Budgens celebrates its historic 150th birthday this year, offering huge opportunities for retailers.

A very warm welcome to your latest issue of Your Budgens on what is a very special occasion for us all: the historic 150th anniversary of this outstanding brand!

The feedback from Budgens retailers and shoppers so far has been extremely encouraging, so I’m excited to see the wider range beginning to appear in-store.

As those of you who were able to join us at the recent birthday celebrations at Twickenham learned, we have plenty of plans to help Budgens retailers really make the most of this very special year, not least of which is the launch of a fantastic £50,000 community fund.

Another highlight of the summer is the return of our popular Budgens Wine Festival. The Festival features lots of amazing deals and exclusive products that will really help you generate excitement in-store and on social media.

This fund will be accessible to all Budgens retailers and will allow you to further enhance the vital support that you already give to local charities and good causes in your communities. You can read all about this and more in our extended review of the 150th birthday party in this issue.

It was also fantastic news that Booker was recently named Wholesaler of the Year at the Grocer Gold Awards, a great achievement.

At Budgens we have plenty of plans to help make sure the summer months are busy and profitable on this, our 150th anniversary.

One of the biggest recent developments that will definitely help drive footfall, sales and profits this summer is the continuing rollout of Jack’s, your exclusive new own brand. A growing Jack’s range is already in-store, but by the end of this summer we will have completed the full rollout featuring over 500 products in every key category.

Wine is a hugely important category in Budgens stores, and the Festival gives us all the chance to really create some noise around wine and drive extra sales and profits.

As always, there are some really inspiring retailer profiles in this issue. There’s always so much you learn from fellow Budgens retailers and I’m sure you will find some great ideas in the profiles that you can replicate in your business.

Finally, I would also like to congratulate the many Budgens retailers who have been using the Too Good To Go food waste management app and helped save over 323,000 meals from going to waste in the last year alone. Outstanding work and I would urge other retailers to try it out too.

Budgens retailers play their part in war on food waste Budgens retailers have played a major role in saving over 300,000 meals from going to waste through the Too Good To Go platform.

Budgens retailers are playing a key role in the group’s efforts to clamp down on food waste via the Too Good To Go platform.

Budgens retailers are making valiant attempts to slash food waste and support their low income shoppers with the help of anti-food waste organisation Too Good To Go. Budgens retailers alone have saved more than 94,671 meals from disposal in the course of the last 12 months - with the number of Budgens retailers signing up to the scheme growing.

In total, the group as a whole has saved over 135,000 kg of food going to waste; the equivalent of 323,293 meals. This is a CO2 saving of 337 tonnes, which equates to 503 return flights from London to New York. The scheme is powered by a freeto-download app that allows shoppers to search for and purchase ‘Magic Bags’ containing delicious surplus food items.

The contents of each Too Good To Go Magic Bag differs from store-to-store and day-to-day, but guarantees to deliver three times’ worth of value. Catherine Marston, Sustainability Manager at Booker, told Your Budgens: “I am proud of our symbol group retailers who have taken the opportunity to reduce their food waste through the sale of magic bags.

In addition to being environmentally friendly, it helps families to reduce their outgoings – which has never been more important – and underpins our values to support communities and the planet.”

Jamie Crummie, co-founder of Too Good To Go, commented: “It’s been fantastic to see our partnership with Booker’s customers go from strength to strength as we hit this great milestone. Not only is reducing food waste one of the most important things we can do to fight climate change, but it also allows for people to try out delicious food in an affordable way - it’s a win-win-win.”

Food-togo a ‘huge opportunity’ Wholesale data and insight specialists TWC and food-togo and out-of-home tracking programme MealTrak have reported that the food-togo market has grown by 9% year-on-year in value in independent convenience stores in the 12 weeks to 19 May. The total market across all channels has grown by 31% over the same period with grocery outlets growing even faster at 51%. TWC said this represents a “huge opportunity” for the sector to drive footfall, sales and profits in a high margin category.

Tom Fender, Development Director at TWC, commented: “It was understandable that many retailers opted to scale back their food-to-go offer [during the pandemic] as consumers weren’t commuting or getting out and about very much, rather they were preparing most of their meals at home. But what we have seen in the last few months is the rapid return of consumers eating food-to-go again.

“This is the ideal time for independent retailers to review their food-to-go range in line with what’s happening in the market to maximise this opportunity.

Now is the time to grab foodto-go sales.”

