publisher’s note

S U M M E R I S A T I M E to slow down and relax with family and friends. We also want you to connect with other locals, their businesses, and your community. This issue we’ve changed the format a little. You will find profiles on our local experts which will show you a more personal side. Just like you, these people live in the Naples community and they want to know and work with fellow locals this summer. We hope you enjoy getting to know them better! We also wanted you to learn more about Naples, so we’ve put together an article on our city’s history. I personally learned quite a few things I didn’t know about the area as I consulted the Naples Historical Society and the Collier County Museums—two great resources if you’re interested in learning even more. Our town’s history is tied to the American spirit of expansion and exploration as visionaries blazed a new trail in what was one of the last frontiers in the United States. And when you realize the first settlers did everything without air conditioning, it gives you a new appreciation for how rugged and resourceful they were! After focusing on local businesses and our history, we also have a few cool and refreshing citrus recipes. Many people have an orange or lemon tree in their yard (and if you don’t, citrus is easy to find in any grocery store!) so hopefully these will inspire you to use Florida flavors throughout the summer.

High DRAMA By Ginny Cooper

H

erscoe Hajjar Architects was founded in 2003 as a partnership between Rob Herscoe and Michael Hajjar, although their affiliation began 10 years earlier, when Michael joined Erickson Herscoe Architects in Canton, Connecticut. With most of that firm’s work centered on high-end residences in the Florida market, the two moved to Naples and subsequently branched off to form their own firm. They originally designed the “Grand Santa Barbara” model, among others, for Sunwest Homes in 2016. Built in the Talis Park neighborhood of Corsica, the Grand Santa Barbara was a 3,950-square-foot coastal/contemporary design. The popular model caught the eye of a homeowner who asked the firm to expand on their design for his estate homesite in the Prato neighborhood. Adding 2,000 square feet to the original floor plan, the team incorporated barrel tile roofs, dark wood corbels, myriad arches, and other architectural features to effectively and dramatically change the style to “Tuscan Mediterranean.” Nowhere is this more evident than in the complex, soaring ceilings of this luxurious design, fashioned after the Old World estates and cathedrals of Greece and Italy. The client-focused pair of professionals are hands-on architects, providing a full range of services from concept to completion. Both family men, Herscoe and Hajjar are active members of the Naples business community.

old world meets new

Adapted from an original Herscoe Hajjar design, this 5,951-square-foot Talis Park home was expanded in all directions, evolving from a “California Mission” style home into a “Tuscan Mediterranean.” “The introduction of stone and wood on the exterior gives this home more of an Italian farm villa feel, not quite as formal as a classic Italian design,” explains Michael Hajjar. Elements from Old World Greek and Italian architecture feature prominently. Visitors are drawn through a gated archway into a private courtyard. A tower constructed of rubble stone signifies the front entry, which is tucked under a shed roof. The pavered driveway leads to side-loading garages, an attached double garage and a detached single car garage. The home is sited on its corner lot to take advantage of a natural buffer of mature landscaping and its golf course frontage offering idyllic views of gently undulating fairways and greens.

a place to gather

The stylish and symmetrical gathering room is part of an L-shaped space of grand proportions that includes the kitchen, a casual dining island, and a formal dining area. Wide plank hand-scraped hardwood flooring and creamy white walls unify the spaces while complementary ceiling treatments renders the living room distinct. Not fully pictured is a beamed, coffered, barrel ceiling. Stained wooden box beams create the coffers that are nestled between the arched beams spanning the space. The sliding glass doors do not pocket. Instead, they create a 10-foot wall-to-wall expanse of glass. “We wanted to maximize the amount of light into the space, explains Hajjar.

heart of the home

In the kitchen/dining area, the barrel ceiling is embedded in a flat soffit surrounding the room. Because the box beams are not supporting anything, the ceilings were pulled up two feet from the original model, now soaring to 13-and-a-half feet at the top of the curve. The dramatic height is emphasized by the use of drop-down chandeliers. Styled with candle-like tapers, the pair of circular iron fixtures lends Old World charm to a thoroughly modern kitchen. As this wing is positioned adjacent to the landscaped buffer, privacy is of little concern, so simple Roman shades at the multi-paned windows suffice. The corner window in the kitchen proper is left unadorned.

tranquil dwelling

A study in gray, the ground floor master bedroom presents a slightly different style as decorated, with its sculpted cornices and upholstered bed. Paneled walls rise to a very high “spring line, the point at which the ceiling shape begins to slope upward. From its four sides, the hipped ceiling ends in a rectangular flat tray, 18 feet above the spring line. The beams are painted a glossy white, a marked contrast to the ceiling color. Dangling pendant light fixtures at each of the windows draw the eye upward, as do the clerestory windows. Simple drapery panels flank the sliding glass doors opening to the pool deck. A circular stairway leads upward to a secondfloor sundeck and a second master suite.

center stage

The center hall presents a showcase of the home’s architectural design. Viewed as it is here, from the Gathering Room, the 10-foot wide hallway leads into the front entry foyer housed in the stone tower. A pair of wall sconces flanks the entry’s arched window. Morning light pours through the tower’s east-facing clerestory windows, bathing the 22-foot high space in a warm glow. A quartet of inlaid marble squares (three of them visible in this photo) marks each intersection of the hallway with another space. Groin vaults, formed when two barrel ceilings meet, define the intersections overhead. The oversized four-bulb iron lantern fixtures play up the vaults. At night, recessed lighting hidden behind the crown moulding at the base of each arch, on both sides, adding to the spectacular effect.

spa experience

Twelve-foot ceilings in the ground floor master bath allow plenty of wall space for the oversized custom dual vanity mirror treatments. Slender curved mirrors and two pairs of wall sconces are mounted into a background of hundreds of tiny mosaic tiles framed in white. The soothing gray wall color is edged with glossy white crown moulding above and wide baseboards below. The freestanding white oval tub tucked vertically into the window niche presents visual depth and optical relief from linear aspects of the bathroom.

