Being 6’ 1” helps to stand out from the crowd, as well as being thinner than Bowie’s Thin White Duke and sporting a lengthy white head of hair resembling blues rocker Johnny Winter, but the nom de plume lends more to Jonny Taylor’s three middle initials than any rodential tendencies. At 73, he’s leading a sedate but creative life on a few hectares in Gheerulla near Kenilworth these days. But like so many who live quietly in the Noosa hinterland, it wasn’t always like that. Indeed, it’s a long way from dealing with fashion clients as diverse as Cher, Whoopi Goldberg and Leanne Edelsten. Born in England’s Surrey in 1948, it was far from the leafy stockbroker belt of today. “In those post-war days my parents were struggling,” Jonny recalls. “My father had been a Lancaster bomber pilot, one of those to bring out the last of the Jews from the concentration camps in Europe.” Jonny’s dad became a small farmer, providing him with an idyllic childhood among the ducks and other animals. A move to High Wycombe saw Jonny initially study zoology, botany and chemistry, but that soon gave way to the arts at Nottingham Art College, where the burgeoning English music scene was transforming the ambitions of so many young people. “We formed a band called the Furan Rings,” Jonny said. “I played guitar and sang. I wasn’t the studious type – which caused a few problems with my parents. “But after about six months I got a job at the college as a male model. It was an easy job and paid well. They had a girl model as well, but the union was strong in those days, so they were told to get a man as well.” Nottingham was only a train trip from London, where Jonny would spend evenings and weekends, visiting West End nightclubs like the UFO Club and the Marquee. “I was very interested in the hippie movement and the music, but I was intergenerational and too young to be really involved.”

Then he met a Swedish girl, spent a year in that country and nearly got married, but came home, broke, tail between legs, to High Wycombe. “My dad said ‘Why don’t you emigrate to Canada or Australia?’ “I said blimey, I’m so used to England and its muggy, horrible weather. But I was directionless at the time. (He chose Australia). “He managed to get me one of the last ‘£10 Pom’ tickets. It was a three-day flight. I arrived in 1971, in Melbourne, not knowing anyone. “I was shifted off to a boarding house in St Kilda. “Then one day the lady who ran the boarding house said to me ‘Tuesday morning at 8 o’clock queue outside and the bus and they’ll take you to a job somewhere’. “So I ended up at General Motors making ‘186’ engine blocks at Fishermans Bend, and stayed for about a year.” “After GM I decided I wanted to work outside and got onto building sites. “I wanted to build my strength up, feel Australian, being brown and fit, that sort of thing. It took me a long time to fit in – always the Pommie bastard – but it was nothing compared with the Italians and Greeks I met.” Jonny learned every trade on the sites, which was to prove so useful in later life, and he spent many years in the business. Then he discovered a nightclub called Bertie’s, a new industry for the city and a watershed in Jonny’s life. “I thought I’d doll myself up and visit, because there was nothing happening in the pubs – they all closed early then. “It was where I met my first Australian girlfriend, Lynn, an entrant in the Miss Victoria Quest - she was rather beautiful. “She was the one who suggested because of my London experience in fashion I should get a job in that area in Melbourne. “I worked with Just Jeans. Then I decided I wanted to do something no-one else was doing. I made a pair of boots for myself, covered an old pair, learned the business and by the 80’s it just took off.

“I had been selling through other shops but eventually opened my own shop in Melbourne’s Chapel Street.” It was called Jonathan Taylor Designs, and Jonny was making leather shoes, boots, belts and dresses – all for women. “I did a lot of stuff for bands, musicians, film stars. I made a load of guitar straps for the US band Poison when they came to Australia – and for Bon Jovi. It was stuff no-one else was doing.” And Jonny had good contacts. “I knew Molly Meldrum because of the shop. “I used to go to the Underground VIP club, up to the top area, where Molly and his mates were playing cards most nights. “I didn’t play cards but was up there a lot. He would put certain artists on to me but after a while if a big band like Rod Stewart’s was in town, they’d come to me anyway. “They’d send an agent along to tell the girls “Cher’s coming down here at 3 o’clock’ and you had to be prepared to close down the shop to other customers and if you wanted to get your boss in. “I’d get the call to go down and meet Cher and her band. There were some funny times. Cher used to giggle like a little girl. “There were all sorts of overseas bands, like Martha and the Motels – I was doing all women’s stuff so they’d come in and bring band members in and just lounge around the shop. “Whoopi Goldberg came in one day, with two different-coloured eye lenses in. “She more or less bought half the shop. Guys would be with their girlfriends, like

Rod Stewart, who’d just say to them ‘buy what you want’.” Jonny’s products were not really expensive. “I just had to make sure they were comfortable, don’t fall to bits, and girls could go out and dance in them.” Leanne Edelsten, wife of the celebrity Sydney medico, was also a regular. “She was instrumental in making me quite famous. She was on the front page of [all the Melbourne papers] in my gear. “I outfitted her [with] leather dresses, belts, handbags and stuff like that.” Eventually Jonny sold up to change his life and bought an East Malvern property he wanted to completely renovate. “I spent the next 10 years doing up the house. I kept a few special clients so was still doing odd jobs, kept some work space, and that’s when I got involved with some musos. “I met Andy Burns at that time and started writing songs. I recorded two albums with Andy. He worked with Jenny Morris and did the Hair tour and Oh Calcutta and a season with Steve Vizard’s late night show.” In 1996, the pair came up to do a gig at the Woodford Festival. “We went for a drive from the festival site to Eumundi – and I fell in love with the town.” He went back to Melbourne, then was tipped off about a ‘must-see’ hinterland property so he jumped on a plane. “The place was near Eumundi, just over the hills, and I fell in love with it, too - so

I bought it and sold my house. “I came up in my Kombi bus with my two dogs and two cats; the removal truck had already come up. “There was just a shed on the property. I’ll never forget it: everything all piled up on one end of the shed and my little bed up the other end. Coming from the high life in Melbourne to not knowing anybody – again – and having Jonny’s self-built and de that little bed there.” signed house, wit h his dogs Belle and Jonny’s plan was Ollie to build around the shed, doing everything from scratch. IN a bid not to be ‘haunted’ by the unfortunate cancellation of so many events due to COVID the Australian Wearable Art Festival is determined to bring joy and fun to the Sunshine Coast this year through a Halloween Fundraiser event on Saturday October 30 at Terella Brewing in North Arm. Australian Wearable Art Festival curator Wendy Roe, believes the Halloween Fundraiser is the perfect event for the current landscape – encouraging people to embrace costuming (and mask wearing!) and come together to support our local

artists who have been doing it tough. “The Halloween Fundraiser will be AWAF’s first-ever event fundraiser ahead of the Gala to be held in May 2022 and provides an exciting opportunity to get a sneak peak of new work from wearable artists, raise dollars for our arts community and have a trick-or-treat party at the same time,” said Ms Roe. “It is evident with the recent lockdown, we all need to take opportunities to come together when we can and we encourage people to pull together some friends and start planning outfits.” Every ticket includes a complimentary drink on arrival, entertainment with local band Raw Audio who will bring the dance floor alive, prizes for the best-dressed, live auction and a range of fun fundraising activities. A range of up-market food trucks will be available to purchase food from and Terella Brewing’s bars will be open until 10.30pm offering a range of beers, ciders, ginger beer and a hard lemonade. This Halloween Fundraiser is an 18+ event. Early Bird tickets for the AWAF Halloween Fundraiser tickets are now on sale for $65. Brett Gowley and Jodie Williams outside the Black Ant Gourmet cafe-restaurant in Kin Kin

‘Antsy’ ambitions turning dreams to realities By Alan Lander

WHEN Jodie Williams and Brett Gowley met each other in 2002, they quickly learned they had a shared vision for the future. At the time, Jodie owned and ran the restaurant Bistro Bistro in Cooroy, while Brett was already an accomplished carpenter and shopfitter. Jodie was a fifth-generation local, born in Cooroy, creative hospitality operator who, even before Cooroy, had made a name for herself with Noosa Marina’s Trio’s Restaurant in Tewantin, and many more quality eateries. “[At the time] we had a plan to do a commercial kitchen to cater for weddings, and that was going to be on a property we had in Cooroy,” Jodie said. “But things changed so we could no longer do it – and we outgrew that property anyway.” The big plan was to find a large property to farm, to supply food, to cater for weddings and functions – and eventually to provide accommodation with cabins to rent on a lake. Page 8 | Your Local Lifestyle September 2021

It took journeying through interest rate fluctuations, the global financial crisis and COVID to get there – but the dream is coming to fruition. In Kin Kin. “Someone who was living with us asked if I’d won a million dollars, where would we live,” Jodie said. “I worked out: Australia – it’s nice to visit other countries but not live there. “State? Queensland just stood out. [Then] we thought about up north: no. “We looked at Obi Obi, close to Montville. It was lovely, but a bit remote. “Then we looked here in Kin Kin – this is where my grandparents met, and my parents met and fell in love in Pomona.

