The ‘Wagyu of pork’ B E L L E V I L L A FA R M I S A P E AC E F U L , B U C O L I C P L AC E . EVEN if the 300-odd hectares of two combined farms contains cousins Dean and Mason Mayne, their partners Krystal and Kate, six kids (three each), dogs and cats, cattle, 50 sheep, 300 pigs and 2000 chickens. Together they make up the home of the chemical-free food grower Piggy in the Middle Farms just outside Kilkivan. “We started out in Central Queensland, where we grew up,” Mason said. “We were part of a family partnership, parents and grandparents - we’d always be together working. “I had a few sheep and pigs. I was processing them for ourselves and the family.” “We decided to come down this way for the climate, and to be closer to markets, as there were far fewer people up there. “Deano had pigs, I had sheep, now down here we’re into everything.” Growing up in Central Queensland, Dean said “We were broadacre farmers, with lots of chemicals. “That was one of the advantages in coming down here, to be chemical-free. “Now there are no hormones, no antibiotics in our feed. “There are no yolk enhancers in our laying-hens’ feed – it’s just as natural as we can get it and the animals really benefit from it as well as us and the consumers.” The farm is totally free-range. “I saw the way we had been farming, the land was deteriorating, and I started searching for a way that we could regenerate the land,” Mason said. “I came across a few different people doing a few different things. “These were farmers operating around the world, so I started down the path of regenerative farming, by having the animals and moving them around. “We started seeing the benefits of the land, also the animals and the quality of the meat. “So the idea, when we moved down here, was to run pigs, sheep and chickens for meat, also eggs, and we set it up in 2016. “All our pigs, sheep and chickens are free to forage on natural pastures every day of their lives. “Because we practice rotational grazing, our animals are constantly moving away from their droppings and onto fresh pasture, which they love. “The heritage breed pigs have fresh water and muddy wallows always available, and our Dorper sheep are totally free ranging and 100% grass-fed, while the chickens are on fresh open pasture scratching and aerating the topsoil as they go.” Mason and Krystal’s passion for the land led them to explore the concept of holistic grazing methods. Seeing the benefits to both animals and pastures led them to investigate conventional beef production; not only where food was produced, but the journey it made to the consumer.
For Dean and Kate, some food allergies meant they wanted to question the food their young family consumed. Because of his interest in heritage breed pigs and a background in butchery, Dean began to produce healthier alternatives for the family. His chemical-, nitrateand gluten-free meats and smallgoods were soon in demand with extended family and friends. Regenerative agricultural practices were fundamental to their approach to farming, he said, so they employ systems that aimed to strengthen the health and vitality of the soils. “This is because healthy soils produce healthy, mineral rich grasses - which in turn produces healthy livestock. “As well as regenerating topsoil, these systems increase biodiversity, improve water cycles, enhance ecosystem services and support bio sequestration. “As a result, they also increase the farms’ resilience to increasing climate fluctuations.” Dean said he was often asked “what makes our pork taste so good”. “It’s not only that our animals are raised on pasture - : our pork is heritage-bred.

Clu b P iggy Meatbox De li very “While these breeds take longer to raise, it’s well worth the wait. “There’s more flavour and tenderness. “Chefs often refer to it as the wagyu of the pork world.” The team has also developed and built a processing facility on the farm. “We process all our meat and products and we’ve got a smoker there as well so we do all our own nitrate-free smoked bacon and ham, and a lot of smallgoods as well,” Mason said. “A lot of our products are preservativefree.” It’s a big operation – and the kids don’t get a full pass when it comes to farm work either. “From an early age they’re involved in feeding, watering and moving of livestock. “They gather and pack eggs with remarkably few breakages. They help at birthing time and are especially good at cuddling the newborn piglets and those cute-as lambs.”

They are also one of the earliest members of the Slow Food Noosa movement, with a Snail of Approval award received in 2016. The program aims to inspire producers, chefs, restaurant owners and food outlets to use and promote good, clean and fair ingredients from our local area. “We were in the first year, when they started, and we’ve stayed in since,” Mason said. “People are asking where their food comes from, these days.” Business is all one-way: up. “We’re still growing - there’s plenty of potential to grow and we are. “Our small goods are very popular, you will find them at many of our stocklist and in the near future IGA stores.
“Delivering directly to families from our farm has been our focus, Club Piggy allows us to connect directly to those who value quality food and want to know where it comes from. Club Piggy Meatboxes are ordered directly from our webpage. “Our Club Piggy Mixed boxes contain either a combination of pork, chicken and eggs – in small, medium or large sizes, or pork only – in medium or large sizes. “All you have to do is decide which box best suits the tastes of your household.” You’ll be able to get lamb packs seasonally, too. “When we receive the order, you’re given a link to a private Club Piggy Facebook Group, where you’ll get information about the farm, delivery changes, recipes etc.

The older kids have skills their peers might envy, like driving tractors and quad bikes, and helping in the butcher house (especially making sausages) and instructing their dads on how to serve customers at the markets. “They have a real appreciation for life and death on the farm, and a respect for the contribution our animals make to feeding themselves, and others also.” The move south has been a big change for Mason. It’s a big change from big broad acres and cattle. “We first started here doing farmers’ markets - Noosa and Kawana – then branched out to Brisbane, Gympie, and have grown from that.” Now they do weekly delivery runs to Noosa and the Sunshine Coast with drops

