WHILST the team at Bendigo Bank may not compete in the King of the Mountain challenge, they were quick to write a cheque to support the event. For the past 8 years Bendigo Bank have provided the Cooroy Pomona Lions Club with a cheque for $6000 to help host the event. “Our Community Bank is proud to support the King of the Mountain both with much needed funds and human effort,” says Bendigo Bank Cooroy Branch Manager Amanda Fletcher. “We’ve a team of staff ready to assist on the day.” “Our Community Bank gives back up to 80% of profits to the community,” says Trish Radge, Chair of the local Community Bank.
“A highlight for directors is allocating those funds to worthwhile projects and events like Pomona’s King of the Mountain.” Pomona local Leslie Saunders was crowned Queen of the Mountain for the first time in 2015, again in 2016 and 2021. “Watching Leslie Saunders power through the finishing line to win last year was so exciting,” said Ms Radge. “Leslie’s athleticism and agility is as impressive as the crowd of Pomona State School children who come to support one of their fabulous teachers.” The Pomona King of The Mountain Event - project of the Cooroy Pomona Lions Club - is celebrating 43 years of competition in 2022.

Beautiful artwork adorns Cooroy RSL
AN exciting new addition to Cooroy RSL blossomed into being on the back wall with an amazing three part mural. Cooroy RSL commissioned the murals with the intention to add to the many other art installations around town. “We wanted to beautify the area at the rear of the club particularly as this is the view seen from the railway and from the
east side of town. Several months ago we rendered the rear of the building and planned for the murals to complete the transformation. We wanted something that spoke of the different aspects of Cooroy while also providing a great visual,” said General Manager, Helen Hollingworth. The work was done by travelling mural artist, NITSUA aka Austin. Austin’s largest
scale mural project to date was the Cowell Silo Art project, completed in 2018 with the support of Gold Coast artist Shmick. He has done many murals around Australia including the murals at Cooroy State School last year. The murals reflect significant parts of the town including possums as the town derives its name from the Gubbi Gubbi

Terra Firma The good soil FROM a simple desire to cook over fire, Terra Firma is a Sunshine Coast catering success story, embraced by diners hungry for more than just dripping, succulent meat. The seed was planted long before in the mind of Frenchman, Charly Pretet. “When I started Terra Firma over a year ago, it had been in my mind for quite a while. Terra Firma, the name is pretty simple. It means firm soil, or good soil in Latin. So the idea behind it is really to connect the diner with the environment where the food has been grown. Cooking outdoors for me as a chef is more about going back to the basics. No fancy equipment, no suvee, plastic bag, no perfect temperature. Just shovelling the coal, cooking in the environment, taking into consideration rain, heat, wind. It’s always about the challenge.” Looking for a new challenge, Charly chose this area to set up home, inspired by the opportunities he saw for his entrepreneurial style of hospitality. “I have been here for seven years (in Australia) and the culture is changing a lot in a good way. There are more and more food festivals promoting regional produce, nationally. It’s great to see that people are getting more and more interested about where their meat, seafood, vegetables come from,” he says. Fresh from the Parisian lifestyle, to the NSW coastal town of Yamba, Charly opened his first Australian venture, The French Pan Tree. Six months after opening he was awarded one Chef Hat by the Australian Good Food Guide. “That was very unexpected. I wasn’t chasing that at all so it just came as a massive surprise,” a humbled Charly explains. Charly’s style takes elements of French fine dining, paired with a traditional, rustic approach to produce. He has a hands-on approach to sourcing the best, Page 6 | Your Local Lifestyle July 2022

local produce and putting that forward. The restaurant, a surprise addition to the coastal fishing town, was loved by locals and holiday makers alike and gained a reputation from Noosa to Sydney. “I had an apprentice butcher from the next town who was growing pig on the side and I would get one pig every week. I would get a suckling and sometimes carry it right through the restaurant.” Charly would break it down into cuts and create the ever-changing menu, based on what dishes were possible with the produce he had on hand. At the height of The French Pan Tree’s success external factors caught up with him. The drought and the bushfires that followed really affected the town and the farmers. Charly says, “It was really fun
and I ended up building up a really good network of small producers and growers. After two and a half years it was not sustainable and we decided to move on after the summer of the bushfires.” Charly was keen for a new challenge. Then there was COVID. “I was born and raised between Paris and the west coast of France, Sables d’ Olonne. It used to be like a fishing town back in the day. It’s on my mother’s side so my great-great grandfather used to live there. It was a big fishing town, now it’s bigger, busy, lots of tourists. It’s a great little area and really pretty. My grandfather used to have a massive veggie patch and I just grew up around the chickens, picking produce and in big orchards with pear, apples, plums, apricot.”
He has a hands-on approach to sourcing the best, local produce and putting that forward.
Charly’s parents were into horses and had stables in Paris. From a young age he joined them travelling and competing in show jumping championships. School holidays were spent on the farm at Sables d’ Olonne. “Going to grandads for the holidays was a little treat. He made sure every time he had killed a few pigeons ready for Sunday lunch. I really grew up in that culture, surrounded by amazing quality produce. My dad was hunting and shooting as well. I got my shooting licence when I was 15 and was going with him on the weekends when I could. We would hunt and eat pheasants, grouse, deer, wild pig. They would butcher it after the session as a group, and then they would share the whole animal. We had the freezer full of all sort of game meat and my mum was making terrine with the pig, wild boar, deer, hare.” Charly started in hospitality at sixteen and although not a chef, opened his first restaurant at just twenty-five. He employed a London chef for about three years.
COMMUNITY
“I was starting to understand that if you are not the chef in your own restaurant then you’ve got someone to rely on all the time. I started to get into conflict and I think I wasn’t quite ready to handle those kind of situations because of my young age. I sold the restaurant and started working for a friend of mine. His chef left one day and I said to him; you know me, you know how passionate I am, I love cooking, just get me into it and I can do the job surely better than another chef !” “Produce defines my cooking because I’m a self made chef. I’ve never done any cooking studies. I don’t have any certification, any diploma or whatever. I am produce driven. So all the knowledge and all the experience I had when I was younger just made me realise how much I love food
and how much I want to share that food with people around me,” Charly shares. In complex times, Terra Firma’s ethos has broad appeal and outdoor, open-fire cooking is attracting attention, as a catering option and at events. The festive style of eating and sharing appeals to our desire for simplicity and connection. The whole process is one of deceleration and raised consciousness. “We can cater completely off-grid and that is the idea. It’s like really doing what we love, wherever we want. It pushes your creativity as a chef, you always have to improvise. In a kitchen it’s simple but outdoors you are always pushing your creativity a bit further. What is amazing with fire, you are not allowed to make any mistake. There is no mistake possible otherwise you just burn your
work in a fraction of seconds.” After a year of working hard, staring down COVID restrictions and flooding rains, cultivating suppliers and building a solid reputation, Charly is now refining the direction of Terra Firma. His passion is the driving force. “Cooking over fire is very relaxing in a way. I always have this ritual no matter how big the fire pit is going to be, I always take a moment for myself to be just absolutely captivated by the fire, the wood cracking, the light growing, hearing the first birds. Sometimes I start at 3 am in the morning so I’m pretty much on my own at this time of the day and it’s a great moment. Every time it fills me with a lot of emotion.” www.terrafirmadining.com

