INDWARD IS THE east facing, third installment, of the Harbour Village trio in Olde Naples. This stunning cottage style residence with nautical themes pays homage to historic Florida homes. Realtor Chris Wells of Olde Naples Real Estate explains, “We refer to this as a ‘shotgun style’ home which was popular in a lot of southern states, Florida and Georgia in particular. The concept was a long narrow house with a centered front door and a centered back door which you could shoot a shotgun through and not hit the walls! However, this home is a shotgun style with a modern, open twist and luxury finishes. The trim package is replicated from the Palm Cottage, one of the original cottages in Olde Naples, so it has some historic components to it as well.

We put that same trim package in all of our homes.”

by Kristen Williams, this room is decorated with various blue tones and a perfect combination of geometric shapes and floral patterns. A patterned accent chair is emphasized by a leather ottoman which ties in the rustic wood tones of the bedside tables and picture frames. Wells notes how most guests feel when entering the room, “The ceiling height goes all the way to the tip of the house. It’s a real cathedral ceiling with shiplap. You feel like you’ve walked into a historic country chapel. Everyone who sees it is impressed.” With extra height available, designer Kristen Williams chose a wooden four poster bed to pair with the shelves at the foot of the bed and wooden coffee table in the sitting area. “All the colors are just tied together in this bedroom. Kristen likes to use lots of white and accents it with a little color so the walls don’t take away from the furnishings,” Wells notes.

The nautical game room is an exquisite entertaining space on the first floor. Wells emphasizes the home’s fluid entertaining spaces. “You can easily bounce from room to room as the party, or life, progresses. You can have more than one thing going on in this house at a time; one doesn’t distract the other.” This is a lovely room to sit in beside the pool where the Windoor slider can be opened to display the outside view. Shellstone flooring climbs the wall to create the grand, gas fireplace decorated with model sailboats. Each side of the fireplace is framed by matching hanging lights and shiplap on the walls which carries to the ceiling.

GREEN ( ISH ) THUMB A QUICK GUIDE TO CARING FOR HOUSEPLANTS

W

hile it can be difficult to garden outside in the Florida summer, thanks to the heat and humidity, now is the perfect time to bring a little greenery into your home. Plants add to the design of your space, they purify the air and filter environmental irritants, and can even assist you regulate the temperature inside your home. They also add a peaceful element as you incorporate nature into your indoor spaces. While many people find plant care daunting, it really isn’t that difficult to create a plant-friendly home.

As you begin selecting plants, choose the right options for your space. Small spaces would benefit from houseplants that thrive in smaller containers, while larger homes need a plant that matches the scale of the rooms. Think about pets and children as well, and choose plants that work with them too. Cacti are unique and add character, but might not be the best for a home with kids. Plants in a home with a pet should always be non-toxic and there are plenty of beautiful varieties available.

Next, pick the location for your plants. The areas of the home where you place your plants will dictate the kind of greenery you should purchase. Too much or too little sun can be harmful so take a look at the sunlight available before you fall in love with a particular plant variety. And remember sunlight changes throughout the day, so make sure you check in from time to time so you know how intense the light will be morning, noon, and night.

L I GHT Different plants need a varying amount of light throughout the day. For example, succulents and cacti need continuous, daily sunlight while plants with foliage need around eight hours of light per day.

Research the plants you like online or ask your local garden center about light needs before you purchase your houseplants. Light is typically a little lower inside, so Philodendron, Pothos, Dracaena, or Peace Lilies are great choices.

WATER When watering a plant inside, try to water from the bottom. You will be less prone to overwatering and there is no concern of draining nutrients out of the soil. You will also be sure the water actually gets to the roots. One way to do this is to soak them in the sink or bathtub. There are also convenient self-watering pots available. Just refill the water reservoir and your plants can be watered for up to two months.

F OOD Fertilizers come in several varieties but the two best suited for indoor use are usually liquid and slow-release fertilizers. Liquid fertilizers are added directly into the water which evenly distributes the nutrients.

Slow-release fertilizers are coated in time-release shells that leach nutrients into the soil. A single application can last up to nine months, so this is a good choice for those who want less maintenance.