Time to light up “DAD, I’m going to put the Christmas lights up”. “But Dom, it’s only October.” This is now an annual conversation at 3 Dianella Court, Cooroy. Dominic Noonan, aged 13, has been decorating the family home for three years. “I do it all myself except the roof. My parents aren’t really into it, but I made friends with my neighbour Wendy up the road. Her display is really good. “Me and Wendy talk about the new
lights she likes. She tells me about the websites and shops where she gets hers.” Wendy (of Cooroy’s Kindness Club) agrees. “Dom does an amazing job. We definitely bonded over our love of Christmas lights. He’s a very special young man. He shines brighter than all our lights combined!” In Dianella Court there are usually five houses that decorate for Christmas. “My house is the first you see, but I want to make it good so people keep driving up the street to look at the other lights.” Dom’s biggest thrill was seeing his lights on the Channel 7 news last December. He’s hoping for the same this year. “I want Cooroy to become a Christmas light capital,” he said. Keep it up Dom, you’re doing a great job!
NOOSA BIOSPHERE GALA SHINES L I G H T O N K O A L A C O N S E R VAT I O N Koala expert panel at Noosa Biosphere Wild Koala Gala
THE Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation held its Wild Koala Gala on Tuesday November 2, celebrating community action for koala conservation in the region. Foundation Chair, Rex Halverson said the Noosa Biosphere Wild Koala Gala focused on the challenges and opportunities for sustaining our local koala populations. “There is no more iconic species than the koala. And Noosa is one of the few places left where you can live and work amongst them, which contributes to the very special nature of living in the Noosa Biosphere Reserve,” said Mr Halverson. “It was our intention that the Gala ignited an urgent call to action to support our local koala populations and highlighted the incredible work that is currently underway across our Shire.” A panel of koala experts discussed the plight of the koala and what is being done in the region to protect the vulnerable species. “Our panel of experts are leading the charge for koala conservation. Groups like Noosa & District Landcare, Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, Queensland Koala Crusaders, Detection Dogs for Conservation and researchers at the University of the Sunshine Coast, are all playing a major role in protecting koalas and their habitat. A personal video message to Noosa was also received from world renowned conservationist Dr Jane Goodall, ambassador
to the 50th Anniversary of UNESCO’s Man and Biosphere Programme who reinforced the urgent need to conserve biodiversity and for communities to live sustainably. The Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation launched its Noosa Wild Koala Initiative and Fund to develop a coordinated approach to koala conservation. The Gala helped kickstart the initiative with $27,000 in donations raised through a silent and live auction. Event partner, Queensland Koala Crusaders matched this with an additional $25,000 added to the Noosa Wild Koala Fund. Winners of the inaugural Noosa Biosphere Awards were also announced at the event. Noosa and District Landcare won the Land category for their Keeping it in Kin Kin project. Noosa Integrated Catchment Association took out the Water award. Rachel Lyons was awarded the Wildlife category, and Noosa Environmental Education Hub won the People and Economy award. “We are thrilled with the results of our second Noosa Biosphere Gala and thank our sponsors, supporters, and everyone who attended. Congratulations also to the finalists and winners of the Noosa Biosphere Awards – we’re so pleased to now have a platform whereby we can recognise the efforts of those who work so hard to maintain the Noosa Biosphere’s special nature,” said Mr Halverson.

In the time I have been with Wildcare I have met many life-long friends who share the same dark warped sense of humour you only get through sharing not-so-pleasant experiences and late nights searching for animals in the bush”. Rachel led the team that managed Noosa’s wildlife response during the 2019 fires and later developed the Emergency Response Trailer to prepare for similar events. “The greatest challenges I see into the future for wildlife is climate change and the risk it poses for forests and water resources. We are already seeing the effects of it, probably best exemplified by the 2019 drought and subsequent fires.” The Greater Glider which Rachel identifies as her most loved animal is now listed as endangered nationally given how much they suffered during and after that horrific 2019 summer. “I saw my first wild Greater Glider the night I moved on to my property in Pomona over 20 years ago. I was so excited to have them living around me and to be guardian of the big habitat trees where they sleep. Apart from the fact that they are exquisite, I am drawn to animals that are obscure and unique. Most people would have no idea they have them on their property as they are quiet and reside high in the tree canopy. They are one of the hardest animals to rehabilitate, which I take as a challenge.” As elusive as her beloved gliders, you might not see her, but Rachel Lyons’ work is all around us. How fortunate for us, and our unique wildlife. “I am the eternal optimist. I have the bigger picture always in mind and am hopeful that the amazing gains made in the conservation and environmental sector over the last twenty five years continue.” If not now, then when?

CATCHING up with Rachel Lyons is a bit like spotting a koala. You’ve got to be patient and lucky. The last place you would expect to find her is chained to a keyboard in a Brisbane hotel, diligently preparing for an AGM whilst simultaneously wrapping up a course on drone use. “I like to fly below the radar and work behind the scenes as much as I can, only popping my head up when I need to. Less distraction that way. I despise talk for talks sake and just like to get on with things – not enough time in the day otherwise,” she says. Rachel is quickly adapting to new technology, including thermal drones, which are used for wildlife search and rescue, and flora and fauna surveying, dividing herself between her day job as Noosa Landcare’s Business and Partnerships Manager and her volunteer role with Wildcare Australia. This lady wears many hats. “The saying ‘If not you, then who? If not now, then when?’ has always resonated with me. I see volunteering as a duty, as a responsibility to give back to the world we live in. And I get bored very easily. My mind never stops so I keep busy doing things I think are important”. That important work in land management and the natural resources industry forms a long list of achievements. She is a behind-the-scenes change maker, known for her ability to create profitable partnerships. Most recently, she was recognised by the Noosa Biosphere Awards, winning the Wildlife Category. The awards acknowledged her commitment as an active volunteer in wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, and her direct impact on co-leading the Noosa Region Koala Rescue Team (84 rescues since July, excluding health checks). “I have been in Wildcare for around 22 years now, as they are one of the most

IT’S a long way from where the now 52-year-old started life in rural Victoria, and whose first major teaching employment was in a refugee camp in Swaziland. “I was born in East Gippsland where my parents had a dairy farm,” Phil said. “When milk ‘went bad’ in the seventies, we bought a general store in Briagolong, selling everything [and] being newsagent, the bank, post office – then I went to Melbourne University to study environmental science and a Bachelor of Education. “That was going to be the big thing in the late eighties and early nineties: everyone was talking greenhouse effect, CFCs, and people started putting a monetary value on [the environment] and telling us every multinational would have two or three environmental scientists employed. “But within 18 months it was gone; it was nothing.” Ironically, 30 years on, “we are getting to where we were then,” he added. But it was a double whammy for Phil, as then premier Jeff Kennett was closing government schools across the state, and graduate teacher interviews were running up to two years behind schedule. “By chance, Australian Volunteers Abroad came to the university one day, so I went and listened. “AVA said we could work overseas with no experience on a one-year contract, where previously it had been two years. So, we were the pilot program team to go over.” Phil was sent to Swaziland, a small country surrounded by South Africa (controversially re-named Eswatini since 2018) to teach geography at a refugee camp, most occupants of whom were victims of a 20-year civil war in neighbouring Mozambique. “It was hard. It was all the British education system,” Phil said. “There was no TV or video in the schools, or any other appliances like photocopiers.” Not much else, either. “There was no oven in the house or washing machine, or fridge. I hand-washed my own clothes for the first year, but was told to employ someone to do it, because if you’re earning money there, you should employ people. “By my final year we didn’t have running water. UNHCR came to install taps. They left at the beginning of 1994 saying ‘we’ll give you a year to figure how to pay to run the pump’. By January 1995 nothing had happened, so they cut the power off. “[From there] water delivery would come in once a week. It was dam water – you couldn’t drink it, but we’d fill up tanks at school, we’d fill up buckets for showers.