DAF has approved three key recommendations to proceed: A targeted Noosa SharkSmart education program that focuses on local water user groups and local conditions, drones and alternative drumlines. NBRF Chair, Rowan Rafferty said the approved actions are a positive step in the right direction. “Our beaches are a valued part of Noosa’s lifestyle and attractiveness, and this trial is an important step towards protecting both human and marine life across Noosa’s bays and beaches. ‘HUMANS of the Hinterland’ is a human interest photography and storytelling project, based in the Noosa hinterland towns of Pomona, Cooran and surrounds. We continue this series introducing you to Sandra from Cooran.
I’ve been caring for someone with severe mental illness for over 20 years. You start thinking ‘if this is how I have to spend the rest of my life - then I want to give up’. That’s why I turn things into beauty. When someone lives a traumatic life - you usually find those are the people who create beautiful things... that’s how they deal with it - to create. I think that’s why I do the house and the garden, I wanted to create a nice home environment, always make everything beautiful.. flowers and greenery in every room. I have a little winter house in the garden, I spend most of the winter down here. The sun comes up in the morning, I have a fire in there, and cook what I’m going to eat during the day. I don’t have any town water in the house - I love the rain water. This garden is one of my life passions. I don’t know the names of all the plants. I’m pretty random with what I plant. I used to only plant ‘food’, that’s all I would allow myself when I first came here, but I’ve changed - now it just has to be beautiful. I love to constantly have flowers in the house.
I’ve been planting a lot of natives here as well. Hopefully they will be left to grow, because it’s not about me, it’s about the next generation. I’ve got a silver gum growing, I’ve been trying to grow one of these for a long time! I’m so proud. I use it for dyeing it’s divine. It’s probably my favourite space in the garden. I’ve been wearing vintage, long The eclect ic style of Sand ra’s home dresses and the like since I was about 15. ‘Vintage’ style feels kind of forced nowadays, it’s not authentic. I go from one extreme to the other with the way I dress. I love so many styles. My knitting is a big part of who I am. It’s constantly evolving... I’ve started needle felting. I knit the garment first, and I felt into it. I sell some pieces at the Hinterhub, but mostly I just give it away, to be honest. All of the wool and fabric I get from the op shop, so I work with what I’ve got. I also sew and do mosaic art. Being so creative and visual, I’ve found mundane jobs soul destroying. I would come home from work and cry every afternoon, I was just exhausted - I couldn’t create. Follow Gemma’s series on facebook and instagram @ humansofthehinterland

WILD ABOUT NOOSA HINTERLAND with Tony Wellington THE Azure Kingfisher is a shy bird that doesn’t like to be watched. Found along our streams and waterways, these birds are expert fish catchers. Using a beak more than half the length of their body, they snaffle prey by diving on it from a low perch. As well as fish, these diminutive kingfishers will also consume shrimp, yabbies and other freshwater inhabitants. I watched one follow a swimming platypus, hoping for anything the mammal stirred to the surface. Azure Kingfishers form monogamous pairs. They nest in one-metre-long burrows excavated into stream embankments. It takes a pair between three and seven days to carve out their nesting burrow using their little red feet as shovels. Nesting in embankments plainly leaves the breeding process highly susceptible to flooding. A sizeable rain event during Spring and Summer can spell doom for eggs and nestlings. Climate change is thus an issue for Azure Kingfishers as weather events become increasingly severe. Although there are no population estimates for Azure Kingfishers, they are known to be declining across their range. In Tasmania they are now considered critically endangered. The problem there appears to be the introduced brown trout, which competes for the same food. Elsewhere, voracious European carp generate a similar threat. Thankfully, here in the broader Noosa hinterland, Azure Kingfishers are plentiful. But one has to be quiet and patient to observe them.

WE’VE all been there at one time or another. Whether it’s the app that just can’t load on the mobile; the Netflix that just won’t appear on the so-called smart TV screen; the laptop or iPad that takes 20 minutes to boot up. Or worse: attempting to deal with the major telcos or the NBN whose primary aim seems to be to ensure effective communication with them is about as lucky as winning the lottery. Fortunately, in Noosa Shire, there is an answer: you can Just Call Judy, owned and operated by Tinbeerwah’s Judy Ditter. Arguably, she is single-handedly improving the mental health of our region – not only by patiently solving your current problem, but equally by patiently writing out lists of steps to take - in plain English – not IT geek talk from often thousands of kilometres away. Judy is a helper and tutor in deciphering everyday technology, particularly for older people, who can find dealing with such matters not only challenging, but quite possibly frightening, or even lifethreatening. It’s a service which really should be regarded as an essential in the care industry. It has been a long road for Judy to arrive at her current, much-loved vocation. “I was born in Adelaide, and I remember as a kid always thinking I wish I was living in Sydney, as I always wanted to get into the film industry,” she said. “Actually I wanted to act first - until I got into the film industry and saw the light. “I studied drama at uni while doing a teaching degree. My parents were very keen for me not to go into the theatre; my sister had gone through NIDA and they were terrified I was going to do the same.” Page 14 | Your Local Lifestyle July 2022
Judy’s practical primary teaching career wasn’t that long. “Three days, I think.” But she was quickly offered another role – teaching teachers how to teach drama. “There was a lack of expertise in drama teaching, but it was becoming recognized as an important part of the curriculum.” A variety of other positions followed, including educational bookseller, administrator for a 20th century opera company, following on from a graduate diploma in Arts Administration– this was artsy 80s Adelaide after all – but Judy became disillusioned with the theatre and aimed for the film industry. “I constantly badgered the South Australian Film Corp and finally got a job as a third assistant director on a feature film, and from then on kept getting offers of jobs in films. “On most feature films I was an art department coordinator. “I did a Paramount production which was set in Seattle. We shot it all in Sydney, so we had to convert everything, including a bus, to left-hand drive. Street signs had to be American, and the total landscape had to mirror Seattle.” “I did get to meet all sorts of people and travel for work. I produced a documentary that was shot in Nicaragua, Belize, Guatemala and Costa Rica, for example. “Once I went sky diving with a group of stuntmen on a weekend off. Things didn’t go quite as planned, and I ended up in hospital.
“I also drove trucks, forklifts, boats, jet skis and classic old cars. It was a fun time in the film business, but now when I watch movies and they are shot in cold wet climates or on night shoots, I’m just glad I don’t do that work anymore. “I was Art Department manager on the 1989 hit movie Dead Calm, starring Nicole Kidman and Sam Neill, shot on Hamilton Island. “So much of the film was set on boats so we had to build the interiors. These were built at one third larger than reality to make shooting easier. We had to make these scenes appear as though they were shot at sea, so we built a massive pool, covered it with a shed, and created a huge rocker system. This created the illusion of being on the sea. “Hamilton Island got the pool when we wrapped the film.” It was also on the Dead Calm set that Judy first shook the hand of her future husband Tony, a first assistant director on the movie. Tony already had children and the pair wanted to find more family-friendly hours away from the movie industry’s 14-to-15 hour days. “We set up our own production company and even won a New York Film Festival award for one of our short films. “But I remember being at this party - I hate ‘networking’, it’s not in my nature – talking to a producer who was looking around to see who was more important than me that they should be talking to, and I thought ‘I’ve had enough’.
I’d always played with timber. I built my own kitchen. I built of few pieces of furniture for friends, and I loved it.
“Tony was a fabulous artist so we started a business together in the mid-1990s called Local Colour where we made corporate gifts, did trade fairs. We sold our product to David Jones, Australian Geographic stores, etc.” Eventually the family moved to Noosa, in 2001. “We did a few more documentaries here: one on Eumundi Markets, one on the Cooloola National Park and one on Noosa.” In the late 90s Tony had developed a malignant skin cancer, initially misdiagnosed. “The melanoma had metastasized – we got a second opinion six weeks later, and they said ‘we’re cutting that out now’. “The cancer had spread and Tony was given three-to-10 months to live and was told to ‘get his things in order’. “I rang a liver surgeon at PA hospital who’d done the first ever liver transplant. The melanoma unit said Tony had three lesions in his liver and basically ‘he’s gone’. The surgeon said ‘if that’s what they said it’s probably right, but come and see me’. “Tony got another scan; the oncologist at the melanoma unit said it was ‘too close to a blood supply to operate’. “The surgeon said ‘that’s not the case, I can operate, and took 65% of his liver out. “We went back to the melanoma unit, where the oncologist said, ‘I don’t know why you bothered with the surgery, it won’t extend your life any’, which infuriated me. “And here he is, 20 years later, with no sign of cancer.” Workwise, Tony went into politics and Judy said to herself, ‘What now?’ “So I started working as a handywoman and IT professional. “I had seen a story in the paper about what Sasha, aka Mrs Fixit, was doing.
“We met for coffee, and by the end of “During COVID for example, many coffee she said ‘do you want to be my people had trouble getting their vaccine business partner?’ certificates on to their phone, and also “We were dealing with all manner of dealing with My Gov.” people from wealthy, time-poor people, to With around 400 clients, clearly Judy has those wanting to learn handywoman skills tapped into a substantial niche market. themselves. YOUR SEASONAL PRODUCE WATCH with Matt Golinski CARAMBOLAS CARAMBOLAS or ‘star fruit’ as they are commonly known are native to South East Asia, but are now cultivated in many parts of the world including India, South America and Australia. These beautiful trees fruit prolifically in winter, but will often produce two to three crops a year, and in some places fruit all year round. Carambolas are best when picked bright yellow and completely ripe, as the sugars have developed and they are sweet, juicy and perfumed.
Cut in cross sections they are a perfect star shape, making them a naturally stunning garnish for fruit salads, or savoury dishes like Thai chicken or seafood salads. Dehydrating sliced up stars turns them into cute little lolly like snacks for the school lunch box. If you cook them down very slowly in sugar they turn a deep burgundy colour and can be preserved in jars like a compote. The best place to get them is direct from growers at a farmers market or good fruit shop or befriend someone who has a tree!
C A R A M B O L A TA R T TAT I N INGREDIENTS: 600gm carambolas, cut into 1cm thick stars 125gm raw sugar 30ml lime juice 30gm unsalted butter ½ tsp ground ginger 1 sheet good quality butter puff pastry METHOD: 1. Place the sugar, lime juice, butter and ground ginger in a heavy-based, oven-proof 24cm pan and cook over a low heat until the sugar has caramelised. 2. Arrange the carambolas on the caramel, cutting some slices in half and squeezing them into the gaps so the whole pan is tightly packed with fruit.
3.Cut a pastry circle to cover the carambolas, with about a centimetre of overlap around the edges. Gently lay onto the fruit, tucking the edges in so it is sealed. 4.Cut a few small holes in the pastry to let excess steam escape. 5. Bake the tart at 170°C for 35 – 40 minutes. Cool slightly before inverting carefully onto a serving plate. Serve with thick cream or ice cream.
Cauliflower
Note: If the carambolas are quite juicy you may need to pour off some of the liquid from the pan before you flip your tart. Serves 4

