Inaugural YU Day Raises $165k York University celebrates first YU Day

COLLECTING YU STORIES As I reflect on our first year at York University, I am grateful for the many people Anessa and I have come to know. Whether student, faculty member, staff member, or alumnus, each person we have met has a York story. It has been a tremendous blessing to learn how York University has shaped so many lives over the years.

Now, we, too, are collecting our own YU stories, and a couple in particular stand out.

This May and June, Anessa and I traveled through the Pacific Northwest. It was a listening tour of sorts for both the university and the Kite Center for Ministry. A common theme we heard from ministers, school administrators, and alumni was that we have a wide-open door to build strong relationships throughout the region.

On one of our stops, we met Kevin Hooper and his family, who serve with both the Midvale Church of Christ and the Weiser Church of Christ in western Idaho. The Midvale story itself is remarkable—a shrinking congregation that has rebounded to more than 80 attendees in a town of just 220 people.

Kevin preaches in Midvale on Sunday mornings and in Weiser on Sunday evenings, and we were able to attend both.

While at the Weiser congregation, we had the privilege of sitting in on one of Dakota Menke '18’s Bible classes.

After worship, we were introduced to Dakota as well as alumni Tyler and Sarah (Genung) Goodwin '18. I loved hearing how an entire apartment in Gibbs Hall decided to move to Weiser, Idaho, with the shared purpose of serving the Weiser Church of Christ through vocational ministry. Today, Dakota, Tyler and Sarah (and their children), and Kodiak Ratzlaff '18, are blessing their community in rural Idaho.

A second story that stands out from this year came during the choir concert at the Council Bluffs Church of Christ, just across the Missouri River. Our students sang beautifully, and Dr. Clark Roush was at his best. At one point, admissions counselor Aaron Miles '02 asked the audience how many in attendance were York alumni. Almost every hand went up.

As a newcomer to the Midwest, I am learning more and more about the vital connection between York University and the church. These stories—and so many others like them—remind me that York’s impact extends far beyond our campus. We not only want to be the university where Christian students receive a high-quality, Christ-centered education; we also want to be the university that sends men and women back into their congregations and communities equipped for service in God's kingdom.

What sets York University apart from most other colleges in America is that our identity is inseparable from the mission of Jesus Christ. We strive to prepare graduates who are skilled in their professions, committed to making disciples, and ready to serve and lead with humility, wisdom, and kindness. That mission is alive in places like Weiser and Council Bluffs, and it is written into the stories of York alumni across the country.

We hope you enjoy this edition of the Heritage and the many stories it contains. Each one is a reminder that York University's mission extends far beyond our campus as graduates, students, faculty, staff, and supporters faithfully serve God, family, and society. Thank you for your continued role in helping us carry that mission forward.

The historic smokestack on the northeast corner of McGehee Hall began its service in 1911 and remained in use until the late 1950s. The heating system, situated in the lower levels of the building, once provided warmth for several structures across the campus.

KITE CENTER FOR MINISTRY GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY Community guests, YU trustees, faculty, staff and students gathered outside of York University’s McGehee Hall on May 1, to celebrate the groundbreaking for an expansion of the 115-yearold facility. The new construction will house the Smith and Mary Kite Center for Ministry. Groundbreaking participants included Terry, Sydney and David Kite, three of the four children of the new center's namesake.

The center for ministry was founded in 2025 when York was selected as a key collaborator with Pepperdine University for a Lilly Endowment grant. It was named for Smith and Mary Kite earlier this year at the request of the donor funding the new facility.

During the ceremony, YU President Timothy Westbrook focused on Smith and Mary Kite’s deep connections to the school and long-time service to churches of Christ throughout the midsection of the country. He noted that, “Although they would certainly object to the center being named in their honor, it is so appropriate that we name this space for a couple who simply wanted to serve.”

Dr. Terence (Terry) Kite, Smith and Mary’s eldest son and a longtime member of YU’s Math-Science Department, responded for the family. He gave a brief summary of the family’s connections with the school, summarizing with, “My three brothers came here.

Several cousins, nieces, nephews and others of my family came here, and some found their spouses here. I did not come here, but I did sit in on Alex Humphrey’s Hebrews course — I did not take any exams. You can tell from all this that the Smith Kite family has supported and will continue supporting the mission of YU.” Kite concluded by saying, “Dad would have appreciated this honor, but mostly he just wanted to be a common, every day minister of Christ, trying to help more people change their lives and begin following close to Jesus.”

The mission of the Smith and Mary Kite Center for Ministry is to equip and empower men and women for ministry and leadership in local churches, making disciples through supporting and encouraging congregations. The center is currently led by coRendering for the new east entrance of McGehee Hall and Kite Center for Ministry 4

directors, Drs. Anessa Westbrook and Scott Laird.

In her remarks at the groundbreaking, Dr. Anessa Westbrook reflected on the increased potential for the Kite Center thanks to the expansion. Highlighting the purpose for the new building, she shared, “The Kite Center for Ministry exists to support and encourage the work of churches throughout this region. We are providing conferences and seminars to equip and empower leaders, coaching, ministry cohorts, retreats, mini-grants, and we serve as connectors to needed resources. Many of these congregations were shaped and strengthened by the ministry of Smith and Mary Kite, and it is a privilege to carry that legacy forward. This new space allows that work to grow.”

The 7,600 square-foot addition was made possible by an anonymous $2 million donation that will fully fund the expansion portion of the project. Along with housing the Smith and Mary Kite Center for Ministry, the addition will provide new classrooms, offices and other meeting spaces. The façade of the new construction will align with the original 1911 structure.

Fundraising toward the additional $2.1 million needed to renovate the original structure is ongoing.

Dr. Steve Eckman, YU chancellor, will serve as project manager for both the expansion and renovation portions of the project. JLC Construction, led by Drew Jensen, is the general contractor.

The anticipated completion date for new construction is summer 2027.

York University welcomed six new members to its Board of Trustees on May 1, 2026. Selected for their professional accomplishments and commitment to York’s mission, the new trustees bring a wealth of experience from diverse fields, including law, healthcare, ministry, finance and nonprofit leadership.