Meanwhile, Phil heads for a twenty-first anniversary milestone, while Rosie teaches two days a week at the school, also developing an enviable reputation in the art world. “She was recently featured on Gardening Australia, which you can see online.” He has predominantly taught upper primary, but is heading back to Year 6 next year – and he is bemused about now teaching some children of his first students. “It’s the first time I’ve had the next generation in, after teaching their mum or dad. “It does make it interesting. Also, now I’m playing cricket with one of my ex-students; he has become a teacher and is now teaching my daughter. That’s what being part of a community is about.” When living in Cooroy, he said “I’d never leave”. “But raising a young golfer and my daughters’ surf-based activities, getting closer to Noosa reduced travel times.” “One thing I miss is the trip to Cooroy IGA – it always took so long to get in and out, with impromptu parent/teacher/student meetings taking place in the aisles. “Now I live in Noosaville, no-one knows you.” Phil said when he first arrived, the town and school population was growing.
“But the school demographic is changing with the increasing cost of housing, and no rentals available,” he said. “A lot of schools around here are experiencing the same thing with younger families being pushed out.” One new thing for Phil is his recent purchase of the Buttercups wholesale business off Maple Street, for which he now takes Thursdays off school to run. “For my midlife crisis I bought a cake shop rather than a car,” he quipped. He was friends with the previous owners Andy and Katie Thin, and they got talking. Phil said he has since increased the wholesale side of the business – and he will be expanding the retail side to coincide with the opening of the new Cooroy Playground. “I just think the new playground will be a big attraction,” he said. “At the moment, we supply local businesses with muffins, chocolate brownies, carrot cakes and logs, scones, cherry and apple pies, veggie tarts, bacon thingies – a whole range. “I have to think about a future transition away from teaching because after 30 years a change is as good as a holiday. “It seems like a good opportunity.”

The Noosa River has maintained its A- quality score in this year’s Healthy Land and Water Report Card. Noosa’s freshwater creeks were in excellent health, with a slight improvement in aquatic insect health at Ringtail Creek. Thumbs Up! Noosa Council is disappointed in the decision in the Planning and Environment Court where it was unable to stop quarry truck movements during school bus hours on the Pomona Kin Kin Road. Council will now progress its application to the Planning and Environment Court seeking full enforcement orders centred on alleged breaches by the Quarry operator and seek to address the intensification of use issues. Noosa Council has announced a revised construction schedule for the Hinterland Playground which will see the unique nature-based, all-abilities playground open to the public in March 2022.

WILD ABOUT NOOSA HINTERLAND WITH Christmas looming, I couldn’t go past an opportunity to feature our glorious King Parrot in all its festive Yuletide colouring. These charming birds are currently raiding our garden for the cherry tomatoes that spring up everywhere. In fact, they’re not interested in the tomato flesh: rather, they happily tear away at each tomato for the tiny seeds inside the fruit. As so often occurs in the world of birds, it is the male King Parrot that is the more highly decorated, although females are not without their own greenheaded splendour. Unfortunately, their call is not as pretty as their appearance, being a screech not unlike a squeaky door hinge. Sadly, King Parrots across eastern Australia are currently suffering from a wasting disease that prevents them from absorbing nutrients. The affected birds become so weak that they cannot fly. Experts studying the problem believe that artificial feeding of these birds, particularly the use of feeding trays or dishes, may be exacerbating the spread of the disease. While we humans are having to change our behaviour to deal with COVID-19, we may also have to alter our habits to help King Parrots survive their own pandemic. King Parrots need deep hollows in old tree trunks for nesting. The entrance can be many metres above the nest, with the parents - and eventually the chicks - having to scramble up to 10 metres between nest and opening. Another way to support our wildlife is to leave old, dead tree trunks standing in both paddocks and gardens. Have a wonderful holiday season everyone.

SMALL BUILDING WITH A BIG H E A R T W I N S N AT I O N A L A W A R D LOCAL Eumundi building designer, Brett Grimley of Ecolibrium Designs is celebrating after collecting an award at the Building Designers Association of Australia National Design Awards. Ecolibrium Designs took out the category for Residential alterations/additions up to $300,000 for The Ark. The award for the writer’s studio is recognition of the eco sustainable design team’s hard work and creative ability. Future accessibility was also in mind as the client is physically impaired and sought a private, environmentally sustainable writers’ studio. The design team and the client all watched the awards event in The Ark itself and were able to celebrate the win together. The client commented “I love the building we call The Ark and am very excited by the win. All the credit goes to Brett and Claudia, the design team from Ecolibrium Designs and Kristiaan the builder from
Brett Grimley and Claudia Silva inside the national award winning writer’s studio
Ecohaus. They were excellent to work with and the results are outstanding.” Ecolibrium’s Brett Grimley said, “We really wanted to create an inspiring space with a sense of warmth and calm conducive to contemplation and creative pursuit. The client has specific needs and we wanted to ensure that the studio could accommodate him well into the future. Your Local #6: KANDANGA HOTEL, Kandanga Have you tried the Kandanga KickStarter yet? Try it sometime – but bring an appetite. It’s the signature dish on the dinner and Sunday lunch menu at Kandanga Hotel, along with many other goodies like homemade chicken parmigiana, tapas and platters. “And we do an awful lot of steaks, either a 300-gram or 500g T-bone,” owner Kerry Willcocks said. Kerry and her husband Russell have operated the hotel since December 2020 – and their sons Hayden, Ben, Sam and daughter Georgia make up the staff – so it’s a true family business. It’s Kerry and Russell’s first-ever venture into the hotel game: they were in the healthcare industry on the Sunshine Coast before coming to Kandanga. At the beginning, Georgia was “the only one who had ever pulled a beer”, but Russell said after a steep learning curve, “nobody’s complaining.” They’ve hugely expanded the range of beverages, too, including on-tap ginger beer from the Eumundi Brewery.
The Kandanga Hotel 19 15 “We have listened to our customers, and increased our drink range,” Kerry said. The day trippers are mostly from Noosa and Gympie, she said. “We have also increased our occupancy in our motel room accommodation. “Since we’ve been here there’s a lot of new people coming in; every week there are new people.” The original hotel, first built in 1915,
burned down in 2015 and was rebuilt in 2017. “All that’s left is the three wooden tables and chairs out the side,” Russell said. They are also getting a new pool table in, along with a new kids playground, and planning for growth, given the explosion in local population numbers. As for the Kandanga Kick-Starter, Kerry lists the contents.
“Fish tacos, pulled pork sliders, barbecued chicken wings, salt and lemon calamari, sweet potato chips and (standard) chips. That feeds three-to four people.” Kandanga Hotel is on Main Street, 5484 3162, or Facebook/kandangahotel

Dani’s current passion is the energy and inspiration she draws from working with mixed media such as transfers, stencils, feathers, flowers, sand, shells and then the paint mediums of acrylics, inks, watercolours, pens, crayons, and pastels. Dani’s style is intuitive, and her personal story reflects her vision which comes straight from the heart. “I’m not actually a trained artist,” says Dani. “All my work is self-taught. My official qualification is Bachelor of Environmental Science with a minor in Marine Ecosystems.” “I always wanted to work in conservation. When an opportunity to volunteer at Underwater World (now SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast Aquarium) came up, I took it. I now work there on a casual basis as an Education Officer / Tour Guide. My art is my passion for the marine environment.” Her artwork emanates her passion and is

