malware) are programmes that can be unintentionally downloaded from email attachments and other files from the internet. They can take over your whole computer, or just scan it to send your personal details to the criminals.

Never open emails from unknown sources and steer clear of websites that look suspicious.

• ONLINE SHOPPING Be careful when entering your credit card info into a website. Ideally, only shop online at trusted sites which use high levels of security like Amazon or the main supermarkets. One thing to remember is, if you don’t see a small padlock icon in the address bar of your browser, don’t enter in any payment details.

• FAKE WEBSITES Fraudsters can create fake websites that look like real sites you might need to visit.

The criminals will try to direct you toward their dodgy sites with unsolicited emails which seem to come from the likes of your bank. If you get an email from your bank out of the blue, never click on the link – call them to check if the email is valid.

The rule of thumb is to never ever send money to someone you don’t know very well, and never share personal details like bank information, your date of birth, pets names and other bits they could use to guess your passwords.

• HEALTH SCAMS If some wonder drug or medicine seems too good to be true... it definitely is. Never buy pharmaceuticals from websites you aren’t familiar with, and if you have a question about something you’ve seen online, ask your GP if it is something that might help.

Oh, and gentleman... there is no such thing as a wonder pill that can make you... ahem... “more impressive”, so don’t waste your money!

Youth worker excited to walk shared path Words and picture by Mike Tyas YOU get a feeling when talking to youth worker Steve Blower that 2017 will be a voyage of discovery for him.

But the fact that the journey will be a shared experience is one of the reasons why he decided to move his young family from Birmingham to start a new life on the east coast.

Steve, 31, is the recently-appointed coordinator of the Christian charity Sidewalk youth project, formed more than 20 years ago by local churches with part of its remit to engage with the youth of the town wherever they chose to hang out.

That excites Steve, particularly the opportunity of walking hand in hand alongside Scarborough’s young people, where all parties learn from each other – and together explore what Steve described as the ‘fullness of life’.

When I asked what that meant, Steve sat back in his chair at the charity’s new office in Gladstone Street to where they recently moved after years at St James Church on Seamer Road, and said ‘good question’.

He said: ‘What’s unique about Sidewalk is that our workers, as well as the young people we are working alongside, are sharing the same journey of discovery – finding out what the world is about – rather than us just trying to lead them’.

In practice that means Steve and his team of volunteers going out at night and spending time with the kids, mainly boys between their early and late teen years, where they meet, whether that’s at Hairy Bob’s skatepark on Marine Drive on a Thursday night, or on

He said: ‘At the skatepark the kids are buzzing with energy and expressing their creativity in their skating. They are in a space in which they can fully express who and what they are.

They have a sense of freedom to be.

‘You see a side of young people which you don’t always see, such as when they are in structured settings like at home or school where they have a series of expectations on them.’

At the skatepark by the sea, loaded against the cold with flasks of hot chocolate, Steve, the volunteer workers and the kids are in the

process of getting to know each other – by talking and listening.

‘I’m getting to understand what are the interests of the kids of Scarborough, what are their passions, challenges and worries,’ said Steve.

‘I’m in a privileged role. Many people are not able to have that relationship with young people. I feel like I’m being invited into somebody’s home and space where we are the outsiders.’

Throughout our talk, Steve kept stressing the great value of having belief in today’s young generation and encouraging them to develop their own voice about issues that really

matter to them.

‘We talk about anything and everything,’ he said. ‘We’ve talked about school, education in general, their friends – about a skating trip we’re planning in January, about smoking.

‘The conversation starts where the young people are and we explore why that has come up.’

Only a short time in Scarborough, Steve is already settling into his surroundings with wife Anna and two-year-old son Theo.

It represents quite a change of scenery from the heart of Birmingham where he worked as a families’ co-ordinator for a local Baptist church after studying there towards his degree in theology with youth and community work.

That job though was presenting Steve with its own frustrations, but it still needed a big leap of faith to move north to a place he had never visited before.

‘I had my perceptions of Scarborough as an old Victorian seaside town that had had its day,’ he said.

‘But my eyes have been opened. There is plenty going on here.’

Bearing in mind the turn of the year, my final question to Steve I thought would be entirely appropriate, but as it turned out it was not as appropriate as his answer.

‘What does 2017 hold for your work with young people in Scarborough?’ I asked.

Without hesitation, Steve replied: ‘Ask the young people.’

I thought that summed up him – and Sidewalk – just nicely.

“Can’t wait for all the ‘new year new me’ statuses lol *rolls eyes*” reads one Facebook status on my timeline. Loyal gym goers whinge about the ‘January Club’ and full time do-gooders reckon we should be on our best behaviour all year, why’s January so special?

WELL SORRY for thinking for one month of my life I might have a small bash at a little bit of self improvement - let me just crawl back into my lifetime of debauchery and dissatisfaction lol Debbie you’re so right - ‘new year new me’ is for losers, because at the end of the day: no-one likes a trier.

I’m not having this - I’m a trier (a part time trier) and the point is, sometimes we need a new beginning. We don’t all wake up every morning thinking that today’s a new day. And that’s totally alright - I like to treat my years how I treat my weeks, with good intentions and then a slow depreciation in effort.

If that makes me a lesser person than you then so be it.

I had a bash at some small resolutions last year - I wanted to save a thousand pounds, I wanted to lose a stone, and I wanted to find a hobby, imagine my surprise at the end of 2016 when I realised I’d kind of done all of them … give or take a pound or two each way.

There was method in my madness and I’m going to share it with you now.

The first and most important decision I made was setting specific goals. I didn’t airily choose ‘lose weight, save money’. Without a

However, if you’ve got at least some sort of income, you can stick to making the minimum amount on your card each month until you eventually pay it off.

clear goal I had nothing solid to aim for. So instead I set myself numerical goals such as save £1000 and lose 1 stone. These goals weren’t goals of the sake of it either. I thought about why I wanted to achieve them. I was nearing a size 16 in clothes and found I couldn’t wear the clothes I wanted to - So I would lose a stone to drop a dress size. I was also terrible with money and it was causing me serious stress. I needed to find a way to manage my money marginally better - saving is a great place to start.

I made a song and dance out of my goals too, I told everyone in the hope that I would be embarrassed to fail. In the office we all wrote our goals in Claire’s diary and had reviews quarterly. It worked a treat.

This year is going to be a little more ambitious, I’m going to quit smoking for good, I’d like to lose another stone and I’m going to start a blog with a friend.

I hope that if you’re reading this you will approach 2017 with the same vim and vigour that I will be.

January is a time for new beginnings and if we don’t have a bash every new year, when else are we going to do it? Go forth and set yourself some goals, smash the hell out of them , clap for your own damn self.

H, it’s blummin’ annoying when friends do this. I speak from experience when I say there’s nothing more frustrating than working your backside off to spend money on nice clothes, to then have friends galavanting around in them without your say so. Some friendships have a ‘what’s mine is yours policy’, others don’t and that’s completely acceptable. It’s bad mannered of your friend to just presume she can help yourself to your hard earned treats. Maybe she didn’t ask because she knew what the answer would be. All you clothes stealing friends out there pay attention: If in doubt: ask! Either way, there’s nothing wrong with you making a casual joke about how annoying it is that she does this to you. Become regimental in keeping your clothes on your person at all times if you’d rather avoid the fallout. If you’re feeling particularly ballsy tell her to keep her filthy clothes stealing paws to herself and to speak to me if she has a problem.

A coeliac mum has spoken out about how Slimming World helped her lose weight and be able to have a baby.

Sarah Colley’s weight ballooned when her body started to absorb food properly after learning to cut gluten out of her diet, she also quit her job and moved 90 miles away to be with her boyfriend.

When Sarah discovered Slimming World she was nervous: “I was apprehensive at first as I wasn’t sure what to expect.”

“All my fears soon disappeared as I was welcomed into a room full of smiling people. When food optimising was explained to me, I couldn’t believe how much naturally gluten free food I could eat.”

After taking what Sarah describes as ‘the scenic route’ to weight loss she was delighted to find she was pregnant after trying for nine months.

Sarah had a healthy pregnancy until she developed preeclampsia and had to have an emergency C section: “My son Joseph was delivered safely but I was still very ill. I first held him 14 hours after he was born. My blood pressure stabilised and we were kept in hospital for a week for monitoring before being allowed home.”

