YORK SCHOOL OF ART Welcome to the rejuvenated York School of Art, where a legacy dating back to 1842 meets the aspirations of future artists.

Founded in 1842 as one of Britain’s first provincial art schools, York School of Art nurtured the budding talents of prominent Victorian artists such as Albert Moore (1841-1895), his brother Henry Moore (1831-1895) and Joseph Alfred Terry.

Initially known as York School of Design and situated in Little Blake Street, it moved to Minster Yard six years later and changed name in 1892, following another relocation to Exhibition Square. There, the school was damaged during a World War Two air raid half-a-century later and in 1976, became part of York College at our former Tadcaster Road site. The merger of York College with York Sixth Form College followed in 1999 before the move to our current Sim Balk Lane premises 17 years ago.

In 2024, it felt like the right time to recognise our historical connection to the York School of Art and the historical importance to the City of York for this much-loved institution. The school has a rich history and legacy, and we are pleased to reconnect York College & University Centre with its past in this respect and emphasise our commitment to art education as an institution.

Our York School of Art courses have been firmly established on campus, with students benefitting from the use of our fully-equipped studios and workshops, expert teaching staff and a gallery in which their work and that of guest artists is regularly displayed.

Why study with us?

GREAT FACILITIES We have an array of specialist facilities including: a design studio with pattern cutting tables; Apple Mac suites; pattern CAD room with a Gerber system for digital pattern generation; specialised classrooms; machine room with industrial sewing machines and presses; print room; art gallery space; photography studios, purpose-built prosthetics workshop and hair and make-up studios. Other workshops include metal with foundry for blacksmithing and welding bay; jewellery with a micro-welder and enamelling kilns; wood with an industrial lathe and large benches; ceramics with wheels for throwing and both electric and gas kilns and sculpture room with facilities for plaster, concrete and rubber.

ACCESS TO TUTORS Our small class sizes mean students get more contact time with our expertly trained tutors and receive outstanding student support in and outside of class.

STUDENT UNION The Student Union is run by students, for students, allowing them the chance to raise issues and have a voice. The group also run charity and social events throughout the year.

UNIVERSITY CENTRE Complete with learning zones, group study areas, kitchen and a relaxation zone, providing an area for our Access to Higher Education (HE) and degree students to socialise, relax and eat.

IOT SPECIALIST COLLEGE

With a reputation for inspiring creative minds, you’ll receive teaching from staff who are experienced academic and industry professional tutors with a passion for their subjects.

We’re part of Yorkshire and Humber’s Institute of Technology (IoT), specialising in providing higher-level technical education and training.

ACADEMIC SKILLS We will provide academic skills coaching that can support the continuation and attainment of all students, which can be easily accessed. We will run small group workshops and one-to-one support for all students to meet individual needs.

HARDSHIP FUND If you find yourself facing financial difficulty during your studies, you may be eligible to apply to the College Hardship Fund for additional support.

HE ESSENTIALS

We ensure that our students have a good study/life balance. We do this by ensuring that the majority of our courses have a flexible approach to delivery. This gives students the opportunity to maximise spare time for part-time work or other commitments alongside achieving their qualification.

Our higher education students have access to “HE Essentials”. This is a bespoke course designed to give students all the information and support they require when studying at York College University Centre. Students can access information and support materials on the following; academic writing, academic referencing, research skills, career advice, information on voluntary work experience to enhance skills and develop personally through work experience, feedback from our student association, external examiner reports and links to policy/procedures and handbooks/programme specifications.

BURSARY SCHEME We are committed to providing a bursary of £600 for all eligible higher education students.

Our accredited courses are designed and taught with a clear focus on industry and post-study employability.

ENVIRONMENT Learn in a friendly and supportive environment. Our courses are also a great way to meet like-minded people.

INDUSTRY LINKS Our strategic engagement with employers, who actively contribute to curriculum development and vocational courses, enhances our students’ employability and experience.

The University Centre is an extremely useful space to complete assignments outside of lessons, as you can get away from the rest of the College. It’s a quiet, comfortable working environment, that also has kitchen facilities and a social/eating area.

We’re proud at York School of Art to have a thriving and vibrant community of mature students (21+). Returning to education is a decision many make; however, it can be daunting and pose some difficult questions.

Navigating funding and finance, how to manage your work-life and studies and even what course is the best to choose to enable you to reach your destination career goals, are all common and important questions.

We want all of our students to not only succeed in their studies, but to thrive in the academic environment we have created here at the College. To achieve this, we have put in place a strong support network with those returning to education in mind.