10 years of Possum Trails IN 2009 when the Cooroy State Primary School held its centenary – the organising committee, of which Tracy Vecchio was a member, purchased a number of possums to sell as merchandise at the Centenary Festival. To encourage people to purchase the possums she created five dressed up possums to have on display – Harry Potter, Bridegroom, Bride and two Princess possums. Danielle Taylor, a member of Cooroy Chamber at the time, loved the idea of the dressed up possums so much that in 2011 the idea of a Christmas in Cooroy Possum trail was born. The Cooroy Chamber purchased a number of possums and Tracy set about creating outfits for them all. There are some great ideas - Gardener, Swagman, Magpie, Snowman and Angel Possums. Over the years Tracy has had to redecorate a number of possums with suggestions from local shop owners and most noticeably Tom Wegener’s personalised mini Surfer possum and
surfboard. The most sought after, Harry Potter Possum, is kept with SPV Accounting under the Harry Potter Christmas tree complete with sorting hat tree topper. Over the years Tracy has been approached to make personalised possums, people love them so much. Tracy says “I love seeing them out and about each year and watching the kids do the trail.” This year Your Local Lifestyle is proudly supporting the Possum Trail with it kicking off in 29 Chamber businesses around the town of Cooroy. YOUR SEASONAL PRODUCE WATCH with Matt Golinski L I L LY P I L L I E S SYZIGIUM Leuhmannii is a native coastal rainforest tree which prolifically produces bright pink, teardrop shaped fruit commonly known as riberries. The trees are widely planted through the region mostly as an ornamental or windbreak plant, and the fruit is often left to fall to the ground and be wasted. In their raw form, the berries are quite astringent, but balanced with sugar and acidity, they have a lovely texture and a unique flavour with hints of cinnamon and clove. Because their fruiting coincides with the Christmas season, it makes sense to me to turn them into a condiment that’s a truly
Australian version of cranberry sauce to have with turkey, roast chicken or ham. This sauce very simple and quick, and would make a great Christmas present to give to friends and family if you have a big harvest. Lillypillies freeze well so if you don’t feel like making anything while they’re in season, you can save them up until you have time to do something with them. You don’t generally see them for sale anywhere, but chances are if you don’t have your own tree you’ll know someone who doesn’t mind sharing their crop with you. Merry Christmas!
CHRISTMAS LILLYPILLY SAUCE
Ingredients: 200gm lillypillies 200gm jellied cranberry 2tbs castor sugar ¼ cup water 1tbs apple cider vinegar 6 fresh lemon myrtle leaves
Method: Remove all stems from the lillypillies and wash well. Place in a small saucepan with all other ingredients, bring to the boil and simmer gently for 15 minutes until the lillypillies have softened. Spoon into a sterilised jar and store in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. Serve with meats, cheeses or use as a dessert ingredient. Serves 8

BASKING IN EUMUNDI SERENITY BY THE time you read this, Eumundi’s new, prestige Bask Restaurant will be full swing into its Christmas season. The restaurant, which only started 12 weeks ago, is beautifully located in Eumundi’s ornate Old Bakery building, and run by highly experienced partners Jess Coolican and Jack Madden. The pair have made names for themselves since they first met at Hastings Street’s Bistro C 14 years ago. They have since worked at Noosa’s Sails along with a range of Melbourne eateries and in Europe – even Edinburgh Castle, in Jack’s case. Jack is the kitchen wonder while Jess, qualified herself in interior design with projects having featured in the likes of Vogue and Belle magazines, is your host. Originally from the Coast, they now live in Eumundi - their two children attending local schools. “We came across this space at the end of July and spent a couple of months working on it,” Jess said in November. “Then we opened the doors to do long lunches – and we have been quite overwhelmed [by the positive response] really.” It was a tentative move to gauge the market.

“It worked well, we found our routine quietly in the background, then evolved over the past few weeks. “We actually moved into the hinterland first, drawn by the lifestyle. We were looking for a while, and just loved this town. “It is really reminiscent of our childhoods up here, with a really beautiful community and a good vibe.” The Saturday-only long lunches are now being supplemented by Friday wine nights and Thursday seafood menu nights. “Jack’s seafood is his specialty,” Jess said. “We will change the menu weekly and it will feature home-made fish and chips, seafood platters and more.” Importantly, Jess said they wanted to get the menu balanced to appeal to a wide audience, yet bring some of the best foods found on the coastal strip to be available at the right prices in the hinterland, particularly on ‘locals-night’ - Thursday. “One of the best items on the menu is our octopus,” Jess said. And vegetarians will not miss out. “We have a lot of plant-based eaters, so we have delicious options on the menu.

IN THESE COVID-19 influenced times, there has been an even greater community move towards buying local product, and the fewer kilometres the product has travelled to be sold, the better. Cooroy’s Bus Stop Espresso is taking that sentiment literally, with a range of locally made food and beverages on hand. The café, which is located in a 1948 single-decker bus relocated from Victoria, started out just offering coffee and tea, with free range eggs and honey made on the owners’ Mary River Road premises. “We’ve come from being a little coffee bus, to now supplying local fruit and vegetables, as well as our own honey and eggs,” co-owner Rob Noy said. “We now also supply Ritchie’s and Pomona Bakeries’ salad rolls, Cooroy Pies which is now Noosa Pies made in Coolum, and cold drinks from Wimmers’ factory. “We have liquid chai from a business in Cudgerie Estate. “We also supply sourdough bread, crumpets and pizza bases, all made at Jeremiah’s Crust in Carters Ridge – and even our coffee is roasted only 300 metres away at Cooroy Coffee. “You can’t get fresher than that.” Rob said the café gets avocados, lemons and limes seasonally from just up the road, and mushrooms from just around the corner. “And we use Cooloola Milk.”
The business only started last March, Rob said. “It’s a great thing as it’s what people want. Locals come for local fresh product. “Since Covid we’re all looking for more local produce from farms; everybody wants that.” He said his business can’t keep growing, but similar businesses could take it up, too. “You can only grow to a certain size so it would be nice to see more of these communitybased farming stalls around the region.”
This is something Noosa councillor Tom Wegener has been advocating for in the hinterland. “Noosa residents seek out locally grown food, knowing it’s organic, healthy and their purchase supports the local community,” Cr Wegener said. “As the new president of Permaculture Noosa, I hope to strengthen community ties through the growing and sharing of food.” Bus Stop Espresso 201 Mary River Rd, Cooroy.