She added: “I am convinced and thankful to Slimming World that if I hadn’t been food optimising, my weight would have ballooned and I could have lost my son.”

She stayed on Slimming World throughout her pregnancy with support from her midwife and was the exact same weight the day her son, Joseph, was born as the day she found out she was pregnant.

Sarah firmly believes in Slimming World and has now trained to become a Slimming World consultant to help others in their weight loss journeys. She launches her own group on Tuesday the 3rd January at Westborough Methodist Church at 7pm and would welcome anyone to join who feels they would like to lose weight.

Heat the oven to 170C and line a 20cm x 20cm brownie tin with greaseproof paper.

Dinner Mash potato with low fat spread and low fat milk instead of butter Choose leaner cuts of meat – for example, swap streaky bacon for back bacon Swap the frying pan for the grill when cooking meat

In a pan, melt the butter and cook on a low heat for 5 mins until the white solids start to turn golden.

Pour into a cold bowl then add half of the chocolate and 3tbsp of the nut butter and stir till melted.

In a separate bowl whisk together the eggs and coconut sugar until they are thick and foamy. Sieve in the flour and add the chocolatey butter and fold in with a spatula until smooth.

Add the remaining chocolate and the raspberries and stir briefly.

Pour the mixture into the tin then drizzle the remaining Macadamia Nut Butter over the top and briefly swirl with a skewer or tip of a knife.

Bake for 20-25 mins. The goldies are done when they have a light golden crust but are still a little squidgy inside. Allow to cool in the tin before cutting into squares.

In a small bowl, combine the honey, lime juice, and cinnamon and whisk to blend. Set aside.

For those who are thinking they may have indulged a little too much over the festive period, may we present to you, Veganuary.

We’re used to months of the year being capitalised for self improvement and greater good nowadays, from Movember to Stoptober - the latest and most relevant, it seems, is Veganuary.

A representative of Veganuary said: “We’re expecting 50,000 participants this year and currently on track to meet this target as the sign up figures are running double to last year’s” Veganuary is actually based in York but is now a global effort. Last year, 23,000 people from 142 countries took part in Veganuary, including fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, writer and activist, Jack Monroe and Downton Abbey actor Peter Egan.

Motivations to go vegan for January include global warming, health and of course, animal welfare.

And the movement already has a a tonne of celebrity fans: Brad Pitt, Ellie Goulding and Gwyneth Paltrow are all vegan.

Rearing animals for diary and meat causes a lot of carbon dioxide (yoohoo: global warming), a heck of a lot more than plant based food too. Many people don’t know the ins and outs of animal welfare in the industry and simply don’t want to eat other animals.

Find a vegan friend. A real one or an online buddy is helpful to keep you on the vegan-wagon. Join our Veganuary Facebook group or check out the local vegan meetups listed in our starter kit. I found going vegan so much easier when I met Matthew. Before then I felt quite isolated, not knowing any other vegans in the village!

Keep motivated. Having a strong motivation makes it much easier. For some people, watching undercover footage of life on factory farms is a great reminder to ditch that chicken burger. For others it might be focusing on the health benefits, or reducing their carbon footprint.

SANTA may have come and gone but if he needs a rest next year there’s sure to be plenty of volunteers from around Scarborough to jump into his shoes.

Hundreds of jolly Santas, dressed in the traditional red suit with white beard, could well have been auditioning for the part as St Catherine’s Hospice held their fundraising dash around North Bay.

Words and pictures by Mike Tyas JUST over 12 months ago the first Santa to finish St Catherine’s latest annual fundraising dash hardly had enough energy to walk up the stairs.

Edward Clarkson had just completed four treatments of chemotherapy and had been in and out of hospital for seven months after being diagnosed with leukaemia.

But the 22-year-old battled back to health and fitness and was using the festive dash around the North Bay as part of his training regime to take part in the gruelling Ironman UK event next summer.

‘I’ve been in remission for just over a year – I have check-ups every three months,’ said Edward, who spent much of 2015 in the specialist Teenage Cancer Trust unit at St James’ University Hospital, Leeds after being told the bad news the previous May. He said: ‘I felt really tired, and was sick. I

Hospice fundraiser Nicky Grunwell said: ‘The dash went really well, everybody seemed to have a lovely time. The atmosphere was great – everybody really entered into the spirit.’

St Catherine’s were keen to make the dash the biggest yet and in that they succeeded with 550 Santas signing up.

Nicky added: ‘We’re absolutely thrilled with the number of people who supported the event.

‘Looking back at the start line, it made such a phenomenal sight to see such a sea of red. It was wonderful.’

Among those taking part was French bulldog puppy Dexter, who made quite a sight jogging

wasn’t sure if it was a tummy bug so I went to the doctors and had a few blood tests and they told me it was leukaemia – I was in shock, I had no idea.’

Edward, a keen swimmer and a water polo player for York, said he had always been ‘super fit’ and that had helped his cancer battle.

‘I truly believe that my fitness going into my illness helped me survive,’ he said.

‘The Teenage Cancer Trust were amazing for me so I decided I wanted to pay them back.

I didn’t want to run a marathon – too many people do them, so I opted to try an Ironman.

‘That’s the ultimate challenge and I want to show people I can do it.’

Edward, from Wilberfoss in York, took part in the 5K festive run with friends from Scarborough.

He said: ‘The Santa Dash was a lovely event to take part in; in such spectacular scenery next

Mum Leonne Reid, of Weaponness, said: ‘I’m quite sure Dexter could have done the 10K – it’s me that couldn’t.’

When interviewed, Dexter didn’t say a lot. He also didn’t look very happy!

By Heather Elvidge AS a new year stretches ahead, we wonder whether it’ll be better than the last. So it’s appropriate that the first month is named after the god with two faces.

Janus was a Roman god who guarded gates and doors, as well as the gates of heaven. At the opening of the year he looks back to the past year and forward to the year to come.

His month however, leaves us cold. We need something to cheer us up.

Our forebears had Twelfth Night, or at least they did until the dawn of the 20th century. On the evening of January 5, friends and relatives got together to mark the end of Christmas with cards, games and buffet-style snacks.

A large colourful cake dominated the table, while a generous bowl of Lambswool — hot, spiced ale or cider frothing with the pulp of roasted apples — encouraged goodwill.

Confectioners loved it. They filled their windows with fancy cakes, pastries, and their showstopper, the Twelfth Cake. This was a masterpiece of yellow, red and green icing, further embellished with flowers, flags, or figurines. But at the end of the 19th century Twelfth Night began to fade away, sunk by its reputation for gambling and indulgence.

Confectioners, unwilling to give up their grand cake, clothed it in demure white icing and presented it as Christmas cake.

In rural areas Twelfth Night customs continued into the new century. This was the night when folk went out — some still do — equipped with a bucket of Lambswool to wassail their apple trees, bees, and cattle. The night ended with another custom; when the revellers rolled home they found the doors locked. Inside, the woman of the house was roasting something over the fire, and before they were let in they had to guess what it was.

A wrong answer meant more time in the cold, sobering up.

The following day, January 6, was the traditional time to take down decorations.

This had to be thorough, because every overlooked holly leaf could tempt a goblin into the house.

On Humberside, the communities of Haxey and Westwoodside celebrate the 6th in a unique way, by shoving each other around a ploughed field. The Haxey Hood Game is a kind of mass scrum, with a length of thick rope bound in leather. Each side aims to get the Hood to their own pub, although hours can pass before it gets near enough for a landlord to touch it. It must be fun because they’ve been doing it for at least 200 years.

January 25 offers diversions of a different kind as Scots celebrate the poetry of Robert Burns and the Welsh get romantic on the feast day of St Dwynwen, their version of St Valentine.

But to really prolong the festivities you’ve got to go north. In Shetland, where the light returns more slowly, the descendents of Vikings stretch Yule to the end of January.

On the last Tuesday in the month Lerwick stages Up Helly Aa, which means the end of the holidays. 40 men in Viking gear haul a specially built, 30-foot replica longship through the town. Streetlights are turned off and a huge crowd, many of them carrying blazing torches, accompanies the dragonship to its final destination. There they throw their torches onto the ship, turning a year’s work into a blazing pyre.

Perhaps we shouldn’t be so hard on January.

It’s not always gloomy — a good frost can magic a wonderland from the dullest outlook.

January can have fine days too, when starlings wheeze, sparrows twitter and blackbirds try out a few soft notes. Wrens startle with their loud, rapid trill. Robins are in fine voice now, rising early to sing sweetly in the half-light.

