SCARECROWS are always re-inventing themselves! And that’s why the touristsand the locals - love scarecrow season in the Mary Valley. But the scary ‘crows are a bit slow to come out of the hills this year. There are reports of a gathering out the back of Kandanga, but organisers are most excited about the possible return of the massive Scrapwood Sally at Imbil. The chance of seeing straw characters, upcycled statues and strange creatures are a great excuse for a day trip through the rolling hills of the Noosa hinterland. There are two new cafes on offer at Imbil, and with country pubs at Kandanga, Imbil and Kenilworth you are sure to find a cold drink.

Scarecrows are always re-inventing

The Mary Valley Scarecrow Festival starts on September 5 and finishes on October 3. A Google map will be uploaded to the website with the locations of scarecrows so you can plan your trip through the valley. The festival began in Maleny and has been held during spring almost every year since the late ’90. It has spawned the seasonal sport of scarecrow spotting, where visitors can plan a day trip from Kenilworth in the south and wander down into the Mary Valley via Broloo, Imbil, Kandanga, Amamoor and Dagun. Organising body Mary Valley Artslink also has a fun fact to share: A collective noun for scarecrows? A “fright” of scarecrows (if you can believe Google). Visit www.maryvalleyartslink.com.au for more details or find the scarecrows on Facebook.

THE sun is coming out and all the team at Poolwerx are excited and ready to help. In the past 9 months, the crew have experienced expansion, devastation, and revamping. Conrad and Michelle have been operating the pool business since 2006. In Dec 2021 they expanded their shop count to three with the takeover of PoolScene Gympie to compliment the 16yrs of working as mobile only in the area. The expansion was smooth and successful, however, 2.5 months after taking over, the Gympie store saw 3m of the Mary River come through. Amid total devastation, they were able to open and trade within the week. The shop still requires a refit completion, nonetheless it’s functioning 100% with great service offered and positive community feedback. The team at Poolwerx is growing, dynamic and geared for a busy season ahead. At the recent Poolwerx National Awards they were proud to see team member Nicky awarded Poolwerx’s ‘New Retailer of the Year’ for Australia and New Zealand. Michelle commented, “As we all enter the swimming season with potentially a La Nina reoccurring, we urge people to be mindful of the importance of looking after their health and their investment. Pool water may appear clean, but it doesn’t mean that it’s healthy and safe for swimming. Contaminants invisible to the naked eye can still be present if your pool chemistry is out of whack. We have the tools and knowledge to relieve the stress around your pool.

Way to wellness

KATRINA THORPE IS PASSIONATE ABOUT WELLNESS. HER LIFE’S WORK HAS BEEN TO MAKE PEOPLE FEEL GOOD ABOUT THEMSELVES, EVEN BEFORE WELLNESS WAS A ‘THING’. WITH HUSBAND NICK, THEY ARE THE COUPLE BEHIND THE NOOSA ICON, IKATAN SPA. By Margie Wegener

It’s been twenty years since ikatan opened in Doonan, and the now established gardens of tropical plants and palms are lush and impressive. We meet on a busy Monday morning at the spa. I’m envious of the couple who arrive to join me in the guest lounge. They look like honeymooners; young and wide-eyed with anticipation. Perhaps they are here for one of those fabulous couples massages. They are about to be wrapped in some luxuriously scented treatment and transported to a state of bliss. What a great way to start the day. They will likely remember this forever, I think to myself. Katrina arrives and greets me with the warmth of someone who might live here. I feel welcome and instantly relaxed like I have just popped over to visit a friend. She is warm and vibrant, energetic and engaged. Clearly passionate about life and ikatan. Dressed casually in black, she looks immaculate and radiates good health. If there is a walking advertisement for wellness at any age, Katrina is it. The Global Wellness Institute (GWI) defines wellness as “the active pursuit of activities, choices and lifestyles that lead to a state of holistic health”. The wellness industry is bursting with activities, choices and lifestyles (the options are endless) promising to help you achieve optimal health, or at least get you on the path to a healthier lifestyle. The GWI currently estimates the health and wellness industry in Australia at $9.5 billion (2021). Yet shifts in how we see wellness occur all the time and our perception of personal wellness changes, depending on age and circumstance. The pandemic has changed how we see wellness for example. One emerging trend named ‘Dirty Wellness’ taps into the so-called Nature Economy promoting down to earth, soulful activities centred around rejuvenation and healing, with a focus on the outdoors and self-care. I ask Katrina her thoughts on this. “I’ve always been into green therapy. Post COVID, people can’t get enough of nature. We are just part of it, really. What I believe is really healing is nature. Sitting out in that garden before or after a treatment, you can feel what you get from nature. It just recharges your batteries.”

Katrina moved here in 1997 and now calls Noosa home. Her family emigrated to Australia from London when she was just seven years old, the eldest of four children. Her father was en route to Tasmania, where as a young surveyor he would oversee the construction of the Hobart hospital. Her English father and Italian mother were ‘10 pound poms’ making their way in 1960’s Australia. Training as a young hairdressing apprentice, Katrina was catapulted into business when her father bought the salon she was working in, and later the attached beauty salon. Young, hard working and passionate, Katrina took every opportunity that came her way. “Once I had finished my hairdressing apprenticeship, I did beauty therapy then I went on to do salon administration. After I had my first baby I was at the gym and the instructor didn’t turn up and they said, ‘well you’re always in the front of the class why don’t you take the class’. I thought, well I like doing this and I wouldn’t have to pay for a gym membership, so then I went to uni and did part of a human movements degree - which is what you had to do to become an aerobics instructor back then. Then personal training became a thing so I studied to be a PT, working part time. I sold the salon and went full time into the fitness industry as director at a boutique (gym) club. At the same time I was offered a job as a hairdressing teacher at night school and I was very involved with hair dressing competitions. Then I moved to Queensland and went, ‘right, I’m a hairdresser, fitness instructor, beauty therapist’ - so then I decided to do a massage course.” Katrina laughs at her list of qualifications and the journey, juggling motherhood all the while. She talks about working as part of a

It’s my favourite thing to do for people. I can put my hands on someone and just understand what is going on with the body. That’s my real passion. So I went on to learn as much massage as I possibly could.” Once Katrina started doing massage courses that led to an interest in Ayurvedic health. “I really love the way Ayurvedic health is not about taking a pill but treating the body as a whole from the outside in.” Katrina was not looking for love when it found her but her partnership with Nick would became the cornerstone of ikatan Spa and together, they have created more than a family. “I already had the vision of the spa and I was going to ask my Dad to help me fund it. After my work in the hotel industry I realised there was an opening for something more boutique service orientated.” “I said, I am going to build this day spa of my own. People come to Noosa because it’s sub tropical and there is not a day spa that is tropical and that’s what they want when they’re on holidays. I am going to open a Balinese day spa.” At the time they met, Nick was working as an aeronautical engineer based in the Middle East, surrounded by desert. He had thoughts of moving back to the coast and pursuing his love of gardening. Inspired by The Spirit House restaurant, Katrina took Nick there to view the gardens and told him, “This is what I want to do”. Katrina envisioned a Balinese version, promoting massage and wellness principals.