THE COOLEST KOALA IN NOOSA FIZZI’S connection for many years to the Noosa tourism industry gave her a desire to honour the delights of Noosa with a story about an icon or mascot that locals or tourists could take away as a memento of this glorious destination. Fizzi and Lili have been best friends since they were 10. Fizzi as a lawyer always dealt in words. Lili has a magic watercolour talent. They wanted to collaborate on a story. So they developed a series of books dedicated to the koala’s in our local area. “Koala spotting in the Noosa National Park has always brought joy to locals and tourists, young and old. Our local koalas are cherished, but sadly under threat for their very existence,” Fizzi said. “While telling an entertaining story we also wanted to ensure that the book sales directly contributed to the conservation and preservation of the local Koalas to whom our book is dedicated. Horrific recent bushfires sweeping through Koala habitats have highlighted this threat to us all.” Selling around 4,500 books so far, this duo have raised over $3,800 for local koala conservation, preservation and the invaluable Nipper program. A Golden Age at the Majestic in 2022 DECEMBER will be a slightly quieter month for the multi-entertainment powerhouse that Pomona’s Majestic Theatre, home of the silent movie and many other activities, has become. That’s only because Christmas and New Year’s Day fall on a Saturday this year so the traditional Saturday silent movies won’t be on show these two days. The Majestic does however have a Christmas special movie offering on Friday December 17 – the two Oscar-winning Holiday Inn (1942), featuring Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire and Marjorie Reynolds (pictured), and featuring the musical score from Irving Berlin.
The plot, as movie reviewer IMBd describes it, is set “at an inn which is only open on holidays, [where] a crooner (Crosby) and a hoofer (Astaire) vie for the affections of a beautiful up-and-coming performer (Reynolds).” It begins at 7.30pm. “The movie is free for kids and $15 for adults,” Alison said. The film is a scene-setter for a new addition to the Majestic line-up for 2022, she said. Tewantin’s ‘Mr Movies’ Aubrey Cannon will be your host for December’s Holiday Inn, along with his hosting a ‘Golden Age of Hollywood’ feature on the evening
of every second Friday of the month throughout the year. Aubrey, who is known for his encyclopedic knowledge of that movie era, will give a short talk prior to each movie, giving the audience an insight into some of the intriguing background into ‘who-didwhat’ regarding the making of each movie, with some surprises in store. Kicking off the 2022 season, on February 11, the Majestic will feature Witness for the Prosecution (1957), starring Tyrone Power, Marlene Dietrich, Charles Laughton and Elsa Lanchester. On March 11, you can see In a Lonely Place (1950) starring the inimitable Humphrey Bogart, while on April 8, Rex Harrison and Gene Tierney star in The Ghost and Mrs Muir (1947). Other Aubrey-chosen classics to follow are: Age of Consent (1969), Mildred Pierce (1945), Double Indemnity (1944), Picnic (1955), The Family Way (1966), I Confess (1953), Butterfield 8 (1960), and finally We’re No Angels (1955). ‘Adorned with Magnolia, Brenda meets the Lyrebird.’ This new exhibition by local artist Julie St Aubyn is a visual diary of her views from hotel quarantine and beyond. “When I found myself spending two weeks in hotel quarantine, I was luckily equipped with drawing equipment and a view of a wetland and the abundant bird life that lived there. Each day I listened to the radio and recorded my thoughts and observations in drawings. “I explored my feelings of isolation and separation. In the past year I have used these sketches as the basis for a series of paintings that form the framework of my exhibition,” Julie says.
For the month of December our lovely Banana Shed gallery will be transformed into a delightful ‘Artisan Store’. This showcase exhibition will be celebrating over 30 works from our creative and talented local members. There’ll be a variety of unique handmade pieces, including ceramics, jewellery, hand painted silk, eco-dyed works, sculpture, paintings, prints and more. K I N K I N A R T FA I R REVIVES THE VIBE
THE tiny village of Kin Kin with one shop, a cafe and a hotel (currently closed for renovation) recently proved that it can still punch above its weight especially when it comes to ART. An astonishing 620 visitors and locals descended on the town’s School of the Arts hall on Sunday November 7 to enjoy the inaugural Kin Kin Art Fair. So successful was the day - with 17 artists’ work on display, lots of sales and ‘a great vibe’ - that the Art Fair is going to be on again next month. The Kin Kin Community Group, which staged the FREE art fair to give
artists a chance to exhibit and sell their work without having to pay a fee or commission, is putting on the Kin Kin Christmas Art Fair at the School of the Arts on Sunday December 5 starting at 8am. “I’ll be there with bells on,” promised Cooroy ceramicist Tania Edwards who along with painters, jewellers and mosaic artists from Kin Kin, Cooran, Pomona, Mothar Mountain and Wolvi attended the first Fair and was thrilled with the public attendance and positive sales. So too was Gympie great Peter Hughes, who painted four new canvases during the day and sold some of his larger works. Peter will again be showing off his extraordinary skills with brush, palette knife - and even fingers - at the Christmas Art Fair where he will be joined by several new artists as well as those who previously participated. As well as attending the Art Fair, visitors to Kin Kin can enjoy a morning stroll around the village’s re-energised market on the Showground. Admission to both the market and Art Fair is free so here’s a shout out to everyone: come along and enjoy the artistic vibe of Kin Kin and buy art for Christmas!

NOOSA Arts Theatre is delighted to announce their traditional favourite pantomime show is back with a blast in 2022 after last year’s enforced COVID-19 hiatus. This will be director Susan Dearnley’s ninth pantomime. The show is Hans Christian Andersen’s classic fairy-tale, The Emperor’s New Clothes with a brilliant panto twist. When the egotistical and clothes-obsessed, Emperor Fancypants engages con-artists Nip and Tuck, to make him the most fabulous outfit, they fool him into purchasing a suit of clothes so finely made, that only the most intelligent of people can actually see it. Unfortunately the costs keep escalating, until the kingdom is virtually bankrupt. After much comedy business, the Emperor’s eyes are finally opened by an innocent child, and Nip and Tuck’s trickery is finally exposed.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions the cast numbers are slightly lower but out of the wonderful cast of 21, 11 are returnees to the pantomime stage which just confirms how much actors both young and old love this genre. As we know it’s a huge amount of fun for not only the kids who can get involved but the adults can revert into their childhood days and enjoy the ride too. The show is on for three weekends opening on Saturday January 8 and closing Sunday January 23. There are two shows both on the Saturday, 11am and 2pm and on Sunday, 1pm and 4pm. W E L L- G R O O M E D A R T W I L L TO U C H YO U R I N N E R A N I M A L ART generates the animal in Fiona Groom, this months YLL cover girl! The well-known hinterland artist excels in bringing nature’s creatures to life on canvas, often in quite quirky style – and her latest exhibition will be on show outside the Butter Factory Arts Centre, Cooroy, on December 10, from 4-7pm, as part of the Christmas in Cooroy celebrations. “As an artist I like to create emotion, response and narrative in my work,” Fiona said. “The natural world, but mainly animal life is what inspires and enlightens me on the directions I need to take, and as a new composition slowly comes to life, the painting establishes itself with its own story, its own response to evoke and a sentiment that lingers on.” Fiona’s work is enjoyed far and wide, including being on display in Florence, Italy, Scotland, and the US. She also donated various works for the Explorers Against Extinction presentation in London. She was also featured in a TV episode of Put Some Colour in Your Life. Here at home, Fiona has exhibited in numerous state and national arts festivals, and locally she has participated as a volunteer in the local artistic
community as well as working in several galleries across the Coast. Fiona’s local volunteering has involved her in an assortment of local community events, including Noosa Open Studios, group exhibitions, exhibition installation and facilitate art projects, children’s art workshops, painting workshops, plus art group tutoring and community-based artisan markets. She has also had the chance to make her animal art large-scale with the creation of a variety of murals that can be found across the Coast and surrounds. Fiona’s creative journey started early, taking
her through a series of art diplomas, culminating in an arts double degree majoring in fine arts and visual culture. Christmas in Cooroy is expected to attract thousands of locals and visitors, and Fiona’s art will share a platform with a variety of fellow artisans and potters in a market-style setting. The Butter Factory Arts Centre is on Maple Street in the town centre.