Among those joining the board are Scott Lambert '79 of North Richland Hills, Texas, executive director of The Conversation Group; Caleb Rush '10 of Frisco, Texas, a partner with Spencer Fane LLP; and Dr. Jordan Sikes '03 of Omaha, Neb., a practicing podiatric surgeon. Also appointed were Dustin Hopson of Wichita Falls, Texas, who serves with

Working alongside university leadership, these trustees will help guide York University’s strategic priorities and future growth. Their collective expertise and servant leadership will strengthen the board’s efforts as the university continues pursuing its mission of transforming lives through Christ-centered education.

CLAYTON MUSEUM OF ANCIENT HISTORY HIRES NEW CURATOR York University’s Clayton Museum of Ancient History is excited to introduce its new curator, Rebekah Ross.

Having earned master’s degrees in Archeology and Biblical Studies from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and Library and Information Science from the University of South Carolina, Ross is currently a doctoral candidate in Archeology through Lipscomb University. She brings years of experience in research and archeology, having served as an excavator at a 5th century site in Cyprus for eight years.

Ever since she was a child, Ross has loved being outside and digging in the dirt, but she didn’t consider studying archeology until later in life. Originally a Literature major, she assumed she would get her doctorate in English. But after attending a Bible study over the book of Isaiah, she began to explore other areas of interest.

“My favorite part of the study was when we were talking about the culture back then, the background information and how it connects to evidence we have outside of the Bible,” Ross said. This newfound passion led her to archeology, and in 2012, she did her first dig in Cyprus. “I absolutely loved it,” Ross said. “I got to get dirty as a job, and then spend the other months in a library.”

During her journey to York, Ross was overwhelmed by the welcome she received. The excitement of having a museum curator was palpable on campus, and she described the enthusiastic welcome to YU as “refreshing.”

Although Ross only started in January and says she’s still adjusting to the role, she has no shortage of ideas for the museum.

In addition to plans for a gift shop, Ross wants to create a greater

focus on the Hellenistic period and provide more opportunities for interactive exhibits. She hopes to find ways to appeal to all of a visitor’s senses and to create more immersive experiences, giving visitors a fuller picture of ancient life.

“I want to tell a story,” Ross said. “One of the coolest things that archaeology brings to the table is that we can provide context, and we can help you understand what’s going on in the Bible, because although this was written for us, it was not written to us.”

As Ross reflected on the opportunity to work as the Clayton Museum’s curator, she expressed nothing but gratitude: “I don’t have the words to express how awesome this is,” she said. “I’m glad to be here!”

NEW UNIVERSITY SINGERS DIRECTOR

York University is thrilled to announce Dr. Lester Ray Miller III ’00 as the new director of the York University Singers (formerly the concert choir). Following the news of Dr. Clark Roush’s retirement (see page 10), Roush will pass the baton to Miller, who will officially begin serving as the choir’s director in the upcoming fall semester.

Having served as associate professor of music and director of Celebration Singers for the last three years, Miller is no stranger to YU’s music department. The son of Dr. Ray and Gail Miller, he was the first YU graduate to earn a music education degree.

He brings 24 years of experience in music education and recently earned his Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.

Miller is excited to direct the program Roush spent four decades building.

“I am prepared and ecstatic,” Miller said of the transition. “The biggest change will be the students having a different way of learning, and that may cause anxiety, but I have been through this before and I am ready to work with students to make the transition smooth. I also know these students from having been on campus the past few years, so they have familiarity with me."

As Miller looks forward to the future of the University Singers, he plans to broaden the choir’s repertoire and to “explore different avenues and open up different types of music.”

“I'm excited for the opportunity to shape the group. I believe that our future will be filled with opportunities for growth and outreach for the university." n 6

MR. & MS. YORK UNIVERSITY Mr. and Ms. York University candidates were recognized at the all-school banquet in April. Faculty and staff make the selection for this award from among graduating seniors. Candidates embody a commitment to the mission, purpose and core values of York University. The candidates for Mr. YU were Landen Baum of Omaha, Neb., Jaden Beske of Rhinelander, Wis., Devin Carroll of Fair Grove, Mo., and Drew Lugafet of Hutchinson, Kan. The candidates for Ms. YU were Cierra Dringman of Beaver City, Neb., Rebekah (Baker) Marks of Mount Dora, Fla., Eliza Rohda of Waverly, Neb., and Mallory (Myers) Tremaine of Rhinelander, Wis.

Drew Lugafet was named as Mr. YU. Lugafet, an exercise science major, is a three-time Champion of Character award winner for YU’s track and field/cross country team and a member of the 2022 winning Syncfest team. He has also been involved in University Singers, Celebration Singers, wrestling, Student Government Association, study abroad and Greek Life.

After graduation, he plans to pursue a master’s and potentially a doctorate in physical therapy or athletic training.

The title of Ms. YU was given to Eliza Rohda, an English and vocational ministry major. While at YU, she has been involved in the Student Government Association as the Ignite Excellence Chairperson, has served as an officer in Chi Rho and Omega Phi, been involved in theatre and study abroad, and worked as a resident assistant. She is a member of the Alpha Chi National College Honor Society and the Distinguished Faith and Learning Scholars and has been a member of the dean’s list each semester. She was given the 2022–23 Best Supporting Actress

Award, competed as a finalist in the 2026 Stone-Campbell Journal Undergraduate Paper Competition, and like Lugafet, was a member of the 2022 winning Syncfest team. After graduation, Eliza plans to attend Harding School of Theology to earn her Master of Divinity. With 100% of her tuition covered by the Lewis Scholarship, she hopes to continue developing her skills in biblical research and pursue a doctorate in the future. n

BIBLE AND MINISTRY FINALISTS In April, Bible and Ministry majors Eliza Rohda of Waverly, Neb., and Bethany Wright of Canberra, Australia, were invited to present their research papers at the Stone-Campbell Journal Conference as finalists in the conference’s undergraduate student paper competition.

Since 2001, the Stone-Campbell Journal has brought scholars together each year to learn from one another in both research and fellowship.

Competition organizers called this year’s submission field one of the strongest they had seen, with record numbers of highquality student papers being evaluated.

All papers were sent to a panel of three to four judges, with identifying information such as student names and institutional locations removed. Judges ranked the papers based on their overall strength, and the top three were invited to present at the conference held at Johnson University in Knoxville, Tenn. Following each paper’s presentation, a panel of judges questioned the finalists on the details of their papers and the application of their research.

