Booker steps up on sustainability A powerful range of commitments will build on progress already achieved Booker has launched a new initiative to reduce its carbon footprint and deliver a better, more sustainable business for the future, and to help retailers to do the same. The Better Trolley For A Better Planet initiative is Booker’s new commitment, designed to build on 12 years’ worth of already successful progress in reducing its carbon footprint. It is based on four key pillars – to improve supply from the perspective of climate and nature; to
encourage healthy and sustainable diets; to end waste; and to always respect community values and human rights. Each of these pillars breaks down into actions in all major operational areas. Among the commitments that Booker is making as part of Better Trolley is to become carbon next zero by 2035, with the delivery fleet at zero emissions by 2030. When sourcing products, Booker is committing to zero deforestation, sustainably sourced fish and agricultural own-brand products and certified Red Tractor/Bord Bia UK meat and dairy products. All eggs will be from cage-free hens by 2025, and ethical sourcing practices will be followed for high-risk products such as coffee, tea, cocoa, bananas and prawns. To reduce harmful waste, all board will be sustainably sourced, packaging will be reduced to a minimum, recycled content will be increased where possible and Booker will continue to remove nonrecyclable materials. Additionally, no edible food will be wasted and food waste in Booker’s own operations will be halved by 2030.

Retailers set to benefit from business rates reductions A 50% reduction in rates for the next financial year was announced in the Budget.
rates system include a new system of improvement relief, meaning that retailers who invest in their properties will not see a subsequent rise in their business rates for the first 12 months starting from April 2023.
Most independent retail businesses in England are to get a 50% reduction in their business rates next year as part of a range of measures announced in this year’s Budget. The new temporary business rates relief will see retail, hospitality and leisure properties receive 50% relief for 2022-23, up to a maximum of
£110,000 per business, Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced. At the same time, Sunak said that the Business Rates Multiplier, which adjusts the annual rates bills upward to account for inflation, will be frozen for 2022–23. Further changes to the business
Sunak ruled out scrapping the business rates system completely, a move that had been asked for by many industry bodies, but added that, from 2023, business rates property valuations will also take place every three years instead of every five. The changes are so far only confirmed for England. The Welsh Assembly will make a separate announcement regarding Business rates in Wales in the coming weeks.
Work begins on rebuild of Budgens store at Holt The CT Baker Group has started work to rebuild Budgens of Holt on 22 November, after the store was destroyed by a fire in June 2020. The business has been operating from a 5,000 sq ft temporary store in Holt, and this will continue while the construction work is ongoing. Holt Post Office will continue to operate from the store’s sister business at Bakers and Larners of

Holt, while home deliveries in the Holt area will continue to be served by CT Baker Budgens of Aylsham. Sandra Taylor-Meeds, who has managed the Budgens store at Holt for more than 30 years, will be working alongside Carl Milton, newly appointed Managing Director of the CT Baker Group, on the rebuild of the site. The work is expected to be complete by winter 2022.

“The Camberwell Road store is a new build store in south east London and it opened for the first time in August. I have two stores with Budgens now and have been with the group since 2005. I have a good relationship with the team at Budgens and it’s exciting to have this new store open and trading. “The area is dominated by young professionals and young families so I tailor my offer to that market and so far I’m please to say that trading is line with my hopes and expectations. I’m very confident about the future and I’m certainly looking forward to 2022.” Dipan Patel, Owner, Budgens Camberwell Road

BUDGENS OSPREY QUAY SERVICE STATION
“Our group, Falcon Retail, has been with Budgens since February 2019 and we have enjoyed a great relationship with Budgens ever since. We now have five stores with Budgens and the latest, Osprey Quay, opened in August. The store is a little different to our usual stores in that it is a service station and it’s more of a seasonal store than our others. It’s sited on the island of Portland, just off the Weymouth Coast.

Convenience store penetration increases, data reveals Increasing numbers of shoppers are using the local option, according to new research. The proportion of shoppers visiting convenience stores increased by 9% in the 12 weeks ending 17 October, new research reveals. The latest data from the Lumina Intelligence Convenience Tracking Programme shows the proportion of shoppers using c-stores rose from 49% to 58% in the past 12 weeks. During the same period, shoppers visited convenience stores more frequently, up 4% to 2.8 times per week on average and, despite a 3% decline in average basket size, basket value increased by 21% from £8.58 per trip to £10.38. In addition, the proportion of convenience store occasions that were
Volume 11: December 2021 Your Budgens November 21.indd 13
delivered increased by 2% to 7% and click-and-collect rose slightly by 0.2%, as in-store declined by 2% to 91%. The research shows planned top-up remains the primary mission within convenience, accounting for 23% of all trips. Newsagent missions increased by 2% to 21%, driven by older consumers becoming less risk averse due to the rollout of booster vaccines. The proportion of shoppers purchasing on impulse increased by 1% during the 12-week period, to account for 56% of purchases. “It was on promotion/ special offer” increased as a reason for impulse purchasing, with consumers eager to utilise promos, and purchasing of price-marked packs increased to 48%.
Healthier and sustainable diets becoming more popular Nearly one-fifth of consumers now list the environment as their main motivator for healthy and sustainable eating – a significant increase from 2020 – research from IGD reveals. At the same time, as many as 77% of shoppers have increased or are thinking about increasing their fruit and vegetable intake, according to the study. The research shows shoppers are increasingly looking to adopt more healthy and sustainable diets, with 58% open to changing their eating habits. The study also found there has been a rise in people eating meat only twice a week or less. Mark Little, Director of Health and Sustainability at IGD, said: “From effective marketing and product placement to meal planning and recipe inspiration, there are lots of really practical actions businesses can take to help make sure consumers continue to shift towards healthy and sustainable diets.”

