TO WALTER E. BACHMAN

WE DEDICATE THE 1954 MARATHON

FOR YEARS OF SERVICE as a professor in Philosophy. In his classes many have found a philosophy for their own lives.

FOR YEARS OF SERVICE as Dean, being a friend and counselor to the many students who have sought his guidance in solving their numerous problems.

FOR YEARS OF SERVICE as President, helping our college through these years of indecision. We salute him for his efforts to make this a stronger York College.

FOR YEARS OF SERVICE in the interest of young people. We offer this book as a symbol of the appreciation we express to him from York College students, both past and present.

A rt G allegos, June Shields, and L ow ell Johnson play ping pong in the Student Union.

Our stay at York College is over but the friend ships we have made, the affection we feel for our Alma Mater, and the memories of the campus will never fade from our hearts. We must now face the challenge of the future. We will not soon be forgotten, nor will we soon forget.

Proof that the men in our class were the mightiest lies not only in the fact that they outnumbered the women four to one but they also led our class. Bob Voris was our President. Other officers were: Dale Smith, Vice-President; Dean Hollinger, Secretary; and Dick Alire, Treasurer. Tom Stone led the Student Council. June Shields was chosen Homecoming Queen.

A T EASE

Ram ona Burgett, R am ona W at kins, A n d y Peterson, and Glen Dirreen

We found that life as Juniors was busier than ever, for with another year came new duties, new activities, and new friends. Looking back, we can proudly praise some of our members for their accomplishments. Our class officers were Glen Dirreen, President; Morris Churchill, Vice-President; Ramona Watkins, Secretary; and Peter Neidl, Treasurer. At the football banquet two of our members reigned. Pete Neidl was Representative Football Man and Pat Chaney was Panther Sweetheart. In the field of music, Jo Heidrick and Diane Blauch sang in the girls’ trio, and Joyce King with her original piano solo “ Serenade to a Mouse” could hardly be forgotten. This year has been one of happy Christian fellowship. The symbols of York College have made their marks deep in our hearts. We are expectantly looking forward to a greater next year when we too may don those caps and gowns and take our places among the chosen few.

Half done. As we reach the middle of our college career we stop to look back over the past year. With Jari Davis as our president we really had a good year. Tom Kirby, vice-president; Marjorie Wilson, secretary; Duane Epp, treasurer made up the rest of our officers. Our big event was the Sophomore Reception “ Arabian Nights” . You could find our members in all campus activities. Darlene Lewis sang in the Girls’ Trio and Eva Jones was well known for her beautiful voice. But enough looking back. We’ve got two more years to look forward to.

After we found that marking x’s on bricks or playing Paul Revere downtown was all part of college we began to really enjoy ourselves. Things were kind of new and different up here on the hill for us newcomers but we soon found our place. We elected Bill Bradley as our president and chose Jane Oak, Jean Phillips, and Bill Lawrence to help him as vice-president, secretary, and treasurer respectively. Bill Lawrence and Carolyn Ziemke were elected as cheerleaders. Now we too know why Y.C. “ just kinda gets under your skin” . We’ll be back next year to “ help” the freshmen get acquainted through Freshman Court.

Functioning as a House of Representatives with all student or ganizations represented is the Student Council. With Tom holding the gavel many things were accomplished this year. One of the biggest projects they undertook was the float “ Home for Christmas” in the York Christmas parade. Most of the work was behind the scenes and little recognition given to the members, yet the feeling of a job well done was sufficient reward.

around the campus with their blue sweat ers and white Y ’s. These are the men who have lettered in football, basket ball, tennis, and track. Under the hand of Gene Littler the Panther Club was busy with Homecom ing and the Football Banquet. They put in a lot of hard work on the queen’s float for the Homecoming Parade.

Football 1953 brought a new coach to the York College campus. As the season got under way, the inexperience of the team began to show and as time progressed this was a deciding factor in the Panther season. Traveling to Dakota Wesleyan for the season opener the team suffered a 57-0 defeat. Kansas Tech. handed the Pan thers their first home defeat as they rolled up a 25-0 score. Homecoming fans were disappointed to see Y.C. lose to Sioux Falls by a score of 27-0. Again taking the road and playing on a wet, unsodded field the team went down before St. Mary’s of the Plains 33-0. To finish the season the Panthers again met Kansas Tech and playing on even terms but missing the breaks gave up hopes of a win with an 18-0 set-back.

BASKETBALL Facing the 1953 season with Jim Ekart the only return足 ing letterman, the team found long hours of training neces足 sary to overcome the handicap of inexperience. Losing Tom Stone and Gale Cook through injuries at midseason had some effect on the team, but with the new semester came several new members. Not evident in the final scores is the fine spirit displayed by the Panthers.

The staff of the 1954 MARATHON wishes to express its appreciation to those who made this year book possible. We especially want to thank Dr. Walter E. Bachman and Dr. A. V. Howland for their help when the going was a little tough, Gale Studio for their patience with a particular Editor, Bernie Sheehe of Josten’s and all our advertisers.
