Happy July! In last month’s intro we mentioned our team was ever-growing due to the fact that so many of us were expecting. The good news is that since we last chatted two of the expected have made a happy appearance and are busily getting on with baby stuff (sleeping, drinking milk, pooping etc.). Designer Dave’s daughter Eliza Mae arrived in good time, and we also welcomed Sales Exec Craig’s new little girl Lydia Rose. Both sprogs have already been put to work here in the Your Local Link office (and to be honest, Eliza’s advert designs are much better than her dad’s).
Thai the knot In other news, Distribution Manager Gary might soon be added to the list of staff awaiting a bundle of joy, as he recently tied the knot. And after he’d finished with his shoe laces, Gary got married. All went well for the happy couple on the day of the ceremony in York, just before they jetted off for a honeymoon in Thailand. Unfortunately Gary’s dreams of a relaxing time in the company of his new wife (and Thailand’s famous ladyboys) was somewhat put asunder when the Thai
military declared martial law. Obviously Gary tried to calm things down by showing the soldiers how best to distribute leaflets, but downtown Bangkok is bit different to York and he got them hopelessly lost. Luckily he made it back in one piece, as evidenced by the shiny new mag in your hands! Have a great month!

We’re looking at York in a new light after chatting to Hazel Colquhoun, Artistic Director of York Curiouser.

York Curiouser has also got some pretty big backers who are keen to get you all out and searching for these hidden gems. Arts Council England, City of York Council, York University, York St John University, and the National Centre for Early Music are all funding the project, as well as local groups and societies such as the Friends of York Walls and the River Foss Society, are all contributing. "It has come about through brilliant help from our funders and other partners," continues Hazel. "We've got nine artists working across a range of sites in all sorts of media, including sound, film, textiles, ceramics and even weeds! People should expect to be intrigued, delighted and made to think."
If you thought art galleries were the only place to see engaging and fascinating works of art, York Curiouser may soon change your mind. Together with curator Lara Goodband, Hazel Colquhoun has instigated a series of public artworks across York... it's just you might have to do a bit of exploring to find them. Hazel explains: "York Curiouser will bring contemporary art into the heart of York with a series of temporary artworks by different artists, in special places around the city. All of it is in public,

free to view places, but they're all a bit off the beaten track. We want to encourage people to explore the less well known parts of York with this project.” Art of the city "Both Lara and myself wanted to see more contemporary art in the city, and to bring new work to a place that's more associated with tradition and history. We also wanted to put artworks in unusual and hidden places, to get people to really experience the medieval street
Nicely installed So what can we all expect from the art installations? "Our fantastic poet John Wedgwood Clarke has written a suite of poems about the snickets, yards and alleyways and you can find them in the places that they are written about. Check out walls, pavements, notice boards, and blackboards. There are also two installations in towers on the City Walls; Janet Hodgson has made an amazing film and sound installation for Fishergate Postern Tower, and Heinrich and Palmer are creating a mysterious landscape inside Red Tower.

"We are also working with some of the medieval halls in the city; Susanne Davies is making a beautiful installation in the grounds of the Merchant Adventurer's Hall, while Sally Greaves-Lord is creating a brilliant textile work at St Anthony's Gardens near the Quilt Museum." Artist Damian Murphy will be creating a mesmerising sound work at Kings Manor using the poems of John Wedgwood Clarke, and Jacques Nimki is creating a secret artwork in the grounds of the National Centre for Early Music. And if you thought only places on dry land were being utilised, Matt Hawthorne will be making a very special piece of art on the River Foss.

This month’s column is a bit contentious. And when I say a bit contentious, I’m actually wondering if I’d get a more positive response if I just posted a photo of me clubbing a baby seal and had done with it.
Because I want to talk to you about cyclists. As you probably know (and if you don’t, where have you been for the past year? In a cave?) this month sees Le Grand Depart. Even without all the yellow bunting and bike-related razzmatazz, the fact is we live in a city

that’s obsessed with cycles. A friend who works as a cycling instructor in London came to visit recently and actually thought she was in cycle Nirvana. There were cycle paths everywhere, cyclists were given priority at traffic lights, and no one was actively trying to kill them. It was almost too good to be true. Anyway, as far as I can tell, York seems to go out of its way to be nice to cyclists. And why not? They deserve to be treated with respect,
just like any one else. But here’s the thing. And I’ll whisper it, because this is where it gets a bit contentious. Cyclists aren’t always that nice to the rest of us. There, I’ve said it. And as the cycling population of York takes their iPads out of their bike panniers to tell me why I’m wrong, I’ll explain my reasons. On the one hand, you get cyclists
insisting they should be treated like cars. They want to be given sufficient space on the road, and they don’t want cars cutting them up as if they’re invisible. Fair enough. Except then they decide the same rules don’t apply to them. They weave in and out of other vehicles, ignore red traffic lights, cut straight across cars with no indication and then mount the pavement and drive down the footpath. The last time I saw a car do that was when I was failing my fifth
driving test. But at least cyclists have a wary respect for vehicles. They have no respect at all for those of us at the bottom of the transport food chain – pedestrians. When I walk to the gym, I have to cross a fairly busy bridge. As well as there being a big road of the kind that cyclists insist they have every right to use, there is also a footpath which they can share with us pedestrians. And just to make sure we’re not mown down on a regular basis, there’s a sign at either end of the bridge telling cyclists to dismount. Except they don’t. What they do is cycle up behind pedestrians and ring their bell repeatedly and angrily. Quite what we’re expected to do when we hear this sound I don’t know. Presumably step off the kerb into the road they have decided not to use, I suppose. I know most cyclists are law-abiding non road and pavement hogging people. But unfortunately, it’s the bad ones who get noticed. But this month I’ll be out there on the streets, waving my yellow flag with the rest of York. Because if there’s anything I’d like to see certain cyclists do, it’s depart.