Announcing the changes, Chancellor Rishi Sunak said: “We are increasing the National Living Wage next year by 6.6%, to £9.50 an hour. For a full-time worker, that’s a pay rise worth over £1,000, and it will benefit over two million of the lowest-paid workers in the country.”

GroceryAid’s annual Sporting Lunch made a return last month and raised over £633,000 for industry colleagues in need of support. The annual Sporting Lunch made a return for GroceryAid at Grosvenor House in London last month, attended by over 1,200 colleagues from 198 companies. Sporting celebrities at the event included Mike Tindall MBE, Sir Geoff Hurst MBE, Helen Glover, Kate Richardson-Walsh, James Haskell and
Sir Alistair Cook MBE. “We are delighted to have raised such a phenomenal amount of money and grateful for the support of companies throughout the industry,” said Steve Barnes, GroceryAid CEO. “Demand for our services is accelerating rapidly. Industry charity GroceryAid has confirmed that next year’s official GroceryAid Day will be Tuesday 26th April 2022and is asking all Budgens retailers to save the date and get involved in raising awareness off the charity and in raising much needed funds to support industry colleagues in need. The theme for next year’s GroceryAid Day will be “Let’s Talk GroceryAid” and a key goal is to raise awareness of the charity’s free welfare services to make sure that as many people as possible in the independent retailing sector know that help is there for them if they need it. Last year over 200 businesses in the trade took part in GroceryAid Day and helped spread the word to millions of people through company engagement. In 2021 alone, GroceryAid has helped over 20,000 colleagues with emotional, practical and financial support, but there are still some colleagues in the independent retailing industry that need to know about the FREE support available to them. To register your interest in taking part, email groceryaidday@groceryaid. org.uk and to find out more and find some tips and hints on how to get involved, visit www.groceryaid.co.uk

Retailer profile: Dipan Patel
Healthy ambitions Dipan Patel’s bright and airy Budgens in Camberwell has only been open a matter of months but is already proving to be smash-hit with local shoppers who are keen to embrace its focus on cleaner living. “We knew that all the extra space would allow us to go big on fresh and to our minds Budgens was the only brand that would have allowed us to do that to the standard that we wanted.” Dipan Patel, Budgens Camberwell
When Dipan Patel (pictured above, left) first stepped into the vast empty retail space of a new mixed-use development in Camberwell, he knew at once that this was the place he would open his second store and let his true convenience retailing ambitions fly. At 4,500 sq ft, Dipan’s newly-opened Budgens store has already made its mark on the local Camberwell community with its vast and impressive fresh produce offer, but also with its array of innovative surprise touches and keen focus on heathy, sustainable living.
18 Your Budgens November 21.indd 18
“We’d been looking for a new site for some years but never found anything that fitted the bill,” Dipan explains. “But then we found this site and knew it was the one we’d been waiting for. “A number of things grabbed my attention. For one, it’s well over double the size of our first store: large enough that we can have some fun and do something new. “I’m very keen to try and offer something different from the same old small store format that we are all so used to in central London. Volume 11: December 2021 10/12/2021 17:45:17
Retailer profile: Dipan Patel
“Larger format stores are much harder to come by and that space, if you can get hold of it, offers such a great opportunity to be more experimental, push the boundaries and change the way shoppers think about convenience retailing. “There are a couple of supermarkets of a similar size not too far away but they are just big boxes and our goal here was to be the total opposite of a big box which is frankly boring and always leaves customers hunting.” Having converted the family’s first store to a Budgens a few years ago, there was never any doubt in Dipan’s mind that the new Camberwell store would also front the fascia. “We knew that all the extra space would really allow us to go big on fresh and to our minds Budgens is the only brand that would have really allowed us to do that to the standard that we wanted,” he explains. “Our fresh range is huge, we stock pretty much everything that is available from Budgens allowing our shoppers to do a full weekly shop here and many of them do. “We are busy throughout the day with shoppers coming in to do big shops or popping in for a coffee to go but it’s evenings that sales really peak. “Between 6pm and 8pm we always get a rush of shoppers coming in for the evening meal solutions and drinks. “We also do a good food to go trade at lunch time including hot and cold options such as steak slices and sandwiches as-well-as some more unusual fresh options from independent suppliers such as Yuzu who provide us with a fresh sushi offer every day. “The Yuzu offer was actually inspired by my fellow Budgens retailer Andrew Thornton who put it in his Islington Volume 11: December 2021 Your Budgens November 21.indd 19