And in the damp ground life is stirring: the green tips of early bulbs are showing above the soil. Winter may not be over yet, but nature is preparing for spring.

Tales from the cooler water

NOW Christmas is over and new year has passed, we are all a bit tired and thinking of the year ahead. You may have wavered over all sorts of unrealistic new year resolutions and maybe settled on something realistic like promising yourself you won't inadvertently start world war 3 or...

Resolutions, especially significant ones, can seem daunting, but I can make it easier for you. If you care about what happens in the world around you, it can sometimes seem impossible to make much of an impact with your choices. Beach cleans are great, but only affect a small geographical area. Now to the complicated bit (I know it's January and thinking can be hard for a week or two so feel free to shut the paper, have a cup of tea then continue) – what we do is use a concept called micro and macro. 'Micro' refers to our own life where as 'macro' is everything external to us – the bit that seems too big to change. So we need to think of ways we can make changes to the big stuff in smaller steps. One of the ways in which we interact with the world is through our choice of where we shop and what we buy. A bit of research can indentify which

companies would have been on Santa's nice and which were on his naughty list – the companies which use excessive or unrecyclable packaging and which damage the environment. As consumers we have a great deal of power and if enough people put pressure on a company or boycott their products, they can be encouraged to make changes. It's as simple as that. It's our job as consumers to inform companies when they do something with which we disagree.

If you need proof that it works, here is a great example. Cotton buds with plastic stems have long been a pollution problem, turning up on beaches years after being flushed down toilets. A combination of consumer pressure and communication with organisations such as SAS has pushed Tesco and Sainsburys to alter the way in which their own label cotton buds are produced. From 2017 onwards they will have paper rather than plastic stems, meaning they will biodegrade harmlessly.

However, please remember that they still must not be flushed down the toilet. It's one small step to a cleaner world and every time these things happen we are that little bit closer to where we need to be.

Muck & Magic THE Muck and Magic gardening team are mourning the loss of one of their own. Ron Womack has passed away whilst in the tender care of the Angels at St Catherine's Hospice.

Many of you will know Ron from his days running Womack’s Nursery and Garden Centre on Filey Road for many years. Many of you will have listened to him when the Going To Pot team have been out presenting gardeners question and answer shows and he had a regular readership following his press articles which appeared for many years in local newspapers.

To us, he was simply "Our Ron", a man of great intellect and a wide range of interests encompassing horticulture, (of course!), photography, science and technology, meteorology and, rather surprisingly, sport!

He wouldn't mind me saying that he wasn't really built for running but he was an avid armchair enthusiast embracing athletics, cycling, motor racing and tennis amongst others. We often joked that the Olympic Games, Wimbledon and Grand Prix weren't really taking place in Rio or London or wherever, but judging by Ron’s interest, and absence from the garden, they were actually taking place somewhere on Filey Road and he would only emerge from his self-imposed purdah when the last drop of action had finished.

Ron was proud to have learned his trade from his father and he loved to tell a good story about being sent out to work with his dad at the age of five, to be out from under his mother’s feet! So a lifetime in gardening learning his skills at the University of Life, and happily for us all, willing to share that knowledge not only with fellow colleagues but, most importantly, with new gardeners just starting out. He was enthusiastic and encouraging to everyone he met. And there in lies a problem! It was impossible to go anywhere with Ron without stopping many times to talk to former customers, friends and aquaintances. He loved meeting and chatting with old friends.

Ron had many passions in his life, not least his family of whom he was very proud. He always enjoyed sitting down to Sunday dinner with them accompanied by a bottle of red and some good conversation. He was equally at home at the weekly gardening team "tea club" which gave us all a chance to catch up and eat at the same time. It didn't really matter what was on the menu as long as there was plenty of it! And even better if there was pudding to follow... with lashings of custard.

In later years the Muck and Magic greenhouse became our Ron’s greenhouse and he presided over the propagators like an old fashioned head gardener. We will remember him whe has was happiest, amongst his plants, welcoming friends and visitors to view the latest batch of seedlings and cuttings, or simply to talk gardening for a few minutes. Ron was our head gardener and will also always be Scarborough’s head gardener. This is a tribute to a kind and loyal friend – a true man of the soil who we will miss tremendously but will remember with great affection.

Ron, we salute you!

Double joy as hotels rated best in Yorkshire Words and pictures by Mike Tyas TWO hotels in Scarborough have been named as the best in Yorkshire based on ratings compiled by a leading travel website.

and three-star hotel categories respectively.

Owned by partners Dee Hawken and Glyn Lewis, St Michael’s was also named Yorkshire’s number one B&B for best value accommodation and best service.

Both establishments only just missed out on landing the top Trivago rating in their category across the UK, finishing second.

‘We’re very grateful for the award – in fact we’re gobsmacked,’ said Dee, who bought the six-bedroomed property last year after moving with Glyn from Cambridgeshire.

A former groom to leading horseracing trainers John Gosden and Clive Brittain at Newmarket, Glyn added: ‘When somebody says you’re the best in Yorkshire and second best in UK it knocks you back a bit.

‘It’s very humbling that people have come here and genuinely enjoyed it, had a good time and think we are providing a good service.’

Husband and wife Alan and Jude Roberts bought the Leeway after moving from St Helen’s in Merseyside where Alan worked as a project manager for a construction company.

They had an inauspicious start; the hotel only had ten bookings for the following year when they moved in during November 2011.

The couple soon transformed the Leeway’s fortunes though, completely renovating its nine rooms across three floors and for months on end each year now regularly raise their no vacancies signs, with guests rebooking three or four times a year.

‘We’re thrilled to bits with the award,’ said Alan. ‘It’s a massive pat on the back and makes it all worthwhile. It makes you think we’re doing something right.’

Judith added: ‘We took steps into this industry not really knowing what the future held for us.

‘We take enormous pride in the way we present our accommodation and that we source all our breakfast ingredients locally.

‘To win this award is amazing.’

When asked by The Review why guests rated them highly, both couples had similar answers.

‘We just try to be ourselves; we treat everybody the same and with the upmost respect. We treat people the way we like to be treated,’ said Alan.

Over at St Michael’s, Glyn echoed those sentiments. ‘It’s common sense really. We place great importance on cleanliness, friendliness, providing good local food and having a happy atmosphere.

‘We try to be as accommodating as we can be for each and every one of our guests, and not be regimental. We’ve guests who are contractors and start work at 7am, so we provide them with a breakfast at a time that is suitable for them.’

Glyn and Dee said they would like to acknowledge the support they have received since taking over, from Gary Felvus, who owns The Dolphin next door.

German company Trivago say their ‘ratings index’ is based on scores from guests, taken from a number of leading travel websites.

Harrogate’s exclusive Rudding Park was named as the best four-star hotel. The Grand Hotel and Spa on Station Rise, York was best five-star hotel.

Retreat centre details Charity offers free new year programme IT training sessions Words and picture by Mike Tyas WYDALE Hall has outlined its programme of activities for 2017 in a new brochure.

The 32-page publication details events at the York Diocese-run Christian retreat centre outside Brompton which are a mixture of day courses and residential events that require overnight or longer stays.

General Manager Mark Rance said about 600 people attended 34 events during 2016 and their feedback shaped the new programme.

‘We listened to what was said about what people would like in 2017 and we were to a large degree driven by their opinions,’ he said, citing the introduction of a course on social media training as an example.

‘A lot of people in the church are a bit nervous about modern methods of communicating.

This course will help address their fears,’ he added.

The 2017 programme offers bible study, lifestyle courses, retreat days, training for different stages of life such as retirement, spiritual growth as well as social events.

‘We think it is a balanced programme,’ said Mark. ‘We had a very successful 2016. The numbers that attended our events were what we were expecting.

‘The majority of people that come here do so from a 20-mile radius of Scarborough. We get a lot of support from the Scarborough Deanery who publicise our events in their churches.’

While aimed at helping those ordained or lay in their Christian ministry, Wydale are keen to encourage anyone to visit them.

Mark said: ‘Come and join us for a cup of tea, visit our gardens and see what Wydale is like, and see if there is something in our programme for you.’

In addition to the events organised by Wydale itself, the building hosts numerous events organised by churches and other organisations, attracting hundreds of people.

Words and picture by Mike Tyas FREE training sessions are being offered for people looking to brush up on their IT skills.