• Many of our courses have reduced or condensed hours. This is done as a consideration of the various commitments our students have, be that work, home-life or childcare. We strive to make sure you can still study alongside your other commitments.

• Closer tutor contact - you’ll create a close relationship with your tutors who will guide you throughout your studies here with us. Creating a unique relationship with your tutors lets them gauge your skills and talents. They can then help guide you in the best way to approach your studies, tackle your assignments and ultimately pursue your future career.

• Employment focus - our courses are designed and taught with a clear focus on industry and post-study employability.

We realise many mature students seek out further and higher education as a gateway into a specific job role or career advancement. Structuring our courses around this means you’ll be work ready to pursue these avenues when you complete your studies.

WE’RE HERE FROM THE BEGINNING With specialist teams that each offer impartial information, advice and guidance on a full range of services including course information, how to enrol, finance and funding, travel and transport and career advice through e-guidance.

YOUR HEALTH & WELL-BEING Look after you. Your health and well-being is our number one priority. We offer termly health and well-being events. If you are experiencing any problems, feeling under pressure or finding it hard to cope, we have a free and confidential counselling service that you can access. We also have a team of Mental Health First Aiders on-hand throughout the day.

FAITH & SPIRITUALITY We welcome those of all faiths and none; having a designated room ‘Oasis’ set aside for personal reflection and prayer.

BURSARY We’re committed to providing a bursary scheme which all eligible higher education students starting their course in September 2025 can apply to. If you are successful, you will receive a payment of £600 paid in up to two instalments. You could use your bursary to help pay for travel costs or buy essential equipment for your course.

MONEY MATTERS Before, during and after your course, the Admissions and Funding Team are here for you. They will investigate funding options available to help with anything from tuition fee loans and childcare grants to travel costs.

SUPPORT FOR DISABILITIES If you have a disability, specific learning difficulty (such as dyslexia) or a long-term physical or mental health condition, and are applying for a higher education programme, you can apply for a Disabled Students’ Allowance to help with the extra costs you may have. We will also make sure that all students have the reasonable adjustments and support in place if you need it to engage fully with your studies.

COLLABORATING WITH INDUSTRY Work-related learning is a key part of all our degree and higher-level courses. Our academic staff work hard to build strong links with practitioners to ensure that your knowledge and technical abilities match industry requirements. Most of our staff themselves are industry experienced and will be able to provide you with invaluable advice and guidance.

Some of our courses have dedicated modules specifically aimed at supporting students to become self-employed, as that is a need of the sector, and many programmes embed various work-related learning activities to ensure you are equipped with the skills and knowledge required for future employment.

WAYS WE WORK WITH INDUSTRY: GUEST LECTURERS

Our Acting students had the extraordinary experience of auditioning for three high-level industry panelists, including receiving advice, guidance and direction from Lynette Howell Taylor, the Oscar, BAFTA and Golden Globe nominated producer of films such as A Star is Born, Captain Fantastic, The Accountant and The Place Beyond The Pines.

LIVE PROJECTS Some of our first year creative degrees (3D Creative Practice, Fashion Design & Garment Technology, and Graphic & Communication Design) collaborated on a live project with The Guild of Media Arts.

Our students were challenged to create work inspired by York and The Guild, to raise the profile of York as a centre of culture and creativity, which would then be showcased

by The Guild.

COLLABORATING WITH INDUSTRY | 19

WORK EXPERIENCE Media Make-up students have previously secured work experience on both the Peaky Blinders and Dad’s Army set, and with the CBBC, York Fashion Week, Dustfarm (multi award winning production house), University of York Media students: Independent films, York Photography Network Group, Mammoth Films, Backstage Makeovers, Rowntree Player theatrical productions, Dreamtime Creative and York Stage Company.

Our degree students benefit from Screen Yorkshire’s global industry links and expertise. The students participate in a range of practical and industry-focused opportunities and experiences, including a Q&A session with BBC Talent Managers, attending industry training boot camps and special access to events and industry talent, designed to enhance their skills and boost their employment prospects.

TRIPS Our Fashion, Film and Media Make-up students went on a trip to London to visit industry locations and take their learning outside of the classroom. They visited a number of exciting locations and had some amazing experiences, including a backstage tour of the National Theatre, a tour of Warner Bros in Soho, a visit to the Orlebar Brown fashion studio and much more.

CONTINUERS Our varied provision provides a natural transition for our Level 3 students at College to progress to the York School of Art to gain their Art Foundation Diploma or degree whilst remaining in an education institution they are familiar with.