PO TS A good pot will help keep your plants healthy. Try to choose pots with drainage holes and a base plate.

Typically ceramic and plastic containers are the best for inside your home. Ceramic pots are porous, so your plants are less likely to experience root rot from overwatering.

Plastic pots are lighter and more durable, but plants will dry more slowly. The size of your pot is important as well—you don’t want to crowd your new additions. In order to avoid crowding the roots of the plant, make sure you repot in something that is one to three inches larger than the original container.

B E P R E PA R E D T H I S HURRICANE SEASON

t’s that time of year again... Hurricane season in Florida is once again upon us. For longtime residents and newcomers alike, preparing for hurricane season can be a daunting task. With experts predicting another active hurricane season, planning, early preparation, and an immediate response can make all the difference.

Here are a few key things to remember to ensure that you are ready and prepared.

BUILD AN EMERGENCY KIT

This should include enough food and water for seven days for each person in the home, a fully stocked first aid kit, communication devices including a battery-powered radio and phone chargers for mobile devices, sanitary and personal hygiene items, flashlights and

candles, important documents, medications, and anything you may need for your pets.

HOME MAINTENANCE

Set aside a couple of hours on the weekend to learn how to use and organize your storm shutters for various weather events. It is recommended that you label your storm shutters so that you are not rushing to fit each shutter to the corresponding window when a hurricane is on its way.

Call your local tree trimming service or lawn maintenance company and ask them to clear any low hanging or dead tree branches and prune trees, especially coconut palms, with pieces that may become a projectile in high winds.

Bring in any outdoor furniture, garbage cans, or decorations that are not tied down and secure.

If necessary, secure or remove large items such as potted plants or grills. Clear rain spouts and gutters of any debris to ensure water can flow smoothly away from the home.

If you have one, make sure to test your generator and ensure it is working properly. Generators should always be in an open and well-ventilated area so place yours accordingly.

KNOW YOUR EVACUATION ZONE AND ESTABLISH YOUR ROUTE

In the event of a major storm, it is important to know when it is necessary to evacuate. Knowing your evacuation zone before a hurricane hits is crucial. If you’re unsure of your evacuation zone, you can find a list on your county’s government website. Identify your nearest evacuation centers

Close interior doors, blinds, and curtains and move to an interior room or hallway on the lowest level of your home.

REVIEW YOUR INSURANCE COVERAGE

and shelters, confirm when they will open, and determine whether they accept pets. This year may present special circumstances due to our ongoing concerns with COVID-19.

Reach out to friends or family who live outside the forecasted impact zone as an alternative to an evacuation center. Record and keep the contact information of all who are willing to let you evacuate to their homes. In case your family gets separated during an evacuation, designate a main location and backup location to meet after the storm. When evacuating, be sure to remain calm. Orders are usually given in plenty of time before danger strikes so that evacuation centers can be opened. Listen to orders more than once to ensure understanding of evacuation locations and print out driving directions in case phone service becomes unavailable. Before evacuating, turn off your home’s water supply at the main valve, unplug all appliances, and deactivate electricity in the breaker box.

SHELTERING IN PLACE

If you decide to stay put and ride out the storm, be sure to check your supplies and bring them into your safe room. Install your shutters if you have them, turn your refrigerator and freezer to the coldest setting and keep them closed as much as you can in the event of a power outage.

For sanitation purposes, fill bathtubs and large containers with water. If you have a generator, fill any empty gas containers, and secure them safely.

Top off your own gas tank in case of a shortage after the storm. Charge all cell phones and other devices you may want to use if a power outage occurs.

During the storm be sure to listen to the weather radio or local emergency news station for updates and information on the progress of the storm. Use mobile devices only for emergencies and consider powering them off to conserve power. Stay indoors at all times and away from windows and glass doors.

It is very important to understand what is and is not covered by your homeowners insurance policy.

Taking a moment to review your policy is a vital step in preparing your home for the storm season.

