I don't agree because everyone should have something to do and work is very important to people whether they are rich or not.

No, I don't think so. Rassendyll has a lot of money and believes that money is everything. He doesn't take his duties to society seriously.

3. -"To a man like me, opportunities are responsibilities." What do you think Rassendyll means by this sentence?

He means that if an opportunity comes, he takes it but he doesn't look for work or responsibilities.

4. Why do you think the guards at the Ruritanian border stare at Rassendyll and his passport?

They were surprised to see that Rassendyll looked almost exactly like the King.

5. Why do you think the castle was well-defended and had a moat around it?

Perhaps because Michael needed to protect himself well.

6. What kind of person do you think Rudolf Rassendyll is?

He is a person who doesn't care about responsibilities and doesn't take his duties to society seriously. He likes to have an easy life 7. Rassendll's position in society gave him opportunities? Sapt is wiser because he is older and has more experience of life. This helps him to make the right decisions.

11. What kind of things do you think upper-class members in 19h century England did?

I think they liked to have an easy life, travelling and eating good food, without doing anything useful.

12. Where do you think upper-class members in 19th century England get their money from?

Their money might come from investments ‫ استثمارات‬in businesses or from rents ‫ ايجارات‬they collected on land that they owned.

13. If you were Rassendyll, would you have a life of leisure ‫حياة راحة‬ ‫ وترف‬or try to do something useful? Why? I would certainly try to do something useful because life is not worth living ‫ ال تستحق أن تُعاش‬if you just spend it doing nothing.

'Lord' is a title ‫ لقب‬given by the Queen of England to a person as a reward for the good things they have done for their country. Lords usually enjoyed a high position in society as well as political power ‫ سلطة سياسية‬.

Being well-educated and having a lot of money is not enough because a person has to do something useful. Robert realized that his position in society had responsibility. Rudolf Rassendyll only liked to have an easy life and did nothing useful.

He did so because he didn't like to tell people where he went on his travels and to avoid Rose's critical remarks about his being lazy.

21. Robert says that 'writing a book is the best way to get into politics ‫ أفضل طريقة للدخول الي مجال السياسة‬.' What do you think?

I think this is true because when you write a book, people get to know you and you could become a famous person and then it would be easy for you to get into politics.

Perhaps because at that time, Paris was visited by many important people and there were exciting events.

This tells us that he was always away from his people and didn't care about them.

24. When Johann says, 'Sir, have you ever seen our King', what do you think he really means?

He means that Rudolf Rassendyll looks almost exactly like the King of Ruritania.

Perhaps because nobody noticed that he was not the real King. He enjoyed it because people were clapping and cheering him.

31. Why do you think that Fritz and Sapt locked up Johann's mother with the King?

She knew about their plan and she might tell Michael that Rassendyll was pretending to be the King.

32. Why do you think that Sapt told Rassendyll the history of the King's life?

He wanted Rassendyll to play the role of King perfectly without making any mistakes. if Michael discovered their plan, they would be all killed or put in prison.

33. The King used the word 'cousin' when he first met Rassendyll in the forest of Zenda. How do you think that he knew that Rassendyll was a distant cousin?

Sapt talked to the King quietly. He must have told him about Rassendyll's story and about his grandmother, Countess Amelia who married a member of the royal family in Ruritania.

Perhaps because a king should have no double as this might cause problems. People might mistake Rassendyll for the King.

He means it's not Rassendyll's fault to look almost exactly like the King.

He knew it was because Rassendyll's grandmother married one of the Elphbergs.

36. Sapt and Fritz told the King that Rassendyll must not go to the coronation. What do you think might be the problem if Rassendyll went to the coronation?

This might cause problems because Rassendyll looked exactly like the King and people might mistake him for the King.

37. How do you think Michael would react if he saw both Rassendyll and the King at the coronation? Why? Michael wouldn't believe his eyes because Rassendyll looked almost exactly like the King.