“I went to the bathroom and came back and he just said “I’d like to spend the rest of my life with you and how about I back you in the spa instead of your father.” It was a marriage and business proposal rolled into one and it took Katrina by surprise. They agreed to go fifty/fifty in the business and arranged to meet up in Bali to check out tropical spas and the next time Nick came home, they went looking for properties.

“We found this property back in 2001 and it had a house on it. Nick bought it the day before he went back to Saudi Arabia. I got a Feng Shui consultant to come tell us where we should put the actual spa and how it should be. So ikatan was born basically. Nick wanted to do gardens. I wanted a spa and here is the combination of it.”

“I’m just really grateful that I have such a happy soulmate and partner in business. He’s more than just a husband. We’re always on the same page and I feel really blessed for that. How I manifested that I don’t know. It’s really meant to be.” I couldn’t leave without asking Katrina about wellness and ageing. What’s the secret? I want to know. “Exercise. I have always exercised but my exercise has changed, I no longer run but I love to swim and do yoga and walk. So everyday I walk, try to get to yoga 3-4 times a week and I love to swim. I love walking in the forests and changing up my walks. I don’t drink a lot and I eat really healthy and balanced. It’s planning. Making sure I am organised with food. All the things you do for your kids really, do it for yourself. Care for yourself like you do your kids!” Take care of yourself, that’s what I am hearing. Looking at Katrina I’m tempted to book a massage and join the self-care trend this minute! Her journey is an inspiration. Following her passions led her to love and created this tropical paradise, ikatan Spa. “It’s almost as if sometimes you become ‘Jack of all trades but master of none’ and then it all comes together. You bring it all together and it’s like, I was meant to learn all of this, because now I use absolutely everything, even my hairdressing skills. This is where I am meant to be,” she smiles energetically.

Inspired by The Spirit House restaurant, Katrina took Nick there to view the gardens and told him, “This is what I want to do”.

WELL folks, snake season is here again! Comes around very quickly in Qld especially on the south east coast. So what does snake season mean? What do I do? I’ll explain briefly - first off - don’t panic. Snakes aren’t out to chase or kill you. They’re much more interested in finding a mate and having something to eat. We’re also coming into snake breeding season, starting now until the end of spring. So the boy snakes will travel to find a girl. The females start ovulating. Basically they put a smell into the air and the boys follow it to find them. Sometimes multiple boys will meet the female at the same time and fight for the right to mate. The difference between fighting and mating? Fighting will have the combating males out in the open twisted around each other with their heads up, trying to push the other snakes head down. Mating is very different. The male and female will lay down next to each other and their tails (snake bits) will connect. They will be in a secluded spot away from interruptions. The two things are very different. So what do I do? It’s always personal preference and how you feel about it. If you don’t feel comfortable with the snake on your property or if it’s inside, give me a call. I’m always happy to come out and relocate it to a more snake appropriate place. Keep an eye on the snake and remove any kids or pets from the area. If you want to leave it, same rule applies (remove kids and pets) and let it go along it’s merry way. Basics to remember… keep doors and windows shut. Openings like that are a welcome in for snakes! Screens are fine and will keep them out. Apart from that, keep the yard open and exposed to minimise snakes and you’ll be fine. Call me if you need me. Luke

We moved into Cooroy and just loved it. Cooroy reminds me of my home town back in England. Everyone is so friendly and smiling, happy to see you. They remember your name. It’s just a really personal place. It’s a small country town, but there is more going on. It’s got everything you need. Why would you live anywhere else?”

IF you hear a strange baby crying in your garden, or maybe an unhappy cat, there’s a good chance you’re listening to a Green Catbird. The Catbird’s call is a most unsettling noise. I’ve heard of people moving house to escape it. The Green Catbird is a member of the bowerbird family. Unlike other bowerbirds, Catbirds establish lifelong monogamous pairs. Indeed, so chivalrous is the male Catbird that he delivers tasty titbits to his mate all year round. Unlike their Bowerbird cousins, male Catbirds don’t build a bower on the ground to attract a mate. Instead, they have been seen clearing performance spaces into which they place pale green leaves. The nest is a messy bundle of twigs and vines, usually in a tree fern or the branches of a low tree. They even happily nest in stinging trees, like the Gympie-Gympie, which is considered to generate the most pain of any Australian plant. Like some other birds, the adults may perform an Oscar-winning “broken wing” display if they need to distract predators from the nest. Catbirds are highly territorial with an average home range of five acres, usually containing a few fig trees. As a result of this possessive impulse, they sometimes attack their own reflection in house windows or the side mirrors onThatcars.incredible call is most often heard during breeding season which is Spring and early Summer. So any day now those cats and babies may become more vocal. Personally, I find it highly amusing. Green Catbird

Last month Tourism Noosa won the Mumbrella Award for Sustainable Practices at the 2022 Mumbrella Awards, Australia’s most prestigious media and marketing awards. Tourism Noosa CEO Melanie Anderson said: “We are thrilled to win this award which is truly a showcase of the many environmental and sustainability programs, activities and principles that Tourism Noosa runs and abides by. Juanita Terry-Bloomfield, Head of Sustainability and Program Design for Tourism Noosa said “It was wonderful to be acknowledged for our Plastic Free Noosa program, Trees for Tourism and our Sustainable Events Program and Criteria. “It was great to hear the judges acknowledge that this was a grassroots, community-focused, environmental campaign approach, with direct evidence of making a difference.”

“There was a need for swimming lessons, so I started a swim school in my garden,” sheShesaid.also became involved in numerous other town activities – more on them later. Life was idyllic as the pair raised their children Franky, now 20, James, now 17, Nik, 16 and Will, 15. But television re-appeared into the family in “I2008.got tracked down, at a time when we were thinking ‘maybe one of us needs to get a bit of a job’. The swim school was breaking even, but we needed to put something out there in the universe.

“I was on the first Big Brother, and did Miss World a few times, a lot of BBC shows and lots of lifestyle shows.” Meanwhile, Anita had moved to live elsewhere in London, arriving in Shepherd’s Bush in 1997. “That’s where I met Guy [Auckland]; we wereGuyhousemates.”hadgrown up in a small Oxfordshire village, which was to later prove pivotal. “Then we ‘got together’ – and four years later I was pregnant. I said to Guy I was ‘thinking I’m ready to go home’. “He was working in the city selling commercial space and hated it. He said, ‘let’s do it’. “We left at the end of 2001 and in 2002 we travelled, looking for a place to live.

Anita started to invest in her community.

