Tea, everyone? Welcome to the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. We say that because things have gone a bit March-hare mad around the Your Local Link office (well, more so than usual). The month got off to a pretty dramatic start when our accounts guru Helen came off her moped on the way to work and broke her wrist. During the week she was off recovering we were, of course, dying to see her – mainly so we could write something funny on her cast. Thank goodness, Helen returned to us more or less in one piece a week later (surely that’s the

latest anyone has ever been for work?), and set about her important duties. But, like most people stuck in a cast, she felt an itch on her forearm and decided to scratch at it with a knitting needle. The second trip to A&E was quicker than the first... Meanwhile, Krystal has started her part-time university course in English Literature and has begun using big words that we don’t understand. Of course, we’re thrilled for her, though we must admit that conversations with her have changed. In true Krystal fashion she can, of course, still talk the

hind legs off a T-Rex, but now she’s only interested in talking about writers like Wordsworth and Byron. This left Ellen feeling a tad awkward when, instead of being able to chat to Krystal about the latest issue of Heat magazine, she was forced into a conversation about the representation of working class women in the works of Charles Dickens. Do as the rest of do, Ellen; just nod along and smile. Hopefully your March will be slightly less mad, so whatever you’re up to, have fun!

The ups and downs of life as seen by our very own (very) grumpy, (almost) old woman

decisions,

decisions

It’s been estimated we make about 3000 decisions every day. Actually, I just made that figure up, but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it were true.

Life is just too complicated these days. If you don’t believe me, go into Starbucks and order a coffee. Go on, I dare you. Just tell them you want a cup of coffee, and watch the server’s face. I guarantee he or she won’t know what you’re talking about. Because it’s not that simple. Once upon a time, the most challenging question you were likely to be asked in a coffee shop was ‘Do you take sugar?’ These days you have to decide whether you want your beverage flat or foamy, Blue Mountain or Ethiopian, with extra shots or added syrup.

Our lives are so full of choice, it just gets confusing. Pop out for a sandwich at lunchtime and it’s not just a matter of white or brown bread. It’s wholemeal, granary, panini, baguette, ciabata, with or without butter or low fat spread. I don’t know about you, but my lunch hour is usually over before I’ve even got as far as deciding what to put inside the wretched thing.

And then there’s the whole business of entertainment. When I was a kid, I remember the idea of getting a fourth TV channel nearly blew my mind. Now there are more like 400 on our TV (although to be fair, at any given time at least half of them are showing an old episode of Top Gear), not to mention all those online movie packages. And what happens? I

WANTED

12

You’d think all that choice would make us happy, but it doesn’t. According to a psychological study, we end up crippled by indecision and left forever wondering if we’ve made the right decision. A feeling you’ll know only too well if you’ve ever tried shopping online. You can spend days searching the price comparison sites for the best deal on an energy provider or a new washing machine, then even longer wondering if you could have found a better one. I’ve spent the past two weeks trying to plan a night out with some friends. After rejecting the dozen or so films on offer at Vue and City Screen, we decided to go out for a meal. But should it be Italian, gourmet burgers, Thai or tapas? In the end we almost gave up. ‘We could always go out for a coffee instead?’ my friend suggested. If only it were that simple…

slump on the sofa, mindlessly flicking between them all. What happened to the good old days, when we all watched Coronation Street?

Donna...

Hot Would-be writers. I just wanted to take the opportunity to thank everyone who came to my ‘Write A Novel In A Day’ workshops in November and February. I was very nervous at the idea of talking all day (unbelievable as it may seem) but everyone was so friendly and made it very easy for me. Thanks, guys! I hope to see your literary efforts on the bookshelves very soon. And thanks, of course, to Your Local Link for helping to make both days a sell-out success!

Not Charity bags through your door. I’m not talking about the one from bona fide charities, which are actually really useful when you can’t be bothered to schlep your unwanted stuff to the charity shop. No, I mean those ones from dubious charities we’ve never heard of. They’re usually collected by an agency, who promise to give ‘a proportion’ (usually very small) of the money to the charity concerned. Read the small print before you fill up those bags and hand them over!

Advice for Landlords If you own another property, having tenants live in it, keep the building in a good state of repair, and pay you rent, is a wonderful investment for your future. However, it can be very easy for a landlord to overlook the associated costs of dealing with tenants who might not live up to their commitments. As a Landlord, you might feel that the law is stacked up against you when it comes to the unpleasant business of evicting tenants. But did you know that the penalties for getting it wrong can be very costly? None of us can afford to lose thousands of pounds because of a disrepair claim or in the wake of an unlawful eviction – nor will you wish to be fined for handling a tenant’s bond deposit incorrectly.

Our advice would be to get legal advice as soon as possible to ensure that your dealings during a dispute with your tenants are professional. At Harland & Co we can give you all the information you need to ensure you get the best possible return from your investment. Contact Kevin Grant for more information.

Horoscopes March 2014

Starsign of the month... Pisces (19th February- 20th March)

here are a few famous faces you share your sign with

by James Christie n For details of private readings phone 07884 107100 or 01423 339770 Email: jcp@magepublishing.co.uk

This sounds hard, but don’t waste too much time feeling sorry for someone who has been less fortunate than yourself. Life is a game, full of winners and losers. At this point in time, you’re one of the winners, and it’s taken a lot of hard work and sacrifice to get where you are. Recognise this fact and enjoy it. March is a month for finding some new money and a greater degree of fiscal solvency, but it is also a time for considering long term investments, and deciding on what is the best thing for you to do with your money. For some this might be the choice of shopping in Waitrose or Asda, while for others, it might involve balancing the idea of stocks and shares against the purchase of property. Me? Well, I’d trust the stock market as far as I could throw it, so I’d probably go the property route, or put my money into gold bullion or art. As it is, I’ll shove a tenner in my sock under the bed, and hope for the best.

CANCER

(21st March - 19th April)

(20th April - 20th May)

(21st May - 20th June)

(21st June - 22nd July)

From 20th onwards, a zing of romance should make the heart beat a little faster. It might be a good time, especially during the first ten days or so, to initiate reunions and work to achieve tighter bonds within the broader family.

You may find yourself worrying over things that haven’t happened yet – and may never happen, so concentrate on being positive and up-beat, taking each day as it comes. There is great support from a lover/partner who really does care about you, even if they don’t fully understand your deepest fears.

The first week of the month augers well for travel and for finding a few new solutions to old problems. The last week of the month favours relationships, celebrations and anniversaries. It’s the middle two weeks which are a bit of a slog! Keep your nose to the grindstone.

Perhaps a good month for male career professionals, but not such a great time for the ladies of the sign who have to balance their dreams and visions against hard reality. Some new balance needs to be found in a key relationship, and watch for legal dealings between 15th and 22nd.

14

Anyone involved in the arts, media, communications or entertainment industry should have a corker of a month, but for all Leos there are some choices and decisions to be made, probably between 21st and 28th, that will have an influence over your pathways.

VIRGO (24th August - 22nd September) One quite awkward (and very important) decision to be made during the first days of the month, almost certainly connected with business and finance. Avoid any kind of knee jerk reaction. A busy period on the work scene, finances quite good, but not a lot of spare cash for pleasure.

LIBRA (23rd September- 22nd October) Some extra responsibility on your shoulders between 1st and 7th but with some recognition and reward between 8th and 15th. Relationships and affairs of the heart dominate the second half of the month, with some tension and excitement in the wind.

scorpio (23rd October - 21st November) Beware of bad pennies from the past who want to play a role in your present. This is not a good idea and is something that should be resisted, especially by those who are actually tempted to travel such a

pathway. Don’t forget your past, but refuse to live in it. There is more waiting for you in your future.

the best of york

LEO (23rd July - 23rd August)

sagittarius (22nd November - 21st December) This month sees the ending of things that need to be ended. Perhaps an era, or a way of thinking, or possibly a code of ethics or priorities. You won’t have a great deal of choice in the great scheme of things, and this is a time for going with the flow.

Capricorn (22nd December - 19th January) Rather a despondent mood at the beginning of the month as you seem to be weighed down by a dozen different worries, but everything changes quite dramatically for the better between 10th and 17th when someone shows you a way forwards.

aquarius (20th January - 18th February) Some good advice and stimulating conversations with a younger member of the family, who despite their youth, may well be able to teach the old dog a few new tricks. In emotional relationships yours is very much a supporting role at this time, but even so, you should make your opinions known and your voice heard.

Duncan Morter, MD of Crombie Wilkinson Solicitors, hands over the charity cheque to Katie and Irene of York Carers Forum.

Clever Crombies The folks at Crombie Wilkinson Solicitors have been so busy that we’re not just congratulating them once – but twice! The team have recently dug deep to offer a much-appreciated £850 to York Carers Forum, the charity who provide support to unpaid carers in the York area, to help them with a project to take their carers services to rural areas. But their ongoing charitable efforts aren’t all – they’ve also expanded, bringing the total number of staff to over

90 across York, Selby and Malton. Duncan Morter, Managing Director, says their focus on client satisfaction and delivery of legal services efficiently has been reinforced by their commitment to having the right people in place. “This is good news for both the firm and our clients and demonstrates our growth and positive forward outlook,” says Duncan. Do you have something to say to City of York Council? Now is your chance to be heard by the people that make the decisions in our city – face to face. Residents are invited to attend the new Community Conversation meetings, which will be attended by representatives of the council, including leader James Alexander. There the councillors and cabinet members will answer any questions about the running of the city, as well as listening to ideas and feedback you might have. The meetings will also serve as a great chance to find out about events and activities taking place in your local area, as groups, clubs and societies are invited to set up stalls and join in with the conversation. There have already been meetings during February in the Haxby and Westfield wards, with the next meetings scheduled for 10th March in the Hull Road ward, 24th March for the Clifton ward and 9th April in the Heworth Without ward. York is your city, you pay for it, so make sure your voice is heard. n For details and future dates, visit www.york.gov.uk/community_conversations or call 551550.