THE beautiful hinterland town of Eumundi retains a special character in charm and community spirit. But lately, it has been renewing itself with new, quality eateries opening and bringing a whole new meaning to fine dining in country, affordable style. One such venue is The Bungalow at the high point of the main street, Memorial Drive. Renovated throughout to catch the breezes, with a fresh white colour scheme inside, an intimate, fairy grotto-lit garden out the back, and with a big fireplace inside for the cooler nights, The Bungalow is the brainchild of Jonny and Claire Powell, who have brought a refreshing Italian/ Mediterranean menu to the locals and Noosa Shire at large. Jonny has spent 20 years in numerous hospitality venues in Sydney – and has non-culinary talents, too. “I met my wife [Claire] up here six years ago,” he said. “I used to deejay and was up here to work, and met Claire one night through mutual friends. We went back to Sydney but it was always the plan to come back – she has a big family here.”
The comeback was quicker than planned: COVID ravaged the hospitality market. The couple had married in 2019 and now had a baby. “We came back for three months – then decided to stay. We didn’t want to go back to the city.”

By Alan Lander
A deejay booking at the old business on the Bungalow site, which didn’t eventuate, gave Jonny the idea to lease the premises. “It was such a good space; I saw the potential,” he said. The Bungalow opened last November amid lingering COVID constraints but is now well on its way to a big following. “It’s Italian-Mediterranean, with our whole theme based on ‘la casa’; even though we’re in a little country town, we bring a
slice of the Mediterranean here,” Jonny said. “We’ve gone back to what we always wanted to do in the beginning. We’re doing Italian, which makes good takeaway as well: with floods and the rain we have to be bulletproof, making good comfort foods for when times aren’t great.” The Bungalow opens Wednesday to Sunday for lunch and dinner – “and maybe breakfasts soon”, Jonny said. The menu caters for the big weekend visitor market but is budget-priced for locals on weekdays – there’s a special locals’ menu night on Thursdays, and happy hour drinks on Fridays from 5pm, as it’s licensed. “We’re doing a lot of group events too: weddings, hens’ nights, baby showers, birthdays – and they all love it,” Jonny said. “What is really key for us is to provide an awesome experience, great service, taking care of people.” The Bungalow is located at 69 Memorial Drive, Eumundi, 5400 8512, or visit www.bungaloweumundi.com to see the menu.

CONSTRUCTION KICKS OFF Work to replace the existing Cooroy Belli Creek Road Bridge in Cooroy starts this month and is expected to be completed by mid-October, weather and construction conditions permitting. The current two lane timber bridge will be demolished, and a two lane concrete bridge will be built in the same location. The new bridge will have a design life of 100 years and will require less maintenance than the existing bridge, which has been identified as needing replacement due to its age and condition. Unfortunately, as is the case with most full bridge replacement projects, residents, and motorists will be impacted during construction. The existing bridge will be closed for the duration of construction and traffic detoured via Lawnville Road. To reduce the construction period and impact on the community, prefabricated elements will be used where possible. Variable Message Signs have been installed at numerous locations to provide advance warning about changed traffic conditions and alternate route. The new bridge is jointly funded by the Australian Government and Council as part of the Bridge Renewal Program.

