HE spent nearly 60 years with his wife Betty, whom he married in March 1962.

The pair had the same birthday – March 3 – albeit born one year apart, in 1938 (Harry) and 1939 respectively.

“We met on a blind date on the 20th of January, 1962,” Betty said.

“I didn’t like him when I first met him – I thought he was a show-off, and he was – [but] he was a larrikin.”

It was actually a double-date and a different young woman had been lined up in the foursome, rather than then-22-year-old Betty.

“They went to pick up the other girl, but her mum wouldn’t let her go, so I was second choice; they came to pick me up.

“But I was riding in a show the next day because I am an equestrian, and I didn’t want to go.

“But I went, and thought ‘what am I doing with this mob of idiots?’. Harry drove round a corner and hit a lamp-post – but he had not driven a car for over two years while he was in New Guinea. He’d been walking through the bush.”

Betty did warm to him as time went on.

“I noticed he was very courteous, and as time went on, we just got on like two old boots. We got to know each other, then he said ‘I’m going back to New Guinea – do you want to wait for me for two years?’.

“I said ‘In two years’ time I don’t know where I’ll be because I always wanted to travel’. He said ‘perhaps we should get married, as you weren’t allowed to go up to PNG if you’re not’.”

They took their vows in Harry’s NSW hometown of Berridale, following a mere six weeks’ courtship.

Harry was born in Gloucester and had spent a few years in Wollongong, his father being a health and safety inspector finally posted to the Snowy Hydro Scheme.

He had already spent six years in PNG after studying at the Australian School of Pacific Administration in Sydney, nudged by his father there after pulling out of a Sydney University scholarship to study medicine.

“He could bend a crowbar but I’m not sure what he’d do with a scalpel,” Betty quipped.

“He had a very good memory, almost photographic - he studied and always passed with top honours.”

Harry’s first post had been to assist communities near Mt Lamington in PNG’s north, where five years earlier the volcano had exploded, killing 3000 people, and his role was to help continue resettlement from the now-non-arable land to the plateaus.

A new young wife would have to carefully consider the remoteness and loneliness should she go to a strange new land, he said – but she was not without experience, having left her native Condobolin aged four to live “118 miles west of Bourke” when war broke out.

“It was 80,000 acres. I rode horses and spent time mustering with Dad,” Betty said.

“I did correspondence school but by 14 I was competing in equestrian events all round the south coast.”

Her mother became terminally ill, so the family moved closer to relatives near Cooma – and where she got work at the Snowy Hydro scheme, where Harry’s dad worked.

“I knew him, but never met Harry there.”

Betty began formal schooling, advancing an age grade every six months to finish at the same level as her age peers.

“My brothers had taught me to read and write, and my dad had taught me cribbage, also to count sheep; my mental arithmetic was phenomenal.”

The pair arrived in PNG, initially staying on an island containing “70 acres, a few goats and a parrot who knew many expletives,” Betty said.

But they were soon relocated to the mainland where Harry was responsible for building an airstrip, a wharf, roads and administrative buildings.

“Our house had a grass roof, where we lived until Harry built a bigger place on stilts, though still grass,” Betty said.

“It was lovely, very cool, and sat on the bank of a river.”

While in later years PNG became known for crime, Betty always felt safe.

“Harry went on patrol once, left me at home – and someone stole chops off the stove, but the local policeman was very good.

“Harry bought me a horse for my (our) birthday and it was brought there by ship – the locals had never seen one before.

“And when the boat came in, I’d load him up with the mail, take it round the villages, sleep overnight, safe as could be.

“I wouldn’t do it now, as it’s gone back to being a bit rough. [But then] patrol officers kept law and order.”

Harry didn’t like bookwork, doing orders and stores, Betty said.

“He hated filling out government forms, so I started doing that.

“Then when we moved to the next station above Wewak near the PNG border, the government office clerk went on leave then resigned, so I got the job, running the post office, the Commonwealth Bank

agency, working for the hotel – and ran an airline agency.

“Aitape was the HQ of the Franciscan Catholic Mission, and they were all doing trips to Rome, so it was quite lucrative.”

The pair became legends with all their community achievements throughout PNG and Bougainville since 1956 – even warranting a visit from the Queen and Prince Philip - but by 1975, time was up.

“They didn’t need us anymore,” Betty said.

“We had trained people into the positions.”

In his PNG time, Harry held numerous positions, including airstrip and road builder, commissioned officer, local and district magistrate, labour inspector, economic and political developer and local government advisor.

They had invested in 88 acres of land at Gumboil Rd, Lake Macdonald in 1971, and Betty was looking forward to living on it, with Harry to follow when his job would end in early 1976 – but firstly decided on a six-month overseas trip.

They saw plenty of Europe and Scandinavia, much of it driving a Mini Clubman Estate they’d bought in the Channel Island of Jersey - a place they would sow strong seeds of friendship in.

“We did 18,000 miles: it cost us one tyre, and £50 [loss] on the resale of the car,” Betty said.

While Harry finished up overseas, Betty had gone to Adelaide to visit friends – and bought two racehorses, then one more on the couple’s mutual birthday.

One of them never won a race, but another won eight.

“I went on to breed them, then [later] become a trainer; I was one of the first female trainers in the business around here.

“We won on the opening day of Corbould Park and we beat Russ Hinze’s horse, in a race called the Russ Hinze Stakes; he was not a happy man.

“A lot of Cooroy people had shares in them; I leased them out to Harry and five of his friends.”

When Harry returned, he took a job at Gympie Council, and eventually he was talked into running for councillor in Noosa, serving one term.

“Harry was not in favour of pensioners getting a rebate on their rates, while they were ‘driving around in Mercedes and Volvos’, but he thought young people should get a discount.

“The night before the [next] election every ratepayer got a letter saying Harry didn’t like pensioners getting a rates discount”, and he lost.

Betty was quietly pleased he didn’t get back in as the job had no salary, and she was keeping an income flowing by working evenings at Cooroy RSL as a waitress.

“We were strapped for cash at the time, but then the first horse I bred won $100,000 so that helped.

“But I was working my butt off, feeding horses, working at night, then the phone would go all night with ratepayers complaining.”

After council, Harry went into real estate, having previously dabbled in it, Betty said.

“Cooroy was growing then, so it earned us a bit of money. But when the horse won, we had money in the bank, so I started Town and Country Menswear in Cooroy and ran it for 12 years.

“But it got to the stage where I couldn’t stand for nine hours a day, and help was hard to get.”

Harry meanwhile became involved in various Cooroy community groups, including secretary for Noosa District

Rugby League Football Club; he lobbied the government for land to become Pirate Park; he was a Cooroy Golf Club committee member; treasurer of the RSL Club, secretary of the Cooroy Sporting Complex and more.

