It is much loved, it is lots of fun, there is nothing like it and it is on our doorstep!

It’s the Australian Body Art Festival and you can experience it from Friday 9 to Sunday 11 April in Cooroy.

Words like unique and special are easy to bandy about, but this festival definitely offers something that others don’t.

The festival was founded on body painting, inspired by the World Body Painting Festival

in Austria. The body painting is just one of the things that gives this event its uniqueness – walking, breathing artworks that are transient – washing away at the end of the day. The festival has evolved into much more than just

With a theme of Time Travel this year you can expect to be transported from the distant past to the mysteries of the future,” said event manager, Danielle Taylor.

“After a cancellation just weeks prior to last year’s festival due to the Covid pandemic, participants are eager for the return of the festival. Everyone has been very understanding that this year’s event is going to be a little different as we are operating under a Covid safe checklist.

But we know it is still going to be great and we’ve added a few new things to add some extra fun!”

There is a Wearable Art Competition with parades featuring funky fashions made from recycled treasures. New to the festival this year, is a Surfboard Art Competition with the boards being auctioned on the Sunday afternoon. Another new addition is a rock art installation, and all attendees are encouraged to contribute to it by creating their own piece of rock art at the festival.

There are also art installations, live music, street performers, a wonderful selection of market stalls and delectable food.

The participants, whether they are volunteers, artists, performers or even spectators have become like family. Many of them come back year after year and it is like a reunion where people catch up and enjoy not just the art being created but the art of being present and connecting with others. Somehow this group manages to be tight knit and still welcome in newcomers and encourage them to get involved. There is something magic about this festival and we hope that it continues for many years to come!

Under the Covid Safe Checklist the format is slightly different this year with the event split into sessions for each competition. It is still free to attend but there are limited numbers to ensure social distancing, so spectators are urged to secure their spot by booking on the website to avoid disappointment.

STREET FIGHTER TO GENTLE GIANT S C H O O L O F H A R D K N O C KO U T S B E C O M E S ST R I N G O F B I G H I T S MARK Evans’ destiny could have been a train-wreck, had it not been for some self-discipline, and a helping hand from ‘Kerry Packer’.

The now-highly awarded boxing coach, who runs Impact Boxing in Cooroy, has come a long way from the angry young man he started out in life as.

Born in Melbourne suburb Preston, with family members “well connected and pretty heavy”, Evans was spirited away at a young age with his family to safer grounds.

“We moved to Adelaide; were we spent a lot of time in housing commission areas. I was never a bad kid myself, but I was disengaged, angry. I grew up in a home with an alcoholic father in a not so favourable domestic situation.

“At a very young age I was forced to stand up and help my family.”

Evans got into his fair share of minor trouble with the law, but other than a couple of watch-house sleepovers, he avoided serving at Her Majesty’s pleasure.

But it was a close thing.

“I was never one who snatched handbags or broke into houses – I just grew up on the streets dealing with sh*t,” he said. And street fighting was always going to be part of that gig.

“My mum was the softest, most beautiful kind-hearted woman you could meet. It used to break my heart when she saw the trouble I got into, and she had enough to deal with with what was going on at home, but I think she also understood I was troubled.

“I was an A-grade student to about year 8 – then I was just over it.”

But that’s when he met a Salvation Army

captain by the name of Kerry Packer, a social worker appointed by the courts to help sort Evans out.

“If anything, it was him who turned me around. He never preached; he spoke to you like a man.

“He said ‘You’re at a crossroads: if you turn left you’ll have nothing left, if you turn right you’ll be alright.

“I had mates in juvenile detention and later, jail, and I was starting to get caught up in ‘who cares anymore’, with peer pressure. I was stuck in the middle.”

But at least he was establishing a reputation you ‘didn’t mess with Mark’, to help him survive the streets.

“I was quite wiry back then. I did martial arts and was into boxing for a while, and one of my uncles who was well connected said ‘as soon as you see

the fire in their eyes, put that fire out’.

I carried that attitude around for a while.”

Maybe not the best advice, but Evans admits the competition and the primal sense of fighting to win was motivating and helped him acquire some self-discipline and boundaries. “(Packer’s) voice stuck in my head. I actually thought about becoming a social worker, but I had blown my school grades by then.”

After a few confused years traveling the country and not doing very much, Evans went back to boxing, quite by chance.

He was in his mid-twenties when a mate suggested he travel up to Gympie “and see a couple of old blokes running a gym up there”.

“So I went there, and within three weeks the trainer, Dennis Manger said

‘you’re fighting this weekend. I said: ‘I’ve only been training three weeks’, and he said: ‘but you’re pretty handy though’.

“I went to Nambour Crushers, he matched me with an army bloke with 10 wins in 10 fights.

“He hit me with the biggest punch and I saw stars. Somehow I lasted three rounds.

He said later ‘I’ve been knocking down people with some of these hits’.

“I said: ‘Don’t worry mate, my head was gone, it’s just my legs wouldn’t lay down’.

We had a chuckle then went and had a beer.”

Evans trained under Gympie boxer Johnny Burke, as well as help run Manger’s gym, but with a new child in Evans’ thenmarriage the commute from Cooroy was taking a toll – Manger meanwhile was rapidly heading downhill with punchinduced dementia.

That was the trigger for Evans to open his own training gym, in a shed on his Cooroy property. Some of the kids at Gympie were prepared to make the Cooroy trip, and Impact Boxing was born, Evans registering the business in 2005.

Since then, Evans has been welldocumented for taking kids around the world, having them compete in Commonwealth and Olympic Games events, developing national training camps for Boxing Australia, and much more.

But Evans’ main love is working with local kids – boys and girls - with a particular emphasis on special needs kids.

Kids are referred by schools and many others. I work closely with (Cooroy Police Senior Sergeant) Mal Scott – we’re good mates.

Evans also runs a painting and rendering business where he can offer work to some of the kids where continuing school just isn’t going to work for them.

“I’ve always believed there’s no such thing as a bad kid; they’re products of their environment. A lot of kids’ are witnessing alcohol and drug abuse within their home environment. “These kids are witnessing all this stuff.”

Evans is seen as a godsend to many in the community, whether they’re kids needing mentoring, schools or youth organisations seeking to re-direct youngsters at risk.

He may be hugely muscular, but his heart is bigger still.

wee’ boxers coming through; we have about 30 kids three nights a week.

“I’m really enjoying working with the special needs kids. They can be a challenge but they seem to gel with me.”

Evans says he tries to integrate them into mainstream classes.

“I want to teach the other kids just because some are different, you can’t ostracise them.”

And they love it. The kids’ faces light up whenever they walk into the gym, and

“It’s not for everyone but a lot of troubled kids are angry and this is a good way of getting it out of their system,” he said.

“Let them unload on me until they tire.

“And their bus trip home is always better than the bus trip up.”