“[So] I was attracted back to my home [area]. Kin Kin is so self-sustainable.” The pair bought a farm in 2009, and in 2013 invested in Kin Kin’s old, then-defunct general store building. “The general store was to be a rebuild; it needed demolishing. We thought it would be an asset to the town to have a café in town. There was the pub, and us,” Jodie said. Brett got stuck in to work his magic. He rebuilt the store, taking care to retain the street presence of it yet refurbishing it completely. And in what is almost an optical illusion, at least from the street, he has established a gallery of seating down the side of the building, leading to a huge, converted barn facing a rear garden that can cater for weddings, functions and events.

You can sit on the verandah and soak up that country atmosphere and eat locally grown and produced food.”

But Kin Kin isn’t really a pass-through town – and the population isn’t big – so how to make the business viable on a weekto-week basis? “We already had a successful catering company,” Jodie said. “We decided we would open the front of the store for locals, offering a variety of takeaways using the commercial kitchen out the back. “But we soon found out the [commercial] customers we were catering for had heard we had a café in Kin Kin and just had to come out and try our food.” “We [couldn’t] stop it, and it was bringing a different demographic to town – and not just to visit but to live. “It’s been wonderful to see.” And so Black Ant Gourmet was born – and hasn’t looked back. “[Black Ant] is everything: it’s a pantry, a takeaway, we sell pies and quiches, we do breakfast and lunch seven days a week, and dinner once a week on Fridays,” Jodie said.

COMMUNITY

“One night a week is enough,” she laughed. “Lunches are a la carte, and always have our five or six recipes that people keep coming back for, then we add a few specials that are more restaurant-style. “We use whatever ingredients are available at the time, what’s in season.” It’s an eclectic mix of clientele as a result. “It has been a delicate blend of locals, also a small element of tourism, mainly the day-trip drive market, especially with COVID and weekenders,” Jodie said. “Visitors can stay overnight, and visit Noosa which is only a half-hour drive. “It has definitely made a big difference. You can sit on the verandah and soak up that country atmosphere and eat locally grown and produced food.” The pair used to have a big green garden but reduced it to a time-manageable size, “but we grow our own flowers, greens, herbs, all those extra things we need”. An economic return on farming requires intense practices and huge amounts of time, Jodie said. “We are into slow food, not intensive,” she said. “The perils of farming: it needs 100% committment.” So, they now buy as much supply from surrounding local farmers and growers as possible, spreading the wealth and support. “We had too many balls in the air, so we ended up sourcing from other people through the slow food movement, properly done food. “I’ll support them locally, but we still grow our own pumpkins, beef, lamb and other leafy greens, that sort of thing.” If you think it’s just a little outpost, consider that Black Ant employs four chefs and six trainees which, added to other staff numbers, totals 18. Additionally, Jodie’s daughter Tahlia is helping maintain the family tradition, and has been there from the beginning. She is now Black Ant’s second-in-charge. That’s a pretty big operation. But the pair have not stopped there. As a key part of the ‘big plan’, Brett has designed and built Mayan Luxe Villas on their Mayan Farm land, to meet a burgeoning weekend stay and play accommodation market.

The villas are built together with complete privacy for three couples and shared facilities like a plunge pool, al fresco entertaining areas and a pizza oven and firepit, with country views that go for miles. “The villas have rammed earth walls, each built individually, with [added] recycled timber,” Brett said. “There’s no heating because there’s no need: they stay warm in winter and cool in summer. “I also built the furniture, the steel works,” Brett said. Jodie said it was going to be their home which they would occasionally rent out, “but we received huge COVID demand from people who can’t travel overseas”. “It’s in the middle of the farm, and we only book groups – but we’ve already got one family now doing an annual holiday booking,” she said. “We only started in January. I thought we’d have about 40% occupancy – Brett thought maybe 60% - but it’s actually running about 90%. “We’re doing a two-night minimum. We’ve also got approval for two cabins, and we will add another two. “We wanted to build four cabins on the water, to cater for small boutique weddings and similar. “It’s back to that original plan we had in 2002.” But wait – there’s more, as the saying goes. The workaholic pair are now in the process of planning to build a range of demountable but add-on transportable homes to provide affordable long term accommodation “I did an innovation master class a few years ago,” Jodie said. “My concept was ‘servicing the needs of the community, sustainably’, which was turnkey small units like a granny flat for efficient accommodation. “They are affordable, modern and streamlined. “I was planning to do them in a couple of years but with everything happening, we need to fast-track it.” Brett said he was “building two at the moment”. “They’re compact, they open out in winter to a Queensland-friendly liveable area,” he said. “You don’t have to have a massive house to be comfortable, and we lack affordable housing for workers.

Rammed earth and recycled timbers of Mayan Luxe Villas

“There are lots of reasons for it to happen. We are running out of land,” he said. Jodie added that one of their biggest issues was keeping staff in a rural area – so they will also build a couple of these units for staff to rent. “If they’re renting [elsewhere] and [owners] sell, suddenly they have to find somewhere to live. “If it ends up being, say, Nambour, they’ll get work in Nambour; [the same] in Gympie. “It can be an issue, so building for key workers, they will have more disposable income.

“And if we’re setting this up for us, we can do it for other people.” Brett said the units were transportable “but not tiny homes - they don’t have wheels and are a much larger space”. “They are modern Class A or secondary dwellings. “You can ‘clip on’ extra space.” Black Ant Gourmet is now taking bookings for Christmas functions. for international banks during Australia’s financial de-regulation period,” he said. Of Scots/English origin – and Australian since 1994 – Alan has lived in Noosa Shire since 2001 with his partner, teacher and behavioural manager Carol Gollschewsky and their (temporarily unemployed) school wellbeing Labradoodle dog, Angel. They live in Pomona. “I had always wanted to be a journalist, but family circumstances had me leaving home in Edinburgh at 16 for London, instead of studying at that time,” Alan said. “Working for a major London employment agency by day and playing music by night was fun, but then I met

a girl from Glasshouse Mountains and I ended up following her back to Australia, on a working holiday visa, in 1980. “That ‘holiday romance’ fizzled pretty quick – as they usually do - but thankfully, 13 years later, I met Carol.” Alan said today’s media industry was continuing to evolve in a new era. “(Rupert) Murdoch and his company have wreaked immense damage on regional media in Queensland,” he said. “He destroyed what was a respected, informative, long-standing – indeed, very profitable – newspaper in Noosa News. “I was proud to have been a journalist there. But the silver lining is that new local media, a mix of print and online is emerging, many with owners who have a personal commitment to their region, like Your Local Lifestyle. “Noosa is full of interesting, intelligent people with fascinating if often unsung backgrounds who have, and expect, a much higher than average engagement with their community. “I am passionate about helping keep Noosa on its unique, sustainable trajectory over these last 40 years or so – there is no other Noosa, nor is there meant to be. “Nor is Noosa meant to be a facsimile of ‘anywhere else’. Too much good work by so many good people has gone into it.”