Yorkshire Coast Sight Support are offering learning at their Dean Road office for anybody regardless of whether they have a sight problem or not.

Learners will initially be offered up to three sessions with the charity’s IT tutor but that can be extended dependent on individual need.

‘Anybody who has a problem with IT, whether it’s using Word, email, using social media, or whatever it may be can book for training,’ said volunteer and activities coordinator, Sam Slinger-Beevers.

The sessions can be booked either on an individual or group basis.

Sam said the sessions may appeal to those who have received some form of technology as a Christmas present but are unsure how to get the best from it.

On Wednesday January 11th, 10-4pm, the charity will hold an open day where the public can look around its specialist IT suite and book a training session. While I don’t think there are any serious financial dangers, you are likely to be pushing the boat out on a number of occasions and therefore, by midsummer, you might find you have to curtail your spending a little bit.

During the late summer and early autumn you will come in for some criticism from people who might mean well, but who nevertheless, do not stand in your shoes, do not know where you have come from, and despite what they think, do not really know how you feel. They will suggest that you are being childish and impulsive and selfish – and so you are, and thank God for that! It is not before time!

Travel aspects tie in with islands and a journey back to a place which has had a formative role to play in your history.

Exercise improves your health, and just think on, there are some very pleasurable ways of getting a bit of exercise!

ARIES 21ST MAR - 20TH APR A very positive beginning to the New Year with some fresh energy and renewed confidence pushing you forwards.

There is a mental attitude which says “come on, let’s get on with it and stop wasting time!” – and it has to be said that this mood is quite infectious and you’ll have the satisfaction of seeing other people follow where you lead.

Throughout the year family ties seem to get stronger and if there have been a few areas of conflict, while these might not be totally resolved, there is a healing and a softening energy which creates deeper qualities of mutual cooperation and understanding.

The biggest challenge on the career/job scene is to keep slogging on at the old routines, but having said that, the early Spring augers well for promotions, changes of work routines, and a little bit on extra cash find its way into your kitty. Some travel energies coalesce in May and again in September, but to keep this in perspective, we might just be talking here about summer holidays.

There are no great eruptions in affairs of the heart, but this should be a calm year wherein relationships bring much support and comfort.

A brisk start to the year with some unexpected financial gains making things a bit easier during the first quarter.

Some members of the sign will enjoy some progress on the job scene, while others will get stuck into some new projects. The big thing for working Taureans is the degree of job satisfaction they will be enjoying, which can be more valuable than a few extra pounds in the pocket.

GEMINI 22ND MAY - 21ST JUN A leisurely and laid back start to the year, maybe with the pace picking up during the early days of February when, with little warning, everything seems to be happening at once and you need to be in two different places at the same time. Gemini parents have a few minor crises to sort out with young teen children, and will have to find the right balance between being a parent and a best friend.

March and April will be particularly busy months with new jobs beginning, or if nothing else, some new work routines crowding into your schedule. Anything to do with education is very high profile, and this is applicable not only to you, but also to other people around you. There could well be a degree of emotional tension in relationships coming to the surface in the April and early May period, but with some patience and honesty, this should be sorted out by late June or July.

Travel patterns in July could be nothing more than a holiday, but I wouldn’t be surprised if you found yourself travelling back to a place which had had a very significant role to play in your past.

Without there being huge increases in your earnings potential, it nevertheless looks as though there is quite a lot of money moving backwards and forwards through your hands, therefore anything to do with banking, bank loans, mortgages, and insurance, seems to have some special significance in the year ahead.

CANCER 22ND JUN- 22ND JUL Potentially, 2017 should open up for you with some very strong romantic and emotional energies coalescing around you, and it seems that someone will be going a long way to try and please you in affairs of the heart… However, I do say “potentially” because your response to these overtures will be the deciding factor in how things work out. January could be the beginning of a really lovely year for you, but not if you demand the stars when only the moon is on offer.

It should be a rewarding year where jobs and careers are concerned, with some great opportunities presenting themselves in March and April, and then again in October: if it is not already alive and well within you, there will be the birth of ambition and determination to achieve targets and goals.

Parents of children might have some problems to sort out during the summer months, especially in connection with kids hitting puberty. This is one area where you must work hard to show who is boss! Also in connection with family

affairs, there is likely to be some growing concern with regard to welfare of an older lady.

LEO 23RD JUL - 23RD AUG While you start the year by getting on with your usual routines, beneath the surface there is a bit of a reality check going on as you examine your long term goals, targets and expectations. It gradually dawns on you that for you to get what you want, you’re going to have to do things a bit differently.

April looks like being a key month in connection with relationships. It is also a time when single people may connect with one very special person, and in this eventuality, may I suggest that you go slowly, being mindful of someone else’s needs and expectations.

The summer should be extremely busy where jobs and careers are concerned, and there are some very favourable opportunities for people who are self-employed. In July and August there might be something more meaningful than a routine summer holiday.

While you are unlikely to be awash with money, there is a new financial self confidence making its presence felt, and this may well be the year to splash out on something really rather expensive, be it a new car or a four week cruise around the Caribbean.

VIRGO 24TH AUG - 22ND SEP A confusing year for certain members of the sign who will be embarking on journeys of education and self discovery, making stronger contact with the spiritual side of their lives.

All things which have a connection with the paranormal and spiritual development become increasingly relevant – but this is a quiet inner energy which you are going to keep very much to yourself.

There are some interesting changes on the job scene at various times throughout the year – new jobs for those who are actively looking for something but also changes of job routine… . This energy stretches lazily across the whole of the summer period, and it has to be said that a very high percentage of Virgo born people will be concerned with financial savings and reserves during the mid and late summer.

In connection with relationships, 2017 should bring a modicum of pleasure and security, but there are likely to be hiccups for younger people between April and June, when there is some inevitable degree of change and adjustment in all affairs of the heart. New love affairs beckon, but before they can flourish, an old ghost needs to be laid.

LIBRA 23RD SEP - 23RD OCT A year of redressing imbalances, putting old wrongs to right, and for finding a little more time to follow your own interests. Career minded Librans who can find the gumption to follow their own hunches and instincts rather that following the party line of orthodoxy, should do particularly well.

Romance and relationships fall into two distinct categories.

If you’re in a relationship with someone, there should be a steady quality of calm and predictability, and while this might sound just a little boring, at least you are safe… On the other hand, if you’re not in a steady relationship, the name of the game is freedom and independence, and while your social life might be sizzling, I doubt that any new lasting commitments will be made. You need to exercise some caution in the early summer when more than one suitor might misunderstand where you’re coming from.

If you feel the need to put on the financial brakes in the autumn it will only be because you have seriously overspent during the summer, therefore to maintain a steady mood of fiscal confidence you must make a point of living within your means – and while this advice is applicable to everyone, it is especially applicable to young females between the ages of 18 and 25.

SCORPIO 24TH OCT- 222ND NOV A very bright and active start to the year! You’ll be infused with a sense of excitement and adventure, self-confidence is high, social outlook should be swinging and your love life is filled with a lot more highs than lows… Gradually, however, there is a feeling of anti-climax as everything seems to slow down and you slip into old, familiar routines.

Some of you will sigh philosophically and think “well, it was good while it lasted” while others take a more reactionary view and say “no, I’m not going to settle for this, and if I’ve lost my way, I’ll go and find a new one!”

Those of you who fall into the first camp should be able to enjoy a reasonably calm and tranquil summer period, but for those who are determined to create change at any cost, you will find that there are highs and lows. But nevertheless, by the early autumn, certain things will be settled, decisions will have been made, you’ll have a better idea of where you’re going both in the mid and long term.

Seaside holidays to suit your pocket are relevant in July and August - (well, they would be, wouldn’t they!) – a few might get to the Seychelles, but as long as you are with the right people, Scarborough could be just as fun.

Financially you’ll be able to keep your head above water, and in this day and age, you must be doing something right!

SAGITTARIUS 23RD NOV - 21ST DEC Possibly a low key and moody start to the year as you grapple with one or two personal dilemmas, which really are personal because they concern inner emotions and issues that nobody else is even half aware of. I know it might sound a bit corny, but questions like “who am I? why am I here? ricochet around the brain in search of answers. But in doing this, you risk losing sight of all the bright positive things you do have around you, so maybe the questions are really not worth the answers! You’d be a lot happier if you were able to say “Well, I don’t know the answer to this, that or the other – and actually, I don’t care! There are more important things to worry about!” Having said that, if you can take the pressure off yourself, you may well find that 2017 does bring a degree of personal knowledge and self discovery.