Michael was an evil man. He was planning to get rid of his brother so that he could take the crown. He prepared the poisonous cakes which he sent to his brother.

What does this tell us about the King?

This tells us that the King is very interested in food. He even believes that good food is more important than sleep. He prefers eating to action.

40. Do you think it is right to believe that 'good food is more important than sleep'?

No, it isn't because sleep is as important as food. We eat to live, but we don't live to eat.

41. Do you think a man like Rudolf Elphberg can run his country well? Say why? don't think a man like him can run a country well because he is not a man of action. He is only keen on good food and hunting. He doesn't take his duties as a King seriously. He is incapable of making the right decision. He shows lack of wisdom and good judgment.

42. Josef, the servant, gives the cakes to the King at the end of his meal; the King praises his brother Michael, saying, 'Well done, Michael! He knows me well!' What does this tell us about the King?

This tells us that the King is quite unaware of Michael's evil intentions.

Michael was planning to poison him. The King seems to be so naive to believe that his half-brother likes him. This also tells us that he eats more than he needs.

43. Why do you think Rassendyll wasn't as sick as the King after eating the cakes?

Rassendyll ate just one cake, so the poison had little effect on him, but the King ate the cakes hungrily as if they were the first thing he had eaten all day.

44. Unlike Fritz, Sapt proved to be smart and wise. Do you agree or not? Say why.

Fritz suggested telling the people of Strelsau that the King was ill, which was not a good idea because if the King wasn't crowned that day, he would never be King. Sapt asked Rassendyll to pretend to be the King, which 5

seemed to be the perfect solution to the problem. Moreover, Sapt suggested leaving the hunting lodge earlier than planned to avoid being caught or killed by Michael's men.

45. Rassendyll says, 'The King would never forgive me if I ‌' What do you think could be the missing part in this sentence? ''The King would never forgive me if I replaced him/took his place/pretended to be him.'

He means they have to hide the King in the cellar and Rassendyll will pretend to be the King. When Michael's men arrive, Josef will tell them that the hunting lodge is empty. It was their only chance to stop Michael from taking the crown.

I think they could have arrested Michael and put off the coronation until the King got better.

The King was locked in the cellar of the hunting lodge and if Michael's men found him, they would kidnap or kill him. Rassendyll was pretending to be the King and if Michael discovered their plan, they would be all killed or put in prison.

The man looked surprised and Fritz didn't want him to suspect that Rassendyll was not the real King.

50. Do you think it was normal for Rassendyll to feel nervous when they reached the capital?

Yes, I think so. Rassendyll knew he and the others were in danger. He knew that if Michael discovered their plan, they would be all killed or put in prison.

51. When Rassendyll says, 'The King is hungry', what does this tell us about him?

-He is feeling more confident and relaxed. He is acting more like the King.

52. God save both kings.' What do you think Sapt means by this?

He refers to both the King and Rassendyll. Both men were in danger. The King was lying unconscious at the hunting lodge and if Michael's men found him, they would kidnap or kill him. Rassendyll was pretending to be the King and if Michael discovered their plan, they would be all killed or put in prison.

They wouldn't have supported Duke Michael.

54. Do you think Michael was deceiving the poor people by giving them hope for a better future? Why? Yes, I think so. Michael just wanted to be King. He pretended that he cared about poor people only to get their support.

55. Why do you think there was a conflict between rich and poor people in Strelsau? Do you think there could be a war between them?

There was a conflict between them because rich people supported the King and poor people wanted Michael to be King. There could be a war between them unless things changed.

56. Do you think Fritz's idea to tell the people that the King was ill was a good one? Why? /Why not?

I don't think it was a good idea because most of the people in Strelsau were poor and they supported Michael and wanted him to become King.

57. What do you think might have happened if Sapt and Fritz had been poisoned like the King?

It would have been easy for Michael to take the crown and become King.

58. Why do you think that Sapt and Rassendyll left the palace through a secret passage?

They did so to avoid being seen by anyone.