Well dean! Now, we've known for a long time how fantastic York College is, but even our high expectations have been surpassed after the college was graded 'Outstanding' by Ofsted. To put that in context, York College is only the fourth General Further Education College in the whole of the UK to be awarded 'Outstanding' across each of the main areas since an incredibly tough new inspection framework was put into place in 2012. Inspectors were apparently impressed with the oustanding success rates for students, which have been consistently high for the past five years, as well as the student progression into higher-level study and employment. We're thrilled for everyone involved. A huge congratulations to the whole team at York College! n Visit www.yorkcollege.ac.uk or call 770200.

Golden oldies A big congratulations goes to York Hospital Radio as the team celebrates 50 years on the air! Volunteers have been manning the decks since 26th January 1964, when the first ever programme – a request show to the former Fulford Maternity and Naburn hospitals – was broadcast. Now broadcasting 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the station has come a long way since the 1960s, when the first programme began with 'Thank Heaven for Little Girls', requested by Maurice Chevalier – lasted 45 minutes and took 12 hours to record. Live broadcast didn't come until 1968, but now the station has a state-of-the-art studio close to the hospital, with a mixture of live and pre-recorded shows meaning that hospital patients can listen to the shows around the clock, free of charge. Well done to all! n Visit www.yorkhospitalradio.com or call 628800.

. . . s w o n k e h s a As far behind the scenes

Ahead of his appearance at the York Literature Festival, we snag a few precious minutes with poet, author and general wordsmith, Roger McGough. “There'll be new ones and old ones,” says Roger, speaking about the poems he'll be reciting at his performance at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre during the festival. “I won't really know until I get there, to be honest,” he continues in a soft Liverpudlian accent, “as every show is different.” Finding fame in the 1960s as a poet and musician, Roger regularly tours across the country with his poetry which has earned him a CBE and the position of president of the Poetry Society. His latest book, As Far As I Know, is an anthology of new poems from which Roger will be reading at the show on the evening of 28th March. “It'll be a whole different experience from just reading from the book though,” he explains, “as people will be able to hear my voice and see me wander about the stage. Some people expect it will be like watching a comedy gig, and certainly some of the stuff I do is funny - I hope - but there's also a lot in there about ageing and death – lots of personal stuff.”

Standing up Talking about the similarity of his performance to a stand-up comedy set, we asked if Roger ever changed the show to suit the audience. “Absolutely,” he says, “it's essential. I tend to start off with a few safe poems; classics that people might have heard and that I know will go down well. After that, judging by how the audience reacts, I know if I can play around a little bit and maybe try something new. It’s all about easing them into it, I suppose.” His anthology, As Far As I Know, was released almost two years ago now, with Roger touring extensively to promote and read from it. Does he ever get bored reading the same poems? “Not at all,” explains Roger, laughing. “Yeah, it’s true that the book was out two years ago, which means If someone in the audience has the poems are all about three never heard a poem, it’s new to years old, but they're new to them. That’s something really lots of people. It can sometimes be a bit frustrating reading what important I have to remember. I consider to be older poems,

especially when you're working on new stuff that has really caught your imagination, but it still needs that spot-on delivery. If someone in the audience has never heard a poem, it’s new to them. That's something really important I have to remember.” The beat goes on One of Roger's most famous works was the poetry anthology The Mersey Sound, published in 1967. The book has since become one of the most successful poetry collections in history and played a part in many school children's English lessons. “Yeah, and I don't do requests from it,” he jokes, speaking of the book. “I never get annoyed if people at the shows ask

to hear an old poem from Mersey Sound, or even some of the stuff I've done for kids since, because after all it’s what I'm known for. It’s just I like to keep the shows as modern as possible and try out my new poems.” Having performed here in the past, is Roger looking forward to returning to York. “I am indeed. York is a city that lends itself very well to festivals like this one. I've played lots of gigs there before and always had a great time. I'm looking forward to playing the Joseph Rowntree Theatre as well, as that's a new venue for me, but York itself is very familiar. My wife is from Knaresborough so we know the area well.” And after the festival? “Well, I'm working a new book of poems as we speak – just at the editing stage to be honest. I'm also putting together another book for Chiltern which should be done soon, and of course continuing to present Poetry Please on BBC Radio Four. What else...? Oh yeah, I'm doing this thing where my poems will be put in shops like Waitrose. Not a poem for Waitrose mind, something else. Not too sure about the details of that though...” Find out more about Roger McGough at www.rogermcgough.org.uk

Whatever it is we’re sure it will be great. See Roger at the York Literature Festival 2014 on 28th March at The Joseph Rowntree Theatre. To book call 623568.

Time Travel

Join us as we journey back in time. No pushing. This month: hungate

Probably the most changed area in the city centre, Hungate today is a largely open area between Stonebow and the river Foss, currently awaiting massive redevelopment. But the car park, office blocks and ongoing archaeological digs hide the fact that Hungate has been a thriving part of the city for almost 2000 years. We chat to Arran Johnson from York Archaeological Trust who worked to discover the lost secrets of Hungate. Who are you and what part did you play in the Hungate dig? My name is Arran and I'm an assistant field officer with York Archaeological Trust. I was lucky enough to be part of the small core team that worked on the Hungate site for over six years. My job involved recording and excavating every feature, starting with 20th century foundations and following the story through to a Roman graveyard. Top Right: Hungate from the Ordnance Survey map of 1851

24

Hungate Factoids • The archaeological investigation of the Hungate area has been aided by Hungate (York) Regeneration Ltd as part of the work being carried out to create a new urban neighbourhood. • The Hungate area is so called because the main street of Hungate ran through the middle of it. Only a small section of this road still remains. • In Roman times Hungate was a marshy area by the river Foss. It was thought that ships would have been moored there as it was near to an entrance to the fortress of Eboracum. It was also used, as Arran discovered, as a burial site. • The name Hungate comes from the Vikings and means ‘Place where dogs are kept’ (the Hun comes from hund or hound).

Why is Hungate archaeologically important? Hungate is the biggest open area the Archaeological Trust has been able to investigate within the city walls since Coppergate. Archaeology has evolved a lot in the intervening years meaning that we now have techniques and technologies to understand

• William the Conquer dammed the Foss and created The King’s Fishpool, a big marshy lake, which would have partially flooded the Hungate area. Seriously, that guy… • In the 19th century hundreds of cramped terraced houses were built around Hungate and housed some of York’s poorest residents. All this was mostly demolished in the 1930s.

What did you personally discover? Too much to list! It was an amazing site and I was very lucky. Digging in a city that's been inhabited for centuries means you find a lot of refuse and cess pits. These are a smelly but wonderful insight into diet, lifestyle and health containing lost shoes and brooches, hair and moss (which was the Viking equivalent of toilet paper) and even microscopic intestinal parasites. We hope to be able to contrast this information with later, Victorian toilet residues and compare the health and hygiene of the former Hungate residents.

sites to a far greater depth. York has been a hub of activity for over two millennia and the waterlogged soils preserve delicate organic features like timber buildings and Viking fabrics. The size of the trench, the complexity of the archaeology, and the excellent preservation have allowed us to put together a very detailed story for the Hungate area that also reveals a lot about York as a whole.

On a more pleasant note, I've discovered medieval pots, Roman graves complete with jewellery, a myriad of personal objects that had been lost down a Victorian sewer, several Viking houses, numerous coins, prehistoric flints, Viking antler combs and knife handles… the list goes on. The archaeology of Hungate really is of great importance. We returned to the site last summer for our annual training dig and discovered the lost church of St John the Baptist! That was a very Indiana Jones moment!

Time travel: Continued

Of all the items that were found, what was your favourite? That is difficult to answer. We had a Viking house with a cellar that was constructed not long after 969AD that was built using reused ship timbers felled in the southeast of England in 954AD. The vessel would have been seafaring, and around ten metres in length. Who knows how it ended up in a house in York. Human remains are the most personal thing an archaeologist can excavate. We found over 100 Roman graves including a number of children who received careful burials. Two burials that stood out were

26

of an infant who was lavishly interred in a lead coffin, and an adult buried with a mass of jet jewellery. The most poignant to me was an individual who had been largely disturbed by a later cesspit. All that remained was their legs, and as I cleaned these, I noticed their shoes had been neatly placed by their knees. Finally, in a Victorian back yard, I found a tiny chamber made of roof tile fragments in which a small bird had been buried. The nearby Bricklayers Arms used to have linnet singing competitions and I like to think that my discovery was once a beloved, prize-winning songbird.

Homecoming “While I was working on 19th century buildings along Dundas Street, an elderly chap popped his head up over the fence and asked what house number I was working on. It turned out I was stood in what was once the room in which he was born! That was an amazing moment.”

History repeating… “One miserable, rainy day I was digging out a huge and very smelly cesspit that was constantly filling with water. One of my wellies got stuck and came off. While I balanced on one leg and tried to retrieve it, I noticed a medieval leather shoe directly below my boot. It made me laugh to think some poor chap in the Middle Ages may have been tasked with mucking out this same pit and also lost a shoe. Looked like they didn’t get theirs back though!”

Then and Now Fancy digging deeper?

Definitely the most strikingly different Now and Then we’ve ever done, the image on the left shows the corner of Palmer Lane and Dundas Street in 1930. The image on the right shows the same street corner (and we’re really not kidding here) today. As you can see, quite a change. This ‘before and after’ shows just how much the Hungate area has changed and also how what is now so stark and bare was once a home to many people.

