Hair Additions: A

Violet Demao

Hair additions are any external hair-bearing device added to existing hair or scalp to give one the appearance of a fuller head of hair, such as hair weaves, extensions, hair pieces, toupees, partial hair prostheses, hair wefts, etc. Devices may consist of human hair, synthetic fiber, or a combination of both.

How Are They Kept On?

Partial hair additions are attached in a variety of techniques, which include:

Attached to existing hair – Weaves, fusion, bonding, cabling, micro links, beading are all general terms of techniques that are attached to the client’s existing hair. These techniques are used to provide security for the active lifestyle. They are dependent on the growing of existing hair and therefore must be reattached or tightened as the exiting hair grows.

Attached to the skin – Includes adhesives such as two-sided tapes and new, improved waterproof liquids. Although most adhesives are safe,it is best to have a patch test done by a dermatologist or trichologist if you have a history of allergies. Even if you do not have allergies, it’s always best to have a patch test done in advance, just in case. Vacuum bases – Hold on by suctions through an air-tight fitting foundation.

Keep in mind that proper hygiene must be maintained when wear a hair addition for extended periods o time. It is essential that one must clean the scalp and hair on a regular basis.

Can Hair Additions Appear Natural?

Modern day advancements in products along with the technical skills of an experienced specialist are essential. Although lace wigs are popular, it is only one of two solutions offered, chances are the worker is a stylist and not a certified trained specialist. Remember, the technique requires skill and the hair addition should be undetectable (it should not look like a wig). The most important factor is the client. The client must understand that they will have to spend the required time to keep the hair addition looking its best.

How Much Should I Expect To Spend?

Depending on the experience and knowledge of the specialist, the materials and design, the price can range from $750-2,500 for a quality custom-made hair addition. Although insurance does not cover male or female pattern hair loss, it may cover the cost of a hair addition when the hair loss is due to disease or abnormalities.

What Is Best, Human Hair or Synthetic?

The choice depends entirely on the attachment technique and lifestyle of the individual. Either human hair or synthetic, or a combination of both can be used successfully when matched to the proper individual. A competent specialist will advise you as to the proper components for your individual lifestyle.

Can Hair Additions Be Used In Combination With Hair Replacement Surgery?

Temporary usage of hair additions while undergoing lengthy hair transplant sessions is becoming increasingly popular with many men and women who do not wish to appear “under construction” while in public. Many successful transplants will take from 1-2 years to complete. Before

Who started this whole New Year’s resolution idea anyway?

The New Year’s celebration can be traced back to the ancient Babylonians over four thousand years ago. Back then, it took place in March to coincide with the spring planting season.

2025 is the year to see what you’ve been missing. A resolution is a goal, so plan to live in a progressive world without glasses or contact lenses. Laser vision correction is an outpatient procedure performed by an ophthalmologist that corrects nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. A VISX S4 laser is used to re-contour and shape the surface of the cornea, enabling the eye to focus without glasses or contact lenses. The excimer laser is controlled by a computer and used by an experienced, well-trained surgeon so precise changes can be made to the shape of the cornea while touching only a small area of corneal tissue.

A preoperative evaluation can determine if you are a candidate for Lasik or PRK surgery. In general, candidates for Lasik or PRK should:

• Be at least 18 years or older.

• Have a stable prescription for one

Vision In 2025

year.

• Be nearsighted (myopia) -0.75 up to -14.00 diopters or farsighted (hyperopia) up to +4.00 diopters.

• Have astigmantism up to -4.00 diopters.

• Have healthy eyes.

100% of Lasik and PRK patients have improved uncorrected or normal vision.

The actual laser time is usually less than a minute and most patients are in and out of surgery in 15 minutes. The procedure itself is painless and patients are not put to sleep during the procedure. Very strong anesthetic eye drops are given about a half hour before the procedure and again immediately before the surgeon begins. Generally, most patients are quite comfortable within a very short time after Lasik and return to work the next day. Laser vision correction is very safe and with a low degree of risk.

Like DNA, or a fingerprint, your vision is unique. Traditional Lasik treatments were based on diagnostic technology similar to that used for the prescription of eyeglasses or contact lenses.

With the iDesign Advanced WaveScan Studio, individualized laser vision correction is now available. This diagnostic device maps the entire

optical path of the eye and provides precise and detailed information which the doctor calls your “fingerprint of vision.”

The iDesign Advanced WaveScan Studio is combined with the Star S4 IR® excimer laser’s exclusive technology providing you with a very precise treatment:

• Iris registration technology provides a noncontact, automated method to correctly align and center your treatment while allowing for instant re-registration in the event of intraoperative movement.

• Variable repetition rate (VRR) delivers Fourier-reconstructed shapes with optimized ablation time while minimizing thermal impact on the cornea.

• Variable spot scanning (VSS) technology incorporates an array of varying laser pulse diameters to ensure an accurate match between target and ablation shapes.

• ActiveTrak 3-D™ active eye tracking technology follows the eye’s motions in three dimensions to capture more than 99.4% of eye movements.