This also enables you to have confidence that you and your home are properly insured in the event of a major storm. If your home is severely damaged or destroyed during a hurricane, it is important that you know what your policy limit is to recover the costs needed to rebuild. Remember the real estate value of your home is not the same as the cost to rebuild, and this should be evaluated with your agent. It is also important to note that your policy has a separate hurricane deductible that may result in higher than normal out-of-pocket expenses to you as the homeowner. Hurricane deductibles can range anywhere from $500 up to 10% of the insured value of the structure of your home. Be sure to save your insurance carrier information and claim phone number in your phone for easy access.

Flood insurance coverage is a must in a hurricane-prone state like Florida and is intended to cover the physical damage to your home that is directly caused by floodwater. These losses are not typically covered under your regular homeowners policy and it must be added to ensure complete protection in the case of a hurricane. A flood insurance policy can provide coverage up to $250,000 for the structure of your home and up to $100,000 on your personal property. These policies come with very affordable rates that are regulated by the federal government. It is important to note that most flood policies do carry a 30-day wait so the best time to take out a policy is prior to hurricane season; however, it is available to purchase at any time. For coverage above federally regulated limits, speak to your agent about an excess flood policy.

Lastly, ensure that you have coverage for additional living expenses. Additional living expenses coverage will pay for reasonable additional living expenses in case a major storm makes your home unfit to live in and you must relocate while your home is being repaired. These expenses are generally about 10% to 20% of the insured value of the structure of your home, but most insurers offer higher coverage limit options as well.

decisions will be determined by that function. For example, if the primary purpose of the kitchen is for baking, then invest in some decorative glass jars to organize the flour, sugar, and other baking components. However, if the family enjoys playing games around the kitchen table, perhaps some benches with built in storage for board games would be a better option. Always let function determine organization.

In personal spaces like closets, the function is easy to determine, however, the sentimental value of items often makes these spaces more time consuming to declutter and organize. Ask logical questions to simplify the elimination process: Is this out of style? Is this stained? When was the last time this was worn? Is this fit or fabric uncomfortable? When only what is worn and regularly used remains, the real organization begins! Closet built-ins are a great way to introduce some order to a wardrobe. Choose something with cubbies for shoes and ample shelves for folded items. For added aesthetic appeal, both crates and baskets can bring a unified look to shelves while keeping smaller items or folded shirts organized by category.

Categorical organization is key; always keep like things together!

This method of organization is especially important for utility spaces.

In areas like the laundry room, garage, or linen closet it’s necessary for everything to have a designated place. Because these rooms are frequently used but rarely seen by guests they are often ignored entirely. When there is order to these spaces they can be used to their full potential.

When organizing the pantry, look for items such as pantry crates to easily store like things together. Invest in a label maker to clearly mark containers, or even the shelves, where specific goods should be stored. To avoid a mishmash of containers of various shapes and sizes, consider transferring some items from their original boxes, bags, etc., into transparent containers which can be easily stored and stacked to maximize space.

Maximizing storage in small spaces, such as a laundry room, can be especially challenging. To maintain some order amongst the madness, aim to incorporate functional pieces into the space. Determine what will make the space more effective. Elements specific to laundry, like a drying rack

and folding table, can seamlessly blend into the space while unconventional pieces, like an unused bookshelf with a coat of fresh paint, can offer extra storage that works for any budget. Adding some decorative flair to a space can also help encourage organization! Painting an accent wall and installing some cabinets to hide detergents and other items will make the space feel more inviting and less utilitarian.

Perhaps the most “commercial” space in every home is the garage. They’re often a mismatched collection of all things maintenance and outdoor entertainment. Because of this, it’s best to divide your garage into zones: tools, sports, etc. Make use of the wall space! Installing some bike racks and hooks for tools will help clear the floor so one may navigate the space freely.

When organizing your home, it’s important to take it step by step. Don’t make it a whirlwind project, but instead address each space individually.

MODEL OF PERFECTION A Family-Friendly Home in North Naples

OCATED IN THE HEART of North Naples, this home found in Sereno Grove offers familyfriendly living close to the wonderful shops and restaurants residents have come to expect. The home’s location in this new, and already sold out, gated community means it’s one of only a few estate-sized homes situated in this enclave inside the popular Tiburón Golf Course.