If you’d like to make wonderful discoveries like Arran then be sure to get involved in York Archaeological Trust’s spring and summer training dig. Anyone can get involved in Archaeology Live which is this year being held in the grounds of All Saints Church, North Street. n Email your interest to trainingdig@yorkat.co.uk If you would like to see some of the artefacts from the Hungate excavation, they can be seen at DIG on St Saviourgate as part of the Looking Back at Hungate exhibition. n Call 615505.

Rich in All but Money: Life in Hungate 1900-1938. Local author Van Wilson, together with the York Archaeological Trust, has published a book about Hungate in the early 20th century. ‘Rich in All but Money: Life in Hungate 1900-1938’ is available from www.yorkarchaeology.co.uk or most good booksellers in the city priced £9.99.

Sport report with DAN TAIT

No way, Jose... Who said the Premier League would be boring without Sir Alex Ferguson? Chelsea’s Jose Mourinho has come back to reclaim his title; not as top of the league, but as the king of mind games. The latest example of this is his sly digs at rivals Manchester City, who at one point he suggested just try to buy their way to success. This seems a bit rich coming from Chelsea, who when I was growing

Follow DAN on blog.yourlocallink.co.uk

up had crowds barely over 10,000 and had random cars for sale behind the goals. Speaking of cars, Mourinho has likened City to a Jaguar (with an L plate), which got me thinking which car my team, York City, could be likened to. Well, against Chesterfield we were clearly some sort of vehicle that was only really going in reverse, and pretty bad at corners; but after the next game (a last gasp victory at Fleetwood) we had the look of a Reliant Robin about us.

Fall from the stars?

I wonder if March will improve for the mighty Manchester United, who at time of writing seem to be floundering every game. No matter what David Moyes tries, it seems to fail. He also has to contend with Sir Alex Ferguson watching every fixture, and bizarrely, against Fulham at home, old crooner Mick Hucknall sitting alongside him in the director’s box. Hucknall was holding back the tears when Darren Bent equalised in the last minute, probably prompting Fergie to ask if he would be coming along to the next home game. I then imagine he would have replied “If you don’t know me by now…” Whatever the conversation, I am sure they will be hoping United are simply ready to come out of their current slump.

28

Dan’s Book

Back of the net March will see the season move towards the finishing line with the Minster Men playing hosts four times throughout the month. Exeter come to Bootham Crescent on 1st March, with Wycombe wandering in two weeks later (15th) before back-to-back home games with struggling Torquay United on 25th. Then there’s a tougher test, on paper, when Burton Albion arrive on 29th. The season has certainly been a mixed bag so far, but I think the promotion push is as much wishful thinking as me hoping that Justin Bieber’s recent arrest was for crimes against music.

Ashes to ashes... What a difference a year makes. Around this time last year, we were looking forward to the impending double Ashes series. “We have better players than them, we will thrash them...” So many idiots were saying the same thing (and I was one of them!). Now, I would rather we never played those Aussies again. We were thrashed in so many games over the three month long tour that the Australians put their third team out in the 20/20s and still won. I reckon if it had been drawn out any longer, the cast of Neighbours would have been scuttling us out. Well, we seem to have reacted in the right way by dropping our highest run scorer from the series (albeit, not a particularly great feat); someone who has since gone for nearly £1million at the IPL auction, and is one of the alltime greats for England in all forms of the game – Kevin Pietersen appears to have swung his bat for the last time in an England shirt. He may divide opinion, but he is definitely the best South African I have ever seen play for England. Ultimately we couldn’t cope with his flawed personality, though I can’t help but feel that Shane Warne is an equally abrasive character

yet Australia always got the best out of their maverick.

Ask the Web Wizard

The internet can be a scary place so we put some commonly asked questions to our Website Designer Dave. This month we asked...

“Whydoesmybusinessneedawebsite? An increasing number of people are using the internet to search for local services. Having a well built website is something that every business should be taking advantage of. This is especially true for small businesses and sole traders, many of whom could be losing trade to competitors who have already taken the plunge. You might not use the internet yourself, but trust me when I say that your customers do. Having a website for your business doesn't mean that you have to be a computer expert and know all the ins and outs of web design. We will handle all that for you and manage the site to make sure it stays active and keeps directing your customers to you. It will keep working away for you in the background and you don't even have to worry about emails. If you prefer we'll make sure that your phone number or company address is the main way people can get in touch. A website is also essential for any business that advertises in print publications like newspapers and Your Local Link magazine. If a prospective customer sees in your ad that you have a website, they can go there to find out more about you. This is where information like the background of your business, as well as customer testimonials, will come in handy. If a person is shopping around, the more information they can get, delivered in the most professional and accessible way possible, will help sway their decision. Also, I always find that nice big images of you at work will give customers a boost in confidence when contacting you. n If you would Dave to build your company an impressive website, email info@yourlocallink. co.uk

business Meet the manager If you haven't heard that York is soon to get it's own John Lewis store, then the rock you live under must be extremely sound proof. The giant store, which will will stock everything John Lewis is known for including top brand fashions and electrical items, is set to open at Monks Cross on 10th April. Interested to know what the new shop will be like – and also why so many of us Yorkies dashed

to get jobs there – we chatted to Robert Garnish, soon-to-be manager of the department store. n Read our full interview online at www.yourlocallink.co.uk and find the article called 'Meet the Manger'.

City Team York appoints new Chair Local retailer Adam Sinclair, Managing Director of Mulberry Hall on Stonegate, has been appointed Chair of City Team York. The collaborative organisation, launched in August 2012, joins together City of York Council, retailers, and a range of professional organisations from across the city centre, aiming to improve business growth, resilience and economic stability. Adam comments: “Now it is time for local businesses to take up responsibility for leading the City Team agenda, and jointly work with the council and other bodies to achieve economic vitality, visible success and a real buzz to the city centre.”

York’s economy keeps growing If you're looking for evidence that York is one of the greatest places on earth, just look out of your window. However, for those of you who like their evidence in numbers and statistics, we have a few to alleviate your doubt. City of York Council have released two sets of results that show that the economy of our city is a bulging behemoth that shows no signs of shrinking.

First off, the Centre for Cities has found that York is fourth in the UK for the lowest benefit claims, and that we're attracting an increasing number of new businesses. Secondly, the city has seen five-times the national growth rate in the creative and digital sector, providing 580 new jobs. Keep up the good work you lot.

Moving on up We've always known that York is an incredibly popular place to live, with the city consistently scoring high in polls, and because whenever our friends visit from out of town they threaten to never go home again. However, according to research from William H Brown, if our friends are really serious about staying, they're going to have to build their own place. The estate agency says that the number of properties available to buy must increase this year to meet buyer demand, as almost 20% more home buyers registering an interest – or six buyer registrations for each new property in 2013. And, with the average house price in York at over £214,000 according to the BBC, it seems that now really is a good time to sell. To find out more, visit www.williamhbrown.co.uk or call 621138.

Chair appointed to drive York's tourism development The current chair of Visit York, Jane Lady Gibson, has been appointed by the City of York Council to also drive forward York's marketing, tourism, cultural and business development. This means that Jane will be working with a broad range of partners and businesses to create a new approach to the way York attracts and supports new businesses, as well as developing what is currently offered to tourists. Of the appointment, Jane said she was, “keen to take the marketing of York to the next level by exploring a new way of working.” We wish her all the best. Keep an eye on these pages in future months to see what changes will be made.

We have all the latest news from things that go vroom!

Spy-speed driving We’re all used to seeing the police, ambulances and fire engines dashing though the city at top speeds – and rightly so. But soon the flashing lights of the emergency services won’t be the only vehicles to legally exceed the speed limits following changes to the law by the Department of Transport. This is good news for James Bond, as along with mountain rescue teams, cars transporting human transplant organs and bomb disposal units, MI5 and MI6 intelligent officers (spies, to us and thee) can now legally break the speed limit. This came as a surprise to us, as we’ve only ever seen 007 drive above 100mph. In the next Bond film we expect Daniel Craig to shout from his Aston Martin at the terrorist he’s chasing, “I’m doing this legally!”

Le-GO! Ever played with Lego? If your childhood memories are now conjuring happy images of model houses, wonky aeroplanes and yellow-headed minifigures, we know of one chap who has gone one better. Raul Oaida from Romania has spent around £75,000 and used half a million Lego bricks to build a working, drivable car! The vehicle, which took Raul 20 months to complete, can travel at a maximum speed of 20mph and has a Lego air-powered engine. A video of him driving his car has already attracted millions of views on YouTube, as well as a world tour. Of the build, Raul said, “There are no manuals about how to build a car from Lego.” Really Raul? That’s strange.

Wave goodbye to the wipers Aw, the humble windscreen wiper. They’re your best friends on the road when it’s throwing it down with rain or when winter grit gets smeared across your pride and joy.

But it seems that wipers are set to be consigned to motoring museums; that is if British car company McLaren get their way. The supercar maker are currently developing a special windscreen that repels water and dirt by way of ultrasound, employing sub-sonic vibrations to keep the glass clear. The technology comes straight from fighter jets and it is thought that McLaren will have the windscreens in their cars by next year. Do bear in mind though; McLaren’s prices usually start at around £170,000, so probably best to get saving now…

Now on the waste side, there are a few things to check if you notice your machine isn’t emptying, or there is water on the floor. It may well be that the drain the washer is trying to empty into is blocked by solids flushed out during the rinse cycle, but it is also worth noting that during cold weather the drain can freeze solid. Either way, check before rushing out and buying a new machine. n For advice on all things electrical, visit www.htodd.co.uk or call 628676.

There are two distinct areas to the connection of a washing machine or dishwasher: incoming and waste water. With the incoming water supply, all appliances these days are cold fill only. Modern detergents allow for effective washing at far lower wash temperatures, so you can save the planet and your pocket. But what should you do with the old hot water supply? The best answer is to cap it off using a brass cap. This will prevent a leak

Design De-mystified by Becs.