Booker dazzles at Grocer Gold Awards

Booker named Wholesaler of the Year at Grocer Gold Awards.

DRS operator secures £9m Circularity Scotland, the organisation which will administer the country’s deposit return scheme (DRS), has received £9m in funding from the Scottish National Investment Bank.

The cash will be used to fund the development of Circularity Scotland and also to help ensure a further £9m from Bank of Scotland. The £18m will fund the start-up costs of the DRS, which will go live in August 2023.

Booker has claimed one of the biggest awards up for grabs at the industry’s prestigious Grocer Gold Awards.

Held at London’s Guildhall on 14 June, the awards saw Booker scoop the prize for Wholesaler of the Year.

“As responsible retailers, the Fed’s members in Scotland will be on the frontline of the deposit return scheme. Unless exempted, they will form the backbone of the network of return points, where customers will bring their bottles and cans for the refund of the deposits.”

Budgens retailers to access hundreds of new lines as Jack’s rollout continues

Retailers reminded of Track and Trace changes Londis retailers are being reminded about the critically important changes to the tobacco track and trace system.

All Londis retailers registered on the track and trace system should already have received emails from Dentsu, the company which has now taken over the management of the system from previous managers De La Rue. It is vitally important that retailers respond to these emails as this process registers them on the live system. If they fail to respond to these emails, they could potentially lose the ability to sell tobacco products in-store.

Association of Convenience Stores chief executive James Lowman said: “It is important that retailers are looking out for emails from Dentsu and that they familiarise themselves with the upcoming changes to the tobacco track and trace system to ensure that they can continue to sell tobacco products in their store.

Jack’s, part of the Tesco family, is making an increasingly big mark across Budgens stores as the brand’s fullscale rollout continues this summer.

In a move designed to simplify the group’s own label offer for shoppers, the new range sees the Happy Shopper, Farm Fresh and Discover the Choice brands brought together under one quality Jack’s brand.

While an extensive range of fresh Jack’s products have been available for some months, completion of the fullscale rollout will provide retailers with Volume 14: July 2022

access to more than 400 lines across all key food and non-food categories.

The new range will also provide a number of benefits to Budgens retailers too, with PORs of more than 30% across the vast majority of lines, consistent branding, simplified ordering and more effective merchandising instore.

All Jack’s packaging will also carry the ‘Part of the Tesco Family’ logo giving retailers and shoppers alike the reassurance of Tesco quality for an affordable price.

Annual age increase for tobacco purchase under review An independent review has recommended that the minimum age of sale for tobacco products be increased by one year every year until no-one can legally buy tobacco products.

Key recommendations: l Raise the age of sales by one year every year until tobacco is ‘obsolete’ l Raise the cost of tobacco duties by at least 30% l Offer vaping as a substitute for smoking alongside information on the benefits of switching

A new independent review has recommended that the minimum age of sale for tobacco products be increased every year until no-one can legally buy tobacco products.

The Khan Review, entitled ‘Making smoking obsolete’, is an independent review conducted by Dr Javed Khan OBE into the Government’s ambition to make England smokefree by 2030.

One of the main recommendations is to introduce a New Zealand-style system that would see the age of sale raised from its current level of 18 by one year, every year, with the intention that eventually no-one will be able to buy tobacco in England.

Association of Convenience Stores Chief Executive James Lowman said: “This recommendation would disrupt the very effective measures put in

place to enforce an age restriction at 18, which applies not just for tobacco but to many of the products local shops sell. We need to look at how this would work in practice, but it looks like it would be operationally very challenging for small shops. Underage smokers aren’t buying tobacco from shops, who have an excellent record of implementing the Challenge25 policy, but from friends, family and the black market.”

Cash handling in Post Office hits highest-ever level New figures reveal that Post Offices across the UK handled a record £3.23bn in cash in May, the highest amount ever recorded in a single month.

May was the third successive month where over £3bn has been deposited and withdrawn in a single month, highlighting the critical role that cash continues to play for shoppers.

Personal cash deposits totalled £1.35bn, up over 7% month-on-month, while withdrawals totalled £770m in May, up 2.7% month-on-month.

The Government recently announced that legislation would be introduced to protect access to cash.

CAP partnerships are made up of retailers, local authorities, police, schools, neighbourhood groups and health providers, who work together to make a positive

ACS backs online sales tax The Association of Convenience Stores has submitted evidence to the Government’s consultation on the development of an online sales tax to support local businesses. ACS is also calling on the Government to reduce business rates for retail properties.

