FROM THE PRESIDENT

A SEASON OF BLESSINGS As I reflect on our journey at York University, Anessa and I have so many things for which to be thankful. In addition to the warm welcome we have received from our students, colleagues, and alumni scattered throughout the globe, we have also had front-row seats to watch God’s blessings be showered upon our school and our mission.

We announced at the beginning of the semester that our enrollment numbers are trending in the right direction. Our new student enrollment increased to 178 this fall, and our retention also made significant improvement. Our on-campus students increased by 4%, and our total enrollment, including graduate and dual credit students, reached 604 students. Our mission is to transform lives through Christ-centered education, and we pursue this mission relentlessly with each student who passes through the YU system.

In this issue, you will see the many different ways we celebrate York University.

In September, we held the 22nd Presidential Inauguration. Moments like these are always about honoring the legacy of an institution, and we had a wonderful gathering of alumni, special guests, and delegates representing twelve different academic institutions, including all of the living presidents of York University and six of our sister schools from the Churches of Christ.

Inauguration was quickly followed by homecoming, which was especially touching for us to witness for the first time. The outpouring of love and excitement as the Panther nation gathered together for sweet reunions touched my heart deeply. We are truly blessed to have joined this special community. We hope you enjoy the homecoming stories that include alumni awards, performing arts hall of fame, athletic hall of fame awards, and the announcement of naming the Center for Ministry in honor of Smith and Mary Kite. At Homecoming, I also had the privilege of honoring Dr. Wayne White with the Bloom Award to commend him for his years of service as a trustee and chair of the board for the last six years. As Dr. White transitions to trustee emeritus, we welcome Richard James as our new chair. God has provided faithful, strong, and committed leadership for our future.

Of course, the YU story would not be complete without highlighting the good work of our faculty. We are blessed to have scholars who are leaders in their fields shaping the educational experiences of our future leaders in church and society. Sadly, we did say farewell to our cherished friend and co-worker, Dr. Tim McNeese, who received his heavenly reward. Dr. McNeese was an extraordinary storyteller, author, and churchman who has touched countless lives through his teaching, writing, and decades of service at the Happy Hollow Camp, in southwest Missouri.

We thank you for your continued prayers and support for the mission of York University. As you read through these engaging and encouraging pages, I ask that you read the stories reflectively and prayerfully. God is working and the Spirit is moving at York University, and we hope you will continue to stay strongly connected with this good work.

A LEGACY OF SERVICE: DR. WAYNE WHITE PASSES THE GAVEL TO RICHARD JAMES Dr. R. Wayne White '63 handed the chair’s gavel to Richard James '97 during the October 2025 meeting of York University’s board of trustees.

James has served in various board leadership roles since he was elected to serve in 2013. He is a trial lawyer and managing partner with DeVaughn James in Wichita, Kan., and was recently chosen president of the Kansas Trial Lawyers Association.

Richard and his wife Rachel (Nowlin '99) have two children, Abbey and Jackson, and are active in RICHARD JAMES their church and community.

White served York as a trustee for two separate terms, the first lasting from 1999 until 2005, and the second beginning in 2008.

He was elected chair in late 2019 and oversaw the selection of two presidents (Smith in 2020 and Westbrook in 2025). His time as chair also saw the board approve the transition from York College to York University.

As he concludes his time on the board, White shared, “It has been a great privilege to serve on York's board of trustees for 23 years, especially the last 6 years as board chair. Recent accomplishments of the board are due, in great part, to the gift of standing on the shoulders of past boards and their commitment to the school.”

White’s connection to York dates back to 1961, when his father, Edward White, joined the school’s faculty and Wayne enrolled as a freshman. Reflecting on his connections to the school, White said, “While it has been a long time since I graduated from York College, it is still a very special place for me. Both of my parents 4

worked here, I and one of my brothers graduated from here, another brother taught adjunct classes here, and a final brother once served as vice president for YC. So, for me, it is home! But it is time for younger minds to take the lead as York University charges into the future, and I am excited to see what that looks like.