The couple lost a daughter shortly after childbirth in 1964, Betty said, and they never had children thereafter. “[But] there have been six girls and a boy that we’ve reared at various times.”

Over time in retirement, illness from congenital symptoms overtook Harry, and he required constant attention from Betty over his final six years.

“Poor old Harry was very ill at the end,” she said.

Betty was nevertheless heartened to see so many of their ‘adopted’ kids see Harry off on his final journey on January 28.

“The girls were all at Harry’s funeral and are scattered around the area here Peregian, Cooran - they were all swapping phone numbers. It was great to see. The boy (Jim) watched the funeral via live stream in Jersey UK.”

Humans of the Hinterland - Allan

I bought into the joinery in 1990 with a business partner, and worked here ever since. There was no workshop machinery left when we got it, everything here now is what I brought with me and collected along the way. The joinery was heritage listed in 2008. About 5 or 6 years ago the department approved me to build the addon residence as caretaker of the building, which means it can be better looked after.

I have an axe handle/ sledge hammer handle from a copy lathe from the 1800s which is probably the most interesting tool I’ve collected.

I have an old boat out the back that I built 30 years ago, thought I’d pull it out of the water and do a reno on it. Because of the curves and shapes you can’t just put the timber in place, so we steam bend it. The hull is Satinay timber from Fraser Island when it was owned by the Forestry Dept 35 years ago. They were closing up the sawmill at Urangan, I went over with a can of paint and wrote my initials A.G. on the end of the logs, mouth wide open I couldn’t even reach the top of the logs as

they laid horizontally. I bought 75 tonne of it that day, bought as much of it as I could afford, spent every cent that I had.

A gentleman asked me to build him a coffin because he thought he was dying, and he did die, but he never paid for it. So I contacted the family because I thought they would want it, but they didn’t, so I kept it and use it as a toolbox.

I’ve been very fortunate all my life. I do lots of things, I have an open building licence, an open demolition licence and a joinery business. I sew... for fun, I get bored with one thing – so I’m a master of none, I’ll have a go at most things. I was a very

good demolisher, I get like 90% recovery from most of my jobs, less than 10% to landfill, the rest is recycled. I’m big on recycling.

I have fun at work, if you don’t have fun at work you shouldn’t be there. Over the years I’ve had an untold amount of employees, but really they work ‘with’ me rather than ‘for’ me. Hanging out, you can be banging nails or tearing something to pieces, and having fun.

I don’t intend to retire anytime soon.

I don’t play golf.

a community centred awards program to honour exemplary teachers in Australia and New Zealand. Twelve primary and secondary school teachers are selected in Australia, and four in New Zealand.

Mr Mundey was successful against thousands of other teachers and received an Apple Award, which acknowledges outstanding teachers who’ve gone above and beyond for their students. Winners also receive a professional development grant.

Mr Mundey reflects, “My nomination came as a huge surprise. I was really

honoured to receive the award.”

The NEiTA judging panel confirmed that “this year’s winners have each shown great passion for education and an ability to enthuse others. It’s not only the students who benefit, their colleagues and the entire school community do too.”

With the current school year off to a good start, it’s hoped that the path forward will have fewer hurdles to jump over than in the past couple of years and students can enjoy the high quality education that they deserve.

Good food service starts

with a gut feeling

THE COVID-19 pandemic has had a massive effect on a range of businesses and industries across Noosa Shire.

But some have blossomed during this difficult time, and one service – food delivery to homes and businesses – has particularly thrived.

That’s in part thanks to Melissa and her husband Raphael Andreucci Miragaia Ribeiro who, a little more than three years ago, started up Nirvana Life Meals.

Melissa has 10 years as a personal trainer and natural therapist, while Raphael is well-known in Noosa circles as a top-level chef, with experience at Hastings Street eateries such as Bang Bang, Locale, Sum Yung Guys and Miss Moneypenny’s. “[The business] grew from my clients asking me to cook healthy meals for them because they didn’t want to cook,” Mel said.

“They said ‘you have a chef husband; can you cook meals for us?’ – and it turned into a business, then a company, and it all evolved from what I teach people.”

What Mel teaches, apart from fitness and other wellbeing, is diet, based on Ayurvedic methods of balancing the essential food groups known as macro-nutrients (carbs, protein and fats) and avoiding preservatives, dairy and gluten.

“We are very individual: food companies don’t have a story like ours [where we are] working with people and focusing on gut troubles, so because of my background and Raphael being a chef it makes the food taste good.

“So now we have about 15 staff, all taught

by Raphael to cook the food,” Mel said.

It has been a rocketing success, and with COVID and therefore so many more people staying at home, the service has grown exponentially.

Apart from customers in isolation, they reach an age range of 17-80, including many macro-nutrient-conscious gymgoers, along with businesses with a variety of needs.

“We also do a lot with (disability service) NDIS; their customers only pay 20% while NDIS pays the rest,” Mel said.

“We work with health workers, also elderly people who get rebates. They can make an application on our website.”

“All the produce is from farmers’ markets,” Mel said.

“When we do an order there are more than 40 different dishes to choose from – breakfasts, lunches, dinners, snacks, which you can see on our website.

“Everything comes in two different sizes so if someone is trying to lose weight, they can choose the weight loss option, or regular otherwise.”

Orders are delivered on a Saturday in Noosa Shire; they can be just a handful of meals, or 30 to 50 for the week, and the costs average out around $10 to $11 per meal, all high quality.

“They are ready to chuck in the microwave for two minutes, or in a preheated oven,” Mel said.

“In comparison to other brands, ours always come with three serves of vegetables; a lot of the time when you open other ones, there’s just rice and meat - no veggies. “[Ours] are all pre-arranged around macro-nutrients: a ratio of carbs to protein and fats, very health conscious.

“That’s where we’re enhanced because if people want to go further into their health, they can talk [to me] about their gut health and that’s where my health experience comes in.

“It’s not just about ordering on the internet.”

All the produce is from farmers’ markets

Mel said it was important to note that while most customers avoid freezing their deliveries - because they are preservative-free, unlike most commercially bought packaged foods, which is the way customers usually want them - they will only last seven days, and freezing them is perfectly safe for up to 3 months.

Now the business is running smoothly, with only the need for Raphael to drop in and update menus and Mel to keep up the marketing, the pair can continue to focus on their separate endeavours.

She still does personal training and health and diet consulting, while Raphael is still a sous chef at upmarket Hastings St restaurant Bang Bang.

Their coming together story itself as a marital and business team is a quirky tale.