Rohda’s paper, entitled “Paul as AntiImperialist? A Status Quaestionis of Interpretations of Romans 13:1–7” and Wright’s paper, entitled “Mouths, Arms, and Stomachs: Assessing Proposed Parallels of Paul’s Metaphor of the Body in 1 Corinthians 12 Through the Lens of Archaeology and Ancient Rhetoric,” were originally written as projects for Dr. Garrett Best’s Advanced Biblical Research class in the fall. Encouraged by Best to submit their papers to the competition,

IN THE NEWS Faculty members Dr. Shannon Leinen '07, Dr. Darrel Sears '01, Dr. Erin DeHart '94, and Dr. Clark Roush will present their paper, “Teaching Behind the Walls: A Qualitative Descriptive Study of Faculty Experiences in Prison Education Programs,” at the Best Practices in Christian Higher Education Conference at Abilene Christian University this September.

John I. Baker III, associate professor of communication and theatre, continues to reach significant milestones in the performing arts. His script, Jack Pumpkinhead in Oz, has been accepted for publication and is scheduled for release

in August or September 2026, marking the fifth script of his to be accepted for publication. In March, he celebrated directing his 150th production and was named the inaugural holder of the Clark Roush Endowed Chair for the Performing Arts, following the chair’s renaming in honor of Dr. Clark Roush upon his retirement.

James Butler-Gruett, associate professor of English, continues to receive recognition for his creative and scholarly work.

His book review and several poems are forthcoming in respected literary journals, and his short story, “Body in the Men’s Room,” was longlisted for the 2026 Susan Neville Prize in Fiction. He also participated in a public discussion on literature, film, and poetry that complemented his teaching in the classroom.

Paulo Carvalho, member of the university maintenance crew, was voted by students as the 2026 Staff Member of the Year.

Dr. Steven Hardy, professor of English, has agreed to serve as Division Chair for Humanities and Bible and Ministry beginning in Fall 2026.

Chad Karcher and Evan Kingston, athletic trainer and assistant athletic trainer, recently attended the Mid-America Athletic Trainers’ Association District Convention and Symposium for continuing education.

They also visited Lincoln Northwest High School, where they presented to advanced medical science classes and promoted careers in athletic training.

Dr. Bryan Kretz ’08, chair of the Division of Science and Mathematics, was voted by students as the 2026 Faculty Member of the Year.

Fuller Ming, chair of the Department of Computer Science, recently attended the Nebraska Makerspace Conference, where he explored innovative approaches to hands-on learning, creativity, and entrepreneurship. He also participated in the Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges conference, where four York University students represented the university in the conference’s annual Hackathon competition.

Dr. Jared Pack, chair of the Department of History, was recently appointed to the board of Leadership York, recognizing his commitment to community engagement and leadership development.

This achievement speaks to the quality of students we have at York.”

As finalists in the competition, Rohda and Wright received copies of this year’s Stone-Campbell Journal, a year’s subscription to the journal and free entrance to next year’s conference. n

Foreign Relations’ America 250 project, contributing scholarly commentary on significant foreign policy decisions in U.S. history.

Dr. Clark Roush recently retired from YU’s music department after a distinguished career of teaching and leadership (see page 10). In recent months, he served on the steering committee for the City of York’s Comprehensive Plan and helped promote community engagement through the York Creative District’s presentation of Not Too Far Distant, a historical play exploring a Nebraskan’s experience during WWII.

Janet Rush '83, bookstore and post office manager, was presented with the 2026 David and Nellie Reppart Service Award for her work in and outside of the bookstore. For over two decades, Rush has managed an ever-increasing influx of packages and letters, while always offering a smile and candy to every student who stops by the bookstore. Her impact isn’t just felt when students come to pick up their mail, as she has opened her home to many students, offering consistent support and a place to stay when needed.

Dr. Greg Stevenson, professor of Bible & Ministry, continues to make significant contributions to biblical scholarship.

His book "Greek Religion and the Book of Revelation" has been accepted for publication by Oxford University Press, and he recently served as editor of "Theology and Artificial Intelligence in Speculative Fiction," forthcoming from Bloomsbury Publishing.

LORD, MAKE ME AN INSTRUMENT

By Chrystal (Duquette '03) Houston In the history of York University, few personalities loom larger than Dr. Clark Roush, Professor of Music and Endowed Chair for the Performing Arts, affectionately known to his students simply as “DR.” For four decades, DR’s baton has kept time over a variety of musical ensembles, as well as the university’s flagship choir, currently known as the York University Singers. In the classroom, he has taught music theory, ear training, conducting, music history, methods classes, and countless sections of music appreciation, where he shared his love of music with students beyond the risers and trained the next generation of music educators and worship ministers. He has devoted the majority of his life to this calling, and now, as his career builds to a final crescendo, it is fitting to fermata and reprise, to go back to the beginning, to reexamine the themes and appreciate the music once more.

He attended Harding University and majored in music education, choosing that school for its reputation for placing music educators in jobs. While there, a young soprano named Sue Morris caught his eye. Unfortunately, she was dating his best friend and fellow music major at the time.

Also, she thought DR was rude and obnoxious.

Eventually, they became friends, and when the relationship with the other guy ended, DR made his move—despite the fact that Sue had declared, “I’m never going to date another music major!” It took time, but he convinced her to give him a chance. The pair married in May of 1981, shortly after he graduated from Harding. The friend/previous suitor was the best man at their wedding.

“She stole my heart, and she still has it,” DR reflected.

Oh How Kindly Hast Thou Led Me

Anyone who knows DR knows of his great love story with The Queen, or TQ as he called her. As big a personality as DR is, Sue was his counterbalance, his equal, his partner in every way. She earned a bachelor’s degree in business from York University and worked for years in the business and advancement offices. She had a head for business and a heart for the arts, often using her position in the advancement office to secure support for arts programming. She was regularly a featured performer for York University Spring Works concerts, her powerful soprano voice reaching the rafters. The couple also collaborated at the Yorkshire Playhouse, York’s community theatre, and their sons were often a part of the musical and theatrical productions as well.

“He modeled what a Christian husband is,” recalled Dr. Jordan Sikes '03, who was choir president from 2001-2002. “Sue was always second only to God in his life. He lifted her up like a queen. He served her.”

Tragically, DR and TQ’s duet was cut short in 2020 after a battle with pancreatic cancer and its aftermath. Sue was mourned by so many, but none more deeply than her

He was nine years old. His father was in charge of the service roster for their church and asked his young son and recently baptized brother in Christ, “Don't you think you should use your talents for God's people?”