Sustainability excellence THE Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation (NBRF) has launched a new annual awards program to celebrate environmental and sustainability excellence in the Noosa Shire, with entries now open. NBRF Executive Coordinator, Sharon Wright says the Noosa Biosphere Awards celebrate the individuals, businesses and organisations implementing local solutions to the global challenges of sustainable development and addressing climate change. “The Noosa Biosphere Awards are about recognising those making a difference in our community who are championing environmental and sustainability innovation and excellence,” she said. “Noosa has a strong track record of protecting our precious natural environment and progressing towards a sustainable future,” said Ms Wright. There are four award categories covering land, water, wildlife, and people and economy with two categories already securing high profile sponsors. “We’re proud to announce Tourism Noosa and the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) have come on board as award sponsors this year. We would also love to connect with other local businesses interested in sponsoring

a Noosa Biosphere Award or supporting our Wild Koala Gala,” said Ms Wright. Entries are open to individuals, businesses, community and charitable groups, collaborations or partnerships within the Noosa Shire and may include a product, service or project. “Anyone can nominate an individual, business or organisation. So please come forward, get behind this great imitative, and tell us who you think is deserving of a Noosa Biosphere Award,” said Ms Wright. Nominations and entries are now open. Entries close midnight, Sunday September 26. Winners will be announced at the Noosa Biosphere Wild Koala Gala on Tuesday November 2. For more information on how to enter, visit www.noosabiosphere.org.au/awards.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE S URVIVORS T O B E N E F I T F R O M M AY O R ’ S B A L L SUNNYKIDS Cooroy Family Support Centre will be a major recipient of funds raised from the ‘Mingle with the Mayor’ Ball which was held recently. Hosted at the Sofitel Noosa Resort, proceeds from the event will directly assist those most vulnerable in our community. Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart said “Domestic and family violence is a huge problem Australia-wide and unfortunately the Sunshine Coast is not immune.” “Police advised me recently that they’ve seen an increase of over 40 percent in domestic violence issues in the past 12 - 18 months in our region alone,”Ms Stewart said. SunnyKids has a team of experienced and devoted individuals offering emergency accommodation, domestic violence counselling and education programs for Sunshine Coast families in need. “I’m thrilled that an injection of funds will make it possible for them to increase services not only in Cooroy, but hopefully across the Noosa Shire,” said Ms Stewart. SunnyKids General Manager, Kathleen Hope, was delighted with the prospect of a funding boost and said frontline services were in huge demand. “Each year we provide 8000 nights emergency accommodation and since COVID-19 hit, we have seen an increase in people seeking our help. Any funds we receive from the Ball will

be put towards increasing our counselling and support services for local families, including children who often experience severe disruption due to domestic and family violence,” Ms Hope said. “It’s wonderful that they’ve chosen SunnyKids as a recipient of funds. Their efforts to improve the lives of those most in need is inspiring. They’re a shining light to all,” Mayor Stewart said. Josanne Falla leads the event organising committee and said they were extremely grateful to the Mayor for her support and that the local business community are true heroes. “Our local business people are amazingly generous and deserve a gold star for their donations, big and small. ” Ms Falla said.

OF all our honeyeaters, the Scarlet Honeyeater is the most brilliantly coloured. It is also the smallest of the many different types of honeyeater Australia plays host to. The predominance of flowering plants with lots of nectar has resulted in honeyeaters becoming the largest bird family on our island continent. As is usual in the world of birds, it is the male Scarlet Honeyeater that is the more brightly festooned. The female is a dull grey brown with just a hint of red under her chin. Scarlet Honeyeaters are busy mating and nesting at the moment. I watched two males competing with one another for a female’s attention. The female then collected lichen from the tree in the photograph to line her nest. The tiny cup-shaped nest is usually constructed in the fork of a tree. It is fashioned from bark and grass expertly glued together with spider web. These are busy, fast-moving birds that prefer to hang about in the upper canopy. That means they are more often heard than seen. The call is an unmistakable bright, high-pitched whistle that rises and falls. The song has been described as “silvery”, which I think is a rather fitting and imaginative visual reference for a sound. In some places, these delicate little birds have earned the unfortunate nickname “blood bird”. Now that shows a distinct lack of imagination.

GOOD SHEPHERD SERVICE LEARNING COVERS MANY MILES

Students proudly display just some of the boxes of shoes heading off to Mornington Islands Deadly Runners program

HELPING those less fortunate is the focus in the Year 11 Service-Learning unit. When a group of Good Shepherd students heard about the Mornington Island Deadly Runners Program they were determined to make a difference. After contacting staff at Mornington Island State School, located on the Gulf of Carpentaria, they learned that donations of running shoes and socks would be greatly appreciated. The Mornington Island Deadly Runners is a group that provides motivation and

support to help people reach their running goals in a safe, social and encouraging environment. They focus on achieving physical goals and addressing social and health problems through building self-worth and resilience and celebrating achievements. The Mornington Island Deadly Runners provide coaching and encouragement for all levels of running. All community members are welcome, with particular focus on the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. The group is led by volunteer coaches, local health, recreation

and youth services, with ongoing support from the Indigenous Marathon Foundation. Mrs Karen Lunn, Head of Senior Years at Good Shepherd said “It was amazing to see the energy that these kids brought to the project. They were quick to come up with fundraising ideas but also concepts to increase the profile of the vital work undertaken by the team on Mornington Island. Some of the students are big runners so know how important it is to have shoes that fit. They really couldn’t imagine what it would be like to run barefoot”. Determined to not only raise funds for the program, the students initiated a ‘Crazy Sock’ day encouraging students to donate not only money but also running shoes that no longer fit but still had plenty of running miles in them. Mr Mark Davies, senior teacher at Good Shepherd who worked closely with the students said ‘The response from the College community was great. Once we had the shoes, I took them home and washed them. One of the students contacted a local sports business and received a huge box of brandnew socks. Once we have all the goods together, they will be sent to Mornington Island and hopefully put some smiles on the faces of those super keen runners.’ If you would like more information about this very valuable program go to www.facebook. com/morningtonislanddeadlyrunners/

Sid Lettman … Cooroy’s first Taxi Driver SIDNEY Stanley Lettman was just 11 days old when his mother passed away due to complications that had arisen from childbirth. He was raised by his aunt and uncle – Ellen and William Brittain along with their five children. When Sidney was about 10 years old, William Brittain moved the family from North Arm to the township of Cooroy. By 1910 Cooroy was a flourishing community that had three banks, Fenwick’s sawmill, Wimmers cordial factory, Boden’s general store, a school and a hotel. Sidney Brittain was enrolled at Cooroy State School and on September 19, 1911 he was listed as Number 120 on the Admissions Register. Growing up as a member of the Brittain Family, throughout his early years, Sidney was known as Sid Brittain. Sidney was raised in a family that was very community orientated. Sid’s uncle and aunt were well-known figures in Cooroy and surrounding district. They ran a boarding house that was also the Noosa Maternity and Nursing home in Cooroy. William was president of the local ambulance committee, a local councillor and in 1925, he purchased the Coronation Hall in Diamond Street which was used for community functions and to show silent movies accompanied by Ellen on the piano. The Brittains were also well known supporters of many charities and local sporting groups. The roll of community service became very familiar to Sidney and it was to continue throughout his life.

Sidney left Cooroy State School in 1914 around the age of 12. He helped with the running of the boarding house and then acquired his driver’s license at the age of 21 in 1923. But Sidney was known to have been driving for many years without an official license and his occupation had been listed as a “car driver”, (also known as the Cooroy Taxi service). At the age of 24, on the 14th April 1927, Sidney married Ethel McLean. They lived at 47 Cedar Street Cooroy (now a part of Elm Street) from 1936 and it was from here that Sidney ran his Taxi Service until 1972...For almost 50 years, Sid Lettman was a very important part of Cooroy’s community. BIG HAPPENINGS at Little Pantry ONE great thing about villages is they don’t change too quickly, so 10 years for a business isn’t a long time. But it’s still worth celebrating when the time comes. And that’s exactly what Kay Kelloway is doing on Thursday September 9 at her shop, Pomona’s Little Pantry on Memorial Avenue, to commemorate her 10th anniversary owning the business. Kay has had a long association with the shop, working there part-time while raising her kids before buying the business. “I’m from the Mary Valley, and moved to Pomona when I got married,” Kay said. “I’ve lived in Pomona for 28 years, but we’re now back in the Valley in order to have more land.” Kay changed the shop’s name from ‘Pomona’s Fruit and Vegetables’ about four years ago to reflect the changes she has made. Pomona’s Little Pantry still offers these but has expanded to include organic grocery lines and vegan products, dairy and health foods. “There’s a big market for organics here,” Kay said. “Since COVID more people are thinking about what and how they’re eating.” Kay also places a huge emphasis on supporting local farmers and producers and is also stocking local fresh produce, coffee, nuts, jams and chutneys, and more.

Kay Kelloway with long-time staffer Ronan Neville at Pomona’s Little Pantry

She has been very fortunate during the COVID months, and places a lot of importance on cooperation between local businesses. “This is a pretty little town, with a great atmosphere,” Kay said. “Shops support each other; they need to. I don’t go out of town to buy my ink cartridges - I buy them from the local newsagency. “If shops start closing it continues down the line.

“Jason from Cooloola Berries will be appearing in front of the shop on September 9 preparing a strawberry dessert and talking about Slow Food Noosa.” Kay’s business is a member of Slow Food Noosa, which promotes foodbased businesses that shun modern-day techniques where quality is compromised. Live music will be provided by The Vibe on the day, so be sure to diarise this event for Thursday, September 9.