“I thought ‘I don’t know what that is – it must be some cable show’. “She said, ‘I’ve moved to New York, do you want to do it?’.

“Then my coordinator, from when I was at Disney Channel, messaged me to say, ‘What are you up to? We need a producer for this show House Hunters International’.

SOMETIMES THE COMPLETELY UNEXPECTED CAN CHANGE A LIFE – AND OPEN A DOOR TO UNIMAGINED DREAM FULFILMENT. JUST ASK ANITA POTERI.

“Three of four subjects for the shows were friends: a Kin Kin family moving to Great Barrier Island in New Zealand; friends moving from England to the Gold Coast; [another] moving from Los Angeles to Melbourne, another from Brisbane to Vanuatu.

“I gave up my TV career here; I thought that was the end: we’ve got four kids nowand live in middle of nowhere.”

Anita turned up at the Godalming house the following Monday, not knowing anything about her employers.

‘Matriarch’

ATTENDING her Brisbane high school in the late eighties, Anita admits to being a daydreamer more than an academic.

“I got £100 a week, a car, accommodation for free, had weekends off and all I had to do was look after the boys.

The Red Dwarf experience triggered a cascade of television opportunities for Anita including UK shows such as Naylor’s 10%ers, Groundforce, Grassroots, Food and Drink and more.

“We arrived in London [in 1993] with no money, no “Someonejob.suggested becoming a live-in nanny, so I went to a nanny agency and got offered five jobs – four in London and one in Surrey.” But rather than a future of “hanging out with Aussie backpackers” in London, she chose Surrey. “I went for the interview - and got it.”

House Hunters International is aired in Australia on 9Life and 9Now channels.

Anita and Guy wanted a sustainable lifestyle, and Kin Kin was ideal for that purpose.“Wegot the house, and the plan at the time was to chill out and have kids and start our life here.

“I found I just needed to set up for four shows. They said they’d never done one from Australia, ‘we’ll send a director from New York’, and I was like, okay.”

“I had a younger brother, so I knew how to deal with boys.” Anita had always planned to travel again after three months. “When I did put my notice in, they said ‘no, we love you - if you stay until the end of the year, we’ll give you a job on Red Dwarf’.

“I messaged back ‘I’ve got four kids’. She responded, ‘You can do it from home’.

That circle of life, I always think about it: my grandparents emigrated to Australia from Greece, I emigrated to England, then I dragged my English husband to Kin Kin.

“I tried Sydney, came back and decided on London – then two mates said, ‘We’re coming with you’.” They went via Greek island Kythira, where Anita’s grandparents came from, staying for three months, followed by a sixmonth trek through Europe.

“It turned out to be Doug Naylor, a producer of [British cult comedy BBC series] Red Dwarf. “They had two beautiful boys aged three and five. I woke up in the morning as the parents went off to work and left this note telling me what to experience,noDespitedo.”nannyingAnita was a quick study.

“I grew up in Kenmore and lived in the same suburb for 22 years,” she said. “I wasn’t very good at school, a bit of a daydreamer about [working in] movies and TV“Ishows.wentto TAFE doing business management for two years, then to uni –but it was not for me; I’d rather have been drunk at the pub.” Anita went to work in Cairns, then returned to try university again, but it still wouldn’t stick.

“I didn’t know what that was, as it wasn’t in Australia at the time. They put on an episode, called Backward: I literally fell off my chair laughing. “I said ‘deal’. “My first job was running through the lines with the actors, then worked my way up reallyChannel.forscriptasproduction,post-coordinator,andproductionbetweencreativewellaswriterDisney“Theydidgood training - any show you do for the BBC you’d get sent on a course.”

“We drove the east coast looking for the ideal spot. We looked at Port Douglas but it was too hot for an Englishman; we liked Magnetic Island, but you can’t swim all yearButround.”taking a back road one day through Noosa Shire on the way back from a Rainbow Beach search, they discovered Kin Kin.“We fell in love with Kin Kin - we camped on the Oval to capture the vibe, we looked at the school - a nice little one - and then it was between Rainbow Beach - and this one was more our budget.”

Since COVID, Anita has only done statebased episodes. “I recently did my first outside the state, in Adelaide. It takes four days to film an episode.”Manyfeatured have become firm friends.

“They look at three properties, pick one, and then we see them living in their new home happily ever after, or sometimes choosing the wrong house. “Or the wrong country.”

“They come and visit Kin Kin; it’s like I’m the first person they get to know.” Amidst all this activity, Anita also ‘runs’ Kin Kin, as an acknowledged matriarch of the township, with plenty of support from others.“It’smy other passion. I help with Kin Kin Markets and the school – for 17 years all my four kids went there – and I am part of the community group trying to save the town from danger on our roads due to the huge increase in trucks servicing the Kin Kin“Wequarry.areresurrecting Kin Kin Markets –we’ve just had our biggest ever.” Then there’s the annual Pink Stumps cricket match. “It started in 2016, because one of the mums had breast cancer. I went to visit her in hospital and there was a McGrath [Foundation] nurse there. I looked into it and found the Foundation was self-funded –so I organised an annual fundraising event.” The township hasn’t grown much in the time Anita and Guy have lived there. “Kin Kin has not changed much in last 20 years. Back then, there was the general store (now Black Ant), the pub, the art bank where Kin Kin Depot is now, and the school.“We’ve got the hall and the Community House has just reopened, [where] a lot of little working groups meet up. “Lots of people out here are careerminded but you wouldn’t even know because they’re so down to earth. “There’s no ego.” Anita said the township population is about 800 – and of like mind. “Everyone moved here for the same reason - a non-materialistic lifestyle. “You drop your kids off to school and someone’s left a pumpkin on the bonnet of your car, or a bunch of bananas on your car seat.“That’s what we wanted for our children, that’s why Kin Kin won us over rather than anywhere else in Australia.”

BETWEEN JULY AND DECEMBER KOALAS ARE ON THE MOVE. BE AWARE. DRIVE WITH CARE. If you see a sick or injured koala, call it in! Phone 5527 2444.

The four episodes were well-received.

The number of koalas being injured or killed on Noosa roads is increasing each year. Most strikes occur during breeding season when koalas are on the move. Juveniles are dispersing from their mothers to find their own home range while others are looking for a mate.

“It’s time I look for my own home.”

“New York said they were great [and] ‘we want another eight – can you direct them’? “I said ‘sure’. As producer and director, I had to go and leave my family to go and film, and then it just became a full-time job. “I think I’m up to 276 episodes.”

“I had just done that. “That circle of life, I always think about it: my grandparents emigrated to Australia from Greece, I emigrated to England, then I dragged my English husband to Kin Kin.

“The show was initially just in the States, but it’s now in 200 countries. It’s all about emigrating, moving and finding a home in another country.

