Women join forces to support mums-to-be facing labour without essential hygiene items. A group of businesswomen from York are hoping to raise £2,000 to provide Birth Care Bags for mums-to-be in urgent need across the city. The campaign began after local businesswoman Andrea Morrison discovered through The Hygiene Bank York that as many as ten women a month are going into labour without essentials such as maternity pads, shower gel, toothpaste and disposable pants. Andrea has joined forces with Emily Pickard, Bernadette Render, Sarah Schiewe and Helen Sargent to raise awareness and build a supply of pre-packed bags
for those who need them most. The group hopes to raise enough to create 100 Birth Care Bags, enough to provide a full year's supply at York Hospital. Each bag will contain essentials for mum and baby, including toiletries, sanitary products, nappies and baby care items. To find out more information or to donate, please visit justgiving.com/team/ birthcarebags.

& Hidden Villages HALLOWEEN OCTOBER HALF-TERM to visit in North Yorkshire
If you’re thinking of getting away from it all without straying too far from home, North Yorkshire is packed with charming villages to suit every taste. Whether you’re after a casual day out with the family, a scenic drive in the countryside or a splash-about at the seaside, we’ve narrowed down some of the best villages worth a visit.
Hutton-le-Hole
Gunnerside
Situated within the North York Moors National Park, around seven miles from Pickering, this stunning village is steeped in history. Best recognised by the Hutton Beck moorland stream, Hutton-le-Hole offers local attractions including the Ryedale Folk Museum, which holds regular art exhibitions and is a great place to soak up the heritage of this particular pocket of God’s Own County.
Situated in Swaledale, between Muker and Grinton, Gunnerside is best known for its Grade II listed bridge (which is thought to date from 1892 in its current form) and extensive foot tracks, which are beloved by hikers and ramblers. With strong historic ties to lead mining, Gunnerside remains a certified gem in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
Ravenscar Favoured by fossil hunters due to its rocky coves and dramatic clifftops, Ravenscar is a lesser-known coastal village that’s well worth stopping off at. While it’s often discovered on foot (or by bike) via the Cleveland Way and Cinder Track routes, Ravenscar remains somewhat of a hidden gem, nestled on the coast around 10 miles north of Scarborough.
Staithes While this charming village may be one of the most famous in our list, its endearing mix of cobbled streets, picturesque seaside accommodation, and stark natural beauty ensures that it’s well worth your time if you’re traversing the coast. And, as the busiest active fishing village in the county, it’s the perfect place for seafood lovers!
8
Harome Located just 24 miles northeast of York, Harome is a quaint and beautiful village that remains one of the best untouched examples of its kind in all of North Yorkshire. With just 109 households and a population of 261 circa 2011, Harome is home to a startling number of listed buildings for its small size, including The Hollies, St Saviour’s Church and The Vicarage.
Grassington Best known as the filming location for All Creatures Great and Small, Grassington is a gem of the Yorkshire Dales. Situated in Wharfedale, close to Linton and Hebden, this charming village is a magnet for hikers, cultural explorers and tourists alike, and is famed for its Christmas Markets, shows, and annual 1940s weekend.
Take a look at our pick of family-friendly events and activities taking place this October half-term and Halloween.
DREAMERY GARDENS Enjoy a gentler take on Halloween with seasonal food and drinks from the café, plus a Halloween grotto and storytelling. Visit dreamerygardens.co.uk/ gentle-halloween. HALLOWTWEEN Explore four immersive Halloween attractions, each with its own eerie backstory. There’s also live entertainment throughout the event. Visit www. hallowtween.co.uk. SPILMANS PUMPKINS Spilmans' Pumpkin Festival returns bigger and better than ever. Alongside thousands of
pumpkins, visitors can enjoy Wizford's Academy, The Great Fortune Flop, fancy dress, a disco, pumpkin carving and more. Visit www.spilmans.co.uk. GHOSTS IN THE GARDENS York BID's much-loved Ghosts in the Gardens trail is expected to return this autumn. Visit www. theyorkbid.com/ghosts-in-thegardens/ for the latest updates. CASTLE HOWARD Castle Howard traditionally runs a range of October half-term activities for families. Visit their website nearer the time for details of this year’s events.

WALKING WITH
THE WANDERER
Time: 2+ hours
Distance: 41/2 miles
HUSTHWAITE TO COXWOLD AND BACK ALONG BEACON BANKS This is a short and straightforward circular walk of about 4½ miles. Starting in the unspoilt village of Husthwaite it follows a disused railway line to picture postcard Coxwold. It then returns past Newburgh Priory, and its large lake, before taking a quiet byway to the top of Beacon Banks. From the return route, along the top of the bank, there are fine views north to the White Horse above Kilburn and, in good visibility, south to the distant towers of York Minster. For refreshments, Coxwold has The Fauconberg Arms and a tea room. There are two houses, one where you join the old railway line and another just after Newburgh Priory lake, which offer occasional light refreshments.
1. From Low Street in Husthwaite take the public footpath to the left of the church by Orchard Cottage. Bear left then right and alongside a hedge to a gate, then down a fence lined path to another gate into a large field. Cross the field on the obvious beaten path.
roadside footpath leaving the houses and crossing over a disused railway bridge. Ignore a footpath and lane to the left to pass the lake of Newburgh Priory and then the house entrance, also on the left. Stay on the wide verge on the left side of the road which begins to go gradually uphill.
2. Emerging from the field turn left on the road. Cross a small bridge then turn right down the old railway line footpath opposite the old station house. Continue for over a mile, the path narrowing after a while then passing through two gates where you go straight ahead. Ignoring a path to the left you eventually emerge onto a tarmac road opposite the old Coxwold station.
4. Cross the road before it bends left at a ‘Byway Loop’ sign to follow the signposted tarmac byway on the right, initially with a wall to the right. The byway climbs uphill bending left and then right before passing through a farmyard. Continue beyond the farm for a further couple of hundred yards.
3. Turn left here along the road into Coxwold. At the T junction in the village turn right along the main road (turn left to visit the church and Shandy Hall). Continue on the
5. Near the top of the hill leave the tarmac byway to take an easily missed signed bridleway on the right.
Disclaimer: Walks are undertaken at your own risk. Due care must be taken in following the walk, particularly after poor weather. Whilst every care is taken in compiling the description, changes may have occurred since compilation. Neither the walk author nor Your Local Link can accept any responsibility for errors or omissions.

Follow this, very soon turning left alongside the hedge with Beacon Banks Wood to the right. Continue on the obvious path along the top of the bank with the drop to the right, eventually passing a trig point and fields where alpacas may be grazing to the left. As the bridleway nears Husthwaite you pass buildings and go through a gate onto a drive. 6. When you reach a T-junction with a tarmac road turn left but in 15 yards take the signposted footpath through a kissing gate to the right, at first with a hedge
on the right and then on both sides. In a short distance come to another kissing gate going down the field on the other side with the hedgerow on your right. Go through further kissing gates and bear left down the side of the next field to find a gate in the corner (this area can be muddy!). Follow the narrow path on the other side of the gate to emerge on the road where you turn right. This quickly takes you to Husthwaite green and the starting point by the church.