In its submission, ACS highlights the current imbalance in the way that businesses are taxed, with physical stores being at a disadvantage compared to their online counterparts.

The introduction of an online sales tax that funds reductions in business rates would take significant steps toward redressing the balance between online and bricks and mortar retailers and give retail outlets more opportunities to invest.

The submission also advises that click and collect orders should be exempt from the online sales tax, as they encourage consumers to visit physical retail stores.

Learning curve Neslihan Turan might still be relatively new to the world of convenience retail, but her natural-born passion has made learning the ropes a breeze.

Life is one long lesson – and despite joining the school of convenience retail late in life, Neslihan Turan – or Nes as she is known to her shoppers – is acing all her tests.

and requirements fun and easy – and it certainly helped that I love shopping! I’ve also always been a foodie and love trying new foods and recipes.

In fact, from the moment she first started working as a parttime sales assistant in a store managed by her friend back in 2016, her natural-born talent for retailing, along with her innate people skills, were clear for all to see.

“My confidence quickly grew as I took on new responsibilities.

I was learning so much every day and couldn’t get enough of the environment and of the buzz.

So clear to see, that in 2018, the directors of the store invited her to take on a management role at another of their sites – a thrumming independent convenience store, smack- bang in the middle of central Brighton.

“I didn’t start working in retail until my late 30s and I really had no experience at all at the start,” Nes explains.

“I had so much to learn but fortunately one thing I did learn very quickly was how much I loved it.

“The fact I enjoyed it so much made learning all the new skills

“Having said that, I was still a little apprehensive when I later met the store’s directors to talk about the opportunity they were offering me in Brighton. I had confidence in myself, but it was still a big step-up and the store was also bigger than the one I had been working in. However, they reassured me of their support and they’ve certainly been true to their word.”

With the support of the business’s directors, Nes took to the new management role like a duck to water and quickly helped to ramp up sales and footfall at the former unaffiliated site.

“I started managing the Brighton store, which back then was called Easy Hours, in late 2018. It was 1,700sq ft and open Volume 14: July 2022

“The food-to-go offer has transformed footfall. We are now really busy first thing in the morning as shoppers come in for coffee and breakfast bits on their way to work .”

24 hours a day. There was so much to learn; I had to get to know the shoppers, their needs, the local trends and of course the staff. Again, I loved the challenge though,” she says.

“Brighton is such an engaging, dynamic place to run a business and due to its quite central location and round-the-clock trading hours, the store was busy, however, I knew it had the potential to give even more.

“Our shoppers are great, we have a really diverse mix, from the many local students and young people who live and work around here, plus quite a few middle-aged and elderly shoppers. Being in Brighton we also benefit from large volumes of visitors to the area.

“We get lots of shoppers who have come down for the day, the night, or for weekend breaks. I love our shoppers. For me, engaging with them is one of the best parts of the job.”

And it was through her talks with local shoppers than Nes spied a significant opportunity to take the store’s offer to the next level and better serve them in the process.

“When pandemic lockdown restrictions finally eased, we decided the Volume 14: July 2022

time was right to invest in the store,” Nes recalls. “Fortunately, we had a large amount of space at the rear that we knew we could extend into and offer our shoppers a far more comprehensive range.

“I spent many months canvassing shoppers about what they would like from the new store, and it quickly became very clear that they wanted a much larger chilled range, a quality food- and drink-to-go range and lots of special offers. Value for money is very important to our local shoppers.

“It was during that time that we also decided to move from being unaffiliated to the Budgens brand. The Budgens proposition was the perfect fit for what we wanted to achieve.”

And so, following a large extension to the rear which took the shop floor from 1,700sq ft up to 2,500sq ft and a complete internal refit in early 2022, the store officially re-opened as a picture-perfect Budgens in May.

The new-look store on Grand Parade now offers 12 bays of fresh food – more than double the range offered in the previous store.

“Our fresh and chilled offer is now excellent!” laughs Nes. “The old store really majored on alcohol, and we only offered a limited range of fresh meats but now we have a vast range, including whole chickens, steaks and fresh BBQ products, all of which are doing so well. Everything comes from Budgens and the shoppers are already raving about the range’s quality and value for money.”

The store’s fresh meat offer is complemented by a large range of fresh fruit and vegetables which also come from Budgens, plus a wide array of chilled ready meals from the Jack’s brand.

The needs of Brighton’s more eclectic shopper base are also met with a wide variety of vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free

and halal options, while the store’s grocery aisles also offer a breadth of world foods including Chinese and Jamaican ranges and a large American confectionery feature bay.