masterful views

Originally planned as a bonus room suitable for a home office or game room, this space was expanded to create a new Owner’s Master Suite. The sliding glass doors open toward the corner. On the left is an open air sun deck, straight ahead is a covered lanai with a circular staircase leading to the pool below. The ceiling in this bedroom is a similar shape to that of the ground floor master bedroom, but the room is significantly longer at 34-by20-feet. Therefore, the beamed hipped ceiling is slightly lower, beginning at 12 feet high and peaking at 15 feet, where the tray begins. White marble floors and clean, modern furnishings give this suite a sleek sparkle.

elevated outdoors Outfitted with retractable screens and hurricane shutters, the lanai offers comfortable seating on one end and an outdoor kitchen (not visible) on the other. Its western exposure guarantees exceptional views as the sun sets behind the trees lining the lush green fairways. Double ceiling fans turn lazily from the coffered tongue-andgroove ceiling accented by stained wooden box beams. The unscreened pool with its trio of fire-and-water features at one end, and heated spa at the other fills out the back yard.

tuscan inspiration Through a bricked archway lies the home’s beautiful wine room. It is both unique and functional, bringing together the great architecture and design that makes this home such an amazing place to live. The fantastic details in the ceiling draw heavily from the Tuscan influences woven throughout the home. The octagonal shape of the room makes the vaulted brick and beam ceiling more dramatic. Cabinets painted in cool blue tones keep the space modern and transitional. Arched niches are finished with tile mosaics that complement the cabinets and dark wood in the space. Plenty of counter surfaces throughout the wine room make it a great place to entertain.

flooring favorites WHILE EVERYONE WANTS something unique and different in their home, classic colors and styles are popular for a reason. We offer an almost unlimited array of color and finish options but we find that people return again and again to these popular choices. It’s not hard to see why—the neutral finishes and beautiful grain make these floors perfect for the airy and transitional style that’s so prevalent in Naples. They are also an ideal choice for homes that have a coastal feel and we use them in many beach homes. Lighter wood floors with natural tones provide the perfect palette to build on and can be accented with a wide range of colors from your walls to your furniture.

14 | YOU R HOME M AGAZIN E

GI GI NELLA Standard Width 180mm (7.09”) & 220mm (8.66”) Wire Brushed Finish Giginella is a very natural finish that is whitewashed before oil is applied. Once the oil and stain dry, the whitewash is shaved off the plank by hand, leaving lines that are smooth. The shaved lines on the floor also create a texture that looks soft and natural with a smooth semi-custom edge. The finish on the Giginella also means it can lean both warm and cool in tone making it a versatile finish that people love to use in their Naples homes.

VI E NN A Standard Width 260mm (10.23”) Double Wire Brushed Finish Gray continues to be a popular color in the design community here in Naples and reflects the preference for softer neutrals for carpeting, tile, and décor items. We still see a demand for this beautiful color in our flooring and are able to offer a few options, the most popular of which is the Vienna finish. Adding a gray washed stain to a hardwood floor can help accentuate the floor’s natural beauty while perfectly complementing nearly any style.

ST. MORI TZ Standard Width 220mm (8.66”) Wire Brushed Finish The whitewashed finish of the St. Moritz works well in this region because of its muted look. Perfect for a beach house, each plank is wire brushed which opens the grain of the wood and provides an authentically weathered appearance. The whitewashing process brings out a variety of tones in the wood, especially the greys which is why this finish works well in a home either close to the beach or one that draws its design inspiration from the Gulf.

HOME OFFICE

WHETHER YOU ARE PAYING BILLS, PLANNING YOUR NEXT TRIP, OR RUNNING A LARGE CORPORATION, YOUR HOME OFFICE IS A SPACE THAT DESERVES ATTENTION AND THOUGHT. CREATING A PLACE THAT INSPIRES YOU AND IS DESIGNED TO HELP YOU STAY ON TASK IS IMPORTANT SO HERE ARE A FEW THINGS TO CONSIDER AS YOU DESIGN THE PERFECT HOME OFFICE.

office location Working from home comes with its distractions especially if you have a family, so choosing the right room for your office is important. A home with a dedicated den or office space is the best option, but if you are converting a room, pick the one farthest away from the kitchen or great room. If this is going to be your main office location it might be a good idea to invest in some heavier doors to block sound especially if you will be meeting clients at your home or spend time on the phone.

lighting options Natural light is an important part of a home office so choose a room with a window if

18 | YOU R HOM E M AGAZIN E

possible. The ideal space will also have some kind of plesant view. To reduce eye strain while working on a computer, you should look away from your computer once every 20 minutes and having a window will help you remember to take a break. If you are worried about glare, configure your desk so the back of the computer is facing the windows or add translucent shades or blinds to help without darkening your room. You can enhance natural light by adding a mirror and painting the walls a light color. Add an overhead light for general lighting and find a good desk lamp to provide shadow-free task lighting. If you don’t have a view, position your desk to face the door or place artwork or an inspiration board above your desk. Both will

give your eyes something to focus on when you take a break from the screen.

unsightly cords Office technology comes with a plethora of cords and makes your space look cluttered. When setting up a home office choose wireless technology when possible. This allows you to place items close to the outlets to hide power cords since you won’t be worried about connecting them to your computer. Use a wireless mouse to keep your desk space clear. You can also buy cord management systems that will allow you to run your cords along the wall with neutral colored tubing. Hide cords under your desk by simply zip tying them together and then attaching them to

the underside of your desk with a staple gun or with CommandTM hooks.

plan it out It’s important to create a furniture layout for your office before you buy your furniture. Knowing how you would like the space to flow will help you during the design process and will make the whole experience more enjoyable. Creating an optimal layout can be a little tricky so we are here to help. We can take measurements of your space and will work with you to design an overhead view of your potential layout based on your room size and office needs.

select a desk

Moda chairs from Global Furniture Group is a fashion-forward seating series designed by Sava Cvek that is perfect for a smaller home office. The polished aluminum frame can be customized with a mix of leg finishes to match your décor.