2017 should be a stable year with money, and the oddity here is that you might not be earning any more money than usual, but that your personal expenses and spending might decrease by a few quid.

The majority of established relationships will rumble on steadily. Younger singletons may find that it’s quite a fun year in affairs of the heart.

Parents should be well pleased by the achievements of their children, but some of you, fathers in particular, may well be reminded of the old adage which says “youth is wasted on the young!”

CAPRICORN 22ND DEC - 20TH JAN You’ll walk into 2017 ill-prepared to face the New Year; there is not a lot of incentive with you to prove anything to anyone, and frankly, you could probably do with a damn good holiday. Work commitments make that impossible and the idea of doing as little as possible has a number of attractions.

This state of mind passes, but only gradually, and it probably isn’t until early spring that we see you gaining some equilibrium and balancing yourself out on a more even keel. Having said that, your physical energies are finite, so you must learn no to put pressure on yourself by pushing yourself that extra yard too far.

2017 should be a warm and tender year where all emotional partnerships are concerned. If, however, we talk about family relationships, then on more than one occasion there is a degree of tension and conflict coming to the surface, and the best way (probably the only way) to handle this is keep your head down, stay well out of it, and let other people sort it out.

It’s an up and down money year and I doubt that there’ll be much room for luxuries. Changes of job or job routines might be relevant at any time during the mid-summer, and journeys in both the spring and autumn look like being happy times.

Volunteer makes library SOS plea Words and pictures by Mike Tyas

A VOLUNTEER who rallied to the cause to save his local library has urged others to follow his example ‘before it’s too late.’

A year ago, retired Methodist minister Revd.

Bruce Russell answered the call for more volunteers to help at Eastfield Library after its future was thrown into doubt because of impending cuts.

Now, with the on-going shake-up in North Yorkshire County Council Library services about to come to a head early in the spring, Revd. Russell has urged the community to get behind its library.

He said: ‘Three years ago I retired and so I had a bit of time on my hands. During my years as a minister, as you might imagine, I read quite a lot of books – books to me are extremely important.

‘The library, particularly in this location, is a vital resource for the community and it would be a disaster if it was to close.

‘It’s a big resource. It’s not just a place where somebody can collect books, read them, and bring them back again.

‘There are so many other things I’ve discovered going on which I had some idea of before, but since working here I’ve seen so much more, such as the extensive use by

‘I’ve seen several story-telling groups with very young children – I’ve seen primary school parties visiting the library to get introduced to books and I’ve seen older people coming in to use it as an open resource.

‘They can meet with friends and get cups of

coffee, and spend time with each other. There are all sorts of social functions going on.’

Revd. Russell volunteers each Monday where one of his main tasks is to select books to be delivered to those who can’t make it in to the library.

He said: ‘There are three of us. We pick the books people at home like – whether they are ordinary books, audio books or CDs/DVDs. Other volunteers deliver them to their homes and a fortnight later they go and pick them up and deliver more.’

Revd. Russell added: ‘It would only be when it closes that people will realise what a staggering loss it is for the community.

‘There are people working out business plans to keep this place open which is great but the greatest need is for people working on the coal face.

‘People might think they don’t have skills the library could use but of course they have.’

North Yorkshire County Council launched a campaign in December to recruit volunteers to its libraries.

County Councillor Chris Metcalfe, Executive Member for Library and Information Services, said. ‘The campaign is an important reminder of the need for more volunteers in all our libraries.

‘Regardless of your age, background or experience, everyone has something to contribute and a great deal to gain from volunteering.’

Meanwhile, Revd. Russell said Eastfield Library’s closure would have many wider social implications, citing the example of the home delivery service.

He added: ‘People who live alone at least know that someone will go to see them once a fortnight – so it’s another social contact for them. Any contact is enormously important: isolation is such a great problem.

‘It’s not only those at home but also people who come in to the library regularly to meet with friends. It’s a community centre as well as a library – it serves so many purposes.

‘Once you lose a resource, you’ll never get it back again.

‘I would urge people to come forward and give a little of their time to help this place survive.’

New Rural Dean for local churches Words by Mike Tyas, pictures by Mike Tyas and James Giddings A NEW Rural Dean has been appointed for all the Church of England parishes in the Scarborough Deanery.

The Revd. Mike Leigh, the vicar of St Mark’s Church, Newby and St Mary’s, Cloughton, succeeds the Revd. David Pynn after his five years in office came to an end in November.

Revd. Leigh, 47, will oversee a deanery of 22 parishes from Ravenscar and Staintondale in the north to Filey and Hunmanby in the south.

He said: ‘It’s a real privilege to be asked to be the new Rural Dean and follow in the footsteps of David Pynn who has done such a wonderful job during these last five years.’

The Rural Dean provides a link between local clergy, the Archdeacon of the East Riding, The Venerable Andy Broom, and the Bishop of Hull, the Rt. Revd. Alison White.

Revd. Leigh’s role will include encouraging and supporting clergy, leading the vision for the deanery – alongside Ros Brewer, the Lay Chair, through the local Synod - and working closely in parishes that currently have a vacancy for a vicar.

Revd. Leigh said: ‘Scarborough is such a vibrant place where local churches have always worked extremely well together and I hope and pray that this is something I can encourage and develop.

‘Our immediate priority in the deanery is to see our churches up to strength in term of clergy appointments but I also hope that in the near future we can find new and creative ways to share the never changing message of hope that is found in Jesus Christ.’

Revd. Leigh, a former professional opera singer with Opera North, who is known locally as the Singing Vicar, has been in

charge at St Mark’s since 2006 and vicar at St Mary’s, Cloughton since 2013.

He trained for the ministry at the College of the Resurrection, Mirfield in West Yorkshire

and served as a curate for four years at St Michael’s in north Hull. He is married to Alison and the couple have two teenage daughters.

Hundreds attend town hall fair Words and photos by Dave Barry ABOUT 400 people enjoyed a Christmas fair at Scarborough town hall.

It raised £1,200 for the Mayoress’s Community Fund, which supports local worthy causes.

Organised by mayoress Val Green and her committee, it had a strong emphasis on arts and crafts and festive food and drink.

The Salvation Army Band played in the townhall gardens and school choirs sang Christmas carols in the public gallery.

Schools and groups from around the borough were invited to take part.

Children hung wishes on a ‘wishing tree’ in the town-hall gardens and decorations on a Christmas tree in the foyer.

The fair featured performers from local pantomimes, Father Christmas, the town crier and guided tours of parts of the building.

Stalls sold Christmas arts and crafts, gifts and Christmas decorations.

No charge was made for admission but a £5 charge was levied for festive nibbles and wine or non-alcoholic punch.

Copper Horse food consistently excellent Words and photos by Dave Barry THE Copper Horse in Seamer has been one of our favourite eating places for several years.

The food is consistently excellent, with a hard-working kitchen team beavering away behind the scenes.

Upfront, an equally polished and professional team meets, greets and serves the endless stream of customers who regularly fill its reservations book to the ginnels.

Proof, were any needed, of the Copper Horse’s prowess on the eating-out stage came a few hours before our last visit, when Les Routiers announced it as its restaurant of the year, for the second time (the first was in 2008).

The competition was typically stiff. The other nominees were Chez Vous in Warlingham, Surrey; Don Giovanni in Manchester; and Colmans in South Shields.

The last time we went, just before Christmas, my taste-buds were well and truly tingled by the equally delicious home-smoked salmon fishcake and halibut on a creamy bed of wild mushrooms, kale and leek. The halibut was baked in a Bertha oven, which cooks at up to 500 degrees over charcoal, imparting a smokey flavour while keeping it moist and juicy.

As a vegan, my wife Christine has enjoyed some impressive meat- and dairy-free meals at the Copper Horse over the years. It’s a good test of a restaurant if its chefs can accommodate unusual diets alongside the regular omnivorous fare.

On our last visit, the menu contained four vegetarian main courses, two of which looked as if they could be veganised. We were served by the lovely Helen, who checked everything

with the chef and confirmed they were.

Christine opted for the roast sweet potato and carrot soup with cumin croutons. It was smooth, with lovely flavours and thick and hot, just how she likes it. Her main course was a stew of root vegetables, red onion and chickpeas with a walnut crumble and a big tureen of salt-baked new potatoes, which got the thumbs-up too.