Green shoots on dark days I don’t know about you, but right about now I’m pretty much done with dark days, long nights and miserable weather. I love getting cosy around Christmas time; shutting the weather out and hunkering down. But right now I’m ready to come out of hibernation and am desperate for some signs of life… With that in mind, I’m turning to all shades of Green. Even though the leaves may not be out on the trees just yet, there are ways and means of getting a fresh look into your home ahead of time. Now, stay with me; I know it’s a bit of a cliché. Using green to breathe a bit of life into your home around this time of year is not a new concept. But all greens are not made equal my friend, oh no. Take a look at these:

Serene Green If you’re not quite ready to take the plunge into the more vibrant greens, try “Serene Green”. I’ve created this category to incorporate many shades of green, which include mint green, apple whites, aqua, muted olive greens, and teal. These shades are easy on the eye and relaxing to boot. Whether in paint colours, furniture, or accessories, you can splash this kind of green liberally around your home and it will stay current for years to come.

Apple Green This is a shade that trend forecasters Scarlet Opus have dubbed “Chlorophyll Green”, and is a step forward from Pantone’s 2013 colour of the year: Emerald. It is described as “fresh, optimistic & celebratory”, but if you’re having trouble visualising it think Granny Smith green, not Golden Delicious. Used more sparingly than Serene Greens, Apple will undoubtedly bring a smile to your face without feeling too overbearing. Even if there’s not a lot of “Chlorophyll-ing” going on outside, you can be sure there’s plenty of it indoors.

Neon Green Not for the faint hearted; Neon – or Acid – Green is best used as an accent or pop of colour on a more muted background. If you want to sound really educated, be sure to call it “Chartreuse”. It can be a great zing against the industry’s Neutral-du-jour: Grey, or layered against other shades of green like teal. Accessories are a great way to work this shade into your home and it can be great teamed with fluorescent shades of pink too. You could even take the trend literally and commission your own neon light installation…

Hanging

splendour

Say bon voyage to those tired boring old windows, and let a bit of spring light into your home. We get some expert advice on trends and styles for the coming year from Curtain Up’s Shelagh Garside. The up and coming trends in interiors for 2014 are all about creating drama – but drama created with bold colours and designs that will stand the test of time. Greys and beiges are now becoming old hat in favour of deep colours like navy and plum. We are seeing more and more navy in curtain fabrics, so much so that navy has become the new neutral because it can blend so easily with other colours. To create a sense of luxury I would say that the textures to use are sumptuous velvet, earthy suede and

even corduroy; these fabrics are very durable and can take the darker colour schemes which are on trend for 2014. Big style news for 2014 is flora and fauna, with butterflies, birds and other animals mixed into the florals. These are never out of fashion and some traditional designs are being brought up to date with modern colours. Take a bold approach and mix the patterns to modernize the overall look. We all know that harmonious colours don’t have to match, and the same goes for

pattern finishes, so bring in different colours, textures and finishes to your rooms. Asian influences in the fabric world are long standing, and another design trend for 2014 is bold eastern inspired fabrics. With the layering of colour, pattern and texture, from as far away as Thailand and India, these fabrics create a warm cosy look which is also very relaxing.

Curtains or blinds?

What’s it to be? We take a look at the advantages of both window treatment styles. Curtains give..

Blinds give..

A personal touch. With thousands of colours, cloths and styles, curtains make it really easy to personalise any room.

Ease of use. Blinds are pretty easy to fit to any shape of window opening and don't require strong fitting that heavy curtains might.

Warmth. Thick curtains closed during winter nights help make your home warmer and save you money in fuel bills.

Value for money. Blinds are often cheaper than curtains, depending on the style.

Protection. Being able to completely close your curtains on sunny days will help protect the upholstery of your furniture from direct sunlight.

More space. As they fit the window closer than curtains they take up less room, therefore are perfect for windows in smaller rooms.

Grander designs

We take a look at a local property development project and talk to the people involved. You may have noticed a curious looking building just off Clifton Green – and if you have, you are one of the thousands of people who Mike and Erica Hammill have seen staring up at them from their bedroom window. Zero House, the distinctive, new-build

property on the corner of Water End and Clifton Green, was designed by architect Mark Bramhall of Maltonbased Bramhall Blenkharn. Making statements Mark Bramhall, the designer: “The house was very much a statement building. The owner was very keen to have a contemporary, sustainable house designed, but as the plot of land was in a conservation area this represented a challenge. The key was to respond positively to the corner site, and by thoughtful positioning of windows and the overall shaping of the building, a distinctive solution was found. Achieving the building was not without issues. There was a protracted process with planning, where numerous three-dimensional drawings were produced to show how the building would work in context, and not be an issue

46

to neighbouring properties. Zero House is seen by many as the first contemporary house in the City. The results are there to see, and with Mike's house, it is a testament that good design can work well in a historic city setting. It is a simple argument to follow; that good buildings of all ages can sit happily alongside each other.” Pushing boundaries Mike Hammill, the owner: “We really had to fight for this. Our original plans were rejected by the city planners and I can scarcely believe we managed to get planning permission in the end without going to appeal. It would've been easier to do something ordinary, certainly from a planning point of view, but my philosophy is that life is too short not to push boundaries. The previous house on the site was a run-down, four-bedroomed detached property from the 1930s.

Over 25 Years Experience T: 645516 / 07718 153433 This was bulldozed to make way for a bold statement that sits at the end of a street mostly filled with unremarkable architecture. It was a good location, and I could have refurbished the old house and moved on, but this was a chance to do something different, which is what I like doing – such as the striking property I developed overlooking Holgate Windmill. So I got heavily involved in the design process and happily tweaked the

proposals coming from Bramhall Blenkharn. I love the finished house, especially the silver foil panels that glint in the sunlight. Working long-term with the architects was a pleasure, and I really appreciated the high level of attention to detail that they work to. In fact, we are about to undertake another project together!” n Find out about other design projects undertaken by Bramhall Blenkharn by visiting www.brable.com

If you feel the call of nature in the middle of the night, you might have difficulty finding the light switch in the dark. If so, simply paint the switch with glow-in-the-dark paint. It dries clear so you won’t know its there until you really need it.

Nozzle no-no

Sick of the nozzles of spray paint cans clogging up when you’ve finished with them? To make sure they are clean and clear for your next project, simply remove the nozzle after use, stick it onto your cannister of DW-40, and squirt. Hey presto, ready for action.

On a roll Finished painting for the day, but need to do more tomorrow? Don’t wash your roller out, simply wrap it in cling film, making sure the ends are covered as well, and the paint on it will stay wet and usable until the next day.

Forgoodnessrake

If you’re busily raking up all those dead leaves that fell last year, spare a thought for your poor hands. By wrapping the handle of your rake with a length of foam insulation the rake will be a pleasure to grip and use all day. Blisters? What blisters?

Bit of advice

Drill bit keep slipping when drilling on hard or smooth surfaces? Simply find a washer with a hole slightly wider than your drill bit and tape it to the spot you’re drilling. It will act as a guide for your drill allowing you to glide straight in.

She bakes, she makes, she decorates… frankly there’s nothing our very own Rachel doesn’t know. Every month she’ll be passing on some of her favourite money and time saving tips… That's all, yolks If you've got a set in coffee stain on your favourite shirt, don't fret. Beat an egg yolk and then apply it to the stain with a terry cloth, working it in for about a minute. Rinse thoroughly with plain old water, and the stain should disappear. Break the mould Chest freezers are fantastic for storing extra food, but they’re often kept in garages or outhouses where they can get mouldy. To help keep yours mouldand rust-free, polish it with wax. What a drainer A blocked drain is never much fun, but don't worry – you might not have to get your hands dirty. First, try pouring in a mug full of baking soda, followed by the same amount of white vinegar. Leave it for five minutes or so, then pour down a couple of kettles' worth of boiling water. It might just shift it without you having to get the rubber gloves out!

Dream soda Do your towels smell a little musty? Wash them with a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda. Know your onions Does the smell of paint make you feel sick? Chop up an onion and pop it in the middle of the room when painting to absorb the smell. Of course, if the smell of onions makes you feel sick too, this might be counter productive!

Hello, Heworth!

You might think that you know everything there is to know about the suburb of Heworth, but we bet you don’t. Box of bourbons says you’ll learn something interesting if you read this. Bourbons as in the biccies, mind, not Bourbon the alcoholic beverage. We don’t want to go getting York tipsy.

History corner A rose by any other name... It's hard to imagine that the leafy suburb of Heworth was once a Roman, then Medieval, graveyard – but perhaps even more unbelievable is its violent history. The Battle of Heworth Moor in 1454 was the first in a series of clashes between the Percy and Neville families; a feud that played a huge part in causing the

50

Wars of the Roses. And if historians are correct, it's not hard to see why it helped to start a war. Lord Egremont, from the Percy family, was angered to discover that some of his strongholds, which had been confiscated years earlier by Ralph de Cromwell, would go to the Neville family when de Cromwell's niece and heiress, Maud, married into the family. Egremont's anger grew to such a point that he

planned to ambush the Neville family as they travelled back from Maud and Thomas' wedding. Egremont took along 1000 recruits from York who he had persuaded to join him. However, he didn't anticipate the size of the Neville retinue, and the bridal party were able to defend themselves and retreat to safety at Sheriff Hutton. The rest, as they say, is history. Game of Thrones fans – does

anyone else think this story may have inspired George R. R. Martin for a certain rather bloody scene in the third book? Hmm? A royal rumble It seems there's something in the air at Heworth Moor – on 3rd June 1642, almost 200 years since it saw the skirmish that led to the War of the Roses, the Meeting on Heworth Moor saw a clash between King Charles I and the Parliamentary party.