A lot of the shire’s kids have Evans to thank for his mentoring and support skills.

“Some kids who are disengaged are those who would have gone through the justice system. We try to break that cycle before the kids realise that’s the life they’re going to live.”

Impact took up new space at Cooroy’s new Taylor Court business precinct and it opened in February, which he runs

with his partner, Kylie Richards.

“I’m hoping to wind my business back and focus on the gym, my life-long goal,” Evans said.

“I always had a vision of a big gym with an office upstairs – which I’ve just recently achieved this year – after 15 years of the little shed back home, which he will always hold great memories of.

“Geographically we probably shouldn’t have had any champions coming out of there but for three years in a row we had more Australian champions in that shed than any other gym in this country. We’ve had a huge success with the kids.”

Evans said while he never wore the green and gold as an athlete, he’s proud that many of his charges have done – and equally proud he’s worn the colours as a coach.

“My favourite saying is ‘Service to others is the rent you pay for your time here on Earth’.”

And is the now 53-year-old still angry?

“No. That angry young Mark left a long time ago.”

Makeover for the stopover

Landscape designer, John Hope, and Cooroy Chamber of Commerce President, Chris Bell, review the makeover plans for the RV Stopover

THANKS to a recent initiative from Tourism Noosa, the Cooroy RV Stopover on Mary River Rd is about to get treated to a much needed makeover.

The RV facility is managed by the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce who made a successful application under a unique oneoff funding opportunity, the Noosa Villages Tourism Funding Boost.

Local landscaper designer, John Hope, prepared the plans which will see extensive planting of the site, Also included is an entry statement that will compliment the soon to be constructed Hinterland Adventure Playground, and the heritage of the town.

According to Chamber President, Chris Bell, the landscaping project is regarded as stage one, of three, which over time, will see the current ‘paddock’ transformed into a visitor experience. With the increase in domestic travel and in particular, the popularity of the RV and caravan market, there is no doubt that Cooroy will be welcoming more visitors, coming to enjoy what the Hinterland has to offer.

The landscaping project will cost in excess of $20,000 and is scheduled for completion by the end of June this year.

Masterplan to shape future trail network upgrades COUNCIL this week ratified a masterplan for the Noosa Trail Network.

It comes as work is set to begin on upgrades to the Pomona-to-Cooran Trail.

Mayor Clare Stewart said the masterplan set outs an exciting vision.

“It’s one that will deliver a nationallysignificant trail network that links the coast to the hinterland and paves the way for new tourism opportunities,” she said.

“The masterplan sets the scene for

Noosa’s Trail Network to become a world class attraction in its own right, showcasing the Noosa Biosphere and its iconic destinations.

“Late last year the Queensland and Australian Governments announced a $1.6 million Local Economic Recovery (LER) Grant to get the ball rolling, which is great news.

“That investment will deliver improvements to the 9km Pomona-to-

Cooran trail, including better signage, trail definition and better access, plus car parking, a shelter shed, bike racks and horse riding facilities,” the Mayor said.

Acting Director, Environment and Sustainable Development, Anthony Dow, said “We look forward to seeing locals and visitors enjoy the new facilities and upgrades on the Pomona-to-Cooran Trail in 2022.”

NOOSA COUNCIL IN BRIEF A development application to build a 246-unit retirement village at the entry to Cooroy has been unanimously rejected by councillors.

The Gemlife proposal would have seen a partial land swap with the financially struggling Cooroy Golf Club, however it failed on at least 19 counts, including being in conflict with the SEQ Regional Plan, the Noosa Plan and the Cooroy Lake Macdonald local code.

It also threatened agricultural land, water quality feeding the Lake Macdonald catchment, and would impact on the character of Cooroy’s entry statement at the town’s edge.

proposal would also have blocked off any potential future use of the ‘empty’ leg of the Myall St/Nandroya Rd/Bruce Highway access roundabout for a future town bypass to the coast.

Short-term accommodation local law tweaked

NOOSA councillors have further amended requirements in a lengthy debate for a new local law to manage noise and disturbance to residents from ‘party house’ short-term accommodation (STA) lettings.

The revised and amended proposals, which include a range of penalties for repeat offenders including potential deregistration, will be released to the community for further consultation before being adopted.

The employment of a security company, to be limited to observation of problem STAs and gathering data, similar to a scheme employed at Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, is also being considered.

But it wasn’t enough for Cr Tom Wegener, who voted against the motion at the council’s General Committee meeting on March 15, saying they would not satisfy residents living adjacent to such STAs as the actions they would need to take would disappear into a “council vacuum”.

He said more onus would be placed on residents to make a complaint, more than once if need be, followed by a written report to council, but if the complaint issue was on a weekend, council staff would not act on it until at least the following Monday.

The only other option for more immediate action was to call the police – who were too often busy elsewhere on weekends.

“The people impacted want answers,” Cr Wegener said.

“I don’t think this [proposal] says they’ve been heard. It offers very little change.”

The motion was carried 4-1, Cr Wegener the sole dissenter – a vote echoed in the following Ordinary Meeting (Crs Stockwell and Lorentson not present due to conflicts of interest and Cr Finzel absent) on March 18.

What has also been clarified is the local law would also apply to all existing STAs as well as new applications.

CEO Brett de Chastel said the law would apply to existing STA operators in the same way that swimming pool owners were once required to retrofit safety fences to reduce child drownings.

Strategic Planner Anita Lakeland said the law would apply to all STAs and homehosted accommodation “except those visitor-only sites and the Hastings St Mixed Use precinct proposed for exemption”.

“The local law is not approved yet – but it is proposed in the draft that a contact person who manages the property and deals with complaints be nominated,” Ms Lakeland said.

“The person needs to reside [at or be at] their place of business (if it is a letting agency) within 20 minutes of the premises and respond to complaints within 30 minutes.

It will apply to all existing and future STA regardless of when they were approved.”

The community consultation period will start on April 9, running to May 14.

NOOSA Council has secured almost 90 hectares of Boreen Point land for conservation in the latest environment levy purchase.

Council’s purchase of 88 hectares of land at Boreen Point will protect significant vegetation, including koala habitat.

The 88-hectare property, split over two adjoining blocks on Lake Flat Road is known koala habitat and home to at least two vulnerable plant species.

Environment Levy Working Group spokesman, Cr Tom Wegener, said the $900,000 purchase was a win for the environment.

“Noosa prospers from environmental protection – it’s what makes us special.

This purchase will conserve old growth vegetation, habitat for vulnerable species and a known koala corridor. It’s a win for the Noosa residents and another positive

step towards our Man and Biosphere global goals,” Cr Wegener said.

“Purchasing land with the Environment Levy further assists with reaching the Noosa Environment Strategy target of ‘by 2030, half of all land in Noosa Shire is managed for its environmental values’.”

