Trees and animals are my kind of people

We stand under a shelter in the middle of a paddock that was recently under water. With bush on three sides of us, there sits an incomplete wood sculpture of a contented looking koala. Chainsaw sculptor Shane Christensen is on the tools and I am lucky to witness the extraordinary emergence of a masterpiece carved from a timber log.

wood carving with dremel tools - but it was a Youtube video that exposed him to chainsaw carving.

“It looked really dangerous,” he says laughing at the initial attraction. “You could get large pieces done and the timber that I have access to is large eucalyptus timber so it’s not really made for fine indoor pieces. Bigger is better.

That’s the nature of what I do. Big, large hardwood. It will last so much longer and will be telling the stories long after we are gone.”

Shane’s biggest sculpture is a dreaming spirit from the Kombumerri people of the Gold Coast. It stands two metres tall and is 365 kilos of local hardwood. His favourite piece is at Eumundi State School and depicts an old tree full of hollows for native fauna.

A collaboration with Gubbi Gubbi artist Lyndon Davis, it features a contemporary tree scar and holds a box hive of native bees. The piece is entitled ‘Home to Many’.

If I’m sitting here in the bush and I get a special encounter with a wild animal it really leaves an impact, especially if it interacts with me and you feel like you have a communication going on. “Where I used to live I could hear koalas mating all through the summer at night. You could hear them and smell them but I never actually saw them. I remember catching a wave at Noosa and looking up at those two big white gums and there was a koala up there and he looked like he was watching me (laughs). I just thought, how many places in the world can you have that experience?”

Shane has lived locally for over twenty years and we share a quiet, easy conversation about his humble journey to full time artist, connecting his passion for country and his unique gift for carving wood. “I’m always seeing images in the organic shapes in the forest, the clouds, the fire, the ocean. Anywhere like that, even in the sawdust.”

This current koala commission is destined for a primary school in northern NSW, Kamilaroi Nation, where it will form the centrepiece of a yarning circle, providing a safe space for informal and culturally friendly conversations. The koala is darker than the tree and the emphasis gives it an arresting, life-like quality.

“I’ve darkened the timber with fire. The eucalyptus, fire and koalas have a story. Too much fire is dangerous for koalas and not enough fire is dangerous for forests that koalas live in, so they are all entwined.”

Shane made the leap to full time artist when his daughter was born. Always akin to the bush and wildlife he worked in conservation and land management with Noosa & District Landcare, Noosa Council and NICA, but fatherhood pushed him to follow his heart and his passion.

Inspired as a youngster by acclaimed Bundaberg artist, the late Nobby Clark and an indigenous elder who showed him how to make boomerangs, Shane began

They currently need more Foster Dog Educators to assist with caring for the dogs, until they are ready to be placed with a Handler. Educators are required to attend a weekly training session. PTSD Dogs Australia provide all the equipment needed to care for the dogs.

Mt Cooroora has grown up!

Well, the mountain itself is still the same height but the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge just got harder. Those of you who have previously competed in the mountain challenge will already know just how hard it was. Now, due to changes required by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, the course has undergone some modification and what used to be a 4.2km race with 360+m of vert has grown into a 5.2km race with almost 400+m of vert, and yes, this means that new records are up for grabs. Since November 2020, Sunshine Coast Council has been carefully listening to, and speaking with, Eumundi locals, businesses and community groups to find out their vision and values for the future of their main street.

Sunshine Coast Council Division 10 Councillor David Law said “Until Monday April 11, we are asking the community, ‘Have we got it right?’ in translating your values and vision into the draft streetscape design.

There was also strong support for pedestrian linkages from Memorial Drive to Napier Road to improve access to existing car-parking areas.

On the Cooroy War Memorial in Diamond Street there are two lists of names. One list for WW1 and one for WW2. These are the names of the fallen. These names are honoured every Anzac Day with a roll call… only a surname and an initial or two…Who were they?

CA P TA I N D O M E N I C G E O R G E P I C O N E WHEN the 2nd World War began, Domenic (Dom) Picone was working as a GP in Cooroy. In February 1941, he was part of the Australian Medical Corp in the 2/10 Field Artillery Regiment. The regiment took part in the Battle of Singapore.

When Singapore fell on February 15, nearly 85,000 British, Indian and Commonwealth troops were captured.

Picone was initially imprisoned in Changi Prisoner of War (POW) camp but was transported to Sandakan in Borneo where the POWs constructed an airfield and POW camps. At Sandakan conditions were harsh and the punishments were brutal.

On January 28, 1945 the first forced march of 470 prisoners began from Sandakan to Ranau (260kms). In May, Domenic Picone was in the 2nd group of 560 prisoners forced to march, taking a

month to reach Ranau.

In June, the last 75 men were sent, none were to survive. By the end of July, only 38 prisoners were alive at Ranau. Warrant Officer William Sticpewich asked four men including Domenic to escape, they all said no. On the August 15, 1945 the Japanese Imperial Forces surrendered and the war ended. Now only 15 prisoners remained alive but the allied forces hadn’t yet arrived to liberate them.

They were executed 12 days later on the August 27, 1945. Sticpewich survived his escape and later testified at the Tokyo war crimes trials in 1946.

Captain Domenic George Picone is also commemorated at the Labuan War Cemetery, Cooroy War Memorial, Sandakan Prisoner of War Memorial and Australian War Memorial Roll of Honour.

Rebuilding from the East Coast Floods

THE flooding disaster which struck the east coast of Australia hit hard. Tragically, people lost their lives, properties were damaged, and businesses were disrupted.

While we are now in the recovery phase, people are still hurting.

Despite the extraordinary resilience of locals, many people continue to need support. That’s why my focus over the past month has been to assure impacted locals that help is available.

One such person that I have been in contact with is Gordon McWilliam from Kenilworth Free Range Farm, who was severely impacted by the floods.

Over 300 chickens were lost and nearly $100,000 in direct damage was incurred.

But, to Gordon’s credit, he has remained positive and resilient.

Gordon is one of thousands across Australia’s east coast who have been hit hard by the recent floods and is in the process of applying for grants of up to $75,000 through the Extraordinary Disaster Assistance Recovery Grants.

This is a prime example of the funding support that has been swiftly activated to support impacted individuals, families, businesses, community groups and sporting clubs.

Funding from the federal government includes the Disaster Recovery Payment, a lump sum of $1,000 for eligible adults and $400 for eligible children, as well as the

Disaster Recovery Allowance which provides up to 13 weeks of support at the current JobSeeker rate.