Fast facts Heworth Cricket Club is said to have been founded way back in 1784. Ever wondered where Tang Hall got it’s name? You probably won’t be surprised to learn that it used to just be a hall in parkland. Now it’s a neighbourhood of its own, but the name stuck. Back in 1881 the population of Heworth was just 610 – now, it’s estimated at around 15,000.

HAIR

Heworth was once home to a private asylum called Heworth Retreat. Converted from a private house by two surgeons in 1840, it could accommodate around 35 patients, half of whom were usually paupers.

Mary Ward, an English Roman Catholic nun who was the founder of the Sisters of Loreto, made her way to the village in 1642, and stayed there until her death. It is believed that she died at Heworth Manor in 1645.

SH

Judi isn't the only former Heworth notary to have been made Dame – Barbara Ward, an economist, writer and environmentalist interested in developing countries, was born in the village 20 years before the actress. She later founded the International Institute for Environment and Development and also became a Baroness. Dr Ronald Vincent Spivey attended Elmfield College in Heworth, and later in life officiated the marriage of Denis and Margaret Thatcher, and baptised their children. Charles had moved to York to raise an army and he called for a great meeting with his supporters. Around 70,000 people are said to have attended on Heworth Moor on 3rd June, one of whom was Lord Fairfax, who was sent by Parliament to present a petition to the king that entreated him to desist in raising troops. Charles attempted to evade receiving the petition, but Fairfax followed him and stuffed it on the pommel of the king's saddle. We're guessing he wasn't happy about this...

gardening Blooming bridge Bridges are often impressive feats of engineering, but usually filled with traffic and pollution. However, a new initiative in London to create a garden bridge to span the Thames will see Cockneys crossing the famous river surrounded by birdsong, bees and blooms. If all goes to plan, the bridge should be completed by 2017 and will cost around £150million. We reckon we could transform Lendal Bridge for much less than that, though... does anyone have any hanging baskets going spare?

Now that spring has arrived, your garden will be bursting with more life than ever. Take a few moments to see which of these you can spot in your back yard! Animals: You’ll no doubt have heard of ‘mad March hares’, but if you look out for them this month you might just see where that name comes from. Hares apparently display some rather odd behaviour during the mating season – even boxing one another! This month, also look out for the first of the migrating summer birds, such as chiff-chaffs and wheatears, and frogspawn in your pond. In late March, you may even spot some orange-tip butterflies.

Plants: March is a fantastic time for plants, as buds seem to begin to appear on just about everything! Take a trip to your local woodland to enjoy wild bluebells – the grounds at Beningbrough Hall offer a gorgeous display. Closer to home, look out for cylindrical, yellow clusters of flowers that hang from trees, known as catkins (which are so called because they resemble a kitten’s tail – how cute!). Also, you may spot the odd purple or yellow crocus, and daffodils should come out in full force this month.

Ask Chris...

Q.

Got a gardening question?

Chris Brown from Brown’s Nurseries can help

Q.

I have a new garden and would like you to recommend some evergreen shrubs to give structure and colour please.

Elaeagnus gilt edge. This robust evergreen has shinning green leaves with yellow margins. Japonica crotonifolia. The jade green shoots of this spectacular and dense bushy shrub develop into shiny, leathery green leaves which are blotched yellow.

We used to grow about half an acre of cold house tomatoes using experience passed own to me from my grandfather. First, start by choosing a reliable variety such as cherry, beef-steak, plum or ordinary. Sow your seeds indoors around February to March for greenhouse cropping, and March to April for outside cropping. Almost fill a seed tray with moist seed compost, and sow the seeds thinly over the surface, lightly covering them with vermiculite. Place in a warm dark place of about 18-20 degrees Celsius and keep the tray moist. When large enough, transplant them into small pots with potting compost.

Where winter temperatures are not low enough to severely inhibit their growth, shrubs with evergreen foliage provide some of the most worthwhile ornamental subjects for the garden. They come in an impressive range of shapes, sizes, textures and colours, adding variety as well as performance to the mixed bed or border. Most have flowers and fruit as a bonus. Some evergreen shrubs are so distinguished that they are ideal as courtyard or lawn specimens, while others with a low spreading habit make effective ground cover in sun or shade. Less hardy evergreens are usually more successful when grown in the shelter of other shrubs or a wall. Here a few good evergreen shrubs:

How do I grow tomatoes?

Once the plants have reached a height of eight to ten inches, they should be transferred to grow bags or large pots. Plants that are being put outside should be hardened, with all chance of frost having passed, before being put out.

Olearia macrodonta. This sturdy shrub has attractive, pale brown, and ultimately shaggy bark and holly-like leaves. Also, fragrant, daisy-like flowers will appear. Viburnum pragense. The narrow green leaves of this rigorous shrub are boldly veined on top. Creamy white flowers appear, with pink-tinged buds, produced on domed heads in the spring.

If you have a question for Chris, please email info@yourlocallink.co.uk. Call Chris on 766266.

Water the plants regularly, increasingly the amount when it gets warmer, and feed them with a tomato fertiliser once the first flowers appear, then approximately every two weeks. Support the main stem of the tomato plant with a bamboo cane or tomato twine. Take any side shoots off as they appear. If you tap the tomato trusses when the flowers are open – usually around midday – this will improve pollination. Harvesting should start late July for indoor crops, and August for outside crops. Happy salad days! Harvesting should start late July for indoor crops, and August for outside crops. Happy salad days!

You will need: 3 A jar 3 Some kitchen roll, or paper napkins 3 A broad bean seed 3 Water Instructions: Swirl a little bit of water around the jar, then add your kitchen roll or napkins – you may want to dampen this just a tad, too. Rest the bean on the kitchen roll in the jar, and you're all set! Now all you'll need to do is spray some water on your bean every few days. Within the first week you should see the roots start to grow, or germinate. Why not grow a few beans in different jars and experiment? Here are a few ideas: Grow one bean in the dark, and one in the light Turn one bean jar upside down for a while to see what the bean does Try adding food colouring to see if this has any effect Can you think of any other experiments you could try? make everything in your garden lovely with dean’s garden centre

FOCUS ON:

plan for march

The botanical boffins at Dean’s Garden Centre give us the low-down. The weather in March can be very changeable from warm spring sunshine to heavy snow, and the timing on many of the monthly tasks really depends on how mild the weather is. Borders Firstly, finish digging over empty borders; any late frosts will help break down heavy clay soils. This is a good time to apply a general purpose fertilizer to replace the nutrients washed away by winter rains. A good mulch of leaf mould, well rotted farmyard manure or any other organic matter can be applied on established borders before any annual weeds start to appear. This also helps to seal any moisture.

Roses March is also a good time to prune your Hybrid tea, Floribunda and Climbing roses. Start by removing any stems that have been damaged by the winter weather and also any badly positioned stems – those are ones that are pointing in the wrong direction ,or are going to rub on other stems, causing wounds and allowing in infection. Reduce any remaining stems back by half, and prune just above an outward facing bud, with the cut sloping away from the bud. Late flowering varieties of Clematis such as ‘The President’ and ‘Jackmanii’ can also be pruned now to prevent them from becoming woody. It also encourages flowering from a lower level.

Bulbs and bedding It’s time to start off summer flowering bulbs, such as Dahlia and Gladioli which can be put into pots and kept in a frost-free place. This gives them a good head start before planting them into the garden. Sow seeds of bedding plants, sweet peas and tomatoes in heated glasshouses or propagators. Any seedlings you have sown earlier can be pricked out now, taking care to handle the seeds by the leaves not the stems. If mild, hardy annuals can be started off in pots or sown direct at the end of the month. Plug plants If you have the space to keep plants heated you could opt to buy plug plants from your Garden Centre. This is a good way to start off Geranium, Impatiens and Begonia

as the young plants could be put straight into hanging baskets to get them established better. Don’t forget to check any plants over-wintering in there on a regular basis for signs of pest or disease. Open doors and vents open on mild days to encourage good air circulation. Ponds and lawns If the weather is mild and favourable then the lawn could have its first cut towards the end of March. Make sure that the blades are set high for the first couple of cuts. General pond maintenance, such as raking dead leaves and other debris out of the water, can begin. Thin out and cut back any dead stems from your pond plants, and introduce new ones as well.

Walkonthewildside

Every month we’ll be bringing you some top tips on making your garden a haven for wildlife. Digging a pond is simpler than you might imagine, and if you do it right you’ll need to do very little in terms of maintenance. As well as frogs, you can expect to attract dragonflies and beetles – and with them, you’ll see more birds. Here are the basics you’ll need to think about before you start digging:

Animal of the month...

frogs!

The transformation of frogspawn into tadpoles and then fully fledged adults is one of nature's most magical spectacles, but of course to be able to see it up close you're probably going to need a pond of your own (or a very good friend with one!).

Choose your location First things first – where will your pond be best situated? Look for somewhere sunny, and avoid trees – come autumn, you won’t want to be clearing fallen leaves from the top of the pond every two minutes! Your pond will also need dense planting along one edge for baby frogs to hide in, so bear that in mind. Hedges and logs nearby are also a good idea to provide a safe shelter for your scaly friends. Beware invasion No, we’re not talking about aliens, but over zealous plants which could take over and destroy the other flora in your pond. Think carefully about which species you would like to grow, and ask your local garden centre for advice on the best plants for your needs. Keep it varied Despite having to be careful with invasive varieties, choosing which plants to cultivate and show off in your pond is lots of fun. Aim for a

mixture of floating plants (like water hawthorn) and ones for the edges (like irises), so that you have a good variety and lots of interest. Make sure to maintain A well-planned pond will need little maintenance, but there will still be some work to do to ensure that your pond remains at its best. Before you get the spade out, make sure you can dedicate the time to cutting back plants, clearing away debris, topping up water levels and so on – lots of critters will be relying on you!