Drinks-wise, we started with beer from the Great Yorkshire Brewery at Cropton at the bar and continued with an impertinent Chilean sauvignon blanc (me) and a bottle of water (Christine) at the table.

By the time Helen’s colleague Catherine presented us with the dessert menu, we were running out of room. We began to vaguely regret indulging in the home-baked mini-loaf which usually materialises on every guest’s table before the order is taken. It’s rather more-ish and filling. I had mine with garlic butter. Helen brought Christine little bowls of olive oil and balsamic vinegar to dip hers into.

We reconciled that we were too full for dessert and both finished with refeshing and revitalising peppermint tea, served in lovely crockery.

One of my favourite Copper Horse games is identifying the light-entertainment has-beens whose portraits adorn the walls and trying to remember which ones are still alive. The only one we could spot who was still alive was Bruce Forsyth.

We had to confer with the diners on an adjacent table to work out that Christine was being overlooked by Tessie O'Shea (not Dick Emery) and Danny la Rue. I was watched by Mike Yarwood and Peters & Lee.

Art course starts soon

by Dave Barry AN art course on drawing and painting starts at Woodend in Scarborough on 16 January.

It will be led by local artist Ruth Collett and run by the Workers Educational Association.

“We will look at the art of the Impressionists for inspiration, and lots of vibrant colour to beat the winter blues”, Ruth says.

The course will cover drawing in pencil, pastel and charcoal and painting in acrylics, in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

It will use games and simple exercises to get students started.

Northern chanteuse coming up at Woodend

NORTHERN chanteuse Lauren Housley and her band will perform at Woodend in Scarborough on 13 January, at 7.30pm.

Lauren’s star has been rising rapidly over the last year, during which she has been identified as an up-and-coming act by Radio 2 and Live Nation.

Her blend of Nashville-flavoured soul is enhanced by her warm, intense and engaging stage presence.

Her album, The Beauty of This Life, is “an allkiller, no-filler affair with a beautiful fusing of blues, country, Americana and Motown, reflecting her musical heroes, Janis Joplin,

Yorkshire’s connections with Antarctica

by Dave Barry A NEW exhibition at Scarborough Maritime Heritage Centre reveals three interesting links between Yorkshire and the Antarctic.

Firstly, 2017 marks the centenary of the return to Britain of Ernest Shackleton after his traumatic escape from disaster in Antarctica.

Six men aboard the expedition ship Endurance fished, worked or lived in Yorkshire and survived the sub-zero temperatures and months of hardship in the Antarctic.

The exhibition will feature a gansey made by the wife of Robert Scott, who accompanied Shackleton on an earlier expedition.

The second link is that the centre’s president, Martin Johnson, travelled to South Georgia

and Elephant Island in 2012 and retraced Shackleton’s steps. Martin’s photos reveal the stunning landscape and bring to life its beauty and harshness.

Finally, a rather unexpected Yorkshire connection is that a boat built in Beverley in 1906 lies abandoned in South Georgia.

The Viola-Dias, a typical steam trawler used on the Yorkshire coast, was requisitioned by the Admiralty as a minesweeper in the first world war. It ended up in Antarctic waters on sealing trips and has been rusting away since the 1960s. A group from Hull is hoping to bring it back home and restore it for Hull’s City of Culture year in 2017.

The exhibition starts on 3 January. The centre is open from 11am to 4pm, Wednesday to Sunday. No charge is made for admission.

The centre is run entirely by volunteers who won the Queen’s award for volunteering in 2016.

Words and photos by Dave Barry OVER 100 people enjoyed Scarborough Choral Society’s Christmas concert at Westborough Methodist Church.

The choir performed Bob Chilcott’s everpopular On Christmas Night, the famous Sheffield Village Carols and seasonal favourites.

Chilcott is well known for his carols. On Christmas Night consists of eight original carols with settings ranging from folksy and jubilant to swinging and contemplative.

By contrast, the Sheffield Village Carols are lively songs which are sung in pubs in the Sheffield area.

The choir was conducted by Evelyn Halford, with Frank James on organ and piano.

The choir’s next performances include a come-and-sing performance of Stainer’s

Staged at Queen Street Central Hall, the two performances involved the centre’s juniorstrings group, BIG, the junior-guitars group, the senior-guitars group, the Junior and Easy Concert Bands, Scarborough Area Youth Symphony Orchestra, Ebony, Jazz Train and Easy Jazz.

Music centre manager Ralph Alder described the concerts as “amazing” and said he was “very proud” of all the young performers.

A SCARBOROUGH philatelist has published a book about the street he grew up in, in Tunbridge Wells, Kent.

Newlands Road to Success documents the activities of Chris Phillips and his childhood friends.

These included annual street Olympics, fairs, firework displays and, in 1953, a coronation party and the founding of a stamp club.

Over half the book is devoted to the club, which inspired Chris’s lifelong interest in stamps.

Chris, 77, attended 300 club meetings and heard talks by visiting philatelists and a speaker from a stamp-printing firm.

The club ran a first-day cover service and had regular stands at the annual four-day Tunbridge Wells hobbies exhibition.

A campaign to have small pictorial stamps led to questions in the House of Commons and a mention in the Post Office’s postal museum records.

The club had regular reports in local papers, the philatelic press, the children’s newspaper Boys Own, the Observer and an Italian stamp paper, and was once mentioned on the BBC regional news.

Chris gives talks about the book to stampcollecting clubs and other groups. He has spoken at the Bridlington and Scarborough philatelic societies and in 2017 will give a talk to Tunbridge Wells Philatelic Society and Filey Probus.

Chris is keen to get children interested in

stamp collecting.

He says that although the book is full of nostalgia, he hopes “to encourage today’s youth to be enterprising and take things into their own control, and as a result become useful and happy adults.

“Children can do things for themselves, and by doing so will usually gain confidence to be happy and resourceful in later life”.

Newlands Road to Success is his second book. The first, Around the World in 128 Days Minus 1, was about a fourmonth journey to meet internet friends in eight countries in Chris’s book, Newlands Road to Success 2006/7.

Coastival launches with an unexpected flourish Words and photos by Dave Barry THERE was a touch of magic and Minecraft in the air at the launch of Coastival 2017.

A key feature of the arts festival will be an attempt to recreate Scarborough in 3D using the Minecraft computer game.

The Coastival programme was launched against the backdrop of some of the latest images from the Minecraft Scarborough creation process.

The launch, at the Spa, featured entertainment from DJ Victor Swanvesta, Pete and his Suitcase Circus and magician Andy Russell.

Coastival director Wendy Holroyd said: “The launch event was a great success and we had a lot of fun down at Farrer’s bar in the Spa. People got a sneak preview of some of the new images taken of the work to create Scarborough in Minecraft and we were brilliantly entertained by Victor, Pete and Andy. The new programme was very well received and we look forward to a fabulous festival in February”.

The festival theme is the unexpected.

Artwork, music and performances will appear in unusual locations as Coastival looks to break with people’s expectations of an arts festival.

Dean Road and the railway station will sit alongside traditional locations like the Spa and the Stephen Joseph Theatre.

Krash Labs, a computer club for children aged 6-16, is building Scarborough in Minecraft, which enables the 3D recreation of buildings and places.

Schools, colleges, community groups and individuals are painstakingly regenerating various parts of the town.

The team is appealing for Minecraft builders, creators, architects and engineers to build their home, school or favourite place in Scarborough – digitally. The project is open to everyone.

When the digi-builders have submitted their work, clever software geeks will stitch it all together to make it whole.

National award for theatre director Words by Dave Barry, photo by Jackie Daly THE co-founder and artistic director of a Scarborough theatre company has won a national award.

Alison Watt of Beach Theatre award Hut has won a Writers' Guild Olwen winner Alison Watt Wymark theatre encouragement award.

She was nominated by Beach Hut colleague Jackie Daly for mentoring and supporting her over the last three years.

The guild presented its annual awards for the encouragement of new writing at the Royal Court Theatre in London.

The brainchild of playwright Mark Ravenhill, the awards were set up to give guild members an opportunity to publicly thank people who had given them a positive experience in new writing over the previous year.

Jackie, who won the Windsor Fringe Kenneth Branagh award for new drama writing this year, said: “During 2016, Ali has commissioned, supported and directed full productions of 14 community writers’ work. She tutored the Write Stuff course at the Stephen Joseph Theatre for seven years and led the creation of Springboard Scriptwriters, a Yorkshire collective of writers who produce and direct their own rehearsed readings. She runs a small advanced scriptwriters’ group I’m honoured to be part of.