• ActiveTrak™ automatic centering technology locates and automatically sets the treatment center in relation to the pupil center.

In This Edition…

Your Health Magazine is on a mission. There are far too many people, insured or not, who do not go to the doctor when they should, and in millions of cases, don’t know who they should go to, or why.

People are encouraged to buy a new house, car, cell phone or big screen TV, and those companies make themselves very visible and their products easily attainable.

Information about, and from, local healthcare providers is not easy to find, and many times those services are difficult to access.

Information and encouragement always lowers fear and trepidation about anything, and this is especially true in healthcare. While general information is available on web-sites, specific information from local providers is almost impossible for people to find. This is one of the key reasons chronic and episodic conditions are not cared for. It is our mission to:

Make A Difference By Empowering and Encouraging People To Live Healthier By Going To the Doctor When They Should.

There is a lot of evidence that the health professionals who participate in Your Health Magazine have helped many people over the years. We at Your Health Magazine salute you!

The prostate, a male organ located below the bladder and wrapping 360 degrees around the urethra, can enlarge with age, restricting urinary flow. This condition, known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), often leads to symptoms such as frequent urination, weak urinary stream, and urinary tract infections. Treatment focuses on reducing prostate size and improving urinary flow.

Symptoms Of Enlarged Prostate

Symptoms range from mild to severe, often developing gradually over years but potentially worsening after surgery or other triggers. Common symptoms include:

• Weak urine stream

• Difficulty starting urination

• Incomplete bladder emptying

• Frequent urination, especially at night

• Sudden urge to urinate

• Dribbling or leaking urine

• Straining to urinate

• Recurrent urinary tract infections

Evaluation Methods

Diagnosing an enlarged prostate involves assessing symptoms and determining the severity of urinary blockage. Common tests include:

• Physician evaluation and symptom questionnaires (e.g., IPSS)

• Rectal exam

• PSA blood test

• Cystoscopy (camera-based urethra and bladder examination)

• UroCuff test (measures blockage severity)

• Trans-rectal ultrasound (prostate size assessment)

Treatment Options

Treatment is tailored to individual needs and symptoms, often progressing from lifestyle changes to medical or surgical interventions.

Behavioral Modifications

Simple changes, like reducing evening fluid intake and limiting caffeine or alcohol, can alleviate symptoms.

Enlarged Prostate / BPH

Medications

Alpha-blockers (e.g., Flomax, Rapaflo): Relax prostate muscles to improve urine flow but may cause side effects like sexual dysfunction or blood pressure changes.

5-alpha-reductase inhibitors (e.g., Proscar, Avodart): Shrink the prostate, potentially enhancing urinary flow, with side effects including erectile dysfunction and breast tenderness.

Office-Based Procedures

UroLift®: A minimally invasive procedure that lifts obstructing pros-

tate tissue out of the way. It is quick, safe, and preserves sexual function, offering long-lasting relief.

Surgical Procedures

Trans-Urethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP): Removes obstructing tissue using electric cautery through the urethra. Though highly effective, it requires significant recovery and may alter sexual function.

Greenlight Laser Prostatectomy: Similar to TURP but uses a laser to vaporize tissue, offering comparable benefits and side effects.

DaVinci Suprapubic Prostatectomy: For very large prostates, this laparoscopic surgery removes obstructing tissue. While highly effective, it involves a more invasive approach with longer recovery times.

BPH is a common condition with a wide range of treatment options. Early diagnosis and a tailored treatment plan can greatly improve quality of life while minimizing complications. Consult a urologist to explore the best option for your needs.

Exploring the Crucial Link

The Link Between Endodontic and Periodontic Health

Endodontic and periodontic diseases are among the most common oral health issues that dentists encounter, and their interrelationship is crucial in comprehensive dental care. Understanding the connection between these two fields helps in diagnosing, treating, and managing oral health more effectively.

Understanding Endodontics and Periodontics

Endodontics focuses on the treatment of diseases and injuries of the dental pulp and the tissues sur-

rounding the root of a tooth. The most common procedure in endodontics is root canal treatment, which involves the removal of infected or inflamed pulp tissue. Periodontics, on the other hand, deals with the structures surrounding and supporting the teeth, primarily the gums and bone. Treatments in periodontics aim to address conditions such as gingivitis and periodontitis, which can lead to tooth loss if not managed properly.

The Connection Between Endodontic and Periodontic Diseases

The link between endodontic and periodontic diseases is significant because an infection in one area can often affect the other. For example, an untreated periodontal disease can lead to the formation of deep pockets around the tooth, which may allow bacteria to reach the pulp, causing endodontic problems. Conversely, an infection of the dental pulp can extend into the periodontal tissues through the root canals, potentially leading to periodontal issues.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Accurate diagnosis is key in determining whether a patient is experiencing an endodontic problem, a periodontal issue, or a combination of both, known as a combined periodontic-endodontic lesion. Diagnosis typically involves dental X-rays and may include tests such as pulp vitality tests and periodontal probing.