And so he did.

Soon, DR was leading the congregation in worship. For a time, he considered a career in pulpit ministry, but as his musical talents developed throughout his teenage years, he came to realize his true calling. By the time he graduated from high school, he answered with confidence when people would ask what he wanted to do with his life: earn a doctorate, become a choral director at a Christian college or university, have a wife and two children, and live a life of service and musical excellence.

For those who know the passion and precision that DR brings to every rehearsal, it is hardly surprising that he followed this life plan like a musical score, with meticulous attention to each measure.

spouse and creative partner of more than 38 years. In the wake of her death, DR took up a pen and wrote his way through the grief. During that time of personal and global turmoil, DR began writing letters to his beloved and posting them on social media. His vulnerability and eloquence as he explored the complicated emotional journey connected him to others experiencing grief around the world. He began to hear from readers over and over again, “Your words have helped me. You should write a book.”

His letters to Sue, and other grief writings he penned through the first two

years of life without her, eventually became I Lost My Anchor: A Creative Memoir of Grief, published in 2025. The week we spoke for this interview was the six-year anniversary of her passing. “I'm pretty sure I'll never be done crying,” he said; however, he is no longer in despair. “I am blessed to have had her for over 38 years. I believe she is still helping me become everything that I could be. I still feel blessed by her. In this phase of my life, I am trying to be Godhonoring, but also Sue-honoring. I would not be who I am without her.”

Nearer Still Nearer Shortly after the wedding, the Roushes moved to Iowa City, Iowa, where DR completed an accelerated master’s degree at the University of Iowa. He started his career as a K-12 vocal music teacher in Walnut, Iowa, and while there, welcomed their son Matthew '06. In 1986, he accepted a faculty position at what was then York College and began teaching and conducting. A few years later, their son Mitchell '10 was born. In 1995, Clark completed his doctoral studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Through his years at York, he helped the organization grow from a two-year to a four-year school to a university with master’s degree offerings. He is proud of the growth of the music department in particular. For the first decade he was at York, he was the only full-time music faculty member. As the program grew, additional faculty and degrees were added, including vocal music performance, vocal music education, music business, and worship ministry. He has served in a variety of administrative and leadership t

roles through the years as needs arose, from division chair to Higher Learning Commission faculty liaison, where he has played a crucial role in maintaining the university’s accreditation. During his years, he has also seen the program grow from sharing rehearsal space in the limited confines of Gurganus Hall and performing in larger venues off campus to the construction of the Bartholomew Performing Arts Center, where there is a dedicated rehearsal space and sufficient seating for the large audiences the choir attracts.

“I have been grateful for each administration that has supported the choir and the music department, thus allowing it to grow, as well as the many people who have given financially so that we can do what we do,” he said.

In addition to the choir, DR has directed a variety of other vocal ensembles and performances on campus, including Praise, His4, Gospel Messengers, Celebration Singers, Songfest, Cocoa and Carols, and musical theatre productions.

He has also been involved in the York community arts scene for decades, especially at the Yorkshire Playhouse, where he directed musicals and served on the board. He is currently the director of York’s Creative District and was part of securing and distributing a recent $96,000 grant, used to upgrade equipment at the Playhouse and City Auditorium, as well as install more murals in downtown York.

In an additional role, he also serves as a gubernatorial appointee to the Nebraska Arts Council board of directors.

While it wasn’t part of his job, DR says he is very proud to have helped several former students and colleagues earn their

doctoral degrees, serving as a mentor, guide, and cheerleader through the long and challenging process.

In his decades of service, there have been many musical highlights, moments that DR reflects on with great satisfaction for the beauty created as well as the educational opportunities his students were given. York University is a small school in a rural area, but that did not stop DR from providing his students with a worldclass education. While the annual choir tour through the Midwest is a mainstay of the program, in 2005, he and Sue took students on a 17-day, 10-concert tour of Japan, hosted by the Sendai Church and the four YU choir alumni who were serving as missionaries there.

“What a massive undertaking!” recalled Joel Osborne '00, one of the Sendai team who is still serving as minister in Japan today. Osborne reflected with awe on the fundraising and logistics of the trip: “Transporting 50 people internationally, and on buses through literally half of the nation, and coordinating their housing, meals, laundry, sightseeing and educational experiences, meaningful participation in the mission—you name it—was all so massive…And beautiful. And so incredibly impactful. In fact, there are people I run into here from the community who still remember when they came two decades ago.”

Another huge event occurred locally a year later when DR directed John Rutter’s Mass of the Children, which featured not only the Concert Choir, but the York Area Children’s Choir and professional musicians from the surrounding area.

“It was a glorious night,” he said of the performance. “It was one of the most

hectic semesters of my life, and I didn't even care.”

A few years later, DR took the choir to New York City to perform at Lincoln Center with renowned choral composer Eric Whitacre, whose works are regularly performed by the York University Singers.

Closer to home, the choir has performed with Abendmusik (a Lincoln arts initiative) and at the Nebraska Music Educators Association annual conference on multiple occasions. Most recently, in Lincoln, they opened for Te Deum, a professional choir from the Kansas City area. “I've been blessed with the most amazing students, and I am always glad to show them off,” he said.

God Himself Is With Us While he’s never worn the title of “minister” in a professional setting, DR has been a minister to thousands through his work in music. Part of daily choir rehearsal is dedicated to devotional and prayer time, and his students know that as much as he wants them to create great art, he isn’t striving for perfection, but rather for the glory of God. The music he selects for the choir each year is chosen thoughtfully, both for the message to his students and to their audiences. He often selects pieces that include scripture because he knows the words will imprint on the singers’ hearts in a way no sermon ever could.

In church settings, he has been a deacon, elder, teacher, worship leader, guest preacher, and more, plugging in wherever he is asked. He also regularly speaks in Chapel at York University and is always available to students in need of counsel or prayer. Recently, he earned a Certificate

in Spiritual Direction through the Selah program at Abilene Christian University and is excited to be exploring his faith in new ways, but also recognizes that he didn’t need a certificate or a job title in order to minister.