Has your pet’s breath been stopping you from snuggling up to him on the sofa at night? This bad odour could be an indicator of some serious health risks. Just like us, our pets also need regular check-ups by a dentist to help keep tooth and gum disease at bay. Did you know that 80% of cats and dogs may have some form of dental disease? The good news is that a large majority of these dental problems are treatable and could be prevented. But as our pets can’t really tell us what the problem might be, its up to us to spot the signs.

If so, a dental examination by your vet is essential. A thorough look at the animal’s mouth will be made and any essential treatments will be carried out. The vet will also give your pet’s teeth a good clean! So to catch potential harmful conditions and diseases early, watch for the signs. Oustanding, say Ofsted Turning negative headlines about childcare on their head, the team at York Montessori Nursery in Strensall are utterly thrilled to have recently received their second Outstanding judgement in all areas from Ofsted. The Ofsted inspectors praised the staff's knowledge of individual children as “second to none” and were deeply impressed with the nursery's “strong caring ethos, which enables them to provide very good security and stability for children.” Managing Director Helen Gration is, of course, immensely proud. “My staff are, quite simply, wonderful!” gushes Helen, who firmly believes that high-quality childcare settings can provide a valuable addition to a child's life. “The fact of the matter is we care, and we care greatly. Each child deserves to receive such attention whilst away from their parents. I feel such pride for the team at our Montessori nursery who consistently and devotedly cherish their role and seek

out ways to inspire each of the different characters that enter our rooms daily.” n Visit www.yorkmontessori.com or call 490339.

Howard Mosley-Chalk is a father and husband. But more importantly he is a man. As a boy he assumed time travel would have been invented by now, but at 32 he finds himself writing for Your Local Link. These are his (un)manly words.

Springing into action The days are lengthening, the weather is warming and the sun is shining just that little bit brighter. As the flowers bloom and the city walls are besieged by the swaying heads of daffodils, Spring has definitely begun... and a dread enters my heart. How has this happened so soon? I'm certain that only five minutes ago we were unwrapping presents on a chilly Christmas morning. Now, its the light when I get up and the other day I popped to shops without my coat. WITHOUT MY COAT. I didn't even notice until I got there, that’s how pleasant the temperature was. Behind closed doors You're probably wondering why I'm complaining about the end of winter and the start of the warmer months. You see, I relish autumn and winter; they're my kind of seasons. You stay indoors as much as possible and pursue indoor interests. All of my interests are indoor, in fact, from reading and writing to flying little helicopters around the living room. The trouble is that my children's interests are universal. As soon as the outside temperature rose above zero degrees my three year old asked to go outside and play in her sandpit. This caused my wife to give me 'the look'. Dear readers, I must admit to not being the handiest of men. Sure, I can put up shelves and put them

up well... just so long as you're not bothered about putting anything heavier than a bag of feathers of them. And although I did a rather spiffing job of assembling my daughter's sandpit last spring, I neglected to take all the winter precautions to protect it. Which is why the sandpit currently looks more like a foetid pond, or a open-cast mine that has been flooded. Hence 'the look'. Croc block I'll have to fix that, I suppose. In fact, the coming of spring has highlighted a tonne of other “little jobs”, as my wife calls them, that will need doing. By “little jobs” she actually means 'say goodbye to your weekend' jobs, and 'prepare to wrestle with spiders' jobs, such as clearing out the shed, scooping dead leaves from the front garden and power-hosing the patio. And somehow draining the sandpit while convincing the family of crocodiles that moved in there in January that they've overstayed their welcome. Hopefully by summer the garden will actually be a place in which the children can play without my wife and I worrying they'll get stuck in quicksand or be kidnapped by the mean-looking squirrels that live the trees at the back. Winter covers a multitude of sins. Roll on September.

And another thing...

Seriously, watch out for the big ones! As I mentioned, the spring clean of the garden will involve a tussle or two with a few arachnids. As spider season is usually September, when they all start to seek shelter from the cold in our houses, you'd think the spring would be all about little cute baby spiders. Wrong. So far I've seen about five giant spiders, the ones so tough that they stayed outside all winter! They're like the Geordies of the animal kingdom; cold does not effect them like the rest of us. So be warned, they're grumpy, they're mean and they're out there!

Imagine that!

A fountain of ideas If you were as devastated as me to hear that the fountain on Parliament Street, that central York landmark, was to be removed, relax... I'll sort it. That is because I think that the removal of the now-dry fountain (aww, remember when someone would put washing up liquid in it? Oh, the bubbles! Good times) is actually a good idea in terms of health and safety, and also as a way to build my zip-line idea I've had for a few years. Once removed, a giant tower should be built on the site of the fountain, taller even than the Minster. Then a long wire should be run between the two tall structures and tourists can be charged top-whack to zip between the two. Residents will be given a discount, and during the Residents Festival zipping will be free. Right, I'm on it. Dear James Alexander... Imagine that!

ASK THE EXPERT

Family matters

On the 29th March 2014 same sex couples can legally wed 10 years ago the Civil Partnership- Act introduced civil partnerships into England and Wales. Although the Act gave considerable legal rights to same sex couples, it fell short of allowing those couples to gain the same status as heterosexual couples. After much debate and controversy, and following receiving royal assent on 17th July 2013, same sex couples will be able to get married in the same way as a heterosexual couple. Wedding ceremonies for same sex couples may begin from 29th March 2014, with those who want to be amongst the first to marry needing to give notice by 13th March 2014. Same sex marriage legislation will introduce several important changes to those of a traditional Civil Partnership. These include: 1. The term ‘husband’ will include a man married to another man, and the term ‘wife’ will include a woman married to another woman; 2. Marriages can be conducted through either a civil ceremony or a religious ceremony, if the religious organisation has agreed to solemnize marriages of same sex couples according to

their religious organisation. Churches in England and Wales will not be allowed to conduct these ceremonies at all; 3. Marriages are solemnized by saying a prescribed form of words, rather than a civil partnership which is registered by signing a civil partnership document, with no words required to be spoken; 4. A Marriage certificate will be provided following the ceremony rather than a Civil Partnership Certificate; 5 In the event that either party wishes to end their marriage, they can do so by going through the divorce process and obtaining a Decree Absolute rather than obtaining a Dissolution of Civil Partnership. Can a civil partnership be converted into a same sex marriage? Under the legislation a civil partnership cannot yet be converted into a same sex marriage. In order for this to happen the civil partnership would have to be dissolved and then the couple will be free to marry under the current legislation.

A same sex couple in Barnsley are seeking judicial review of the government’s decision to delay implementing part of the Act, which does allow a civil partnership to be converted into a same sex marriage. The couple from Barnsley had planned to be amongst the first couples to transfer their civil partnership to a same sex marriage, however because of the delay they are unable to do this on the 29th March 2014, when other same sex couples can legally marry. It is hoped that towards the end of 2014, couples in a civil partnership will be able to convert their civil partnership into marriage.

Time to play If you feel that the constant trips to the park and games of hide and seek in the living room just aren't enough for your toddler, why not try a different approach? The York Steiner School in Fulford has been educating children in York for over 30 years, and now boasts over 200 pupils. If you were looking for an introduction to the Steiner method of education then their toddler groups are ideal. social networking types Whether you swap photos on Instagram or keep up with family on Facebook, we’ve been social networking for some time now. Personally my favourite places to reside are Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest (for anyone who is unsure what Pinterest is, it’s an inspiration site of images and advice categorised into various subjects to help people

further their hobbies, interests and aspirations). Now, like all walks of life, within the social networking sites subcultures have formed. I’ve put together a little guide to help you navigate your way through the good and the bad. The Naïve Spammers Ever get those posts pop up on your

newsfeed where there’s a nice little image wishing you luck and below a nasty threat explaining what will happen if you don’t pass the post onto the rest of your friends? These guys really need to man up and stop living in fear of empty threats. I didn’t share the last post I saw and my brother’s mate’s dog didn’t get stabbed six times by a protractor

Not-so-passive aggressive ranters Yes, you know the kind. The people who like to air their dirty laundry and are ‘not mentioning any names’ but then go on to describe in detail exactly who it is that they’re talking about, what they’ve done wrong and occasionally for good measure the street they live on. Awkward for everyone involved. The information over sharers These guys tell you when they’re eating, what they’re eating, where they’re staying, what bars they’re going to be in, what time of the day they usually go to the loo. If these information over sharers are in a relationship, expect close-ups of them snogging their partners, or intimate jokes across each other’s Facebook walls. The phrase Get a room springs to mind… The Health Freaks Constant check-in’s at the gym, motivational quotes, healthy food recipes and pictures of toned abs. Don’t get me wrong, selfimprovement is wonderful, but this kind of social networking can also

Top 10 for student experience

serve as a huge guilt trip for those of us who won’t be at the gym this evening. Thanks but no thanks, you do-gooders. The Comedians These people spend their days updating you on the hilarious scenarios that have happened throughout the day; Now we can’t be sure if all these things actually happen, or maybe the stories aren’t so great… they’re just told extremely well. Either way we had a giggle, so no one’s complaining. The Football Hooligans These guys just love football. If they’re not updating their status regarding a recent match, they’re arguing on someone else’s status about a recent match. They can also be seen with their team’s strip as their profile picture, or posting pictures of footballers mid action. Great… if you like football.