Treatment will depend on the primary cause and the extent of the disease. If the issue is primarily endodontic, a root canal may be performed to remove infected pulp and seal the tooth. If periodontal disease is the main concern, treatments may include scaling and root planing, and possibly flap surgery, to clean the pockets of bacteria and debris. In cases of combined lesions, both endodontic treatment and periodontal therapy may be necessary to manage the infection and preserve the tooth. Root canal therapy is always performed first and allowed to heal. After several weeks, the periodontal condition is then addressed. End-

odontic healing is more immediate and more predictable than the slower healing latter care. When rendered in the proper sequence, often ideal healing and dental health is maximized. Prevention and Maintenance

Preventative care is essential in avoiding both endodontic and periodontic diseases. Good oral hygiene practices, such as regular brushing and flossing, help prevent the buildup of plaque, which can lead to periodontal disease. Regular dental check-ups are also crucial, as they allow for early detection and treatment of problems before they escalate.

The relationship between endodontic and periodontic health is a testament to the complexity of oral health. Understanding and addressing this relationship is crucial for dental professionals aiming to provide holistic and effective treatment to their patients. Through accurate diagnosis, targeted treatment, and good preventive care, it is possible to manage these conditions successfully, preserving both oral health and overall well-being.

Winter Foot Care: Choosing the Right Shoe Gear for Cold Weather Activities

As the winter season sets in, it brings with it a unique set of challenges for maintaining podiatric health. Cold temperatures, snow, and ice can pose risks to our feet, making it crucial to invest in the right shoe gear for winter activities. Whether you’re planning a leisurely winter stroll or engaging in more intense activities, proper footwear is essential to keep your feet warm, dry, and protected.

The Importance Of Proper Winter Footwear

Cold weather can lead to various foot-related issues, such as frostbite, numbness, and increased susceptibility to injuries. Therefore, choosing the right winter footwear is not just about comfort but also about safeguarding your foot health. Insulating against the cold, providing traction on slippery surfaces, and maintaining breathability are key factors to consider when selecting winter shoes.

Insulation and Warmth

When it comes to winter shoe gear, insulation is paramount. Look for shoes with adequate insulation to keep your feet warm in chilly temperatures. Insulated boots with materials like Thinsulate or Gore-Tex provide excellent warmth while allowing moisture to escape, preventing sweat from accumulating inside the shoe.

Waterproof and Water-Resistant Features

Winter often brings wet and snowy conditions, making it crucial to invest in footwear that offers water resistance or waterproofing. Wet feet not only lead to discomfort but also increase the risk of frostbite. Boots with sealed seams, water-resistant coatings, and waterproof membranes like Gore-Tex are excellent choices for keeping your feet dry during winter activities.

Traction For Slippery Surfaces

Slippery sidewalks and icy paths

are common in winter, making slip and fall accidents a significant concern. Choose footwear with a robust outsole that provides excellent traction. Look for boots with deep treads and slip-resistant materials to ensure stability on icy or snow-covered surfaces. Some brands even offer boots with built-in crampons or spikes for added grip.

Breathability

While warmth is essential, proper ventilation is equally crucial to prevent moisture buildup inside the shoes. Choose winter footwear with breathable materials to allow sweat to escape, keeping your feet dry and reducing the risk of fungal infections. Moisture-wicking socks can also contribute to maintaining a dry and healthy foot environment.

Investing in the right shoe gear

for winter activities is a proactive approach to maintaining optimal podiatric health during the colder months. Prioritize insulation, water resistance, traction, and breathability to ensure your feet stay warm, dry, and protected. With the right winter footwear, you can confidently embrace the season’s activities while safeguarding your foot health.

Can just four implants replace all of the teeth on the top or the bottom of your mouth? Thanks to advances in dental implant technology, that answer is a resounding yes.

Believe it or not, tooth loss is extremely common among adults, especially as we age. In fact, more than 35 million people in America are missing all of their upper and/or lower teeth. Rather than living with the discomfort and hassles of dentures, many people are opting for what is called “all-onfour” dental implant restoration.

All-On-Four: One Full Arch Of Teeth, Four Dental Implants

To fully understand this remark-

A Reason To Smile Again

able technique for replacing teeth, you should first understand what a dental implant is. An implant is a small titanium screw that fits inside your jawbone and replaces the root-part of a missing tooth. Minor surgery is required to insert the implants. Once the implant is in place, a crown is attached to give you a highly realistic-looking and functional prosthetic tooth.

Here’s where it gets really interesting: You do not need a dental implant for each and every one of your missing teeth. All you need is four precisely placed implants on the top of your mouth, and four on the bottom, to restore your full smile. That’s the beauty of the all-on-four. And because the implant is made of titanium, it has the unique ability to fuse to living bone and function as part of it. So eventually, the dental implant becomes part of the jawbone and serves as a strong, long-lasting foundation for your new teeth.

Besides ensuring that your implants are permanently fixed in place,

Missing Teeth or Tired of Wearing Dentures?

Thanks to advances in dental implant technology, just four implants can replace all of the teeth on the top or the bottom of your mouth.

this bone fusion has another important benefit: it prevents future bone loss in the jaw. This helps to maintain a more youthful facial structure – and better oral health. But perhaps the biggest surprise about the all-on-four is how quickly it can transform your life.