I may be stepping down, but I am not stepping away.”

During Homecoming 2025, White received the Dale McNeill Bloom Award, a special recognition given to members of the YU community who have demonstrated remarkable acts of service that have a significant impact on the mission of the university.

While announcing White as the recipient of this award, President Westbrook said, “In the last year, I personally have witnessed his disarming and sagacious disposition that instills confidence, peace and trust as he works with others. He treats all people with dignity and respect. As his second term as chairman comes to an end, I cannot think of a better person to honor with the Bloom Award at this moment than Dr. Wayne White.”

A majority of the current board were added during White’s six years as chair. During this time, the number of women serving as trustees increased from 10% of the board in 2019 to 40% today. York University alumni comprise a little more than half of the board. n

CENTER FOR MINISTRY HOLDS FIRST INTERNSHIP FAIR & YOUTH MINISTRY WORKSHOP

In October, York University’s Smith and Mary Kite Center for Ministry held its first internship fair in the Campbell Activity Center.

Eleven churches and one camp from 10 states were represented, eager to share summer opportunities with students.

“As this was our first ministry fair, we were uncertain about what to expect, but we were really pleased with the outcome,” said Dr. Anessa Westbrook, co-executive director of the Kite Center for Ministry. “The students displayed genuine interest, and attendance at the event was strong.”

Students were able to learn more about a variety of internships, ranging from work in youth and children’s ministry, to camp counseling and church planting. Some positions were close to home—Camp Sonshine in Roca, Neb., was represented, as well as Nebraskan churches like Heartlands Church (Lincoln) and Southwest Church of Christ (Omaha). Churches from across the Midwest attended such as East Point Church of Christ (Wichita, Kan.), Eastside Church of Christ (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Elkhorn Church of Christ (Elkhorn, Wis.), Linder Road Church of Christ (Meridian, Iowa), Northpoint Christian Church (Spearfish, S.D.) and Odessa Church of Christ (Odessa, Mo.). Other churches came from as far as Grapevine, Texas, (Grapevine Church of Christ), Knoxville, Tenn., (West End Church of Christ) and Bowie, M.D., (Bowie Church of Christ).

According to Dr. Anessa Westbrook, recruiters “reported receiving promising leads, and they were encouraged by the level of student interest here at York.”

Coinciding with the fair, the Center for Ministry also hosted a free youth ministry workshop led by Dr. Dudley Chancey. The co-founder and director of Winterfest and the Intergenerational Faith Center, Dr. Chancey brought 25 years of youth ministry experience with him, as well as 25 years of experience in training youth ministers. Attendees were able to learn from him on topics such as spiritual development and teaching.

Looking forward, York University students can expect to attend events like these in the coming years. Westbrook emphasized that, “Both the Center for Ministry and the Bible department are committed to serving as a bridge between students and churches, helping students gain practical ministry experience opportunities through internships and visits to area churches.”

DR. TIM MCNEESE ENDOWMENT ANNOUNCED In October, York University and the Department of History announced the creation of the Dr. Tim McNeese Endowed Scholarship with awards to be designated for students majoring in history or history education. Dr. McNeese taught history at York from 1992 until his retirement in 2023, serving as chair of the History Department throughout his tenure.

Current chair of the YU History Department, Dr. B. Jared Pack said, “The History Department is incredibly honored to celebrate the legacy of Dr. McNeese in such a way. Throughout his tenure at York University, Dr. McNeese shaped the lives of thousands of students, and we could think of no better way to continue his impact than by creating a scholarship in his name to ensure that students wanting to study and teach history have the resources and education to do so.”

ENROLLMENT CONTINUES TO RISE This fall, York University welcomed 178 new students, marking the fifth year of increased new student enrollment. These students represent 30 countries and 38 states, as well as 68 Nebraska towns. They include 128 freshmen and 50 transfers, with nearly 70% of all new students choosing to major in either business or science.