Single-use plastic items and expanded polystyrene products banned from September 1 MEMBER for Nicklin, Rob Skelton MP is reminding businesses and not-forprofit organisations on the Sunshine Coast to prepare for Queensland’s ban on single-use plastic straws, stirrers, plates, bowls, cutlery, and expanded polystyrene takeaway food containers and cups, which comes into effect on September 1. “Single-use plastic items, such as a straws, are often only used for a very short period of time before they are discarded. More than 7,300 plastic straws were

collected at the last Clean Up Australia Day, which is double the number of straws collected two years ago,” Mr Skelton said. Continuing to supply banned items after September 1, could result in a business or not-for-profit organisation being fined 50 penalty points. “I congratulate all the businesses and not-for-profit organisations in Nicklin which have moved away from providing single-use plastic items and expanded polystyrene products already.”

More information, including photographs of banned items, along with those that are not banned can be found on the Department of Environment and Science website www.qld. gov.au/plasticsban

4WD needs now met in Cooroy WHEN Tony Bancroft established Cooroy Automotive eight years ago, the focus was primarily on cars, but with massive growth in the 4WD market, Tony has expanded the business to cater for all your 4WD needs. “We started the four-wheel-drive business at the beginning of this year and it has just taken off,” he said. “There’s a huge after-market for fourwheel-drives – from young drivers who enjoy modifying their trucks, to families on the move and grey nomads. We supply lift kits, snorkels, dual batteries and everything you could possibly need to get your vehicle ready for towing, or serious off-roading!” Now both car and 4WD owners alike can enjoy the great service on offer at Cooroy Automotive. “We really are now a one-stop shop for all things tyre and mechanical, said Tony, offering new tyres, roadworthy certificates, mechanical repairs and servicing all at the one place. And no job is too small for Tony and his team. If you get a puncture, give us a call! It’s a family business. Tony’s son Bill is part of the team, which is comprised almost completely of locals who went to Noosa District High School. “Another son did his apprenticeship here;

he’s gone on to start his own business doing keys and immobilisers,” Tony said. Future plans may include putting a mobile service van on the road “in a year or so”, Tony said, but he will bed down the still-new 4WD business first. The steady business growth has seen Cooroy Automotive and Cooroy Tyre and 4WD able to take on two more apprentices. Tony reckons being based in Jarrah St is a real bonus. “All the businesses here are doing well. The whole street is busy,” he said. Keep an eye out for their signs on the first and fourth tees at Cooroy Golf Club, where they are keen sponsors. “We’ve got a sign on the putting green, we sponsor the first tee, and we also have a big sign on fourth tee,” Tony said. “It’s important to us, to put money back into our local community, and it gives us a little exposure too. “It’s a great golf club – always full.” Needless to say, Tony’s a keen golfer – but what’s his handicap? “Too much,” he quipped. Pop in and see Tony and his team at Cooroy Automotive in Jarrah Street, for all your Car, 4WD and tyre needs. 1/23 Jarrah Street, Cooroy. Phone 5442 5099

M E L I S S A’ S ‘ E L L E ’ O F A M O M E N T I N 3 0 Y E A R S WHEN Melissa Pearce started Cooroy Hair Designs in the town’s Maple Street 30 years ago, the library opposite was a fire station and the IGA was on the corner where Cooroy Harvest Fresh now is. “[And] I remember there was a horse hitching rail just up the street,” Melissa said. “The police station and the post office are probably the most original buildings [since then].” Melissa will celebrate the 30th anniversary of her business on September 17 – which is clearly still successful, as she is constantly booked out two weeks ahead. “I trained as an apprentice hairdresser when I was 15, in Tewantin,” she said. Now ‘a little more mature’, Melissa said the changes in hairdressing since are enormous. “Especially with colours: we use ammonia-free products, and everyone’s a bit greener now, everything’s recyclable,” she said. She initially started the business with a business partner who had four children, so she bought the share out. “I apprenticed my mum – it’s usually the other way round – she stayed with me parttime until about four years ago.”

“Sarah’s now working with me – she’s awesome – she’s bubbly, very motivated and she’s really good with colours. We bounce [well] off each other.” Clearly Sarah agrees, saying “She’s the best boss I’ve ever had and a delight to work with”. Many of Melissa’s clientele go back a long way – one or two back to the beginning, 30 years ago. “I’ve had families where I’ve done mum dad and the children; now their children come in,” she said. “It’s a good town, it’s grown a lot with different types of people, but it has still got a good village feel, the people are friendly. ”It’s just me and Sarah,” Melissa said. “I’m looking for a third – experienced hairdresser. “The business is still growing, we’re full all the time, and booked out two weeks in advance.”

Activities Timetable

One memorable occasion was when a young boy ran down the street and through Melissa’s door. “His mum came in to get him – and it was Elle Macpherson. “We’d had a guy come in [that day] and I was cutting his hair, and he fell asleep – some customers do – so I left him there. “When I told him he’d slept through Elle Macpherson being in, he wouldn’t believe me.”

Melissa Pearce ... 30 year s and going stron g As for the September 17 anniversary, unlike previous celebrations Melissa is going low-key. “In the past I’ve put on parties but this year going to be all about me,” she said. “I’ll get a nice bottle of Veuve, some cheese and bikkies, and kick back with Sarah.”

Your Local #3: RAILWAY HOTEL, Imbil Hotel “WHEN you come to the country you expect a country feed.” That’s the view of Steve Hooper, whose family has operated Imbil’s Railway Hotel for the last 35 years. He should know. While the pub has been leased out from time to time, it has always come back to the family – and Steve’s here to stay this time, he says, after his management stints from 1999-2004 and 2019 until now. The Railway has been there since 1916 – even if there’s no railway anymore. “There were a few shops – and the railway station was first,” Steve says, “but the train only goes to Amamoor now.” “We get mainly the drive market here – weekenders, camping – the main industry here is camping,” Steve says. “It’s cheap entertainment, good for the kids. “And we get bike runs, variety bashes. It’s a big tourist town on the weekends, with the markets across the road. “It’s usually busy all week, with people camping at the Showgrounds; it’s about $10 a night, they get a shower there then come up here for dinner.”

The Imbil Hotel 1920’s The hotel has five rooms for accommodation, too. It’s obviously a gathering place for the locals, too, “especially when there’s a local funeral”, Steve says. Steve isn’t sold on the trendy idea of an extensive a la carte menu at the Railway. “We keep our menu family-style. Some of these flash places, 90 percent of people don’t understand what the items are – and they won’t buy them.

“That’s one thing I learned from (celebrity chef ) Gordon Ramsay - don’t complicate your menu.” “We have a country feel, and it’s working.” The pub menu is extensive, with chicken parmis to steaks, pizzas, seafood, burgers and snacks – all the regulars - and that’s the way the punters like it. That said, Steve has been renovating the kitchen, even hiring a demountable one during the process, and has big plans

to demolish an old building out back and build a brand-new bistro and beer garden area – with likely the same menu. “We’ll have it built within two years,” he said. “It’s a big job – it will take up most of the rear of the property.” The Railway Hotel is at 110 Yabba Creek Rd, Imbil, on 5484 5202, also on Facebook.

YOUR SEASONAL PRODUCE WATCH with Matt Golinski

THE humble cauliflower is a member of the brassica family of plants, which includes broccoli, cabbages, kale, choy sum and bok choy, all of which are flourishing at this time of year. Probably the most versatile member of the species - cauliflower can be eaten raw, pickled, roasted, steamed, pureed, stir fried, curried, even grated and used as a low-carb gluten free version of cous cous. It adds great texture to dishes and its relatively mild flavour mixes well with lots of other ingredients. Look for pure white, compact heads that feel heavy for their size. To get the best bang for your buck, use the leaves and the stem in your meals as well. I’m a big fan of roasted cauliflower as part of a mix of roasted vegetables, but while it’s still a bit cool at night, it’s a great time to try this cauliflower au gratin, made all the more decadent with the addition of Woombye Ash Brie melted all over the top. I keep the stale end bits of my sourdough in the freezer for this sort of application. It’s a good way to avoid wasting bread. This is a pretty satisfying meal on its own served with a leafy green salad, but would make a great accompaniment to roast chicken, beef or lamb.