What’s The All-On-Four Dental Implant Procedure Like?

It can be scary to get implants for the first time. Most of that fear is probably due to the uncertainty, so here is the step-by-step process for getting an All-On-Four dental implant.

First, your dentist will want to make sure your comfortable, so either local or general anesthesia will be administered.

Second, the dentist or surgeon will prepare your mouth for the implants, which involves removing your remaining teeth that are failing. They will then remove any diseased or infected tissue from your jaw and gums.

Next, they will begin the implantation process. This means they will

insert the titanium screws into your jawbone. Most likely, they will place two implants toward the front of your mouth and two towards the back of your mouth so the “anchors” can evenly bare the force of the denture.

After the implants have been placed, they will thoroughly clean the surgical sites and suturing all the incisions. Then you’ll be taken to a recovery room where you can relax and take time to wake up from the anesthesia.

How Do You Know If The All-On-Four Procedure Is The Right Option For You?

At your All-On-Four consultation, you’ll receive a 3D CT Scan. This scan will help determine if you need implants and assist your doctors in creating your treatment plan. So if you want to learn more about dental implants, simply schedule a consultation with an All-On-Four provider. It’s the best way to find out how dental implants can change your life.

Chasing Away the Winter Blues

The winter holidays are over, and the days are shorter. Sometimes, we can feel down or unmotivated during the colder

months. Whether you call it the blues or SAD (seasonal affective disorder), there are easy steps to keep our spirits up as we await the renewal of spring.

Exercise: Staying active during the winter months is not only good

Brain training allows your brain to see what it is doing and adjust and re-balance in response. Also known as neurofeedback, it is a non-invasive way to promote wellness and continued growth.

We are certified providers of NeurOptimal® brain training. With more than 20 years and millions of hours of use worldwide, NeurOptimal® is a safe, time-tested, and effective brain training system.

for our bodies, but also for our minds. Regular exercise keeps oxygen flowing to the brain, and helps keep us sharp and alert. While it may feel more challenging to be active outside when the weather is cold or wet, there are indoor spaces that we can turn to for walks or workouts. In addition to the shopping mall or Washington DC museums, check out local gyms and county recreation centers. Many offer winter deals, such as free passes for guests, or one-day or one-class trial offers. Or check out exercise videos on social media, from the library or on the web and get moving at home. Ask a friend to join you in trying something new!

Sleep: We may feel more urge to rest and sleep on darker days. Use this time of year to reset your sleep schedule if you have insomnia or other sleep problems. Colder months mean a cooler bedroom, which can help improve sleep. Maintain a regular bedtime schedule and keep electronic devices away from the bed.

Light Therapy: One of the theories about the winter blahs is

that we are missing the sunlight. Get outside on sunny mornings and sit in the sun, or bring your coffee to sip in a sunny window. Experts recommend 30 minutes of light in the morning to keep your body’s natural rhythm of wake and sleep. Combine this with a morning walk to get a double benefit, even if it’s a cloudy day.

Joyful and Social Activities:

Studies of depression have shown the value of social and fun activities in elevating our moods. Each week, make a plan for at least one social engagement and one fun activity. Schedule coffee with a friend, a quiet dinner with your spouse, or a movie night with the kids. Then schedule something for yourself that gives you joy. It can be anything that gives you

It’s Not Over Til It’s Over Fertility Revisited

It is a well established fact that fertility is intimately related to the age of a woman. After the age of 35, fertility starts to drop off significantly. In the absence of a specific diagnosis, patients trying to conceive at that age for more than six months of duration are said to have unexplained infertility.

What is little known is that in the absence of any treatment, and while waiting to establish treatment, the natural rate of conception leading to

ongoing pregnancy or life birth is approximately 15% at six months for a 35-year-old woman with two years of prior unexplained infertility. This rate is 24% after 12 months. For 42-yearold women this rate decreases to 8% after six months and 13% after 12 months.

Once a cause of fertility has been established however, this rate can be expected to be much lower. Therefore, women waiting to start their fertility treatment, or between treatment cycles and with a diagnosis of unexplained infertility, may still attempt natural conception. For patients who are older who have a much diminished ovarian reserve, they may choose to explore options such as egg donation, adoption, or child-free living.

Why Try Alone?

Furthermore, an online study involving over 8,000 women found that the use of a menstrual cycle monitoring app in combination with fertility indicators can improve the chances of pregnancy.

Not all apps are created equal. Five apps are noted to have higher rates of success than others. These include Clue, Fertility Friend, Glow, Kindara, and Ovia.

The probability of pregnancy was increased by us much as 20% in women who were using monitoring apps.

The chances of a successful outcome was further increased when use of the apps were combined with the

application of fertility indicators. What are fertility indicators? Fertility indicators include basal body temperature, cervical fluid, cervix position and/or urine LH.

When a cycle monitoring app was combined with one or more fertility indicators, there was an increase in per-cycle probability of pregnancy – in other words your chances of getting pregnant in each cycle that you attempt to do so increases.

PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY

Family dentistry has been a way of life for me, and the passion for caring for children is in my genes. My mother, Dr. Lynda Dean-Duru, also a pediatric dentist, was my first inspiration towards family dentistry. Having started my journey in family care working as a pediatric dental assistant at Ashburn Children’s Dentistry, spent many summers as my mother’s mentee. Watching what seemed like magical healing art she deployed while treating her patients and knowing the need and the power of proactive preventive dental health for children, chose a career specializing in pediatric dentistry. It is an honor to join my mother in practice at Ashburn Children’s Dentistry where I get to fulfill my commitment to helping each child and parent have a positive and transformative dental experience, with compassion and fun! Having matured as an integrative laser pediatric dental surgeon and absorbing the ethos of Ashburn Children’s Dentistry, I work tirelessly to stay abreast of emerging research, and improve the quality of life for children by learning from the world’s leading researchers and clinicians. Through these means, we are continually integrating critical aspects of oral structure, craniofacial development, and its impact on the pediatric airway in the service of providing optimal patient outcomes. Caring for children is so powerful and rewarding and with that, understanding the importance of utilizing gentle and minimal intervention therapies. Treating the source of their issues—instead of the symptoms—and focusing on early prevention, has been critical to my role in educating parents and assisting their blossoming child’s development into a healthy and resilient adult.

I hold an undergraduate degree from Columbia University in New York, where studied Psychology. received a Doctorate of Dental Surgery from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA and completed my Pediatric Residency at Interfaith Department of Dental Medicine in Brooklyn, NY, where I served in a leadership role as Chief Resident. Board Certified, am a proud Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. When not helping my young patients build happy smiles, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, growing in my faith, improving my dancing skills, learning boxing moves, traveling — and cheering on Washington sports teams!

“Dr. Krystle,” as she is known by her patients, is thrilled to join her mom, Dr. Lynda, in practice. Patients and parents compliment her fun, compassionate approach. They are also impressed by her commitment to helping each child and parent have a positive dental experience. Having matured as a dental surgeon, she is constantly working to enhance her capabilities in the field.

PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY

Dr. Lynda Dean-Duru over the last twenty years has built one of the most progressive pediatric dental practices in Northern Virginia. Based in Ashburn, her Ashburn Children’s Dentistry practice serves thousands of families and stays on the cutting edge of Integrative wholistic airway-focused preventative dentistry.

As the eldest of nine children (including seven brothers), she witnessed a total transformation in the health of one of her little brothers after his aches and pains were totally resolved under the care of a well-trained dentist. She determined, as a result of that experience, to extend that kind of care to others as her life’s calling.

Her decades of study and practice have led Dr. Lynda to this focus. She holds her dentistry degree from the University of Benin, her General Practice residency from Howard University Hospital, her Pediatric Dentistry Specialty Training from Children’s National Medical Center, her Board Certification from the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, and her Fellowship Laser Certification from the Academy of Laser Dentistry. TMJ & SLEEP DISORDERS

Jeffrey L. Brown, DDS

Sleep & TMJ Therapy

Dr. Jeffrey Brown grew up in the state of Maine and went to Bowdoin College, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1982. He accepted early decision into the Georgetown School of Dentistry, and graduated from there in 1986. While at Georgetown, Dr. Brown worked in the Neurology Department as an assistant on a project that involved studying the regeneration of nerve tissue in the spinal column after major trauma.

Upon graduation from Georgetown Dental School, Dr. Brown worked for a short time as an associate in a practice in Falls Church, VA. From there, he moved on and built his own practice in the Fairlington neighborhood in Arlington, VA, creating one of the largest practices ever seen on the East Coast.

Dr. Brown took a short sabbatical to help raise his four young children and to continue his education. It was then that he began the process of understanding sleep apnea and how it correlates to TMJ treatment. His knowledge in the combined fields of TMJ, sleep and orthodontics has given him a perspective unlike most other practitioners who perform basic dentistry. In addition, Dr. Brown has also learned the advanced techniques involved in expanding an airway so that both children and adults can breathe better. His training continued over time at the famous Sleep Medicine Center near the Emory University Hospital. He is a certified Fellow of the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain, awarded the Level of Legacy with the ALF Interface Academy and holds memberships with many academies.

In 2013, Dr. Brown met Dr. Brendan Stack and was immediately impressed with the success Dr. Stack had in treating TMJ cases and being able to repair so many damaged lives. For Dr. Brown, helping people by dealing with their debilitating TMJ issues became his second calling. And, as they say, the rest is history!

VETERINARIAN

My passion for veterinary medicine began at age 5 when I received a kitten, sparking my lifelong goal to save animals. After attending summer veterinary programs at Tuskegee University and Michigan State, I earned a Biology degree from UMBC in 2003 and graduated from TUSVM in 2007.

I gained diverse experience in a busy Las Vegas practice, handling routine care, emergency medicine, surgery, and dentistry. My interest in holistic medicine deepened after learning about Osteopathy, which inspired me to pursue further training. Over the past decade, while raising two children, I honed my skills in general practice and began specializing in holistic care.