Council’s Principal Environment Officer, Peter Milne, said the site was heavily vegetated with open forest and rainforest listed as ‘of concern’ vegetation under the Vegetation Management Act 1999.

“The vulnerable Southern Penda and Bacon Wood plant species have been identified on the land, and there are also records of the vulnerable Boronia keysii,” he said.

“It is known koala habitat and will be a great addition to Council’s bushland reserve estate.”

Mr Milne said the land was also close to existing nature refuge land and the Great Sandy Cooloola National Park, offering important wildlife corridor potential.

The purchase settled on February 22.

It all adds up for Sunny Coasters

What started out as a crazy idea over Thai food has grown into a thriving business for Sunny Coast Accountants co-owners and directors Jody Alden and Sarah Keily.

Every year since combining forces five years ago, the business has doubled its clientele from word-of-mouth referrals and isn’t showing any signs of slowing down.

Initially working from home then moving into a small office, the business has now grown into a second bigger office in Cooroy with seven employees and looking to make it eight.

When asked what prompted the leap into starting an accounting firm together, the directors explained that initially, they were looking for more flexible work hours. Jody shared that both women had young children and were frustrated at trying to work traditional hours and deal with an unhappy boss when a child was sick.

“With our own business we do a lot of extra hours, but that gives us the flexibility to take our kids to sport or be at home when they’re sick,” Sarah explained.

The business partners also found it frustrating how other accounting firms they’d worked for had managed and billed clients. “Just plugging in figures from 18 months ago and focusing on filling out a time sheet meant you couldn’t develop a relationship, so couldn’t give the best result to the client,” Sarah said.

“We wanted to be more proactive in helping people with their tax and take

on more of a business adviser role,” she explained.

Jody added that one of the things they wanted to approach differently was the use of time sheets. “I can’t stand the idea of having to charge a client for every six minutes.” Jody explained that if you’re passionate about your work your brain doesn’t turn off when you clock off. The women see the benefit in making a personal connection. “We see our role as a trusted advisor for our clients and when they want to talk about something, the first person they’re going to talk to is us their accountant,” Jody said.

Going into business together also gave the women the opportunity to choose their own career paths. It also meant they could utilise skills that complimented each other. Jody specialises in tax compliance and small business and Sarah in superannuation. Sarah explained that in the accounting industry not many firms can offer exceptional expertise in both as they tend to do one or the other. “I knew Sarah’s brilliant technical knowledge - especially when it comes to superannuation – was being underutilised and not appreciated,” Jody enthused.

Sarah added that earlier in her career working for other firms she found a lot of superannuation portfolios weren’t managed well. “This is someone’s life savings and

if it’s not done properly it affects their dependants, their beneficiaries - it affects their everything,” Sarah said.

“It’s frustrating when you’ve got that knowledge and you don’t understand when they’re not being done properly,” Sarah said.

Sunny Coast Accountants saw a huge surge in a need for their services during Covid. “We were working from home, educating kids from home, and effectively our workload doubled – talking to all of our clients,” Jody explained.

Sarah shared that’s when the women’s partners realised how hard they work.

“With ATO changing the rules so regularly and then the news constantly reporting something new that our clients would need reassurance about… we were so busy, both of our partners basically had to become stay at home dads.”

Jody added last year’s craziness cemented for them which clients really trusted their knowledge and appreciated what they do for them. “We felt really appreciated and rewarded for all the time and effort we have put into our clients over the years,” Jody said.

“We also got a lot of wine and flowers,” Sarah laughed, then added, “People say, ‘Oh, I couldn’t be an accountant, what do you do all day - crunch numbers?!’ – We talk! To a lot of people!”

When asked if they’re happy they started a business together, Jody and Sarah look at each other, shake their heads, smile, then share they still can’t believe how successful their accounting firm has become in such a small amount of time. The ongoing issue of heavy haulage in our hinterland is a priority, and I met last week with the Minister Scanlon regarding the issues surrounding the review process of environmental authorities. TMR continues to work in the interim on vegetation management, patching and pavement testing in order to deal with the impacts to infrastructure, whilst efforts from the Roundtable progress. Updates are available at www.sandybolton.com/ noosa360/ Design work has begun on the Six Mile Bridge #7 project, with an expected completion date by late 2021 and construction scheduled to start in the first half of 2022. Good news yes, however until then we have to make further improvements at this one laner whilst signage options are being looked at by community regarding the Kin Kin Pomona Road and connecting roads. We await a response from Minister Scanlon regarding a review of the review processes of environmental authorities.

I had a wonderful time at the Nambour RSL for International Women’s Day this month. I invited all the local primary and secondary female school leaders and parents to attend a morning tea to congratulate them on taking leadership roles. Each school group had an opportunity to address the crowd and speak on what leadership means to them. As a member of the Palaszczuk Government, I am committed to making sure that we have equal representation in government, and I am proud to see these amazing young women grow and take up these roles in our community.

The Palaszczuk government has added to the success of it’s single-use plastic bag ban and the container refund scheme and has also banned single-use plastic (SUP) & polystyrene straws, stirrers, plates, and cutlery. The ban comes after thorough community consultations last year showing of the nearly 20,000 submissions received, a huge 94% were in favour of banning SUP straws, stirrers, plates, and cutlery.

Less plastic waste means less litter in our amazing natural environment and less garbage going into landfill, while also providing an opportunity for local producers of alternative products.

Cooroy gets in the spirit Since Uncle Bill gave him his first gin and tonic, back in 1995, Brian Bedding was hooked on spirit

But it wasn’t until 2017 when Brian and wife Nadia decided to turn their love of drinking spirits into a business and open their own distillery. “My wife and I did a trip to Tassie for our anniversary in 2017 and we tacked on a cheeky beer and whisky tour at the end of the holiday – from that day forth it was going to be brewing or distilling,” Brian shared.

The couple started experimenting with distilling at home. “In Australia, anything over a five litre still you need to be licenced for, so we got ourselves a five litre still and started making gin on a Sunday - one at 11 and one at 12 – you can do a couple of litres in less than an hour - so we’d make two new gins, mix up some G&T’s and go and have a swim in the pool,” he said.

“I think we’d done 160 distillations on the little one – which is quite expensive when you’re putting 40% vodka into it,” he shared.

After years of saving, researching and planning, the couple’s dream became a reality last December when they opened the doors to 20 20 Distillery in the Cooroy industrial estate.

20 20 Distillery, which refers to having 20/20 vision (not the year 2020), has been going from strength to strength ever since, attracting gin connoisseurs from Brisbane, Gympie, the Gold Coast and further afield (when border restrictions have allowed).

The elegant cellar door, offering cocktails and tasting platters, has also been embraced

by Sunshine Coasters and especially hinterland locals.

To keep up with growing demand, Brian explained they’ve gone from making two litre batches in little pots to now distilling in a 700 litre vat he’s called Gene. “As the batches get larger, I’ve had to adjust the recipes to keep the same flavour profiles we developed in the smaller runs,” he shared.