Cauliflower C A U L I F L O W E R A U G R AT I N W I T H W O O M B Y E ASH BRIE AND SOURDOUGH CRUMBS INGREDIENTS: • 1 whole head of cauliflower (about 1kg), broken into florets • 750ml milk • 60g butter • 60g flour • 1tbs Dijon mustard • 50g Parmesan, grated • Salt and pepper • 125g (½ block) Woombye Ash Brie • 100g sourdough, roughly torn • 1tsp fresh thyme or rosemary

METHOD: 1. Blanch the cauliflower in a large saucepan of salted boiling water for 3 minutes, then drain in a colander. 2. Heat milk in a small saucepan until it is almost boiling. 3. In another saucepan, melt the butter, add the flour and stir over the heat for 1 minute. 4. Slowly stir in the milk, a bit at a time, allowing the sauce to thicken each time before adding more. 5. Once all the milk has been added, bring to the boil for a few seconds, remove from heat, stir in the mustard and half of the Parmesan, season with salt and white pepper.

6. Mix the sauce through the cauliflower and spoon into a baking tray or casserole dish, pressing down to form an even layer. 7. Tear the brie into 1 cm pieces (this is easier if you pop it in the freezer for an hour before you do it so it’s nice and firm) and mix with the torn sourdough and the remaining Parmesan. Spread in an even layer on top of the cauliflower and bake for 25-30 minutes at 180°C. 8. Sprinkle over the fresh herbs and serve hot straight from the oven.

WELCOME to Spring!! Longer and warmer days, as well as some potential sneezing from those amazing blooms? Where to start! This month we went into lockdown which was seriously hard for our businesses and community. staff and our community. Our advocacies on several issues to the QLD Small Business Commissioner and the Premier saw both good and not so good news. Welcomed were the COVID-19 Business Support Grants - including for sole traders - and progress on insurances. However there are still ‘gaps’ which we have gone back to Minister Farmer with CC’s to the Premier and Treasurer on businesses ineligible for current funding support. Thank you to all who that have assisted in this advocacy. As reported previously, Government has allocated funding in this year’s Budget towards community transport to address the gaps we had identified and advocated about. The new Community Transport Program supports residents who are not eligible for other subsidisation to access medical appointments, with information at www.chde.qld.gov.au/about/initiatives/ community-transport-program. Should any of the existing subsidies, extended PTSS mapping or this new program not assist, we shall continue our pilot ‘Be: Noosa Connect-SCUH Transport’ until we have ascertained that no one else remains stranded in the system. Since the last column, I haven’t had the opportunity to congratulate over 100 brave souls who tackled Mount Cooroora for Pomona’s King of the Mountain 2021,

SEPTEMBER school holidays are just a few weeks away, and I’d like to thank all the teachers in Noosa communities who have worked hard this term, particularly throughout the challenges posed by the recent local lockdown, to ensure their students continue to get the best possible education. School holidays are traditionally a busy time on our roads as more people head to Noosa, Teewah, Rainbow Beach and other coastal areas of our beautiful region. Whether you’re travelling as well, or staying close to home, I encourage all road users to be patient, to be mindful of road and weather conditions, avoid distractions, follow the speed limit and wear a

Koala protection on the Sunshine Coast and surrounds has received a huge boost with the Palaszczuk Government committing $5 million to maintain koala fencing across the region. Safeguarding koala populations is important, particularly during the current breeding season. We want to continue creating safer habitats for koalas and have listened to the community. Koalas seeking mates tend to move around more during breeding season, so having well maintained fencing is so important to keep them off the roads and away from cars. C L A R E ST E WA R T WELL as we continue to be impacted by COVID Council has introduced a raft of relief measures to ease the community impact around the uncertainties of COVID We’ve extended the rates discount to 17 September 2021 and rates can now be deferred until the end of December 2021 on request. We’ve deferred outstanding health licence renewals and footpath dining permits until the end of December. These initial measures will allow ratepayers to pay their increased rates based on an amount that suits their individual circumstances without incurring any penalty interest. To support businesses further, our business roundtable formed here at Council has successfully lobbied the State Government for a covid-19 cleaning rebate in a win for local businesses. Sub-committee member and Interim Noosa Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Ralph Rogers flagged the idea of urgent funding for COVID deep cleans and I had the opportunity to lobby the Treasurer Cameron Dick during a Zoom meeting last Friday with other SEQ mayors about the idea. It’s fantastic that the initiative was well received by the Treasurer and other mayors. In other news, our Hinterland Playground is well under way. The creek waterplay area with timber bridge crossings and pathways that connect active play

areas is under construction. Major play equipment is being built offsite and in September we are set to start work on 34 new car parking spaces on Maple Street, plus 22 overflow parking spaces near the Cooroy tennis courts. As well, Maple Street is set to get a new raised pedestrian crossing between Apex Park and Cooroy Library. During the construction of the pedestrian crossing, we will need to close a section of Maple Street between the library and Mary River Road Bridge with diversions in place for around three weeks. We appreciate your patience. Finally, hinterland roads feature in the list of roads we’re resealing as part of this year’s reseal program. We’ll be heading to Pomona with the reseal program soon. Streets set for resealing include Ambulance St, Belwood Pl, Pioneer Road, Pottery St, School St, and Smedley Dr. It’s all systems go in the Hinterland. Until next month, stay safe, Clare.

These are exciting times for the areas of the Sunshine Coast and Noosa, as we look forward to the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games on home soil. I convened a meeting of community leaders to discuss the formation of a local Olympic Taskforce recently, with the aim of tapping into the collective brilliance of our region. My aim is to develop ways that we can maximise the benefit to the entire Coast in the lead up to the Games, and well beyond. It is all about working together in pursuit of a shared vision for the future. Olympians, business identities, political representatives from all three tiers of government, and leaders from community and sports groups workshopped ideas at the Maroochy RSL on how we can extract the maximum benefit from the Games. With this collaborative approach, we can all be winners on the journey to 2032.

I was deeply disturbed to see the heartbreaking images from Afghanistan, and the capital Kabul, as the Taliban took control. The swiftness of the takeover and the chaos it caused stunned many observers across the world. I wish to pay tribute to the men and women of the Australian Defence Force for their service during the 20-year conflict. These are difficult times for our veterans, and many vulnerable people in Afghanistan. The members of our Defence Force put themselves in harm’s way to protect our freedoms, our way of life and people in need. No matter what your view might be on this tragic conclusion to the campaign of the West in Afghanistan, let us all unite in honouring the fine members of the ADF.

M E E T N I C K Y & ‘ D O W H AT M AT T E R S’ NICKY Mih, Sunshine Coast based author of Do What Matters has a background in psychology, teaching and coaching. But now, she’s a woman on a mission – to prevent children being trafficked into the commercial sex industry, a mission set for her by survivors themselves after she spent a month with them nine years ago. “I saw terror in the eyes of girls who had just been rescued, I met survivors who had been tortured, I met survivors who were rebuilding their lives. It changed me. It taught me that you can love in an instant. It taught me what real strength was. And it taught me to spend my time doing something that really mattered.” Nicky asked these survivors what they wanted and how we could help. They wanted to end sex slavery. They explained that when girls are rescued from brothels the traffickers don’t go without girls, they just go out into the rural villages and take a new young girl. They wanted these girls to be protected. Not one of the girls Nicky met had been in school when they were trafficked. They believed that if they were in school, they wouldn’t have been trafficked. If they were in school, they would have been safe. These survivors had identified a gap. There were organisations collaborating with the police on rescue operations,

there were aftercare centres and there were legal teams working in the justice system to bring about prosecutions. But Nicky couldn’t find an organisation out in these rural villages specifically identifying these girls before the traffickers did. And so was born Free To Shine, a child protection organisation preventing children being trafficked. Do What Matters, is a book about courage and achieving the seemingly impossible. It is for people who are ready to step up in their life. Come and meet Nicky Mih at her book signing at Berkelouw Book Barn, Eumundi. Wednesday September 22, 9-11am.

Embellish Me Beautiful

DARWIN, in the summer of 1963, is hot and heavy with humidity. It’s still a frontier town, full of people hoping for a new start - people with things to hide. It’s also a town full of secrets, racism, violence and corruption. It’s against this backdrop that we meet Ned, an idealistic policeman, married with a young baby. While out fishing in the wetlands, Ned stumbles across two men who have just discovered a dead body lying face down in the shallow edge of the swamp. The man, Ernie has met a very violent end, beaten and shot twice. When Ned’s boss, Senior Sargent Riley takes over the case and subsequently declares Ernie’s death a suicide, it doesn’t sit well with Ned who, despite being warned off the case, starts to do a bit of investigating. It is when Ned discovers two more bodies in the swamp that the investigation, and Ned’s life, starts to spiral out of control. Ned is torn between his need to see justice, and his need to protect his family, and he faces a difficult battle between his head and his heart, finally turning to drink when it all becomes too much. In Still, writer Matt Nable paints a vivid picture of a semi-lawless society, where the life of an Aboriginal is worth little and the whites who are sympathetic are viewed with suspicion. It is difficult reading in our current times but seems particularly realistic. The language is harsh, the characters are uncompromising, and the landscape is unforgiving. Still is a fast paced and suspenseful Australian Novel.