“I had put an ad on Gumtree for a room-mate,” Mel said.

“I specifically said I wanted a female - he said [online] his name was Rachel - and that’s how we met.

“We were just room-mates; nothing more specific at the time.

“But then four months later we went on a date, and here we are.”

“I grew up in Agnes Waters, then moved here to Noosa,” Mel said.

“Raphael’s from Brazil; he’s been here nine years.

“He didn’t know me then, and came here to study English. He was supposed to stay six months, but fell in love with cooking.

“He was in Brisbane for two years [before] he met me. He had been a real estate agent in Brazil, and came from a family of lawyers.

“But in Brazil they all cook – his father, grandfather, were all cooks.

“He started working at Jellyfish in Brisbane, a very upmarket restaurant there; now he’s at Bang Bang as a sous chef. He has a big reputation around Noosa.”

The pair have been living in Cooroy since they married, “but we’ve just bought a house in Tewantin”, Mel said.

“We still love Cooroy – and we’ll only be just down the hill near the golf course.”

Nirvana services Noosa and the hinterland, also further south as far as the Gold Coast – but the focus remains here.

So where does the future lie?

“We are looking at going into private catering,” Mel said.

“We’ve had health retreats contact us, who are getting people coming for a few weeks, so they want us to plan all their meals.

“We’ll be doing large packages, with large discounts due to size – and Raphael can actually go [to them]. Businesses will reach out to us, so we can do private and corporate events.”

Noosa Council kicks off a 12-month trial that will see free weekend travel on all existing Translink services operating within Noosa.

“We want to help more people trying to get in to busy locations like Hastings Street,” Mayor Clare Stewart said.

The trial includes existing Translink services 626, 627, 628, 629 and 632 covering Tewantin, Sunshine Beach, Sunrise Beach, Noosa Heads, Parklands, Noosa Junction, Noosaville, Cooran, Cooroy and Pomona. Routes 620, 630 and 631 travel outside of the Noosa Shire Council area and are not included in the free service.

GP clinics in the Noosa Hinterland and Cooroy can now recruit overseas trained doctors and bonded medical practitioners, after the region successfully campaigned to have its Distribution Priority Area (DPA) status reviewed. This classification identifies regions where people find it harder to get an appointment to see a doctor, based on the needs of the community.

ROCKETSHIP ROLLS INTO COOROY

The centrepiece of the Hinterland Playground in Cooroy has arrived!

At almost 7m tall and weighing around 2 tonnes, the stainless steel Rocketship has been constructed using an old cooling tower that used to be part of the original mill works. Old fire pits, large steel rings and salvaged bridge timbers have been recycled and repurposed as play equipment. This unique naturebased playground is scheduled to open in March 2022.

Noosa Council is charting new territory with the addition of two electric vehicles to its fleet. The new Hyundai IONIQ and MG ZS replace a diesel-powered ute and a petrol-powered car. With charging stations connected to the rooftop solar systems at the Tewantin admin building and Noosaville depot, renewable energy will help offset charging costs.

Council’s Local Laws team will use the Hyundai for patrols, while the MG will join the pool cars used by depot and admin building staff. In addition to the new electric vehicles, Council’s fleet includes six hybrid passenger cars.

MANY people whose property abuts bushland will sporadically catch sight of a Swamp Wallaby. They are most often seen bounding across roads with their very distinctive gait: head held low and tail out straight.

Swamp Wallabies appear to be holding their own in the survival stakes. The reason may be that they have a couple of secret weapons. Firstly, they smell.

This swampy stench meant that they were not persecuted for food by early European settlers. First Nations people also reportedly found Swamp Wallabies unpalatable.

The Swamp Wallaby's other trick is that it can overlap two pregnancies.

Macropods (kangaroos and their cousins) often exhibit what's called "embryonic diapause", which allows them to slow down the development of an embryo if conditions aren't suitable.

Swamp Wallabies, however, are unique in having their gestation period longer than their oestrous cycle. This means

they can carry a fertilised embryo and a young foetus at the same time. What's more, while a young wallaby is suckling milk, the development of the next foetus remains dormant, waiting until the joey is weaned. As a result, female Swamp Wallabies are continually pregnant!

The good news is that these animals may actually be increasing in number. A 2019 study found that they have extended their distribution over the last 40 years and are adapting to increasingly dry habitats.

These are shy, solitary animals, designed to live in forests. Swamp Wallabies enjoy a very broad diet including shrubs and herbage. They appear to tolerate plants that other animals find toxic such as lantana, bracken, and even introduced hemlock.

They are a tricky animal to photograph in the wild because they are furtive and don't like to be watched. I get a thrill every time I come across one of these beautiful, smelly animals.

The local charity, now based near Cooroy, provide this service to Veterans & First Responders, living with PostTraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) as a result of their service to our community.

They are desperate for more volunteers to assist in several areas, including general administration duties, and to help with manning fundraising market stalls, and at fundraising events.

Nutworks expands to Cooroy COOROY played host to Macadamia Growers from across Queensland recently, invited to tour the new processing facility that Yandina-based Nutworks has acquired.

Nutworks announced the exciting news of the move to the new processing facility as part of their expansion program to enable operations and processing to meet domestic and global demand for their products.

“We had been planning to expand our storage at Yandina by the end of the year so this purchase in Cooroy was fortuitous for us as it provides us with so much more opportunity. Our goal is to increase our processing to 5000 tonnes annually within the next 5 years. We plan to be at the forefront technologically to allow us to value add to the macadamia industry, produce high quality products and grow profitability while still retaining our personal relationships with our growers,” said Wayne Gersbach, Nutworks CEO. One family of growers that visited was the Anderson’s from Childers. They have a sixth-generation cane farm that has been in the family for the last 110 years.

They added macadamias six years ago as a supplement to the cane and were very impressed with the new facility. “We’ve been with Nutworks since we started growing six years ago. This opportunity has come along at a good time and we like the plan for Nutworks to grow while keeping

the personal touch which has always been great,” said Donna.

Closer to home, Craeme Cheal from Beerwah said, “It’s a spectacular purchase and gives the room for storage and processing. It will ease the pressure on the Yandina facility and give the room for expansion.”

Approximately 80 macadamia farmers around Queensland provide product to Nutworks for processing and about a quarter of them were treated to a tour of the new facility which also included the launch of a new product that the Cooroy facility provides for Nutworks under the label of the Fresh Macadamia Company.

This product is a unique roastedin-shell macadamia with a special cut making them easy to hand crack. The whole macadamias are dried in their shell, pre-cut and then oven roasted, or soaked in a sea salt brine and then oven roasted for a salted version. A key to open the shells utlising the cut is included in every pack. The macadamia industry is growing in Australia and Nutworks purchase puts them in a prime position to capitalise on this growth.