A $558.5 million support package has also been negotiated between the federal and state governments to help Queensland small businesses, not-for-profit organisations, sporting and community clubs and producers like Gordon.

A further $1 million has also been provided by the federal government to numerous Councils to provide immediate relief to fund clean-up and recovery activities – including the Sunshine Coast Council.

To enable impacted residents to easily navigate support payments, I’ve created a consolidated list of all available funding support and information.

The access mat provides wheelchair and mobility scooter access to the beach. It will also assist people who find walking on sand difficult, as well as parents with kids in strollers and prams. The 50-metre mat is in front of the surf club.

Sheryl Hill recently retired as the manager of the Katie Rose Cottage Retail Store, Cooroy. Sheryl worked at the store for 5 years and was dedicated to both the store and the Katie Rose Cottage Hospice Charity. Sheryl is a much-loved member of the Cooroy Community and well respected by the volunteers and regular customers. WILD ABOUT NOOSA HINTERLAND READERS will be familiar with the extraordinary call of the Eastern Whipbird, a sound almost as iconic as the Kookaburra’s laugh.

The classic Whipbird sound is generally two calls produced by a monogamous pair of adult birds.

The male makes the initial long whistle building to a whipcrack, which is immediately followed by the female’s response - the “chewchew” coda. The female’s splitsecond timing makes it all sound like one continuous call.

One Australian scientist has suggested that the whipcrack sound of the male is the most extraordinary note produced by any beast in the animal kingdom.

I’m inclined to agree.

Eastern Whipbirds also have a wide range of other calls, including various rattling, whistling and chortling noises. On our property, the breeding pair maintain an ongoing dialogue throughout the morning.

The female Whipbird lays two or three eggs in a cup-shaped nest hidden in dense vegetation close to the ground. The eggs are a beautiful pale blue colour with dark brown spots. The female sits

on the eggs, but both parents help feed the young.

Researchers have shown that each member of a breeding pair will care exclusively for one chick.

They also found that males provide significantly more food than do females - so presumably male-reared offspring have an advantage over female-reared offspring.

Whipbirds are decidedly territorial. By playing tape recordings of intruders, researchers have been able to better understand the purpose of their songs. It seems that whipbird duets function to ensure that the female defends her exclusive position in the partnership. Having females defend their relationship is quite unusual amongst bird species. But it seems that there may be a bias in the sexratios of whipbirds, with there being more females than males. One study found the ratio of unpaired females to unpaired males was seven to one - in other words, on the whipbird “tinder” there were seven times more available girl birds than boy birds.

This would explain why female whipbirds are so concerned about maintaining their relationship with their chosen male partner.

GOOD food can be pretty hard to find in WA’s Pilbara.

So when Paula and Shaun Morin, working in the mining industry, decided to start making genuine organic sourdough bread, word got around pretty quickly. It was a remote area where “the only choice of food there was Woolies”, Paula said.

“Which didn’t sit well with us, it was very restrictive, so that’s one thing that spurred things on. We were looking for good bread.”

Paula started researching the sourdough bread-making culture while starting a family.

“We wanted to get healthy, get rid of all those preservatives, get rid of artificial stuff.

“Standard bread has 20 different ingredients, but bread should only have water, flour, salt.”

It’s the way bread used to be made 150 years ago long before mass-produced commercial breads caught on. And it’s slow.

“We’ve lost our ability to plan and wait; people want things now – but at what cost?” Paula said.

The business became instantly successful, with word-of-mouth spreading like wildfire, from Karratha to Port Hedland – even to Darwin. But they were always going to head this way, as much of Shaun’s family live here in the south-east.

They found a former organic garlic farm in Carters Ridge, even continuing with garlic to supplement some of their baking products, which include loaves, crumpets, pizza bases – and more recently, pizzas complete with toppings sourced almost entirely from local products.

“Ginger was big here, too – and strawberries, turmeric, and pumpkins,” Shaun said.

“Apart from our flour which comes from NSW and some from Emerald Qld, everything else is local, with the likes of Noosa Reds (tomatoes), Kenilworth cheeses, nitrate-free pork

and pepperoni from our local butcher.”

Now with a family of three – the kids all help and the business is into its second year – they’re already at capacity, supplying mainly small retailers and cafes from Gympie to Noosa to Maleny.

“We have a decent-sized mixer to get liquid into the flour, but everything after that is made by hand, Paula said.

“Our capacity is 240 loaves twice weekly,” she said.

The business has grown, now employing eight or nine more workers, plus some WWOOFers (World Wide Opportunity on Organic Farms Australia) to help on the farm but the economics plus raising a family means the business will not be growing too much, too quickly.

“We need to get a balance: with bread at capacity, doing what we can manage,” Paula said.

Shaun added they both have “arms like pumps”, with all the bread-kneading.

“We have to get regular remedial massages to keep going. It’s a juggle, but we manage to do it within school drop-offs, and spread the work out over the day.”

In a two-part feature, YLL outlines John’s extraordinary military career, which intersected with many now-historic events, in Berlin, in Iraq, in Afghanistan, to the 2009 Black Saturday fires in Victoria – and finally, making a huge personal sacrifice, shunning the military’s ‘Top Job’ in a successful bid to start a significant conversation of change within the armed forces. By Alan Lander Part 1: From Kingaroy to Kuwait MANY of us have had to negotiate emotional, career or family ‘minefields’ at some stage in our lives.

John Cantwell had to negotiate a real one.

In Iraq. More than one, in fact.

He was always going to be a soldier. Born in Ipswich, but growing up in Dalby then Kingaroy growing peanuts “without great success”, life was idyllic.

“It was a wonderful life [as a child].

It introduces you to being a bit more independent as a child when you have to fill up the tractor and drive it,” John said.

His secondary education was spent at a Toowoomba boarding school, but John is the first to admit he was no academic.

“I was smart enough, but I shake my head at my laziness.

“But I joined the school cadets and enjoyed that very much. I was always keen on going into the services.

“I would have joined the RAAF except they didn’t have Spitfires anymore – I’d read all the Commando Spitfire comics - but was always attracted to the Army.”

After Year 12, John signed up for a sixyear stint.

“It sounds like an eternity when you’re that age. But I’d had an epiphany as, within weeks of getting into the vigorous training at Wagga Wagga, I found I actually liked it.

“It was the first time that I excelled at something. It took self-discipline – maybe the cadets and boarding school experiences paid off.”

Anticipating the usual army criticism, John unexpectedly received occasional compliments, which was perhaps why he topped the course.

“I’d never won anything prior to then; it was quite a surprise.”