store a couple of years ago and now it’s doing really well for us too. The quality is exceptional, I eat it for lunch most days so you can take my word for it!”
“We have a large frozen offer from The Brook but we also have a vegan bay in our chilled section and a very large one within ambient.”
And Andrew Thornton isn’t the only Budgens retailer to have provided Dipan with some range inspiration. Sussex retailer David Knight also introduced him to the frozen plantbased ready meal brand The Brook.
He continues: “Health Foods are also doing so well, things like protein powders, plant-based powders, keto powders, shoppers can’t seem to get enough of those.”
“I was very clear from the start that healthy living and vegan plant-based options would play a big role in this store,” says Dipan. “Shoppers are increasingly demanding more healthy options and to my mind it’s the right direction to be going in. Volume 11: December 2021 Your Budgens November 21.indd 21
“It bodes well because as soon as the festive season is over I plan to do a very strong push on healthy, vegan and vegetarian food. “I want us to become known for our vegan and healthy offer and I want to play a role in changing shoppers’ behaviour and helping them to live
healthier lives and not just crowding them with sweets and chocolates,” he adds. Another key area of the store that is already resonating well with shoppers, and to Dipan’s mind offers significant opportunities for growth, is its ‘Zero Waste’ offer. The store currently offers more than 60 different refillable lines from its smart ‘Unpacked’ bay with take-up growing week on week. “Shoppers just love it!” Dipan says, “and I think it communicate the right message to customers about the direction that we as a business want to go in.
21 10/12/2021 17:45:20
Retailer profile: Dipan Patel
“If it was possible to do we’d have all of our products plastic free but it’s not possible yet and also customers do still want a certain level of convenience. “However, with a zero-waste section you are still setting the standard, setting the tone and telling your customers where you would like that store to be. “The hope then is that they will work with you to get there and that over time, your store and the way in which shoppers behave becomes more sustainable. “We do offer paper bags but a growing number of shoppers are now bringing in their own containers and I expect that to grow over the coming months as more and more people embrace the concept more fully. “After all, this isn’t supposed to be a pick and mix, it’s supposed to be about sustainable living.” Other features which help to set the store apart include an impressive drinks to go offer, including F’Real Milkshakes, Tango Ice Blast, and Costa Coffee. “These three options work really well together to improve the store’s overall margin and keep shoppers coming in throughout the day,” Dipan adds. Another range which is more than pulling its weight in terms of profits is craft beers which, already account for more than a quarter of the store’s entire BWS profitability. “Craft beers are such a great area for retailers to tap into and achieve really good margins and great rates of sale and it’s an area that I certainly plan to grow further here” Dipan says. “We don’t need to race to the bottom on price we don’t need to compete with the supermarkets, we can just stock local stuff that people want with 30, 40 and even 50% margins.

“It’s also a cracking category to get behind at Christmas as craft ales are an excellent gifting category.
“I personally don’t know of any convenience retailers who are doing anything like that and I’d like to be the first.
“Further down the line we may look to introduce the craft into our ‘Unpacked’ refill section and offer craft on tap but not in a ready to drink format – I’d like to offer a proper refill format using real craft beer growlers that we could put under pressure so that shoppers could take the bottles home with the product remaining nice and fizzy for a good amount of time.
“We all drink and we all need to live more sustainably and I think that if we give people the opportunity to do away with all the cans and the bottles they will embrace it.

“Having the space to try new and innovative things like that is just such a luxury, I feel so lucky that we have it.
• Dipan Patel is no stranger to the world of convenience retailing having been brought up in the family business established by his father Nayan Patel many years ago. • Dipan became a full-time retailer in 2010 when he took on the running of the family’s original convenience store (now a 1,500ft Budgens) in Crystal Palace. • At the start of 2021 Dipan spotted an opportunity to open a second much larger store within a newbuild mixed use development in Camberwell and the store you see today was born.

“We’ve been trading for three months now and I still get a thrill every morning that I walk in, that sense of space and airiness is just wonderful.” The space has also allowed Dipan to have fun with his zoning, creating clearly defined departments with eye-catching American-inspired neon signage. “With a store of this size you have to be so careful how you zone everything if you want to avoid the ‘big box’ look and shoppers constantly asking you where things are,” he says. “We’ve had fun with it, using cool illuminated signs and different textures and finishes around the store to make it really clear to shoppers where the Volume 11: December 2021 Your Budgens November 21.indd 25
different zones are – while the addition of new and exciting ranges such as American confectionery, sushi, health foods and so on creates further splashes of interest as they walk around. “When you build a store like this, you really want shoppers to walk around and browse, you want them to take their time, because the more time they take, generally the bigger the basket. “If you are smart with the layout and have enough visual differentiators around the store, it becomes really obvious where things are and in fact we receive far fewer questions, almost none, in this large store about where certain products are located, compared
to our smaller store. “It just flows really nicely, shoppers understand where they need to go and enjoy themselves as they go around.” That enjoyment, as Dipan explains, is clear to see, in fact, it’s written all over their faces. “When people walk in the first thing they do is smile, and that smile gets bigger as they walk the store and see the vegan ranges, the fresh sushi, the Zero Waste. “It’s such a pleasure to watch them discover the store and so satisfying to see that they seem to love it as much as we do.”