Vice President for Enrollment Roni Miller attributed this year’s numbers to an increase in campus visits, noting that in the last year the admissions team has welcomed over 100 more students than the previous year. “It’s clear that when students experience our community firsthand, they want to be part of it,” Miller said. “That personal connection is what makes the difference.”

Although much of recruiting is done by athletic departments, Miller mentioned increased efforts to reach students through churches, youth rallies and performing arts events. “While athletics continues to be a vital part of our campus, we’re especially encouraged to see more nonathlete students choosing York University this year,” she said. “It reflects the strength of our academic programs, our vibrant campus life and the welcoming community that makes every student feel like they belong.”

President Tim Westbrook congratulated the efforts of enrollment staff and athletic coaches for this large incoming class, saying, “It is an exciting time of the year to welcome so many new students, both freshmen and transfers, to our YU community. We will do everything in our power to ensure that all of our students

have a wonderful experience at York University.”

In addition, Westbrook noted, “Earning a four-year degree from a Christian university is a significant goal for these students. Our staff and faculty are ready to walk alongside our students to help them attain success in every part of their YU experience, especially when it comes to completing their degrees.”

Westbrook emphasized the importance of a university education taught from a faith-based perspective: “When we bring people to York, our primary focus is our Christian mission: to be transformed through Christ-centered education, equipping students for lifelong service to God, family and society. We believe that a four-year liberal arts degree that includes a Christian worldview prepares students with holistic skills for having success in showing leadership in the workforce.”

Altogether, York University began the semester with 409 students on campus, a 4% increase from last year, and 95 students online pursuing graduate degrees. The total headcount is 528. In addition, the university has 76 high school students enrolled in dual-credit courses. n

TRUE BLUE CHALLENGE MEETS ITS GOAL York University concluded its “True Blue Challenge” on June 30. A group of anonymous donors set the goal for the True Blue Challenge by issuing a $500,000 challenge grant, pledging to match every gift made to fund YU Scholarships dollar for dollar. Thanks to the generosity of York University’s alumni and friends, the campaign successfully surpassed the target and raised $549,000. With the matching

funds, the campaign totaled an impactful $1,049,000!

The True Blue Challenge began in September 2024. Most donations were earmarked for the York University Scholarship Fund, but donors were also able to designate their gift for the Second Chance Education Program, a fund that benefits YU students at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women.

With an average scholarship award of at least $14,000, the funds raised by the True Blue Challenge will touch and change the lives of more than 70 students.

“Simply put, without your gifts, many students wouldn't have the chance to be here,” said Executive Vice President Jared Stark. “I know from my many years here that being at York University changes hearts and minds for Jesus. For those who come knowing Jesus, their faith is strengthened. For those raised never hearing about Jesus, they meet Him in a powerful way. Your gifts make all that possible.”

Though the True Blue Challenge has concluded, our Scholarship Fund is always a great way to provide for our students. By giving to the York University Scholarship Fund, you make a direct impact on the excellence and affordability of every student's York experience. n

John I. Baker III, associate professor of communication and theatre, wrote and directed the original script Jack Pumpkinhead in Oz that was performed at the Yorkshire Playhouse Children’s Theatre.

Dr. Garrett Best, chair of the Bible and ministry department, participated in three sessions at the annual meetings for the Institute for Biblical Research (IBR) and the Society of Biblical Literature (SBL) in Boston. He moderated the Revelation and Apocalyptic Literature section of the IBR, chaired the Gospels and Numismatics session at the SBL, and presented his paper “Conquest, Catastrophe, and Coins: A Numismatic Interpretation of the Four Horsemen in Revelation 6:1-8." Dr. Best also co-edited a festschrift, published in September, titled Teaching God’s Sons and Daughters: Essays in Honor of Allen Black.