The career die was cast for John, and over the next six years in the ranks, he

learned much from his attachment to the Intelligence Corp but also across many other areas, as was the training process.

“I got promoted to Corporal, then very junior Sergeant quite early, but I was never going to be fully satisfied as an NCO (noncommissioned officer).

“It wasn’t because I had tickets on myself – it was because at the time I had a commanding officer who was a complete idiot.

“He was a reverse inspiration, a terrible leader and terrible organizer,” John said, adding the services needed “better leaders,” so he went off to sign up for officer training.

“By that time, I had met and married my wife Jane, who was also a soldier at the Wagga base. She had recently left the Army after six years’ service, upon the arrival of our first child.”

So John went to the one-year training in Victoria’s Portsea while Jane stayed with her mum, raising first son David.

John again topped the class, “but I was the more mature at age 24-25 and had experience as a sergeant”.

Some of the training involved Leopard tanks at a nearby military base – and it was ‘love’ at first sight.

“The first time I saw one, I just looked at it and said ‘I want to be that guy in the turret’.”

Graduating as a young lieutenant, John reunited with Jane, and started his career as a tank officer, progressing up the ranks, “with more tanks and more soldiers.” Along with a number of other roles.

Then in 1988, a stroke of luck occurred when John, by now a Major, was selected to go on exchange with the British Army for two years.

“It was an opportunity to really broaden understanding of other armies, combat warfare, training, preparation – everything.

“We went off to join an old, respected tank regiment based in [West] Germany, a large British force along with a large American force.”

John and his family – now with second son Daniel - thus found themselves witness to what would become one of Germany’s most historic moments.

“West Germany was a wonderful place to live [despite the Cold War] and was safe as a very controlled and organised place, but also unsafe as there was a very strong IRA (Irish Republican Army) threat at the time.”

One lighter army pastime was to wind up the East German guards, one being John’s attaching of an olive-green-painted carpet tube with a cardboard nose cone and fake coat-hanger antennae stuck to the top of a Jeep, driving past the closest enemy guard locations. “[All the East German soldiers] were taking photos, so somewhere in Soviet records there’s photos of a rocket-equipped Jeep with unusual antennae,” John quipped.

On November 9, 1989, the Berlin Wall, which had split the city since the Soviet Union erected it in 1961, began to be dismantled.

“It all unfolded so quickly. There was a grassroots pressure began to build.

“There had been unrest in Poland but particularly in East Germany.

“Then there were quite a few massive demonstrations around sections of the Wall. The USSR was bankrupt trying to keep up with the Americans militarily.

“The trigger was when the East German guards at the Wall just decided not to contest things [so] people started climbing up the Wall and nothing was done about it. Before we knew it, they started cutting chunks out of it, then people started streaming through the checkpoints.

“It was an extraordinary time to be in Germany. Within days there were clappedout East German Trabant cars puttering around the roads spewing oil and smoke.”

By chance, John and the family had booked a holiday in Berlin to begin only a month after the Wall began falling.

“When we went, the party was still going. There were East German soldiers wandering around, selling their weapons and equipment.

“Checkpoint Charlie was still there, even though people were just walking through it. Like many of our age group raised on [Cold War] spy movies, to see it in real life – and to see it all collapse – was quite remarkable.”

The family took a train trip deep into the former East Germany to glimpse life behind the Wall.

“We may have been the first westerners there, because we got followed around; people were amazed to see us, they kept touching our clothing as it was so different to theirs.

“Everything was covered in coal dust and grime. It was a real eyeopener.”

Months later in mid1990 Saddam Hussein decided to invade neighbouring Kuwait in a bid to seize its oil, as he was also bankrupt.

“That led to Desert Storm, or the First Iraq War,” John said.

“US, UK, French heavy armoured divisions gathered – there were half a million troops on each side.”

John’s regiment didn’t go, “but I was sent to work directly for a British general who was in command of the British tanks”.

“I had quite a few months in the Gulf pre-war, in training.

“The air war began, then a pre-dawn artillery and air bombardment – then we launched the ground attack.

“I had a role in the forefront of the ground attack. It was non-stop combat situations for four to five days [and] constant battle stations - very intense but also very one-sided.

“We had thought we were going to be in for a real stoush – they had the numbers, the equipment – but it was all a façade.

“They didn’t have the leadership or the discipline to pull it off. And we crushed them.”

John said for him it was a “very bloody introduction” to the reality of combat.

“One learns pretty quickly there’s nothing good about it.

“It might look glamorous in the movies.

In reality, it’s terrifying, brutal and ugly,

So I walked through the minefield, picking a path that wasn’t too bendy and was wide enough for a tank

and at the end there’s a lot of dead people – and modern munitions do terrible things to the human body.”

As the combined army moved north, “it became a major job to just clear the bodies and the debris”.

“Estimates vary but in the order of 60,000 Iraqis were killed.

“That said, there were many local stoushes, and after a couple of those you feel you’re in a fight – so it wasn’t a walkover, but it was inevitable.”

The big breakthrough had occurred in February 1991, the Americans leading, and the British were to follow through the space, then swing round and smash the Iraqi armoured reserves.

“It was very key to get these under control, and to make sure the Brits knew what was happening, I was attached to the American First Infantry division – so I was with the lead troops that smashed into the Iraqi lines and over the next few days we laid waste to about 16km of minefields, ditches that had been filled with oil and set on fire, barbed wire and machine gun bunkers.”

The Americans had then cleared 16 fivekilometre lanes through the minefields for the British tanks to pass through.

“If you stayed in your lane you’d be fine,” John said, ominously.

“At one point, one of the lanes became blocked and some tanks had veered off and struck a mine. The American general turned to me and said: ‘Go sort that out’.

“I [drove] up to the back of the column of stopped tanks, then climbed over each of them to get to the head of the lane.

“I could see there was no other option but to cross to another lane a couple of hundred metres away.

“Some mines were partly exposed as they’d been there many months. Wind had

“So I walked through the minefield, picking a path that wasn’t too bendy and was wide enough for a tank, John convinced the lead tank to follow him, walking a distance then waving the tank to approach.

“As he closed on me, I kept thinking ‘if he hits a mine I’m going to cop this’, so I would crouch down as it came towards me, then I would stand up again, walk some more – and I was shaking, I can tell you – but we got through.”

Word had got back to the Brits about John’s escapade.

“When I got back to headquarters, the general’s first words to me were ‘A h, welcome back to the policeman – how was traffic duty today?’

“A very British understatement.

“A bit of a spooky day, that one was – but I did have plenty of others.”