Welcome to The Sussex Grocer
When a retail unit in the affluent Sussex village of Steyning became available, Budgens retailer David Knight knew it would be a perfect fit for his expanding business.
Some things are just meant to be. Retail space is hard to come by in the West Sussex village of Steyning, but when the owner of a good-sized property approached Budgens retailer David Knight to ask if he was interested in taking it over, he knew it would be a perfect fit both geographically and for his growing Knight’s Budgens brand. “The store is near to our other stores at Hassocks and Henfield, so I had known about it for a while already,” explains David. “The previous owner had created the concept of an independent High Street farm shop with a café, and the café operation had become the bigger part Volume 11: December 2021 Your Budgens November 21.indd 27
of the business over time. So when the lockdown happened, the business took a hit and it meant that he was looking to exit. He approached us about a possible sale, and I thought it was just too good an opportunity to miss.” David eventually took over the Steyning store in April 2021, and closed it immediately to refit it as a Budgens store along the lines of his other two stores in Hassocks and Henfield. All 22 members of staff at the old business were temporarily moved to work in the Henfield store so they could be trained on the Knight’s Budgens processes. The store reopened in June with one subtle change to the branding. While
still recognisably a Budgens store, the biggest name on the fascia is The Sussex Grocer. The refit involved expanding the store to 2,700sq ft, converting the former café and kitchen area into sales space. “We wanted to make the store as large as possible,” says David. “It’s quite long and thin in shape so the grocery shelving has to be very narrow. The stock room is upstairs and we have plenty of storage space, but replenishment of the shelves is harder than in our other stores.” The wooden floor and many of the timber fixtures were retained to keep

means we don’t need to focus on any value messaging.”
In came Tango ice Blast and F’Real as part of a dedicated food to go station. “These have been incredibly popular,” says David. “Coffee has also worked very well. There are lots of cafes in the village but most of them are not really set up for takeaway sales.”
“We tailored our range so we could be strong in categories where the other competition is weaker, such as home baking, branded biscuits and premium cereals.
The store already had two Cook freezers, but David upweighted this offer to five units, as well as adding a vegan ready meal offer from Brook, which has been a success in Hassocks. “We had a lot of range decisions to make as part of the refit,” recalls David. “We went for more premium items than we would normally do, and I’ve been slightly surprised just how successful the premium and local products have been. It seems like any product that is produced in Sussex will be preferred to a branded alternative in all sorts of categories – gin, wine, confectionery. It
Strong sales in the grocery range have been another pleasant surprise.
“Our spirits offer is also something we have focused on, and we have a strong range of specialist rum, gin and vodka. Locally-produced Ditchling Gin is really popular.” While the expectations for Steyning were of older, affluent shoppers, David has noticed this has changed since the store opened. “The store had a reputation of being expensive before, which probably put some people off, but we now have a school run rush at around 3pm, and we see a lot more young families shopping here than did before, in the early afternoon and at the weekend too. “The Budgens offer for fresh food is so important,” he continues. “The range, the quality and the viability of regular deliveries are so important to the consistency of our offer, and we have always received so much good advice on fresh food from the team at Budgens.” Although the product range is highly premium, David has been able to reduce prices on many local lines where Knight’s already had an existing relationship with the supplier. “We have continued to work with around 85% of the local suppliers that were already in the store,” he explains. “The
only times we didn’t continue was when we already had an existing relationship with another local supplier for that product. “For the suppliers we were working with already, we were able to introduce them into a third outlet in a new location, and for the new suppliers we have also been able to incorporate them into our other two stores, so it means that lots of local suppliers were able to grow their business through us, which is very pleasing.” Many of the new supplier contacts that David made through the acquisition of the store at Steyning were in the horticultural category.