As we said in our previous article, we love standing desks as they create a healthier home office. (Visit www.yhmagazine.com or pick up a May issue to read our article on healthy desks and chairs.) Once you have measured your room you will have a better idea of what to look for. A desk that’s too large will make your office look small and limit the amount of space available for seating and storage. Next, choose your color theme and style. There are so many options, so we can help you select the right manufacturer and type based on the style you like. Mid-century modern and industrial-chic are two popular styles right now.

storage options An issue with home offices can be a lack of storage. Since these spaces often double as a homework room or a craft area, make sure you have closed storage options to hide the items that don’t add to your design theme. Secure storage to keep private documents safe is also a good idea. Most decent filing cabinets will come with a locking system but you might want to invest in a fireproof safe for the most important documents. When you are configuring your storage, consider your workflow. Place your inbox and current work within arm’s reach. Keep your filing system nearby and don’t forget about frequently used manuals, catalogs or reference books. Hang shelves near your desk so you can easily access important books or folders.

This credenza by Darran is a great example of stylish storage for a home office. With both open and closed shelving, this piece gives you versatile storage options while adding a designer touch to your home office.

dog days of

SUMMER Keeping your canine companion happy and healthy is a priority all year but it becomes even more important during the summer. While other states may worry about winter weather, we have a specific set of concerns with the heat. Here are some tips and products that will help you keep your pet safe, cool, and entertained all summer long. HYDRATION Offer multiple sources of fresh water throughout your home. Pets can be picky so giving them a few choices helps keep them hydrated. Frozen fruit like blueberries and strawberries are a healthy treat. The water content will help them stay hydrated and they are a great source of nutrients. Make sure you know the signs of dehydration and heat exhaustion. Drooling, excessive panting, sticky saliva, floppy skin that takes long to snap back after being pulled, fatigue, dizziness, and a high temperature are all signs your dog is in trouble.

HEAT PROTECTION Remember sidewalks and asphalt roads are extremely hot during the summer and contrary to some popular beliefs, dogs can burn their paw pads. Try to walk your dog in the grass during the hottest parts of the day or protect their paws. Paw wax and dog boots or socks are the best ways to protect their feet if you are in an area where you

can’t avoid the hot pavement. Try to take walks in the early mornings or in the evening and keep midday walks short. Dogs can’t sweat so they are susceptible to heatstroke just like humans. Brachycephalic breeds (dogs with shortened heads like Pugs, English Bulldogs, and Pekingese) overheat much quicker because of their reduced ability to take in air so keep a close eye on them when out during the hottest part of the day. Use cooling mats in your home to give your dog a place to recover after a walk or exercise. You can also find a cooling vest for your dog if you will be taking them with you on hikes.

SUMMER ACTIVITIES A kiddie pool is a fun way to keep your dog

cool. It’s also easy to drain so you can control how much pool time your pup gets in case you don’t want them getting wet every time you let them outside. If you plan to take your dog out for boating activities, it’s a good idea to get a life vest. Even the most prolific swimmer can tire out and need some help. Just make sure you don’t let your dog swim in ponds, lakes, or canals in Southwest Florida—there’s a good chance an alligator could be present. A beach visit is another great summer activity for your pooch. While Collier County doesn’t allow pets on the beach, there is a dedicated dog beach in Lee County and all of Fort Myers Beach is dog-friendly as well. It’s also less crowded than the beach off Estero Boulevard if your dog doesn’t love spending time with fellow canines.

CUSTOMIZE ANY CLOSET With so much attention given to the large master closet space, sometimes the smaller reach-in closets can be neglected. While smaller, these closets can serve an important storage function and with a little imagination and help, they can be just as useful as your walk-in closets.

BENEFITS OF LAYERING Most guest room and hall closets come with a standard rod and shelf design hung at 68 inches—the least efficient way to set up a closet. By creating hanging space in layers, you are able to double the amount of storage in your reach-in closet. This also gives you room to add different drawer sizes and shelves to create a more functional and versatile space.

UTILIZING THE ENTIRE CLOSET Because of the door design, reach-in closets have difficult-to-access areas in the spaces behind the doors—there really is a “back of the closet” with these

22 | YOU R HOM E M AGA Z IN E

spaces. That means you have to think about what you will be storing so your most frequently used items aren’t in the least accessible areas. These closets are great for storing extra pillows and bedding but you don’t want these items front and center cluttering up your hanging spaces. While walk-in closets allow you to tuck these items neatly away, we create shelving options for small closets so your can maximize these hidden areas.

MAXIMIZE VERTICAL SPACE You can also gain storage by making the most of the vertical space. We’ve found that most closet systems don’t give you enough room to easily access items on the top shelf as the space between the shelf and the top of the door means you literally have to wedge larger items onto the shelf. That makes it next to impossible to remove things once you’ve finally got that suitcase or storage bin up there! Inspired Closets has come up with a shelving system that’s angled to give you more space and to create easyto-access top shelves. We suggest that you install these systems in every reach-in closet to maximize the vertical space.