Now a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist, I’ve trained in Food Therapy, Advanced Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine, and Reiki. My goal is to offer integrative healing and explore additional certifications in Tui-na, Animal Rehabilitation, and Homeopathy.

In my free time, I enjoy board games, podcasts, audiobooks, and family TV nights.

VETERINARIAN

Deborah Cheryl Mallu, DVM, CVA, MAc

Healing

Since age 5, my passion for veterinary care has guided me. At 14, I embarked on my journey, working in veterinary clinics. Graduating from The Ohio State University with a DVM degree in 1977, I've devoted my life to caring for both pets and their families.

After a decade in clinical practice, I sought new avenues due to concerns about pets' health. In 1988, I delved into veterinary acupuncture, earning certification from the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society. This led me into holistic medicine, where I gained certification in homeopathy and underwent training with Dr. Richard Pitcairn.

In 1993, I sold my practice in Maryland and pursued spirituality in Sedona, AZ, becoming a Tibetan Buddhist nun until 2023. Embracing the belief in the equality of all life, I dedicated myself to alleviating suffering.

Returning to Maryland in 2006, I co-founded Holistic Veterinary Healing in 2013. Recognizing the interconnectedness of human and animal health, I pursued a Master's degree in Human Acupuncture in 2010. Since 2016, I've focused solely on animal patients, certified in Medical Ozone Therapy and as a Fear Free Practitioner.

Residing in Germantown with my dogs, I cherish moments with family and friends, enjoy farm visits, and find solace in meditation and watching my dogs.

VETERINARIAN

Ying Ngo, DVM, CVA Holistic Veterinary Healing

Growing up with a background in Traditional Chinese Medicine, I discovered my passion for integrative veterinary medicine early on. My father introduced me to Gua Sha and acupressure massage, sparking my fascination with healing modalities. Initially pursuing human medicine, I worked in acupuncture clinics, volunteered at Walter Reed, and conducted research at UMD and FDA. In 2015, I encountered Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) through Dr. Allison Marshall, a veterinarian certified in acupuncture. Inspired, I pursued veterinary medicine, earning a Bachelor’s in Biomedical Engineering at VCU in 2017 and completing my DVM at Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine in 2021.

I specialize in integrative medicine, blending holistic and conventional approaches to provide optimal care. Certified in veterinary acupuncture (CVA) through Chi University, I also have experience in pathology, surgery, and exotics.

In my free time, I enjoy lion dancing, spending time with family, and exploring new foods.

Chinese Medicine For Dysmenorrhea

Dysmenorrhea, a condition characterized by recurring pains before, during, or after menstrual periods, is a widespread health concern affecting women globally. The discomfort typically manifests in various forms such as cramping, lower abdominal pain, lower back pain, or a sensation of tension in the inner thighs. Accompanying symptoms might encompass headaches,

dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation, making it a challenging experience for many women.

There are two primary classifications of dysmenorrhea: primary and secondary. Primary dysmenorrhea, which emerges within three years of the onset of menstruation, generally lacks physical abnormalities and is often attributed to factors like allergic reactions, unhealthy diet, excess estrogen, obesity, smoking, and stress. Experts believe that in primary dys-

menorrhea, prostaglandins, substances involved in pain and inflammation, trigger uterine muscle contractions.

On the other hand, secondary dysmenorrhea is associated with gynecological conditions such as endometriosis, fibroids, or pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Treating dysmenorrhea in Chinese medicine involves identifying underlying patterns, whether they are classified as excess or deficiency patterns. These patterns encompass blockages of Qi and blood, retention of heat, dampness, or wind (considered excess) and deficiencies in Qi, blood, or imbalances in kidney and liver function (deemed as deficiencies).

Chinese medicine practitioners employ various strategies to alleviate dysmenorrhea symptoms. Acupuncture and herbal medicine are commonly utilized methods. Acupuncture aims to address pain by targeting specific points in the body, while herbal remedies like ginger and peach kernel have been traditionally employed for their anti-inflammatory and circulation-stimulating properties.

Recent reviews have highlighted the efficacy and safety of acupuncture in managing primary dysmenorrhea. Studies included in these reviews

demonstrated promising outcomes, indicating significant pain relief when compared to a placebo.

In Chinese medicine, ginger has been extensively used due to its anti-inflammatory and spasmolytic properties. It inhibits enzymes responsible for menstrual cramps, providing relief. Peach kernel, another staple in Chinese medicine, is recognized for its role in treating dysmenorrhea.

Understanding dysmenorrhea within the realm of Chinese medicine presents holistic approaches that aim not just to alleviate pain but also to address underlying imbalances. As research continues to explore these methods, they offer promising avenues for women seeking alternatives in managing menstrual discomfort.

Understanding Childhood Hunger

More than 16.7 million children in America – that’s one in four – are at risk of hunger, suffer food insecurity on a regular, often times daily, basis. And it is likely that these children will endure lifelong consequences as a result of having limited access to nutritious foods.