NEW LOOK FOR KIN KIN RECREATION HALL Much loved hall renovated and ready to host community activities The 113-year-old Kin Kin Recreation Hall is now able to cater for a broader range of community activities. Thanks to $230,000 in funding from the Queensland Government’s Community Stimulus package, the hall has received a facelift including restoring the internal VJ cladding and flooring. Page 22 | Your Local Lifestyle July 2022
Resident and Past President of the Kin Kin Community Group Jann Bonsall said the revamp has reinvigorated the local community. “It’s fantastic to be able to put a new focus on the hall which will hopefully encourage more use of the facility,” she said. The hall underwent a deep clean to
remove bat faeces. External sealing of the building should prevent the future intrusion of Microbats entering the building, through small gaps and crevasses. The much-needed kitchen upgrade on the lower level involved creating a bigger space and the addition of a large stainless-steel bench.
Infrastructure Services Director Larry Sengstock said the community has waited patiently for the new improved facility. “This is now a significant community asset, and we appreciate that Kin Kin residents have been waiting for this project,” he said.
HINTERLAND SWEEPS UP GRANTS

removal program, while Noosa Environment Education Hub’s environmental board game project and an Indigenous Walk on Country event also received a cash boost.
Projects include the Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee’s Find a Frog February initiative and Waterwatch training, and a weed
Councillors approved an additional $93,551 in response to consultation on the draft budget and the high volume of applications.
“The demand for these grants highlights the breadth of hardworking environment groups we have in the shire and the many significant and ambitious projects they’re delivering to improve our environment,” Director of Environment and Sustainable Development Kim Rawlings said. Additionally, the Pomona-Cooran Amateur Rugby League Club received $16,959.83 from Community Project Grants for equipment to purchase white goods. Lake MacDonald Rowing Club received $14,000 to purchase rowing boats. A log collection trailer was funded by this year’s project grants for Cooroora Woodworkers for $13,000.00. Men’s Shed in Pomona was supported this year with 10,940.00 to purchase additional equipment. And Cooroy Gymnastics will be able to purchase a gymnastic vaulting table and rail with the $9,000.00 they received. Ms Rawlings said council was also providing $254,000 this year through the Multi-Year Environmental Collaborative Grants program. The grant program is designed to help organisations to continue their vital role within the hinterland community.
UPGRADE A TREAT FOR HORSES AND RIDERS
Renewal work on the Cooran horse yards improves trail hub facilities Work on the Cooran Horse Yards is finished. The existing yard structures have been replaced with more durable treated hardwood posts and galvanised cattle rail. A section of the external fence, badly damaged during the major weather events earlier this year, has been renewed including new front and back gates plus restoration of all flooddamaged sections. According to Infrastructure Services Project Manager, Aiden Flannery the facility now boasts two large holding yards plus seven individually gated stalls, providing increased capacity to hold horses whilst riders visit the Cooran town
centre or simply stop and rest during a ride. “The project also includes replacement of the existing shelter, which is
deteriorating and no longer fit for purpose for our horse-riding community. Construction of the shelter is expected to commence shortly,” he said. “This renewal will improve trail hub facilities for horse riders and provide a secure yard to temporarily hold horses before and after riding the popular Trail 5. The Cooran Horse Yard renewal is part of the Trail 5 Upgrade Project which links Pomona to Cooran via the Tuchekoi National Park.” The project is funded through the jointly funded CommonwealthState Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).
IN BRIEF Businesses valued The importance of local business ranked highly in our Liveability Survey. So in response to the public submission 2022-23 Budget process, council has allocated $125,000 in additional funding to accelerate the delivery of critical economic development projects. In partnership with the Noosa Chamber of Commerce and business precincts, a pilot Adopt-aworker program will be trialled to address the local affordable housing accommodation for workers. An Industry and Employment Activation Plan will analyse current trends and further develop industries and sectors to create employment opportunities. Funding has also been allocated to develop a Noosa Investment Attraction Strategy.
WAHPUNGA LANE BRIDGE Following delays caused by two significant flooding events in late February and May, piling activities, to protect the road and bridge from long-term erosion and support the bridge foundation have now restarted. Precast concrete components such as concrete deck units, kerbs and headstocks have been constructed offsite and are ready to be delivered onsite in coming weeks. The revised construction schedule has the bridge being completed and the road reopened to traffic by midAugust. Detours remain in place until then. The new bridge is jointly funded by the Australian Government and Council as part of the Bridge Renewal Program.

IT was perfect – until it all fell apart. Miller, Ash and Olly were always the best of friends, growing up in the idyllically named Wonderland, a Quaker town in middle America. When they finish school in the early 1980’s the three of them travel across country to LA, establishing a successful record label, until finally, a combination of youth, bravado and poor communication leads to a breakdown of their friendship. Miller and Ash return to Wonderland to raise their son Nate, leaving Olly in LA with control of the business. However, Olly has been lurching from one bad relationship and bad business decision to the next, and attempts, unsuccessfully to end his life. While recovering in hospital he decides to try to figure out what went wrong all those years ago and to see if he can once again find his purpose. Olly returns to Wonderland, where Miller and Ash are having some issues of their own. With a host of quirky characters, including aging Aunt Tassie who believes she is a character from a Herman Melville novel; Rodrigo, an eccentric movie director in town to film his adaptation of Moby Dick; Nate’s next door neighbour Suki and his best friend Cam, who are both trying to figure out their places in life, but with very different outcomes; and Blue, an impulsive, passionate singer who happens to be Olly’s ex. This is Gonna End in Tears, by Liza Klaussmann shows us what can happen when we are so caught up in our own lives that we fail to notice what else might be falling apart.