The spirit run to make a gin doesn’t take long, around six to eight hours, but it’s the choice of high quality, traditional botanicals macerated for 24 hours in the 96% ethanol that gives 20 20’s signature gin, the East London Dry, its flavour. “Being such a high percentage, it really does strip all the oils out of the botanicals,” Brian explained.

When asked what makes 20 20 gin taste unique, Brian shared he’s a traditionalist who doesn’t want to overcomplicate things. “I switched, I suppose to drinking a London Dry when Tanqueray first hit its heights in the mid two thousands – and also because I’m from East London – and 20 20’s signature white spirit pays homage to where the original London Dry gin came from,” he shared.

Brian explained there are only eight or nine original gin botanicals and he uses seven of those, as well as macadamia shells.

The oil from shells stripped out during the maceration process gives, “a really silky, warm mouth feel and because the oil stays in your mouth it holds the botanicals. Sixty seconds after swallowing, you can still taste my gin.”

“So that’s the idea – to give you that lovely velvety mouth feel,” Brian enthused.

Brian is also planning to experiment with infusing flavours for smaller, seasonal batches. 20 20’s Founders’ Club (which currently has around 100 members) get the opportunity to try all of the gins first.

“We’ve got a navy strength gin named after my Granddad George who was a stoker in the WW2, coming out in June and more than 16 gins in the pipeline over the next six years,” he shared.

When asked if the alchemy of experimenting with flavours was addictive, Brian enthused, “there are 110,000 Australian botanicals no one’s even tried, so it’s really limitless – it’s wherever your imagination takes you.”

“It’s kind of like a risotto – you’ve got a base and there’s just so many things to try and combine it with.”

Brian added that you also need to have a flair for flavours. But that a lot of it is trial and error. “Sometimes it leads you down a rabbit hole you wish you didn’t go down… then sometimes it’s magic!” he said.

Creating a gin flavoured with botanicals that are unique to the Noosa hinterland is also planned for future Gin runs. “We do want to work with the local Gubbi Gubbi and, get some insider knowledge, do some local foraging and find out what’s local to us in Cooroy,” Brian shared.

Now he’s perfected 20 20 Distillery’s signature gin and wholesale of the London Dry has begun rolling out, Brian is keen to move onto the next challenge – whisky!

Unlike gin, whisky is a much bigger investment of both money and time. “We saved really hard and have made a big capital push up front, so we were able to get enough barley and barrels for 10,000 litres and that’ll be our first year’s quota,” Brian said.

Most people who make whisky make a white spirit first, but Brian explained it is actually beer and whisky that are brothers, as the process is much the same - bar one step. “Under [Australian] legislation, whisky, rum, brandy, all have to be on wood for a minimum of two years to be called those names.”

“Any time before that it is still a newmake spirit – or they call it a cane spirit if its rum,” he explained.

“You can make a reasonable whisky in two years but you’ve got to use 20 litre, small format barrels so the whisky matures a little quicker,” Brian said.

Club members will regularly taste the spirit to gauge how it’s maturing. With a twinkle in his eye, Brian bemoans this is one of the most taxing parts of the job.

With a much longer maturation time, getting the flavour of the whisky right is a big challenge. Brian explained because there are so many variables, at the moment they’re sticking to one yeast and a plump barley from New Zealand. “[We’re] making sure we get everything spot on the first time around, but once we go through our first ten thousand litres, then we’ll start doing small batch stuff – only do two barrels of one flavour – and play around a bit more with our yeast,” he shared.

“We’d like to try a Belgian yeast that has a banana flavour and experiment with making a tropical whisky because it’d suit the climate and location – we’re in the tropics - so seems a good fit,” he said.

Starting this new business venture, the biggest challenge for Nadia and Brian has been keeping their day jobs to fund their dream distillery. Brian has been doing FIFO since 2011. He’s a construction manager in the mining industry and flies from here to Perth (five hour flight), stays there the night, then flies another two hours up to a mining site near Karratha.

“It’s a means to an end, unfortunately the capital investment in starting a distillery isn’t low – a lot of time and money – but it’s just the way it rolls,” Brian shared.

Until the wholesale market for the East London Dry gin takes off – which is the primary goal of the distillery –Brian will keep having nine days over in WA and five back in Cooroy brewing and distilling. “I’m

lucky to have my best mate Danny who looks after the tasting bar when I’m not here - we’ve been mates for 20 odd years, but also the equipment is designed around me being FIFO,” Brian said.

Brian said he, Nadia and Danny are happy to be creating artisan spirits and really happy to share them with “all the lovely people that come in.”

“We’ve been very humbled by all the comments and appreciation. It’s certainly something I never expected and it’s a really good feeling.”

Wartime childhood forges an RSL veteran S GT R O N S U T TO N ’S M E M O R I E S O F H I N T E R L A N D WA R Y E A R S By Alan Lander RON Sutton may never have fought a war, but he lived through one, prepared for one, and has been a stalwart for the RSL for more than 45 years.

He’s earned his stripes. All three of them.

The Cooroy larrikin, 86, is also a collector of World War Two military vehicles, which have often been used for Anzac Day marches, but he’s had to lighten the load - they’re in high demand these days.

“I had four until recently, and sold one,” Ron said.

“I didn’t even have to offer it for sale. All I had to do was say how much.”

Ron and his wife Betty were both born locally in the thirties, and both grew up during the conflict of World War Two. “I was eight years old in 1942 and well aware of what was going on,” Ron said.

“I lived at Belli Park, we had staging camps all around.”

One night he had an unexpected visitor.

“This bloke turned up at our place, a big, bronzed soldier.

“I thought he worked for my dad pre-war, but he had been a Rat of Tobruk.

“His name was Len Barritt, he’d come back and didn’t want to go to New Guinea, so he was AWOL. “He was here for a couple of weeks and the authorities somehow got to know, and the last time I saw him he was going down the road in the ‘birdcage’ (military paddy wagon), and they took him – and sent him to New Guinea.

“Len was KIA (killed in action) at Milne Bay.” That was an indelible thing put in my mind forever.”

But there was plenty of cooperative interaction with the troops, whether Australian or American.

“There was a fuel dump near where we lived full of 40-gallon drums of petrol.

I’d never seen so much fuel. Four guys lived under a tent fly to service it. It was Australian vehicles only.

“Half a bucket of milk went round there every morning … and there wasn’t any petrol rationing in our area,” Ron said wryly.

“At night, the diggers came round with shirts stuffed with things from the kitchens, Mum would bake cakes while they played cards all hours of the night - and that happened all over the country, where these people were miles away from home, looking for a bit of social life.

“A dance was held at Belli Hall every Saturday night.

A solider tried to drive a Jeep up the steps one night to get in the hall.

“He couldn’t get it up the last steps. My dad had to persuade him it wasn’t a good idea.”