Good nutrition, particularly in the first three years of life, is important for establishing a good founda-

tion that has implications for a child’s future physical and mental health, academic achievement, and economic productivity.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), 15.8 million children under 18 in the United States live in households where they are unable to consistently access enough nutritious food necessary for a healthy life.

Hunger In Maryland

Maryland is one of the wealthiest states in the country and home to four of the richest counties in the nation, however 12.5% of households in Maryland face a constant struggle against hunger.

The high cost of living in Maryland, contributes to the struggle many families face to pay their housing, transportation and utility bills. These same families must make choices that often lead to hunger and poor nutrition. Many children often go without

Healthy Mouth Equals Healthy Body

Do you have bleeding gums, a sore mouth, loose teeth or bad breath? If so, you may be among the majority of Americans who have gum disease, also known as periodontal disease. And if you have it, you should take it seriously (by making an appointment with a periodontist today) not just because of the problems it can cause in your mouth, but because it may increase your risk of developing a range of full-body diseases, from heart disease to cancer.

The Connection Between Mouth and Body

Just like bacteria, which invades the body through cuts or other breaks in the skin, germs can gain access to the bloodstream when they get far enough under the gums. Periodontal disease causes pockets between the teeth and the gums, which are ideal breeding ground for some bacteria. And, unlike external bacteria that invade through obvious routes and cause obvious infection and swelling, periodontal bacteria are silent invaders, traveling from the mouth to all the crucial organs of the body undetected until they cause or contribute to a number of deadly diseases. There may be few symptoms and no pain, until your gums start to bleed and your teeth loosen and actually fall out.

Periodontal Linked Diseases

Periodontal disease is linked to diabetes, as both a cause and exacerbating factor. Studies have shown that treating periodontal disease can improve blood sugar, and just going in for regular cleanings improves diabetic control. There is also a strong association between periodontal disease and low birth weight babies. Studies have found periodontal bacteria in amniotic fluid. When bacteria get into the mouth and travel to the bloodstream they elevate prostaglandins, the same inflammatory markers that stimulate uterine contractions, causing early labor. Since pregnant women are more likely to get gingivitis because of elevated hormone levels, it’s crucial that they pay attention to dental care. Periodontal disease can be a factor in lung disease as well. Bedridden elderly patients who don’t or can’t take good care of their teeth can breathe in bacteria, which can cause pneumonia. People with COPD need to be especially careful to avoid periodontal disease since their lungs have a reduced capacity to fight off infection.

Dentists With Super Powers

Periodontists are dentists who specialize in the treatment and pre-

vention of periodontal (gum) disease. They are experts in the treatment of oral inflammation, plaque and bacteria as they receive extensive training in these areas during their three additional years of education beyond dental school, plus continuing education throughout their careers. Periodontists are familiar with the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating periodontal disease, and are trained in performing cosmetic periodontal procedures, and dental implants.

How to Get a Healthy Mouth and Body

Remedying gum disease may help

lower these overall health risks. When an inflammatory condition is suspected or diagnosed, it is important to quickly consult with a periodontist, as sometimes the only way to detect periodontal diseases is through a periodontal evaluation. A periodontal evaluation may be especially important if you:

• Have a high risk for periodontal diseases.

• Have heart disease, diabetes, respiratory disease or osteoporosis, or are thinking of becoming pregnant.

• Have a family member with periodontal disease. Research suggests

that the bacteria that cause periodontal disease can pass through saliva, which puts children and couples at risk for contracting the periodontal disease of another family member.

• Have a mouth sore or irritation that does not get better within two weeks.

• Take control of your preventative dental health. Make an appointment for a periodontal evaluation with an experienced periodontist today. Taking care of your teeth and gums will not only help enhance your smile, but will help you maintain your overall health.

Childhood hunger

meals and parents wonder if they will have enough food to last until their next paycheck.

Making sure children have nutritious food where they live, learn and play is important. Hungry children have trouble concentrating, get more headaches and infections, are more likely to be hospitalized and are less likely to perform well on athletic fields and in the classrooms.

It’s simply much harder for children at risk of hunger who suffer food insecurity to thrive. Here’s a snapshot of childhood hunger in Maryland in 2023:

• 208,648 children are at risk of hunger in Maryland

• 741,266 children live below the poverty line

• 659,367 households with children participate in the Food Supplement Program

• Only 54.4% of all Maryland school children eat school breakfast

• 586,734 children participate in a summer meals program on an aver-

age day vs. 387,000 children who get school lunch on an average day.

• 300 (12%) of 2,514 licensed center-based childcare providers participate in the Child and Adult Care Food Program.

Take Action To End Childhood Hunger

There are national campaigns that are at work in all 50 states that have state and city-based campaigns, nutrition education programs, and investments in local community partners of which you can donate time and or monies toward the campaign.

We must work to shine a national spotlight on the crisis of childhood hunger in America, creating a powerful movement committed to providing solutions within the communities we serve. We must be committed to build partnerships that enlist individuals committed in the cause and advocate policy changes needed to achieve our goals.