FURTHER AFIELD RETURNING TO EDUCATION Every year we welcome many mature students to our courses at the College, it’s never too late in life to return to education. Circumstances change, goals alter and we are more aware than ever of the importance of doing something we enjoy and feel passionate about. We are seeing more people choosing to retrain or upskill in alternative areas, at all ages. Our mixed age classes allow for crosscollaboration and sharing of ideas that can generate a wealth of knowledge and understanding beyond that found in textbooks.

Whilst many of our students are from the local area, our flexible learning approaches are also well suited to those who need to commute from further afield. We condense our timetables and try to spread courses over as few days as possible to help keep travel costs down and give time for work around studies and looking after family, allowing for a better work/life balance.

GETTING TO US | 22

Getting to uS OUR LOCATION We’re situated on Sim Balk Lane, just off the A1036 Tadcaster Road in York and the South-West border of the outer ring road. Within easy access of a number of major A roads and motorways including the A64, A19, A1 and M62, we’re in an ideal location for commuting.

BY BUS We provide 15 different College bus routes covering large areas of North Yorkshire. Fees are split by zone and can be paid in a number of different ways using our online ticket system.

Our students have access to our full bus service, meaning commuting to and from us is a viable option, which is taken up by many of our students.

Several public service providers including First York and Coastliner also stop outside or near to the College. With various discounted student tickets and passes available, getting to us by public transport is one of the most convenient ways to travel.

LIVING IN YORK When most students think of student accommodation, they think of halls of residence or living in a shared student house, at York College University Centre we do things a little differently. For those requiring accommodation in York, many of our students will source their own living arrangements prior to their course starting. York’s blend of flourishing city life and quaint individuality makes it the perfect place to make home. York’s thriving city life is just as apparent as its historical heritage. Modern bars sit inside ancient buildings, coffee shops sit shoulder to shoulder with Gothic churches and boutiques line medieval streets. York offers all the amenities you would expect of a modern 21st century city but surrounded by some of the UK’s most iconic and beautiful scenery.

Our final year degree, Art Foundation and Access students all exhibit their Final Major Projects at our end-of-year Creative Show.

Our Creative Shows are all about exhibiting your talent. They provide the perfect opportunity for you to present your Final Major Projects to an audience from friends and family to potential employers

Our further education and non-degree adult learners are celebrated at our annual REACH (Recognising Excellence And Celebration Hard-work) Awards.

These awards celebrate the outstanding achievements of our students.

Inspired by the level of perseverance they continually show, many of our students successfully complete their degree or higher-level study alongside demanding careers and hectic schedules, family commitments and for some, even health issues, not to mention the everyday worries and stresses faced by us all.

Our annual Graduation Ceremony is the perfect way to celebrate coming to the end of your studies with us and to recognise the hard work and commitment you have dedicated over the last few years. Students are invited to graduate, surrounded by friends and family in the beautiful setting of York Minster.

Our Students We are extremely proud of our students, and rightfully so. Many of them have gone on to achieve incredible things or are heading towards a successful career. Here at York School of Art, it is so important to us that we remain connected with our graduates and keep up-to-date with our current students. We just love sharing their successes with their peers and other prospective students, below we hear from four of our students: “I did Music at College but, not long after I left at 18, I was at the Ariana Grande concert when the bomb went off at the Manchester Arena.

I then went to University but was suffering from PTSD and dropped out.

During (the Covid) lockdown, I started experimenting a lot with make-up and thought maybe I could do that as a degree. I really liked the sound of the course here, especially as it had three different aspects - hair, media make-up and special effects - and, from the moment I started the degree, it was really good.

I believe everything happens for a reason and, after graduating, I got a job with Simbodies in Thirsk making prosthetics and silicone dummies that we give to the military and NHS to help them simulate disaster scenarios and know what to do when things like the Manchester terror attack happen.”

“I visited other universities before a friend recommended York College University Centre, but it became my first choice and instantly felt like somewhere I could grow. It isn’t packed like other universities and the friendliness and almost family-like feel was essential to my success.

Everyone is welcome regardless of their circumstances and can find a place to feel supported while pushing to be the very best in their subject. In the final year I was hit with the news that me and my partner were expecting a baby and, then my dad passed away.

I expected both events to have a huge impact on my work, however my tutors gave me the support I needed.

The course also helped me develop skills I’ve transferred to my employment with (York-based graphic design business) Corebrand. We used industry level iMacs, had access to print rooms, and had brilliant photography equipment.”

You’re given guidance in terms of what you need to improve and how to get better at the craft you’re doing. I also enjoyed the experimenting I was able to do during my first year and wouldn’t even have considered starting some aspects of the course if it wasn’t for doing it.”