Compulsory national Service was introduced after the war, and as soon as Ron turned 18 in 1952, he had to do 98 days’ basic training full time - three annual camps - and was bound over five years for call-up.

“We had four instructors – three of them were ex-Rats of Tobruk. One of them Lt. Fred Fink was awarded the Military Medal in the desert then got a bar to it in New Guinea. “(So) when they said ‘jump’, we said ‘yes sir’.

“Discipline was not too bad for me as I had been to boarding school: I understood ‘you take orders, you don’t give them’.”

He also passed the challenging sergeant’s exam before the whole conscription setup was disbanded.

Otherwise, a long career in the timber industry took up Ron’s life, including running, with three partners, their own successful timber mill at Wondai which he increased from 17 employees to 46 in his time.

Ron joined Cooroy’s RSL in 1974, rising to become one of the great pioneers of the club, ensuring the building standing today was made a reality – and playing a founding role in building the estimated 4000-membership of the club today, with 258 sub-branch members.

Ron was also the force behind Cooroy RSL being only the second club to open membership up to citizens.

His wife Betty has also been a driving force for the RSL, having spent the last 20 years compiling a written and pictorial history of the town’s RSL. It’s arguable that World War Two veterans have been somewhat overshadowed by the focus upon the events of World War One and Gallipoli in particular.

“What overshadows WW2 is the Vietnam era,” Ron continued.

“People of today have never known the fear of their homeland being invaded as in 1942. Many of them were not born before the end of WW2.”

Consequently RSL is run by mainly by Vietnam veterans .

“That’s how the thing tends to be overlooked, if you want to say that. (And) it doesn’t get the significance that it should as well as WW1 as (that war) was so defining for our country.

“We’re now trying to encourage more of the young vets to come in, but job situations are different these days, and it’s tougher with partners, kids, work, schools and so much more to consider.

“But that’s the future, not us; we’re going to fade away.

“Even the Vietnam vets are passing on.

“We’re down to six WW2ers. Most are in their nineties now.

“It’s amazing what they went through in WW2 to come back and live to be nearly 100.”

ANZAC Day marches are going ahead this year, Ron Sutton says.

“Yes, there will be a march in Cooroy as usual, in the same location,” he said.

“The dawn service will be on as usual at the Cenotaph at 4.30am; that usually attracts a fairly big crowd.”

Ron said the Light up the Dawn alternative event last year “was a terrific success”.

“We were at Rainbow Beach: the whole street lit up. It was a fantastic effort by the community.

“We don’t have to do that this year, but I dare say a lot of people will.”

Ron said the rules due to Covid were so much more complicated thus making a lot more work for the RSL Sub-branch committee.

Ron said that he does not hold any committee position due to health issues, so he will be a passenger in a jeep for this years march.

“But it’s good to see we have good people who have stood up and taken the job on.” Ron said.

Anzac Day On the 17th April 1922, Senator Sir William Glasgow unveiled the Cooroy War Memorial in Diamond Street. The memorial which features a full size soldier standing with head bowed and arms reversed, was originally erected by the citizens of Cooroy to honour those who sacrificed their lives in WW1.

On the memorial there are 2 lists of names. One list for WW1 and one for WW2. These are the names of the fallen. These names are honoured every Anzac Day with a roll call… only a surname and an initial or 2…Who were they? Now we have a little more on our WW1 soldiers.

THIS March and April we are excited to announce two exhibitions, Tia Carrigan’s much anticipated solo show; ‘The Stories We Tell Ourselves’ and ‘Did U Know’ group exhibition about our South East Queensland Wildlife.

The two shows bring together artists whose work is known nationally and internationally with experience in a variety of genre and media including painters, potters, and sculptors.

The Foyer and Creamery exhibition space will be filled with artworks of our South East Queensland Wildlife, the big, the small, the vulnerable, the endangered and the extinct, as part of the ‘Did U Know’ exhibition. The exhibition throws light on how animals play an essential part in the ecology of everyday life. Alicia Sharples, Cooroy Butter Factory Gallery Coordinator says “the quality of the artwork anticipated to be on display is fantastic with a strong animal focus. The animal art in Did U Know, will also help bring conservation awareness to the wider community’.

Tia Carrigan’s exhibition ‘The Stories We Tell Ourselves’ will be on display in the Butterbox. Large artworks with vibrant birdlife and vivid colours will explore the theme of ‘the stories we tell ourselves’. Tia elaborates on the concept around inner dialogues as exploring the “…tales we convince ourselves that we belong to and myths that we embrace to stop us from being the best version of ourselves.” Her gorgeously bright imagery evokes a sense of passion and requires an emotional response, as the artworks beg the viewer to assess their own stories.

The two exhibitions open on Saturday March 27, tickets are free but booking is essential.

ART HUB SHOWCASING THREE NEW ARTISTS THE Art & Sculpture Gallery at The Art Hub Cooroy will be installing a new exhibition showcasing the amazing creative artworks of three new artists.

L I N DA E VA N S was born in East Java, Indonesia; Linda grew up surrounded by an artistic family of talented creative drawing and accomplished musicians.

Arriving in Noosa in 2003 Linda had nothing but rudimentary ideas about painting and drawing. She has always appreciated the visual arts, having visited the world’s greatest art galleries.

Following a back injury in 2010 which impeded her from participating in all her favourite leisure sports for three months; she followed her friends suggestion to take up painting. She started with water colour using books and then progressed to undertaking workshops with local established artists. Her works have been displayed in many of the coastal galleries and now will be exhibiting her works of art at The Art Hub Cooroy.

K E R R Y K E Y T E creates works of art in mixed media which gives her the ability to adapt and change her artwork inspired by the

light and ocean lifestyle on the Sunshine Coast.

Her art has a reflective quality using light to bring up the colour and intensity of her artwork. She mainly works with resin, mosaic, wood and fused glass upcycling her objects into works of art.

Most of her artwork, encompassing ocean themes or dramatic tones, is practical and can be used it’s not just ornamental art hung on the wall for display. She describes her artwork as evolving - always experimenting and looking for new ways to create and having fun.

ANDREW Farriss gets on board Mary Valley Rattler steam train to film new ‘outlaw’ video for his debut solo album INXS co-founder, Andrew Farriss, is using a rollicking video set on board the historic Mary Valley Rattler to promote the release of his debut solo album this Friday, 19 March.

Farriss had been exploring the idea of an outlaw-themed album release for over a decade, and a gig at the Gympie Muster inspired him to return to Mary valley to produce the video.

“We were thrilled that the Rattler was selected for the video, because the narrative epitomises the ‘romance of the rails’, which is at the heart of the Rattler experience.

“Andrew got the idea when he attended the Gympie Muster and thought the Rattler would perfectly fit the theme of the song.