Tisa Lawrence-Krekel '16 reflected that when she went through hard times as a student and for years after as a music educator, DR was a constant champion and voice of wisdom in her personal and professional life. He has played that role for so many of his students, celebrating their successes, praying for them, and offering counsel as needed, whether they earned a music degree or not. He cares about their musical and professional endeavors, but not nearly as much as he cares about their relationship with Jesus.

DR transitioned from his role at the end of the 2026 school year and has taken on new responsibilities across campus. His commitment to serving others remains unchanged as he continues to invest in the York community. DR says that on his headstone, he wants to be remembered for just a few things: servant of God, husband to Sue, dad to Matthew and Mitchell, Papa to his grandchildren, and conductor of the York choir. “If that is all people know of me, that is enough,” he said.

And so a grateful York University choral community says to you, Dr. Roush, “The Lord bless you and keep you, the Lord makes his face shine upon you, and give you peace.” n *Headings are titles of Roush’s favorite hymns to lead in worship

A Legacy Reborn: York University Celebrates 70 Years of History and a Record-Breaking Inaugural YU Day. York University recently marked a historic milestone, bridging its storied past with a vibrant future through the inaugural York University Day. Held on March 20, 2026, the event served as both a celebration of the school’s "rebirth" 70 years ago and a powerful demonstration of the community's ongoing support.

The significance of March 20 dates back to 1956, a pivotal moment in the institution's history. While York University was originally founded in 1890, it faced a period of profound loss after a 1951 fire destroyed Old Main, the campus's largest building. This disaster eventually led the school to close its doors in 1954. However, on March 20, 1956, a historic meeting occurred between the Evangelical United Brethren (EUB) Church board and the Churches of Christ board. The EUB board graciously chose to step down, transferring leadership to a new board that reopened the institution 16

as a Church of Christ-affiliated college. President Westbrook noted that these events "breathed new life" into the school, forming the foundation of the university known today.

To honor this 70-year legacy, the university established York University Day as a new annual tradition. The inaugural celebration was characterized by an "extraordinary" spirit on campus and perfect spring weather. Students and staff enjoyed a festive atmosphere that included a visiting mobile coffee trailer, Retro Roast Coffee, which served specially priced drinks courtesy of the Alumni Love group.

The campus cafeteria joined the festivities with a special menu and a 70-year anniversary cake.

Beyond the celebration, the day focused on reflection and community engagement. During daily chapel, Dr. Jared Pack shared a history lesson that highlighted the school's 1956 rebirth, setting a tone of gratitude. Students also participated in a weeklong residence hall competition, vying for a new ping-pong table, while faculty and staff distributed treats in classrooms.

The impact of the day extended far beyond the campus gates through a massive fundraising effort. A coalition of Panthers nationwide rallied to support the York University Scholarship Fund.

An initial $75,000 matching gift challenge was not only met but exceeded by $15,000. By the end of the celebration, the university had raised a total of $165,000. While the majority of these funds are dedicated to student scholarships, donations also supported Alumni Love and the Smith and Mary Kite Center for Ministry, which broke ground on May 1. (see page 4) Executive Vice President Jared Stark expressed immense pride in the event's success, stating that the goal was to create a day where students, employees, alumni and friends could celebrate York University together. As this new tradition takes root, it serves as a reminder of God’s provisions and the university's enduring commitment to Christ-centered education. Supporters are already encouraged to mark their calendars for the next celebration on March 20, 2027. n

For Bryan Fojtasek, leadership is not a destination but a continuous journey of "walking slowly through the crowd."

As the Pulpit Minister at Southwest Church of Christ in Omaha, Nebraska, Bryan is no stranger to the demands of ministry. With a career spanning over 15 years and a deep academic background—including a Bachelor of Arts from Pepperdine University and a Master of Arts from Princeton Theological Seminary—one might assume his formal education was complete. However, Bryan’s commitment to his congregation and his personal growth led him back to the classroom, this time as a student in the Master of Arts in Organizational and Global Leadership (MOL) program through York University Online.

Bryan’s transition to the Midwest in February 2024 marked a significant chapter for his family, including his wife, Traci, and their three children: Logan, Dylan, and Avery. While his previous training in Christian Education and Formation provided a solid theological foundation, Bryan realized there was still much to learn about leadership.

“I began to realize that as helpful as my undergraduate and seminary degrees were for training me to study the Bible, preach sermons, and teach classes, there was a gap in my training when it came to understanding the relational side of ministry—leading teams, navigating conflict, working through crises, and things like that.”

The decision to choose York University was both strategic and communal. Southwest Church of Christ has a long history with York, and Bryan saw his enrollment as a way to "strengthen the relationship" between the local church and Christian higher education. “I believe God’s Kingdom wins when like-minded Christians in different types of organizations partner together to glorify Him, love others, and make disciples,” shared Bryan. “We need Christian colleges educating young people from a faith-centered, academically rigorous perspective. We need local churches who know their communities and equip their members to love and serve the city in the name of Jesus. We need missionaries who answer the call to go into all the world to make disciples. And we need parachurch organizations and Christian nonprofits that become experts in one aspect of what the world needs and how Christians can rise to the occasion.”

Within the MOL program, Bryan has focused on the Ministry Growth and Development concentration. This specialized track explores how congregations adapt to change and implement strategies for "sustained vitality and renewal." One of Bryan’s most significant "aha!" moments 18

came through the study of leadership as an "iceberg"—the idea that a leader’s effectiveness depends far more on their "inner life" (heart, character, and attitudes) than the visible techniques they use. “It might seem cliché, but one of the most important leadership insights I’ve gained is simply the fact that you have to value and invest in people more than you focus on your programs, facilities, or the church as an organization.”

Bryan finds deep value in the cohort-based learning environment at York, where he engages with professionals from diverse fields like medicine and the private sector, all wrestling with how to apply leadership principles to their unique contexts. “It was great to receive feedback on what I was learning and how I was understanding the material from people outside of the ministry context, simply because the diversity of thought and experience provided a more wellrounded discussion.”

Balancing the roles of husband, father, and minister while pursuing a graduate degree is a monumental task, but Bryan views this season of growth as essential for any leader who wishes to remain effective in a shifting culture. “Even though no one needs a degree or a title to serve God faithfully and make an impact in His Kingdom, the skills, knowledge, and experiences one gains through a formal program like this could be an important next step. Ministry is changing, our churches are changing, and the communities we live in are changing. And because of that, our roles as leaders have to change, too. We need to develop new skills, gain new insights, and become more well-rounded in our approach to ministry.”