The Lineage II area rug, from the Stanton Palermo Collection, provides the perfect base layer to add a touch of intimacy to a living room straddling the line between a formal and inviting space.

quality matters There is a difference between a $200 and a $500 area rug which is usually seen in the thickness of the product. Also, whether wool, silk, flat woven, tufted, hooked, or synthetic fiber, and from hand-knotted to machine-made, the difference in fiber and manufacturer will affect durability. Ask advice from us—we are the experts!

caring for your rug Have your rug pretreated with stain guard. Vacuum regularly, but don’t use the beater bar attachment. Use a rug pad for extra cushioning or when you are using your area rug on a non-static surface (on other carpets, on tile with large grout lines).

helpful hint WHEN ADDING AN AREA RUG TO THE BEDROOM, ALLOW 18 OR 24 INCHES BEYOND THE SIZE OF YOUR BED. ALWAYS ERR ON THE SIDE OF A LARGER RUG AND REMEMBER THAT CUSTOM SIZES ARE AVAILABLE FROM MANUFACTURERS LIKE STANTON, COURISTAN AND ANTRIM.

Area Rug

TIPS FROM THE LOCAL EXPERT

styling your rug Determine not only the size of the room, but the furniture placement too. In general, allow 18 inches of exposed floor space around the perimeter of an area rug. Keep in mind that an undersized rug can make a room look small and and your furniture uncoordinated, so the overall size of the room should be considered. Here are three helpful tips to consider as you select your rug.

furniture placement If all furniture legs are off of the rug, pieces should all surround the edges. This is ideal when opting for a smaller rug. The most popular layout for living room furnishings is to have just the front legs on the outer edges of the rug. This arrangement will connect the furniture while creating a sense of proportion in the room. For a more polished look, put all of the legs of the couches and armchairs on the surface of an area rug.

FLOOR MEISTERS FLOORING I learned a couple of things growing up in Iowa: The flooring business (my father, Dave, was both a flooring distributor rep and owned his flooring store) and that I wasn’t a big fan of winter. Early on, I realized the value of warmth! I’ve been able to make use of all that industry knowledge by overseeing all operations at Floor Meisters, where myself and my expert team provide the finest in laminate, hardwood, carpet and vinyl flooring in a centrally-located Naples showroom, next to Costco.

In my “spare” time I make use of Naples’ wonderful weather by running triathlons and marathons (my best time is 26 miles at 3:57 hours). While time is limited, my family does feel it’s so important to pour into the community where we live and work. Myself and my kids (Dakota, 13, Toby, 10, Lianna, 6 and even little Isabella, 4) help my wife, Angie, who runs the non-profit Project Outreach with projects that include Relay for Life, Backpacks for Schools, Thanksgiving meals for shelters and an upcoming community Day of Service. While life here is busy I wouldn’t live anywhere else. The location, the people, the weather—it all adds up to a truly amazing community that we are proud to be a part of. If you’re new in town

or have lived here for 50 years, stop by Floor Meisters and and say hello. We are very nice and would love to meet you! —TJ Meister

Renovation in the Age of Reality TV LIKE MOST PEOPLE WHO LOVE home-related television, you’ve probably watched a renovation show or two. From flipping homes around the country to everyone’s favorite Texas couple taking the worst houses in the best neighborhoods and turning them into amazing family homes, there is a remodeling show for everyone. While fun and a little addictive, these shows have changed the world of renovation and remodeling. Spend a Saturday watching episode after episode and you may come away feeling like a bit of an expert ready to hire a company to tackle that kitchen renovation. However these shows, like all reality TV programs, aren’t showing you a realistic remodel or renovation. They have also altered the perception of the industry by creating unrealistic timelines and expectations. Here are a few things you should know so the ideas from your favorite show and the reality of a renovation don’t clash during your next project.

» ADJUST YOUR EXPECTATIONS

On TV, an elaborate project that should take weeks or months is often completed in less than 30 minutes. First, they make the design process seem like a quick meeting in which the clients sits down, loves everything they are presented with, and then everyone goes on their way happy, with no changes. In reality, that process takes time and multiple meetings and many decisions. Second, while a program will highlight a problem or two to help with the arch of the episode, you aren’t seeing the myriad of issues the contractor may have run into through the process. Also, the problems shown in the episode can be the easiest ones to solve so don’t assume you will have the same easy fix during your project. A savvy general contractor knows there is no substitute for careful planning and preparation. Ultimately, the goal is to complete your project in an efficient manner, costeffectively and above all, ethically, to save you unnecessary aggravation.

28 | YOU R HOME M AGA Z IN E

» REALIZE EVERYTHING TAKES LONGER THAN YOU THINK

If the timeline sounds too good to be true, it often is. One episode on the home and garden network of choice represents months of work so make sure you are working with a general contractor and company that creates a reasonable timeline based on the scale of your project. An honest contractor may not know the true timetable for completion until he/she sees what’s behind the walls during demolition. Too many people assume if it is on the “original” blueprints, the structure was built that way, but often that is not the case. Changes can be made during construction. You want a contractor who utilizes advanced technology, in conjunction with substantial construction knowledge, to be able to think outside the box or be able to reverse engineer a solution.

» LOOKING GOOD ISN’T GOOD ENOUGH

With every vendor acting as a sponsor on a TV show, the producers may be satisfied to just show off a product and not as concerned with the practical applications or if the home even needs the product. A good general contractor will always assess functionality, cost-effectiveness and longevity to determine the strongest value proposition for their clients.

» PRICE IS NO OBJECT ON TV

Cost is certainly important to you if you are paying for a renovation. Be wary of how your job is being priced. Don’t accept or expect a quick proposal. Expect your contractor to explain the pros and cons of a lump sum versus a cost plus approach. An honest company will spend considerable time to create a strong value proposition and use a combination of strategies to approach the project and a system to help you evaluate your priorities.