“It’s a big brave thing for people to move countries.“It’salla lifestyle reality, about their moves. There’s an interview about what sort of house they’re after, why they’re moving, what’s at stake, all the pros and cons of moving countries.

NATIONAL REDUCTIONSEMISSIONSLOCKEDIN Queensland’s secured a major win! After a decade of inaction and distraction under the LNP we’ve now secured agreement between governments to enshrine emissions reductions objectives into the laws governing Australia’s energy market.Thisis all happening while Queensland continues to keep downward pressure on power prices by bringing more renewable energy supply online and investing in storage.Thisagreement to start work on what will be legally binding energy objectives sends a very clear message to industry and investors that all Australian governments are committed to achieving a decarbonised, affordable and reliable power grid. And make sure to keep an eye out for your $175 energy rebate in your next power bill, which is only possible because the Palaszczuk Labor government has kept Queensland’s power assets under public ownership.

REACHED Queensland’s Path to Treaty has reached an historic milestone and the Queensland Government has announced the next steps on the state’s Path to ThisTreaty.will involve work on the legislative architecture to establish the formal mechanism to enable the Treaty/Truth Telling process to be enacted and fully realised.Treaty is for all Queenslanders. CLARE STEWART Noosa Mayor

It is great news for our hinterland residents with the completion of the Wahpunga Lane bridge rebuild at Kin Kin. The new concrete bridge has a 100year life span and being concrete in nature it will reduce the ongoing maintenance costs for our ratepayers. It, along with around 130 other council assets, were impacted by the February floods. Council is working hard to get through the continued enormous workload with our road grading teams out and about in our hinterland, specifically Federal, Cooran and Pinbarren. Currently crews are repairing around 70 potholes daily across the Shire which is a mammoth task.

The Kin Kin Road Project involving an 800m widening of the road is moving into the second stage being approximately 150m. As all 4 stages of this project are not expected to be completed until early 2023, weather permitting, this will be a frustrating time for all so some patience, as well added extra travel time, will be needed. We are still waiting on the determination from the court case, and will update as soon as received. For our community organisations, have your say on amendments to Incorporated Associations and Charities Regulation with submissions closing on September 12. For more information on this and other consultations please go to www.getinvolved. qld.gov.au/gi/Asalways,too little room here so to catch up on all other news head to our Facebook page, as well Noosa 360 and our monthly newsletter, which you can find at www.sandybolton.com. The QCWA centenary celebration at Cooroy was inspirational with many stories of activism from the 20s through today, whilst MC’ing at Pomona King of the Mountain was energizing from the incredible runners of all ages, with the documentary about the history of the race fascinating. The Noosa and District Landcare Graduation Ceremony was a real ‘family’ affair, with the majority of graduates in Conservation and Land Management already securing jobs. Plus, many more gatherings showcasing all that we love about our home, including the PTSD Dogs fundraising Pet Expo which saw Bear enjoy his first doggy icecream! Through our Seeds for Change Grant we have recipients across the community delivering projects that are exciting in their capacity to effect change within so many arenas! From Sevgen’s Galeru bush tucker orchard, to signage for the reduction of wildlife strikes, a share house program and our first indigenous hub, the projects are varied and innovative. As previously advised, the Lake Macdonald Dam upgrade had to be reviewed, and SEQwater are currently undertaking an options analysis which should be presented before end of year.

Speaking of roads, traffic is flowing through the new roundabout at the CooroyNoosa Road/Beckmans Road intersection, following the opening of one lane to traffic. Moving traffic onto the roundabout has made room for the rest of the works to be completed and when finished the two full lanes of the roundabout will be open to traffic. Works now will focus on the northern side of Cooroy-Noosa Road and converting the old section of Beckmans Road into a service road access for nearby residents. Noosa Council is delivering Stage 1 of the Tewantin Bypass project with Transport and Main Roads as part of the $400 million road stimulus package funded by the Qld Government. $9.81 million has been allocated to upgrade the intersection.

Assurances have been given that should any change occur to the previous drafted design, the amenity of surrounding residents, environment and safety of those living downstream are in all considerations.

Speaking of capital works, the Black Mountain Road landslide is the biggest experienced in the Sunshine Coast region in 30 years with initial reconstruction costs estimated to be between $25-$30 million. Geotechnical assessments have shown the damage to be more extensive than initially thought, with repairs to take around two years. Experts have advised that much of the damage is below the surface and restoring the area is a complex task. Residents were given an update at a specially convened information session at Black Mountain Road recently. The project is a priority for Council and all tenders will be fast-tracked. Council is also doing a significant amount of works on the Anderson Road causeway and regular grading of the road to minimise community disruption as it’s not possible to create a bypass around the slipped section of the road. We’re also liaising with Queensland Reconstruction Authority which administers disaster recovery funding on behalf of the State government and to date they have been very supportive. Finally, the first two of our library book vending kiosks has opened. The Peregian Beach ‘BookShelf’ kiosk has more than 200 items available for borrowing. A second library BookShelf kiosk will be up and running at Pomona in the next few months. With the library kiosks in place we aim to provide easier and improved access to library items. The Peregian Beach BookShelf kiosk is located in the foyer of the Peregian Beach Community House (5-7 Rufous Street), Peregian Beach and is accessible during opening hours – Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday 9am-2pm Until next month, stay safe, Clare

“We opened the café four years ago this month,” Nina said. “But we started roasting coffee more than 10 years ago from home for our Eumundi Markets stall. As Eumundi markets got busier and Flying West grew, we needed a commercial space to grow the roasting side of things and for people to come and visit the headquarters.”

The pair ‘put the vibes out’ to find a place and saw the potential in the Tender Shed.

“They were ready to move on, so we moved in.”Ben was 12 years old when he first started helping his parents at their coffee cart – now aged 40, he and Nina have quite a business.

“We now supply a number of cafes and restaurants,” he said. The brand is now available across south-east Queensland and into northern NSW. The industrial atmosphere of the Fellowship Drive shed is tempered by hanging plants, timber furnishings and easy music throughout, creating a calm and friendly environment to enjoy a quiet specialty coffee, with a variety of meals available.

The customers come from across the region, from all demographics, and are loyal to the cause.Allthe food is made on the premises, with only local croissants and breads brought in. They have five chefs, that have a passion for wholesome food and supreme coffee. It’s very much a family affair.

WHAT was once the Tender Shed, selling second-hand furniture, is now an urbanindustrial destination in Doonan’s commercial heart.

Ben West’s parents once ran a coffee cart at Eumundi Markets, and since he took it over he and partner Nina have created Flying West, a coffee-roasting enterprise coupled with a trendy café-restaurant – and they still do Eumundi, along with Yandina and Noosa Farmers Markets.

“Each coffee blend has a story behind it, it’s family-oriented,” Nina said. “We started roasting within two weeks of welcoming our first child. The blend ‘Cheeky Monkey’ came about after our little girl [for daughter Zayla, now 10], then ‘Little Friend’ is after our little boy [Archer, 7].”