“As a script editor, Ali’s instinct for story is extraordinary, her feedback sensitive and direct. Ali has been my mentor since 2013.

With her support I’ve grown from a fumbling

storyteller into an emerging writer with momentum and self-belief.”

Beach Hut Theatre is committed to encouraging and supporting emerging writers, actors, musicians and theatre technicians, while providing professional development opportunities for those wanting to keep their skills up to date.

The company offers opportunities to local communities to get involved in theatre while bringing new and exciting productions to the town.

Alison said: “I am thrilled that such a talented playwright as Jackie Daly has nominated me for this award. I’m delighted, also, that there has been some recognition of the new writing work done at grass roots level here in Scarborough.

“This award isn’t just about me,” she said. “It is about the Writers’ Guild acknowledging how important supporting the individual writer is, no matter how far advanced they are in their career.

“I’d like to overturn an often prevailing untruth that, in terms of the arts, local somehow implies substandard. I have the privilege of working with some excellent writers here in the Scarborough area, and actors and designers, too.

“It’s what makes working for Beach Hut an exciting ride.”

Beach Hut’s most recent productions were a Halloween season consisting of Summer’s Edge, a new musical comedy written by Alison and John Pattison, performed at Westwood, and Autumn Bites, six new short plays by emerging writers and composers performed at the library.

Plans for new projects are already under way for 2017, including script-writing classes and new productions.

Film society shows US animation Anomalisa

by Dave Barry A MAN crippled by the mundanity of his life experiences something out of the ordinary in Scarborough Film Society’s next offering.

Anomalisa is an animated American comedydrama directed and produced by Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson.

The Guardian summarised it as “a masterpiece about the human condition – with puppets”.

It will be screened at the library on 6 January.

In the society’s next film, Margherita, a harried film director tries to juggle the demands of her latest movie and a personal life in crisis.

The star of her film, a charming but hammy American actor imported for the production,

initially presents nothing but headaches and her crew is close to mutiny.

Directed by acclaimed Italian auteur Nanni Moretti, it can be seen on 20 January.

The society’s season continues with A Walk in the Woods (3 Feb), Rams (17 Feb), Carol (3 Mar), Mustang (17 Mar), The Brand New Testament (7 Apr), Our Little Sister (21 Apr), Macbeth (5 May) and Victoria (19 May).

Films start at 7.30pm.

It costs £5 per film or £30 for any eight.

English-speaking films can be shown with subtitles when available, upon request, on the society’s new equipment.

Nick Taylor, Scarborough Council’s investment manager, served mulled wine and mince pies to shoppers and others who wanted to inspect the work in progress.

Meanwhile, in the Market Vaults down below, a young choir from Barrowcliff School sang their hearts out, children attended a Christmas decorations workshop and Yorkshire Air Ambulance operated a festive grotto.

Cllr Bill Chatt, the council’s portfolio holder for public health and housing, said: “There was a lot to celebrate at the Market Hall this

Christmas as we move towards the end of the building work and the start of a new era for the Market.

“We look forward to a fantastic 2017 for the Market Hall and Vaults”.

Work on the £2.7m revamp of the building continues. The mezzanine floor is almost complete and work on the hall is progressing well.

As work edges towards completion, the market has launched a prospectus for anyone interested in being part of the market’s future. It offers a range of shop and stall units, in the main market hall, on the mezzanine floor and in the Vaults.

New year’S EVE FLAMBOROUGH FIRE FESTIVAL, Flamborough. The festival is a Viking themed parade, which welcomes everyone including children, families and friends. SCARBOROUGH SPORT Scarborough Review Golf THE East Riding and District of York Winter Alliance held their last fixture of 2016 at Filey Golf Club on a relatively pleasant day for golf. All twenty-six competing clubs fielded two pairs both of whom counted towards the league standings. Everyone went off at the same time in a shotgun start and they all played at a good pace so managed finished in good light. The scoring in the better ball was very competitive and the Hessle pairing of Andy Lockwood (1) & Brian Drake (5) combined perfectly, each appearing on their card nine times, to claim the Tankards with a net 62. They completed the front nine on net 30 and came back in net 32 having posted 4 gross and 5 net birdies but crucially they didn’t drop a shot at any hole. Filey members Ian Nichol (6) & Matthew Dickens (11) also made the turn in 30, Dickens having carded a net 1 at the par 4 fourth hole, between them they added another seven birdies but lost out when they dropped shots at the 6th & 15th holes to finish at net 63. That score was then equalled by Paul Westoby (8) and Paul Gardner (13) from Hainsworth Park, after completing nine holes in net 28 this pair appeared to be in pole position for the win, however, they played well but couldn’t maintain their birdie momentum and posted a level par net 35 for the back nine. In the race for The Hull Daily Mail Challenge Bowl there are now three clubs vying for the top spot separated by just two shots. The two best team scores on the day were posted by Hessle and Hainsworth Park who both totalled 130.

Hornsea retained the lead with a 133 whilst Heworth dropped back to third place after a 135. Filey are still in contention but with a lot to do to threaten the leaders whilst the Scarborough clubs remain somewhat adrift, South Cliff are in eighth position with North Cliff a distant 14th.

South Cliff pair Lee Ridsdale (17) & Andy Noble (20) must have thought they were in pole position when they handed in an excellent net 60 but had to settle for second place. Third place went to Tony Creaser (18) & Derek Mastaglio (23) from Malton & Norton after they finished on another good score of net 61. The last of the prize vouchers was claimed by another Malton pair Graham Laws (20) & Mike Parkin (22) who just edged out Steve Ingleston (19) & Alan Atkinson (16) of Whitby on a back nine count back, after both pairs had posted net 63. The North Cliff pairing of Ade Owenson (17) & Colin Spinks (20) managed to get into sixth place with a net 64. The best team score of the day came from Malton & Norton whose three scoring cards were 61, 63 & 66 for a 190 total, South Cliff continued their run of consistently good scores with 195 whilst Driffield, despite the heroics of Campling & Long, totalled 196. Mooney (21) came out on top in that one, leaving the current South Cliff Lady Captain Caroline Woodhouse (21) and Ewa Graczyk (16) in 5th spot. Sixth prize went to Jean Armitage-Beattie (19) & Eleanor Paterson (25) from North Cliff with 32 points.

The last prize for seventh was claimed by Karen Marshall (22) & Susan Bennison (24) of Whitby who finished on 31 points, they just pipped Pat Palmer (19) & Barbara Brocklehurst (20) from North Cliff, again on a count back.

The ever reliable Nigel Middleton (9) claimed third place with 41 points but after carding 24 on the outward leg, including three birdies, he slipped up at the seventeenth making a double bogey that left him just short. The division two was won by Stuart Oldfield (15) who was another that got off to limp start, he had only one par in the first six holes but still managed to card 18 points on the front nine. Thereafter he stormed home making 25 points in the process and his total of 43 points took first place. Second spot went to Josh Blades (18) who finished on 40 points after a good round where he used his shots well, Neil Cox (16) also made steady and competent progress

In division one, James Gomersall (13) had a bit of an erratic start with only one par and a no score in the first five holes but he recovered well to make 18 points on the first nine. He kept his form going through the way back to add another 24 points for a total of 42 and took first place after a count back.

Callum Chaplin (10) also posted 42 points

throughout his round and clinched third place on 39 points.

From the touchline

WITH Christmas just behind us it’s time to take stock of the first half of Scarborough RUFC’s season in the Rugby Football Union’s (RFU) Yorkshire Division One. The Seasiders have had a successful few months winning eight out of 14 games; however a certain lack of consistency has seen them unable to sustain more than three wins in a row which has seen them falter in their bid for promotion from Yorkshire One. They began the month with convincing wins against promotion-rivals Old Brodleians on the road and struggling Heath RFC at home.

A trip to Humberside to take on Hullensians where they have had little success lately was forecast to be a bit of a ‘walk in the park’ as the home side had been hammered 52-19 at bottom club Acklam the previous week.

However, rumour of their demise were indeed exaggerated and the game was a real ‘muck and nettles’ encounter with Scarborough scoring a try in injury time to clinch a 15-8 win.