“Increasing our processing capacity means we can take more product from growers which is important in an industry that is expanding with many young trees set to

increase production in the coming years,” said Wayne Gersbach, Nutworks CEO. The Yandina facility will continue to run as a retail outlet as well as for roasting, chocolate coating and the confectionary line of products.

SNAKE NOODLE SEASON Hi I’m Luke your local Snake Catcher.

Right now we are entering what is known as hatching season. Snake hatching season begins in January and runs through to March after the conclusion of a four-month mating season. This is when all of the baby snakes come out and hatch from the breeding season.

It’s what we affectionately call ‘snake noodle season’.

Hatching season can be really, really busy because there are lots of baby snakes around as well as mature normal snakes as well.

Just the other day I got a brown snake that climbed up through the floor of someone’s house where the pipes go through into the kitchen. Just down the road I got another baby snake an hour later. So there’s plenty around!

The Hinterland area gets a lot of different species of snakes but most predominantly we get the carpet python, common tree snakes, keelbacks and yellow faced whip snakes. Red-bellied black snakes and eastern brown snakes are also around. Eastern brown snakes are quite common in the Hinterland because of the location of local farmlands and surrounding Bush.

THE local persimmon season runs from around mid-February through to the end of March, with fruit from other areas extending their availability in the shops through to about the end of June.

Giro and Fuyu are the most common commercial varieties available, and both

are non-astringent, meaning they can be eaten while still firm and crunchy without fear of the mouth-puckering effects of the tannins present in some of the older astringent varieties.

They have a high sugar content which develops as the fruit ripens, and are great as a snack on their own, or they work very nicely as an ingredient in both sweet and savoury dishes.

Persimmons are a great addition to a cheese platter, they add sweetness and texture to a rocket salad with toasted nuts and fetta, and they complement other fruits like papaya and pineapple when used in a fruit salad or as a topping for a pavlova.

C H I C K E N , P E R S I M M O N A N D B U C K W H E AT SALAD WITH MISO AND GINGER DRESSING I N G R E D I E N TS: • 600 gm chicken breast • 600 gm persimmons, peeled & finely sliced • 1 cup buckwheat kernels • 100 gm Asian leaves (tatsoi, mizuna, baby chard) • ½ cup coriander leaves • 50 gm miso • 50 ml hot water • 50 ml lemon juice • 50 ml extra virgin olive oil • 1 tsp fresh grated ginger • 1 tsp sea salt flakes

M E T H O D: 1. Season the chicken breasts and fry in a hot pan with a little oil until coloured all over.

2. Transfer to a roasting tray and roast in the oven for 12 minutes at 180°C. Rest for 5 minutes before thinly slicing into strips.

3. Bring a medium saucepan of water to the boil, add the buckwheat and boil for 10 minutes.

4. Drain and rinse under cold water.

5. Mix the miso with the hot water to thin it out, then stir in the lemon juice, olive oil, ginger and salt.

6. In a large mixing bowl gently mix the chicken, persimmon, buckwheat, leaves and coriander and dress with the miso dressing.

7. Transfer to a serving dish or platter and serve immediately.

EVERYONE loves a good barbecue - less fuss and more fun and flavour!

Barbecuing has come a long way since the days of overcooked steaks, but many people are still intimidated by outdoor cooking.

Here are our top tips that will have you be the master of the grill in no time: • Understand the difference between direct and indirect cooking. Direct cooking is when the food is cooked directly over the heat source. Indirect cooking is similar to roasting or cooking in an oven, and requires a barbecue with a hood.

• Always ensure your barbecue is preheated before you commence cooking.

• To reduce the chance of flare-ups and

retain the heat, cook with the hood down and don’t check on the food too often.

A light coating of oil will help the food to brown evenly and stop it sticking.

Bring meat (NOT chicken) to room temperature before cooking.

Trim excess fat from meat to avoid flare-ups.

When using bamboo skewers for kebabs, always soak for an hour in water before using to avoid them catching fire.

Smoking wood or chips add extra flavour to your food. Always soak in water prior to using so that they smoulder slowly.

Never prick sausages or cut into a piece of meat to see if it is cooked, as the juices will escape resulting in a tough meat.

Food safety is particularly important when barbecuing. Always keep cooked and uncooked foods separate and ensure cooked food is placed on a clean plate.

SLOW DOWN AND SMELL THE COFFEE

LOCATED in an 80km/h zone, it’s the kind of place you can easily miss.

But stopping in at Alfresco’s garden café/ restaurant at Eumundi for breakfast or lunch is definitely worth doing. It’s part of Kev and Ken’s Flowerpot Men pottery and plant complex on Eumundi Noosa Rd (the Eumundi end).

Open from 6am, owner Dennis Dijst, who hails from Holland, will already have prepared his own muffins (how’s mango and coconut sound?) and prepped all sorts of traditional breakfasts -including a tradie’s special of a bacon and egg roll with coffee for a mere $11.50.

Breakfast ends at noon, when Alfresco’s

Garden café turns into a speakeasy-style licensed restaurant for a cool experience under the big open space roof surrounded by lush bush, with a quality, diverse Mediterranean menu to delve through.

The airy atmosphere and ample parking lends the venue well for catering functions and parties too.

Your correspondent was standing at the counter when a customer came over and said “That’s very nice coffee, and a very tasty muffin, too”, so Dennis is getting it right.

It’s Alfresco coffee, a special blend of Dennis’ own creation, the ingredients of which he was very careful not to divulge.

“Because we’re a little bit remote here, you

have to get the coffee right,” Dennis said.

“We’re more of a destination, so you need to cater for passing drivers too.”

Dennis, a qualified chef, pastry chef and baker, said he will one day open for Friday and Saturday nights, but until staffing gets easier in these tough times, that will have to wait.

“We’re open seven days from 6am to about 3pm, that’s enough for now,” he laughed.

Before he came to Australia, Dennis worked at some classy restaurants in the Netherlands, and arrived in Brisbane in 2010.

“I went down to look at Sydney, then worked at many coastal places between Sydney and Brisbane,” he said.

“That journey took six years.”

When he got back to Brisbane he temped as a chef at a whole range of cafes and restaurants, requiring a lot of culinary dexterity, and learning a lot on the way.

“Greek, Lebanese, cafes, whatever was needed,” he said.

That has taught him about what works and doesn’t work when it comes to café/ restaurants. But Brisbane wasn’t for him, after so much time in small coastal towns all the way up from Sydney. He’s now a full Aussie and loves the local scene.