If living with COVID-19 has taught us anything, it is that we must cherish the time we have with our friends and family. There is nothing more important after all. So, as 2021 draws to a close, the economy is recovering, families are being reunited and life is slowly returning to ‘normal’. It’s with great optimism that we look
towards 2022 and as your Federal MP, I pledge to continue my focus on delivering for our local community. While there’s always much to celebrate at Christmas time, let’s not forget that many people are also doing it tough. If each of us can reach out to someone who may be alone – an old friend, a neighbour, a distant relative – it would make the world of difference. Merry Christmas and happy New Year.
Christmas is a time of peace and goodwill, and this year, those values take on even more importance as we face the prospect of COVID-19 restrictions continuing to affect our community. Vaccination is the most important protection measure we have against the health, social and economic implications of further COVID-19 outbreaks. But we also must respect every person’s choice. Looking back, it was two years ago when the devastating bushfires hit Noosa and the recovery effort is still ongoing. The Australian Government is continuing to support the environmental recovery by committing $165,768 to Noosa & District Landcare Group for a range of projects throughout Noosa to assist with the revegetation of natural habitats and eradication of weeds to protect and conserve local flora and fauna.
Federal Member for Wide Bay Businesses in Noosa were only starting to rebound from the fires when COVID-19 hit and the best way we can support local businesses now is by shopping locally this festive season. Whether it’s loading up your Christmas table with locally-grown produce and fresh seafood caught just off the Coast, a lastminute present from the boutique down the street, or picking up a gift voucher for dinner at a nearby restaurant, buying locally is a great way of giving back to your community. When you support local small businesses and Aussie producers, it makes a big difference to our local economy, and it is the number one way you can back local jobs. C L A R E ST E WA R T It’s all a go as our ‘Go Noosa Transport initiatives return for the upcoming Christmas holiday period. Enjoy the ease of getting around Noosa on the Free Holiday Buses which run from December 11 to January 23. The holiday buses are such a hit that only last week Council passed a resolution to trial free buses every weekend for 18 months beginning January 24, 2022, making travel free for 150 days a year (including holiday buses) for our community. Noosa Council is the first in Qld to trial free weekend buses and it’s a huge win for our community. We are looking to finalise plans with Translink shortly so everything is ready to go on January 24 with the 18-month trial of free weekend buses. Thanks to all those who responded to our liveability survey. We received more than 1000 responses which will drive our decision making going forward and help shape our future budget deliberations. Your voices will be heard. Coming into Christmas it is my privilege to once again launch the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal. We initiated this last year to help the most vulnerable in our

community and it was met with great success. We are asking for your help once again this year. You can help make Christmas a little brighter for those doing it tough this year by donating gift cards, vouchers and presents. Charities supported include St Vincent de Paul, Salvation Army, Youturn Youth Support, Santa’s Classy Helpers and Sunnykids. Drop off donations at Tewantin-Noosa RSL Club and Noosa Council’s Tewantin offices by December 18. Let’s bring Christmas cheer to those who need it most. Katie Rose Cottage - no ordinary hospice NOOSA’S only hospice has been built on generosity and kindness from within our community. It stems from not only an initial generous donation to buy the house but also the many local volunteers who give their time and energy to keep every aspect of the hospice functioning. This hospice works hard for its existence and although there is a small amount of Government funding, the relies heavily on donations, Op Shop revenue and fundraising events. The accredited, professional end-of-life nursing care the hospice provides is free for those in our community facing a terminal illness. The one thing all visitors and guests remark upon when entering the hospice is its bright and beautiful ambience. The guest rooms are spacious with garden views and the lounge is light and airy. The many outdoor seating areas provide shade and peace. The gardens are magnificent and provide guests with space to indulge in quiet reflection or enjoy the company of friends and family. We have a large team of volunteers who give their time and share their skills and expertise in myriad ways. Our gardening team, for example, have a shade house, a potting shed and a nursery where they propagate, grow and pot plants for use not only in the hospice garden but also for sale in our Op Shops and warehouse. Many of the gardeners are also pretty handy with
woodwork, building and landscape design, which has resulted in stunning features - a Japanese teahouse and garden being two of the many. Inside the hospice, the teams there work tirelessly too. The management and nursing staff welcome the support of volunteers who assist with many roles within the hospice and ensure our guests have every comfort they could wish for. Many of the local restaurants deliver free gourmet meals for guests and their families and local businesses maintain our pool, lawnmowers and so much more. Volunteers are the life blood of the hospice and we are always in need of willing volunteers to help out. If you have time to spare and would like

Singing is good for you THE best thing about singing is the joy it brings. I have been singing with this choir for over five years and it has made an amazing difference to my life. This might be due to the feeling of euphoria that singing in a choir delivers, together with a sense of connection, accomplishment and social wellbeing. Singing is also said to increase dopamine and oxytocin levels, improves lung function delivering more blood to the brain, and regulating heart function as well as boosting our immune systems. We meet at the CWA hall in Eumundi on Tuesdays 4 to 5.30pm under the skillful direction of Jo Deguara (0403 841 856) who has been running community choirs for over 12 years. S A N D Y B O LT O N RECENT announcements for December 17 have as I said in my speech in Parliament, brought much joy in our communities, as well great angst. Mandates around vaccinations have seen our inboxes overflow in a way my office has never experienced. From our businesses, residents and patients of the chiropractors, psychologists and other allied health care workers who are affected, the ramifications of a decrease of available health providers when we are needing them the most will impact all in our community. As we wait for responses from Government to the many concerns and questions surrounding - including why telehealth cannot be used where possible - I thank everyone for their unity and support for each other, regardless of vaccination status. There has been greater awareness to our ‘invisible injuries’ including PTSD via local events, and we thank all who work and volunteer in this space. During the coming months, it is really important to ensure mental fitness is part of our daily regime, including not sending any symptoms to the ‘do later’ box! There are many organisations to assist, as well some fabulous exercises for our mind at Noosa 360. Remembrance Day 2021 was again one of deep honouring and appreciation for those who gave their lives for us.