Comes to Good Shepherd CONSIDER yourself at home when Good Shepherd Lutheran College brings to life Oliver JR! the classic Broadway Junior version of Lionel Bart’s classic musical based on Charles Dickens’, Oliver Twist. Rehearsals are well under way for the College’s junior musical which has been in the making since last year. The story begins in Victorian London when an orphaned and mistreated Oliver becomes the neglected apprentice of an undertaker. Oliver escapes and is taken in by a rag tag group of misfits led by the scheming and charismatic Fagin. He finds acceptance amongst this group of petty thieves. When Oliver is accused of a crime he didn’t commit he is taken in by the kind hearted Mr Brownlow. Navigating London’s underworld Oliver searches for a home and a family and most importantly - love. With timeless songs and an
enthusiastic junior cast Oliver JR! will delight. Mr Jim Tomkins and Mrs Kirsten Lee, junior musical directors, are excited to bring this well-loved story to the Noosa community. “A big and enthusiastic chorus will inspire with their singing and dancing as Victorian London is recreated at Good Shepherd Lutheran College. who calls Eumundi home and is passionate about all things community. “Sunshine Sounds is a truly special little festival that really brings people together,” says Katie. “There’s a real sense of communityconnection, welcoming music lovers, and indeed performers, of all ages and stages.” Katie says a key element of the 2022 festival is the inclusion of Eumundi School of Rock in the program. “Eumundi School of Rock is a super special free education and mentorship program for young musos from 8 to 17 years.” “The Friday program sees four Eumundi School of Rock bands play live on the big stage, performing alongside none other than rock god himself Tim Rogers, frontman for You Am I”, she says. “Three of our brilliant past students – Lochie Kapper on guitar, Niamh Stevens
on bass and Dexter Hurren on drums – will be backing Tim himself, and to close the concert, all the 2022 rockers will rock out in an epic 26-piece band with Tim!” “The Saturday program includes our Sunshine Sounds Community Choir, where festival-goers get to join in what promises to be a goosebumps-inducing group singsong for all ages and abilities,” Katie says. Pre-festival choir rehearsals will be held in the Eumundi CWA Hall on July 10, 17 and 24 for those keen to get involved. Gates open 4.30pm on Friday. On Saturday, gates open at 11am. ARTWORK submitted to the Mary Valley Art Festival will be judged by three accomplished figures in the Queensland art sector – landscape artist Brent Harvey, Gympie award-winner Kym Barrett and fine art critic Kaye Cathro. New Zealand born artist Brent Harvey is now based on the Sunshine Coast. He is perhaps best known for his realistic coastal landscape paintings and has also enjoyed acclaim as a bird painter and in portraiture. Winner of the 2021 Flying Arts Queensland Regional Arts Award Kym Barrett is a painter living and working in Chatsworth, Gympie. She primarily paints with oils and cold wax on board, making abstract paintings that aim to evoke aspects of the landscape imbued with aliveness and mystery. Sunshine Coast readers will recognise Kaye Cathro as the founder of Lasting Impressions Gallery of Fine Arts, which operated for 30 years in Kenilworth and gained an Australia-wide reputation for showcasing some of Australia’s finest artists and craftspeople. The judges will have a hard time selecting winners across 10 categories at the Mary Valley Art Festival, which is held from July 21-24 at the Imbil Public Hall, near Gympie, South-East Queensland. Alex Lloyd – live and amazing Supported by Declan Kelly SINGER songwriter Alex Lloyd will return to the stage on Friday July 22 in The Brewery at The Imperial Hotel Eumundi, performing with his Live & Amazing Australian tour. The multi-platform ARIA award-winning musician will bring all his hits to the stage for one incredible night of music singing and nostalgia. These amazing tunes will come to life through a tapestry of soulful singing, masterful playing and clever arrangements. Music runs through Declan Kelly’s blood. It’s been a part of him since the very beginning. With an Irish father and a Maori mother, herself a talented musician, he was encouraged to learn the drums and guitar at a young age. His music is heavily influenced by the mix of cultures - weaving together story telling
ST I L L R U N N I N G – D O C U M E N TA RY P R E M I E R E Still Running is a one hour documentary that tells the story of Pomona’s legendary King of the Mountain race from its humble beginnings in the 1950s, through to the huge festival that changed the hinterland town forever. Follow the journey of competitors who dare to tackle Mount Cooroora and discover why this magnificent mountain continues to inspire and how the community comes together to keep this brilliantly brutal race, Still Running. Local filmmaker, Jacob Schiotz, attended his first King of the Mountain festival in 2015 and was immediately
drawn to the spirit of the event. “I’d heard about this crazy race, and I just went along for a look. Before I knew it, I was leaning over the barriers and cheering all the runners with everyone else – it was really emotional. It was a story I felt compelled to tell,” said Jacob. Jacob got in contact with the King of the Mountain Committee and with support from the Cooroy-Pomona Lions Club, production began in 2019. Dan King, Race Director comments “It was an easy decision to invest time and energy into supporting the documentary. This is an event for the community,

Declan spent much of the 2020/21 lockdown period in his studio working on a new album, produced by Justin Stanley (Prince, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Nikka Costa) due for release later in 2022. organised by the community and held in a community that cherishes the importance of local contribution.” But, then 2020 happened. Jacob remembers “We were just gearing up to start filming with competitors in the 2020 race when everything was cancelled. It was touch and go if the film would even keep going.” 2021 came with cautious optimism and with plenty of restrictions still in place, production slowly started up again. Dan said “The community was ready for the race to come back and somehow we found a way to make it work. 2021 turned out to be a great event and we were lucky to have the documentary crew there to capture it.” With help from the Noosa Museum,
Dan King & Jacob Schiotz
Jacob has also digitized countless hours of archival footage to help relive the rich history of the event. Still Running premieres at the Majestic Theatre, Pomona on race day, Sunday July 24. Tickets $10 now on sale from www.majestictheatre.com.au

Three Williamsons re-united Australia’s most prolific playwright and Noosa Arts Theatre patron David Williamson and sons Rory and Felix are again joining forces with Noosa Arts Theatre to bring one of David’s best loved plays to the stage in July. Money and Friends, which runs at Noosa Arts from July 21-August 13, is set in a fictional coastal town called ‘Crystal Inlet’ where a group of friends confront how much their friendships are truly worth. As one of the main characters states “If friendship had any reality, money would be the test”. This highly entertaining and insightful clash between commercialism and ideals makes Money and Friends as relevant today as when it broke box office records in the 1990s. NIDA-trained Rory and Felix Williamson will be sharing their skills with the local cast and crew as director and actor respectively as they did last year with David’s outrageous comedy Up for Grabs. This year, Felix will also be running workshops for directors and actors. Felix has starred in productions for Sydney Theatre Company, State Theatre of SA, Bell Shakespeare and Sydney’s Ensemble Theatre and in television series such as Underbelly, Wentworth, Rake, also playing former PM Paul Keating in the mini-series Hawke. The local cast includes Zoe Griffen, Jo Hendrie, Frank Wilkie, Patrick Reed, Yannick Marot, Sepi Burgiani, Rebecca
Felix Williamson
Munasinghe and Jackson O’Sullivan. Theatre spokesperson Maria Karambelas said Noosa’s community theatre was fortunate to have David as patron and opportunities for aspiring actors and directors to learn from industry professionals, such as Rory and Felix. “The ultimate goal is our audience’s enjoyment, and a show like Money and Friends is a great way to have some fun after a few tough years.” Warning: This show contains adult content and themes and the easily offended must not attend. The play opens July 21 and runs until August 13. Bookings www.noosaartstheatre.org.au or 5449 9343.

‘THE MAGPIE TOTEM’ - ARTISTS GIFT TO HOLA Eumundi’s boutique hotel accommodation HOLA (House of Local Art) supported and commissioned a wealth of local Sunshine Coast creatives in curating the hotel’s impressive art collection. In a generous return of favour, a collective of local artists have now collaborated to create and gift the hotel a special work of thanks – The Magpie Totem. There are 45 original artworks hanging on the walls of HOLA, more than 100 individual ceramic pieces and 13 sculptures and installations. As a thank you to HOLA for their support, five artists from Noosa Open Studios – Kerry Norman, Lisa Jones, Carol Watkins, Jo Cook and Sue Boyd (pictured)– came together to reciprocate the favour, resulting in the sculptural work entitled Magpie Totem that has now been installed in the hotel grounds. www.holaeumundi.com.au