Page 28 | Your Local Lifestyle September 2022 BOOKS WANDERER – by Alan ‘Fox’ Rogers

Alan ‘Fox’ Rogers’ first novel Wanderer reflects these tumultuous times vicariously through the eyes of his hero Max, an affable and even more naïve boy-man who arrives with his family as his parents’ sole offspring in the still-country town of Brisbane, fresh from a middle-class English upbringing with his senior school years still ahead of him. Max’s journey lives up to his surname as he firstly finds his feet in Queensland’s then-corrupt capital during the infamous ‘Joh Era’, latterly escaping the clutches of the equally corrupt local cops and marking out a pathway of discovery across the state and into the Territory and Top End. His growing capability with a camera germinates a budding career, while he meets and shares experiences with a diversity of characters on his part- hitchhiking and much-walking journey, from long-distance truckies to environmentalists to First Australians imparting their ancient wisdoms.Max’ssense of being an ‘outsider’ ensures a non-judgmental openness to all his experiences – perhaps reflective of the author’s own youth.

The sense of instant camaraderie ‘on the road’ as Max encounters these characters is charming - but is it realistic today? Perhaps. Or is it nostalgia for the seemingly simpler, more innocent times of fifty years ago?

THE decade of the 1970s was a time when Australia discarded some of the last vestiges of its own cultural naivety. The coming of progressive government through Gough Whitlam, oil shocks, the Dismissal, Vietnam, and a growing concern for the nation’s huge but fragile environment were just some of the hallmarks of that decade.

Wanderer is an easy page-turner, a classic Australian yarn, that shows an understanding and an appreciation of the history, splendour and complexity of this vast land. It should be required reading for any city slicker choosing to venture ‘out there’.

THE first of two library book-vending kiosks is now up and running in Noosa Shire. More than 200 items are available for borrowing at the Peregian Beach ‘BookShelf’ kiosk. Borrowers can browse and make their selection via a touchscreen which guides them through the borrowing and returns process. A second Library BookShelf kiosk will be up and running at Pomona in the next few Librariesmonths.andGalleries Manager, Tracey King, said Council’s aim was to extend library services beyond the Noosaville and Cooroy Library branches.

“We are looking to access funding from the Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA) and prioritise work to ensure isolated communities are supported,” he said.

Bryan O’Connor, Civil and Asset Operations Manager, says road crews look after 870kms of roads - equivalent to the distance from Noosa to Mackay.

BIG SPEND ON ROADS

Page 30 | Your Local Lifestyle September 2022 Council has an ambitious $42 million capital works program, after delivering a record $35 million in projects last year.

Mr Sengstock said a challenging construction environment, fuelled by material and labour shortages, added another complexity.

BUILDING BETTER INFRASTRUCTURE ACROSS THE SHIRE Council is focused on fast-tracking work to rebuild flood damaged community infrastructure and deliver upgrades to meet the future needs of our shire.

“We seek community understanding and patience, but rest assured, we are striving to deliver our capital works program so that our current infrastructure is maintained, and damaged assets are rebuilt to be resilient to future weather events,” Mr Sengstock said.

Our local road network remains one of our most critical assets. This year, in response to community calls for greater investment in roads, we will spend $17 million of the $42 million capital works program budget on local roads.

“In the Hinterland alone, our maintenance grading program focuses on about 190kms of gravel roads, “This involves inspecting and repairing potholes, corrugations and improving drainage. Our focus is on the busier gravel roads and school bus routes,” Mr O’Connor said. “We’re also working through the backlog of requests for road work relating to ongoing storm damage such as potholes. Currently, our crews are repairing 70 potholes every day as well as delivering our usual schedule of work to maintain our existing road “Innetwork.”addition to this, our crews are delivering $5.3 million of road reseals across 690km of our existing sealed road network to improve safety and connectivity for all road users,” he said.

Civil Works Team with Caterpillar six-wheel grader.

“In some instances, reconstruction work cannot begin until engineering testing is completed and the design for reconstruction is undertaken,” Mr Sengstock said.

“There are over 100 assets damaged by floods, but we also need to maintain our existing asset base through renewal and upgrade works to ensure they’re in good shape to serve our communities for years to come,” he said.

Infrastructure Services Director, Larry Sengstock says a key focus is fast-tracking the significant task of rebuilding assets damaged in the recent flood events.

“We all love our pets, but it’s important we remember to register our dogs each year,” he said.

“Not only is registration a legal requirement, but it also helps Council to identify impounded or found dogs and reunite them quickly with their Registrationowners.” data also helps Council to ensure services such as waste bags, litter bins and off-leash areas are provided where they are most needed.

See you at the show! Council will be at Pomona Showgrounds for the Noosa Country Show on 9 and 10 September. Teams from libraries will attend with the Seed Library, Book Bike and reading mat and activities for under-5s. You can also explore the Heritage Noosa online collection.Learnvaluable information about recycling from the Waste Team, chat with the Go Noosa Team about sustainable travel, and find out about local disaster management planning from the Disaster Management Team. The Parks and Gardens and the Environment Teams will also display information about plants and wildlife around Noosa and they’ll be under the marquee with the Regional Gallery staff for all the fun and creative activities.

NOOSA’S CUTEST DOGS ARE BACK!

“A shire-wide audit of all nine Noosa Biosphere core trails has also been completed with upgrades planned for Trail 4 (Wahpunga Trail) and Trail 7 (Yurol Trail) by mid 2023,” he Thissaid.$1.68 million project has been made possible via funding from the Australian and Queensland Governments’ Local Economic Recovery Program through Category D of the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements, which supports projects that improve the community’s resilience and economic recovery.

Paul Kirkley, Local Laws Manager, said the competition was a great opportunity for dog owners to celebrate their pets, while promoting responsible pet ownership.

We have hit 400 registered Land for Wildlife members in Noosa. The latest statistics paint an impressive picture. “We will announce three runnerup prizes during the contest and the Grand Prize winner will be announced in early October”. All winning dogs will be featured on our Noosa’s Cutest Dog Calendar which will be available from November at Council offices for free with donations accepted for the RSPCA.

“Dog registration fees are also used to inform and educate the community about dogs.”

Noosa’s trail network is one of our shire’s most popular attractions for horse riders, walkers, runners and bike riders. Council has just awarded the tender to upgrade Trail 5 (Cooroora Trail) which links Pomona to Cooran via the Tuchekoi National Park. Project Manager, Aiden Flannery, says the upgrade will improve trail-to-town connectivity, enhance its effectiveness as a fire break through the bushland, increase the use of the trails for educational and recreational use and drive tourism.

“Design work on the trail hub upgrades has also been completed and will pave the way for a range of improvements at Pioneer Park, Cooroora Mountain Park and Stan Topper Park including new wayfinding and interpretive signage.