Dr. Adrienne Dickson, adjunct instructor of music, was honored to serve as the alto soloist for Mozart's Requiem, first with Abendmusik in Lincoln and then with the Prague International Choral Festival in Prague, Czech Republic.

Mrs. Leanna Hawley '83, director of the Academic Resource Center at Levitt, has been appointed to the Kilgore Memorial Library Citizen's Library Advisory Board.

Josh Nething '06 was named head coach of the YU track & field and cross country programs in August.

Dr. Jared Pack, chair of the history department, organized and served on a roundtable discussion entitled “Teaching Transatlantic History” at the Transatlantic Studies Association annual conference in Lisbon, Portugal. This roundtable marked the launch of the Association’s new Committee on Teaching & Learning, where Dr. Pack was named co-chair.

Dr. Clark Roush, endowed chair for the performing arts and University Singers conductor, recently announced he will conclude his conducting career at the end of the 2026 spring semester, marking 40 years of transformative service to York University. He continues to make meaningful contributions on and beyond campus. A gifted writer and advocate for artistic expression, he authored I Lost My Anchor: A Creative Memoir of Grief, a

collection of poems and reflections written after the passing of his wife Sue in 2020.

He also completed the Selah Program in Spiritual Direction through the Siburt Institute at Abilene Christian University, becoming a certified spiritual director.

This past fall, Dr. Roush represented the York Creative District at the Nebraska Arts Council’s Creative District Assembly, and in November, he served as clinician and conductor for the Fort Kearney Conference Choral Festival while chairing the Arts and Learning Grants evaluation committee for the Nebraska Arts Council.

Dr. Greg Stevenson, (pictured above) the new professor of Bible and ministry at YU, presented an engaging lecture on “Magic & Early Christianity” at the Clayton Museum Fall Lecture in September. He also contributed to the Festschrift in Honor of Allen Black, publishing the essay “‘Not Even in Israel’: The Centurion’s Servant and the Dynamics of Faith in the Gospel of Luke” in Teaching God’s Sons and Daughters. Additionally, his essay “Monstrous Angels in Modern Culture” was published in the Oxford Handbook of Biblical Monsters (Oxford University Press).

Robert Vickrey, endowed chair of E.A. Levitt School of Business, served as one of three expert judges for the 2025 SPARK Small Business and Start-Up Pitch Contest, hosted by the York County Development Corporation in October.

Dr. Anessa Westbrook, co-executive director of the Kite Center for Ministry, contributed to the Festschrift in Honor of Allen Black, authoring the chapter “Adornment in Context: Illuminating the Passages on Womanhood in 1 Timothy” in Teaching God’s Sons and Daughters.

York University’s Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) program prepares individuals for professional management roles in healthcare, offering critical training in areas such as health systems, leadership, policy, and public health. Delivered fully online, the program adapts to demanding schedules without pulling students away from family and community commitments.

Now in her second year, Jordeyn completes her coursework anywhere life takes her—courtside in a gym, at home with her kids, or on the road traveling to Junior Olympics.

“I think the beauty of the program is that I can do it from anywhere – it hasn’t burdened our personal life or held me back from the things I need to do.”

For healthcare professionals considering a move into leadership, the career outlook is promising. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that individuals with a master’s in healthcare administration can earn a median annual salary exceeding $100,000, and demand for healthcare administrators continues to grow nationwide. York’s accredited program equips working professionals to step into those roles without sacrificing their current careers or family rhythms.

Jordeyn is married to Tree Burks '12, former York University men’s basketball coach and now director of student success and career support at the university. They have been married for ten years and share three children: Lakeyn (9), Asa (7), and Khyrie (4). Together, they remain deeply invested in the York community—a place that has shaped them and that they continue to serve, both on campus and in local healthcare. n

Jordeyn Burks’ career as a labor and delivery nurse anchors her deeply within the community of York. A York native, she completed her prerequisites at the University of Nebraska-Omaha and her nursing program at the University of Nebraska Medical Center before returning to serve at York General in 2016. For the past nine years, she has stood beside countless families during one of life’s most profound and transformative moments—the miracle of childbirth. Some of the families she meets once; many she meets again and again, walking with them through multiple births as their families grow and change. Those relationships, built over years of shared milestones, are the reason she pursued nursing.