This exhibition is a collection of original pen and ink drawings done in the style of Victorian era illustrative artist Aubrey Vincent Beardsley. Whilst some artists see these massive shapes as lures, others are just as fascinated with the bold colours and lines found closer to home. Mountain Stories is an exhibition by a group of local Sunshine Coast artists who call themselves The Outsiders Art Circle. The group present a diverse body of painterly works and earthy ceramics that illustrate a range of approaches from abstraction to the figurative. The works reveal the struggle each of the artists must face as they place themselves within the landscape and deal with the dominance of the mountain.
Abstraction, on the other hand, compromises a series of large scale bold and colorful machined abstract textile works which appear domestically comfortable but are nevertheless complex and challenging. Each of the four artists featured in this exhibition have studied under seminal US textile artist Nancy Crow. Both exhibitions run from July 22 to August 28. During this exhibition period from August 2 – 19, the Butter Factory artist in residence is Naida Ginnane. Naida is developing a body of work which explores the idea of environmental distortion. The birth of the Magic Of Voice Eumundi (MOVE Choir) IT wasn’t until I was in my early forties that I was trundled off somewhat reluctantly to a community choir by one of my girlfriends who had been pestering me for six months to attend. Within a few sessions I was really hooked…hooked on the feeling good that went with it. It was a bit of a dark time in my life then and going to choir was an unexpected highlight of my week. Each time I went (and there were plenty of times I truly didn’t feel like it) within 20 minutes or so, I felt happy and like myself again. After gaining a new perspective on life, greater confidence and making new friends through choir, it became obvious to me that singing in a choir was not just a flash in the pan and it was a component that I needed. The natural progress was to share the benefits and joy of one of life’s simple pleasures with others. And that is the short version of how it all began.
After 13 years as an active choir director in the Bli Bli and Pomona communities, I decided (with help from a pandemic) that I would be happier working in my own community of Eumundi. The rest is history and every Tuesday we get together to sing, laugh, share and connect with a broad demographic of beautiful humans that are also ‘hooked’. MOVE is a community choir, open to anyone between 14 and 114. No audition or experience is required, a sense of humour and flexibility is beneficial as is enjoying multiple musical genres. If you want to have fun and possess a bit of patience you’re in! And that’s about it really…shower and car singers welcome! Joanne Deguara CWA Hall, 78 Memorial Drive, Eumundi. S A N D Y B O LT O N THE return of sunshine radiated into a month of joyful occasions! At our Noosa Qld Day Awards, we recognised Noosans who go above and beyond, giving back to our community through voluntary services! Always such a special night, with 39 recipients acknowledged, all of whom I finally got to congratulate with a hug after 2 years of COVID-19 restrictions! Thanks again to all our worthy recipients who do so much for our community, and to Cooroy RSL who have become a sponsor of this annually! We also were excited to notify the not-for-profit organisations who were successful in their applications for our Seeds for Change grants! To find out who was successful and their initiatives, head to my Facebook page at https://www. facebook.com/SandyBoltonNoosa. The cleanup of the polystyrene from the floods is an ongoing issue and the vacuum deployed by Noosa Council has been busy at work trying to rectify the situation! Next month, Council will be hosting a round table to discuss the issue and future measures, alongside Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) and the Department of Environment and Science (DES) - we will update to 360 the key outcomes. In response to our 3 years of advocacy, the CSIRO have released a research paper on the dioxin testing of Noosa River. The paper indicated that there is a strong correlation between our dioxins which have a unique ‘signature’ and the amount of kaolinitic clay in the sediment samples. If you are interested in reading, please head to 360 at www.sandybolton.com. At time of writing, I am in Parliament trawling through the pages of the justreleased QLD 22-23 budget. It was wonderful that one of our relentless advocacies regarding the School Transport Assistance Subsidy (STAS) has been successful, and will now include students from shared care arrangement families. My usual summary of my ‘trawling’s’ will be posted to Noosa 360 at www.sandybolton. com/noosa360/. R O B S K E LT O N NICKLIN RECEIVES RECORD FUNDING IN QLD BUDGET
The Queensland State Budget was handed down last month by the Palaszczuk Labor Government. I’m thankful we have received record level funding across the Nicklin electorate including $11.7 million to go towards school infrastructure, delivering new halls at Noosa District State High, Burnside State High, and Yandina State School. We’re also spending $1.7 million to refurbish classrooms at Noosa District State High, Nambour State College, Woombye State School, and Burnside State School. The new $9 million Nambour Police Station will be opening any day now and $4 million has been put aside to start on replacing the Cooroy Police Station. Our RFS units have received a boost in funding to $62 million annually which means new stations and facilities, as well as the installation of cabin deluge systems for around 200 medium attack appliances, co-designed with the Rural Fire Brigades Association Queensland. This is a budget that delivers for the people of Nicklin ensuring we have good jobs, better services, and a great lifestyle. COMMUNITY CENTRE FUNDING
Earlier this year the Community Support and Services committee - of which I’m a member - recommended the Government increase the base level of funding to neighbourhood and community centres. I’m pleased to say the government
State Member for Nicklin
has listened and delivered on the recommendation increasing base funding from $124,000 to $230,000 per annum, resulting in an extra $106,000 per year! This additional funding allows centres to hire new staff, buy equipment and deliver additional services and support for people who need it most – including those experiencing domestic and family violence, social isolation and loneliness, homelessness, and financial stress. For vulnerable people in our community, this support can be life changing. H E A LT H F U N D I N G
We’re putting the health of Queenslanders first and foremost with our record investment in health of $23.6 billion. Delivering three new hospitals, a new Queensland Cancer Centre, 11 hospital expansion projects across Queensland, 2,200 new beds, new doctors, and nurses, we’re supporting our frontline heroes to get their jobs done. This includes $1.64 billion over five years to improve mental health and wellbeing and combat substance abuse, representing the single largest investment in Mental Health in our State’s history It will focus on rehabilitation care, additional community care units, adolescent day programs and Step-Up StepDown services to help people transition out of our hospital system or avoid it in the first instance altogether. Council is also providing an additional $254,000 during the 2022/23 financial year through the Multi-Year Environmental Collaborative Grants program. It’s been all about the budget over the past few months, and highlights include a $42 million capital works program, a $117 million operating budget and a modest surplus to remain financially sustainable. The $42 million capital program includes $17 million for the road and transport network, a $5.3million reseal program, $5.3 million for bridges plus $1 million
worth of stormwater upgrades, $4.4million for parks, playgrounds and sports fields and $1.9 million for hinterland pathways and boardwalks. Key budget initiatives include affordable housing investigations and continued advocacy, improved service levels for hinterland road verge mowing and pathway cleaning, continuations of the Go Noosa free weekend bus trial and continuation of Living Well Noosa program across the Shire, plus development of the new Corporate Plan and Destination Management Plan. Council greatly appreciates the input from everyone who took the time to have a say during the budget consultation period. Until next month, stay safe, Clare

PTSD Dogs Australia’s 4th Birthday celebration and fundraiser High Tea for the Hounds held last Friday at Noosa Golf Club was a howling success! The morning kicked off with Brisbane entertainer John Reid, aka Australia’s favourite housewife ‘Dame Edna’, greeting patrons with her trademark Gladioli, generally creating havoc and singing up a storm before waving goodbye and leaving them wanting more, with her raucous rendition of Doris Day’s classic hit Que Sera Sera! Then it was on to the serious business of raising awareness of PTSD and how it impacts on our huge community of Veterans and First Responders. The Sunshine Coast has one of the highest populations in Australia of retired Armed Services Personnel and First Responders, which is why the charity chose to base themselves here 4 years ago. PTSD DOGS AUSTRALIA are a local not-for-profit organization based at Cooroy, who rescue dogs from pounds and shelters, and train them to become loyal and supportive Assistance Dogs to assist the many Veterans and First Responders suffering the debilitating effects of PostTraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). NUTRITION with Sarah Gray WEIGHING IN!
SCALES, you either love them or you hate them. Personally, I believe they are overrated. At least half of my clients are hoping to shed some unwanted kgs, and the scales can be their worst nightmare. My recommendation to them is ditch the scales - they will do your head in. Why are scales so inaccurate? Actually, most of them aren’t. It is your body that is fluctuating, and this can be caused by a gain in muscle mass, fluid retention, how much water you’re drinking, whether you are eating enough food and the list goes on. Oh, and scales can be particularly cruel to women at certain times of the month.
Stepping onto scales is not a healthy or accurate way of measuring your overall health. Stress is a major factor in shedding weight and weighing in can act as a catalyst towards unhealthy eating habits. A much more accurate and reliable way of judging a decrease or increase in your weight is your clothing. Find that favourite pair of jeans, top, or a bikini that may have been hiding in the closet and use them as a guide. Let them be the judge as to whether your body shape has changed for the better or the worse. It’s a real thrill noticing your clothes are getting looser. Alternately if they are getting tighter, they are speaking to you and strongly suggesting that you take stock of your food intake. It is not surprising that on the other end of the scale we have the individuals who weigh themselves every day. Sometimes morning and night. There are those that are a little more controlled and weigh just once a week. It is a habit they cannot live without, it keeps them focused and motivated. Whatever way you chose to monitor your weight be kind to yourself. Even on your worst day you are a living miracle. Love your food. www.foodtrition.com.au or facebook@foodtrition1