The Hollow Homes competition encourages community members to get involved by building their own form of a habitat box and their designs will be in the running for prize money. And talking about homes, there is a virtual army of school kids in family homes making art. Some of the best work made in our region is being shown in the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre’s annual Creative Gen exhibition. The gallery will be bursting it’s seams from September 16 with some amazing work by high school students. The exhibition runs until October 23 so there is plenty of time to get a glimpse of the art stars of the future. www.butterfactoryartscentre.com.au

KOORALBYN REDEFINING AUSTRALIAN MUSIC

In KOORALBYN, Grammy nominated Tibetan musician Tenzin Choegyal, contemporary vocalist Kacey Patrick, Spanish guitarist Andrew Veivers, Mununjali didge player Jared Fogarty, Swedish violinist Rebecca Karlen and Celtic pianist /accordianist John Reeves explore the interconnectedness of their personal stories. The performance group are redefining Australian music drawing on their cultures and unique artforms to reveal songs from their homelands and musical traditions as a shared expression of collective cultural authenticity. A superstar of the international stage Tenzin has been able to celebrate his home in exile with a musical family drawn from across the globe who all call Australia home. Tenzin says of Kooralbyn, “I love this group. Super diverse clouds drifting seamlessly into the musical border. Music is Life.” This not to be missed lineup is touring the Sunshine Coast throughout September. Tickets are on sale now at www.redchair.com.au PERFORMANCE DATES

The exhibition runs from Sept 2 to 11 and the official opening kicks off at 4pm on Saturday the September 3. Art is not the only thing that requires a home. The Environmental Club at Noosa District State High School is taking care of the homes for local species under threat, such as the Central Greater Glider, by hosting a collaborative nesting box competition with other local organisations.

“When you get to share your passion with another successful artist with totally different expertise - like renowned ceramicist Rowley Drysdale - it opens up your opportunities and forces you to chase a shared end goal.

“The project has encouraged me to continue to explore working with ceramics, giving me a new focus in my creative journey.”

“I found - working in 3D - that it was interesting to put a landscape into 3D on a large pot. It’s a different creative experience.

“The successful art piece is the result of your combined talents and not entirely dependent on one person’s abilities. Mostly this results in the end result being twice as good. “This is a first for me and it has opened up endless new opportunities for creating beautiful art.”

THE official launch of Noosa Open Studios this month offers the opportunity to collect your own unique art work made by not one - but two - local artists. The innovative 2D/3D Collaborative Project, is a unique art project pairing artists of different mediums and dimensions to create something truly original.

“The deckchairs were so popular and our artists enjoyed the challenge of working on a three-dimensional artwork,” she said.

All of the items will be on display prior to the auction at the Cooroy Butter Factory on Saturday 17 September. Make sure you come and view the works before they are put up for auction. The auction is a key fundraiser to support the annual Noosa Open Studios art trail. All are welcome to come along and support our local artists who have been working hard all year to prepare for the event. Ticket bookings for the auction are available through the Noosa Open Studios website. They are $65 per person. Noosa Open Studios, October www.noosaopenstudios.com.au1-9

Cooroy artists join forces: Painter Trevor Purvis with his collaborative pieces made with Ceramicist Rowley Drysdale.

“Encouraging our painters to work with our three-dimensional artists - such as sculptors and ceramicists - has provided the opportunity to create some truly unique creative outputs.”

Carol said this was the first time the collaborative approach had been used, and followed on from the successful Deckchairs on the Green from previous years.

“This year we decided to invite our threedimensional artists to create the ‘base’ from which our two-dimensional artists could work.”The result is a range of beautiful hand-thrown and hand-painted plates, vases, platters and bowls to sculptures, handcrafted lamps and even a woven shoulder bag.

Carol has worked with three artists for the project, using her hand-thrown plates and large vessels as the base product.

Trevor said the opportunity to share creativity with another artist was the highlight of his work for the project.

Collaboration boosts creativity for Noosa artists

“Creating art is a very lonely, intimate and self-indulgent obsession,” he said.

One of her collaborations is with Noosa painter and illustrator Dale Leach, whose highly recognisable and colourful work is in stark contrast to the usual muted but complex hues of Carol’s alternative firing methods.Dalesaid she learned a lot through the joint process.

“It was fabulous that Carol trusted me with her work and mentored me in how to approach the collaboration,” she said.

Ceramicist and Noosa Open Studios President, Carol Watkins, said the project was designed as an exciting way to encourage Noosa Open Studios participating artists to work together and grow their creative“Encouragingexperiences.our painters to work with our threedimensional artists - such as sculptors and ceramicists - has provided the opportunity to create some truly unique creative outputs,” Carol said. The 2D/3D Collaborative Project has been undertaken by an enthusiastic group of this year’s 117 artists on the Noosa Open Studios trails, with some truly spectacular results. These artworks will be offered for auction to raise funds to support the NOS event. The auction will be combined with the Noosa Open Studios event launch, on September 22, at the Saw and Mill restaurant, Cooroy. The event has been made possible with the support and sponsorship of local real estate business Hinternoosa, which will be providing an auctioneer.

Another collaborative project was undertaken by Cooroy Ceramicist Rowley Drysdale and Painter Trevor Purvis. Being neighbours made the collaboration a natural combination for the pair who have created a stunning range of plates and bowls.

Ceramicist and NOS President Carol Watkins said artists have been working hard to prepare their private studios and create new work for visitors to enjoy.

A common cause of back pain is the inflammation caused by the compounding of tiny tears in the microfibres of ligaments as we repetitively bend and move until our body screams enough! Our aim is to re-activate rest/digest/heal for optimal spinal flow.

Winter is an ideal time to rest, reflect and think about life. I invite you to join me in taking time this month to explore these concepts in your own life. WHAT would it take to look forward to each day? I asked this question recently to a client who was feeling stuck. She’d been searching for months for a solution to feeling a lack of zest for life. The goals she had set weren’t motivating her, and she admitted she didn’t feel connected to them. She had set these goals because they were what she thought other people expected of her. Other people included family, friends, and society. But they weren’t in alignment with what she wants out of life. It would be easy to ask her to sit down and set new goals, but I feel there is work to be done before that stage. Work that will shape the direction of her new goals. Work that will help her feel connected to what’s next.Together, we are exploring how she wants to feel each day, what strengths she can use, and what is sapping her energy each day. We’re discovering what her values are and the impact the past couple of years have had on her. Once that is complete, we will begin to set goals, and they will be goals to which she feels connected.

IT’S so important to set a good and active example to kids. Whether they’re children, your nieces or nephews, grandkids or even your best mates littlies. It may not always seem like it, but children look up to us adults and learn from what we do. So let’s inspire them to follow some good, spritely footsteps! It’s so important for kids to move and be active. It sets them up in life to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle, and is obviously so good for their mind, body and overall wellbeing.