Being early for flights. According to maths professor, Jordan Ellenberg, checking in three hours early for a flight is a waste of time. He reckons we should all cut it fine. Personally, I don’t think time spent trying on sunglasses and duty free makeup is ever wasted. It’s the five hours spent strapped into a seat eating cardboard food I could do without.
Not ‘Humble’ bragging. ‘OMG I can’t believe I put my Prada jumper in the wash!’ Please. We all know what you’re really saying, and it’s not that you can’t read a washing instruction label. Or how about this that popped up on Twitter recently: ‘I just stepped in gum. Seriously, who spits gum on the carpet in Club Class?’ If you want to show off, go ahead. But don’t think you’re fooling us for a minute.

tri, tri again... It’s one thing training for a fun run, but triathletes face an incredible challenge, with participants having to display prowess in running, swimming and cycling. If you’re up for it, you’ll likely need some assistance – and luckily for you, there are two excellent local triathlon training clubs looking for new members! The 200 participants at York Triathlon Club range in age from 18-70, and the volunteers who run the group cater for a range of ability levels, from first-timers to wannabe Team GB members. The team of British Triathlon Coaches are available to help and advise, and there are also social events to enjoy. Meanwhile, the Yorkshire Vikings Triathlon and Swim Squad is a new group that was launched in February, with swim sessions at Barlby High School on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and a junior session at The Mount soon to start at weekends. Join us as we journey back in time. No pushing. This month: york workhouse
As you make your way along Huntington Road you may have noticed a large imposing building facing the Rover Foss. Now accommodation for students of York St John University, and referred to as The Grange, the grand Victorian structure was once the last place that York residents wanted to find themselves - a workhouse. We take a look a look at the history of this fascinating site. Refuge or prison? The York Workhouse was built in 1849 to replace the smaller and inadequate premises on Marygate. The Workhouse, like others throughout England and Wales, was intended to be a place to house those who were unable to support themselves and, if the inmate was able, use him or her as free labour on menial tasks. It was designed to accommodate 300 "paupers", but

over time this number increased greatly. Men and woman inmates were kept completely apart, with each group having their own dormitories and yards. The Workhouse was also used to house those with mental health problems and physical disabilities, and as Captain Tucker's map of York from 1852 shows, the various yards were designated with charming titles such as "Male Idiots",

"Female Lunatics", and "Unmarried Women." Good old Victorian political correctness, eh?
Life was made intentionally harsh for the inmates to dissuade others from getting themselves into a situation where they required help from the state. As the work was so demanding, and the fact that many of the inmates were already sick and malnourished, mortality rates were high, warranting the sites own mortuary.
By the end of the nineteenth century York Workhouse had expanded with a new range of hospital wards to the west (now all demolished and replaced with student flats), a small chapel to the east, and new rooms for education. This is where the idea of the Workhouse became something or a paradox, as free education was given to the many children inmates, while those living independently outside in the city received no such teaching. Apart from the daily classes where the children learnt to read and write, there were also opportunities to learn craft skills in the institution's workshops. By 1900 York Workhouse possessed a coach house, a carpenter's shop and even a school of industry. Ironically for many, especially younger children, being a Workhouse inmate could be beneficial.
From work to care As the twentieth century churned on the role of the Workhouse changed to offer more care to older or disabled people. However, the local Government Board noted that staffing was far too inadequate, with only 12 nurses caring for more than 400 inmates and patients. With improvements made across the site, and after being taken over by the newly-formed NHS in 1948, York Workhouse was officially renamed The Grange Hospital.
From 1955, and after another name change to St Mary's Hospital, the facilities were further improved and the whole site was modernised, complete with some private rooms and curtained cubicles. The hospital continued providing care to York citizens until 1979 when it closed.

Party time In the 1990s the site was acquired by York St John University and transformed into dozens of student flats. The site of the old infirmary, workshops and mortuary were cleared to make way for new accommodation, while the original Victorian Workhouse was completely renovated - while still retaining the name St. Mary's. Fortunately these days the lawns and car parks around The Grange are used more for student parties and hi-jinks than gender-divided back-breaking labour. See, it's always better these days.

Here’s what you should do, Gillian. Get a grip. Whose special day is this? Is it yours? No. Is it the special day of a young couple who couldn’t care less where you sit and never want to hear another word about it? Yes. The end. Of course you have every right to be annoyed but like every other wedding guest in the world who’s ever been snubbed, sidelined or made to sit on the children’s table, you just need to suck it up. My advice is to stop talking about it, go to the wedding looking as fabulous as you can, and make that also rans table the place to be. And another piece of advice – don’t refer to them as also rans if you want to make friends.

h FACEBOOK FRENZY How can I stop myself getting stressed out over my ex? We split up a few months ago and I’m trying to get over him, but I can’t stop myself looking at his Facebook page to see what he’s been up to. If I see a picture of him with another girl or out in town, I just freak out. Help! JK, Acomb. It’s irritating when exes don’t disappear, isn’t it? In an ideal world, they would enter a monastary, join a Witness Protection Scheme or at least move to Kettering (and before I get any more complaints – I like Kettering, ok?). Going cold turkey isn’t easy, but believe me, it’s a lot less painful than watching him getting over you with someone else.