For Bryan, that growth ultimately comes back to people.

While he believes leaders should move with purpose and intentionality rather than wander aimlessly, he has also learned that effective leadership requires slowing down enough to truly know, serve, and walk alongside those they lead—being present, building relationships, and investing in people along the way.

Through his pursuit of the MOL degree, Bryan Fojtasek is not simply earning another credential. He is becoming the kind of leader who walks with both purpose and patience, equipping himself—and his church—for a lifetime of faithful, Christ-centered leadership. n

THE VICTORY EXPRESS Remembering Victor Rodriguez

Born in a one-room house to poor parents on December 23, 1931, Victor Rodriguez was the oldest of 16 children. Like his parents, Victor was expected to work in the fields to help support his family. That included missing school. It didn’t take long for him to realize the importance of an education, and he was allowed to stay in school and earn his high school diploma.

Hearing the call to serve while looking for work, Victor joined the United States Air Force in 1951 and was trained as an aircraft mechanic, working on bombers. He was deployed to Korea in 1952 and was promoted to crew chief on an F-86 Sabre Jet. Many of the things he learned in the Air Force would serve him later in life, working with kids and directing camps.

On April 18, 1954, while stationed at George Air Force Base in Victorville, Calif., Victor and his friend Buddy Fritz were baptized into Christ while visiting the church in Barstow. From that day forward, the focus of his life was serving the Lord and bringing souls to Christ. He was honorably discharged in 1954 and moved back to his home state of Colorado.

It was in Denver that Victor first heard about a college that recently reopened its doors in Nebraska and was looking for missionminded students to fill its classrooms. The person speaking at his

congregation was Dale Larsen, then vice president of York College.

Besides being impressed with the personal attention from Larsen, Victor liked what he heard, and at the age of twenty-seven, enrolled as a YC Bible major in January of 1958.

At Victor’s celebration of life service this past spring, his son Tim recalled a story he had heard his dad tell many times about a Bible course he was enrolled in at York called Personal Evangelism. The class had a profound impact on him, requiring scripture memorization as a significant part of the student’s grade.

“One of the first quizzes, he got 3 out of 4 correct, but the girls in the class got 4 out of 4 and that affected him,” Tim said. “He knew that if he was going to be a preacher, he had to do better, so he started testing his memory by writing them down. If he didn’t get it right, he would do it over and over. He never missed another verse. It was in this class where he developed the themes and topics for papers and the 150 verses that were later to be part of his staff requirements.”

In addition to his academic pursuits, Victor was the editor of the Crusader yearbook, a member of the “Y” Club, vice president of the Colorado Club, and a forward on Coach Colis Campbell’s basketball team. “York was a special place for him,” recalled Tim. “He believed p

on serving as missionaries in Medellin, Colombia, God had other plans. They would spend more than two decades in bilingual and Spanish speaking churches in California before moving in 1987 to Lake Havasu City, Ariz., where Victor preached ten years for the Church of Christ on North Palo Verde Boulevard.

But if you know the Rodriguez family, including their children Sharon '86 and Tim, you know a huge portion of their life’s mission was and is the youth of America. Together, they formed and led a youth evangelistic team (STAFF), traveling the summers in the Victory Express, directing church camps, vacation Bible schools, and gospel meetings across the country. According to Sharon and Tim, the team made up of high school and college kids had to memorize 150 scriptures, write 20 theme papers on Biblical topics such as faith, love, hope, sin, etc., and pass an intense Bible test. They learned how to study, pray, fast, develop lessons, talk to people, be leaders, and camp counselors.

Tracy (Rutherford '82) Sumner was blessed to join STAFF in the summer of 1978 and posted a Facebook note at Victor’s passing: “The experience 48 years ago added to my foundation the basic belief structure that I have been able to cling to all these years! I still use that Thompson Chain-Reference Bible with the color-coded verses, the writings in the margins, the torn pages and broken leather, BUT

in what they were doing, and for the rest of his life, he became an unofficial recruiter for them.”

Victor went on to graduate from Abilene Christian College, and while a student, attended the World Mission Workshop at Michigan Christian College. It was there he met a young lady named Charlotte Smith. They spent some time together and towards the end of the workshop, Victor asked Charlotte what she thought of Christian camps. She responded that her dad had been instrumental in starting Camp Deer Run in Texas and she thought they were great. Victor said, “Okay, would you like to come work at a Christian camp that I am directing in New Mexico?”

Charlotte accepted the invitation, and Victor put her in charge of the girls and observed how they responded to her. Tim said, “He watched how she interacted with the girls and noticed that the younger ones would fight to be the one to hold her hand. He knew she was the one.”

Victor and Charlotte were married February 21, 1964, beginning their life of ministry together. Although their sights were set early

it has been my lifeline! I met some wonderful people who still, to this day, touch my life with the power of their lives, with their notes and messages, with a special bond that was created all those years ago… and so, by the actions of one man, many were touched. And I am but one.”

Victor directed camps all over the western United States: Camp Blue Haven in New Mexico, Yellowstone Bible camp in Montana, Camp Victory, Camp Daybreak, and Camp Shenandoah West in California, and Show Low Bible Camp and Family Missions week at Copper Basin Bible Camp, both in Arizona. Besides being well known for his work with summer camps and youth rallies, Victor would bring a busload of young people from California each year to the York College Lectureship. That effort spanned three decades and resulted in many students attending York College.

In 1975, Victor was named the York College Outstanding Alumnus of the Year. Executive Vice President Joe K. Alley presented the award, saying, “Vic has probably done more to encourage young people to come to York than any other alumnus.”

One of those students who rode the bus from San Jose to York was David Favre '81. “I wouldn’t have known about York College had it not been for Victor Rodriguez and his passion for Christian education,” said David. “He impacted the lives of so many young people in California and elsewhere, seeking to help them draw near to the Lord that he dearly loved and served.” n

Second Chances, First Dates, and 56 Years Together A huge blessing in my role with alumni relations is visiting churches as I travel across the country. While my wife and I were on vacation in Florida a few months ago, Tommy '69 and Mary (Touchton '70) Dyer invited us to worship with them at the Fernandina Beach Church of Christ, where Tommy serves as an elder. We were welcomed with open arms and immediately felt at home, even rekindling a 35-year friendship with the preacher, Brian Jarvis, who taught at York’s Soul Quest in the 90s. The Dyers treated us to lunch after services before inviting us to their home for strawberry pie and coffee.