“Not only do frozen products offer greater convenience and flexibility, they also offer good value for money which is very important to many of our shoppers, especially the students and more elderly. Budgens’ Frozen Meal Deal, which offers two frozen pizzas and a tub of ice cream for example, is very popular.”

In a bid to cater to its value-hungry shoppers, the store also features six dedicated promotional ends.

And not forgetting its roots as an alcohol-focused store, Budgens Grand Parade also boasts a “vast” BWS range, with a five-metre chilled bay for beer, the same for white wine, plus a middle gondola for red wine and craft ale.

“We also have an Every Day Low Price (EDLP) bay for alcohol to really drive that value message home and complement the store’s wider offer which includes more premium products,” Nes says.

Spirits meanwhile, are housed in a brand-new back-lit feature display behind the main tills. The size of the spirits range has been increased by a third, allowing Nes to introduce a wider array of on-trend premium vodkas and gins.

“Alcohol is one of our best-selling categories and accounts for around 30% of our total sales and that figure is growing week-on-week as shoppers come to know about our amazing new offer,” Nes says. “The fact that we are open 24 hours is a big driver of the range’s success. We do get quite a lot of trade around midnight when shoppers come in after the pubs and bars have closed to buy products to take home and carry on the party!”

The fact that the store trades around the clock has also enabled it to introduce a rip-roaring food- and drinks-togo offer, in a bid to harness key early-morning footfall from Brighton’s dawn army of tradesmen, workers and commuters.

“I knew we had a massive opportunity with food-to-go,” says Nes, “and our new food-to-go area is my favourite part of the store, I’m so proud of it!”

The store’s drinks-to go-offer includes Costa Coffee, Fwip, Tango Ice Blast, Hershey’s and Reese’s plus of course a large range of chilled soft drinks.

When it comes to food-to-go, the store’s chillers offer a wealth of prepared sandwiches from Budgens, along with a range of freshly baked hot goods including Rollover Hot Dogs and a Chicago Town pizza offer which allows shoppers to buy by the slice.

“The food-to-go offer has transformed footfall,” says Nes. “We are now really busy first thing in the morning as shoppers come in for coffee and breakfast bits on their way to work.

That’s followed by a second rush mid-morning when shoppers come in for their lunch bits, and then a third after school when children and parents pop in for snacks and dinner items.

We then become pretty hectic again from 7pm to midnight, and especially on Fridays and Saturdays as Brighton attracts such a large volume of weekend visitors – there’s always something going on in Brighton!”

Needless to say, shoppers are besotted with their new-look store. “Existing shoppers are just so happy,” says Nes. “They really are blown away; the store offers everything they wanted and more.

“They love to browse the range and it’s a shop that really encourages that. The team at Budgens worked so hard to create this wonderful spacious and airy-feeling interior. There is lots of space for shoppers to move about, take it all in and feel at ease.

“We’ve had so many wonderful comments and every day I am seeing more and more new faces, which is so satisfying.

“I love talking to those new shoppers and hearing their thoughts. When shoppers are happy it makes me happy. This job is addictive in that way and I just want to keep on getting better and better at it.

The Chandarana brothers have cooked up yet another successful new store in Hertfordshire by combining family experience, local products and the powerful Budgens brand.

Salt and caramel, tomato and basil, cheese and onion: uniting these classic flavours delivers a guaranteed recipe for success. And the same can be said of the Chandarana family’s newest Budgens store in the picturesque Hertfordshire village of Watton-at-Stone.

In a transformation spearheaded by brothers Sanjay and Rishi Chandarana, with the support of their parents and aunt and uncle who previously owned the site, the new store’s winning combination of family experience, Budgens brand and local products has created an offer that’s simply too tasty for local shoppers to resist.

Sanjay, who has a background in economics and

recruitment, explains: “Rishi and I both have qualifications and interests outside of retail and we both focused on other things after leaving university.

“However, retail is in our blood. Our parents, grandparents and auntie and uncle have all run stores, so while it certainly wasn’t inevitable that we would end up running a retail business, it certainly felt very natural and comfortable when we decided to focus on that side of things,” he says.

The pair, who oversaw the conversion of what was originally their parents’ store in Walkern to Budgens in 2019, had just opened their second Budgens site in Meppershall, when their uncle asked them to take on his Budgens store in Volume 14: July 2022

“My auntie and uncle had run the Watton store successfully for 12 years when he approached us about taking it over,” Sanjay says. “We literally jumped at the chance. It was already a really good store and ticked all the boxes that we were looking for in a third site.”