HEAD INJURIES AND CONCUSSION CHANCES are you have bumped your head before. Usually the injury is only minor because our skull is so hard and protects our brain. But some head injuries can be more severe, such as skull fracture, concussion or traumatic brain injury. Some of the most common causes of head injury include accidents at home, work, outdoors or while playing sports, falls, physical assault and traffic accidents. Head injuries can present in many different ways, but are categorised broadly into two categories: • Open/penetrating head injury – when a high velocity object breaks through the skull and enters the brain. • Closed – when the head sustains a blunt force by striking against an object that does not break the skull. Some examples of common head injuries:
• Concussion – occurs when there is no structural damage that can be seen on standard imaging tests like CT scan, but there ARE functional changes that occur in how the brain works. • Brain contusion – this is when the brain becomes bruised leading to some bleeding in the brain, resulting in swelling. • Skull fracture – this is when the actual skull cracks. • Haematoma – this is bleeding in the brain that collects and clots to form a bump. Note that a haematoma may not be apparent for a day or even weeks! Signs and symptoms:
Symptoms vary according to the type and severity of the injury. Some of the more common ones are: • Headaches.
• Dizziness. • Fatigue. • Being a little slower than usual to think. • Difficulty performing complex tasks. • Mood changes. • Difficulties with concentration. • Difficulties with memory. When to seek urgent medical care:
• If there is severe head or face bleeding. • If the person is confused, drowsy, or unconscious. • If the person stops breathing. • If you suspect a serious head or neck injury. • If the person behaves abnormally. • If they develop a severe headache or stiff neck. • If they vomit more than once. • If there is any bleeding or watery discharge from the ears or nose. • If the person suffers from any fits.

Foote Sanctuary Buderim I feel so blessed to have found this hidden sanctuary at Buderim. Funnily enough as I arrived I ran into a couple of Cooroy locals. E J Foote Sanctuary is 23 acres on the Eastern slopes of Buderim. The land was given to the Community Association in 1948 by the Foote Family who farmed a variety of crops. The land was dedicated to their son Eric who was sadly killed in World War One. The Park was taken over in 1963 by a Voluntary committee (now known as BWMCA). A lot of work has gone into this park, so thank you to the volunteers. Please pop a gold coin in the donation box at the end. My favourite thing about this park is you can take your dog (on leash). Bella and I spent two hours exploring the different tracks and the abundant flora and fauna. Over 80 varieties of birds have been recorded from King Parrots to fan tails. There is a 600m sealed part of the track that has very informative plaques about all the trees and bird life that lives in them. It is suitable for wheelchairs and prams with plenty of spots to sit and rest or just take it all in. The Cascade Trail has quite steep rocky stairs. Unfortunately the cascade was only a trickle the day we were visiting, so we will
be back. From here you can do a Boundary Walk. We came across a bush Turkey protecting its nest who chased us away. You also might be lucky enough to see a swamp wallaby. So please by mindful of the wild life with your puppies. Also keep in mind the residents who are lucky enough to have this as their back yards. We explored every track, one of which pops you out onto a road that has an amazing view of Mt Coolum. There were also a couple of spots for Bella to cool off. A good level of fitness is required for these two trails.

The sanctuary is located at Park Ln, Buderim. It’s quite shady but as always, remember your sunscreen, hat and plenty of water. Happy Hiking.

PTSD charity at home in the hinterland LOCAL charity PTSD DOGS AUSTRALIA are settling into their new home in the hinterland and their Assistance Dogs in-training are loving country life! Now located on the outskirts of Cooroy, the not-for-profit organisation, established in 2018, rescues dogs from shelters and pounds, trains them to become highly skilled Assistance Dogs, then places them, at no cost, to Veterans and First Responders suffering with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The dogs are trained to meet the specific requirements and complex needs of their handlers. They bring much comfort and joy to many, using their unique skills, such as Deep Pressure Therapy, Retrieval, Notification and much more. Receiving an Assistance Dog

OUR WILVOS 5441 6200 Hotline usually starts slowing down at this time of year. It doesn’t seem to be the case this year. There has been a constant call for orphaned baby birds over past months. Often they are fledglings that are best left with their parents, as we don’t want to ‘kidnap’ them. Sometimes a dangerous situation means these chicks have to be taken into care, but in most cases the chicks are best left alone to sharpen their flying skill.. There are other cases where we can take the young birds into care for a week and once they can fly enough to stay out of trouble, we return them to their very happy parents. The fig bird ‘baby season’ has begun and many of these are taken to wildlife hospitals and wildlife centres. The adults do a wonderful job of rearing their young, along with young that may not even be theirs. It always seems like their whole neighbourhood welcomes them home. There are so many native fruiting trees at the moment and figbirds thrive on these fruits. Wildlife carers always have a variety of native plants growing in their yard – from seeding grasses through to fruiting and flowering shrubs. Fortunately native plants thrive with regular pruning! As the holiday season approaches, it is a good time to remind everyone to dispose of plastic bags responsibly as it is a time when plastic bait packets and such are blown into
the waterways where they can be lethal to platypus in the creeks and to turtles in the ocean. Fishing line needs to be cut into small pieces when disposed of, to prevent entanglement by our wildlife. Don’t forget to buy wildlife friendly Christmas presents – nest boxes for birds and possums, and make up dreys out of hanging baskets for ringtail possums. Hollow logs on the ground give our little reptiles a safe haven. Your local native animals will be very grateful. S U M M E R FAVO U R I T E S I N T H E G A R D E N S THERE is much to see in Noosa Botanic Gardens at this time of year. Flamboyant favourites, the Poincianas, are adding flashes of brilliant red and the Flame Tree is a standout against the green, but there are some lesser known beauties in flower that are worth looking out for. The Cape Chestnut is one. It has delicate mauveto-light pink clusters of flowers that need to be Cape Chestnut admired at close range. Natives of the east coast of southern Africa, the flowers are followed by oil producing seeds. The oil has a variety of uses including the manufacture of soap and skin care products. It has also been used as a lubricant and as fuel in diesel engines. There are many more so come along with your camera. You won’t be disappointed.
WE are facing a changing world. Things are comfortable now, but just. Or maybe not at all if you are a business owner negotiating the minefield of COVID-19 regulations. I have read that lunging from crisis to crisis is the new normal. My business was cut by 80% with the financial crisis and then the 2011-12 rains set me back again. The road is getting bumpier. We are facing not only climate change - harsher storms and droughts, but the SEQ Plan for 1.9 million people to move to South East Queensland by 2035. Add to this the many hundreds of thousands that will come for the 2032 Olympics (this will be a regional Olympics and Noosa is in the mix). However, we have the same amount of rain to fill our catchments and we are all connected through the SEQ water grid. So many issues arise from this like water for farming and food resilience. We should be taking control of what we can. We can work toward food security. A plan is evolving called the Agri-hub. A key part of this plan is to support local farming. How do we do this? A start is to change the paradigm or playing field of local farming to encourage new enterprise. • First - instead of emerging farmers buying land, we can approach landholders and ask if they would like a portion of their land to be farmed. There are many properties underutilised or idle in Noosa. • Second - we invite emerging farmers to join the Agri-Hub program as a path forward. New practices in regenerative farming are proving effective, but there is a long learning curve and complexities in starting. The Noosa Biosphere is the place to add to the emerging paradigm. • Third - we develop a steering committee which will give direction to the farmers and the landholders. This body will advise on a plan forward for the landowner and the farmer. The steering committee will be supported by Country Noosa and Permaculture Noosa, which are already advancing new water conserving farming practices and expanding this space. • Fourth - the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation (NBRF) will facilitate this
process with legal advice, contractual agreements, and the administration of the Agri-hub. The NBRF was designed to facilitate the ‘Big Ideas’ of the Noosa Biosphere Reserve, and the Agri-hub is a really big idea. Also, the NBRF will pursue funding for the project. It has a not-for-profit status and has lines into funding streams. • Fifth - Numerous satellite groups have committed support for the Agri-hub project including Tourism Noosa and Landcare. Tourism Noosa is watching this program for foodie tourism and farm visits. Landcare is supporting carbon sequestration through new farming methods. The Agri-hub is an evolving vision for Noosa’s future. It is about building community interconnections and food supply sustainability. This is good for the short term, but it also fits into bigger plans for feeding the inevitable tsunami of tourists and athletes with the healthiest food in the world. We need to act now to make this happen. The Agri-hub is an important piece in this vision. It takes ten years for a regenerative farm to hit its potential. There is an urgency to accelerate the change. Tom Wegener is a Noosa Councillor, director of the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation and president of Permaculture Noosa.