Bicycle race Two years on from the cynical tweets such as “I can imagine the support messages painted on the road.’Vive la 'Uddersfield” and “Tha should get thaself a bloody moped lad” the wait is finally over, as the Tour de France comes to Yorkshire. With over 3.5 billion watching worldwide and 15 million spectators set to watch along the route, 6th July will see the peloton ride from York to Sheffield. It’s a shame we are unlikely to see Bradley Wiggins up close as he has been left out by Team Sky, and there is more chance of people caring about the football World Cup’s 3rd/4th place play-off match than Lance Armstrong making an appearance, but current champion, and apparent Brit, Chris Froome will be cycling through.

Onto football now, and while the World Cup is edging close to the final on 13th July, club action gets back up and running in the form of pre-season. York City have appetising friendlies in place against the likes of Sheffield Wednesday (12th July), Hull City (23rd July) and Nottingham Forest (30th July). Nigel Worthington will be hoping to build on his first full season in charge that resulted in a play-off semi-final place. At the time of writing he has already been pretty busy with a number of new players signing on the dotted line at Bootham Crescent. Defender Marvin McCoy hopes to be the real thing after joining from Wycombe Wanderers along with Femi Ilesanmi (Dagenham), Jake Hyde (Barnet) and all 6ft 9inch of Jason Mooney (Tranmere).
July is definitely the time that cricket gets into full swing, and how typical the one game I managed to get to recently (the recent County Championship clash with Lancashire) was washed out. A dry run down the A64, and to the ticket office, only for the first rain drop on the pitch to coincide with the exact time my backside touched down on a Headingley seat. A £3.50 rain soaked bacon roll and three hours later and I was doing the reverse journey, then I learnt the next day that they eventually played some cricket after I left.
Elsewhere, other clubs have started to change things around too. When I saw the headline 'Delia takes over at Celtic' I thought maybe they were testing the theory that the SPL is the most uncompetitive league in the world by putting a celebrity chef in charge of Scotland’s best club to see if they could still win the league, before reading that it was in fact the name of a Norwegian coach. It’s not the worst theory in the world, I wouldn’t argue with Gordon Ramsay.
Luckily I could watch the next Roses clash, the T20 Blast fixture, at Old Trafford in the comfort of my own living room as it was televised, though I think one of Aaron Finch’s shots nearly made it to my house such was the force in which he smashed the ball. Finch got rumbled on a magnificent 88 which made Lancashire believe victory was secure, only for Yorkshire to dig in and get over the line. I loved the way David ‘Bumble’ Lloyd mentioned that Richard Pyrah doesn’t get many boundaries, then preceded to watch that very player smash a six for victory.
Basket case Netball – a sport we don't hear very much about unless you actually play in a league or are taught it in school. Beatrice Wright of Rufforth Netball Club says that the people who shun the sport don't realise what a quick, fast paced and exciting game it is. “Primary schools now encourage boys to play along with the girls, making it a fantastic mixed sport,” says Beatrice. “However, you don't hear of many male teams in the press. Or even female teams, for that matter”.

Rufforth Netball Club are always looking for new players and really encourage newcomers to join in with their summer training in preparation for the winter matches, as well as the social and fundraising events. Major props are certainly due to local cycling group York Greenway Champions, after they used some clever business sense to raise money for an interplanetary cause. The group, who are dedicated to getting people on their bikes as much as possible, have been using the crowd funding website Start Some Good to raise cash for their Tour le Solar System event, running in tandem with the celebrations of the Tour de France. New Park & Ride introduces electric buses to York

After years of planning and development, and £22.7 million spent, the new Park & Ride site at Poppleton Bar is open to the public. The site, just beyond the A59 roundabout, will provide parking for 600 cars and offer a bus service that runs every ten minutes. This will of course help with traffic along the often jammed A59 into the city and centre, and along with the newly enlarged park & ride site at Askham bar (which now offers 1100 parking spaces), should help tackle congestion in York. Most news worthy about the new transport investment are the electric buses that will be operating along the Park & Ride routes. Local company Optare have created the buses, which apart from being almost completely silent, give off no emissions and cost much less to run than convention petrol and diesel buses. Coolest Dad ever After Steven Clarke received the one phone call a father never wants to get, the news that his 17 year old son had been in a car crash, he was distraught. Fortunately his son, Nathaniel, wasn’t seriously hurt in the accident, but his brand new car, paid for my his dad, was a wreck. And so, to ensure that Nathaniel, who had only just passed his driving test, learnt his lesson, Steve took out an advert in the local press, complete

with picture of upturned car. The ad, which all of Nathaniel’s friends saw, stated “Due to son thinking he’s Colin McRae, I now have a 2000 Honda Civic 1.4 breaking for spares. Seems a 1.4 was too much for him to handle. He talked the talk, but certainly didn’t walk the walk (he will be walking now, for a long time).” Obviously Nathaniel was more than embarrassed and has vowed to never worry his parents like that again.

That is certainly believable after Steve Tarrant, a 53 year old disabled man from Poole, drove one flat out for 24 hours at Goodwood race track. Stopping only for quick battery changes, Steve managed to complete a whopping 190 miles on the scooter, smashing the previous record (yes, there actually was one) of 170 miles. Go Steve! So give your Gran's ride a bit more respect next time, yeah?