“My grandson, who is now at University, came to York College and he kept telling me about this Art course he was on and all the things he was doing and I said, ‘That just sounds great’. So, after hearing so much about it, I asked him if he thought they took on older people, because I’m 83.

He found out for me and I soon learned that it wasn’t a problem.

I came to the Open Event and was amazed by the standard of the students’ work here. It’s amazing and so diverse.

Art was a new thing to me. I hadn’t done it since school where I was considered to be not very good, but I was advised that the Access course would be the best one for me and I was given the confidence to give it a go.

It’s been fascinating and a great course to do, because you have bits of everything within it and you learn so much.”

Alongside your official certificate, you will receive a York School of Art certificate of completion.

UNIVERSITY OF ARTS LONDON University of the Arts London (UAL) offers an extensive range of courses in art, design, fashion, communication and performing arts.

UAL is ranked second in the world of art and design. UAL validates our Art & Design Foundation Diploma and our Level 4 Diploma in Performance* (*subject to validation.)

SKILLS & EDUCATION GROUP AWARDS Skills & Education Group offer qualifications and assessments which are regulated by CCEA, Ofqual and Qualifications Wales.

Our Access to Higher Education Diploma in Art & Design is validated by the Skills & Education Group Awards.

THE OPEN UNIVERSITY We are proud to have The Open University (OU) as our validating partner for our Foundation Degrees and BA Hons Degree subjects. The Open University was founded by Royal Charter in 1969. It has an international reputation for the quality of its teaching by supported open learning, for its research and for offering a university education to many students who would not otherwise have had the opportunity to study. The OU’s mission can be summarised thus: The Open University is open to people, places, methods and ideas.

Institutional approval and OU validated awards are conferred under the OU’s Royal Charter. They are of comparable standard to those made to students directly registered with the OU and other UK universities.

Programmes/modules in our Foundation Degree and BA Hons Degree subject(s) have been developed and will be delivered

by York College University Centre. They have been validated through a process of external peer review by The Open University as being of an appropriate standard and quality to lead to The Open University validated award.

YOUR FEES AND LIVING EXPENSES Studying a qualification is a significant investment in your future. We understand the importance of ensuring you are making a sound financial decision and are committed to supporting you during your time with us.

We recognise that studying for any qualification can be a demanding time and there are lots of decisions to be made.

ART & DESIGN FOUNDATION This course is FREE to study for under 19s post A Levels or Level 3 course. Please get in touch if you are older than 19 to discuss your options.

ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION (HE)

You might be eligible to take out an Advanced Learner Loan for your Access to HE course. This means you will not have to pay any upfront fees. Student Finance will pay the tuition fee on your behalf directly to the College. Once you have completed

your course, you will only start to repay your loan when your income is over a certain ‘threshold’ amount. Student Finance England will also ‘write off’ any outstanding Advance Learner Loan balances you owe for an Access to HE Diploma once you have completed an eligible higher education course. This means that you do not have to repay it.

HIGHER EDUCATION (HE) To study a higher education course you will need to fund your tuition fees and your living expenses. Many students choose to take out a student loan to help with meeting the cost of tuition fees and living expenses. The funding you are entitled to will depend on whether you are a full or part-time student; if you have previously studied at a higher education level; which country you have been living in and when you start your course. Additional funding is also available for students who have a disability and those who have children or other dependents.

FEES FOR HE Most of our fees are £7,200 per year for a full-time course and this amount is split for those studying part-time. For BA (Hons) Film Production & Professional Practice, the first year fee will be £8,400, which will include all the kit you require for your course. The Foundation Degree in Media Make-up, Special Effects & Hair Design’s first year fee will also be higher at £8,200, the higher fee includes your kit fee, then £7,200 for year two.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

September & January | one evening per week | 10 weeks This course caters for all abilities and will enable you to learn how to pursue your interest in photography and image manipulation. The course will provide additional knowledge and skills, enabling you to create your own portfolio of work, and hopefully increase your enjoyment in photography.

This photography course is a great way to improve your understanding of photographic concepts and equipment. Image editing software is covered at a basic level, introducing tools and techniques up to intermediate level.

DIGITAL PHOTOshop September & January | one evening per week | 10 weeks

This course is suitable for all and a variety of abilities will be catered for, using tutorials/exercises which accommodate the beginner, intermediate and advanced user of image manipulation software.

The Digital Photoshop course is a great way to improve your understanding and get to grips with the use of image editing software. The course uses ‘Adobe Photoshop’ and ‘Adobe Bridge’ using tutorials produced by the tutor.