In March 50 members of one of our Hinterland’s pioneering families, the Sivyer Family, gathered from all over Australia at the Cooroy Memorial Hall. Most noted of the pioneers was Spencer Sivyer - timberman, sawmiller, road and bridge builder, Inspector of Timbers for Queensland Rail, settler and farmer. Spencer selected 144 acres at Tinbeerwah in 1891 and the family moved to ‘Devon Park’ as they named it, in 1893.

Spencer died in 1914 and is buried in the Cooroy Cemetery, with family members still living in the Gympie/ Cooroy Districts. Sivyers Road, Tinbeerwah is named in remembrance of him.

FIGS

THE edible fruit of the Ficus Carica is thought to be one of the first plants cultivated by humans, with evidence of their domestication dating back as far as 9400BC. Native to Europe and Western Asia, figs are now grown in most temperate countries in the world and are in season throughout summer and into late autumn.

They particularly love our Sunshine Coast climate. With our mild cooler months expect to see them around locally until mid – late May. The perfect ripeness is very important when it comes to enjoying figs. A bit like avocadoes they should give a little when squeezed – if not leave them at room temperature for a couple of days until their natural sugars and juiciness develop. Once they are ripe, they deteriorate quickly, so eat them fast!

The simpler the better when it comes to figs, just eat them on their own, toss wedges of them through a rocket salad with goats cheese and walnuts, or have them for breakfast with yoghurt, honey and granola.

Excess fruit lends itself well to dehydrating, freezing or turning into jams or chutneys.

You’ll see a few varieties pop up over the season, most commonly White Genoa, Black Genoa and Brown Turkey.

FRESH FIGS WITH P R O S C I U T TO, B O C C O N C I N I AND BASIL This is one of my all-time favourite things to do with figs. The combination of textures and flavours and the sweet and sour effect you get from adding some balsamic vinegar is a match made in heaven. And it’s ready in about 2 minutes!

Ingredients: 4 figs 12 slices prosciutto 180gm baby bocconcini ½ cup basil leaves 50ml extra virgin olive oil 30ml balsamic vinegar

Method: Slice each fig into four or five rounds.

Layer the fig slices with the prosciutto, bocconcini and basil and drizzle with olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

Season with salt and cracked black pepper.

Serves 4 as an entree

“Damage assessed so far confirms our hinterland community has copped the brunt of this extreme weather and just like at the height of the emergency, we will be triaging our recovery efforts accordingly.

At least two thirds of damage reports are in the hinterland including major landslips, bitumen loss, sunken footpaths, pot-holing, stormwater damage and culvert damage.

“As we plan our road to recovery, we will keep the community informed about the status and timing of these recovery projects via the ‘work in progress’ page on our website,” he said.

“It will be a one-stop hub where you can check on how a project is progressing or get information on what is planned.”

“We are also accessing the funding through the Queensland Reconstruction Authority Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements for both emergency works and immediate reconstruction of community assets, so we can get moving on our recovery efforts across the shire,” Mr Sengstock said.

NOOSA CARE ARMY ON THE JOB Flood waters subside and recovery efforts continue as community volunteers take on the heavy lifting.

Comfort, support, passion and vital information for our Noosa community are just some of the ways that the Noosa Care Army is helping locals impacted by the recent floods.

Partnering with Volunteering Queensland, Noosa Council has created the Army to provide support for those still doing it tough in our community.

More than 280 volunteers have put on the gum boots to help clean up a number of properties.

Community Development Manager Alison Hamblin says, “The volunteers have helped in Boreen Point, Federal, Tewantin, Cooran, Pomona, North

Shore and Noosaville and now further cleanups are being taken on.”

Removing furniture and destroyed goods, hosing out properties, removing debris, packing personal items and shovelling dirt and mud were the first tasks to be tackled for locals.

“The mud was so severe it took four strong and energetic people to shovel the mud before they could hose down,” Noosa North Shore resident Glenda Lane said.

“I wish to thank you for all your support with this flood and vital information to help me and my neighbour - you proved to be a lifeline.”

My Child, My Choice VACCINATION rates have been a hot topic for a while now, even before the spectre of COVID changed all of our lives.

The Herd, by Emily Edwards, is a very timely novel that presents the vaccination argument from a variety of different viewpoints, and highlights the complexity around this divisive issue, and is my favourite read so far this year. The story is told through best friends Bryony, a freespirited, disorganised hippy, and Elizabeth, a controlled, confident, Type A personality.

Bry and Elizabeth are inseparable, they live on the same street, they are godmothers to each other’s daughters, and life is great in their little village of Farley. However, the two have completely opposing views on immunisation which, until the events of the novel, they

have dealt with by simply avoiding any deep discussions about the topic.

Elizabeth’s youngest child, 5-year-old Clemmie is unable to be vaccinated after suffering severe seizures as an infant. This means that the family needs to rely on herd immunity to protect Clemmie from disease.

Elizabeth is outspoken about the topic, adamant that Clemmie’s friends and family are all fully vaccinated, even to the point of emailing all guests to Clemmie’s upcoming birthday party with a request to confirm vaccinations status along with their RSVPs. Unfortunately, after a summer garden party, Bryony, her daughter Alba, and Clemmie all fall ill and it soon becomes apparent that there is a fastspreading virus threatening the village.

Traditional jazz revival AUSTRALIAN jazz great Brett Iggulden is coming to Noosa to help spark the revival and popularity of Traditional Jazz with his ‘Revival Band’ at the Noosa Heads Jazz Club’s monthly concert at The Majestic Theatre Pomona on Tuesday April 26.

Brett is a multi-instrumentalist who plays trumpet and alto and tenor sax and has delighted audiences all around the world in his long and stellar career since he and fellow teenager, drummer Allan Browne founded the Red Onion Jazz Band in Melbourne in the 1960s and revived it again in the 1990s.

He will be ably supported by one of Australia’s top jazz clarinettists, music teacher Paul Williams, with Jo Bloomfield, famous for her boogie woogie style on piano, and two of Noosa’s best known jazz band leaders, Richard Stevens (The Jazz Factory) on sousaphone and Rod Andrew (The Hot Peppers Jazz Band) on drums.

Ticket prices are $27 plus booking fee

THE President of Pomona’s Majestic Theatre, who is also Program Coordinator at community radio station Noosa FM, is a natural storyteller, with an immaculate way of telling them, which so well suits her long-time involvement in community activities wherever she has been.

Alison is also a survivor, having broken various bones from numerous accidents; she walks with a permanent limp following being run over by a truck; and she’s shrugged off a bout of cancer.