Amama walking track AMAMOOR STATE FOREST
FINALLY the sun is out and the tracks are drying up. Set in Amamoor State Forest, this trail is only 20 minutes from the Puma service station at Traveston. The drive out is lovely passing farms, locals on horseback and a couple of little road side stalls. It really gives you that country feeling. The trail starts across the road from the Amama day use area and there are a few options for this hike. All start together, so it’s really up to you how far you would like to venture. The challenging grade 4 trail is 2.2kms and takes about 2hrs return. This loop will take you past Diamondfield Lookout which is quite picturesque. There are a few creek crossings and about 200m of rock hopping. One of the signs was not that clear - I always take a photo of the map located at the start of the trail so I can refer to it if needed. I took my granddaughter Bonnie in a carrier and would only recommend this for experienced hikers. Kids could definitely do it, but must be able to follow instructions. The water is crystal clear and flowing nicely at the moment, the canopy of the trees is keeping it quite cool. The Cascades is 1.2km and there’s nothing better than being in a rain forest in the rain. The leaves glisten on the vines, as they drape over the landscape and the mossy rocks look soft and mystical. I love the droplets of water sitting on the tiniest of fungi which was abundant when I was there with Bella. Platypus have been spotted as well as goanna, frogs, birds and the familiar bush turkey. As you reach the Cascades you will come across an amazing Bunya Tree, with marks Indigenous Australians made for toe holds so they could climb up the tree to reach the Bunya Nuts. The Cascades are very pretty. Sit and listen to the water running over the rocks, relaxing taking in the nature around you. Fig Tree circuit is 800m and is a part of the Macadamia walk. You do have a couple
of creek crossings and get to walk through a magnificent Fig tree. This little walk is popular with the puppies, but remember they must be on a leash. Macadamia walk is 540m and new signs have been put in so you can easily spot the Bauple nut trees, more commonly known as Macadamia nut trees. Macadamia species evolved in Australia about 30 million years ago. We are so lucky to have one of the largest remaining wild habitats growing in this beautiful rainforest. The flowering trees invite native bees, sulphurcrested cockatoos and yellow-tail black cockatoos. At the day use area there is short walk along the creek, and it’s suitable for swimming in the warmer weather with sheltered picnic tables and clean toilets. I’ve been a couple of times now, and this is definitely one of my fav’s. If you go on a Sunday and time it right you can visit the little market and see the steam train at the Amamoor Station. The Kandanga Hotel is only 7kms from Amamoor for a great lunch. Remember plenty of water, sunscreen and hat. Happy Hiking

BUILDING RESILIENCE FOR BUSHFIRE AFFECTED COMMUNITIES IN NOOSA SHIRE THE University of Southern Queensland has partnered with Zero Emissions Noosa Inc., Noosa Council and Noosa Environmental Education Hub (Noosa EEHub) in a project designed to improve emergency evacuation shelter experiences for future evacuees. In the 2019 bushfires, thousands of Noosa Shire residents were forced to evacuate their homes. Many residents sought refuge at emergency evacuation shelters at The J and Noosa Leisure Centre. University of Southern Queensland’s Dr Carina Anderson is leading the project. “Australia is facing more natural disasters due to climate change and an increase in extreme weather events,” Dr Anderson said. “In 2019, we had the Noosa bushfires, and then more recently the major flooding in Queensland and New South Wales. “More natural disasters will mean an increasing reliance on evacuation centres.
“Our project aims to make evacuation centres physically and psychologically safer places to stay during times of natural disasters.” Annie Nolan Carbon Reduction Project Officer from Noosa Council said: “As part of this project, two battery systems supplementing the existing solar arrays will be installed: one at The J and one at the Noosa Leisure Centre. “It is important to have sustained power to evacuation shelters. “During natural disasters such as bushfires, electricity from the grid may be cut and the batteries provide emission free power rather than having to bring in a diesel generator at the evacuation shelters. “These battery systems will secure an ongoing power supply to the evacuation centres during emergencies.” Zero Emissions Noosa president Anne Kennedy explained “This project will
help to reduce emissions in the Noosa Shire. “The battery systems will be installed on Noosa Shire Council community buildings, so it’s a win for the community and a win for the environment.” Noosa EEHub managing director Dalia Mikhail said “Giving students a real-life application of their curriculum through this project is an exciting opportunity for our local students.” The Building resilience for bushfire affected communities in Noosa Shire project is made possible thanks to funding from the Australian Government for the Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Grants Program.

Supporting permaculture projects IN February this year, Permaculture Noosa hosted the legend Morag Gamble for club night. She spoke to a full house about permaculture as a lifestyle - a lifestyle of regenerative thinking and not accepting the destructive ways of the extractive paradigm. She said, “Permaculture is a revolution dressed up as gardening.” Morag works with the Ethos Foundation which supports permaculture projects in refugee camps in Africa. The club raised $1500 on the night for this cause. Recently Morag sent this letter to Permacutlure Noosa: I want to thank you so very very much for organising such a wonderful fundraiser that has made a huge difference in the lives of many people in the camps of Kakuma and Kalobeyei Refugee Settlements in north western Kenya. Koalas will benefit from 100 new trees planted in the Noosa National Park this week. The planting event was the highest auction prize sold at last year’s Noosa Biosphere Wild Koala Gala, generously donated by Land & Sea Brewery. Symposium for future THE Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation (NBRF), in association with Country Noosa and Noosa & District Landcare convened a Stakeholder Symposium on June 11 in Pomona with a focus on establishing the region’s priorities and action plan for a Noosa & Region Agri-Hub. It was a day of productive discussion and shared ideas with attendees first hearing from speakers on a range of topics before workshops commenced. While still in its consultation phase, it will be weeks before the outcomes from the Symposium are analysed, however Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation Chair, Rowan Rafferty is positive an Agri-Hub action plan will bring landholders and farmers together and provide pathways
for young farmers and entrepreneurs to leverage food and agri-tourism opportunities. “Connecting community, supporting agricultural enterprise, and building food resilience in the Noosa Biosphere Reserve and surrounding region are our top priorities,” he said. “Once we have put all the responses together and sought feedback from participants, we will share the outcomes with the greater community.” For more information visit www.noosabiosphere.org.au.