The Scarborough players were under no illusion that they had gotten out of jail

in a very closely fought game and girded their loins for the trip to fellow promotion hopefuls York the following week. They made a great start to the game with a converted try from in-form fly-half Tom Harrison but struggled thereafter and slid to a narrow 2013 defeat; not good news with all-conquering Bridlington next up in the much anticipated local derby at Silver Royd. As the players trudged off the paddock at Clifton Park the news came through that Bridlington had lost for the first time this season going down 28-26 to Heath on their own patch at Dukes Park.

This news lifted Scarborough spirits and the clash with Bridlington was even more keenly anticipated.

As I write this I’m still recovering from what was undoubtedly the best game played at Scarborough this season. No doubt encouraged by much advertising and social media comment over 900 turned up at Silver Royd with over 200 guests dining before the kick-off.

Bridlington took an early first half lead when they scored a converted try from close range in the eigth minute. In front of the large and vocal home support Scarborough came straight back and were rewarded by a try from No8 Isaac Faamau converted by fly-half Tom Harrison to level at 7-7. Faamau was in the thick of things when a break from deep in home territory saw the big No8 release lock Aaron Wilson who scored in the corner to see the Seasiders lead 12-7 at the break.

From the Sidelines UNBEATEN 2016 FOR WEST PIER REIGNING champions West Pier went into the Christmas break six points clear at the top of the Scarborough News District League first division. Pier were unbeaten in all competitions in 2016 (their 40th anniversary year), and ended the year with a 7-0 thumping of Seamer Sports (two goals apiece from Neil Thomas and Martin Cooper), followed by a 5-1 away success against second placed Hunmanby United with strikes from Martin Cooper 2, Will Jenkinson, Neil Thomas and Gary Thomas. Pier have now won all nine league matches, and Edgehill, who won 5-0 at Whitby Fishermen to go fourth in the table, appear to be best bets to challenge them for the title as they have won six and lost one of their seven league games. On target at Whitby were James Gunn 2, Kurtis Henderson, Jackson Jowett and Kieran Link.

Scarborough fly-half Danielle Rowley unfortunately broke her leg during the game and is in ‘pot’ and recovering. The Valkryies first four games in the new year are away from home; their first home game in 2017 is on the 26th February against West Park Leeds.

Yorkshire One

Although defeated at the death, I think it was Scarborough’s best performance of the season and augers well for the months ahead. The new year starts with a trip to West Leeds who won a close-encounter 29-27 at Silver Royd earlier in the season. That game on the 7th of January is followed by the visit of Yarnbury and North Ribblesdale on consecutive Saturdays with a visit to Middlesbrough to take on resurgent Acklam on the 28th.

Scarborough’s ladies side, the Valkryies finished the first half of their league season lying second behind York RI ladies in the Women’s National League North Two. Their December fixtures saw them win 26-7 on the road at West Park Leeds on the 4th followed by a 3-15 home defeat by Bishop Auckland.

Finally my Player of the Month by a country mile is fly-half Tom Harrison.

A club stalwart, Tom is on fire at the moment but more than that he has matured as a player and his tactical nous has developed to a point where is now running games from number ten.

His kicking from hand and off the ground is a great asset as is his change of pace going forward and his tackling of late has been a revelation. Let’s hope he continues his success in the new year. I wish you all a very happy 2017.

A review of the local soccer scene....

Edgehill Res were third after a 10-3 thrashing of Newlands Park Res, with strikes from Liam Cooper 4, Jon Cairns 4, Martyn Ferrey and Phil Warnett, while Seamer Sports Res were fourth after a 3-1 defeat of Scalby with goals from Dan Jewitt, Danny Price and Tom Adams.

TIGHT AT TOP OF DIV THREE DESPITE a three points deduction for breach of rules, Edgehill 3rds were four points clear of both Itis Itis Rovers and Sherburn at the top of division three at Christmas, although both their nearest rivals had three games in hand. A 7-4 win for Edgehill 3rds against Commercial saw strikes from Lee Cappleman 2, Tom Scales, Kyle O'Toole, Martin Cappleman, Mark Gamble and Gary Hepples, while Sam Rackham scored twice in Sherburn's 6-0 away win against struggling Ayton. The third division was hit by the resignation of Westover Reserves at the end of November.

They were struggling for players after losing all five league games this season.

I've been reading up on the players who sadly lost their lives, it was a team built up from youngsters and journey men, no real stars and fought every game with determination and team work. All the players had a story, but I've picked out a few now.

THERE are people in the world that don't understand why 22 men run around chasing and kicking a pig’s bladder. The same people don't understand why footballers like Wayne Rooney can be paid £250k a week (to be honest I don't understand that one either).

But when a tragedy strikes like it did in Columbia, South America on Monday 28th November, the world of football and beyond mourn for the loss of life that day.

Brazilian football was torn apart that day as Chapecoense team plane crashed heading to a cup final in Medellin.

I have to be honest and say only these past few days I've been brushing up on their rise up from the lower echelons of Brazilian football to the second most important competition in South America 'The Copa Sudamericana’.

This is a club that as recently as 2009 were still in Brazil's fourth division. It is only in the last three years that they have established themselves as a national force.

81 souls out of the 77 souls have survived, three of them were players among the survivors. They include defenders Alan Ruschel and Helio Zemper, and reserve goalkeeper Jakson Follman.

Brazil, as we know, is a nation that has taken our beautiful game to its heart and this team has had a fairy tale with a tragic end.

Cleber Santana Loureiro, 35 was the most experienced. He played for some of Brazil’s bigger team’s like Santos and Spain's Atletico Madrid.

Bruno Rangel, 34, Rangel (left) was the top scorer in the club's history, with 81 goals. his daughter was due to celebrate her eighth birthday on Wednesday, and a party had been planned for Friday.

Sport in Brief CYCLING: TOUR DE YORKSHIRE BACK IN SCARBOROUGH

THE first stage of the 2017 Tour de Yorkshire cycling race will start from Bridlington sea front on Friday 28 April. The 173 killometre stage will go through Driffield, Pocklington, Malton, Pickering and Whitby before finishing at the North Bay in Scarborough. This will be the third time that the hugely popular event has visited Scarborough, and the two previous occassions saw thousands of spectators lining the route of the race.

You would have seen the posts on social media about goalkeeper Marcos Danilo Padilha, 31. He was pulled from the wreckage and suffered two broken legs and arms, fractured ribs, internal bleeding and he later passed away in hospital. He saved a last minute attempted goal from Argentina's San Lorenzo to get them to the final, he was the team’s idol and favourite to win a fans’ player of the year award before this incident. But since Monday thousands of votes have been registered.

You must think back a long time ago on a cold February day in Munich when British European Airways flight 609 crashed on its third attempt to take off from a slush-covered runway at Munich-Riem Airport, 23 lives were lost that day and a talented Manchester United team was lost, "The Busby Babes".

World football has come together in solidarity and are trying to make sure the team from Brazil will never be forgotten. The opposition for the final have conceded the tittle to them, reports are coming out saying the team will not be relegated for the next three years as the club rebuilds. Also teams are offering

It is very moving and I think the people who see footballers as over paid and just eat prawn sandwiches may have been moved by this little club from South America. A team who have been a revelation in their home country but have come to a tragic end. To me they will always be forever more remembered as Campeões Eternos.

Students win Boro shirts

by Dave Barry TWO students have won Scarborough Athletic shirts after entering a competition at Scarborough Engineering Week (SEW).

Molly Bastiman of Wykeham primary school and Luke Jordan of Scarborough UTC correctly explained how gas gets to Knapton generating station, named four gas products and identified the processes that take place in a gas turbine.

Their names were drawn from over a thousand entries.

The competition was run by Knapton-based Third Energy, whose operations manager, Shaun Zablocki, said: “It’s great to see young people taking such an interest in engineering – and our local football team. Hopefully, as a result of SEW, we will see some of these youngsters taking up engineering positions in a booming Yorkshire gas industry in a few years’ time”.

Boro’s commercial director, Nick Finch, added: “As a community club, it’s great to see youngsters showing such an interest in both the club and local businesses. SEW is a great local initiative and we wholeheartedly support it”. * UPM Raflatac has paid for rain-jackets and other kit for Boro’s under-16s, whose

manager Mark Priestley said: “To have a local company involved in grass-roots football is great and we would all like to thank Neil and his team for backing us again”.

The company also supports Boro’s Kids Go Free scheme, under which children aged 11 and under can attend home matches without paying.