Jordeyn knew early in life that she wanted to be a labor and delivery nurse. While her clinical role continues to fills her cup, she is also grateful for her split role in utilization review, an office-based position handling insurance, documentation and authorizations. The balance provides both professional variety and the flexible schedule she needs as a wife and mother of three.

When she decided to pursue a master’s degree in healthcare administration through York University, it wasn’t motivated by burnout or plans to leave the bedside. Instead, it was driven by a desire to better serve the patients and staff she works with every day. Like many adult learners, she initially worried about returning to graduate-level coursework—Can I really do this again?—but found that the classes immediately strengthened her daily practice.

Jordeyn shared much of her educational journey in a York University Online podcast interview released in August, where she reflected on balancing motherhood, shift work, and school while still feeling rooted in her purpose as a nurse.

In the episode, she expands on how the program has helped her think more strategically and lead confidently within her department.

Today, she’s already using the education to bridge the gap between clinical care and administration, implementing positive changes in her own department and preparing herself should she be led to an administrative position in the future.

“Whether it’s staying where I’m at or implementing changes into our department with things I learn through the course — God will lead me where He wants me to be.”

On Friday, September 26, York University celebrated the inauguration of its 22nd president, Dr. Timothy Westbrook.

President Westbrook and his wife, Dr. Anessa Westbrook, answered the call to come to York University earlier this year, bringing with them a history of excellence in higher education and mission work.

Following the pre-inaugural festivities on Thursday, which included a special prayer convocation held in YU’s Prayer Chapel, attendees gathered in the Campbell Activity Center Friday morning for the inauguration ceremony. Students, faculty, staff, alumni and guests came to witness the historic moment as President Westbrook officially stepped into his new role. Among the university’s sisterschools were representatives from Harding, Freed-Hardeman, Faulkner, Abilene Christian, Rochester Christian, and Oklahoma Christian.

During the ceremony, charges were given to Westbrook by various representatives of York University. Eliza Rohda ‘26 spoke on behalf of the student body, while Dr. Erin (Beske '94) DeHart gave the charge from faculty and staff. Dr. Bill Pink ‘87 represented 10

the alumni, before Board Chair Dr. R. Wayne White ‘63 gave his remarks on behalf of the trustees and placed the medallion of office on President Westbrook.

In his address to the university and its guests, President Westbrook encouraged his audience to “Learn and live the York Experience.” He highlighted York University’s history, detailing the long-held collaboration with the city of York and the Churches of Christ. In addition to the past, he discussed York University's present, emphasizing the memories that are being made right now as students, faculty and staff unite to pursue faith-based higher education.

“From the past, present, and into the future, we will urgently work together to keep our mission intact,” President Westbrook said.

“We will work together to ensure our students are prepared for the future. We will envision a bolder and bigger York University that cherishes the ‘York Experience’ of the past while not being afraid to create new ‘York Experiences’ for the future.” n

ALUMNI AWARDS The following alumni awards were presented during the 2025 Homecoming events.

Alumna of the Year SUSAN MCKEEVER

Susan (Killen '79) McKeever was honored as the York University Alumna of the Year for 2025 at Homecoming. Following her studies at York, Susan received her B.S. degree in biology with a chemistry minor and a degree in medical technology from Harding University.

She went on to complete her med tech training at Baptist Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. and also the specialist in blood banking program at Baptist Hospital in conjunction with the University of Tennessee.

Susan worked in the blood bank at Baptist Hospital in Memphis and later at Overland Park Regional Hospital and St. Luke’s Hospital in the Kansas City area. She also trained and worked as a pharmacy technician for Auburn Pharmacies after her children were grown.