In addition to its central location in the busy, buzzing village of Watton, the site is also conveniently located just a short drive from Sanjay and Rishi’s two other stores.

“The store’s village location held a really strong appeal for us. We like trading in villages and being a big part of local village life, and Watton is just ideal,” Sanjay continues.

“The planning from the Budgens team was excellent. They really helped us to knuckle down on exactly what we wanted and what we could produce range-wise.”

“There’s also a very mixed shopper demographic. There are a lot of young families with children but also a lot of middleaged shoppers and more elderly ones.

“There’s a very special community here. It’s very close-knit, everyone knows everyone and when you walk down the street everyone says hello. It’s a very friendly place. There are also some great local businesses and lots of support for local enterprise.

“Watton is also a bit like a centre for the many small villages that surround it too. Many of those smaller villages have little local stores but there’s nothing like the range that we have here. When you walk around Watton on a summer’s day it’s buzzing. It almost has the feel of a holiday village.

“We officially took the site over in March 2022, closed for a three-week refurbishment and opened up again as a brand new Budgens in mid-April.

“The whole process was incredibly smooth, and Budgens’ support was second to none.

Sanjay says that three key factors drove his and Rishi’s adoption of the Budgens brand.

“Firstly, the Budgens brand is very positively perceived by shoppers. It’s seen as a premium store concept and here in Watton it’s a concept that we knew would work really well.

“Secondly, the Budgens chilled offering is really good and chilled was something we knew we had a great opportunity to focus on here.

“Thirdly, we knew that the Budgens brand would allow us to maintain our independence and work with local suppliers which is something that is really important to us.

“In the Watton store we now have products from the local bakery, local fruit and vegetable suppliers, and we even have a whole chiller dedicated to meat from the local butcher Bridget B’s.

“We really try to remain local wherever we can. It gives us such a strong USP and local shoppers love it. All local produce is also highlighted with the Discover Local point of sale to really drive the point home.”

Sanjay also describes Budgens’ support throughout the planning and fit-out process as “fantastic.”

“The planning from the Budgens team was excellent. They really helped us to knuckle down on exactly what we wanted and what we could produce range-wise.

“At just 1,298sq ft the site was pretty tiny but again the Budgens team pulled out all the stops to help us create a brilliant design that would make the best use of space and wow shoppers. The support really was second to none.”

While the store’s internal space wasn’t extended as part of the refurbishment, the removal of its former large Post Office fortress, in favour of a Post Office counter at the tills, did increase shop floor space.

“With the refit our aim was to create a new offer that really catered to the three key times of day: breakfast, lunch and dinner,” Sanjay says.

“Bridget B’s is a fantastic local butchery business which also has a traditional butchery shop in Watton High Street,” Sanjay explains.

“We sell lots of their pre-prepared convenience meats in our store; things like marinated chicken breasts, burgers, kebabs and BBQ selection packs. Sales are really strong, especially at this time of year and have been growing steadily since we re-launched,” he adds.

The fresh-focused store also boasts a large array of chilled soft drinks – and to appeal to its many young families, a wide range of American confectionery, featuring leading brands such as Swedish Fish and Mike & Ike.

So, what are shoppers making of their new Budgens store?

“They’re loving it!” laughs Sanjay.

“We have received so many lovely comments from shoppers since re-opening and they are continuing to pour in.

“We’ve only been here two months, but it feels like two years.”

And positive comments aren’t the only things pouring in.

Store footfall has more than doubled since it re-opened, while overall sales and average basket spend have also soared.

“We’ve actually been quite shocked by the rise in footfall as the store was already doing really well prior to the re-brand, but it almost doubled straight away and is still growing,” says Sanjay.

“I think what’s happening is that we are now attracting new shoppers from further afield, as-well-as pulling existing local shoppers in for a wider array of occasions and in some cases multiple times a day.

“Shoppers say they love the range and they clearly love the new look and feel too. We‘ve gone for a smart yet rustic look, with dark walls and ceilings and a wooden floor.”

An attractive wooden table at the front of the store is also used to showcase new products and create valuable in-store theatre.

And it’s not just shoppers who are thrilled with their local store’s new offer and look.

“Crucially our uncle and auntie love it too,” Sanjay adds.

“Our uncle still comes down almost every day to help us; the guy is a legend! The help and support of our family cannot be overstated.”

