It’s a privilege to present to you this third update on our Reaching a World of Kids (RWOK) initiative in Young Life!

In this report, we focus on three points of growth and movement in the mission: our Los Angeles Initiative; the construction of new buildings at Saranac and Lake Champion; and our Developing Global Leaders program abroad.

We have countless reasons to give thanks! But I’d like to start with one: I’m thankful for faithful friends like you.

Thank you for helping us reach a world of kids with God’s love. Because of friends like you, we are moving forward with momentum on many fronts. I hope you are encouraged by this report.

L.A. Initiative This past spring, L.A. received the largest gift in its history by way of a $450,000 matching grant to raise “new money to support new ministry.” Our staff have been busy working on the grant and have already raised over $280,000 of new money, which is beginning to fuel new ministry in Los Angeles, including the hiring of additional staff and volunteers in Greater Pasadena, West Valley, Mt. Baldy, Hollywood, Burbank and South Bay — all areas recognized as having growth potential over the next two years. We are excited about the newly formed “Downtown” Executive L.A. Board, which will focus on helping our Young Life areas connect at the highest levels in Los Angeles to accomplish RWOK success. We are also excited about our new committee focused on South Central L.A., which is an extremely urban part of the city.

One of our biggest challenges is the large, disproportionate number of kids who live in extreme urban environments. Through RWOK, we hope to initiate unprecedented growth in these environments and are already off to a great start by adding staff and funding to this part of the city.

Developing Global Leaders Program Young Life has traditionally benefited from having great university student leaders. In the developing world, however, university-aged leaders are often lost because they either cannot afford school or work full-time jobs, giving them very little time to serve with Young Life.

For an average of $230 a month, Young Life can pay for a student’s school tuition, books, supplies, ministry expenses, Young Life training, and provide a small stipend.

The program also provides spiritual mentoring. In the developing world, it is rare to find an older person partnering with youth in ministry and mentorship. The mentoring element provides ways to involve the older, wiser generation in the ministry movements often led by the younger generation, as well as a connection point between Young Life and the local church.

The Developing Global Leaders program provides the opportunity for higher education and reduces the barriers for university students to serve in Young Life ministry, which presents a tremendous opportunity to change the course of hundreds of young leaders’ lives. With its emphasis on recruiting and training new volunteer leaders, it not only pours a deep and wide foundation to create sustainable long-term leadership for Young Life’s international ministry, but also ensures a pipeline of future Young Life staff and volunteer leaders to reach a world of kids.

2012-2013 School Year: 100 New students 4 New countries (Panama, Honduras, India, and the Palestinian Territories) 84 Expected graduations this school year This is an exciting year because it signifies the first year we will have graduates who have been in the program for the full four years. For those who have graduated from the DGL program, 52 percent are women. For developing countries, this is significant because in the past, women in this context have been suppressed not only in their culture but also in the church.

However, Young Life believes that men and women together reflect the wholeness of Christ and that God calls and gifts both men and women to serve at every level in this mission. We believe that by equipping and empowering some of the best and brightest women in the developing world, we have a unique opportunity to not only provide future role models for the next generation of female leaders but to have an impact on cultures today.

James Zayzay — Liberia James was that Young Life kid who went to camp and fell in love with Jesus. James accepted Christ at the first camp ever held in Liberia in 2007.“During the quiet time that night at camp, I was sitting in the dark by a palm tree and I began to pray … and I felt like someone [was] telling me in my ears,‘James, this is the r time.’ ” James answered God’s call on his life that day and has been a volunteer with Young Life e for several years. James’ has been chosen as a leader of leaders to start the Global Leaders m m program this fall and will be studying information technology. He says,“I believe this s u scholarship will be an opportunity for me to achieve my educational goals and contribute to my family and country.”

Natalia Nikoryan — Ukraine Natalia’s mother was an alcoholic, and she grew up in an atmosphere of poverty and fighting. When Natalia’s sister fell behind in mental development, their mother put both girls in the worst orphanage in the region where the government sends children with various mental and physical problems. However, even in those dark times, Natalia saw the hand of God at work.“I met the Young Life team in the orphanage … making program, playing games, talking about Jesus and His love.” Natalia now lives at the Young Life clubhouse and says,“God gave me a new home and new friends. But most important for me … now I have a Father, and this is what I was looking for my whole life.” Natalia has been actively serving with Young Life the past few years, has a desire to study biblical counseling, and dreams of developing Capernaum ministries for those with disabilities around Ukraine.

ids Saranac Update Construction and funding for the Guide House project at Young Life’s Saranac Village were completed in May 2012 as camp staff and their families moved in on June 8 to begin the first of three month-long summer assignments. The Guide House was the only building at the camp that had not been renovated since Young Life purchased Saranac in 1969, containing just 11 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms to house the 14 staff members and their families! The new renovation includes improved aesthetics throughout the entire structure, 13 bedrooms, 4.5 bathrooms, a new kitchen, a new toddler room, a new dining room, covered decks, and a larger great room where staff can congregate for Bible studies, prayer, and fellowship after a long day at camp. The Guide House renovation’s total cost was $1.185 million; 90 percent of the funding came from major donors and 10 percent came from Young Life staff. Camp at Saranac remains a profound and life-changing memory for donors and staff, thus lending a hand in their generous giving. As one staff person put it, “I am walking with Christ today as a result of His personal touch received at Saranac.” With more space and updated features, the Guide House really is a home away from home for our assigned teams and their families. By providing this home for staff and volunteers on assigned teams, we are further supporting their ability to share the Gospel in both word and deed. The grand opening celebration for Young Life’s Saranac Village Guide House is slated for August 2012.

Lake Champion Update Also in the works in New York are the new additions to the existing assignment staff house (named Petra) at Young Life’s Lake Champion. The day after the last summer camp staff person departs, ground breaking for the new facility will begin. The exterior will reflect the new camp motif, which is modeled after SharpTop’s and Windy Gap’s assignment staff housing, and includes rock features, wrought iron, gable roofs, and shake shingles, with the interior being comprised of 20 bedrooms, a community area, kitchen with separate dining area, great room with a fireplace, bathroom, separate play room, outside deck, laundry facilities, and an outdoor playground. Total reconstruction cost for Petra is $2.7 million. This project is fully funded through the generosity of one family who has a tremendous heart for our camping program and Lake Champion in particular.