»

YOUR CONTRACTOR IS YOUR PARTNER, NOT YOUR EMPLOYEE I believe in having a consumer-centric focus. You are our partner and collectively we succeed at creating the strongest value proposition. Hire an advocate, someone who understands your situation: Are you planning on living in your renovated home for 20 more years? Or do you plan to flip it? (Discuss your ROI either way). Maybe you don’t need a renovation at all. Perhaps a remodeling will do instead. An honest company will point that out. Find someone you can talk with easily. You want a general contractor who possesses active listening skills, who both asks and answers questions thoroughly. Transparency is vital.

ARCS CONSTRUCTION CONSTRUCTION & REMODELING ARCS CONSTRUCTION IS A NEW GIG FOR YOU, RIGHT? Being handed the reins to manage ARCS Construction, alongside a reputable firm such as Gulfstream Homes, is an honor which I couldn’t pass up. The team behind this organization is special, being both extremely talented and exceptionally ethical. Their experience in the market, their commitment to always being on the cutting edge technologically, and their desire to create the best product possible were all very attractive to me. Taking on this responsibility was the right move for my family.

BUT ISN’T CONSTRUCTION YOUR “SECOND ACT”? I have built hundreds of homes in Southwest Florida with other builders, after serving my country for nine years. In 2002, I was named the Navy Pacific Fleet Electronics Technician of the Year. I later founded a nationally recognized consulting firm, where I patented the first neuroergonomic weapons technology in North America, (which I built in my garage).

HOW DID YOU GET TO NAPLES? I was serving as the Command Intelligence Special Projects Coordinator for Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, when I took leave in Miami and considered relocating to Florida. I drove across Alligator Alley and fell in love with Naples at first sight.

ANY OTHER PERSONAL BUILDING PROJECTS IN THE WORKS? In addition to my sons, 9-year-old Zachari and 17-month-old Preston, my wife Lindsay and I are thinking about constructing a third child. Fingers crossed. —Chris Ghannam

aples is known for cool color palettes inspired by the beautiful blue skies and the Gulf of Mexico. But for some people, these colors don’t excite them or make them feel at home. Instead, they want their home filled with warmer tones and richer hues. Whatever palette you choose, your home should be inspired by your own experiences. Interior design is about infusing your personality and tastes into a space to create something that reflects you and tells your story. A great way to do this is by drawing on your past travel experiences. Maybe the blue waters of the Mediterranean were particularly inspiring or you loved the orange of the Arizona desert. Adding items you’ve purchased on your travels is also a great way to personalize the space and allows you to sprinkle memories throughout your home. With this particular look, the family wanted to make their large home warm and accessible while bringing in reminders of their global excursions. They also wanted a space that reflected their own

tastes—they were decidedly against the normal greys and blues found in Naples design, and were looking for a warmer aesthetic. Their extensive travels served as inspiration as we chose to accent a creamy backdrop with paprika, jade, copper, and dark wood. This is also a family home with the owner’s children coming to visit often so they needed surfaces that were durable as well as beautiful. We selected Sunbrella® fabric for the sofa as well as vinyls that look like leather and linens with high polyester content to ensure their pieces would stay vibrant and look new for years. Textures like those in the woven seagrass area rug add natural elements to the space and continue the look of the globally-inspired room. We added a dark walnut accent wall above the built-in to bring in more of the warm wood tones the family prefers. It also complements the color of the beautiful wood floors and beams. Adding a dramatic light fixture with lots of movement, texture, and a international feel completed the living space.

Wallpaper is a great way to add a global vibe to a room. This granite linen textured paper with brass vertical studs is a versatile option that also works with many different design styles.

This Moroccan-inspired fixture with iron and brass welded wires with gold flakes is a great way to add international flair to a room.

Items like this jade and gold malachite box are the perfect way to add color. While traveling, look for unique design items that can be added to your decor so you can bring your adventures back with you.

A table with a forged iron base and textured stone top wrapped in studded iron is a great piece for a familyfriendly home.

These ottomans bring in warmth and add to the mixed metals in the home through their metallic copper and silver print with nailheads.

Over-sized abstract art with pops of bold color is a wonderful way to add a modern touch while accenting global fusion design.

Adding a chunky and textural woven seagrass rug brings in natural elements and is a nod to the rugs found in Asia and the South Pacific.

LMG Design Consulting is a design group in Naples, Florida with over twenty years of design experience. In a beachfront home, a multi-million dollar condo or a commercial space, color, texture, and authenticity are key. Combining vibrantndetails from multiple genres allows us to curate a personal perspective, vision and distinctive color palette for every project. The design seen here takes cues from Moroccan, Spanish, British and Dutch Colonial colors and patterns, mixed with contemporary shapes and textures for a sophisticated, modern aesthetic. In Florida, many properties favor sea glass blue and white linen; instead, we collaborate closely with our clients to bring a unique perspective to the sea of sameness, pulling design cues and color palettes from a wide variety of traditions, time periods, and aesthetics. Recent projects include work in both Rosemary Beach and Anna Maria Island in Florida, and an organic winery event space and tasting barn in the Midwest.

Our Hometown Narrative

a history of naples we often focus on the future of Naples but it’s nice to take a look back at where it all began. Southwest Florida is a newer area by the rest of the country’s historical standard, but we have a rich past worth exploring, full of interesting characters who helped shape the area and state. The story of Naples is one of ingenuity and vision as it intersects with America’s many railroad and highway projects. Naples began when Hamilton Disston acquired thousands of acres from the State of Florida as payment for a drainage project he developed for the Everglades. Part of the parcel he was given included the land that would become the City of Naples. Prior to Disston, early records show that Roger Gordon and Joe Wiggins used the area intermittently in the 1860s-70s. Although not much is know about their activities, historians believed they would have fished, hunted, and may have grown a variety of vegetables. After acquiring the land, Disston’s agent, Charles Adams, had the land south of Fort Myers surveyed in 1886. The survey suggested the land was good for truck gardening (raising vegetables for market) and tropical fruits, so Adams purchased 3,712 acres from Disston and then sold it to a group of Tallahassee businessmen who had recently founded the Naples Town Improvement Company. The future townsite was surveyed and lots were immediately offered to customers at the now astounding price of $10 each. By May of 1887, 252 lots had been sold. In 1887, the Naples Town Improvement Company was reorganized under a group of prominent Kentucky businessmen led by Civil War general and U.S. Senator, John S. Williams. Along with newspaperman Walter N. Haldeman, they formed the Naples