CROSSING to the other side of the world, and a no-less inhospitable landscape Jeanine Cummins’ latest novel American Dirt tells the story of a bookstore owner, Lydia and her young son, Luca who are forced to flee from their middle-class existence in Acapulco and partake in the perilous journey north through Mexico and into the United States. The novel is shocking, but very matter of fact in its depictions of the extent of the violence and misery in Mexico and other parts of Central and South America that is forcing people to flee from their homes and try to illegally cross the border. From the descriptions of the vast goods trains that the locals call La Bestia, and the many people who attempt to climb aboard and ride the train to the border, to the satellite clusters of assistance groups established along the route to help the migrants on their journeys, to the sheer terror of trying to escape the corrupt and ruthless local immigration agents who are ostensibly there to round up the migrants and send them home, but who are often working for the drug cartels and who can be more dangerous that whatever it is that the migrants are trying to escape, this book will keep you on the edge of your seat with your fingers crossed for a safe and successful outcome. FLOATING Land Biennale, returns to Noosa this October. This year, Australia’s premier art-inthe-environment project draws on Noosa’s international reputation as a community and destination focused on caring for, and engaging with, the natural environment. The 16-day event will feature 30 curated projects across two key sites – Boreen Point and the Park Road Boardwalk at Noosa Heads. Installed along the foreshore of Queensland’s natural saltwater lake, Lake Cootharaba, a trail of contemporary art pieces will guide visitors on a journey of quiet reflection. While the projects presented this year will bear a light touch and fleeting presence in the natural environment, says Noosa Regional Gallery Director and Biennale Curator Michael Brennan, their brief

occupation is intended to thoughtfully provoke the audience. Using art to provide an opportunity for audiences to engage in conversation about the environment, Floating Land: at the edge of ideas will include an abundance of site-responsive projects, tours, artist-led workshops, symposium, performances and unique opportunities for visitors. Featuring local, national and international artists at varying stages of their professional careers, Floating Land: at the edge of ideas will run from October 9 to 24. For full details of the artistic program and associated events, please visit floatingland.org.au Floating Land: at the edge of ideas will launch with a FREE community event at Boreen Point on Saturday October 9, from 3-6pm. All welcome.

ARTS

On a knife’s edge

NOOSA hinterland can boast its fair share of artisans, and high up on Black Mountain you will find a studio called Crocodile Creek Knives, which will feature in this year’s Noosa Open Studios Art Trail. Knife-maker Geoff Cook’s studio is filled with ‘blokey’, heavy looking machinery, and of course a forge he uses when handcrafting his unique knives. Geoff majored in Knife Making from

RMIT (Melbourne) - and feels very privileged as the course is no longer on offer. Starting out in his uncle’s jewellery store aged 12, he was hand-making wedding rings. He became fascinated by all things metal, knives in particular, growing into a passion for “one-off, no two are the same” knives. Whether a chef- or humble pocket-knife, each is painstakingly made to be functional and beautiful in design and simplicity. “Every knife not only has artistry and beauty, each one has its own soul,” Geoff said. The first blade was forged in 400BC in Belgium. It starts with the selection of two

types of high-carbon steel. Layer upon layer, 63 in total, are fusion-welded, heat treated, forged then beaten under a power hammer. Then it’s more heat to de-stress the steel, resulting in a blade that will ultimately hold a razor-sharp edge. Geoff uses African ebony, Queensland blood gum, black bean timber, or Australian staghorn for handles, also Australian agate and opals from Lightning Ridge - all designed to last a lifetime or more. The 20-stage process can take Geoff up to 25 hours of work per knife. Once completed, he handcrafts its leather or timber sheath. If ‘Zen’ can be found in artistic endeavours, Geoff will find it in the fire of his forge, in the beating of his hammer, in the shriek of his grinder, the squeal of his belt sander and the rhythm and pace of the sharpening. Geoff has held numerous exhibitions over the years and is participating in the Noosa Open Studios Art Trail again this year. Last year he had 400 visitors to his studio. This year’s Art Trail dates are October 1, 2 and 3, and October 8, 9, and 10. Geoff can also be contacted for private appointments on 0418 156 357.

C O L O U R Y O U R W O R L D , B O L D LY IT TAKES a keen eye to witness the subtle changes in light, shadow and hue as the seasons change across the Noosa hinterland. Artist of 24 years Amanda Brooks has that eye, and much more, as evidenced in her vast body of works produced during these years. Amanda will be participating in the upcoming Noosa Open Studios Art Trail event running from October 1 – 10. Take a plain painted wall and put a vibrant Brooks painting of an Australian animal or landscape and the room transforms in a warm, welcoming way. That’s why her works can be found in homes and businesses across the nation, as well as in private collections in South-East Asia, Europe and the United States. “My observations of nature are displayed in the way I approach my contemporary landscapes, bold florals, birds, animals and portraiture,” Amanda said. “When one is in touch with nature, no season passes unnoticed.” Amanda was born into a family of artists and musicians. “I started as a graphic designer, and moved on to become a teacher of painting,” she said.

“That start has given me a discipline and lifelikeness, and attention to detail.” Amanda is always in demand by renovators, home decorators and designers who regard art as part of a home’s foundations rather than an afterthought. “It’s the warmth the paintings bring to people’s homes and lives that attract buyers,” she said. Such has been the demand, Amanda’s husband Jason has become a business partner, as well as getting involved in the raising of their children Coco, Jasper and Indigo. “He joined me when we launched our brand-new online store including prints and a homewares range seven years ago. “He takes care of all the behindthe-scenes business of running our full-time online store, doing all the limited-edition prints, packaging and accounts. “I take care of the marketing side: styling, website, customer care, photography, gift range and artworks. “In order to be as prolific and productive I needed someone to be able to help with everything, so I had time to paint.”

One of the hardest working blues and roots bands in Australia, originating from the Gold Coast in Queensland, Mason Rack Band is not afraid to break all the musical genre rules. Known for a swampy blues / rock sound the band influences include flashes of Tom Waits, Jimi Hendrix, Tex Perkins, Jeff Buckley and Muddy Waters with roots extending to Ben Harper. Throw in a slide guitar, raspy vocals, a rocking bluesy bass, massive drum percussion and the result is a spectacular kaleidoscope of musical genres. The popular three piece is renowned for their amazing live stage performances.

Seeing your life from a spiritual perspective MEDITATION Master Don Victor Ferdinando, introduces meditations and other spiritual tools including Vedic Astrology and Nadi Astrology from his Siddha lineage to help understand life in a very broad way to solve your problems. Vedic Astrology and Nadi Astrology are two powerful tools used by the enlightened masters to navigate through life and give insight to challenges and prescribes remedies to change our life to have better outcomes. V E D I C A ST R O LO GY

This ancient Indian science that shows how the planets and star clusters effect humans and all living things and how their changes and movements influence our day to day life is a tool used by the enlightened Siddha masters to guide people. Evaluating and predicting your life circumstances in many areas including health, relationships, finances and enlightenment gives a person a clear sense of purpose, highlighting our strengths and weaknesses and gives suggestions on how to improve our life from a very non-rational perspective. Vedic Astrology provides a unique combination of information about a person’s life in 12 detailed sections. This is based on a person’s exact time and date of birth, location and takes into account 27 star clusters and 9 planetary

positions at the particular time of birth that makes up a person’s individual destiny. Your birth chart is a powerful blueprint about your life - past, present and future. It reveals your life purpose, how your mind works, your birth-star details, and which planets influence all areas of your life. N A D I A ST R O LO GY

Nadi Astrology is an ancient super science that goes even beyond Vedic Astrology. It sheds light on the journey of your soul and helps you understand your past, present, and future and why certain challenges are presented in a persons life and how to overcome them through spiritual methodologies. Also known as Nadi Jyotish, this is the Science of Thumbprints and the mystical in nature. The great sages of India have etched our destinies on palm leaves as divine predictions. Their sight into the future showed them the difficulties that would prevail in modern times. This mystical science from our ancient seers, not only gives predictions about your life but also remedies to dissolve your karma (difficulties) and course correct your life in the right direction to have more peace and prosperity. Get moving with Council’s free Adults Come ‘n’ Try program