Little black box If you thought that black boxes, those hard-as-nails-boxes that record everything that happens, were only to be found in aircraft, think again. During the next decade you could have to have one installed in your car, or face higher insurance premiums. Using telematics, the proposed black boxes would record everything you do in your car, noting the amount you drive, distance, speed, how you brake and even how many times you go to the McDonald’s Drive Through (maybe). It’s too easy to covet what you don’t have, but if you’re up for making the most of what you do, I’ve got a few ideas to inspire you. Growing your own with little or no outdoor space? It can be done! Unfortunately, this next item is just a concept, but what a great idea. The Cocoon fruit basket & planter is not just a pretty looking thing, but works cleverly too. With herbs planted in the top, any moisture in the soil can be absorbed by the ceramic container, which then cools the lower compartment down when it evaporates helping the fruit stay fresh for longer. Are you “well hung”? Technology expert Matt Todd gives us the lowdown on (literally) what’s hot. I was amused this month by an industry colleague of mine who was explaining how he was causing a stir in his local town with some new staff uniform. Nothing too risqué in the clothing itself but the slogan across the shoulders of the shirts given to his TV fitters read “WELL HUNG?” which was causing a few raised eyebrows and blood pressures. The amusing statement got me thinking about wall mounted TV’s and how to get the perfect result yourselves. The benefits of wall hanging a TV are multiple; you can put it at the perfect viewing height, the TV is less obtrusive when switched off and all the cables can be hidden away from sight. But how do you achieve the perfect look? Here’s three simple steps: First, get a bracket that suits the size and make of your telly and has the range of motion you need for you wall position.

Brackets come in three different types; flat to the wall (like a picture would be hung), with a tilt option (forward and back), or finally with full motion that will adjust by tilting and panning (left and right). The final style will particularly suit a corner installation. Second, don’t hang it too high! Too many people get seduced by the Hollywood home with a TV over the fireplace. That’s fine if you have a large room but for most of us that will lead to a cricked neck. You should aim
to have your eyeline level with the top 1/3 of the screen when you are in your favoured seating position. Third, take the time to do something with those loose cables. As the summer sun beats down your thoughts might not currently be leaning toward insulation and fuel costs. However, getting innovative building projects completed to help when the weather turns in the next few months was just what one clever family in Copmanthorpe did – and the results are spectacular. M.A.C. Architects were commissioned to design a new extension to an existing house for a family in the village just south of

York, with the brief being to create a bespoke contemporary space with sleek and crisp detailing. The plan was to open up the ground floor of the house to the garden areas, and provide an open plan kitchen and family space that brings the outside in. Sun seeking The plans show a massive degree of change to the rear of the property, with a large amount of south-facing glazing installed. The intention with this was not only to allow natural light
to flow into the downstairs of the house, but is also part of the passive solar heating system that is integral to the success of this project. It may not be as noticeable in July, but as energy bills continue to be more expensive, sustainability was the key factor in the detailed design of this project. M.A.C Architects therefore ensured the extension came complete with high performing thermal walls, floor and roof construction. The intention is to use
the south-facing rear of the house to soak up as much sunlight as possible – all throughout the year. In the details The extension itself is actually constructed from timber frame technology as this contributes to the building’s intended thermal efficiency. As well as being far more effective than the traditional brick and mortar construction methods, it is also a lot cheaper and sustainable. The large canopy over the glazed doors not

only provides an amazing outdoor space for when the rain is pouring down but also protects the open-plan living space from over-heating in the summer.

Environmentally friendly Helping to preserve the environment doesn't have to be a thankless task. Thankfully there is the likes of St Nick's Environment Centre in York, whose dedicated team of volunteers are ready to get to work while having fun... and they hope you'll join them. On 5th July the nature reserve is holding an EcoActive Day from 10am-2pm, in which anyone can turn up and help with a conservation task. Tasks vary from path maintenance to planting, balsam bashing, pruning, scything or anything else needed on the day. In return you'll get a free lunch, drink copious amounts of tea, make some new like-minded friends, and get a warm and
gooey feeling inside for doing all that good. Also at the centre on 16th July is a special workshop entitled Scything for Improvers; it's a really healthy (and let's face it, awesome) way to cut the grass. Don't forget that St Nick's are also continuing to host the weekly Eco Crafter's Club every Wednesday at 1pm. Conrad from Bradshaws Direct offers tips and advice on how to look after your pond and fish. Finally summer seems to have arrived! With water temperatures rising there are a few things we pond keepers need to consider. First off is the health of your fish. The warmer the weather the less oxygen pond water can hold. This is made worse if there’s a thunderstorm. Sometimes we see fish gathering round the bottom of a waterfall or fountain and literally ‘gasping’ at the surface. Ultimately this can lead to fish deaths so it’s wise to do something to improve oxygen levels. Firstly, if you have a pump or fountain turn it on and don’t turn it off at night. Oxygen levels are usually at their lowest just before dawn as plants will use the oxygen up overnight. The more splashing your pump or fountain creates the more oxygen it adds to the water. It might help to add a waterfall or change your fountain type for a more energetic one. An air pump is the perfect solution. You can buy one mains or even solar
powered ones that make installation simple. The pump sits by your pond and a narrow hose goes into the water with a weighted air stone on the end. Air is pumped through the stone and it bubbles up through the water adding oxygen as it breaks the surface. Remember to keep your air pump on overnight when it is hot. The other things that happen when the sun shines is ponds go green and blanket weed goes crazy. You can remove the weed with a net or by twirling a cane in the water and then throw it on the compost heap. But it’s far easier to get a treatment to reduce its growth. Easy dose sachets are now available that make it simple. Just throw one in your pond each week over the summer. Green water can be fixed completely and permanently with a filter using ultraviolet light and you can get one for even the smallest ponds. Alternatively you can use a treatment to keep on top of it. Can you recommend some perennials with purple, bronze, or red foliage as I have a lot of green and yellow plants in my garden.
When used selectively in garden plantings, perennials with usual deep purple, bronze or red foliage can provide a striking backdrop and contrast amongst plants with lighter green and yellow leaves. In some perennials, like Actaea Simplex “Brunette”, the colour is longlasting or even permanent, while in others it is mainly a spring display created by newly emerging foliage and stems. Sometimes the rich leaf colour is also attractively overlaid by a lovely pale bloom. There are several Heucheras that have bronze foliage, including Rachel, Pewter Vail, Obsidian, Frosted Violet, Stormy Seas, and Purple