What wonderful conversation and stories! Tommy was recruited out of Dallas by Coach Bob Thomas to play basketball for the Panthers. With Tommy’s grandmother, TB (Myrtle) Thompson, being York’s first dean of women in 1956, he had long been familiar with the college. Mary’s connection with York also began in those early years when her oldest brother, Paul Touchton '61, was recruited from Jacksonville, Fla., on a basketball scholarship.

Ryan '62, Onita '65, Iris '66, and Mary '70 all followed suit, making it 5-for-5 in the Touchton household.

Despite the YC family history and name recognition, it wasn’t smooth sailing for Tommy. He told on himself, confessing he did not behave during his freshman year at York, even to the point of being suspended for a week during his second semester. “It was the longest drive in my Dodge Dart to home in Northern Texas and back in my life,” Tommy said. When he came back to campus, something felt off. “Near the end of the semester, I told Coach Thomas I wasn’t coming back in the fall, but within 24 hours, I changed my mind and the coach was happy to give me a second chance.”

He made the most of the opportunity and shaped up during his sophomore year, catching the attention of a freshman cheerleader

who had been watching him play tennis in front of her dorm. “One gal told Mary, ‘You don’t want to date that guy,’ because in the previous year, I wasn’t a great guy,” Tommy recalled. But he had an interest in Mary as well and was determined to see where it might lead.

A However, a Bclassmate we’ll simply call “Roger” got the jump on Tommy and called on Mary just ahead of him. Although Mary was hoping that the guy on the other end of the dorm phone was Tommy, she accepted Roger’s invitation to accompany him to worship. Back then, there were two evening times to meet, and they were all set to attend the early service. Later that day, Tommy asked Mary to go with him to the second service and she agreed, hoping to pull off the “double-date” without the guys finding out.

But it just so happened, Tommy and Roger were playing 9 C holes of golf together that afternoon. About the second hole, Roger mentioned his evening date with Mary, not knowing Tommy had similar plans. “I never played golf more slowly than I did that day,” Tommy said with a laugh. “It was so slow, Roger had to quit on the seventh hole so he could get ready.” When Tommy took Mary on their worship date, he asked her what the first song was and then the second. “She caught on quickly that I knew about her first date with Roger.” Tommy’s smile widened as he said triumphantly, “That was the end of Roger dating Mary Touchton!”

In May, Tommy and Mary were able to relive a small portion of their York experience, spending a week on campus for RoundUp, taking Bible classes together, eating in the Caf ’, and walking familiar paths. Second chances, first dates, and 56 wonderful years together.

As Paul Harvey used to say, “and now you know the rest of the story.” n

Ed McLoud of Overland Park, Kan., passed from this life on December 14, 2025, at the age of 90. Ed served on the York University Board of Trustees for 32 years, including 12 years as chair from 1994 to 2006. He was president of Systronics, Inc. in Olathe, Kans., for several decades and brought his business expertise to his leadership of the board. He is survived by his sons, Dennis '76, Mike and Kurt.

Steve Belden of Murchison, Texas, passed from this life on February 24, 2026, at the age of 70.

Steve served on the York University Board of Trustees for 26 years, the majority of which as secretary. Steve is survived by his wife Michele and children, Matt and Madi.

There will be a celebration of life during YU Homecoming at his 50-year class reunion: October 24, from 11-noon in the Prayer Chapel.

Dan Cole of York, Neb., passed away on April 10, 2026, at the age of 61. Dan and his wife, Laura '95, attended YU and served as dorm parents for two years. After several years away from York, he returned to serve as HR manager for 15 years before retiring in May 2025. Jeannette Scott of Hartwell, Ga., passed from this life on May 21, 2026, at the age of 94. A former member of the York University faculty, Mrs. Scott taught home economics for several years alongside her husband, Mr. Robert Scott, who taught history. WINTER & SPRING ATHLETIC HIGHLIGHTS ESPORTS York Esports achieved historic success during the 2025-2026 season, defined by championships and national rankings. Marvel Rivals led the program, securing 1st place at the KCAC Invitational and NECC Division 8, while finishing 3rd nationally. Their dominance was highlighted by seven 3-0 sweeps against programs like Illinois State and Mercyhurst, plus a 4-0 victory over Champlain College. The roster included Makai Schwarz, Dylan Straatmann, Reese Leonard, Callum Young, Terry Dilliard, Mason Ogle, Joseph Hobbs, and Josh Clark.

Overwatch also excelled, claiming 1st place in NECC Division 8 and a national top-eight finish. They recorded eight 3-0 shutouts and a 4-0 win against the University of North Dakota. This team featured Lennon Kimball, Harry Yunevich, Reese Leonard, Mason Ogle, Joseph Hobbs, and Gabe Barbosa.

Additionally, Super Smash Bros.

Ultimate (Josh Clark, Nate Jones, Addie Leonard, Jason Dopps) finished as KCAC runners-up, and Fortnite (Harry Yunevich, Jordan Herring, Fischer Wood, Nayana Vahrenkamp) ranked 23rd nationally.

BASEBALL The Panthers made strides throughout the season, earning a berth in the KCAC Tournament 28

behind timely offense and solid defense. Nathan Eisenmenger headlined individual feats with a three-home run, six-RBI game, while Isaac Gomez recorded a perfect 5-for-5 performance. Sam Hodoly delivered a walk-off squeeze bunt and a grand slam during a five-RBI outing. Defensively, Bryce Woodard earned a Gold Glove with a .944 fielding percentage. On the mound, Elvin Ramos secured All-KCAC Third Team honors, leading the team with 81 strikeouts over 71 innings.

The season also saw the varsity reserve squad set a new school record with 17 wins, surpassing the previous mark of 11 victories.

MEN’S BASKETBALL The Panthers showed flashes of offensive firepower and individual excellence throughout the season.

All-KCAC senior Jadin Johnson (YU Male Student Athlete of the Year) averaged 17.9 points and 3.4 assists per game. Eli Nutting anchored the interior with a 16-rebound doubledouble, while Jaxon Kilmurry delivered a 30-point game.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL The women's basketball team featured an offense anchored by senior guard Destiny Shepherd.