Your life, your choice When it comes to planning your wedding you might be so tied up deciding on the flowers, chair covers and stationery, that you forget to think about the ceremony itself. For many years brides and grooms-to-be that opted not to get married in a church only had the alternative option of a registry office or state service. But a Humanist ceremony, which are growing in popularity, could be the choice for you.

religious, nor did we particularly like the format of the state ceremony. We were married at the beautiful Dundas Castle just outside of Edinburgh, and our celebrant, Ivan, was a friendly and jolly chap. We wrote our own vows, decided upon the readings and music to be performed – in fact we designed every part of the ceremony. It was a day very much about us and our love.”

Humanists are people who do not believe in a god and who seek to live ethical lives on the basis of reason and humanity. Because of this, a Humanist wedding, civil partnership, funeral and naming/adoption ceremony is all about the person or people involved and can take any form, (but please note, you will also have to have the marriage officially registered - contact York Register Office on 654477 for details).

As with a Humanist wedding, the funeral services more commonly known as a celebration of life - focus wholly on the deceased. The celebrant works closely with the family to provide a personal, bespoke tribute. It can be precisely what the person would have wanted – and with friends and relatives sharing stories and anecdotes it can actually be quite fun.

Our Features Writer, Howard, had a Humanist wedding in 2009. “A Humanist wedding was the obvious choice for us, as my wife and I are not

Do you care?

That is the question you should be asking yourself, if you're looking for a career in the care sector. That is the first thing that Home Instead Senior Care will ask of all their new staff, whether they have experience of caring for older people or not. Because at Home Instead Senior Care they do things a little differently. Forget what you've seen or read in the media about the care industry, because this is a company that offers a genuine alternative to care homes and are therefore looking for genuinely alternative care givers. As a Home Instead carer you won't be rushing around, spending as little time as possible visiting your clients. Instead you'll get to know them, spending at least an hour in their home each visit providing support, building a relationship and trust – and having a laugh at the same time. There are no quick pop-ins with Home Instead Senior Care as their staff offer a companion-based service which enables older people to stay happily in their homes for longer. n So ask yourself – do you care? If the answer is yes, visit www.homeinstead.co.uk/york or call 599259.

today... Our Kelly has been such a good girl that we sent her to Select Beauty to go and enjoy some electrolysis hair removal. No, we're not sadists – she actually did really enjoy it. Honestly! “I was a little bit nervous about having electrolysis done, as I'd never experienced it before and I'd heard it was painful,” says Kelly, freshly smooth from her session at Select Beauty at the Marriott Hotel. “However, it wasn't what I thought it would be like at all.” The Apilus Platinum Pure computer used by the team involves an ultrarapid 27 MHz radio frequency, which permanently and rapidly eliminates hair of any colour. That sounds both complicated and painful to us, but Kelly says that despite her reservations, she was very pleasantly surprised. “It was much quicker than I expected, and actually quite relaxing!” says Kelly. “It made me want to go to sleep. It was nowhere near as painful as I thought it would be; in fact, I hardly felt anything. It's so worth it for permanent hair removal – the team really made me feel at ease, and the environment was relaxing and comfortable.” But don't just take Kelly's word for it – why not make the most of the 20% off voucher included on Select Beauty's advert in this magazine, and find out for yourself? There is relatively little down time with this treatment, which makes it an excellent choice. We recommend two peels for maximum results. Your skin may look a little pink and will peel for around 2-3 days. Following your treatment, you should moisturise the skin, which will reveal a smoother, new layer of skin with improved texture and tone. It is also important to avoid the sun for around four weeks. Laser Therapies and Pixel Technology Lasers can be used to treat pigmentation successfully. This is ideal if you have sun spots (Lentigines) or freckles that are too deep or resistant to peels. This is a relatively painless procedure and takes round 10 minutes! There

is very little downtime and depending on the type of pigmentation you will require between 1-3 sessions typically. Treatment costs from as little as £75. Dr Murad treatments Dr Murad, a Dermatologist and Pharmacist from Los Angeles, has a fantastic results-driven treatment package specifically for pigmentation problems. Lightening ingredients fade age spots and hyperpigmentation, and powerful antioxidants protect the skin from the sun and free radical damage to prevent premature ageing. A course of facials is recommended to treat pigmentation, and home products are also available to buy in clinic which have been clinically proven to help treat pigmentation.

Offering a wide variety of Murad products, and with products ranging from non-surgical augmentation to minor surgery, the team at Skin Doctor on Blossom Street combine excellent medical practice and expertise with a friendly, caring service. Visit www.skindoctorclinics.co.uk or call 633833.

health & beauty tips

Feast your eyes on this…

This month we’re bringing you the hottest hints and tips to make those eyes stand out. Get you! When applying mascara, don’t just do the underneath of your lashes. Apply on top first then push back up afterwards –they’ll look thicker.

Mae welcomes customers old & new

• Vaseline is your new best friend. Use it to smooth down unruly eyebrows or as great moisture therapy for your eyelashes. Wear it in the day without mascara to make your eyelashes appear thick and glossy, or with mascara for extra volume. • Make eyes look wider by applying white eyeliner to the inner rims. Using black eyeliner underneath will only make your eyes look smaller (although it can be helpful when going for the cat eye look). • Dab a highlighter (of the make-up variety) underneath your eyebrows to compliment your brow shape and make skin look healthier and plumper. • When using eyelash curlers, gently heat them up with your hairdryer to make your lashes super bouncy and stay up for longer. (be careful not to touch the skin of your eyelid with them though, ouch!)

Did you know that with 2.3 million treatments carried out each year, acupuncture is the one of the most popular forms of alternative and complementary therapies in the UK? That is why the Micklegate-based Northern College of Acupuncture is really getting behind Acupuncture Awareness Week, taking place this year between 3rd-10th March. The aim of the week, which is organised by the British Acupuncture Council, is to promote the treatment which is all too often seen by many to be a last resort, despite its widely recognised health benefits. The focus of the week will be back pain – something from which many people suffer from time to time. The great news for long-term sufferers is that NICE (the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) has recommended acupuncture as an effective treatment for lower back pain. If you are plagued by chronic back pain, perhaps the Northern College of Acupuncture could help. n To find out more about Acupuncture Awareness Week, visit www.introducingacupuncture.co.uk or to book a session at the College on Micklegate, call 343305.

Think that membership at a golf course will cost you your bread and putter (sorry), that the fees will drive you crazy (really sorry...)? Not if you head to Heworth Golf Club. Membership at the club on Muncastergate starts at just £40 per month – and if you're under 30, there's a discount; and green fees start from £10. As well as the fantastic, challenging course, you'll enjoy discounted food and drink in the clubhouse, play in competitions arranged by the club and meet new friends. Seems like a foregone conclusion to us. (sorry, we'll stop now.) n Visit www.heworthgolfclub.co.uk or call 426156.

fashion focus

Let’s face it, you’re reading this magazine because you’ve noticed just how hot-damn stylish we are at Your Local Link. But don’t worry, we’re not style-selfish and are in fact very happy to share our insider knowledge with you (just you though!). And so, here are the latest trends that will be causing jaws to drop this spring. Get out there and knock ‘em dead. Bright and breezy

Boho bling

Orange Crepe Dress Dorothy Perkins - £35 Dorothy Perkins hit the nail on the head with this one; The super flattering shape glides over curves effortlessly without being too short and what girl doesn’t love loose pleats?

On the jewellery front, big, bold and occasionally Bohemian has been the general consensus. Here’s our pick…

Orange has been commonplace across the catwalks; Dare we go as far as to say that orange is this season’s black? Yes, ladies, we want to see you tangoed. Here’s our pick of the best ways to take on the challenging trend.

Magnolia Perspex Statement Necklace - Accesorize - £25 The Perfect Statement necklace to jazz up any plain outfit. We particularly like the perspex panels. Pretty darn cool, don’t you think?

10-pack Rings H&M - £2.99 These rings are the ultimate Boho accessory. wear one or stack them up… whatever you decide, it’ll look awesome. We also think the price tag is somewhat persuasive.

Orange Duffle Bag Topshop - £38 We totally get that orange is bright, and a rather large commitment to standing out. If you want a statement piece without being covered from head to toe, this bag is the perfect accessory to take you from day to night and it’s-just-so-pretty. *Sigh*

Oriental glam Granted, it’s not too warm in spring for us guys up North, so a cover up is needed for all those sophisticated brunches and cocktails down by the river. We’d like to introduce you to the Kimono (we spotted a few across the Roberto Cavalli Spring collection a while back and fell in love).

Give us a tweet? #Twitter Kiss The Sky Summer Safari Elephant Kimono – Asos - £30

@LocalLinkYork

We love this Kimono with the open front design and the Boho print is also bang on trend too. Team this one with a tight cami top and a pair of skinny jeans for a sophisticated look to take you from day time shopping to cocktails at dusk.

Mononoke Fringed Floral Kimono – Missguided - £24.99 The sheer fabric and floral print make this Kimono super flirty and fun. We’d put it over an LBD (Little Black Dress) with some killer heels.

I’ve got to admit he’s done well, but every time we meet he taunts me about my own ‘lardiness’ and tells me I should ‘take control of my life’. He’s a real bore now. He’s also turned into a lightweight, which means no more beer and curry nights. I really miss my fat, funny friend. How do I get him back? JS, Bishopthorpe Why do you want him back? He’s put down the pints and pasties and done something about himself. You should be cheering him on, not trying to lure him back to his bad old ways with a Biriani. h home comforts I am 29, and live at home with my parents. I’m sick of my mum bossing me around. She’s always nagging me about keeping my room tidy, and she won’t let me hang around the house in my pyjamas on a weekend. How do I explain that I’m a responsible grown-up with a decent job? TH, Dringhouses Ooh, I don’t know…how about acting like one? Seriously, I’m amazed your mum draws the line at nagging you. If I were her, I’d be hauling your pyjamaclad backside down to the nearest lettings agency. For crying out loud, the poor woman isn’t asking you to wear a suit of armour. She just doesn’t want an oversized teenager making her home look messy. If you want to stay put and enjoy your home comforts, you need to put up with your parents’ rules. If you don’t, find a place of your own where you can lounge around in your PJs and put up your Power Rangers posters wherever you want.

h the spark’s gone out My partner and I got together after having an affair (we were both married). We met when we were working abroad, so our relationship was a series of secret meetings in hotels all over Europe. Now we’re living together, the spark seems to have gone. How do we get it back? KP, Heslington. Sorry to burst your bubble, KP, but you can’t . Because this is real life, and that’s about boring stuff like paying bills and putting the bins out, not secret meetings in glamorous hotels. I suspect the secrecy and intrigue was part of the attraction between you, and now that’ s gone and you’re just left with – each other. I suggest you either get used to reality, or you book lots of mini breaks. Good luck with making that work .