I have a ring of mushrooms growing on my lawn. What causes this to happen and how can I prevent it from spreading? These rings are commonly known as Fairy Rings and are very common on lawns and area of rough grass and are a cause of concern. Frequently, they occur in more of less circular rings of which there are three main types; those which have no noticeable effect on the growth of the grass, those with which the growth is enhanced, and those with which the growth of the grass is reduced. In Britain the commonest of the damaging types is the Fairy Ring Mushroom, Marasmius Oreades. This produces a dry buff cap, at first bell shaped, but later flatter and up to five centimetres in diameter, sometimes with a wavy margin. The gills are thick, widely spaced, at first white but later turn buff. The stalk is slender and tough and the flesh is off-white.
Palace. Rodgersia is also a very good perennial in front; bronze-red when young, the large clumps of long stalked, deeply divided and lobed leaves colour red again in autumn. Here are some other plants that have rich colour
foliage: Phormium “Joker”, Pennisetum “Fireworks”, Imperata “Red Baron”, Ophiopogom Nigrescens, Lysimachia “Firecracker”, Euphorbia “Purpurea” and also Sedum “Matrona”. Happy planting!
The damage arises because mycelium on the inside of the ring exhaust the nutrients in the soil which deprives the grass roots of moisture. The rate of radial growth of the rings can vary, but can be 30cm or more per year. It is sometimes suggested that Fairy Rings can be treated by excavating and removing the effected soil, but this is largely fallacy, for the fungal mycelium is present extensively within the soil and cannot be eradicated. If the grass growth is effected severely, then the area should be thoroughly spiked to improve the aeration and additional fertiliser should be given. Removing the toadstools is unlikely to have much effect on the likelihood of more rings appearing.

Walk on the wild side The botanical boffins at Dean’s Garden Centre give us the low-down.
With evermore open spaces being lost to developments of one sort or another, along with the documented decline of butterflies and wildlife species in general, we the gardeners should step in to help. Even if you only have limited space, there are lots of ways in which you can encourage wildlife to your garden. Obviously we find all flowers attractive; however, from the butterfly’s point of view some are more beneficial than others. The one plant we all know of course, the ‘Butterfly Bush’, is Buddleia davidii, a tall flowering deciduous shrub with honey scented cone shaped spikes. More well known favourites for butterflies are Lilac, Syringa vulgaris; again a sweetly scented, large flowering shrub. Hebe is a genus of plants with lots of different varieties to choose from, also Lavender, both English and French types can be seen laden with bees and butterflies when in flower. Wild gardens A lot of flowers that would come under the bracket of ‘cottage garden’ plants are perfect for attracting nectar loving insects. Other favourites of the butterfly are Violets, Antirrhinums, Asters, and Sedum varieties. When these are planted in warm sunny
sites the scents will be heightened. An ideal way of attracting things into your garden is by giving them the habitat that they require. For some wild life that means exactly what it says, your garden should be wild. Piles of old logs and branches make perfect hide outs for all sorts of creatures, although some of them won’t be beneficial to all your plants, they will be a good meal for somebody else, for example birds will eat slugs and snails. As well as providing food for wildlife you could try and encourage them to stay by providing both shelter and roosting sites. Corylus avellana ‘Contorta’ (Twisted Hazel), is a perfect plant for small birds. The tangle of branches allows small birds to dart inside for cover from larger predatory birds, or cats, whilst providing a food source when covered in catkins.
Box clever We all know many retail outlets that sell feeders and nesting boxes for birds, but were you aware that you can now get all sort of habitats for insects as well? Butterfly habitat feeders provide a small shelter along with a brightly coloured sponge that you can charge with either sugar water or specially formulated butterfly attractant. There are also insect boxes made up of Bamboo canes clumped together, providing lots of small holes to hide in. Having a pond in your garden also attracts wildlife, whether it is a grand pool full of fish or little more than a constant puddle to keep the frogs happy. Frog and toad houses are available to give them some extra protection. Frogs are another creature that will eat slugs and snails and are well worth encouraging. Having a selection of pond plants will encourage many more aquatic species. Some oxygenators that stay in the water, some marginals that can live in shallow water at the pond edge, and also some deep-water plants that can grow from the bottom. As you can see there are lots of ways that you can help out nature and also make your garden that little bit more exciting.