Retailer CV:
• David Knight is a former Budgens Head Office employee. • His first venture into retailing was to acquire a previously company-owned Budgens store in Hassocks, West Sussex, in 2008. • He subsequently took over a further outlet in Henfield, before acquiring the Steyning store earlier this year.
“There is a garden area at the side of the store which we kept on,” he says “We made it slightly smaller and changed the access point, but on the whole we thought it was a space we could make good use of. “As well as seasonal plants all year round, we also use it to display solid fuel in the winter and charcoal for barbecues in the summer. We also have a display at the front of the store, so I am looking to work with a local florist to create some attractive bouquets.” The store is also designed to be as environmentally-friendly as possible, in line with the demands of local shoppers. Volume 11: December 2021 Your Budgens November 21.indd 31
“About 80% of our fruit and veg is sold loose, to minimise plastic where possible,” explains David. “The packaging we use is all vegware, and our bags are compostable. And the heating in the store is all provided by heat recovery from the refrigeration units.” The store also features an ‘Unwrapped’ fixture, offering packaging-free loose products dispensed from mini hoppers. “We have the same offer in our Hassocks store and it’s worked really well in Steyning too,” explains David. “The snacking and confectionery lines are the ones that do best. The key is to make sure that it works out cheaper
for the shopper to buy snacks, nuts and cereals this way compared to the packaged equivalent. “Our demographic loves the idea, and we’re very pleased with how it’s going.” And that goes for the performance of the store as a whole, too. “We’ve tripled the business of the previous store, we retained all the team members that worked here before, and we have added some more as well,” he adds. “We are on course with our business plan, and we are hoping to keep growing in line with our expectations over the next few years.”

THE STORY SO FAR...
Sustainability is undoubtedly one of the most important challenges we all face today. No-one can have failed to notice the media coverage around the climate crisis and sustainability – and everyone has a role to play. Booker has embraced this challenge by launching a brand new set of commitments to ensure that the business is doing the right thing and better serving customers, communities and the planet. With the launch of Better Trolley For A Better Planet, Booker is trying to do their bit.
BUILDING ON SUCCESS
Better Trolley is building upon Booker’s existing achievements and represents a change in the way that Booker operates and a commitment for the good of customers, communities and the planet. Booker’s Head of Sustainability, Catherine Marston explains: “Better Trolley is a commitment to do our part to reduce the climate crisis and keep the global warming temperature below the 1.5 degree increase. As part of
Volume 11: December 2021 Your Budgens November 21.indd 39
The Better Trolley For A Better Planet initiative is Booker’s new commitment, however Booker has already been extremely active for over 12 years in reducing its carbon footprint and those of its customers. Here are just a few highlights: Booker is the only wholesaler to hold four Carbon Trust standards, covering carbon emissions, waste, water and zero waste to landfill. Booker has held the Carbon Trust standard for emissions for 12 years and during that time we have saved almost 14,000 tonnes of carbon – the equivalent of a family car being driven 44 million miles. l LED lighting has been installed in over 160 branches and four distribution centres, saving enough power to run 64 average Booker branches for a full year. l Equivalent of over six million meals donated to local charities last year, an increase of 165% on the previous year. l 7m litres of used cooking oil have been recycled into bio fuel and used in Booker’s own HGV fleet of vehicles this year. l Only certified RSPO sustainable palm oil is used in own brand products.

the process for preparing the Better Trolley programme, we reviewed everything – literally everything that we do.” It’s worth pointing out, however, that while Better Trolley represents a new change in how Booker approaches its sustainability practices, enormous progress has already been made in the last 10 or 12 years. Booker remains the only UK wholesaler to have achieved four Carbon Trust Standards in Carbon Emissions, Waste, Water and Zero Waste to Landfill and is also the only wholesaler to have held the Carbon Standard for 12 consecutive years. That has delivered absolute carbon emissions savings - despite the business having increased sales by £2.6bn. Almost 14,000 tonnes of CO2 have been saved in 12 years, the equivalent to a family car being driven for 44 million miles, and LED lighting has been installed in over 160 business centres and four distribution centres, saving enough power to run 64 average Booker branches for a full year. Only certified RSPO sustainable palm oil is used in own brand products and Booker has already committed to ensuring that all own brand packaging will be sustainable by 2025.
BOOKER SERVING OUR CUSTOMERS, COMMUNITIES AND THE PLANET A LITTLE BETTER EVERYDAY Among its many commitments as part of the Better Trolley For A Better Planet initiative are the following product principles: l Net zero emissions by 2035 l Zero emission vans by 2030 l 100% cage free eggs by 2025
Volume 11: December 2021 Your Budgens November 21.indd 41
“Better Trolley is a commitment to do our part to reduce the climate crisis. As part of the process we reviewed everything – literally everything that we do.” Catherine Marston, head of Sustainability
CONCLUSION
The Better Trolley For A Better programme marks a change in the way that Booker operates and will have positive impacts for all: customers, communities and the planet. Catherine Marston concludes: “Better Trolley is a powerful set of commitments from Booker that will have a hugely positive impact for our many customers. It will help them reduce their own carbon footprint, improve the offer they are able to make to their consumers, save money and grow profits. “We have been on a vital sustainability journey for over a decade, but Better Trolley marks a new and important change – and one that we are confident will benefit all of our customers and most importantly, the planet.”