34 | YOU R HOM E M AGA Z IN E

Company and launched an ambitious town-building program based on tourism and future rail and sea commerce. By the summer of 1888, Naples consisted of a 600-foot pier, a general store, post office, hotel, and a seasonal population of about 80 people. A marketing campaign began in the 1870s and ’80s, and magazines and newspapers ran stories about the area’s mild climate, the large fish and game supplies, and compared it to the sunny Italian peninsula. The name “Naples” is thought to have originated with a Fort Myers land broker and surveyor. Like most Florida promoters of the day, he popularized area with exotic newspaper ads, describing the region as “surpassing the bay of Naples in grandeur of view and health-giving properties.” Despite a promising beginning, slowing land sales and mounting debts collapsed the Naples Company. For the next thirty years, Naples remained a private winter retreat for a few wealthy Kentucky and Ohio families. Years of isolation began to draw to a close in the late 1920s as roads and railroads made their way south through the Florida wilderness and finally reached Naples. Seaboard Air Line Railway’s first passenger train, The Orange Blossom Special, pulled into Naples on January 7, 1927. World War II introduced hundreds of servicemen to Naples when the U.S. Army Air Field was activated in December, 1943 to train pilots for combat. The airport was returned to the city and county after the war and was dedicated as the Naples America Airport in 1953. Much of Naples’ impressive growth and development happened after World War II. From a total of 390 in 1930, the city’s year-round population more than tripled by 1950, setting the stage for the town we know and love today.

an architectural history As you walk around historic Naples you will see a variety of architectural styles. Naples even has two homes designed by architect Addison Mizner whose work is primarily seen in Palm Beach and Boca Raton. Active throughout the 1920s, his Spanish and Mediterranean Revival buildings gave the east coast of Florida its distinctive look. Naples is one of the only places along the west coast to have homes designed by Mizner. The earliest buildings were simple frame cottages that fall into the category of vernacular architecture, a style based on local needs and the availability of construction materials. Construction relied on local materials and labor. Tabby, a type of concrete made by burning oyster shells to create lime, then mixing it with water, sand, ash and broken oyster shells, was a prominent building material. Oolitic limestone was quarried for chimneys and walls, and board and batten siding was common. These early buildings were slightly influenced by Queen Anne and Stick style architecture. One of the best examples of this style was the Haldeman House, now located in Bonita

38 | YOU R HOME M AGA Z IN E

Springs, which featured a single side plan with a steeply pitched roof, gables with turned spindlework, and verandas around the outside of the home for shade and cooling. Other homes in the area were inspired by the Colonial Revival style that combined various aspects of Adams, Federal, and Georgian into a home that was popularized by mail order plans. In Naples, these homes were usually three bay, two story structures with wood siding. The most popular home style in historic Naples is without a doubt the Bungalow. Bungalows were first built in India in the mid-nineteenth century by the British. Built low to the ground, large porches sheltered by wide overhanging eaves were the perfect way to deal with the country’s hot, sunny climate. This style translated well to the warmer climate of southern California, and then became the dominant style in the United States between 1905 and 1930. The large shady porches of the Bungalow were perfect for Naples’ hotter temperature and their smaller size made them an economical option that was easy to customize for families who predominantly used them as a winter retreat.

O

nce you have your lanai furnished, it’s time to accessorize the space. There are so many fantastic options to choose from—lamps or throw pillows, dishes or artwork—there is an accessory available in your preferred color and style that will help you complete your lanai. As with furniture, it is important that your accessories stand up to the heat and humidity of Southwest Florida. While these outdoor pieces might look like the ones you would find inside, manufacturers have utilized the latest technologies in their designs to ensure the items you purchase stay vibrant and mildew-free for years. It can be tempting to purchase a piece that’s not specifically designed for outside use but you run the risk of a quickly depreciating investment or, in the case of indoor lighting, creating a fire or health hazard. Pillows are a great way to accent your lanai. They add a splash of color and personality and can be changed out more regularly than furniture cushions to suit changing tastes and seasons. One of our favorite pillow designers is Elaine Smith. These durable yet stunning pillows come in a wide array of colors and patterns. Her runway-inspired designs feature 100% solution dyed acrylic fabrics to combat fading while incorporating luxurious trims and accents. Another creative way to complete your outdoor living space is to add unique lighting. Companies now make lamps with outdoor-grade plugs, cords, and elements so you can safely use decorative lamps outside. The lamp shades are made from durable outdoor fabrics that won’t fade in the sun and the bulbs are protected from the elements by waterproof enclosures. You will also find high-quality outdoor lamps have extra long cords since most lanais have limited outlets. Last but not least, spruce up your outdoor dining table with decorative dinnerware. Made from durable melamine and acrylic, these dishes and glasses are perfect for cookouts and pool parties. They can be left outside as a decorative table setting, dropped on your pavers without breaking, and are scratch-resistant for years of use. Make sure you choose a BPA-free material to avoid the health risks associated with certain plastics. With so many colors, patterns, and styles to choose from, people are even using these durable plates inside the home—they are perfectly suited for families with younger children or grandchildren.