The team held on to beat Landsborough Loggers by 23 runs in a tight match, played at Cooroy’s Sel Bonnel Oval on November 14. Winning the toss, Cooroy elected to bat first. An excellent opening partnership of 106 between Shayne Payne and skipper Rob Plant built a solid foundation for a big score. Shayne was eventually caught on 84. Andrew Beveridge continued the flow with a solid 30 runs. Cooroy ended their 40 overs on 189/6. Landsborough came out swinging and at drinks after 20 overs they were ahead of the run rate at 102/2. But Cooroy regrouped, and their bowling attack took back control. A superb fast spell from youngster Marcus Morley saw only 13 runs from his six-over spell. Josh Plant, 13, kept up the pressure, with keeper Mitch Kneale holding a key catch as the settled batsmen began to fall. Ben Christensen (3/24 off 8) and Brett Evans (2/23 off 8) ensured the pressure switched to the batting side. The run rate became insurmountable with Landsborough finishing on 166/8. It was a great game of cricket that could have gone either way, played in fantastic spirit. The game was a true Grand Final and much credit goes to the Landsborough lads for their contribution to a great day.

THIS is scenic cross country mountain biking at its best. At the moment the Noosa trail network is mostly a collection of quiet country lanes and fire management trails that meander through national parks, forestry and farmland linking Noosa, Cooroy, Pomona, Cooran and Kin Kin. It’s a multi use trail system so you will likely meet and need to give way to hikers and horse riders along the way. There are eight official trails so it can be a wee bit complicated to navigate and the signage is lacking to say the least. There is word on the street that money has been allocated to rectify this and, (fingers crossed) upgrade some trails - but for now lets untangle it a little. Trail 1 is a fairly flat scenic 14 kilometre countryside loop starting and finishing in Kin Kin. Trail 2 is Kin Kin to Cooran. This is 26 kilometres one way with lots of sustained climbs and exciting descents on country roads and fire trail. It has four magnificent lookouts including Cootharaba Views and Twin Hill Views. Trail 3 is my favourite - Cooran to Kin Kin via Woondum National Park - 22 kilometres one way. Some big hills, the first being one aptly called ‘The Mother’ that will be walked by all but the most skilled on E-mountain bikes. Stop and catch your breath at Tablelands Lookout then onto the ‘Stairway To Heaven’. This is a series of climbs taking you up into the eucalypts
of the Woondum National Park. Now comes the reward for all this climbing, the ‘Pinbarren Downhill’ descends a tree lined spur off the Woondum ridge, down to Upper Pinbarren Creek Rd. Its yeehah factor is high but be careful as it is steep and has lots of roots, ruts and rocks. Enjoy lunch at the Black Ant in Kin Kin then ride Trail 2 back to Cooran, making a nice 50km loop. Trail 4 is Lake Macdonald to Kin Kin and is 26 kilometres one-way. It has long climbs to scenic lookouts and fast long descents - with some gates that need to be opened and closed - so beware. It takes in some of Trail 2. Trail 5 is Pomona to Cooran - 10 kilometres through the Tuchekoi National Park. It has great views of Mt Cooran and Mt Cooroora which both have nice walking trails to their summits. Trail 6 is the Cudgerie Countryside Loop - a nice five kilometre fairly flat circuit sprinkled with single trail. Trail 7 is the Mac’n’Back trail linking Pomona and Lake Macdonald. At the moment it may be impassable due to logging in Yurol Forest. Trail 8 is the Cooroy Wanderer, a fairy flat 11km trail linking Pomona and Cooroy. Trail 6 can be linked via a tunnel / drain under the Bruce Hwy. NOTE: some of these trails have gates in unlikely places that will need to be opened and closed. Some of these trails will feel quite
remote in places so for safety always ride with a group or at least one other, be able to fix a flat tyre and minor mechanicals, have a first aid kit and phone and carry plenty of water and snacks. For full details of these trails the Noosa Council have a free map of the network that can be found at most bike shops. Most of these trails are suitable for nearly all types of off-road bicycles. My preference would be a Cross Country or even better an E-mountain bike to help with some of the big hills. Till next time, stay safe and enjoy the ride. Andy Flanagan. AS the Boxing season comes to a close for Team Impact, two of the club’s professional boxers are having one last hit out.. Keiran Whitehead was super impressive when he made his professional debut last weekend at the Banana Bender Hotel (formerly the Ettamogah Pub) Keiran stopped his opponent Cody Parker from the Gold Coast at the 1:45 mark of the first round. “We have been working on body punching quite a bit lately.” “Keiran is one of the hardest punchers to the body that I have trained. As soon as he landed the shot I knew it was a fight over for Cody,” Mark Evans said. Fellow stablemate and professional boxer Luke Martin will step into the ring on Saturday night in his toughest bout to date. Luke will face former IBO World Title
holder Jason ‘Nugget’ Cooper at the Eatons Hill Hotel in Brisbane. “Luke is as tough as they come and always turns up to fight. “This is a fight that no one else wanted to take. When I offered it to Luke he jumped at the chance. We are really excited about the challenge and are confident about getting the job done,” Evans said. “It has been a great year for the Impact crew. We have managed to stay active in the most uncertain times with the threat of COVID-19 restrictions looming over everyones head. “We’ve made the successful move into our new premises and the boxers have all performed well with each outing they have had.