Four pillars What will Better Trolley mean for the future? The programme is built on four pillars: 1 Improve Supply – Climate and Nature 2 Healthy & Sustainable Diets 3 End Waste 4 Community & Human Rights Each of these pillars breaks down into actions in all major operational areas and Better Trolley encompasses more than just sustainability issues. It also embraces healthier eating and community and people issues. Not only will Better Trolley help Booker reduce its carbon footprint and deliver a better business, it will also help retailers do the same.
3 End Waste To reduce harmful waste, all board will be sustainably sourced, packaging will be reduced to a minimum, recycled content will be increased where possible and Booker will continue to remove non recyclable materials. Additionally, no edible food will be wasted and food waste in Booker’s own operations will be halved by 2030.
Volume 11: December 2021 Your Budgens November 21.indd 43
1 Climate & Nature Among the commitments that Booker is making as part of Better Trolley is to decarbonise its operations and has set the ambitious goal of being net zero by 2035. Similarly, the van delivery fleet will be fully zero emissions by 2030. Refrigeration and heating will also be de-carbonised. When sourcing own-brand products, Booker is committing to zero deforestation, sustainably sourced fish and agricultural products and certified Red Tractor/Bord Bia UK meat and dairy products. All eggs will be from cage-free hens by 2025.
2 Healthy & Sustainable Diets An increased range of plant-based products will be made available and Booker is committing to making products healthier.
4 Community & Human Rights A fundamental element of Better Trolley is committing to respectful treatment of all colleagues and ethical sourcing of high risk products such as coffee, tea, cocoa, bananas and prawns.

Your Budgens: Tobacco Club
More reasons to join
the
club
Seven tobacco products from JTI and six new lines from Imperial Tobacco are now available as part of the Budgens Tobacco Club, which gives you enhanced profit margins while at the same time driving extra footfall to your store.
WHY JOIN THE BUDGENS TOBACCO CLUB? Reduced wholesale prices Competitive retail prices Enhanced PORs of a minimum 2% above standard Wide range of participating brands
Budgens retailers have for years benefited from being in the Tobacco Club, enjoying a substantial discount on cost prices in return for a commitment to sell products at the recommended retail price. Competitive retail pricing enables you drive footfall locally, as your reputation for offering value spreads by word of mouth, but the beauty of the Tobacco Club is that this doesn’t come at the expense of profitability, because participating retailers who agree to sell at the competitive RSPs benefit from improved wholesale prices, with a net enhancement to profit of a minimum of 2% additional POR per sale. Now there are more reasons than ever before to join the Budgens Tobacco Club, as a number of new lines have been added to the range of skus available at reduced wholesale prices. Major supplier JTI is now part of the scheme and added seven new lines to the programme across big brands Benson & Hedges, Sovereign, and Sterling. The new lines include Benson & Hedges Blue in Kings Size and Superkings formats at a reduced WSP of £77.05 (10x20s) – representing a saving over the standard WSP of £2.77. The packs are required to be sold at the RSP of £10, and at these prices deliver an enhanced POR of 7.5%, compared to 5.5% at the standard WSP and RSP outside of the scheme. Also new to the Tobacco Club are Sovereign Blue in King Size and Superkings formats. These lines also have a similar saving of £2.77 per outer (10x20s) when purchased at the Tobacco Club WSP of £77.05. At the
44 Your Budgens November 21.indd 44
RSP of £10, these products also have an enhanced POR of 7.5%. Boosted profitability is also available on three hand-rolling tobacco skus under the Sterling brand. Sterling 3-in-1 kits (5x30g) have a WSP of £53.51 for Budgens retailers in the Tobacco Club – a saving of £1.64. At the RSP of £14 per pack, this represents an increase in the POR to 8.3%. And the good news keeps on coming for Budgens retailers. The Tobacco Club has been further boosted by the addition of six further lines from Imperial Tobacco. Richmond Original in King Size and Superkings styles, Richmond Green Filter Superkings and Embassy Signature Gold King Size are now also available to order at Tobacco Club special prices and enhanced PORs. Volume 11: December 2021 10/12/2021 17:45:51
Your Budgens: Tobacco Club
Also added to the scheme are Players RYO + Papers packs in both 30g and 50g pouch sizes, with appealing PORs of more than 11%. With the addition of these new products, there are now 23 big brand lines available at enhanced Tobacco Club prices, with the new lines joining skus from brands such as Players, L&B, Carlton and Gold Leaf already in the scheme.
The additional profit for each participating retailer could be worth up to £6,000 per year. All you have to do is ensure your RSPs are set at the stated levels. The lower WSPs will be charged on invoices – there are no credits necessary. All prices are correct at time of going to print. Speak to your RDM today to sign up to Tobacco Club, and start benefiting from lower WSPs on a wide range of key tobacco products straight away.