Sanjay and Rishi’s mother and father Seema and Paresh also continue to play a key role, with Seema helping to manage the Post Office side of the business and Paresh still working in the Walkern site.

“As a family, we all work so well together,” adds Sanjay “It’s so nice to be able to draw on all their years of experience and fuse it with our own initiatives and ambitions.”

That was the message that Booker CEO Andrew Yaxley put to the hundreds of Budgens retailers in the audience at the recent celebratory Gala Dinner at Twickenham to mark the historic 150th anniversary of the Budgens brand.

Community Fund unveiled As part of its 150th birthday celebrations, Budgens has launched a Hero Awards Community Fund offering a share of £50,000 to charities and good causes around the UK.

Unveiled at the recent Budgens 150th Gala Dinner party, Budgens has launched a new Hero Awards programme, created to help Budgens and its retailers give back to the communities who shop in its 350 stores around the UK. The Budgens Hero Awards will reward local charities, good causes and heroes with grants to help make lives better in the communities which the stores serve.

ACS: Accessibility

Everyone is welcome!

ACS recently launched its Everyone Welcome Guide as an invaluable resource for retailers to help them deliver excellent service to all shoppers, including the millions with disabilities and different needs.

One of the things that our sector is most proud of is offering our communities good customer service experiences.

Convenience stores operate at the heart of villages, towns and cities across the UK and provide access to essential products and services as well as acting as a social hub to reduce loneliness in their local areas.

Recently, we launched our new Everyone Welcome Guide which has been developed in consultation with the Alzheimer’s Society, Business Disability Forum, Sense, Age UK, and National Innovation Centre for Rural Enterprise and we’re delighted to have been able to work with these organisations to produce a resource for retailers on how to provide excellent customer service for all customers including the millions of customers with disabilities and different needs.

physical changes such as installing ramps and ensuring that aisles are free of obstacles or behavioural changes such as changing the way that you communicate with customers and ensuring that colleagues are on hand to provide customers with assistance if they should need it.

Making adjustments in your store can benefit your customers and colleagues and many of the tips outlined in this guide do not require any investment but can still have a huge impact in improving your customers’ experience.

We are proud to have developed this new guidance which will help retailers to make their stores more accessible and as a result have a positive and lasting impact on their communities by ensuring that everyone is welcome.

Over the course of the pandemic, we saw convenience retailers go above and beyond to adapt the day to day running of their stores to ensure that they could continue to feed their customers, from offering home deliveries to widening aisles to comply with social distancing. Convenience retailers are extraordinarily talented in their ability to adapt and I am confident that the retailers in our sector will be able to take the information from this guide and apply it in their business and demonstrate that everyone truly is welcome in our sector.

Guest Column: Too Good To Go

Tackling waste one Magic Bag at a time Budgens retailers have more than played their part in helping save over 300,000 meals from going to waste by using the Too Good To Go app.

Booker Head of Sustainability Cath Marston celebrates the enormous achievement of Budgens retailers in reducing food waste.

With food waste such an important issue these days, we were absolutely thrilled recently to announce that Booker symbol group retailers have already saved over 300,000 meals from going to waste as part of our partnership with anti-food waste organisation Too Good To Go. Too Good To Go has one very simple mission: to make sure all food gets eaten, not wasted.

Budgens retailers more than played their part in helping us reach that unbelievable achievement. In total, some 525 Budgens, Londis and Budgens stores around the UK are signed up to reduce food waste via the free-to-download app that allows shoppers to search for and purchase ‘Magic Bags’ containing delicious surplus food items.

As retailers that are signed up will know, the contents of each Too Good To Go Magic Bag differs from store-to-store and from day-to-day, but the bags guarantees to deliver three times’ worth of value to shoppers.

That helps massively reduce food waste and it also helps retailers recoup some money from perfectly good food that would have otherwise gone straight into the food recycling bin.

To put into some kind of context the scale of that achievement, consider this: over the last 12 months alone this initiative has saved over 135,000 kg of food going to waste. How much food is that in real terms? Well, it’s the equivalent of 323,293 meals!

Or to put it another way, this is a CO2 saving of 337 tonnes which equates to 503 return flights from London to New York!

I am so very proud of our symbol group retailers who have taken the opportunity to reduce their food waste through the sale of magic bags.

In addition to being environmentally friendly, it helps families to reduce their outgoings – which has never been more important – and underpins our values to support communities and the planet.
