Young Life was incorporated in 1941 by Jim Rayburn, a seminary student and part-time youth minister in Gainesville, Texas, who wanted to reach out to kids disinterested in church. Rayburn went where kids were and found creative ways to share the love of God with them. His methods continue to transform lives today. Steve Harrison

STEVE HARRISON

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” — John 10:10, NIV

AREA OVERVIEW

Rockford Secondary Schools is home to over 4,000 middle school and high school students. The two middle schools (North Rockford and East Rockford) feed into the Rockford Freshmen Center and eventually Rockford High School — home of the Rockford Rams! Young Life has existed in Rockford since 2014. Over the years, the Young Life team has spent seasons focused strictly on high school students, as well as other seasons focused strictly on middle school students. Due to a number of reasons, we believe Young Life — Rockford has not been able to quite reach its full potential that we so strongly believe is there. But we are so excited for what God has in store ahead!

STEVE’S STORY Although I grew up hearing about Jesus from family and church, I did not truly know what it meant to follow Him. As I went through middle school and high school, I struggled to find what would truly satisfy me. I attempted to find my identity in sports, friends and relationships. After years of striving for these things, I realized none of them gave me the fulfillment I so deeply longed for. It was in my junior year of high school that a Christian mentor entered into my life. He desired to walk alongside me during my high school years. Practically speaking, this looked like getting pizza together after school, him attending my basketball games and him just being a friend who listened and continuously pointed me to Jesus. I recall during the fall of my junior year, he encouraged me to attend a Christian retreat with other kids my age. Initially, I declined. But as he continued to remind me of the opportunity, I eventually relented and signed up. It was on this retreat that I realized my life was not meant to be about me, but about Jesus. As a result of this lesson, I found the satisfaction and life I had been searching for all along. From this weekend on, my life has completely changed. I have now experienced and continue to experience the abundant life that Jesus promises us as we follow Him. I believe it is now my God-given mission and joyful burden (as well as my wife’s) to help as many middle and high school students experience the same life-giving relationship with Jesus that we have.

Currently, we are excited to offer both Young Life (high school) and WyldLife (middle school) to our Rockford community starting fall of 2022! We currently have five leaders and serve approximately 20 kids. We are working diligently to greatly grow our leader base and engage more and more kids in the Rockford community.