Your Budgens: Party Season
Bring the party to the people The Christmas and New Year period provides a great opportunity for Budgens retailers to fulfil the needs of local shoppers wanting to stage a celebration, through both instore offers and home delivery services. Christmas is coming, so it’s time to party. All the indications are that this Christmas and New Year period will, compared to last year at least, see larger and more frequent in-home celebrations among family and friends. This creates additional sales and profit opportunities for Budgens stores to take advantage.
flavour styles and cocktailmaking for entertaining in the home.
The first thing is to make sure you have an appropriate range of products and pack formats for when the party season swings into action.
Beer is always a winner for a party, and with larger packs offering better value, think in terms of 12, 15 and 18-packs of cans and glass bottles.
Premium spirits are all the rage in the current market, and there is a strong and still growing shopper interest in quality brands, new
And the nation’s love affair with Prosecco is still ongoing, with huge sales expected of the Italian fizz this Christmas.
Volume 11: December 2021 Your Budgens November 21.indd 47
So, to maximise the opportunity, stock up on premium brands such as AU Vodka, Ciroc and Gordon’s, including a number of the flavour variants and plenty of mixers and other ingredients for cocktail-making.
Backlit spirits bring the fixture to life. Bulk stacks are a great way to catch shoppers’ attention. Highlight value using all available POS material. Use Printshop to create greatlooking POS for your own deals. Make sure your opening hours are clearly displayed. Use social media to promote special offers and home delivery services.

HOME DELIVERY
Sales opportunities for the party season don’t end at the front door of your shop, there are also great opportunities to increase sales beyond the store with a home delivery service. A host of third-party apps and digital providers such as Uber Eats and Jisp are now available to help retailers connect with hungry and thirsty shoppers who don’t want the party to end just because they are running out of drinks at home.
Many of the delivery service apps offer exclusive terms to Budgens retailers thanks to central negotiations on behalf of the larger group. And Booker has a solution for Budgens retailers concerned about managing delivery drivers or even the carbon footprint of a home delivery, as preferential terms are also available for Eskuta electric scooters – a modern and effective solution for the last mile delivery.

Make a fresh start for 2022! There’s no better time than the early New Year period to take a fresh look at your store to make sure you are continuing to give the right impression to your shoppers throughout the year to come. Talking Shop offers some tips on where to start. Once the hectic Christmas and New Year season is behind us, January is traditionally a much quieter trading month for retail businesses. So it is the perfect time to take some time out of the day-to-day running of the business and take a fresh look at your store. One great way to do that is by taking a step back and trying to see your store the way your shoppers do, then drawing up a list of what you’re doing well, and where there could be room for improvement. That could be as simple as a spring clean, a spruce up and a lick of paint or it could mean instigating a new programme of online staff training or checking that all hygiene, health and safety documentation and rules are in place – but there’s no better time to do it than in the lull after the festive storm.
54 Your Budgens November 21.indd 54
With long hours and seven-day opening it can be difficult to find the time to stand back and take an objective look at your business – but time spent in this way is invariably hugely productive and beneficial. So why not set aside a day or two or take a few hours out to have a look around your store and start making a list of all the little jobs that need done to help get the store back into tip top condition? The big question is where to begin, which is why Talking Shop is here to help and to offer you some tips and advice on helping you get 2022 off to a flyer.

EXTERIOR
The best place to start on your store audit is outside as that’s the first thing new and existing shoppers see when they visit your store – and first impressions count: l Is the signage neat, tidy and clean? l Are all posters up to date and in good condition? l Has the exterior been swept and is it litter-free? l Do the exterior walls need fresh paint or professional cleaning? l Are the windows clean, tidy and free of clutter? l Do you have a bin available for shoppers?
INTERIOR
Once your shoppers step inside, what is the first thing they see? Does it make a good impression and is it how you want your store to be perceived? After that, take a good walk around the store, just the way a shopper would, and make sure that everything is just as you want it. Ask yourself: l Are the floors clean and clear? l Do all the lights work? l Is the ceiling clean and free of marks? l Are the shelves clean, neat and well merchandised? l Is there any old POS that’s dirty or no longer relevant? l Is all in-store signage accurate and in good condition? l Are all shelf edge labels and price tickets clean, tidy and up to date?
Volume 11: December 2021 Your Budgens November 21.indd 55
HEALTH, SAFE AND LEGAL
With the basics dealt with, it’s time to move onto more complex areas. Health, safe and legal are massively important issues and no more so than if you operate a hot food to go counter. Areas to pay particular attention to are those with specific hygiene challenges like milk chillers and hot and cold food storage and preparation areas. l Is the milk chiller spotlessly clean? l Have any hot food storage units been deep cleaned recently? l Have all chillers been serviced as specified by the manufacturer? l Are your temperature checks up to date, accurate and within safe guidelines? l Has the shelving in the soft drinks cabinet been thoroughly cleaned to remove sticky residues? l What about your food prep areas? It is a legal requirement that these must be cleaned/sanitised then left for 30 seconds before using again. l Is your EHO certificate displayed as it should be? l Is your CleanPro+ manual available to staff, and are they aware of it? l For products that you yourself package for sale, is the ingredient labelling fully compliant with Natasha’s Law?