“It was even better that he cast Gympie’s own country legend, Caitlyn Shadbolt, in the lead role. She was the star performer at the Rattler’s relaunch in 2018, and we really value both her singing talent and her support for the Rattler and the local region.

The boutique festival is being presented by Kin Music, run by songstress Katie Noonan, who calls Eumundi home and is passionate about inclusivity and all things community.

“We’re super happy to share that the festival programming is 100% QLD artists, 50% First Nations, 50% Sunshine Coast and 75% female artists,” says Katie.

Local music scene in slow recovery

THE Coronavirus pandemic made mincemeat of the Australian live music scene in the last 12 months, especially so for larger musical ensembles.

The local scene is still in recovery, but there are a few clubs and other venues starting to re-book and bring some colour and dancing back into their venues.

One local band, the five-piece Noosa Shire-based Claptomaniacs, which performs authentic covers of a range of transatlantic artists, has been picking up the pieces and delivering its tight sounds to the local scene. They will be playing Tewantin Noosa RSL on Friday April 9, from 7pm.

“It has not been an easy year,” guitarist and band founding member David Zuric said.

“As at March last year we had more than 25 gigs diarized for 2020 – but just after a gig at Alex Surf Club on March 13, the phone calls can celing the gigs started to roll in.”

In fact, the band didn’t play again until mid-July, when Tewantin RSL rang up to offer a two-sitting booking – with no dancing allowed.

“We played for two separate audiences, between 5 and 7pm, and 7 and 9pm, which turned out ok – they were both booked out,” Zuric said.

“The audiences wanted to get up and dance – we do play mostly dance music, after all – but the club simply could not allow it.

“So we decided to remain seated while we played, to help make the audience feel better.

“It was a good night in the end, and we congratulate Tewantin RSL for giving their audience something to celebrate after all those dry months of no entertainment, even though it would have cost them more than they earned from the event.”

The band returned to the club in January to another booked-out event and other work is coming in.

The Claptomaniacs also decided to return to their Eric Clapton-performing roots (that’s where the band name came from) and played a Clapton homage concert at Pomona’s Majestic Theatre on

March 6 - again a sellout.

“That was a fantastic show with such an enthusiastic audience,” Zuric said.

“It never ceases to amaze me how many Clapton fans there are out there.”

The April 9 gig will feature a few Clapton songs, but also a range of other covers from the likes of Joe Cocker, the Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan, Huey Lewis and the News, as well as a string of Rolling Stones numbers, among their classic list, which includes many past hits not played so often on ‘hits-n-memories’ radio these days.

This stiffness is frustrating for many people as it limits your ability to perform usual tasks, like turning your neck to check behind you while driving. There are many different causes of stiffness but let’s discuss a few of the most common reasons why you might not be feeling as flexible as normal.

A BALLET CLASS FOR E V E R YO N E WHEN Amy Dwyer took on the task of finding a new tap teacher for the popular tap dancing class in the Cooroy Memorial Hall, she didn’t quite expect it to be so difficult. Trying every studio on the coast, Amy eventually, through word of mouth, uncovered a little gem in Carol Murdoch.

Dancing since she was 5 and formally trained in England, Carol teaches ballet, jazz, tap and clogging.

With over 54 students coming to the popular dance classes in the Cooroy Hall, Carol is now teaching 3 classes on Wednesday mornings. Adult ballet, beginner tap and mixed level tap dancing. No experience is necessary, any age is welcome.

With the oldest student at 90, a few in their 80’s and the youngest in their 20’s, Carol adapts the dance to suit individual needs.

She has created her own syllabus drawing on her training and experience in special

conditions and aging. Carol works on how the movements feel rather than technical precision. Of the ballet she says “I love teaching adults, they are so keen, it’s fun and such a joy teaching them week to week.”

With students coming from all over the coast, some as far west as Kilcoy, the ladies are welcome to come and go as they please or stay for all three classes if they wish.

THINK of how you felt the last time you met someone that had poor dental hygiene and bad breath – was your first thought that they didn’t take good care of their health? If you don’t brush and floss teeth daily, food particles can remain in your mouth, which promotes bacterial growth between teeth, around the gums, and on the tongue.

This causes bad breath and increases the risk of plaque formation on the teeth, leading to decay and other gum disease.

Dentists recommend brushing the teeth twice daily!

• Floss your teeth before brushing – allowing loosening of any particles.

• Brushing Your Teeth concentrating on every section of your mouth; don’t forget your gums and tongue!

• After brushing, it is important to use a good quality mouthwash for extra fluoride protection.

• Keeping your toothbrush safe from germs and working to its full potential.

• After brushing, rinse your toothbrush under running water.

• Store your toothbrush in a clean dry place.

• Do not share a toothbrush, as this can spread germs.

• Replace your toothbrush often (usually every 3 months).

H OW D O I S A F E LY W H I T E N MY TEETH?

This is such a common request in the pharmacy and also it is important that you consult our pharmacists if you are at all unsure, as not everyone’s teeth are suitable for whitening. If your teeth and gums are not in healthy condition before whitening, the procedure may even cause more damage. Even if there appears to be nothing wrong with your teeth there may be other reasons why whitening may not work or be suitable.

If we find there aren’t any appropriate whitening kits for you in the pharmacy, remember artificial whitening is not the only option for maintaining white teeth.

For healthier and better looking teeth in general you should: • Brush the teeth twice a day for 2 minutes using a fluoride toothpaste.

• Floss your teeth daily.

• Chew sugar free gum after meals.

• Drink water throughout the day.

• Consume a sensible diet.

• Visit your dentist regularly.

• Avoid foods and drinks which may stain the teeth; e.g. herbal/black tea, coffee, red wine, spicy foods like curries, and cigarettes.

The definition for nutritionist is a person who studies or is an expert in nutrition.

Many people have the preconception that a nutritionist is only needed if you are overweight or have a disease related to food, like diabetes. This could not be further from the truth. A nutritionist is specialised in helping you wade through all the miss-information that constantly bombards us about fad-diets, fasting, macros and micros, the confusing notions of what foods are healthy or unhealthy, how we get our nutrients, and much, much more. A fully qualified nutritionist will have studied full time for three years so is able to give you the best advice possible on how to eat the right foods, as well as choosing the correct amounts to eat, based

on your energy needs for your age and gender. Nutritionists can set up food plans, menu’s, recipes and even shopping lists, to help ease the stress of those wanting to make life long changes and live the best life they can.

Nutritionists strive to support individuals on a personal level, as the needs of any one person are truly unique and important.

Having a good relationship with food is an integral part of a happy long life, but sadly studies show that up to 50% of the population has unhealthy view of food and body image. In reality the statistics are much higher.

Food should be fun and enjoyable. Food is not evil. We all need to learn to love our food and appreciate the benefits we get from our food. Variety is the key, you don’t need to live on lentils and kale to be healthy, just ask a nutritionist, you might be surprised by what they have to say.