“I think I’ve found my home now. I’m 54 - I‘ve got to stop sometime,” he laughed.

Bus Stop’s owners Rob and Beth Noy said they were planning “a day full of surprises” when the date comes around.

“We will be giving away hampers made from local products every hour that day,” Beth said.

“And if you bring a friend who hasn’t been here before, they will get a free coffee on the day. It’s buy one, get one free.”

Bus Stop Espresso has arrived at the right time, as its setting, with large open shaded spaces surrounding it, incorporating a

number of outside tables, has allowed COVID-sensitive customers a sense of security and tranquility to enjoy a coffee.

The business has also attracted a large number of local suppliers of fresh produce, making a ‘coffee stop’ a growing shopping experience.

“We were going to be staying open until 9.30 in the morning [when we first started],” Rob said.

“We’re here almost all day now, which is really good.”

Thursday, March 17 should be a great day, and for those who haven’t been there before, you can find the bus on Mary River Road, Cooroy, opposite the council waste tip site.

THERE has been a lot of frenetic activity at the old Mulberry Café premises in Cooroy’s Maple Street this last month.

That’s because Bill Misener and his family have been busy preparing a new culinary venture for the shop – Smoking Billy’s.

“I’ve been in the business for 35 years,” Bill said.

“I’ve had the bistro in Joe’s Waterhole (in Eumundi) for years.

“I was quite surprised with how busy Cooroy is compared to Eumundi.”

The menu, Bill said, will include ribs, wings, pulled pork, burgers, wraps and salads, and there will be vegetarian options as well as takeaway home-made ‘heat-n-eat’ choices.

The business’s Facebook site already has more than 600 followers, one of whom asked about the availability of hot sauces, the response being that will be another option.

At the time of Your Local’s visit, the paint was still drying on the new signage, and the opening date unknown but imminent, but it’s looking good.

The shop had been re-painted with signs indicating the start of a business called Little Brown Wolf, which never opened its doors. Prior to that it was a fried chicken outlet for a few months, then Mulberry Café.

A N E V E N I N G O F P O E T RY A N D S O N G ACCLAIMED British singer-songwriter and poet Emily Maguire is presenting an evening of poetry and songs at Berkelouw Books in Eumundi to celebrate the publication of her most recent poetry collection Words With Wings.

An established artist with six albums and four books to her name, Emily relocated from the UK to the Obi Obi valley in 2019 with her Australian husband Christian Dunham.

Her new book Words With Wings is a collection of stream-of-consciousness poems written after her daily Buddhist meditation practice. A local performance poet Robin Archbold suggested she should try writing some music to go with them. “I was completely inspired”, says Emily. An accomplished composer in her own right, the result was a digital album of readings and piano music which accompanies the book.

READERS of Hannah Kent’s previous novels will be familiar with the slow, haunting prose that she uses to evoke a sense of place – and if you are not familiar with her work, Hannah’s latest novel Devotion is probably a great introduction.

This novel tells the story of Hanne and her friend Thea. It is 1836 and they live in a small village in Prussia. They are Old Lutherans and have been ostracised because of the King’s order for religious reform, forced to practice their religion in secret. Hanne is 15 and on the cusp of womanhood but is finding it hard to fit in with her mother’s, and her communities’, expectations of marriage and family.

Thea’s mother is a little less rigid, and has her own secrets to protect. Hanne and Thea have a strong bond, and in their stolen moments together they explore the forest surrounding their hamlet. “The entire forest was shrouded in a think fog that yawned white, refusing to lift and

everything was still and muffled. Water dripped from branches…I breathed lungdeep, imagined that I exhaled dust. The relief of the forest was exquisite”.

After petitioning the King, the village Elders are finally able to obtain consent for them to leave the country and so begins an arduous 6-month journey to South Australia where they hope to be able to once again practice their religion freely.

This novel draws you in, encourages you to take a slower pace, with rich descriptive prose and a sublime use of language to convey emotion and a strong impression of surrounding, from deep in the Prussian Forest through to the unexplored terrain of the Adelaide Hills. This is a novel to savour.

Vikki Thorn celebrates solo album release in Eumundi VIKKI THORN (of The Waifs) is heading to The Imperial Hotel Eumundi for a beautiful evening of new music, supported

by Andrea Kirwin.

The performance will celebrate the release of her debut solo album.

After 28 years of singing and touring as one third of ‘The Waifs’, Vikki Thorn (aka ThornBird) has returned home to Australia to find her own voice in the wild places of WA. Known for her evocative song writing including Bridal Train, Sun Dirt Water and Take Me To Town, Vikki’s new solo material was born out of 10 years living in the canyons of Utah.

In these songs she explores the recurring theme of home and connection to place, and portrays the humour and heartbreak of life just south of Hell’s Backbone.

A dynamic and passionate performer who has sung with Bob Dylan, Levon Helm, Paul Kelly, John Butler and Missy Higgins, Thorn is renowned for her powerful vocals and unique blues harp playing.

Her songs weave through country and blues, slightly side stepping away from the folk format of The Waifs, to indulge her love of the old R&B singing style. Thorn’s voice can swing and roll or radiate the intimate warmth of the morning’s first cuppa inviting you to sit at the kitchen table while she sings about life in the wild places.

ThornBird’s debut solo album will be released in March 2022.

THE Noosa Heads Jazz Club is now staging monthly jazz concerts showcasing local jazz musicians and featuring musicians from Brisbane and Interstate, at The Majestic Theatre Pomona.

The Jazz Club is a not-for-profit community organisation formed in 1994 to promote the appreciation of the traditional forms of jazz and to keep this art form alive for the enjoyment of the people of the Noosa and surrounding districts.

AUSTRALIA Day is a no-holds-barred satirical look at how we celebrate the pride of our national day. The play takes place in a fictional town called ‘Coriole’ where we get to meet a cornucopia of crusty characters who’s job it is to get the town event going.

It’s a no-brainer right? Wrong! Anyone who has ever served on a committee (most people would rather have root canal without an anaesthetic) will instantly recognise some hilarious, awkward and frosty moments and understand how frustrating it can be to have an array of differing opinions to piece together something that will work for everyone…no offense. Sausage sizzle? Now there’s a can

of worms! Of course there’s some dialogue which will definitely be a conversation starter on various hot potato topics, but all in all it’s just good clean fun with ordinary salt of the earth Aussies.

The play was written ten years ago by Jonathan Biggins who is an Australian actor, writer, singer and director. He is well known on the small screen and in theatres around the country. Many will remember his acerbic ‘The Gospel According to Paul’ recent stage show about Paul Keating.

The show opens at Noosa Arts Theatre on April 7 and runs until April 16.