Growing your own fruit and veg is rewarding, good for the planet – and your pocket. Here’s how…
Sow, sow and sow again. . fennel, turnip and radish. It is an essential method when growing salad crops and annual herbs if you want a constant supply throughout the summer. Salad rocket (usually sold as rocola) can be grown throughout the summer and germinates quickly to produce useable leaves in a few weeks and has a wonderful peppery flavour.
As crops reach maturity and the summer harvest begins, vacant areas of soil will start to appear on the plot. It’s easy at this stage in the season to lose the momentum for sowing and planting that is found in spring, but there is still time to extend the season of fast growing vegetables by sowing a second crop. French beans sown now will crop from late August till the first frost and if you have left over seed you have little to lose! They may not crop as heavy as earlier sowings, but will extend the season into autumn and with a bit of luck provide some home grown chutney and pickling ingredients. Succession planting is where a number of smaller sowings and plantings are done at timed intervals rather than all at once early in the season. Harvest is then spread over a period of time so you avoid the problem of having to deal with a glut. Succession sowing works with peas, spring onions, carrots, beetroot, Florence

Now is an ideal time to sow some oriental greens like Mizuna, Osaka purple, or Green in snow to add spice and colour to summer salads. Pak Choi can be left to mature and stir fried for a quick vegetable accompaniment. Oriental greens are easy to grow provided they have plenty of moisture as they will bolt in dry conditions. Sown later in the season they are less likely to suffer from flea beetle damage, which is identified by tiny holes in the leaves. Oriental greens are in the cabbage family, which should be considered in the crop rotation. Sow spring cabbage from late July to late August. It makes a great follow on crop from early potatoes and can be sown direct into your main vegetable plot after the potatoes have been lifted. Sow seed thinly into prepared drills 35cm (14in) apart and then thin out seedlings to the required spacing, 30-38cm (12-15in) for hearted spring cabbage or 10cm (4in) for spring greens.

How can I help my cat lose weight? Pet Obesity is something that we are seeing more of in practice. One in three pets are now classed as overweight or obese. There are lots of things to consider before you start your cat on a diet, as management of your cat's diet at home can be more difficult than you might think. Firstly I would recommend that you make an appointment to see a vet as some conditions can cause obesity and some conditions can be brought on by obesity, such as diabetes mellitus, arthritis, urinary stones or heart disease.

Is your cat an indoor or outdoor cat? If your cat has access outdoors then there could be a possibility that they are getting food from elsewhere. Unfortunately cats are scavengers and people do tend to leave food out for strays and hedgehogs. Once your cat has had a medical all-clear from your vet I would advise you to make an appointment with a nurse to discuss what food would be best and also what other things you can do in get your cat more active.
I would advise that you use a specific veterinary prescribed food as restricting the amount of normal cat food can restrict the amount of nutrients that your cat will receive, and a too rapid weight loss can cause medical problems.
Feed the birds
… but be mindful of what you give them! As the dietary requirements of the birds in our garden change during the summer, it is important to put the right food out – or you could end up doing more harm than good. The RSPB points out that birds need more protein in the summer, so black sunflower seeds, pinhead oatmeal, soaked sultanas, raisins and currants, mild grated cheese, mealworms, and waxworms are all recommended. Avoid using bread and fatty things, and if you do put out peanuts, make sure they are chopped up very finely as peanuts can be a choking hazard for chicks.

Howard Mosley-Chalk is a father and husband. But more importantly he is a man. As a boy he assumed that by now he would have at least one bionic limb, but at 32 he finds himself writing for Your Local Link. These are his (un)manly words.
Sibling non-rivalry Lately the warmer weather has encouraged the Mosley-Chalk clan out into the garden more. Because of this it has been really quite interesting to witness the growing relationship between our children; a relationship that is probably far more complex than the one each of them has with my wife and me.
Well, either an office, or a prison, as I’m certain she’s make a very imposing prison governor. When these worlds collide, and the staggering, mudencrusted boy invades the neat Orwellian order of the girl, surprisingly there isn’t an outbreak of World War Three (or Four, depending on when you read this).
Our daughter has had a little brother for well over a year now, and as she’s just three and a half herself, I wonder if she can even a remember anything from before that. It very much seems that being the older child is no longer a novelty to her. As she is, and has always been, very particular about who and what she has around her, you would think that a stumbling, bumbling 13 month old boy would be the last thing she was interested in. But being a big sister really seems to come naturally to her.

Meanwhile our daughter’s natural habitat would probably be an office, with everything neatly filed and ordered, and with her own staff to boss about.

...and another thing Always read the label Speaking of my toddler son painting everything but what he was supposed to, I’m pretty sure I know where he gets it from. As we’ve been preparing the garden for the summer, my wife - that crafty Scot who deftly uses a sewing machine like the rest of us use our fingers - has been painting. Some may remember one of my first columns in which I described my wife hastily slopping paint onto the walls of our new house, even before the boxes were unpacked. This month she has been painting the garden furniture... with indoor white wall emulsion. The first time it rained it looked like a fully-stocked milk float had been dropped onto the garden from a great height. It wasn’t much of a problem to wash away, it’s just I really wanted to share that with the whole of York. Tee hee.

Imagine that! Say boo to a goose. As previously stated in these pages, I’m a cyclist now. Doing something more physical that typing was strange at first, but now I’ve caught the bug and actually enjoy exercise (shock, horror!). One thing I’ve noticed while cycling around our fair city, is not how many wellmaintained cycling paths there are, or how beautiful the sky is during the sunrise, but how much damn goose poo there is laying around certain areas. Seriously, if you’re biking it around York uni campus, or along either of the rivers, prepare to give your tyres a wipe down before returning home. Childminders Childminders are often selfemployed, Ofsted-certified individuals who work from their own homes. As the number of children a childminder can care for at any one time is limited to six under eight