59. Why do you think that Rassendyll remembered little of the coronation?

Rassendyll must have written the story long after he had come back from Ruritania, so he must have forgotten a lot of details./OR: --because there were a lot of people and it was very busy.

60. Why do you think the poor people appreciated Rassendyll's riding alone through the old town?

Because it showed that the King cared about them and trusted them. Before that day, many people didn't even know what the King looked like.

61. Why do you think Rassendyll was keen on getting the poor people to like him more than they liked the Duke?

He wanted people to support the King, not Duke Michael. He hoped that if there was a fight with Michael, people wouldn’t follow the Duke.

62. When the Marshal was asked why he ordered his men to change route, he simply answered that it was better that day. What do you think was the real reason for changing their route?

Perhaps it was a shorter way to the coronation or perhaps the Marshal wanted to prove to the King that he could protect him even when he was among his enemies.

63. Do you agree with Rassendyll that changing the route was the Marshal's plan to test him? Why? / Why not?

I don't agree with him because it was clear that the Marshal thought that Rassendyll was the real King. If he had had any doubts about Rassendyll's identity, he would have done something about that.

64. Why do you think the Marshal hesitated to give orders to his men to ride ahead of Rassendyll?

He knew it was too dangerous for Rassendyll to ride alone in that part of the town where people were loyal to Duke Michael.

65. Rasseendyll said that if he were killed in the old town, Sapt's position would be difficult. Do you agree or not? Say why.

I agree because Sapt was an officer for the King and if anything bad happened to him, Sapt would be responsible for that.

66. Riding alone through the old town was a brave and daring act on the part of Rassendyll. Do you agree or not? Say why?

Yes, it was very brave of him to do so because he knew it was too risky as people there were loyal to Duke Michael and he might have been killed there.

67. What do you think the message, 'All is well' mean?

I think it means that Michael's men kidnapped the King and are hiding him somewhere.

68. How do you think Johann's mother told Michael's men what had happened in the hunting lodge?

The King was in a room inside the cellar and when Michael's men arrived, she must have told them that the King was in that room.

69. Josef was asked to tell Michael's men that the hunting lodge was empty. How do you think Josef was killed?

Michael's men must have searched the hunting lodge and found Johann's mother who told them everything. Perhaps Josef tried to defend the King, so they killed him.

70. What do you think Rassendyll meant when he made a comparison between his white and clean uniform and the old buildings in the old town?

He meant to show the sharp contrast ‫ التنااض الحاا‬between the lives of the rich and those of the poor. He wanted to tell us how much the poor people suffered in that area and how much they needed someone who could help them.

71. Do you think that Antoinette really recognized Rassendyll when she saw him on his way to the coronation? Why? / Why not?

I think she did because her face expression changed.

72. Supposing that Antoinette recognized Rassendyll before the coronation, why do you think that she didn't tell anyone that he wasn't the real King?

Perhaps she knew about Michael's evil plan to kill his half-brother and take the crown. / She saw Rassendyll at the train station when George went to talk to her. She knew that if she told people the truth about him, he would get arrested or killed and she didn't want that to happen.

73. Why do you think the people in the old town were so surprised to see the King (Rassendyll)? What did their comments about his height and skin mean?

Perhaps because they knew that their King trusted them and cared about them. Their comments mean that they had never seen the King before.

74. Why do you think that Sapt was relieved to see Rassendyll alive after riding alone through the old town?

Perhaps because he expected that Rassendyll could be hurt as people there were loyal supporters of Duke Michael.

75. Seeing the paintings of the Duke in the windows of the houses in the old town, Rassendyll knew what they thought of him. What do you think the people there thought of the King?

They thought of him as a man who didn't care about them and their lives.

The King was almost a stranger to them as he had lived most of his life abroad.

People would have asked him where the real King had been.

-It tells us that Rassendyll was a brave and daring man who was willing to take risks to help others.

No, I wouldn't do that. If I were him, I would ride with guards all around me to protect me from people who might hurt me.