Health - reducing screen fatigue OVER the last few years the amount of screen time for almost all of us has greatly increased. For the first time in history we are on computers, on our smartphones and under Led lights the majority of our day. This is leading to possible fatigue, sleep loss and low immunity. So how do we listen to the natural signals our bodies are giving us and still live in the modern world? Over the next three issues we will explore a number of techniques to help ourselves stay healthy and connected.

The first consideration is bluelight toxicity and redlight deficiency.

The sun has a vast spectrum of light that our bodies have been designed to utilise.

Blue and Red light are a major component of this spectrum and they both in natural doses are important to our health.

During the middle of the day, the blue light in sunlight ignites our attention, brain function, energy levels, reaction times, and mood. It’s the signal to our brains that we should be awake and active.

The problem is that computers, Led lights and smartphones also produce large amounts of blue light so we are being flooded with blue light constantly and our natural rhythms are being superseded.

W H AT I S R E D L I G H T A N D H OW I S I T B E N E F I C I A L?

Red light, strongest at sunrise and sunset, helps to increase the secretion of melatonin which leads to better sleep at night. Red light is being shown to greatly boost our immune capacity and mitochondria function (the batteries of our body). It is proving to be important in our eye health.

According to a study published in Journals of Gerontology looking into red light (morning sunlight) for 3 minutes each day may significantly improve declining eyesight.

Most of us are not getting this important light spectrum because we aren’t going outside at these times and when we are we are wearing sunglasses. Glass, even in the form of windows, filters out redlight.

So what does this all mean? We are getting vast amounts of blue light and very little to no red light and our bodies are being placed into overdrive, low immunity and fatigue.

Last October the disability charity launched the first instalment of their ‘Sustainable Community Workshops’ at their 5-acre facility, ‘Our Backyard’.

Noosa Seed Library Starting ‘from the ground up’ the Noosa Seed Library provides seeds to members of Noosa Library Service to borrow, plant, grow, harvest and return.

While enjoying produce from the plants, members are also encouraged to complete the cycle by harvesting seeds from their plants to return to the library for others to borrow. Seeds will be accessible at all library branches.

The Noosa Seed Library aims to ignite community interest in gardening and empower members to grow their own food and contribute to community building by saving and donating seeds back to the seed library. This will, in turn, contribute to both the preservation of seeds for future generations and the development of locally relevant and resilient seed stocks.

The seed packets will be beautiful works of art with designs commissioned from local artists with the help of the Butter Factory Arts Centre.

The community will also benefit as these technologies also mitigate the impacts of global warming by reducing the use of natural resources and reducing emissions from fossil fuels, the key driver of human induced climate change.

Mt Cooroora Mount Cooroora is located on Mountain St, Pomona, Tuchekoi National Park.

The peak is a 439 metre high. There is a lovely sheltered picnic area with drinking water but no toilets. Later in the afternoon the local kangaroos come out for dinner.

Best time to climb Mount Cooroora is early mornings and late afternoon. It can take between one to three hours to climb, giving you 20 minutes to half an hour rest at the top. This very much depends on your fitness level. I would only recommend children go that can follow instructions as it is a very steep slippery and rocky ascent and descent. The track in is manageable for all ages to the first lookout. I feel completely safe going alone. For those into geocaching there are two located at the base of the mountain.

If you are lucky you might see the Koala that hangs out there, also goannas, frizzy lizards, various bird life, snakes and depending on what time you go possums and echidnas. Spring time comes alive with native flowers. But this is a National park so no dogs.

Once you reach the summit the views are amazing. Looking out over Lake Cootharaba and Noosa, and west to Kandanga and Imbil. I highly recommended more experienced climbers do a full moon climb. Sunset is absolutely beautiful but you will need a head lamp on the way down.

I absolutely love this mountain it’s where I can take my time and meditate at the summit or push myself with my fitness. I give it a 9/10.

Always remember to wear a hat, take plenty of water, a snack and sunscreen in your back pack.

Fedamogah THE Fedamogah roadside stall was created with the help of the local Skyring Creek Road kids. Located at 107 Skyring Creek Road, Federal, two doors up from the Federal Memorial Hall, the roadside stall is accessible to the public every day during daylight hours.

At the beginning, it was originally just a pop up stall, a way to share excess produce and plants from my garden. I established my garden as a therapy after a long year of batting breast cancer. Following chemo and a bilateral mastectomy, the garden became a project of passion. It became a place to heal. With the amount of produce I was growing, it was soon apparent I needed to share it or it would go to waste. The excess was advertised on a Facebook Group (Federal Food and Plant Buy, Swap and Sell) then a few other people in the community found they’re often in the same boat and have enough produce to share, so with that in mind, we decided to make a swap box.

The community come from all surrounds of the Noosa and Gympie hinterland, bringing fruit and vegetables, plants and fertiliser. There have been jars for preserving,

honey, eggs and we’ve been lucky enough to have a regular lady bringing worm tea fertiliser. At the stall there is a seed swapping board too, which is a great way to build your garden collection from locally grown and acclimatised seeds.

The community who join in are genuinely appreciative and I appreciate everyone for making this project successful.

Some days there’s more in the stall others, but I try to post a photo or video on the Fedamogah plant stall Facebook page to update the community on produce availability. Friday, Saturday and Sunday are the most popular days for produce swapping.

People can also advertise and ask on the Facebook page what they have and/or would like. People also use the stall as a drop and collection point.

I hope to see the little community project go further with time. We already have about 15 regular visitors, coming once or twice a week, and all our other visitors and contributors have visited, leaving lots of letters and notes of praise for the project.

I spend usually only 5-10 minutes a day, just tidying up or composing videos and updates for the stall. Other than that, it’s entirely run by the Fedamogah community.

The small amount of profit from the seed sales helps cover my gardening costs. I hope to be able to grow and share lots more in the future from our garden.

Having a connection with like-minded people in the community who genuinely enjoy gardening and sharing is so rewarding in itself.

After a cancer diagnosis, your life changes and you see more clarity in the simple things.

Sharing healthy food with people and creating a community bond is the best rehabilitation and therapy I could have asked for.

Autumn plant sale at Botanic Gardens THE Friends of Noosa Botanic Gardens have had a busy few weeks propagating a range of indoor and outdoor plants now just waiting to beautify your homes.

And on Saturday, April 24 from 7am, you’ll get your chance to pick up and enjoy some of the loveliest and best cared-for plants in the shire.

Yes, it’s the great Noosa Botanic Gardens Friends Plant Sale happening again, with something for everyone to enjoy and brighten their home and garden.

FNBG member Jane Darling said foliage plants like alocasias, philodendrons, and caladiums will be on sale.

“And we’re having a sale on items such as bromeliads, ferns and cordylines,” Jane said.

“We also have succulents, some Australian native plants as well as beehive ginger, heliconias and bat plants, all of which are flowering now in the gardens and look spectacular on show.”