Born in Glossop situated on the edge of the Peaks District (“and named in the Domesday books”) in England’s Derbyshire District, Alison’s bloodline hails from cotton mill families – the Braddocks and the Hadfields.

“I’m a £10 Pom; we arrived in February ’67 on the ‘Castofelici’ and were the last ship through the Suez Canal before the SixDay war,” Alison said.

“It was a pretty interesting adventure for a six-year-old.

“I thought we were just going on holiday.”

She left behind the roots of her musical and theatrical influences, including a maternal grandmother who played piano in the local pub, and occasionally the big organ at Blackpool’s Tower Ballroom.

“Everyone knew Minni Braddock for sure. She played and sang for free most of the time and sometimes for drinks. They found many gin bottles under her bed when she passed on.”

Alison says her dad taught her how to play the comb and that was the first musical instrument she learnt to play.

“You could produce ‘music’ if wrapped Page 28 | Your Local Lifestyle April 2022

in tissue paper - but then I discovered the recorder and I used to play Christmas carols in the street. No one’s ears were safe after that.

“Our family was the only one in the school where all of us were in the school choir.

“My first theatre performance was at age five-ish as a rabbit.

“Then at 11 I got to be the Little Drummer Boy because none of the boys in class could sing and I looked like a boy so I got the part.”

Alison grew up on the Northern Beaches of Sydney, but wasn’t an aspiring student due to continuing musical influences around her, and the ability to pick up any instrument and get a tune out of it. Her parents bought her a guitar at 14 and she went on to learn flute and clarinet, but singing is her main love.

And she was a bit of a tearaway, enjoying the saddle of a motor- or dirt-bike rather than being saddled with homework.

“I was expelled from school – but I had the lead role in the school musical, so they had to bring me back.”

She enrolled in The Ensemble Theatre in 1978/79 in Kirribilli.

“My mother told me I wasn’t allowed to just do music/arts because it wasn’t stable enough, and I must learn to type, so she sent me to Brookvale Technical College.”

Having seen Mary Poppins as a child,

Alison particularly liked musicals, and featured in local productions of Oklahoma! and The Sound of Music.

“In SoM, I was one of the nuns,” she said.

“We used to go down to the shops to buy cigarettes dressed in our nuns’ gear – they actually thought we were nuns.”

Alison’s first job was with insurance brokers in Sydney’s Castlereagh St “when women were not allowed to wear pants”.

“I came rocking up wearing pants and I reckon they all fainted. The woman training me whispered ‘you’re not allowed to wear pants’; I said ‘WTF its 1978?’ really loudly. I couldn’t believe it.

“A few months later they dropped the ban, though.”

Her job was insuring pleasure craft and on file was John “Golden Tonsils” Laws’ three yachts and others based in the Whitsundays, “but I was never allowed to talk to him directly”.

After work, she would attend acting School at the Ensemble.

She also did an outside work spell for about six years, working with Sydney Water, where work gangs had few women, laying sewer pipes for leafy Palm Beach.

“I was the only woman working with 20 men. It was quite an eye-opener. I drove the dump truck. And I got to have a go on the backhoes and bobcats. Even graders, but they’re hard to control – I was the only woman plant operator.

“I came rocking up wearing pants and I reckon they all fainted.

“But I got thrown off the back of a truck, and it ran over me.

“That’s why I have a very bad limp: I went over the back tail of a council truck and my leg hit the towbar and I went under the truck, and my hair got caught and it rolled on me.

“I was spitting bitumen out of my mouth and couldn’t walk for a couple of weeks.”

“I admit I was fairly reckless in those days. I did motocross when I was a kid and I learnt to ride a motorbike on the road before I got a car. I bought it off my mother as she rode a motorbike for years before she got her first car at 50! I once got my foot caught between a ‘silent policeman’ and my foot peg; now all my toes are crooked.”

But it wasn’t until a few years later Alison decided Sydney wasn’t her cup of tea anymore that she found her community roots in the Blue Mountains, where she would spend 26 years.

“I moved there for a quieter life,” Alison said.

“I was running the local community radio station 2BLU FM and I got involved with the Winter Magic Festival doing outside broadcasts and then joined their committee.

“It is held in Katoomba on the winter solstice and is still going today. A group of artists started it to give the community something to do in the winter because it was so bleak.”

“The first one drew 3000, the next got about 5000 - I was musical director then later director.

“It had five stages, a ball, and street theatre acts.

“One year we ended up with 60,000 people - that’s when you have to know how big you want mto be.”

It was usually run by a core group of 10 people, with many off shoots from other community groups.

“When I was Musical Director I started ‘The Great busk-off ’ on the steps of Katoomba’s famous Savoy Theatre.

“It became a huge drawcard; I ran the busk off for 10 years,” Alison said.

“I would go looking for weird and wonderful acts for the festival and many came from Red Faces (from Hey Hey it’s Saturday) and the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras. And there were plenty to choose from in the Blue Mountains.

“As President of 2BLU FM I covered many live performances including the Blue Mountains Music Festival and The BM Multicultural festival.

“We did a lot with the Gunangarra people, setting up a The Koori Connection radio show on 2BLU FM - that’s what community radio’s about.”

Having bought a house Alison needed to earn some mortgage money, so went into real estate and had her own agency for 13 years. She also drove a cab for a while – “I looked at it as community work and it was great research for my business”.

“I really liked doing it. Usually just one or two nights a week as a hobby job.

“And when I built my house I built a totally native garden and I was chair of Wild Plant Rescue in Katoomba.”

Alison sold her Agency and spent several months overseas.

Before heading back home, selling her house and moving to the Noosa area.

“My sister lives in Noosa and I needed to move to a warmer climate. So here I am.

In keeping with her Blue Mountains experience, she has become a cornerstone of Noosa’s community radio station Noosa FM where, apart from having her own show Ultra Culcha, she’s program coordinator for the station.

“We’ve got about 52 presenters there.

Community radio is a world of its own when it comes to community arts.

“In Noosa it has an older demographic, but we’ve got about six people under 40 that’s impressive.

“I consider someone in Noosa under 40 to be a teenager.”

She has recently set up some good community programs: a women’s collective, and an indigenous and world music program.

Alison also said it “didn’t click” at first that nearby Pomona had a treasure like the Majestic Theatre.

“I’d heard of it, and passed it. I then rang the president Cherry Bright and joined the committee, and I’ve been on it since then about five years.”

Alison has played her part in turning around the financial and future fortunes of the old theatre, which at the time was in debt.

“They were still paying down debt when I joined, but they did it.

“Cherry and the committee got the silent films up and running again.”