Originally, this home was built to be a model, and Diana Hall of Diana Hall Design took on the task of creating a home that appealed to potential buyers, showcasing the wonderful lifestyle Naples has to offer. “Model homes are unique in that the client is potentially everyone,” says Hall. “As a designer, it’s my job to capture the feel of the community in the home’s interior design, as well as create a look that will catch the attention of the person most likely

attracted to that specific community.” Sereno Grove tends to be made up of full time residents which usually means more young families, so Hall wanted to highlight the familyfriendly features in this two story, four bedroom home.

“Because there is a living room, family room, and bonus room, there are a lot of seating options here. That’s a great thing for a family, especially one that likes to entertain, so I wanted to create options covered in easy-to-clean Krypton fabrics for washability,” Hall explains. She also decided to create a more casual interior with an urban feel through contemporary lines and materials. Using teals, creams, and greens, Hall’s vision of relaxed sophistication comes to life in the main living areas and master bedroom. Hall says, “the whole space is warm, welcoming, and is a wonderful zen retreat that lets you take a breath after a long day.”

Delightful Dining

In the dining room, a clever solution to a space challenge was achieved by using a thick, floating shelf as a buffet.

Hall explains, “The width of the room wouldn’t allow for a traditional buffet, but there needed to be some kind of storage or serving option. This floating shelf is modern, functional, and decorative while not overpowering the slim space.” The buffet also creates a feature wall as applied molding and a greige-toned wall covering define the space. A mirror reflects the light from the fixture with a modern farmhouse feel. The dining table with beautiful wood grain details and linen-covered chairs with nailhead details are both from Universal.

Seating Sense

When a home has a family and a living room, Hall says setting up both spaces in a comfortable and functional way is important. “It can be challenging to create a living room that people will actually use. While the family room will always be a primary space, the living room should never be wasted square footage. I’ve found that using four comfortable chairs to create a chat area has been the best solution,” she explains. “I also like to put a well-proportioned table in the middle for drinks and game night activities so it works for families in all stages,” says Hall. Here, she used a round table with spoked details and marble top to create an activity space. In this living room, Hall used four off-white linen-covered chairs with nailhead details and added pop a of teal with Ryan Studio pillows and the abstract art. The whole room pulls from the colors found in the area rug Hall selected and offers a slightly different take on the blues used in the rest of the home. “As so often happens, I chose the rug first and then built the room front the ground up.” Here, the wood-look tile floor really shines and the space is finished with custom color blocked drapes.

Custom Comfort Hall decided on custom made built-ins to create architectural interest and storage space in the family room. Each shelf is painted and backed by grasscloth for an added natural element. “I balanced the organic wall covering with the more glamorous accessories like the metal coral or mother of pearl vase to create a visually interesting combination,” says Hall. Between the shelves, an extra long console from Sarreid Ltd. features a metal inlay and matching base.

Upstairs, a comfortable lounge area provides another space for family to gather for game or movie nights. “This is its own separate space, not just an area at the top of the stairs, so it really is a wonderful place away from the main living areas which enhances the family-focused appeal of this home,” says Hall. A bathroom, wet bar, and private balcony are the perfect additions to the room. A Rowe sofa with biscuit tufting provides comfortable and plentiful seating. The Theodore Alexander table with espressocolored wood mixes glass and metal to create a modern silhouette. pasta salad with mozzarella & tomatoes 2 cups fusilli or rotini pasta ⅓ cup extra-virgin olive oil 2 pints cherry or roma tomatoes ½ tsp. fine sea salt

Bring a large pot of salted water to boil and cook the pasta until al dente, according to package instructions. Drain the pasta and set it aside, allowing to cool completely.

Cut the tomatoes in half and slice the red onion up finely. Add to the pasta, along with the mozzarella. Add the vinegar, then taste and add additional

vinegar and/or salt, if it needs more flavor.

Garnish with basil. For best flavor, let the mixture rest for 20 minutes, so the pasta can absorb the flavors. Or, refrigerate it for future use.

This salad will keep well in the refrigerator for up to four days. Leftovers are great chilled or at room temperature.