Sonder Studio Gallery opens in Cooroy THE official opening of the social enterprise Sonder Studio Gallery and the ‘Creating Change’ International Women’s Week exhibition will showcase some of the champion women artists, both highly experienced and emerging, from the local community and beyond.

Sonder’s Ambassador for Women Charmaine Lyons, an accomplished artist and founder of ‘Women United - A Photographic March’ is organising the ‘Creating Change’ exhibition with Founding Director of Sonder Gabby Sutherland. ACCESS to quality medical care is a key priority for me and for the Coalition Government, and a new health workforce classification has been introduced for the Noosa hinterland, including Cooroy, that will make it easier to attract doctors to the region and reduce the strain on existing medical staff.

The new health workforce classification system is called ‘Distribution Priority Areas’ (DPA), and the Noosa hinterland has gained DPA status identifying it as an area that does not have an adequate number of doctors to meet the needs of the population.

Minister for Regional Health Dr David Gillespie and I recently visited Cooroy Medical Practice and Cooroy’s LiveLife Pharmacy, where we listened to staff and gained an understanding of local medical issues.

During Dr Gillespie’s visit to Wide Bay, we heard that like their colleagues in many regional areas, GPs in Wide Bay have struggled to attract enough medical professionals, and I am aware that at times, people have been left waiting for GP appointments as a result or even travelling to other towns for care.

So this DPA status update is a positive change that will allow Noosa hinterland practices to recruit restricted doctors such as overseas trained and Australian Bonded doctors, providing a greater pool of doctors to draw from to increase access to GP services.

The new DPA system ensures a better distributed health workforce, with doctors directed into the areas where they are needed most. Ensuring access to quality healthcare is a key priority for the Morrison Government, and I look forward to seeing more doctors start practicing in the Noosa hinterland.

Dr Gillespie and I will continue to work together to ensure people in Noosa communities can access quality, affordable medical care and advice when and where they need it.

However, as we have seen, changes to projections occur rapidly! In your COVID ‘toolkit’, handwashing, distancing and masks are recommended standards even when not mandated, and ATAGI recommend boosters to increase protection with Novavax vaccinations available from February 21.

My Parliamentary portfolio Committee, Legal Affairs and Safety, has just completed the inquiry into serious vilification and hate crimes in QLD with the report available on Parliament’s website. It is shocking what has and is being perpetrated to our fellow human beings across communities and online. DESPITE the daily challenges which Omicron is creating for businesses and families alike, the latest data suggests that our economic recovery is in full swing. I have requested urgent intervention by TMR and the Minister from new engineer reports and affidavits publicly available as part of the court case in efforts for greater safety especially during the school bus runs, as well immediate inspection of the road.

I have been assured by Sunshine Coast Council and the Department of Transport and Main Roads that work on the new pedestrian bridge over the North Maroochy River is imminent. This has been a long running campaign, and I was pleased we were finally able to secure joint funding for this project. Apparently there have been delays with the final design, but I’m told this vital project is due to get underway. It can’t come soon enough.

THE latest labour force data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics underlines the strength of the Palaszczuk Government’s Economic Recovery Plan for Queensland. During January, Queensland recorded the highest growth in employment in Australia, and the largest fall in unemployment of any state.

Queensland defied expectations of an Omicron downturn, creating 17,400 jobs in the month. Australia would have gone backwards without Queensland, given employment increased by just 12,900 across the nation.

This strength is thanks to our world-leading health response, which allowed our economy to stay open until Queenslanders had sufficient access to vaccinations. Since we were first elected, the Palaszczuk Government has seen the creation of more than 1,000 jobs, on average, every single week in Queensland.

That’s 376,800 new jobs under Labor.

The Gambling Community Benefit Fund (GCBF) is Queensland’s largest one-off community grants program and distributes approximately $60 million each year to not-for-profit community groups.

Fabulous 60s Plus THE Fabulous 60’s Plus social group was established approximately 15 years ago as the Fabulous 50’s for local solo business people to enjoy a weekly dining/social experience in like minded company.

The Great Walk for Parkinson’s will be a collaborative initiative focused on raising funds and awareness for Parkinson’s Disease. This event was conceptualised to reduce stigma and enhance resources and education for a disease that affects over 130,000 Australians. The walk commences in Mapleton on April 4 to camp overnight, before finishing up at Lake Baroon Recreational Park in Montville on Tuesday April 5, with a Picnic for Parky’s event. It’s hoped enough will be raised to fund a Scholarship for a PhD student to undertake local placement in the focus area of Movement Disorders, while also providing a boost of funding for a local therapy group Restoring Hope Parkinson’s Therapy.

A history of love and friendship in a small town WHEN Wendy Bebbington feels the squeeze in her thriving, home town and worries about enough car parks, she doesn’t grumble about it. Concerned for her CWA members and inspired by a history of dedicated women, she sets her mind to doing something about it.

“We need more carparks because there are just not enough in the town. But how you can do that I don’t know. We received a grant through the council for car parks, for the CWA members and tenants, and they are just about finished,” says Wendy.

The best way to catch up with the current Cooroy Branch President is to meet her at the hall, and catch her between jobs. “I go every morning to make sure that the tenants the day before have not left rubbish for the next tenant and I wash the hall out. We have good tenants in our hall. I do the bookings.

I’m down here every morning.”

“I love the CWA, it’s my second family really. I love the work and we have had to work because we’ve had loans. We bought the railway land at the back and we borrowed for that. We paid that all off with functions. We just worked. Then we purchased the health reserve in the front.

Now it’s freehold. CWA own the whole lot.”

They’ve almost paid off their debts.

“Once we pay that we will still have some functions, because that’s what I think keeps the CWA alive is having functions and meeting. The members have been terrific.

They’ve helped me in every way.”

Wendy officially joined the Cooroy CWA in 1971. She had been a member of the Younger Set (previously a CWA group dedicated to young girls) since 1968. “I’ve enjoyed the CWA for love and friendship.

They’re all a happy group, especially in Cooroy, they are not frightened to help.”

“I didn’t get involved with the CWA until the children went to school. We had three children. We lost our first child. She lived two days and she was born in 1972.

Mandy and Scotty, our other two children, came along in 1973 and 1975.” Wendy and husband Bob are now loving grandparents, who recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Wendy’s mother, Gloria Balcombe OAM, joined Cooroy CWA in 1954 and was still a member until her recent passing, equalling

sixty-eight years of service. Wendy went along to CWA meetings as a little girl.

“Back then the meetings were held in a side room of the Memorial Hall but as they outgrew that space they decided to build.”