years of age, this might be a good choice for kids who like smaller groups and homely settings. Also, childminders can work at irregular hours, so if your job is outside of the standard 9am-5pm this could be the option for you.
Day Nurseries
Playgroups
Day Nurseries are a popular choice as they tend to offer all-day care for the children of people who work standard hours. As the nurseries are usually very well staffed, there are lots of children of mixed age groups. Just like a childminder, Day Nursery staff are Ofsted checked and often include paediatric nurses. However, the cost of a full week in a Day Nursery can be expensive, so it is always worth finding out how these costs could be reduced.
Often organised by community volunteers and other parents, these groups place emphasis on play and social interaction, allowing your child to get hands-on with different toys and activities. They can run for just a few hours during term time and can be great as irregular childcare.
Nursery Schools These offer full or half day care for children aged from three to five. Many are state-run, which means they will be free, but private Nursery Schools will often charge per term. Find out by speaking to the school you're interested in.
Before and after School Clubs These clubs, which are often run by schools themselves, offer a chance for children, aged from three to 14, to catch up with homework and play together. Many are dedicated Breakfast Clubs, which include a healthy breakfast to help set your child up for the day, wherever that may be.
Nannies and au-pairs If you are particularly looking for oneon-one care in your own home, then a nanny or an au-pair might be the right choice. This can be great for the child as they get a lot of attention and build a strong bond with their carer, but obviously prices can be very high.

Care-free If you are concerned about the cost of childcare then here is some news that might lessen those worry lines on your forehead. Returning once again, the City of York Council’s free childcare scheme for two year olds urges York parents to check if their child is eligible for up to 15 hours of free childcare a week. Taking place at a playgroup, a day nursery, or with a childminder, from 1st September there will 600 two year olds (and their happy parents) benefitting from the scheme. Eligibility for the free scheme depends entirely upon your circumstances, such as if you earn less than £16,190 a year or receive Working Tax Credits, Child Tax Credit or Income Support. n To find out, call 554444.

‘Cinderella Law’ What is it?
In the Queen’s speech delivered on the 5th June, the queen outlined the introduction of ‘Cinderella law’ which will, for the first time, criminalise the emotional abuse of children. Currently, the law only permits the police to become involved when children are subject to physical abuse and it does not assist children who are suffering emotionally from being humiliated, verbal abused and/or suffering from similar behaviour. The change in the law is in response to a private member’s bill which was drafted last year by the charity ‘Action for Children’. The bill highlighted their campaign for the criminalisation of emotional abuse to children. Sir Tony Hawkhead, the charity’s chief executive stated: “…a monumental and overdue step forward for children and our efforts to protect them from severe emotional abuse. Children who are made to feel worthless, powerless and unloved by their families will now have the law on their side.” The change in the law has been long awaited and it seems the UK is one of the last countries in the
“western world” to introduce the criminalisation of emotional abuse to children. Emotional abuse can affect children, leaving permanent scars and lead to ongoing health problems. This may also reduce the number of suicides in young people. Statistics reported on the NSPCC website state “there has been a 33% increase in young people talking about suicidal thoughts and feelings and for 16 to 18 years olds, suicide was the third most common reason to contact Childline”. When faced with separation, parties need to ensure that any children involved are not subjected to any emotional and/or verbal abuse. I see time and time again parents involving their children in their separation which is unfair on any child involved. I welcome the new changes, but I am disappointed that the changes have not been introduced sooner to protect vulnerable young people. In the event of separation, it is important to put any children involved at the forefront of discussions and decisions to ensure that any disruption to their lives is kept to a minimum. Mediation is a fantastic way
to ensure that this is achieved and allows parties to discuss their separation in a controlled and amicable environment. Legal aid is no longer available for most family matters, however it is available for mediation. Having been featured on BBC Radio York’s Introducing show and on BBC Radio 6 Music, it would appear they have a bright future ahead of them. They recently released their first EP Blood Stained Bill, which has been described as stomping bluesrock fuzz’n’roll. The Basement is a little more intimate than their usual preference of gig venue, so it should make for an interesting watch. I’ll see you at the front.

Heading on the highway After passing my driving test in November last year and finally being let loose on the roads, I’d successfully managed to avoid any form of motorway or dual carriageway until this week. People would ask me why I hadn’t driven to Scarborough yet (apparently a mandatory thing to do once you’ve passed your test), pointing out: “But you can go anywhere you want now Krystal!” The truth is, motorway driving scares me, perhaps due to years of my parents arguing about

which turning to take next, or debates on whether “we’ll even get to go on holiday at this rate.” If it has more than two roads going the same way, it’s trouble in my book – fast moving trouble. Need the loo? Maybe you can go in 12 miles, provided you don’t miss the sign. Despite all this, I put my apprehensions aside and decided to head for Liverpool on the M62. Dad
assured me he had every faith in me, whilst hastily going to find his sat nav and checking over the car. Two new tyres and a few quid out of pocket later, I set off.
Motorway morons To my surprise, people are relatively co-operative on motorways. If you need to get into a lane chances are people will slow down for you, provided you indicate. If someone is holding up the fast lane, they’ll soon realise and cut back into the middle one. I realised that the motorway is a group of people with the same goal: getting places. In order to achieve your goal it helps to help other people too, reap what you sow and all that jazz. Now don’t get me wrong, the M62 wasn’t just full of team players here. There’s always going to be an undercutter. Eighty mph simply isn’t fast enough for this guy; he treats getting home like a game of snake off
the old Nokia3210. It doesn’t matter which lane he’s in; if there’s a gap in another one he’s cunningly dodged through it before you’ve even had chance to blink. Another favourite driver of mine is the non-indicator. Buddy, wouldn’t it be nice if there was a way you could’ve told me you were going to pull out in half a second? What’s that? Your car has indicators? Incredible. Also, the lorry drivers who think they can over take other lorries are fabulous. The complete and utter struggle of a lorry taking half a mile before it’s managed to muster enough power to slowly trundle past its opponent with an equally heavy load is quite a spectacle, but makes me wonder: why bother, eh? Equally, the car that shot past at about 100mph five minutes ago is now trundling along in the slow lane, nowhere near a turning… what made them change their mind?
Remember your mantra All in all, the motorway isn’t such a bad place. It does what it says on the tin. Keep your eyes peeled, and always check your blind spot (that’s the official mantra of the motorway, my dad told me). I’d like to say thanks to Satnav for all her support (I have the lady voice on mine) and the two brave lads that came with me for the journey.