A New Take on Cubism: Part Two BY MARLISSA GARDNER

I

La Connaissance, 59’’ by 78’’ by Alain Beraud

50 | YOU R HOME M AGA Z IN E

sat down with Alain Beraud, a contemporary Cubism revivalist, as he breaks down the now under-explored medium that transformed artistic expression in the early 20th century. Beraud is reverent towards the early masters and their work, observing that Cubism embodies a curious duality that is both abstract in its communication but literal in its construction. Beraud explains “There is, in Cubism, an almost mathematical approach to the ‘destructuring’ of things and perspectives. Everything is questioned and so everything is allowed. It is this very creative approach that interests me beyond the pure creative process. No more taboo, no more norms, no more barriers apart from those of the imagination.” I asked Alain, “Why Cubism?” What is it about this abstract and remarkable style that drew him in? He calls his new explorations in the form Neo-Cubism. “For me the Neo-Cubist appellation is the continuation of Cubism. Nearly a century later it seems to me important to restore its nobleness to this current milieu of painting. Cubism marked the history of contemporary painting and yet has not found many successors. Today, I wish to bring this intellectual dimension to Neo-Cubism.” In his early years, Beraud ventured into storytelling and artistic expression through the medium of motion pictures. “I had this immense chance to travel the world as a filmmaker for over 25 years. From my travels to the four corners of the world, I have reaped experiences and symbols. Today these symbols I find in my paintings.” “Whether it is African or Arab or Latin influences, there are always traces of these journeys in my artistic work. All these encounters permeate my paintings. “Cubism allows total freedom of interpretation and it is what interests me, pushing back the barriers of creation and telling stories through my paintings.”

PROFILE

desire to make her creative mark on the world as she pursued a career in film and writing. Her realization that art extends beyond the classical definitions of master works in paint or sculpture and into the stuff of everyday life was developing even then. After college, ten years in the film industry, marriage, and children, Marlissa’s creative ambitions went on something of a detour as she explored different forms of artistic expression. Through those years, her love of fine art and her desire to translate art into the language of humanity never left her.

THE EPIPHANY

It’s likely a guarantee that you haven’t met a soul so surprising as Marlissa Gardner—few have. Suffice it to say, any woman who walks Vanderbilt Beach as a form of meditation, skydives, and has received a knighthood is deserving of an introduction. A mind for creativity and art was instilled in a young Marlissa. She vividly recalls her first tour of Europe at age twelve where she took in a plethora of seminal, historically significant artworks and architecture. These experiences would lay the foundation for a lifetime of seeking out art.

On a trip to engage her expertise in photography on Florida’s east coast, Marlissa stumbled upon a quaint town that seemed frozen in time. While exploring this amazing tribute to a midcentury utopia she discovered a perfectly curated gallery. Residing inside were example after example of exquisite, finely rendered art. From classical oil-on-canvas, to sculpture, to hand-crafted furniture and jewelry pieces from around the globe—Marlissa was transfixed. Her epiphany came when she spoke with the curator, “You have an absolutely perfect collection!” The man replied, “I consider myself to be extremely lucky. I get to travel, use my photography, collect incredible works, and bring them back for the world to enjoy.” Marlissa’s heart was suddenly opened to a new possibility. “This is exactly what I need to be doing—sharing art with the world.” Her own path of rich, developmental depth through her experiences; her desire to impart and distribute beauty through art to the world around her; her deep intuition for understanding the human condition and how experiential richness can heal the downtrodden; these all coalesced to form a vision for Marlissa’s own future.

diversify their portfolio through the acquisition of investment art, divesting and liquidating fine art assets, and representing both Master and Contemporary works and artists are just a few of the ways she brings her desire to be an art ambassador to fruition. Emillions recently moved to 5th Avenue where they enjoy the electric environment of appreciation for art and culture. “What I absolutely love about Naples is the genuine love of art that shown by its citizens. Naples has a special relationship with the arts where the people are always looking to improve the environment in an artistic fashion. We are so excited to be neighbors with so many who have common interests and goals,” says Marlissa. “Emillions Art is poised for a new chapter of growth, partnering with our neighbors here in Naples and around the world as we discover together the joy that art brings to us all!”

ADVANCES IN OUT DOOR LED LIGHTI N G When we mention using LED bulbs in outdoor lighting systems, many people shy away, fearing their home and landscaping will take on an unearthly bluish cast. While that was certainly an issue in the past, thanks to new technology it’s very difficult to tell the difference between LEDs and traditional bulbs anymore. Here are several benefits of choosing LEDs to illuminate your home and landscape.

E XT E N D E D LIFE

The lamp life of an LED is roughly 10 times that of an incandescent or quartz halogen bulb. LEDs typically last for 30,000 to 40,000 hours. Even burning from dusk to dawn (an estimated 12 hours) 365 days a year uses 4,380 hours, roughly 1/10th the life of the bulb.

E N E R GY CON SU M PT IO N

An LED light uses approximately 80% less energy than the aforementioned incandescent or halogen bulbs. That’s a huge savings, especially in commercial applications, with a higher volume of fixtures burning from dusk to dawn.

GR E AT E R VA R IE T Y

While it’s true that incandescent bulbs have a wide variety of wattages, LEDs have a greater variety of intensities, providing homeowners with more options to customize the intensity and beam spread. Intensity, beam spread, and color temperature are what determine the final look.

COLOR - C HA N GIN G OP TI O NS

Fancy having orange and blue lighting during college football season? Or decorating with red and green lighting during the holidays? With the right installation, changing colors is at your fingertips via remote control or a mobile app. LEDs provide brilliant, clear, saturated color because the diodes are the actual color source. Special fixtures used at installation allow for color-changing LEDs; or you can install an additional system at a later date that works off a separate power source. (TOP) Warm LED lights illuminate the path around this pool for safety and provide dramatic uplighting for the poolside landscaping. (BOTTOM) Well-placed lighting bathes the first floor of this Mediterranean beauty, while creating mysterious recesses on the darkened second story.