COUNCIL will examine Noosa’s signage laws in a future workshop. It will help to ensure the laws still meet community expectations, following recent community angst after a circus was ordered to remove inflatable clowns. While Councillors may be judged on the current signage laws, they’ve had no opportunity to have input into them to date. A workshop will offer councillors a chance to examine the laws in detail, have a say and decide whether it may be necessary to make any amendments to the rules, and if it is, begin the process. It’s a long process that involves significant community consultation.

Following the recent severe weather event in February, Council has revised the completion schedule for the Hinterland Playground. It will now be open to the community in mid-April. The playground site received approximately 1000mm of rain during the flood event.

Onsite cameras captured the event and the site performed as modelled and predicted, draining within three hours once the heavy rain eased, and with no significant structural impact to key infrastructure.

Council staff and geotechnical engineers are continuing to monitor and assess the Black Mountain Road landslip.

We anticipate this road could be closed for six months.

We will of course work as quickly as we can. Myself, Council CEO Scott Waters and Director Larry Sengstock had very productive discussions with local residents about the pertinent issues impacting the Black Mountain community.

THE February floods devastated many parts of Wide Bay including Noosa, Cooroy, Pomona and Kin Kin, which suffered significant damage including flooding and landslips that washed away roads, leaving communities isolated and homes and businesses inundated.

A $558.5 million flood recovery package, jointly funded by the Commonwealth and Queensland Governments, has been established to provide financial support Noosa Council will receive a $1 million injection to assist with urgent clean-up works, and personal hardship assistance is also available through Centrelink for people who have suffered damage to their home or loss of income.

Grants of up to $50,000 are available for affected small businesses and not-for-profit organisations; $20,000 for sporting and community clubs; and $75,000 for primary producers, which can be used to cover costs of cleaning up, disposal of damaged goods, repairs to buildings, repairing or hiring equipment, and fencing repairs.

The loss of personal items, stock, crops and trade can never be replaced but these grants will provide some support through this very difficult time.

From March 20 Age Pension, Disability Support Pension and Carer Payment rates will rise by $20.10 a fortnight for singles to a total of $987.60 per fortnight, and by $30.20 a fortnight for couples combined to $1,488.80 per fortnight.

Asset test limits have been increased to $599,750 for a single homeowner or $901,500 for a couple, allowing more senior Australians to access a part pension.

A world-first food and beverage manufacturing facility will be built on the Sunshine Coast thanks to $33.4 million in federal funding that I announced with Industry Minister Angus Taylor recently.

The ‘Turbine Precinct’ will be a mega 20,000 m2 purpose built, collaborative food and beverage manufacturing centre located at the Sunshine Coast Airport.

The project is expected to create 131 new jobs during construction and support 687 once operational with $200 million in economic benefits delivered for the Australian economy each year.

SEQ CITY DEAL

All three tiers of government have come together to sign the SEQ City Deal - a joint commitment to deliver $1.8 billion worth of infrastructure that will transform the region. I was honoured to attend the historic signing event after years of working closely with Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Infrastructure Minister Paul Fletcher on the deal.

The City Deal will play an important role in delivering transformative projects for the Sunshine Coast and will provide access to two newly created funding streams worth $435.8 million. An additional $35.3 million will also be invested into the Sunshine Coast’s Blue Heart environmental project thanks to the newly minted Deal.

MANY residents are still recovering from the record-breaking deluge, with some areas in Noosa receiving our normal average yearly amount over several days. Our thoughts are with all impacted, as I can personally relate to the difficult cleanup job being faced, and gratitude to all who worked tirelessly and selflessly during the emergency and recovery phases.

A summary of available assistance can be found on my website at www.sandybolton.com/flood-assistance-2022/ TMR and Noosa Council have a mammoth job ahead repairing washouts, sink holes and landslips, and we are awaiting an assessment report regarding why the 10-tonne limit on Kin Kin Road was lifted, given that any repairs are short-lived due to the substrate being so wet. In Parliament during a Question Without Notice, I queried what the Minister for Transport and Main Roads would do to ensure greater safety on this dangerous road, only receiving reiterations regarding upgrades in response.

Housing opportunities remain critically low, further impacted by those displaced from the floods. The Yandina Historic House opened their refurbished museum last month. It’s packed full of interesting displays, old farm machinery and tools. I definitely recommend paying a visit.

I stopped in and had a chat with President Col and historian Audienne about the grant the society received from the State government to host an event for Queensland Day on Saturday, June 4.

Queensland Day is a celebration of Queensland’s birthday and its official separation from NSW as an independent colony on June 6, 1859. It is an opportunity to commemorate the state’s culture, heritage, people, places and industry.

IT’S been another busy week in Parliament, where the crisis gripping our state’s health services was a hot topic of debate. It’s alarming to think that elective surgery patients on the Sunshine Coast now have to wait longer than anywhere else in the state for their procedures.

More than 1 in 3 elective surgery patients don’t get their surgery on time at SCUH and Nambour, while nearly a quarter will wait longer than they should in Gympie.

The figures also show that ambulance ramping remains at crisis levels, with almost 1 in 2 patients left waiting on ramps, in hallways and along corridors. This is simply not good enough, and along with my colleagues, we will continue to call on the Government to fix the system through better resourcing, sharing data in real time, and cultural change.

Queenslanders, regardless of where they live, are entitled to receive the health care they deserve, when they need it.

On a brighter note, congratulations to Eumundi’s very own community champion, Joyce Turnbull, who was a finalist in the Senior Citizen of the Year category of the 2022 Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards. Joyce, a long serving member of Eumundi Rotary, has long been involved in many community initiatives, and instrumental in establishing Eumundi Voice. Thank you for your ongoing contribution Joyce, and congratulations on this deserving recognition.

The rise of eco-anxiety THE Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation (NBRF) is funding $10K to support a new Central Queensland University eco-anxiety research project in the Noosa Shire.

The research aims to understand why young people, aged 18-35, suffer ongoing feelings of hopelessness and despair about the future due to climate change, and how they can overcome their concerns by taking action.

Recent statistics show that 75 percent of young Australians think their future is frightening, and 84 percent said they were worried about climate change.

Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation Chair, Rowan Rafferty said this research could help provide answers on ways to improve wellbeing within our community.

“The Noosa Biosphere Reserve has recently experienced climate change evoked environmental disasters, from bushfires to severe wet weather, which are likely to have a detrimental impact on the mental health and wellbeing of citizens, in particular our young people,” said Mr Rafferty.