More recently, Susan served as a forwarding agent for 13 years for the Team Expansion Evangelistic Ministries. Susan has been involved in several mission trips to the Agua Viva Children’s Home through the ministry of the Guatemala Children’s Mission. She taught children’s Bible classes and headed up VBS at church for several years.

During her acceptance speech, McKeever shared that she felt she received two specific gifts while attending York. The first was "how to serve by being shown the example of a servant's heart." She recalled witnessing professors serving the institution "with humility and sacrifice," citing instructors like Dr. Tom Schulz and Dr. Bob Lawrence, noting she saw teachers who faithfully "cared about me and served York University and York's students."

The second gift McKeever valued was "deep connection," emphasizing the lifelong friendships that were fostered by attending YU. This sense of community and service commitment led her to become actively involved in giving back to the institution. McKeever, along with her husband Kerry, have been involved in the Alumni & Friends Work Days for the last 16 years, maintaining close ties with friends she met while a student.

Reflecting on her volunteer work, McKeever shared that she and Elaine (Dara '79) Marcrom, may have "just about painted every outdoor metal surface on the main part of York's campus." She expressed that it has been "such a pleasure to be able to give back to York in such a small way," acknowledging that the Work Days ministry provides alumni an important outlet for service back to the school. McKeever has also formally served on the President’s Council at York University, demonstrating her continuous dedication to the mission of the institution.

She and Kerry will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary this December. They have three grown children, Chris, Katie and Kim. n 12

Young Alumni of the Year DR. JORDAN & JACQUELINE SIKES Jordan '03 and Jacqueline (Keesee '04) Sikes were celebrated as the co-recipients of York University’s Young Alumni of the Year award for 2025. During alumni chapel, Jordan thanked those who nominated them, noting he felt undeserving. He affirmed the profound impact YU had on their lives, stating that York University was a "pivotal place of growth" in their relationship with God and each other, leading to "eternal friendships and lasting memories."

Crucially, while at York, "We also gained each other."

Following their time at York, the couple built a life dedicated to family and service. Jordan furthered his education, earning his DPM and completing a foot and ankle surgical residency before becoming a podiatric surgeon and partner at the Foot and Ankle Center of Nebraska. Jacqueline manages their home and serves as a collaborative teacher for their four daughters: Chloe, Kaleah, Selah, and Nessa. They shared that one of the biggest ministries in their lives has been as parents, beginning with their three biological daughters, and then embracing foster care. Nessa, their first foster placement, was adopted in 2018, providing their family a great way to minister together and gain "perspective and awareness of the hurt and brokenness in our world."

Addressing the audience, Jordan offered strong advice, thanking their parents and grandparents for the legacy of faith and for ushering them into Christian education. Speaking to current and prospective students, he challenged common cultural sayings regarding life direction: "Many people would give the recommendation to follow your heart. That's horrible advice. Fix your eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith. Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness and let Jesus guide your heart."

Jordan concluded his reflections by stressing that no matter what professional path one pursues — doctor, lawyer, or teacher — "if you don't have Jesus, you have nothing." n

ALUMNI AWARDS

Performing Arts Hall of Fame Honorees The York University Performing Arts Hall of Fame inducted its inaugural class of four distinguished alumni on October 18, 2025.

Each honoree was recognized for their outstanding contributions to the performing arts during their college years at York University, as well as their ongoing activities and accomplishments since graduation.