Adding an exercise routine helps with coordination, balance, confidence, healthy weight control, making friends, burning off excess energy and simply keeping your kids fit and strong, just to name a few! It can also be a heap of fun and help in programming a really healthy pattern of exercising into their everyday lives, to continue on as they get older. There are quite a few places around the area that offer kids classes that are fitness based. So make sure you check them out and let your kiddos give them a go. Many people seem to think that kids can’t ‘workout’. That they may hurt themselves and that lifting weights and using equipment is dangerous.

But that’s not true. Obviously we don’t want them to be lifting excessively heavy weights or doing anything unsafe for their growing bodies, but under proper guidance, light resistance work combined with cardio, stretching and core work is perfectly safe and so beneficial.

I hope you enjoyed last month’s edition from Coolum to Point Arkwright. So let’s continue our 18km/4hr return journey, from Point Arkwright to Mudjimba along the Coastal Pathway. Point Arkwright has a small carpark otherwise there is street parking available. You don’t have to walk as this part of the coastal pathway is relatively flat so bring your bikes or e-scooters and it’s dog friendly.Thefirst part takes you through a couple of back streets and back onto the main road but don’t let this deter you - it’s all a part of the journey and is very well signed. Along this walk you will go through the Marcoola Yaroomba Foreshore/Bushland Conservation Reserve with a beautiful shady canopy. This is a wide shared pathway so please keep left, pass right and ring your bell to let people know you’re passing if on your bike. It’s along this part you will be able to duck off and check out the Mount Coolum Boardwalk. This vantage point has the best view of the beautiful stretch of beach from Point Arkwright to Mudjimba. The sun setting over an awesome view of Mt Coolum is amazing.

You don’t have to do the whole walk to enjoy the Coolum boardwalk which is only a short walk and wheelchair friendly. If you put Breezeway Street, Coolum into your google maps you will be able to find it.

My plan for a vibrant, regenerative agriculture community and economy in Noosa

The NBRF has supported two projects, the Rural Enterprise Report and the Agri-Hub, which have acted as a unifying gravitational force for many groups sharing the same vision. We found that many parts of a large puzzle must align to create the agriculture future we desire. The next step for the NBRF is the ‘Grow for Noosa Gala.’ We will share information on Melbourne Cup Day and raise money for projects that will take us forward. Chef Matt Golinski is working with locally grown, climate appropriate ingredients to enlighten us to the bounty Noosa local soil can produce. Finally, I have jumped in as President of Permaculture Noosa, which has introduced me to an amazing culture. There is a vibrant, caring community in Noosa and the world which lives by the ethics of ‘earth care, people care and fair share’. It represents a new philosophy which is replacing the western, extractive paradigm. I believe this philosophy is beginning to lead Noosa towards a resilient, healthier future. The main project of Permaculture Noosa is the finishing of a pavilion in the Cooroy Community Gardens. We are currently fundraising to get the roof structure up and the club will make the walls from crushed earth. This hub will be transformative in how Noosa thinks about food.

PERMACULTURE CLUB NIGHT

Don’t miss our September 6 Club Night as we have Graeme Sait as our GuestGraemeSpeaker.Saitis an expert on regenerative agriculture and an internationally-acclaimed speaker and educator. His focus is simply on how to grow good food, both profitably and sustainably. Nutrition Farming strategies aim to achieve maximum health and resilience for the soil, plants, livestock, people and the planet. He will be talking to us about reversing climate change and improving soils. www.permaculturenoosa.com.au AGRITECH DEMO DAY

NEWS IN BRIEF

By

THE goal is to reinvent agriculture in Noosa. This is a huge task! It takes the community to commit to changing their diets and food purchasing habits, it takes land owners to commit to regenerative farming, and it takes council to change its waste practices to support farming. To realize the vision, there is a lot of work to be done. This is what I am doing within three key groups. First, as a Noosa Councillor, I am looking to the future and seeing potential food shortages. We will suffer another drought eventually, and supply chains can be cut by natural disasters or international politics. We are vulnerable. Yet, Noosa can produce enough food to feed the shire. I believe a top priority is to dramatically increase our food resilience, decrease food miles, and focus on nutritious, tasty crops which thrive in our sub-tropical climate.

I am working with three key departments within Noosa Council: Waste: advocating for turning all organic waste into a product which fertilizes the land, whether it is mulch, compost, biochar, or an anaerobic digester by-product which turns to compost. Climate Change Response: Creating local agriculture which will feed us when calamity strikes. Also, agriculture can lead to carbon sequestration. Noosa Council’s environment strategy’s goal is 80% best land practice by 2030. Economic Development: Develop employment pathways leading to agriculture jobs. My Second position is a director on the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation (NBRF) board. The mandate of the NBRF is to maintain Noosa’s biosphere reserve status. Two key elements of the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere program are to support an economy which is in harmony with the environment and to leave the land to the next generation in the same or better condition than we received it. Our mandate is to support better land management by replanting trees and regenerative farming.

I am trying to facilitate the vision on many levels, from policy change in council to growing seedlings in the garden.

National School Tree Planting Day is an opportunity for school students and teachers to get their hands dirty while celebrating and supporting our native flora and fauna. This year Natives R Us Nursery staff busily prepared donations for up to 15 local Sunshine Coast Schools.

NATIONAL TREE DAY WITH NATIVES R US 97 Thomason Rd, Traveston I PH: 5485 1800 info@nativesrus.com.au I nativesrus.com.au STOCKING A HUGE VARIETY OF SUN-HARDENED NATIVES Specialising in • Grevilleas • Callistemons • Leptospermums • Melaleucas Call in and see Jacinta & her friendly staff WE ALSO HAVE A HUGE RANGE OF GARDENING ACCESSORIES Including • Potting Mix • Soil Improvers • Fertilisers • Mulch Lots of fun to be had planting trees at Tewantin State School

A range of native shade trees, flowering shrubs and ground covers were put into packages to ensure the schools had a biodiverse variety of different habitat trees. Particularly appreciated were the donations to Mawarra Independent School and One Mile State School whose gardens had been affected by the recent flooding events. “Mawarra Independent School recently partnered with the Living Classroom to create an amazing permaculture garden program for our school. As part of that we are planting native pathways for wildlife. We had just completed one of these beautiful gardens when the floods washed away all our students’ hard work and the cost of all our plants and mulch. Natives R Us Nursery, and their generous donation for School Tree Day, lifted out spirits and provided us with an opportunity to rebuild our beautiful garden,” commented Chandelle Duthie, Principal of Mawarra Independent School. “Natives R Us takes pride in being involved in local endeavours, and since opening the garden centre to the public back in 2020 we have got to know many locals and fellow plant enthusiasts. It’s been a tough couple of years for all of us but if there is a silver lining to COVID it’s that we’ve all been reminded of the importance of supporting local community and business and we feel blessed to be a part of that,” Jacinta said.