Caring For a Child Who Has Asthma

Submitted by Kensington Pharmacy

Asthma is a disease of your child’s lungs and the tubes that bring air to the lungs. With asthma, your child’s airways are constantly irritated and often become swollen and inflamed. Excess mucus forms in the airways. When your child’s airways are swollen and full of mucus, breathing becomes difficult.

Children who have asthma often have these symptoms:

• Coughing

• Wheezing – a whistling sound as they breathe out

• Shortness of breath or trouble breathing

• Chest tightness

Asthma is a serious illness. A severe asthma episode that goes untreated can cause death. Asthma is a chronic disease. Asthma doesn’t ever go away, but it can be managed.

What Medications Are Available To Treat My Child’s Asthma?

part of your child’s asthma treatment. Three ways you can help your child manage his or her asthma are to:

• Learn as much as you can about childhood asthma and asthma medications. Your doctor or health care provider and your pharmacist can suggest sources of information.

• Know what triggers your child’s asthma. Does your child have an asthma episode after running outside on a cold day? Does playing with Grandma’s cat start your child wheezing? Write down anything associated with an episode and play detective until you have tracked down all the triggers – then try to avoid them.

For your child’s doctor, prescribing medications for asthma is very complicated. Each case of childhood asthma has a unique combination of symptoms and responses to treatment. Each child’s environment is unique. Each child’s needs can vary with the season and a number of other factors. For example, how many respiratory infections does the child have? How much exercise does he or she get?

Your child’s doctor may need several weeks or months to find the right medications to keep your child’s asthma under control. You will need to be patient and work with the doctor during this process. You will also need to help your child understand that getting relief may take time. Your child’s doctor will use two types of medicines to treat your child’s asthma – (1) a controller medication and (2) a rescue, or quick-relief, medication. Your child will take a controller medication each day to prevent or reduce airway inflammation. For asthma episodes or symptoms, your child will use a rescue medication. Rescue medications relax the muscles that tighten around the airways during an asthma episode, and they make breathing easier.

What Else Can I Do?

Medications represent only a

• Monitor your child’s symptoms every day. Keep an asthma diary to record all the details you can about each asthma episode. The diary will be an invaluable resource for your child’s doctor and will help the doctor manage your child’s asthma. In addition, if your child is over four years old, your doctor or health care provider might suggest using a peak flow meter to measure your child’s ability to breathe each day.

What

Are the Treatment Goals?

Even after your child has a routine to manage his or her asthma, it is still important to keep track of how he or she is doing. Here’s what wellmanaged asthma looks like:

• Asthma symptoms are under control.

• Physical activities are normal for your child’s age.

• Your child can sleep through the night.

• Your child doesn’t miss school because of asthma.

Your child feels good about him- or herself and does not think of him- or herself as a sick person. After all, your child is so much more than the asthma. Encourage your child to be confident about confronting challenges and facing life. Talk to your doctor if you notice a change in any of these aspects of your child’s life.

Eating Just 10% Less Beef Could Save You 48 Extra Minutes of Life Per Day

New Study Reveals

How

In a world grappling with escalating health issues and environmental challenges, a new study from the University of Michigan and Nutrition Impact, LLC, presents a transformative solution: altering just 10% of daily beef and processed meat intake to plant-based foods could enhance personal health and significantly lessen our environmental impact. This study, involving an analysis of over 5,800 U.S. foods using the Health Nutritional Index (HENI), demonstrates that even minimal dietary shifts can extend life by 48 minutes daily and reduce carbon footprints by 33%.

The research centers on the profound impacts that modest dietary changes can have on both health and the environment. It introduces the HENI tool, which measures the health impact of foods in “minutes of healthy life gained or lost,” and integrates environmental data like global warming potential and land use. This novel approach highlights the dual benefits of dietary adjustments—better health outcomes and environmental preservation.

Minor Dietary Changes Can Boost Health and Reduce Environmental Impact

By substituting just 10% of beef and processed meat with plant-based alternatives, individuals can achieve nearly an hour of extra healthy living each day and a significant reduction in dietary carbon emissions. The study underscores the environmental and health detriments of beef and processed meats, which are linked to chronic diseases and substantial

environmental degradation through high greenhouse gas emissions and extensive land and water use.

Conversely, the study champions the advantages of plant-based foods, which are nutrient-rich and environmentally benign. Foods such as fruits, vegetables, legumes, and nuts not only contribute to better health outcomes like reduced disease

risks but also have minimal environmental impacts. For example, replacing meat with alternatives like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches can add 33 minutes of healthy life per serving, while options like baked salmon offer substantial health benefits with lower environmental costs.

This research serves as a crucial wake-up call not just for consumers but also for policymakers and producers, illustrating that strategic dietary substitutions can profoundly affect public health and ecological health. It provides a practical, actionable path for individuals to improve their health while also combating climate change.

The study articulates a clear message: small, deliberate dietary modifications can have significant, positive outcomes for personal health and global sustainability. By choosing more plant-based foods and reducing red meat consumption, we can all contribute to a healthier, more sustainable world—one meal at a time. The implications are tangible and far-reaching, encouraging everyone to rethink the environmental and health impacts of their food choices.