In 1953 the Cooroy branch was granted a piece of land and with an additional land lease from Queensland Rail began a fundraising drive to raise the deposit for a bank loan to build a new hall. In December 1956 the CWA Hall was declared open and debts were paid off four years later.

Wendy’s parents, Gloria and Jim Balcombe had a banana farm on Gumboil Road.

Wendy was born in the Cooroy Hospital in 1950 and grew up on the farm, where she lived until it was sold around 1968. “Born and bred in Cooroy,” she says. “I used to travel from the farm to Tinbeerwah school by bike. It was the good old days with lots of other farms around.

In the Cooroy area it was mainly beans and bananas and dairy,” Wendy remembers.

In those days it was accepted that all of the family were involved in the farm. Farmwork was a family business and all hands were needed. “They worked hard. Mum worked hard on the bananas and they had passionfruit and pawpaw. The produce used to go on the train. Dad used to bring the bananas, we had carriers too, but they brought it into the railway station and off it went to the markets to Brisbane. Cavendish and lady fingers, beautiful big bananas.

They were in timber boxes and mum and I would make the cases by nailing them

It’s a friendly little town. It doesn’t matter what shop you go into they are all so friendly and help you. I’ve always loved Cooroy.

together. It was good out there on the farm.”

Wendy went to Tinbeerwah school until it closed in 1963. She completed primary school in Cooroy and then went on to Noosa District High until year 10. “I didn’t really like school much so I worked in the bakers shop in Cooroy and then when I met Bob and we were married, we bought the bakers shop”.

From Cooroy Bakery, the shop in town and later baking in the industrial estate,

Wendy and Bob were in business for 36 years. “It was long hours, up to 15 hours a day, six days a week. But with the help and support of family and good reliable staff we made it work,” Wendy offers generously.

Both Wendy and Bob, at different times were President of the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce. “We enjoyed being in business, seeing lots of changes in the town. We enjoyed the friendly interaction with our customers.” In 2007 they sold to Richie’s Bakery which is still there today.

At the 1966 Debutante Ball, Miss Wendy Balcombe was crowned Deb of the Year. For young Wendy this would be just the first of many wins. Twenty years later, as Mrs Wendy Bebbington, and CWA President she would host the Ball. In 2009 she was awarded State Fundraiser of the Year for collecting close to $33,000 in funds.

Her current tenure as President is her third in nearly thirty years. This year is extra special as it marks the Centenary of the Queensland Country Woman’s Association - one hundred years since Ruth Fairfax, an active community minded country woman, was appointed founding President.

Today, the QCWA is widely recognised as the strongest women’s lobby group in Australia, which is why a call from the CWA makes politicians shake at the knees. With 220 branches, the association is a powerful group, working in the interests of women and children in rural and regional areas.

“Our aim in QCWA is women and children. That’s our aim, to help them,” says Wendy. She agrees that not many people know about the work of the QCWA, but acknowledges, “they do have power.”

“We have resolutions at (State) conference every year and it’s voted on and of course if it’s government it goes to government. We have close connection with the government.

They listen and the resolutions get through, 99% of them get through.”

But it’s at a local level where Wendy’s heart truly resides. She has seen many changes over the years in Cooroy but it hasn’t changed her feelings. “It’s different

now to what it was. Before when you used to go down the street you knew everyone but now you don’t know many at all. But it’s a friendly little town. It doesn’t matter what shop you go into they are all so friendly and help you. I’ve always loved Cooroy. It’s a beautiful town.”

Now, there is fund raising to catch up, stalled by COVID restrictions, a hall to sweep out, new car-parks to complete and a centenary celebration looming.

“I had an email from a lady the other day saying she was lonely and could she come along. I emailed her back and I said certainly come along and meet us all and get involved. I don’t know what age she is, but it doesn’t matter what age, you accept them.”

Wendy is a gentle force, quietly at work in her home town, in service to others. She more than lives up to the QCWA adage “What bonds us is friendship and a strong desire to help others.”

Hinterland pharmacies’ two weeks of madness

FOR Noosa hinterland towns, the first two weeks of January 2022 were a time of panic and stress – and right on the front line were pharmacies.

The owner of Cooroy and Pomona LiveLife pharmacies for the last six years, Jacquie Meyer, and her near-30 staff will not forget it.

“The last two years has been the biggest change for the whole industry in a long time,” she said of the COVID pandemic.

But it wasn’t until January this year the real pressure began.

“Announcements came very quickly, made before supply lines were in place,” Jacquie said.

“It put pressure on pharmacies as they are often the first place for people to go to get advice and help. It was very stressful to deal with the constant level of stress and panic in the community.”

Advice was arriving right, left and centre on vaccinations, rapid antigen tests (RATs), reduced waiting periods for booster shots and jabs for younger children – all at the same time, Jacquie said.

But reliable information wasn’t always available in supply or advice.

“Customers were coming for advice - we were getting hundreds of calls per day – we could hear panic in the community,” she said.

“We would not have the right information to give to people, or provide RATs in a timely way.

“We were trying to do our best, but the situation was getting out of control and supply channels were not there.”

Jacquie said the staff took the brunt of it, with calls, emails, and constant queries.

“We were dealing with a large number, with an age range across the board,” she said.

“People had concern for children, themselves, elderly parents, employers concerned for their staff – and young children, that was different again.”

Infection numbers are now dropping, Jacquie said.

“The peak has passed, and Queensland is on the right side of the curve, especially in the local region where we had massive amounts - it spread very quickly.

“Many families were isolating, and we were making a lot of deliveries – far more than usual.

“We felt a heightened level of responsibility, to communicate the need to do the right thing.

“But there are not many in isolation now - the community has done the right thing,” she said, although she noted a small number who had tested positive yet were still seen in and around the community.

“The focus now is for staff to take welldeserved breaks, catch up on downtime.

“We need to recognise the hardship for the extra work they have put in – and I’d like to thank the community for supporting us and understanding the pressures.”

Plover’s precarious position SOMETIMES our WILVOS Hotline has us scratching our heads. Solutions aren’t always simple.

Groundsman Rod rang from a local school, concerned about three plover eggs not in a good location. He wanted the best outcome. School was due to start Monday and the eggs were near the main office pathway. The parents were very protective.

I have enormous respect for native animals that try to stand up to humans. Many humans run off shrieking in terror, as if this small bird is going to rip their arm off !

Children would be walking past this site.

Relocation of eggs was considered, but there wasn’t anywhere suitable nearby and this is rarely successful. Deciding to leave the eggs till first thing Monday, I hoped the chicks would hatch on the weekend.