The three day walk traverses the country towns of Cooroy, Kin Kin, Cooran and Pomona via a series of dedicated walking trails through farmlands, natural forests and spectacular lookouts of the hinterland through to the ocean. The trail ensures you will get to experience the landscape, local cafes and antique shops encountered on route. You will find passionate local volunteer guides who will share their experience of the trails and their knowledge of the Noosa Hinterland. A good level of walking fitness is required, but this is not a race, plenty of time is allowed to complete each day’s walk.

the Great Noosa Trail Walk!

“We’re passionate about community and we’re passionate about regeneration of native flora and fauna for future generations, so donating plants for National Tree Day was an obvious way to support community, kids and environmental health all in one,” said Jacinta, owner of Natives R Us Nursery.

KING OF THE times a week for 4 or 5 weeks prior to get ready - this year I’ve done it 4 or 5 times and Wendy’s done it once! Our goal this year is to come in under the hour. Race day has arrived and arriving in Pomona was a pleasant surprise as there were no crowds & lots of parking. KOM has been scaled back this year due to COVID. After 2 years of lock-downs and cancellations it was wise to make this one a smaller event. We head to the start line to grab our numbers, say hi to many friendly familiar faces, then we do a few warm-up laps of the back streets with our 6 y/o grand son as pace setter and before we know it its 2pm and we are off and running. I usually get caught up in the hype and try to stay up near the front for a little while but this year we played it safe and started at the back and stayed there. The run to the mountain has a couple of little downhills but mostly its a steady climb to the base, so it’s a tough uphill run where many people go too hard and end up walking, we stick to our rehearsed slow jog and overtake a few. Swinging right at the base was a nice reprieve as this is a flat section that helps us catch our breath, then it’s onto the tourist track and up, up, up. We manage to stick to our slow jog with the occasional walk on a couple of steeper stair sections, overtaking a few more. Then it’s onto the main climb where jogging isn’t an option for us - best we can do here is no rest stops and try to keep moving up while giving way to all down runners. We were about 1/2 way up when we had 1st place come barreling down. Wendy has always been pretty fast on the upper sections and we soon pick up a few more places, overtaking her kiwi age group rival near the top. Down has always been where I pick up most places, Wendy is a lot less reckless than me so its a careful steady pace down for us this year, we must have been doing ok as we were out on our own all the way down. We hit the tourist trail running and even managed to run up it’s steep little uphill section! Out onto the fire trail and its time to stretch out and expend any energy left for the final gentle down hill run back to town. I can see Wendy has given everything in the climb and has little left so we push on as best as crossed the line at 56 mins, Wendy won her womens masters category, I was middle of the field for mine and Zach can’t wait till he is old enough to join us! Congratulations to all the organisers and volunteers for hosting another wonderful community event. We are all so very grateful for the time you take away from your family and friends to make this happen every year, THANKYOU SO VERY MUCH! Hope to see you all there on the last Sunday in July next year. Till then, wishing you all happy and safe adventures.

Page 45 OUR ANNUAL FAMILY FUN RUN AT KOM with Andy Flanagan

THE last Sunday of July is D Day for a bunch of runners who come together in Pomona to race up and down Mt Cooroora. I’ve been doing this race for nearly 30 years so I thought I’d give a bit of a competitors perspective on what it takes. I was in my mid 30s the first time and have been a repeat offender most years, where work or injury didn’t get in the way, so I’d say I’ve run at least 20 times. Way back then my goal was to join the under 30 minutes club - these days it’s to cross the finish line. I never did make that under 30 club, 31 min stands as my PB and these days I’m happy with anything under 40 - at least that was until the course changed this year. Now its nearly a couple of km longer and takes an extra 10min. Traditionally the race has been the shortest route to the top from the middle of town but due to erosion on the lower section of the hill we now have to take a right at the base and head across to the tourist trail. I like this course better as it allows the field more time to spread out before we hit the climb. I have always encouraged my wife and kids to join me and occasionally they do. This year my eldest and my wife signed up. Keeping pace with my eldest isn’t an option any more so I’ve decided to pace set for Wendy who has also done next-to-no training. We did a practice run the week before and were happy to come in under the hour. Most years I’ll run the course 2-3

TEAM Impact travelled to Melbourne with two of their professional boxers Ben Cameron-Hands & Brock Shelley to compete in a Big Time Boxing event held at the Melbourne Pavilion. Ben Cameron-Hands moves to 3-0 as a professional with a points victory over tough Melbourne southpaw Tyee Lee. “Ben boxed well, we had a game plan against our cagey opponent and full credit to Benny, he stuck to the plan and retains his unbeaten record,” coach Mark Evans said. Brock Shelley made his return to the ring after a four year lay off. Our opponent from Melbourne was the big punching Shane Carlin. Brock found his mark early in the first round wobbling Carlin with a big right hand. To Carlin’s credit he managed to survive the round and headed back to his stool to regroup. Round two saw both booths banging away until it was Shelley that found himself on the canvas. Brock managed to pick himself up and was allowed to continue the round. Rounds 3 & 4 saw both boys have there moments as they traded blows in a crowd pleasing slugfest. When the final bell rang both boys were out on their feet. The bout was awarded to Carlin via a points decision. “I am very proud of both these boys. They put the hard yards in the gym are are always ready to fight. It can be a little daunting walking into someone else’s back yard to compete, but these two take that challenge in their stride,” Mark said

Over the years we have provided record sales and successful sales to a variety of clients with unique, lifestyle, rural and residential property, offering strategic marketing options - on what is sometimes believed to be difficult sales - to achieve not only the successful sale but a pleasant and also memorable experience for our sellers.

A series of breakout sessions on Monday afternoon covered a range of hot topics. Our industry experts discussed everything from succession to making calls, listing presentations, to the latest in property management.Inaninspiring start to day two, Duncan Wardle, former Vice President of Innovation and Creativity at the Walt Disney Company had the crowd thinking differently. From drawing each other without looking, to trying to sell and explain an ‘elephant parachute’, the session was both interactive and eye opening. After a near-fatal accident in 2013 which left her paralysed from the chest down, Samantha Bloom shared her story of resilience. The audience was in tears as Samantha spoke about her incredible journey and the challenges she faced after falling from an observation deck in Thailand, resulting in the loss of use of three quarters of her body.

What a fantastic event.Afamily business with a staggering 120 years of knowledge on display offered a fantastic opportunity to network with business owners, leaders and agents, locally, interstate and overseas. The Connect conference started where it all began, in the humble town of Crows Nest at The Shed, where we gathered to pay tribute to the first office Ray opened. We then converged on the Gold Coast to take part in our biggest event ever. A variety of inspirational guest speakers over two very full days started with former New Zealand Prime Minister Sir John Key who discussed the idea of mastering leadership.