She said indoor plant interest had taken off

since television’s Gardening Australia added a new segment featuring Instagram-infamous plant collector Craig Miller-Randle.

The big sale starts at 7am continuing through to 11am, and there is no longer a need to make an appointment – just turn up – but social distancing still applies.

As a special bonus, the Noosa Botanic Shade Garden will also be open from 9am to noon, and with the rest of the beautiful Botanic Gardens right on the doorstep, why not bring a picnic and make a day of it? A coffee van will also be operating.

You can also visit the Shade Garden on Sunday April 4 on its regular first-Sundayof-the-month opening from 9am to midday.

P I C K L E D C U CA M E LO N S R EC I P E Cucamelons (aka Mexican sour gherkins) is the cutest produce in my garden right now – they look like tiny watermelons fit for Barbie. In fact, they are tiny cucumbers with a slight tangy taste – perfect for pickling if you find you have way too many to eat fresh in your summer salad bowls.

Cucamelons require similar growing conditions to regular cucumbers. Choose a sunny position, with well-drained soil and provide them with a trellis for support. Seed can either be directly sown into the soil or started in a nursery. The seeds germinate and sprout in 7 to 14 days and reach maturity in 60 to 70 days.

The recipe is super simple even adaptable to whatever hint of spice you like, and they will last up to 12 months in your pantry using the water bath method, or up to 2 months opened in your fridge – if they last that long. I do recommend making this recipe and letting them sit unopened for at least 6 weeks to really get that pickled flavour infused throughout (the longer the better).

Make more than you’ll consume and gift to friends. Chances are they’ll have never seen them before because you don’t find them in grocery stores.

The following recipe will make enough for 1 pint jar (600ml). Increase the recipe to suit your volume of fruit.

INGREDIENTS

D I R E CT I O N S

• 1 1/2 cups cucamelons, leave whole or cut in half • 1 teaspoon dill seeds • ½ teaspoon celery seeds • ¾ cup cider vinegar • ⅓ cup water • 1 tablespoon sugar • 1 teaspoon salt

• In a clean pint canning jar combine cucamelons, dill seeds, and celery seeds.

• In a small saucepan combine vinegar, 1/3 cup water, the sugar, and 1 teaspoon salt. Bring to boiling, stirring to dissolve sugar. Pour over cucamelon mixture, leaving 1/4-inch (6mm) headspace. Seal.

Let cool. Chill at least 24 hours and up to 2 weeks. Makes 6 servings.

After a last-minute relocation to Victory College Equestrian Centre (to take advantage of the undercover arena) the event kicked off early Saturday morning. THE Eumundi District Swimming Club, based at the Eumundi Aquatic Centre is a small but high performing swimming club.

The Covid lockdown last year forced the cancellation of State and National level swimming competitions. Whilst very disappointing for everyone, recent months of tireless training and regaining fitness has culminated in two major competitions - the QLD State Long Course Championships and the QLD Sprint Championships.

Eight swimmers qualified and four of these swimmers achieved top 20 finishes.

Mitchell W, the clubs most senior swimmer at 16 years of age achieved a silver medal in the 50m backstroke.

Three of the clubs swimmers Mitchell W, Jake W and Xavier G have also qualified for the Australian Age Swimming Championships to be held on the Gold Coast next month.

The club is a fun environment for all the family and welcomes both recreational and competitive swimmers.

Extraordinary battle IT was an extraordinary battle in the 7th Division Sunshine Coast Cricket Association grand final, featuring local team Cooroy-Eumundi Cougars and Yandina. Sent into bat, Cooroy were in trouble at 3/27 before Dean Christensen (62) and Brett Evans (22) steadied the team taking them to 78. Wickets continued to fall regularly until the team was dismissed for a competitive 149 runs.

Things were looking good when Troy Evans took a wicket in the first over, but Yandina settled in. Cooroy maintained a positive attitude and continued to take wickets, finally finishing day 1 with Yandina on 5/63. Day 2 began with an outstanding 82 run sixth wicket partnership taking Yandina to 6/145. Cooroy threw everything at them and with fine bowling and were rewarded by taking the final 4 wickets for only 11 runs. Brett Evans snagged 4/22, with Glen Heatherington and Troy Evans tipping in with 2 wickets each. A special mention to wicketkeeper Michael Price

who took 3 catches and a stumping in the innings.

The Cougars headed back in to bat knowing what needed to be done. They slowly but surely increased their score, however wickets fell regularly enough to be of concern. At the end of Day 2, CooroyEumundi found themselves at 7/103, 96 runs in front with one day left to play.

Brett Evans top scored with 26 and Ben Christensen made a quick fire 21. With runs on the board, Cooroy headed home feeling excited about the following Saturday.

The following Saturday, both teams wanted to play but the weather intervened again, and unfortunately after all the effort, the rain took over and no play was possible. A first innings victory to Yandina was enough to secure the grand final win. So after an entire season of play, the Cooroy team fell 7 runs short of victory! An outstanding effort by the entire team and indeed the club.

THE first Noosa Hinterland Property Expo was recently held in Cooroy and while the weather was not favourable the sentiment from those who attended certainly was. So much so that the founder of the event has decided to make it an annual event.

“We always felt this event would be popular and we were really pleased the overwhelming response from attendees, sponsors and exhibitors on the weekend was very positive. Attendees came from across the Coast and Brisbane, demonstrating the strong interest people have in our Noosa Hinterland region, our sustainable lifestyle and acreage living in general. The thirst for related information, resources and advice from experts was clear and many expressed that having everyone under the one roof was convenient and a fun day out,” said Sirah Robb, founder of the Noosa Hinterland Property Expo, and Principal of Wythes Real Estate who were the primary event sponsor.

“As the first expo, there were many successes and we have also been able to identify opportunities to make a second event even bigger and better! So, we are now planning for a 2022 event and are looking at hosting it in the middle of the year when it is a bit cooler, drier and hopefully fewer Covid-19 restrictions will apply.”

The expo style showcase included over 20 local businesses including everything from sustainable housing to soft furnishings. There was also a great line

up of guest speakers, fun activities and celebrity appearances by co-host of The Block, Shelley Craft and Sea FM’s BarRat & Heidi.

At each session throughout the day there was a progressive charity auction of 14 items which was not only a lot of fun with antics onstage from Shelley Craft and MC Richard Hansen but also raised $3130 for Drought Angels.

Other highlights of the Expo included two days of presentations from experts; a Living off the Land Exhibit; and a host of free activities for the whole family including succulent planting, macramé keyring making, face painting and a photo booth! All attendees also went in the draw to win the lucky door prize - two nights at Kingfisher Bay Resort, which was won by Beau from Wurtulla.

The event couldn’t have happened without the support from sponsors including Wythes Real Estate as the Primary Event Sponsor and Noosa Council through the grants program.