Talley (Banning) Morrow ’98 received a degree in psychology from York University and maintained high involvement in music and theatre during her time there. She was instrumental to the music department's success, serving as a soprano section leader for the Concert Choir and being featured as a soloist. She was twice named the Outstanding Female member of the choir. As a music minor, she belonged to Chamber Singers, was selected for the first PRAISE group, and masterfully performed the challenging Aaron Copland settings of 12 Emily Dickinson poems for her recital. In theatre, Talley was featured in the musical productions of Camelot, The Taffetas, and Guys and Dolls, and she was selected as a Songfest Hostess twice. Since leaving York, Talley earned an M.A. in teaching, and currently teaches middle school and high school music in Saint Francis, Kansas, directing two choirs and three bands. Her work includes preparing students for four concerts annually, leading the band at 14 home events, and staging a homecoming pep rally for local nursing home residents. Talley also teaches speech, theater, and psychology for college credit.

Nate Magner ’01 graduated with an elementary education degree from York University and was active in both music and theatre programs. He participated in main stage productions and was involved in the early years of the Traveling Children’s Theatre.

Nate received the best actor award for his performance in The Diviners and the best supporting actor award for his role in Fools.

He was also recognized for his work as best assistant director on Steel Magnolias. He was a member of Alpha Psi Omega, the national theatre honor society. He took on the role of the Hairy Man in the Traveling Children’s Theatre’s inaugural show, Wiley and the Hairy Man. In music, Nate sang in the bass section of the Concert Choir for three years, and is credited with creating the ‘D-R’ moniker for Dr. Clark Roush. Nate has continued his engagement with the performing arts in Delta, Colorado, where he has been a 4th-grade teacher throughout his career. He introduces and directs a reader’s theater for his 4th graders every year, and for 15 years, he has codirected and co-emceed the school’s talent show, often participating in goofy skits with his students. Additionally, he performs in local

melodrama and dinner theater-murder mystery shows and serves as a vocalist and worship leader for the Delta Christian Church's worship team.

Sara Firm ’10 received dual degrees in vocal performance and vocal music education from York and was active in both music and theatre programs. Her theatre involvement included main stage productions, one-act shows, and the Traveling Children’s Theatre.

She was named best actress for her role in Whose Life is it Anyway and best supporting actress for her performance as the Mother in the one-act I Hate Mothers. Sara was a member of Alpha Psi Omega.

Her musical contributions were extensive: she was a soprano section leader, featured soloist, student conductor, and was named the Outstanding Member of the choir. She was the choreographer for Celebration Singers, a member of the female trio in Little Shop of Horrors, and represented York at NATS competitions. Today, Sara teaches music to 1st through 5th graders in Sanger, Texas.

Outside the classroom, she is active in Sweet Adelines International, performing with the six-time International Champion Rich-Tone Chorus, a 100-member women's chorus specializing in four-part acapella barbershop-style music. For the last four years, she has also served as a regional marketing coordinator for a six-state region of the Sweet Adelines.

Dr. Brianna (Bailey) Smith ’15 received degrees in vocal performance and vocal music education from York University.

Her soprano voice was vital to the Concert Choir, where she was a section leader, a featured soloist, and recognized as Outstanding Female. She accompanied the choir on the violin during a Spring Works performance. Brianna was also a Songfest Hostess, a member of Celebration Singers, and was named the student director of Songfest in 2015. In main stage theatre productions, she received the best actress award for her performance in W;t. For the Traveling Children’s Theatre, she played the giant’s wife in Jack and the Beanstalk. After graduating, Brianna became the first music department graduate to earn a doctoral degree, completing a Ph.D. in Vocal Pedagogy from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Her research concentrated on multidisciplinary voice care, specifically the collaborative practices between speech-language pathologists and voice teachers. She now runs a private voice studio committed to encouraging lifelong learning, building self-efficacy, and utilizing evidence-based practices. McGehee Hall: A Century of Transformation

1911

The Birth of a Campus Landmark The original structure was built in 1911. The basement, however, had been constructed earlier, in 1905, and temporarily roofed.

The building was originally constructed as a gymnasium.

It was promoted as having "the finest indoor track in Nebraska." The basketball court floor was hard maple of regulation size, and the facility included a running track, lockers, and showers. The running track was hung ten and a half feet above the floor, extended five and a half feet from the wall, and could provide ample room for two hundred or two hundred and fifty enthusiastic fans.