Noosa Landcare supported the planning, the planting and supplied the plants and equipment for the day and will undertake maintenance on the site to ensure the planting is successful. KIN KIN COMMENTATORS C L A S S I C C O M E D Y C AT C H E S
By Alan Lander
NO CRICKET match can be complete without its commentators. And the annual Kin Kin Pink Stumps fundraising match, held on June 5, again benefited from the august presence of its microphone wielders Chris Fuller and Scott Cairns. For those new to the shire, Kin Kin’s population is only slightly larger in number than the potholes encountered on the roads to the tiny township, courtesy of a local quarry, but its members are larger than life. And what Chris and Scott may lack in detailed cricket research, they make up for in their knowledge of local folk willing to don a red tutu in order to bat for the home team. The pair spoke to YLL just before the match, where they were first asked how many games they’ve covered. “It could be between five and eight … I’ll go six,” Chris said. “Halfway between five and eight - we’ll go with that,” Scott added, thus confirming their numerical skills for what was to come. “We actually had a professional the very first year, but we didn’t need him,” Chris said, lining up the Wide World of Sports theme on his phone for the intro broadcast. The pair subscribe more to the Roy and HG commentary style over Benaud and Lawrie.
Photos: Alan Lander
“We’re more observational commentators, I’d say, coming from a street cricket background,” Chris said. Scott added “And our knowledge is based more on the Kin Kin locals, and the antics they get up to”. That could perhaps be, er, revealing at times, your correspondent suggests. “What was it, three years ago, we had a streaker across the field; that was revealing,” Scott said. “She was a local girl; she popped out of the pub, took her gear off and ran across in front of the councillors.”
“I’d forgotten about that; you’ve just put it back in my head, Scott,” Chris lamented. It was some of the younger kids’ introduction to the female anatomy, with subsequent counselling; more of an educational event, Scott offered contemplatively. Chris suggested – inaccurately, it turned out, but why spoil a good story? – that council had only won one of these matches. But that win had been a ‘cunning plan’ to garner council funding for an aquatic centre for the town, countered Scott. “If you’re familiar with that horse trough
in front of the skate park - that’s our Kin Kin Aquatic Centre,” he said, pointing across the oval. “Locals come to frolic in it on Sundays. With adults it only gets up to their knees, but small kids can get up to their necks. “It’s a little rugged - nothing like the Noosa Aquatic Centre – so we were encouraging councillors to look at that and that’s why we let them slide through for the win.” The locals did indeed defeat the council team again, by 144 runs to 128. And it was all in a good cause, with nearly $4000 raised to donate to the McGrath Foundation for breast cancer research. Interestingly, fast-bowling legend Glenn McGrath, who founded the charity on behalf of his late wife Jane, has recently moved to Noosa Shire. He was unavailable to attend the fundraiser but did send his best wishes for the event. He may make an appearance in 2023. You just never know with Kin Kin.

MOST sports have basic techniques that you need to build skills from and mountain biking is no exception. So today let’s have a look at some of mountain biking’s basics. First and foremost, whenever you are headed downhill it is important to have an active stance on your bike. An active stance is a position that tells your body ‘I’m ready’, a bit like a martial arts stance or ‘I’m ready to receive a tennis serve’. How to do this on a mountain bike, well lets start at the bottom, yes literally your bottom and it needs to be off the saddle. You need to be standing on level pedals so that your bum is hovering above your saddle, if your pedals are in the up down position you will not be balanced and you won’t have any saddle clearance. Note that there are advanced cornering techniques that require up and down pedals, but for now lets keep it simple. Your knees will be bent and opened a little to give you a good wide & balanced stance, plus your heals should be dropped a little to give you a solid connection to your pedals. This last tip is important as you only have four points of contact with your bike when descending a trail and loosing any of them can have nasty consequences. Now lets talk about the other end, your hands, arms and head. Both hands on the handle bars with index finger (and middle finger if you prefer) covering your brake levers. Elbows will be bent and out, not down, and likewise your wrists should not be dropped. This will have you bending at the waist quite a lot, your back will likely be at 45 degrees or lower. Last but not least is your head and most importantly where your eyes will be looking. Beginners tend to
focus on the trail right in front of their wheel, when they should be scanning up and down the trail ahead. This gives your brain time to plan your route over or around the next rock or hole or corner or root or rut. If we haven’t planned for it till its almost upon us things will likely go bad very quickly, so looking well down the trail and to where you want to go is highly recommended. Yes you are likely to have a crash now and again so wearing protection is a good idea. Obviously a quality helmet is important, one that is designed for mountain biking is best. Gloves are essential as they help with grip and protect hands. Knee and elbow pads are wise. Also one that is often overlooked are specific mountain bike shoes. These will have sturdy uppers for protection and importantly, have stiff and sticky soles that will grip your pedals. Your hands and feet are your only connection to your bike so quality gloves and shoes can make a big difference to your control. Please note that these few tips are a very general introduction to mountain biking skills and by no means comprehensive. Having a friend, you trust, show you the ropes and lead you down suitable trails is a great way to get started. Another option is to hire an accredited coach, these can often be found through your LBS (local bike shop), yet another reason to support your local bike shop crew. Hope to see you on the trails! THIS year marks the 25th anniversary of the Noosa Hillclimb being held on Gyndier Drive at Tewantin. Hillclimb racing involves drivers competing against the clock for the fastest individual time on an uphill course and, winding its way up the range through the National Park, Gyndier Drive is ideally suited to the purpose. Up until the late 1970s, it was part of the main road between Tewantin and Cooroy, but other than for the Hillclimb, it’s now closed to motorised traffic. To celebrate the anniversary, the Noosa
Beach Classic Car Club is running a two round Hillclimb Championship Series on the 1.5km Gyndier Drive Course. The first event in the series, the Winter Hillclimb, was held on June 4-5 and has been hailed as a great success. Over 130 drivers competed in wide variety of cars, ranging from production road cars to purpose-built race cars. A capacity crowd of spectators attended to take in all the action, as the drivers vied both for places in their various categories, and for outright honours. The outright winner was local Noosa Beach Classic Car
Club member, Scott Bingham, driving his Minetti SS-V1. The Hillclimb is run on a volunteer basis by Club members with the support of local sponsors. The major sponsor of the Winter event was Reed & Co Estate Agents. Adrian Reed, Founder and Director of the company, competed himself and took out fourth fastest outright time in his Audi S5. The second round in the celebratory Hillclimb Championship Series will be held on October 22-23. More information about it and the Noosa Hillclimb www.noosahillclimb.com.au

THE 43RD ANNUAL K I N G O F T H E M O U N TA I N AS organisers race to complete preparations for Pomona’s big event of the year – the grueling run up and down 439m Mt Cooroora – one thing is certain. The annual race to the top and back will be more difficult and will set new records, but not necessarily shorter times. That’s because the race will start from a new location in 2022 and will follow a different path, testing participants’ endurance like never before. Due to changes required by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, the King of the Mountain runners, and the general public, are no longer able to use the trail between the base of the mountain and where the metal stairs start. The decision was made to protect the mountain after severe erosion.
The new start point is Hospital Street at the top of Stan Topper Park. Come along with you chairs, picnic blankets and enjoy local entertainment The Vibe on the Pomona IGA main stage from 11.30am, animal farm and pony rides from 11.30am, and sand sculpture and sand play from 1am. Checkout the vintage cars at the car display and the historical engines from 11am. The event program also includes the Pomona Fire Station open day and demonstration starting at 12pm. The King of the Mountain event has been immortalised in film, screening at The Majestic Theatre from 10am. The 43rd annual King of the Mountain event in Pomona is being held on Sunday July 24. www.kingofthemountain.com.au