Shepherd earned All-KCAC honors, leading the conference with 19.1 points per game and surpassing 1,000 career collegiate points. She shot an efficient 42.4% from the field

and 79.9% from the charity stripe.

The team showcased explosive potential, reaching a season-high 100 points while recording 21 steals in a single game. Alesia Rand and Alliyana Page provided interior strength with multiple doubledoubles, while Olivia Adams secured a season-best 15 rebounds.

MEN’S GOLF Francisco Gouveia anchored a strong season for the Panthers, capturing medalist honors at the York Invite with a 13-over-par performance as the team posted a +88. He continued to lead the squad throughout the year, highlighted by a 6-over round at the Doane Invite.

Tanner Simmerman delivered a strong finish in the spring, carding a 3-over at the KCAC Championship.

WOMEN’S GOLF Sydney Fernandez led the Panthers with a pair of standout performances, placing second at the CSM Classic with a 15-overpar score and fourth at the Baker Invitational at +34. Alba Kindelan added a top-25 finish at the Lark Invitational. The team showed significant improvement throughout the season, lowering its score from +179 in the fall to +104 at the Lincoln Invitational in the spring.

CHEER The Panthers overcame earlyseason injuries to compete in

DANCE The Panthers continued to raise the standard for the program, competing in nine events and setting a new school record with a score of 75.54 while averaging 72.11 points on the season. Olivia Monk earned All-KCAC Second Team and Champion of Character honors, and Reagan Branum was named AllKCAC Honorable Mention.

Katy Soucek highlighted the outdoor season by winning the KCAC discus title with a throw of 44.72 meters before earning the NCCAA National Championship and setting a new school record.

She concluded her remarkable campaign with a 13th-place finish at the NAIA National Championships.

SOFTBALL The Panthers' season featured standout individual achievements and explosive offensive displays.

Moriah Hoshowski led the team with a stellar .379 batting average.

Taylor Jones powered the lineup with 31 RBIs and three home runs.

Shortstop Brooklyn Hadl earned a Gold Glove, recording 118 assists. In the circle, Ashley Falk tossed 107.2 innings with a team-best 3.12 ERA. York’s offense notably peaked during a dominant 17-3 victory over Bethel.

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD The Panthers showed depth and versatility across both indoor and outdoor seasons. Freshman Conner Neuhalfen led the Panthers with a silver medal in the 60m (7.06).

The team notably swept the top five spots in the 400m at the Loper Tune-up . Zion Atwood contributed a ninth-place heptathlon finish (3,511 points) and an eighth-place pole vault at the KCAC Championships, where the team tied for 12th place.

During the outdoor season, Atwood excelled by securing sixth place in the decathlon (4,173 points) at the NCCAA National Championship. Neuhalfen earned silver medals in the 100m (10.88) and 200m (22.16) during the regular season. Drew Lugafet added fourthplace finishes in both the 5,000m and 10,000m.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD During the indoor season, Cierra Dringman led the squad, finishing sixth in the 600m and eighth in

WOMEN’S WRESTLING The York University women’s wrestling team showcased incredible talent this season. Jill High led the way with prestigious firstplace titles at the Spire Classic and York Open. Jocelyn Prado also triumphed, capturing the 103-lb title at the Doane Open. Piper Kunnap delivered strong runner-up performances in California and Iowa.

Collectively, the Panthers secured a gritty dual win over Midland and earned 35 points at the KCAC Championships.

A HISTORIC CAREER Senior guard Destiny Shepherd delivered one of the most memorable individual seasons in recent York women’s basketball history during the 2025-26 season. The York native became the program’s newest 1,000-point scorer on Jan. 28, reaching the milestone during a careerhigh 35-point performance against Bethany. She established herself as one of the KCAC’s premier offensive players, leading the conference in scoring at 19.1 points per game and totaling 535 points on the season.

After transferring to York, Shepherd embraced the Panthers’ culture and developed into a leader on and off the court. Her relentless work ethic and consistent production earned All-KCAC Honorable Mention honors, YU Female Athlete of the Year recognition, and made her a key figure in the program’s success.

Shepherd also excelled in the classroom, earning NAIA ScholarAthlete recognition. Her legacy will be remembered through both her accomplishments and the example she set for future Panthers.

MADISON FIELDS '27

Madison’s journey to York University began with a leap of faith that took her far from the familiar lights of Las Vegas, Nevada.

When she first arrived on campus to study English with minors in Bible and history, she carried with her a nickname that had followed her from Girl Scouts to her volleyball teams: “Cookie."

Though she was known by this friendly moniker, Madison initially felt lost and terrified of the unknown path ahead of her. She had stepped out in faith to come to York, and while she found the campus gorgeous, the intense connectivity of the community felt "weird" to her at first—a sentiment that would eventually transform into her deepest love.

The core of Madison’s transformation was a significant shift in her identity and activities. Although she originally came to York to play volleyball, she eventually made the decision to step back from the sport. This change allowed her to re-engage with her creative side, leading her to join the choir and Celebration Singers. This transition was more than just a change in extracurriculars; it was a catalyst for her spiritual growth. By stepping away from the court and onto the choir risers, she grew significantly closer to Christ, noting that this spiritual evolution has changed her more than anything else during her college years.

Her faith journey reached a turning point during a Christian Faith and Life class, where she discovered her true purpose: “to love others as Christ loves me. I realized the Lord blessed me with a ginormous heart, and I am meant to love my brothers and sisters with it.” This realization has defined her time at York, as she’s become involved in nearly everything the campus has to offer, from Greek life and residence life to working for the athletic department.

Her goal became to leave a legacy of community, ensuring that no one ever felt they had no one to turn to. She made it her mission to invite people in and introduce them to others, embodying the "fierce love of Christ" she had received from the York community.

Madison’s experience has also been shaped by moments of wonder, such as her recent study abroad trip, where she saw her cousin in Switzerland and learned from professional guides.

Whether she was enjoying the outdoors on the campus swings or feeling at home in Eckman Hall, she’s remained grounded in the belief that giving control to God leads to amazing, unimaginable outcomes. As she approaches her last year on campus, the once-terrified girl has become a woman who understands that, while the future may be "scary" and full of unanswered questions, she can walk forward with confidence. Her journey stands as a testament to her own advice: “If we step out in faith and give all control to God, He will come through in amazing ways. There are things in my life now that I could have NEVER imagined, and all glory goes to God.”