COUNCIL’S Adults Come ‘n’ Try sports program is back and will be rolling out again across Noosa through September. No matter who you are, locals will have the chance to sample a range of sports for free in a program that has something for everyone. The program includes a range of sports clubs, organisations and suppliers across the region who are opening their doors, classes and fields to local adults who want to sample different activities for the first time. Building on the success of last year’s program, Adults Come ‘n’ Try offers the opportunity to reconnect with an old sport or activity with a number of local gyms and keep-fit studios right across the shire who are keen to keep Noosa moving. Ideal for those who have always wanted

to try a particular sport such as a gym class, surfing, or cricket and have never had the support or motivation to do so, the jampacked timetable features a vast range of sports with fast-growing activities such as pickleball on the schedule. Locals can also try their hand at beach yoga, high energy dance, surfing, tennis, table tennis, Pilates, meditation and much more. The program runs from August 30 to September 12. Registration is now open and bookings are essential. Activities are limited to one visit per person for each free activity. To stay COVID-safe, participants are requested to liaise with each provider for availability and confirm their place. See full timetable on p 21. SPRING TO IT! with Erin Yarwood IF you felt that your fitness regime may have slipped a little by the wayside during the cooler months, rest assured that you’ll begin to feel like ramping things up again real soon! As the days begin to lengthen and the temperature starts rising again, you’ll be getting that spring back in your step in no time. Get ready to get rid of your trackie dacks, exchanging them for denim shorts and boardies. With more activity on the agenda and lighter, refreshing, generally healthier food options hitting your plate, you will be bouncing out of your skin and feeling brand new before you know it!! Need a little of motivation to help push you in the right direction?? Here’s a few tips to help you out… PLAN AHEAD

It’s great to want to start something or get moving, but sometimes writing things down and putting a plan and timeframe in place can make all the difference in actually making something happen. L I F T YO U R M O O D

I think we’ll all agree that it’s a weird and wonderful time at the moment. And with all that is going on in the world, sometimes we can feel a bit down or rather stressed. Sometimes without even realising

it. Make sure that you try not to let things get to you too much and focus on all of the good things happening around you. And remember, a perfect mood booster is movement! And it can also help to simply take your mind off things. Plus the endorphin rush after makes it all worth it! M E D I TAT E

Another great way to de-stress, relax and motivate is meditation. And it doesn’t have to be anything fancy. Just taking some time out to quiet your mind and simply focus on

your local guide B E AUTY SAL ON

your breathing can be all it takes. Or there are many wonderful local outlets where you can book into a class or attend a gathering. Even something like doing laps or going for a jog can be a form of meditation too. B U Y YO U R S E L F A N E W O U T F I T

You don’t have to go crazy or spend a fortune. But hey, who doesn’t feel good in a new outfit? Especially as the seasons change. Gain some confidence and feel good about yourself ! You deserve it.

SUGAR SUGAR SUGAR IT’S the million dollar question. How can something that tastes so good be so bad for you? Sugar has been coping a bad wrap for years, so lets take a closer look. There are four sugar groups • Glucose - main sugar found in your body produced by the food you eat and the prime source of energy that fuels your body. • Fructose – sugar in fruit • Sucrose - table sugar • Lactose – sugar in milk and dairy. These are what we call natural sugars and are the least harmful. That is of course if you aren’t lactose intolerant or have a reaction to fructose. It is the processed sugars that pose the greatest danger to our health. Consuming excessive amounts of processed sugars causes a flood of insulin in our blood stream, damaging arteries. Once the walls of the arteries are damaged the heart

struggles to pump blood through the circulatory system. It is not uncommon for the heart to become overloaded causing heart failure or heart attacks. Processed sugars are proven to be linked with obesity, heart disease, CVD’s (cardio vascular disease), and even depression. What about artificial sweeteners, such as aspartame or saccharin? Well unfortunately the jury is still out in regard to the effects that they may have, but mounting evidence suggests that they could be linked to high blood sugar, poor gut bacteria and obesity by stimulating the appetite. Granted sugar is not a health food, but it is not the insidious poison it is often made out to be. Although most of us could stand to consume less of it, it is perfectly fine to enjoy a little bit. Indulge without guilt and remember, moderation is the key. www.foodtrition.com.au

Itchy, scratchy BEDBUGS!

BEDBUGS are small, wingless insects found all over the world. They are a nocturnal parasite, which means they rest during the day and are active at night. However, bedbugs are opportunistic and will bite in the day, especially if starved for some time. They feed on the blood of humans and prefer to hide in bedding and on mattresses where they have ready access to a source of food. Although bedbugs can harbour diseases in their own bodies, transmission to humans is highly unlikely and there is no evidence for transmission of disease. They are not dangerous, unless a person is allergic to them. Please note their presence is not an indicator of poor hygiene! WHERE DO BED BUGS LIKE TO HIDE?

• Mattresses, particularly along the seams • Bedding such as sheets and blankets • Between the cracks of wooden floors • Wall cracks or crevices • Carpet • Furniture, particularly in seams and cracks • Luggage and clothing W H AT D O T H E Y LO O K L I K E ?

Bed bugs can be detected visually, especially in the later stages of their life cycle when they can be over 5mm long. Small blood stains on mattresses are also another clear visual indicator of infestation; you may sometimes even be able to observe their “exoskeletons” after moulting. body) which may result in small areas of swelling and itching of the skin. When bed bugs bite, they inject an anaesthetic (so you do not wake up from your sleep) and an anticoagulant (to make the blood thinner and feeding easier). Most people will not even realise they have been bitten until marks appear from one to several days after the initial bite. It can be difficult to distinguish bedbug bites from other insect bites. In general, the sites of bedbug bites usually are red, sometimes with a darker red spot in the middle, itchy, arranged in a rough line or in a cluster and located on the face, neck, arms, legs and hands. T R E AT M E N T O P T I O N S

Bed bugs bites do not usually pose a serious medical threat. The best treatment for a bite is to avoid scratching the area along with the use of these over-thecounter products found in your pharmacy: • Antihistamine Tablets • Hydrocortisone Cream • Antiseptic cream • Soap-free washes • Ice Packs and repellents M A N AG E M E N T A N D P R E V E N T I O N

Avoidance of infested areas is the method for prevention of bed bug bites. Proper treatment of affected rooms is the best way to prevent bed bugs in the home. Tuck your sheets in around you at night or wear clothes to bed! Remove mattresses from bed frames to complete a thorough check of the bedroom. Infested areas including all possible hiding places should then be treated with an appropriate insecticide. Vacuum the infested area thoroughly. Mattresses should be sealed in dark plastic and left outside in the hot sun. All clothes and bedding suspected of being infested should be washed in hot water (at least 60 degrees Celsius) and/or heated ironing or drying. Delicate materials can be placed into the freezer. The best way to prevent bed bugs is regular inspection for the signs of an infestation!

Noosa National Park WELL Spring is here and there’s no better time to visit Noosa National Park. This very popular spot most of you may have already visited, but there is so much more to offer than just walking to Hell’s Gate. I highly recommend the walk through to Sunshine Beach (track 4), and returning on Tanglewood Walk (track 2), to the back of the National park picnic area. Once you get to Hells Gate you continue walking along Alexandria Bay to Lion Rock. There there are a couple of beautiful little inlets that you wish you could spend the day hidden away in. The views are amazing from Sunshine Beach looking all the way to Coolum. If you are adventurous enough there are the Paradise Caves to explore at Sunshine beach and lovely little rock pools to cool off in. Please allow yourself plenty of time for this walk as you will be stopping so much along the way taking in the magnificent views. This walk is approximately 12kms, about five to six hours return from the National Park entrance. This time of year if you’re lucky you might get to see one of over 33,000 Humpback Whales on their migration to the warmer waters of the Great Barrier Reef escaping the chilly waters of the Antarctica. Also enjoy our beautiful dolphin pods, the turtles at Hells Gate, abundant bird life and beautiful flowers and wattles along the way. This walk is suitable for everyone but if you don’t want to do the 12km give track 2 (Tanglewood Walk) a go. On this part of the track you may be lucky enough to spot a Koala, I’ve see them on the ground and up in the trees. If you see any Koala’s please let the information centre know, so you can share your experience with others. There are also electric BBQ’s, toilets, drinking water, showers, but limited parking and with wheelchair access to Tea Tree Bay. Don’t forget your back pack for this one, as you may like to take a dip in the blue water’s so you’ll need a towel, sunscreen,

hat, snacks or picnic lunch and plenty of water. Also be careful where you park due to four hour limits, I suggest at the end of Hasting Street/ Noosa Spit Recreation Park. This is going to add another 2km to your walk. There is also the public bus, stopping at Noosa Parade. TransLink and Noosa Council offer a free service in peak times so please check their web page for

timetables. An early start is advisable, FYI the sun rise is amazing. We would love to hear any feedback on my walk’s, including photos so send an email to hello@yourlocallifestyle.com.au. We would love to include them in future articles. Happy Hiking, Andrea Taylor