Local lass Beth McCarthy is flying the flag for York on The Voice, after impressing Kaiser Chiefs frontman Ricky Wilson.

The whole of York is surely behind 16-year-old Beth McCarthy, the talented Access to Music York student who wowed judges on The Voice. If you haven't caught the episode yet, Beth performed a unique version of LMFAO’s ‘I’m Sexy and I Know It’ during her debut appearance on the show. Her performance prompted coaches Ricky Wilson and Kylie Minogue to turn around, with Beth electing to join ‘Team Ricky’ for the next stages of the competition.

decided to audition for the popular TV series, the former Mount School pupil explains that she's always been the sort of musician who takes up everything that's thrown at her. “It took me a long time to decide to apply to The Voice because there can be negativity around such competitions,” says Beth, “but I believe there is no single way of succeeding. It’s best to be open minded and take all the opportunities you can.”

TV talent Beth's ambition is to be a successful singer-songwriter. She took up playing the guitar four years ago, and since then her style has developed in a pop direction with a hint of country/Americana. Asked why she

Instrumental influence Beth feels her Music Performance studies at Access to Music have prepared her well for opportunities like The Voice: “It would have been very difficult to dedicate myself to The Voice if I hadn’t chosen a specialist

music college,” says Beth. “I've been coming to the Jam Factory rehearsal studios since I was 11, and Access to Music seemed like a very natural progression. The course has helped with my confidence and skills and in taking the next steps. It allows you to make a product of yourself and your music – it helps you to become an artist.” We're joined by the whole of York, and certainly by the staff at Access to Music, in wishing Beth the very best of luck in her efforts! Access to Music is a music college offering learning and employability for all ages of UK and international students. Film Guide

The Grand Budapest Hotel This film promises to be nothing short of a delight. Written and directed by Wes Anderson (The Royal Tenenbaums, Fantastic Mr Fox), the 1920s story follows a young lobby boy named Zero Moustafa who is mentored by famed hotel concierge Gustave H (Ralph Fiennes). Gustave is bequeathed a valuable painting by one of the elderly guests when she is killed.

100

Her son vows revenge on Gustave and plans to frame him for the murder – cue hilarity as Gustave, Zero and his love interest Agatha attempt to hide the painting and themselves. The cast is incredibly impressive – alongside Fiennes (whose flirty and flattering performance as Gustave is sure to bring the house down) is Bill Murray, Harvey Keitel, Jude Law, Tilda Swinton, Adrien Brody – the list goes

on. It’s beautifully shot, and will surely be a treat for your eyes as well as your tickle bone. Need for Speed When you base a film on a video game, it’s pretty much a given that the special effects are going to be the star attraction. Street racer Tobey Marshall (AKA Aaron Paul from Breaking Bad) is hell bent on avenging his friend’s death by racing cross country (of course – it’s how we avenge the demise of all of our mates). Expect plenty of high octane car chases, helicopters, reckless stunts like standing on top of a car while it’s going around 100mph, and a leggy blonde. Oh, and lines like “We’ll settle this behind the wheel,” spoken in gravelly tones. Grrr. Muppets Most Wanted Who doesn’t love The Muppets? The latest caper from the furry bunch sees them on a grand world tour, when Kermit’s doppelgänger – who also happens to be the world’s most wanted criminal – causes mayhem by trying to steal our beloved Kermit’s identity. Starring comedy heavyweights Tina Fey, Ricky Gervais and Ty Burrell,

and with Lady Gaga, Celine Dion and P Diddy getting in on the action, it’s sure to be as star-studded as it is hilarious. One fan loved it so much, they posted an outraged tweet saying they couldn’t believe that it hadn’t been nominated for “247 awards”, only to be told that it wasn’t out yet. The Muppets responded marvellously – check out the video on YouTube by searching ‘Muppets Most Wanted – Outrage’. Noah If you’re a fan of epics, this is sure to float your boat (hohoho). Truly a story of biblical proportions, Noah follows the story of a man who built an ark to save all of the animals of the land when a great flood comes. Aside from stellar acting from Russell Crowe and Emma Watson, the direction from Darren Aronofsky – he of Black Swan fame – is sure to be nothing short of magnificent. We’re particularly excited about the special effects. However, Bible fans, take note: thanks to dramatic licence, this may not be exactly like the original story – particularly as the director is an atheist.

Theatre Royal To book: 623568. Hot Mikado (4th-15th March) Hot Mikado takes the classic Gilbert and Sullivan tale and updates it to the 1940s style. Don’t miss this West End and Broadway Olivier Award nominated musical experience from York Light Opera. Young Nanki-Poo, the Mikado’s son masquerading as a Second Trumpet player, arrives in the town of Titipu looking for the beautiful YumYum.

Just a small selection of comments received from our advertisers - Thank you!

Hi Local Link, Being a new business every penny counts. When Miriam called regarding my advertising she recommended for me to go in the Classified pages of Your Local Link. I have had some fantastic response from the magazine which has definitely built up my base of New Customers. Well worth the advertising cost !! 24 Carat Cleaning Hi Gini, Just had to let you know that we at Jorvik lighted dance club are de the with the announcement in latest issue of ‘ Your local red link’ which has been delive today! Thank you

Hi it’s Imogen from the York Ladies Circle We are very interested in re advertising with you as last time it really increased our membership and in turn helped us raise lots of money for Martin House

Hi Mim, Having a limited budget on advertising I was a bit dubious in regards to advertising in Your Local Link but I am so pleased I did, I receive enquiries every single day from the magazine and all are quality leads. It has brought in loads of new business. I would definitely recommend Your Local Link. Re New Kitchens Hello Gini, I would like to say on behalf of Haxby Memorial Hall Fundraising Committee, how very grateful, pleased, chuffed and thrilled we are with everything you have done for our Christmas event. We have never had such support and thank you does not seem enough, but we could never have done this without your help. So thank you once again and see you very soon. Denise

Train to gain

Crunching the numbers

We chat to Matthew Tarn, apprentice at Nestle, about the hows and whys of apprenticeships. What is the apprenticeship like? It's great. It's a four year course and every six months I move around the site into a different department and learn new skills. I'm picking up knowledge and experience all the time, from basic electrical training to industrial wiring, mechanics and fault finding. It's all really useful and will go a long way to helping me in the future.

Who are you and what do you do? My name is Matthew Tarn, I'm 21 and I work as an engineering apprentice at Nestle. I'm currently in my third year of the apprenticeship, meaning I work all across the factory.

Speaking of which, what are you hoping to do at the end of your apprenticeship? I've always wanted to work as an engineer, so I'm aiming for a position in senior management. I'm interested in eventually having a position of great responsibility in the engineering department – and that might not just be in York. With the experience and qualifications I get from this apprenticeship my skills will be in high demand around the world. Who knows?

How did you get in involved in the engineering apprenticeship? I've always been fascinated by how things operate. This developed into an interest in motorbikes and engines which led to doing an engineering diploma at York College. There I heard about the Nestle apprenticeship and it sounded like the sort of thing I wanted to do.

So would you recommend apprenticeships? Absolutely, 100% yes I would. There is no question that if you are looking for a route into work than apprenticeships are a great way to go. What I'm doing now will lead to what I really want to do with my life – and I'll be well paid for it too!

To find out more about the apprenticeship schemes offered by Nestle, visit www.nestlecareers.co.uk

Apprenticeships aren’t all about getting your hands dirty. Alex Hilton speaks about her accounting apprenticeship. For a year Alex studied A Levels at school but did not enjoy the learning experience. Looking for a different option she applied (via www.apprenticeships.org. uk) to study an Intermediate Business Administration apprenticeship. She currently spends four days in the workplace and one day a week studying at College. “I feel my studies make sense now,” says Alex. “My College work is so relevant to what I do at work; College helps work and work helps College. I am so pleased I didn’t continue on the A Level/university route as it was not for me. I find the apprenticeship enjoyable and interesting and I really feel that I have found something I am good at. In the future I would like to study a higher level professional course in Management or Accountancy.”

Will you make a Co-Motion? Everybody’s opinions are valid, but did you know that you could be paid to give yours? If you are a resident of York and over the age of 55, the University of York would love to hear from you – particularly if you experienced a change of circumstances in 2013. Researchers at the University of York are carrying out a three year study, called Co-Motion, on how changes to local neighbourhoods, transport or facilities may maintain or improve individuals’ mobility and well-being as they get older. They would especially be interested in hearing from people who have experienced something such recently stopped working, stopped driving, become a grandparent, started to use a mobility scooter, or who have experienced major eyesight problems. If you volunteer you will be helping the academics from the University’s Centre for Housing Policy to gather evidence and give suggestions on what improvements can be put to city planners and policy makers. Apart from lending you their ears, the researchers will also give you a £50 shopping voucher at the beginning and end of the project as a thank you for your participation. If you would like to be involved email co-motion@york.ac.uk or call 321486.