Theatre, we’re currently producing a revisit to our hugely well received production of Miss Julie, as well as planning more pub theatre for the autumn and series of storytelling drama walks for Scampston Hall near Thirsk. What was it like setting up your company in York? I founded it when I knew I was expecting my first child - and it was a nerve-wracking thing to do. I had no idea if anyone would even be interested. But I’ve had tremendous support from both mothers who love the idea, and from venues and Children’s Centres in York. So York support has been wonderful.
Who are you and what do you do? I’m Gemma Sharp and I am a professional actress with over a decade of experience working in theatre, TV and film. I also corun the touring theatre company Hedgepig Theatre with my husband Andy Curry, and I run Hoglets: Theatre fun for little folks. We run weekly storytelling and drama classes for babies, toddlers and their carers. What got you into acting? I remember that from the age of three I told my parents I wanted to

be an actor. As I grew up, there was never anything else that changed my mind from this - it’s what I love and every choice I made since then was pointing me towards becoming a professional actor. Are there lots of opportunities for budding actors in York? There are plenty of opportunities to cut your teeth and develop with excellent community groups, but any actor looking for work needs to spread their wings. I’ve worked across the country - London,
Liverpool, Manchester etc - so location can’t be a restriction. The most exciting thing about York is that it’s a great place to create work. One of the best things an ambitious actor can do is to create the work for themselves, form a company and put on a play. Whatever you do - create your own work. What are you currently working on? My company is everexpanding, with new venues, more classes and different projects coming up. When it comes to Hedgepig

It’s no mystery... ...why the York Mystery Plays keep coming back One of the great theatrical traditions of York, the waggon-carried York Mystery Play Cycle is once again returning to the streets of the city from noon on 13th and 20th July. How did you get involved with the York Mystery Plays? For many years I’ve been a member of the York Guild of Building, and just as it’s been done for hundreds of years, our guild was responsible for contributing to the four-yearly cycle of the plays. I started out as just a wagon-pusher, helping to cart around the props and sets to the various locations that the plays take place, but since 2006 I’ve been very lucky to portray God.

What is it like playing the role of the Almighty? The way I see it is that I’m actually playing the role of a medieval guild merchant who is playing the role of God. I like to imagine that this role has been played by the most pompous and wealthiest of the guild members, just for the prestige. Still, it is a lot of fun.

Have you always been interested in acting? No, not at all. I’ve always been far more interested in the medieval times in which the plays originated, as well as researching family history. In fact, I have discovered that an ancestor of mine was also involved in the Mystery Plays in the 1400s. It was amazing to discover that “Great Uncle Tom” as I call him, would have seen these same plays and spoken the same lines as our company does. It’s great to know that I’m continuing a family tradition - albeit one that was interrupted for 500 years!.
Where can we see you during the cycle of the plays? Right at the start. As you can imagine, playing God means I have quite a bit of a hand in setting things going!

It’s one of the busiest times of year at York College as we begin to look forward to our Adult Learning programmes which start in September. This year we’ve made sure that the most popular courses we offer are all there, as well as some new courses for you to try. People often ask me what you need to be a student at York College, and I usually can only say one thing: enthusiasm. Over the years our students have come from a variety of backgrounds, studied at a variety of levels, and used their studies in a range of different ways. We’ve taught career changers, promotion chasers, business starters and, of course, people who want to learn for fun. We welcome them all, and that’s why
York College is one of the area’s favourite providers of adult education. We take a particular pride in the experience and dedication of our teaching staff and the campus facilities at Sim Balk Lane, but we are most proud of the students who come here, enjoy their studies and achieve their ambitions, no matter how great or small they may be.

Whether you’re a hobbyist or a careerminded professional, the Hair and Beauty team have got something for you. There are no less than 11 programmes, from one-day workshops to full beauty therapy qualifications.

Joining a course… Getting onto your course at York College is easy and there are two different ways to do it, depending on the type of programme you want to study. If you want to do a ‘hobby’-type programme, say an Art School class, a one-day course or a Level 1 programme, you can call the admissions team at the college and sign up over the phone, you’ll need to have your payment details handy. If you’re planning to study a more advanced programme, such as a Level 2 accounting course or a Level 3 Hair and beauty programme, then it’s likely that you’ll need to fill in an application form and return it to the College. Over the summer we hold regular assessment evenings, which give us a chance to meet, talk over the particulars of the course and establish that it’s the right one for you. n n n n To book a place on an assessment evening call 01904 770 400.
In 2013 the government launched its 24+ Advanced Learning Loan scheme to help people aged 24 and over pay for some Level 3 and Level 4 courses. It’s been really popular with our students, with nearly 200 of them using the facility to fund their studies with us , and this year we’re hoping even more people with take advantage of the scheme. Put simply, 24+ Advanced Learning Loans enable eligible students to borrow the cost of certain Level 3 and 4 programmes, and repay the fees only when the course has completed at low monthly repayments, and only if their salary rises above £21,000 per year. The loans are provided by the student loan company on behalf of the government, not high street banks, and there are no credit checks to endure.