OUTDOOR LIGHTING PERSPECTIVES LIGHTING Following a four-year tour in the US Air Force, I returned to my native upstate New York when I received a call from a service buddy and an invitation to move to Naples. I was looking for a change, an opportunity. It was not a tough sell to entice me to Naples! I began driving for Pepsi and two years later an opportunity with UPS presented itself. I spent the next 16 years moving up the ladder from driver to management. Sensing I was still not in the right place, I took a six-month sabbatical. One morning I picked up the Naples Daily News and saw a classified ad offering an opportunity to open an Outdoor Lighting Perspectives franchise. I did my due diligence researching the company and the opportunity

and in February of 2002 I put my first job on the ground. Working from my kitchen table, like many entrepreneurs, I hired help as needed for the installations. Business grew steadily, and I was able to add staff. Sixteen years later, I have two full-time installation crews, a full-time service crew, and two office staff. With my two children successfully established (one a recent Furman University graduate and the other a sophomore at George Washington University), I have been able to dedicate more time to some athletic pursuits. I’m an avid triathlete, and have served on the board of Naples Area Triathletes and led the group as president for two years. I’ve also served on the board of the Naples Velo Cycling Club and am an active member of the Naples Pathways Coalition. I am able to combine my passion for cycling (I ride six days a week) with my love for Naples’ beaches by taking my cruiser bike to a nearby beach with my fiancée Susan to enjoy

the sunset at least once a week. Susan and I also enjoy spending time with Susan’s daughter Lauren, an interior designer who relocated back to Naples from Baltimore. -Kurt Shearer

INTRACOASTAL

CHIC FAMILY-FRIENDLY LUXURY BY BROOKE PARKER PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAKE BIBLER

L

OCATED IN A COZY bayside enclave, this

family home is a stunning example of the best of contemporary trends seamlessly blended within a neighborhood that’s become known for Mediterranean-style houses. The exterior of the home features some of the traditional Mediterranean elements, but stands out with a sand-finished stucco tile roof, concrete finishes, casement style windows rather than bronze, and dramatic Ipe-wood cladding. “The homeowner was hoping to have a modern, clean lined design that was low maintenance for their growing family,” claims interior designer Sybill Johnson. “The owners are very stylish and very much into the trends of today, so that was a consideration throughout the process.” Entering the home through the custom solid walnut pivoting door, one’s eye goes directly through the great room’s large windows and pocketed sliders to the stepping stones of a disappearing edge pool, and beyond to the Intracoastal. The house appears to be floating on water, and the sleek, modern, and low-profile furnishings allow the waterfront view to remain the focal point of the home. This home incorporates an indoor basketball court, and a bonus room designed for versatility that would grow with the family and include a theater zone, a gaming area with a wet bar, and sleeping space to accommodate the children’s sleepovers and large family visits. The contemporary interior includes a charcoal concrete floor for a cool, urban look. Wood elements were integrated in the design for warmth, and special attention was paid to the lighting throughout the home, including a variety of different LEDs to brighten the darker finishes and highlight structural elements such as the stacked stone fireplace. 56 | YOU R HOME M AGA Z IN E

HOME SWEET HOME The pivoting, hand crafted, solid walnut door was custom-engineered for this house and opens effortlessly to the waterfront views. Gray shell stone pavers with breaks filled with black river pebbles and glass railing lead to warm wooden finish Clopay garage doors. A custom Ipe wood cladding and a trellis line one wall, while Boral Moderna Ledgestone frames the door. YOUR HOME MAG AZ INE | 57

LAYERED LIVING The great room is divided into different seating areas and enjoys an expansive charcoal-stained slab floor. Each area has a layered design of three-wood veneered recessed ceilings backlighted by tape lighting, and multi-layered light fixtures like these Moooi Raimond pendants from Light Up Your Life. The fireplace has a white concrete hearth and features the same Boral Carbon Ledgestone used on the exterior of the home. Linear lighting highlights the texture of the feature wall. Mother of pearl shell, incorporated into the columns and to the right of the fireplace, sparkle with the light.

THE FAMILY HUB Woods, whites, and grays play off each other in this ultramodern, high end kitchen which boasts custom designed veneered Italian cabinetry with motorized upper cabinets. A horseshoe-shaped island has large family entertaining in mind. The splash is full height, set against waterfall mitered Calacatta quartz countertops from. The darker gray custom concrete waterfall countertop with integrated fiber optic lighting is both practical and ahead of trends. Durable professional grade stainless steel appliances and six-burner cooktop from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery add function.

ENTERTAINING EXCELLENCE Two Larmes bubble light fixtures were combined for a scale suitable to the extra large dining room table. Old and new merge with the owner’s own antique Indian gate mounted over a clean-lined modern Restoration Hardware console. Motorized Somfy solar shades were installed at all large openings to buffer sunlight.

VELVET DREAMS A custom velvet headboard brings the drama to the master bedroom with bedding in the same lush textured eggplants. The ceiling features channeled out squares backlit with LED tape lighting. Warm satin gold accents are sprinkled throughout, from the Robert Abbey Sputnik hanging pendants to the accessories in the shagreen textured TV console. A step up from the bedroom is a sitting area beneath a large steel circular Hubbardton Forge Aura hanging pendant, creating a private owners retreat that overlooks the pool.

WOODEN RETREAT A shiplap wall, distressed wood floors, and a bunk bed with clean lines lend a sailor vibe to this boy’s room, while the galvanized Windmill fan by Quorum and the galvanized pipe shelving give it an urban design feel.

Additional features include floating ice decks, stepping stones, and a sun shelf for shallow play for kids. Wood cladded exterior ceilings shade the gourmet outdoor kitchen and dining area with soapstone counters and a coordinating cladded wood.