STORE TEAMS
Clearly, one of the most important factors on how shoppers judge your store is how the staff are turned out. Some basic questions to ask yourself include: l Are the uniforms grubby or past their best? l Do the staff require a little pep talk to ensure they greet every shopper with a hello and a smile? l Are staff that handle food wearing the appropriate aprons, bibs, gloves and hair nets?
STORAGE AREAS While the shopper-facing parts of the store naturally get the most attention, it’s still vital that all storage areas are kept in good shape to avoid accidents, hygiene issues and out of date stock. Ask yourself: l Are the floor areas of any store spaces clean, tidy and triphazard free? l Has all shelving been checked recently to ensure it’s safe and sound? l Has all the stock in the storage room(s) been rotated properly to avoid out of date stock and wastage? l Do all of the lights in the storage spaces work? l Could re-configuring the stockroom make re-stocking of the shopfloor easier and quicker? y t i n u Comm
matters
The tenth edition of the ACS Local Shop Report shows how convenience retailers have overcome many challenges and continued to improve their service to shoppers. Retailers are investing in their businesses with modernisation strategies such as social media and contactless payment, but are also working longer hours, explains James Lowman of the ACS.
In 2012, we launched the first edition of our Local Shop Report, looking at the stores operating in the convenience sector, the retailers running those stores, and the people working in and living around them. The report has grown over the last decade to become a comprehensive summary of our sector, now in its 10th edition, following local shops through significant legislation changes, increased consumer demand, mergers, acquisitions, Brexit, and of course a global pandemic. We use the Local Shop Report every day to inform our conversations with government, the media and the industry.
Social media engagement for retailers has always been a bit of a slow burner, but this year has seen a significant jump in the percentage of stores that are active on platforms like Facebook, with more than one in ten now reaching younger customers on TikTok. We’ve also seen a continued growth in the number of stores accepting contactless payment.
Working hours have also shifted significantly over the last year, although we expect this is a temporary change rather than a permanent trend. Colleagues in convenience stores worked a combined 9.6m hours over the last year, an increase of over a million on the IF YOU year before. At all times, but especially this WOULD LIKE TO year, we cannot understate the importance GET INVOLVED IN THE of the 392,000 colleagues keeping local POLITICAL WORK OF ACS shops going, keeping the shelves stocked CALL for customers and going the extra mile for local people.
So what does this year’s Local Shop Report tell us about how retailers and their colleagues have fared over the last 12 months? The first thing that stands out is that despite the huge disruption faced by the entire world throughout the pandemic and even now with supply chain shortages, OR LOG ON TO Over the last decade, the Local Shop the sector has remained remarkably www.acs.org.uk Report has demonstrated to Government consistent. Guest Column: Sustainability
The right thing for our business and for the planet A new set of principles on product sourcing, waste reduction and respect for human rights will reduce Booker’s carbon footprint and also that of Budgens retailers, making a better business for all. Booker’s Sustainability Manager Catherine Marston explains how the Better Trolley For A Better Planet initiative will see the wholesaler become carbon net zero by 2035, alongside a wide range of other commitments on sustainability.
I am very proud to be part of the Better Trolley For A Better Planet initiative, a new set of commitments to reduce the carbon footprint of the Booker operation and to deliver a better business for the future. The benefits of this will impact positively on every link in the chain from our suppliers to our retail customers and all the way to the shoppers purchasing products in your stores. Sustainability is a vitally important issue, and one that has been uppermost in everyone’s mind in recent months, but at Booker we have been on a major sustainability journey for over a decade. Booker remains the only UK wholesaler to have achieved four Carbon Trust Standards in Carbon Emissions, Waste Water and Zero Waste to Landfill, and is also the only wholesaler to have held the Carbon Standard for 12 consecutive years. Almost 14,000 tonnes of CO2 have been saved in 12 years, and LED lighting has been installed in over 160 business centres and four distribution centres – saving enough power to run 64 average-sized Volume 11: December 2021 Your Budgens November 21.indd 71
Booker branches for a full year. However, despite this success, Better Trolley marks a new and important change – and one that we are confident will benefit all of our customers and, most importantly, the planet. It is a root and branch overhaul of how Booker works and we reviewed everything – literally everything that we do. It is based on four key pillars – to improve supply from the perspective if climate and nature; to encourage healthy and sustainable diets; to end waste; and to always respect community values and human rights. Each of these pillars breaks down into actions in all major operational areas. Among the commitments that Booker is making as part of Better Trolley is to become carbon next zero by 2035, with the delivery fleet at zero emissions by 2030. When sourcing own-label products, Booker is committing to zero
deforestation, sustainably sourced fish and agricultural products and certified Red Tractor/Bord Bia UK meat and dairy products. All eggs will be from cage-free hens by 2025, and a fundamental element of Better Trolley is committing to respectful treatment of all colleagues, and ethical sourcing of high-risk products such as coffee, tea, cocoa, bananas and prawns. To reduce harmful waste, all board will be sustainably sourced, packaging will be reduced to a minimum, recycled content will be increased where possible and Booker will continue to remove non-recyclable materials. Additionally, no edible food will be wasted and food waste in Booker’s own operations will be halved by 2030. Taken together, Better Trolley is a powerful set of commitments from Booker that will have a hugely positive impact for our many retail customers. It will help them reduce their own carbon footprint, improve the offer they are able to make to their consumers, save money and grow profits.