Alternatively, you may be asked to carry out a photographic task to produce specific images which will then be used in class the following week.

September & January | one evening per week | 10 weeks This course is the ideal starting point if you are looking to get into dressmaking, with all abilities being catered for. The course will cover a range of essential skills and techniques for working with woven fabrics to provide a basic introduction to dressmaking, as well as taking skills and interests to a higher-level throughout the 10 weeks. You will also have the opportunity to follow up your own ideas and projects with support from the tutor during this course.

This course will cover a range of essential skills and techniques to provide a basic introduction to dressmaking with stretch fabric, as well as taking skills and interests to a higher-level. It is recommended that you will have a working knowledge of dressmaking and/or have undertaken the Dressmaking: Woven Fabric course beforehand.

Exploring materials and techniques, you will learn basic essential skills for working with stretch fabric and gain a basic understanding of safe dressmaking and sewing studio practice. You will also have the opportunity to follow up your own ideas and projects with support from the tutor during this course.

After the initial introductions to the basic techniques of printmaking, you may have the opportunity to work on individual personal projects - negotiated with the tutor, or to continue to explore these techniques and processes further at a deeper, more exploratory level.

September & January | one evening per week | 10 weeks This course is a great introduction to jewellery. Though the course is project-based, the projects themselves are open to interpretation, so the work students produce could be functional, sculptural, decorative, or site-specific - anything in fact that can be made in metal and with processes delivered.

You will be encouraged to experiment with techniques and processes and to become familiar with the work of both ancient and contemporary makers. Help with expanding your creativity, developing design, and professional advice is also available if required.

September & January | one evening per week | 10 weeks This course is suitable for all abilities and anyone with a genuine desire to learn the essential skills and techniques required to provide a basic introduction to ceramics (pottery) as well as progressing skills and interests to a higher-level.

Ceramics (pottery) is an exciting medium and though the course is project-based, the projects themselves are open to interpretation, so the work you produce could be functional, sculptural, decorative or site-specific; anything in fact, that can be made in clay.

ACCESS TO HE: ART & DESIGN Overview The Access to Higher Education (HE) Diploma is designed for people who do not have “traditional” qualifications, such as A Levels, and for those who have been out of education for some time. If you want to go to university but you do not have the entry qualifications, or you are worried that you might not be able to cope with the demands of degree-level study, then an Access course can help.

This course will provided you with a thorough grounding in art and design.

The course is run over two days each week for one year (full-time) or one day per week for two years (part-time). The programme would suit those with some experience of creative art and design who may be returning to education, studying for the first time at college or wishing to change career.

The range of units studied ensure that you will have a strong portfolio of creative ideas to show your potential, for the next stage of your educational journey or career.

PROGRESSION OPPORTUNITIES Students have gone on to study art and design degree courses across the country, including Wimbledon College of Art and Design, Northumbria University and Manchester Metropolitan University, among other prestigious art schools. Past students have progressed on to studying at Higher Education level in a broad range of disciplines, including architecture, surface pattern design, graphic design and branding, illustration and animation.

This course will provide you with the transition from general education to specialist art and design education and enables you to make an informed decision regarding what area you want to apply to within art and design at undergraduate level.

We deliver the course in three distinctive stages: Diagnostic Investigation, Developing Specialist Practice and Consolidating Practice.

The introduction to the course is mainly diagnostic which will give you experience in a number of different art and design areas. Our Commitment to Academic Support We will provide academic skills coaching that can support the continuation and attainment of all students and be easily accessed throughout the day in the University Centre. We will run small group workshops and one-to-one support for all students to meet individual needs.

Our Financial Commitment York College is committed to providing a Bursary Scheme which all eligible higher education students starting their course in September 2025 can apply to. If you are successful, you will receive a payment of £600 to help with the initial costs of settling into your programme.

The purpose of the Higher Education Bursary is to: • Help students overcome financial barriers in order to access higher education • Support and retain • Promote a positive attitude to learning There is a commitment from York College & University Centre to provide a £600 bursary for all eligible higher education students.

The Higher Education Bursary is split into nine separate bursaries: • Care leavers • Student carer • Financial assistance • Estranged young people • Students from Gypsy and Traveller Communities • Refugees • Carers • Students living in a household under £25,000 • Students with mental health problems • Specific learning difficulties and/or an autism spectrum disorder We also offer a Hardship Fund that provides additional emergency funding on a caseby-case basis. Support is prioritised to students who are having issues with their student loans.