One of our dedicated WILVO carers, Merete, was happy to check the eggs early Monday morning and bring them to me if not hatched. There is actually a feeling of sadness and guilt when eggs are taken, but sometimes it is necessary. There is always a risk that some cruel and irresponsible person will just take the eggs and break them. Our children are the future of our

wildlife so we don’t want them witnessing any such heartless act.

Four days after arrival the chicks hatched. A week later, they race around on the grass as I throw bugs and worms on the ground.

They return to the brooder at night.

Gheerulla Falls Mapleton National Park GHEERULLA Falls are located in the beautiful Mapleton National Park. There are a few ways to get to the falls but my favourite was starting at the end of Sam Kelly Road off Kenilworth Rd. Allow yourself six hours for this 14kms return trip. I advise you to keep an eye on the weather, as if there is too much rain it will be flooded. There are toilets located at the Gheerulla Camp Ground 1.2km from the start.

I started my day early at 6am and parked the car at the entrance to the National Park. As you walk in there is a Trail Bike map, go right following The Great Walk sign crossing over the first of four creek crossings. From there follow the trail about 1km, you will reach a sign pointing you in the direction of the falls.

It is absolutely beautiful walking along the creek listening as the stream burbles over the rocks, and you hear more birds than you see. This time of year with the rain the park is alive with mossy rocks, trees and the fungi is abundant. Around every corner you are overwhelmed with beauty and it really feels like you have found paradise and secret places. I saw three people the day I went so the serenity is heaven. The creeks were up, but I managed to keep my feet dry on the way there but didn’t bother on my return trip. I also didn’t have any issues with leeches but I know they are there.

The Gheerulla Falls were pumping as we had just had some good rain! Nothing like the sound and power of the water thundering over the crest falling into the plunge pool below. Take your time to really take them in. Feel the mist from the falls while you sit and refresh with your snacks, water or cup of tea. You can either return the same way or make your way to the Day Use area at Mapleton. You would need someone to drop you off and pick you up.

I also walked into multiple spider webs and ate one bug Hahahaha!

You can also enter from Mapleton at the Mapleton Day use Area and it’s

approximately 15km return. This walk is through the forest and parts are shared trails so you may come across horses and bikes. On part of this trail you are on The Sunshine Coast Great Walk.

You can also go in from Mapleton on Delicia Rd at Linda Garrett circuit which is also a part of the Great Walk. Ubajee walker’s camp is 5.1km where there is a viewing platform looking over the stunning valley and Gheerulla falls 7.3km(14.6km return) If you go a little further up Delicia Rd on the right you will see another smaller entrance. This is only about 2km to the falls although it is quite steep.

The Mapleton Day use area has picnic tables and toilets and is well maintained.

I have already started to explore the other trails in Mapleton National Park and will share them with you soon.

Remember to take plenty of water on this trail, sunscreen, hat and first aid kit.

I would recommend that a good level of fitness is needed and plan your trip. Maps are available on Great Walk Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

I think children over 10 would be fine to take along. But remember to be patient when taking your children and add a little more time to your trip. Also if you are keen you could throw an overnight camp in at Ubajee walker’s camp or Gheerulla camping area.

ANOTHER rainy day @#$%! Don’t get me wrong, I love the rain but I also love riding and in my world as a bicycle mechanic the two don’t go together.

Why? Well for a few reasons: #1 Mountain bike trails can be badly damaged by riding on them in the wet. #2 bikes need a lot more maintenance when used in the wet #3 I just don’t like it!

Lets expand on these a little. “Mountain bike trails can be badly damaged by riding on them in the wet.” A lot of community effort and money goes into building, maintaining and grooming mountain bike trails to make them as fun and sustainable as possible. Unsurprisingly when it rains a lot of that hard packed groomed dirt goes soft and turns to mud so riding this destroys all that hard work.

“Bikes need a lot more maintenance

when used in the wet.” Modern mountain bikes have many moving parts that contain, literally, hundreds of ball bearings.

These bearings have dust seals protecting them from said dust but this does not include protection from water and the fine grit that can wash in and wear and rust these little round balls.

Grease is also a major protector and lubricator in bikes but unfortunately even the very best grease is susceptible to being flushed out by water. With this in mind also be careful how you wash your bike. Low water pressure, minimal detergent and only wash it when it needs it, my bikes get washed maybe two or three times a year.

Now if you must ride in the wet, choose dirt roads and fire trails rather than mountain bike parks, ride around the puddles and have your bike serviced regularly by a professional bike mechanic - twice a year is recommended.

So its raining today and I want to get some exercise... I could go for a trail run or I could dust off my Muni (26” mountain Unicycle) and roll some fire trail. Won’t that be rough on your uni, you may say.

No it won’t, as a unicycle has very few moving parts, no chain and one set of

wheel bearings, so two or four cartridge bearings compared to a modern mountain bike that may have 26 cartridge bearings!

DURING February, conditions on Lake Cootharaba were some of the wildest seen in many years.

The first two weeks saw strong wind warnings on a regular basis and the waters whipped up to resemble a washing machine.

Wind speeds frequently gusted in excess of 25 knots, at times reaching gale force (in excess of 34 knots).

A 47-knot gust was recorded by the club’s weather station on February 4.

Needless to say, this curtailed sailing activities for most and club racing scheduled for February 6 was cancelled.

But some reveled in the conditions.

Windsurfers dusted off their small boards and sails and took to the lake with a display of some spectacular action - at one stage joined in blasting back and forth across the lake by a Hawaiian sailing canoe.

Conditions abated, but only slightly, for the Queensland Moth dinghy state championships scheduled for February 12-13.

The regatta went ahead, but with only six entrants. There was some spectacular action, but the conditions and attrition of competitors through gear failure took their toll and the Moths are keen to return to the lake continue their battle on another day.

Lake Cootharaba Sailing Club has several more regattas scheduled this season, including the Javelin State Titles (March 5-6), Easter Allboats Regatta (April 15-17), and the May Weekend Regatta (April 30 – May 1).

The Easter Regatta includes the state titles for the spectacular A-Class catamarans, the fastest single-handed small catamarans in the world.

SIX Cooroy Dolphins swim club athletes competed at the 2022 Qld Swimming Sprint Championships in February, achieving many seasonal best times and some even made the finals - which are top-10 placings in Queensland.

Senior swimmers Rhys Bailey and Mitchell Warren excelled, with Rhys swimming a massive personal best time to claim bronze in the 17-yo boys 50m butterfly.

Mitchell meanwhile took out silver in the boys 17-yo 50m backstroke, both boys under the guidance and mentorship of head coach Andrew Cowan.

“The lads are consistently putting in the effort when it counts, and we are always working on ways to effectively develop the stroke,” Cowan said.