Along with supporting partners, Noosa Council, Zero Emissions Noosa, Greenfleet, and Noosa Landcare, NBRF’s funding will

enable the 12 month long project to evaluate the effectiveness of an intervention program to decrease levels of ecoanxiety.

Led by Annie Nolan, PhD Student at Central Queensland University, the project team will engage 150 participants and evaluate the impact of their proenvironmental behaviour on their levels of concern.

“Data collected through Headspace Australia has found a sudden spike in the incidence of emotional distress in people aged 18-35 was directly related to mounting anxiety about catastrophic global climate events,” said Ms Nolan.

“Tree planting is a positive action that can be undertaken relatively simply but is often overlooked in its importance in the fight against climate change.”

The tree planting event will run until April. The event will not only be helping to assist the Noosa community reach its target of zero emissions by 2026, it will also aid in the revegetation and restoration of native habitats for wildlife.

Good Shepherd Year 9 students Isobel, Anna and Caitlin led many bake sales and spider stalls and finished their campaign off by donating their long hair too.

Good Shepherd Year 12 student Alana Valotta’s grandmother was cheering in the crowd as Alana shaved off her hair. She was one of 16 student’s who committed to cutting their hair this year.

Noosa Shire Heritage walks

WELL it’s fair to say last month has not been the best, but we can still get out and explore. There are three Heritage walks to do in the Noosa Shire - Pomona, Cooroy and Tewantin.

Last week I checked out Pomona with our beautiful new addition to our family, five month old granddaughter Bonnie Louise. Bella also came along for the walk.

We started at the Mountain Stop Café, where the staff were very friendly and helpful.

From there cross the road to Stan Topper Park, named after a popular local school teacher. At the entrance to the park is a map showing you your journey. There are 24 places to see and learn about with all having a short story on an information stand. You can also google Noosa shire heritage walks, which will give you maps to all three walks.

Ok! So keep in mind I had a five

month old and a dog, both very well behaved, on the approximate 4km journey.

Most is foot-pathed and it is very well signed, but a couple of information stands are right on the curb, which I found hard with a stroller and dog. Apart from that we had a lovely walk finishing off at the Cooroora Creek dog friendly Park, which is number 24 on the walk. It took us a couple of hours to do the walk this included a couple of chats along the way.

The old Pomona train station has a great range of arts and craft, all available for sale.

On Saturday April 16 they are having an Art Market 9am-1pm in the paddock, so if you are interested in a stall call into the Gallery for more information. The Museum has lots information and its fun looking at all the old relics.

The Pomona Railway Station Gallery is Open: Tuesday - Friday, 10am-4pm, Saturday - Sunday, 10am-2pm Noosa Shire Museum is Open: TuesdayWednesday, 10am-3pm, Thursday Saturday, 10am-3pm. Adults $7, Seniors $5, Children $3 Anyone can do this walk, its reasonably flat and a wonderful walk down memory lane. The more energetic can take in the views of Noosa from the top of Mt Cooroora. Saturdays have the Markets with plenty of room for a picnic. And the playground next to the rotunda is a hit with the kids.

Gifts fine and rare

IS there something special about uniqueness? How about something that can only be produced in one place in the world and is delicious?

In early March, Terri Waller blessed the Permaculture Noosa guests with gifts fine and rare. It was not her words, which are highly sought as she seldom speaks publicly, but her delights prepared from the Galeru Bush Tucker Farm. As she told the story of her journey to purchase the farm through SevGen, a social enterprise NFP she founded to create community and hope for those disadvantaged, the value of what we were about to taste was emerging. At eleven acres, Galeru is the biggest Australian Indigenous farm in Australia. Galeru was planted out twenty years ago with rare bush tucker, then went into autopilot as the property was sold and the orchard went uncultivated. Last year SevGen brought new attention to the crops, which had been growing just fine the whole time, and this was a boom year for the fruits. The trees are full and the store rooms stocked.

With the abundance, chef Chris Jordan from Three Little Birds Cafe, prepared

desserts for 100 people. It dawned on me that I will be tasting ingredients few have ever tasted and these desserts are one of a kind. The dish; Fabbo Mountain pepper wattleseed brownie with fermented Davidson’s plum and candied wax apple and coconut yoghurt. You cannot get these in New York, Paris, Milan or Tokyo.

We are alone in the Cooroy Memorial Hall indulging in the one of the finest, rarest cuisines in the world. The rare Qld Davidson’s Plum Brownie exceeded all expectations.

This was a pivotal moment for Noosa. The phenomenal value of bush tucker became clear. This is an opportunity to set Noosa apart from everywhere else with Galeru as a centrepiece. I believe we are just realizing the opportunities around us to create unique, super healthy crops and foods.

GREETINGS locals, just a little snake update.

It’s still hatching season out there so lots of baby snakes around. Adults are out getting as much food as they can before it gets too cold. As the weather cools down over the next month we’ll notice a big drop in snake activity.

The flooding has meant the snakes are finding dry places for keep out of the water. They’re still around but not as crazy as peak season. So keep an eye out it’s not over just yet!

Aren’t Bandy Bandys the most beautiful snake. This one I rescued from a pool fountain. There was no way he was getting out by himself. One of my favourite species for sure! Luke

Caring for a not so Noisy Pitta AS the sun begins to shine again, WILVOS are still on alert for wildlife that may still be recovering from the extreme weather conditions.

Last week there was a call for a kingfisher.

A photo revealed this ‘kingfisher’ was actually a Noisy Pitta, an exquisite bird which inhabits rainforest and other bushland areas.

It is amazing that such a colourful bird can be so elusive. Often heard, they are not so easy to spot visually. Though they may call from the trees, if seen, they are usually on the forest floor, foraging for bugs or fallen

fruit in the leaf litter. Snails are a favourite in their diet. If you think you have Noisy Pittas in your surrounding bushland then you may find a midden heap of broken snail shells.

Nesting on the ground does make the noisy pitta an easy target for cats and foxes. They build their nests at the base of trees, beside tree roots or rocks.

Knowing this particular noisy pitta must be compromised to be so easily caught, I immediately checked it, in a closed bathroom in case it suddenly found a new lease of life! Though legs and wings were

fine, the eyes told their own story. Veterinary care was needed. The noisy pitta was checked out at the Eumundi Wildlife Centre, diagnosed with concussion, and will be in care until happily ready to return home.

PS: The Noisy Pitta was released back home

WELCOME back to our Mountain Biking Sunny Coast series. Its been a very wet month for every one and the trails have suffered badly, so badly in fact that lots have been closed until they can be repaired.