Cooran leads race to zero emissions

H OW TO STAY S A F E D U R I N G M AG P I E SWO O P I N G S E A S O N MAGPIE breeding season has begun across the Sunshine Coast and residents are asked to remain tolerant of this protected and iconic native animal when walking or riding near Magpie nests. Sunshine Coast Council Natural Areas Conservation Officer Tyron de Kauwe said magpies were very clever, remembering faces in their neighbourhood. “Magpies are pretty amazing birds and in fact only 10 per cent of breeding males will actually swoop,” Mr de Kauwe said. “Magpies will often stay in one area for up to 20 years. “When they walk around with their head tilted, they are actually listening for prey and are capable of hearing earthworms and larvae moving underground. Mr de Kauwe offered the following tips on staying safe during swooping season. “Swooping begins once the eggs are hatched and ends once the chicks have left the nest, which is about six to eight weeks,” he said. “When you see male magpies defending their territory, understand they are merely defending their young. “Move quickly through the area but do not run. Wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses or use an umbrella. Dismount and walk your bike and where possible, walk in groups – or avoid the area altogether. “Don’t act aggressively towards them as they have a very long memory, and this will just encourage further defensive behaviour in the future. “Most importantly though, take a moment to appreciate the complex carolling of one of Australia’s most iconic birds—our humble magpie.”

ZERO Emission Noosa(ZEN) has been tracking how different postcode localities are moving towards the goal of zero community emissions for Noosa by 2026, and in this article we focus on the village of Cooran which makes up postcode 4569. The name Cooran is derived from the Gubbi Gubbi word meaning ‘tall’ or ‘high up’ and is also a name they give to the Moreton Bay Ash tree. ZEN met up with Avid Marshall who is president of the Cooran Hall Committee to find out more about the town. Avid told us the hall is the oldest in the Noosa Shire being built in 1906, with the first meeting of the Noosa Council being held there in 1910. Whilst the official name is the Cooran Memorial School of Arts, Avid likes to transform it to ‘School of Hearts’. He says that best describes the context of the hall being the vibrant hub of the eclectic, inclusive community, featuring live music and theatre events, private functions, workshops, classes, community gatherings and more. Avid’s particularly passionate about the Cooran Acoustic Nights, which are held every six weeks, and have been running continuously for 32 years apart from a COVID enforced break last year. “It’s an institution, a supportive environment where we have a range of performers from seasoned professionals all the way through to people who are getting up on stage for the first time.” Avid’s also proud of the hall’s solar system and energy efficiency improvements.

The grant-funded solar system has been running for 10 years and they’ve never paid an electricity bill since, even though they now have air conditioning. All the lighting’s been switched to LED, and Avid’s pride and joy is the recently installed state of the art LED stage lighting. We also met with the folks from Cooran Earth Rights who are dedicated to protecting the local environment. Their crowning achievement has been the extinction of the coal and gas exploration lease following their amazing door-to-door survey which found 98% of locals wanted Cooran to be free from coal and gas field exploration. Noosa Council followed up with a similar declaration for the shire and with local member Sandy Bolton’s advocacy, the State Government decided not to renew the exploration permit. The group’s still active, last meeting chatting about the proposed bike path to Pomona, quarry traffic, green thumbs, community groups, plans to grow and networking within the community. Spokesperson Ann Gardiner proudly told us, “Cooran is currently generating 46% of its electricity from renewables. 56% of homes have rooftop solar and 42% of businesses. This is reducing our CO2 emissions and making Cooran a cleaner and greener place to live. Living in one of the sunniest parts of the world it makes sense to generate as much solar power as we can. It saves the consumer money and saves the planet emissions. Well done

Avid Marshall

Cooran - if we can keep up the steady pace of solar installations we will be on track for Zero Community Emissions by 2026.” Fellow Cooran Earth Rights member and local resident, June Norman, is equally passionate telling us, “I installed solar on my home nearly two years ago. Whilst it has reduced my power bill significantly my motivation is to reduce my carbon footprint so that I lessen my great grandchildren’s adverse experience of climate change. By my calculations the solar installation will pay for itself within four years. I’m very proud that Cooran is leading the Noosa region with the uptake of renewable energy.” Use your favourite search engine to find more about Cooran Acoustic Nights, the Cooran Hall and Cooran Earth Rights. Be a botanic Dad WHERE’S a good place to enjoy Fathers Day on Sunday, September 5? Noosa Botanic Gardens - that’s where. There’s a host of happenings at the gardens on that day, starting with a Bird Walk from 8-9am, where noted avian photographer Karl Granzien will identify some of the birdlife that calls the gardens home. From 10am to noon, you can head down to the poinciana trees near the Shade Garden to listen to the Noosa Orchestra Wind Quintet, a blend of flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and French horn, to send a soothing sound through the gardens. The Shade Garden itself will be open Sunday morning, as it is on the first Sunday of each month. The Botanic Gardens Friends have also

organised for a coffee van to be on hand to quench the thirsts, and you can bring a picnic down and grab one of the many little hideaway spots next to the lake to enjoy some good family time. And you can bring your dog - as long as it remains on a leash. Sunday, September 5, from 9am at Noosa Botanic Gardens at Lake MacDonald, only 4km along Lake MacDonald Dr from Cooroy.

Meanwhile, the Friends of the Botanic Gardens are excited they have received $500 in a community grant, which is to be the first step towards providing an electric golf buggy for people with mobility issues, to enjoy the gardens.

WITH the weather soon to warm up, it’s a reminder that August is the official start of the upcoming bushfire and storm season. Are you ready? We’ve all experienced how quickly weather events can develop and threaten homes and lives, so Noosa Council is working closely with hinterland communities to raise awareness of the need to be prepared. In partnership with Pomona Community House, council is offering residents in the hinterland communities information sessions to assist with disaster preparedness and building resilience leading into the bushfire and storm season. Understanding local disaster risks is vital for our communities. The sessions will provide an opportunity for the hinterland residents to talk to emergency services personally. The first of these is a Bushfire Information Night, being held on Tuesday, September 7 from 5.30-8.30pm at Cooran Hall. Topics covered will range from how to prepare your property for a bushfire, making an evacuation plan and plant and animal responses to fire. There will also be practical advice available from Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, Biodiversity Consortium and Noosa Council. Attendees are requested to register for this information night by contacting Pomona

Community House on 5485 2427. Mayor Clare Stewart said that disaster preparedness is a community effort which requires everyone to do their part. “We can all help protect our communities by taking responsibility for being prepared and supporting our neighbours to do the same. Inaction puts homes, neighbours and our emergency services workers at risk but if we all have a plan in place, it helps when natural disasters strike,” she shared. Additional Disaster and Hazard Preparedness Information Days will be held on: • September 10 and 11 - at the Noosa Show (Pomona Showgrounds) from 9am - 4pm. • September 18 - at IGA Pomona from 9am - 4pm. • September 24 - at The Lawson Shed, Pomona from 9am - 11:30am • October 1 - at Ridgewood Hall from 10am -1pm. Mountain Biking on the Sunny Coast “WHAT’S this mountain biking thing all about?” you may well be asking. Your significant other may be talking about spending your next holiday savings on a new bike, or your kids might be hounding you for a new full suspension. These bikes are mountain beasts that could potentially cost more than a small car. It’s not a fad - it’s here to stay and it can be lots of fun for the whole family. Mountain biking clubs and trail centres are popping up all over the place and related tourism is growing fast. On the Sunshine Coast alone we have five purpose-built trail centres plus kilometres of scenic fire roads and single trails suitable for beginner to advanced riders. Most have been professionally built and maintained with public and private funding plus many volunteer hours from local club members and advocates, and they are totally free for all to use. At the northern end of the coast, we have the Victory Heights Trail Centre in Gympie, Wooroi trails in Tewantin – and further south we have Parklands near Nambour, Sugarbag Road trails in Caloundra, and The Bone Yards and Ferny Forest near Landsborough.