2-3 scallions, chopped ½ cup sour cream or ranch dressing olive oil

1 avocado, diced

Rinse and pat dry chicken breasts.

Season with salt and pepper on both sides. Preheat a pan on medium/ high heat and add 2 tablespoons olive oil. Place the meat on the skillet and cover with a lid. Cook for about 5-7 minutes, then flip and cook for another 5-7 minutes. Make sure that the internal temperature reaches 165-170°F. Once cooked, let cool and chop up.

Chop lettuce, tomatoes, avocado, and if using cilantro, wash and prepare.

Put a large tortilla on a plate, layer with about ½ cup chopped lettuce, ¼ cup tomatoes, avocado, a tablespoon of sour cream or ranch, few slices of grilled chicken, sprinkle on scallions and top with cheese.

Wrap them like an envelope.

Repeat the same with the rest of the ingredients.

mixed berry granola parfaits For the parfait (single serving): 1/3 cup low-fat plain yogurt

1 tsp. extra-virgin raw coconut oil

1/3 cup mixed berries

1/2 cup old-fashioned oats

1 tbsp. maple syrup

1/4 cup sliced raw almonds

2-3 tbsp. homemade granola

1/4 cup raw sunflower seeds

For the Granola (1 cup yield):

Kosher salt

2 tbsp. maple syrup

To assemble the parfaits: Fill a small singleserving (6 ounce) container or jar with a scoop of granola then a third of the yogurt.

Top with half of the berries. Drizzle 1 teaspoon of maple syrup over the berries.

Repeat layering with the rest of the granola, yogurt, berries, and maple syrup.

Fort the granola: Heat an oven to 350°F. Heat the maple syrup with the coconut oil in a small skillet over medium-low heat, just

enough to melt the oil. While still warm, toss the maple syrup mixture together with the oats, almonds, sunflower seeds, and a pinch of salt in a medium bowl. Spray a baking sheet with the nonstick cooking spray.

Spread the granola on the baking sheet in a thin layer. Bake for 20 minutes, tossing the granola halfway through. Let cool to room temperature and store in an air-tight container in the refrigerator up to one month.

2 cups mixed salad greens

4 tsp. honey 1 tbsp. apple cider vinegar

10-12 strawberries, sliced

1 avocado, peeled, pitted and diced 1/2 cup chopped pecans 6 oz. feta cheese salt and pepper to taste

In a small bowl, whisk together the sugar, olive oil, honey, vinegar, and lemon juice. Set aside.

Place the mixed greens in a bowl, and top with sliced avocado and strawberries. Drizzle dressing over everything, then sprinkle with pecans and feta cheese. Season with salt and pepper if desired. Refrigerate for up to two hours before serving, or serve immediately.

no-bake cheesecake with blackberries 2 cups graham cracker crumbs 1/3 cup packed brown sugar 1 stick unsalted butter, melted 11/4 cups heavy cream 24 oz. full-fat cream cheese, softened to room temperature

1/2 cup granulated sugar 2 tbsp. confectioners’ sugar 1/4 cup sour cream, at room temperature 2 tsp. lemon juice 1 tsp. vanilla extract blackberries or berries of choice for garnish

For the crust: Stir together graham cracker crumbs, brown sugar, and melted butter. Pour into a 9 or 10 inch springform pan and pack the ingredients tightly. Freeze the crust for an hour.

For the cheesecake: Whip heavy cream into stiff peaks, about 4-5 minutes on medium-high.

Set aside. Beat the cream cheese and granulated sugar together on medium speed until perfectly smooth and creamy.

Add the confectioners’ sugar, sour cream, lemon juice, and vanilla extract to the cream cheese mixture and beat until smooth. Then fold the whipped cream in until combined.

Spread the filling into the frozen crust. Cover tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil and refrigerate for at least 8 hours.

Serve cheesecake with desired toppings like blackberries or raspberries. Cover and store leftover cheesecake in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

Pour fresh lime juice, tequila, cherry liqueur, and cherry juice into a cocktail shaker filled with ice and shake vigorously till chilled and combined. Add listed garnishes if desired, and for a spicy twist, add a few slices of jalapeño as you combine your ingredients.