The Noosa Trail Network is mostly open but there is 1 or 2 sections that are closed, check council sites for info -Twin Hills Lookout to Cootharaba rd is closed due to land slide. Gympie’s Victory trails didn’t go under but they did suffer a lot of erosion damage and will likely stay closed till mid May as all the local contractors are busy fixing the local flood damage.

Caloundra’s Sugar Bag Rd Trails are all closed and will get a staggered opening as work gets completed, check the CORCA facebook page for updates. The associated

clubs and councils will be contracting professional trail builders for a lot of the work but there will also be working bees so that we can all pitch in.

The best place to find out about these working bees is the associated clubs face book page. Please do not do carry out any trail work or maintenance without approval from the appropriate authorities, it could get you in a lot of trouble and you would be risking very large fines.

Noosa’s Wooroi Trails are open but be careful as there has also been a fair bit of damage. What may have been a nice flowy line may now be a rutted mess so take care. Nambour’s Parklands is also open for riding but has also suffered a fair amount of erosion damage. The Noosa Trail Blazers will be hosting weekend trail

care sessions in Wooroi over the coming months, likewise Maleny Bush Rangers will also be hosting trail care sessions in Park Lands and CORCA at Sugar Bag Last weekend we had 40 helpers at one of these sessions in Wooroi. They were armed with shovels , mcleods (firemans rake) and rakes, Bloodwood trail was their mission and within a couple of hours it was looking pretty good though still a bit soggy. A fun morning was had, sweating in out in the humidity with lots of laughs and banter.

STEVE Hill, has been playing Rugby League since the age of five - playing over 20 consecutive years of park footy getting into the top mens A Grade at age 17.

Steve was a junior representative at Parramatta and played for many clubs during his career, including Wentworthville Leagues Magpies, Lalor Park Kookaburras, Toongabbie Tigers, and Valley United Spartans at Harbord, Manly. Later going on to be an assistant coach for the A Reserve Grade at Valley United, winning the premiership in his inaugural year.

Steve has a deep sporting background, across all sports, including cricket, where he has taken over 500 wickets and hit more than 5000 runs. Recently captaining the Tewantin-Noosa CC 3rd XI to a premiership title in 2020-2021.

NOT even wild weather and flooding could prevent the Javelin Qld State Titles from being held on Lake Cootharaba!

The regatta was scheduled for March 5 and 6 and initially looked like having to be postponed, but conditions eased towards the weekend and the organisers decided to hit the go button, and hope for the best.

Flood waters had receded to a level that allowed the event to go ahead in what were relatively light winds, but unfortunately, the effects of flooding elsewhere meant that only six boats were able to make it to the lake and compete. Nonetheless, there was plenty of close racing and no shortage of action, and the regatta was hailed a great success by all who attended.

The regatta was hosted by the Lake Cootharaba Sailing Club which is home to a developing fleet of new Javelin sailors that are leading a revival of the class in Queensland. The Javelin is a

high performance, single trapeze, 14ft two handed skiff raced competitively throughout New Zealand and Australia.

All being well, the Javelins will return to the lake in force for their South Pacific and Australian Titles in May... more than two years down the track from the event’s originally planned date in 2020, thanks to COVID. This could see upwards of thirty boats vying for the honours.

In the meantime, Lake Cootharaba Sailing Club has plenty of club racing and several more regattas scheduled for the rest of its sailing season, including the Easter Allboats Regatta (April 15-17), and the May Weekend Regatta (April 30 – May 1).

The Easter Regatta includes the State Titles for the spectacular A-Class catamarans, the fastest single-handed small catamarans in the world.

C O O R OY S E R V E S U P N E W T E N N I S C OAC H WHEN James Webber first heard about the opening for a tennis coach position at Cooroy Tennis Club he was reading about it on his laptop on the other side of the world in London.

“It was the middle of a COVID lockdown period in London and my wife and I were already planning to return to Australia to live so I decided to apply. I’ve always loved the hinterland area and thought Cooroy would be a great place to develop a tennis program,” said James.

Prior to the move James had been running one of the largest recreational tennis programs in London but with his wife Viktorija having just given birth to their baby boy Arthur, the family were ready for a move away from the city.

So far it has proven to be a great decision. Despite the rain and floods both junior and adult players have come out to try tennis coaching in the newly revamped tennis program at the club.

“Cooroy Tennis Club is such a great little club with a really enthusiastic committee but after COVID the coaching program was in need of some rejuvenation.

Since the beginning of February we’ve had over 80

players participating on the coaching program and are now looking at taking on an assistant coach to cope with demand,” James explained.

Free trial lessons on any group lessons have been on offer at the club with the goal being to provide as many new playing opportunities to people as possible. A new junior competition squad program for experienced players is also being developed alongside starter tennis lessons for those new to the game.

As James explained, “I’ve coached all over the world and have managed programs at the National Tennis Centre in the UK but at this stage in life I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. My family are loving the area and I am excited about how the tennis club is developing.”

‘Super Mum’ to compete in Turkey Elite Women’s Championships

RECENTLY in Melbourne at the Women’s World Championship selection trials, Impact Boxings SUPER MUM Ange Harries pulled off a career best performance winning the 60kg Elite Women’s division and has now booked her seat to compete in Istanbul, Turkey.

After a two year lay off from the ring where Ange focused on her role as the Boxing Queensland Referee and Judges Coordinator, this super mum decided to give boxing one last crack. Ange had been competing at the highest level as an Elite female boxer for many years before deciding to take a break from the competing side of the sport so she could focus on building Boxing Queensland’s Referee and Judge numbers, and helping with programming and educating her new recruits.

“Out of the blue I received a phone call from Ange asking me if she should nominate for the selection trials. Now working as a full time PT she is always in the gym and always fit, so I said why not, if you’re keen, then I’m keen, so let’s

do this!” Coach Mark Evans said.

This being the case we now had 3 weeks to prepare for this event.

Ange had to box twice to win the Gold medal. “Her bout on Thursday night was the best that I have ever seen her box. Even after a two year break she looked extremely sharp and focused winning that bout via a unanimous decision. This win gave her the confidence that she needed for her finals bout. Once again Ange took control of this bout from the opening bell and never looked in doubt of getting the win. Two fights in two days after a two year break and now she is off to represent her country at the Elite Women’s Championships is pretty damn impressive !!

“As her Coach I could not be more proud and nobody deserves this opportunity more than Ange,” Coach Mark Evans said.

Ange will continue to train in Cooroy until she flies to the AIS for a preparation Camp prior to her departure in early May. Good Luck Ange Harries!! We are all behind you!!