A Library Takes Shape

The structure was converted from a gymnasium to the Alumni Library. The conversion involved remodeling, costing approximately $2,500 to $2,700. The college alumni association assumed responsibility for financing the remodeling.

The conversion changed the original balcony track into twenty individual study booths. The south side of the balcony was enclosed for a debate room. The main floor was utilized for furniture and book shelves.

By 1931, the library was recognized as one of the best smaller college libraries in the Midwest boasting 11,000 volumes, making it an impressive and valuable resource for York College students.

Renovation and Recognition

The building was renamed McGehee Library in 1958 to honor Kathleen McGehee who served as the college librarian.

The renaming coincided with a $25,000 renovation that included the addition of a neo-classical façade and facility expansion. The renovation included an extension to the south providing additional rooms, restrooms, a new entrance and stairway, and a colonial-designed portico. The original library balcony was removed, and a second floor was constructed. The expansion housed five new classrooms, a biology laboratory, and a dedicated Bible reading room.

1969

Transition and Transformation

After the completion of the new Levitt Library in 1969, McGehee Hall was thoughtfully adapted to its current uses, including classrooms and other academic spaces, giving the building a renewed purpose for learning and community.

Over the years, McGehee Hall continued to adapt to the changing needs of campus life. The building steadily evolved — housing chemistry labs, serving as a student center, and even becoming home to a campus coffee shop, and later hosting the Spiritual Life Center.

Each new use reflected York University’s commitment to making the most of its spaces, ensuring that McGehee Hall remained a lively and meaningful part of student learning and community.

A New Chapter for McGehee Hall - Kite Center for Ministry From its beginnings as a gymnasium in 1911, through its transformation into the Alumni Library in 1929 and its renovation and renaming as McGehee Hall in 1958, the building has a long history of reinvention. Now, that pattern continues as McGehee Hall will enter a new chapter as the home of the newly established Kite Center for Ministry.

During Homecoming, York University announced that the Center for Ministry will be named to honor the lifelong Kingdom work of Smith and Mary Kite. The newly named Kite Center for Ministry will be housed in a renovated and expanded McGehee Hall, thanks to an anonymous donation.

The Kites were special friends of the university, sending three of their four sons through York: Syd ’62, Paul ’64, and David ’70, while Smith served for many years on the board of trustees. Their son, Dr. Terence Kite, is currently in his 28th year as professor of physics at York University and their granddaughter, Valene (Kite ’88) Roseke, is the assistant to the provost.

But the Kite’s legacy goes beyond their involvement in York University’s programs. Smith and Mary Kite were active members in the Church of Christ—preaching, teaching, leading, and serving wherever they could. With a passion for personal evangelism and holding countless gospel meetings throughout the Midwest, Smith taught and baptized hundreds of people into the Lord’s body.

Smith got his start in ministry early on. While growing up near Dallas, Texas, Smith and his brothers often participated in local quartets and sang in nearby churches. He learned to love music from a young age, and would eventually become a song leader at the Arlington Heights Church of Christ in South Fort

Worth. Over the following years, Smith would lead songs and preach at churches across Texas and the Midwest before he and Mary settled in Kearney, Nebraska. During the 16 years they were in Kearney, Smith and Mary built a strong community and came to love Nebraska. Smith always wanted to be with people, and often got to be present for the most significant moments in people’s lives as he performed many weddings and funerals across the state.

The introvert to Smith’s extrovert, Mary preferred to stay out of the limelight. As the family moved again and again across state lines, they raised their four sons to love and serve in all the churches they were a part of. Mary was an active supporter of Smith’s ministry, and the two balanced each other out. Mary participated in every church event, and taught many children’s classes over the years.

Smith was chosen as the commencement speaker for the university in 2008 and challenged graduates to, "Remember who you are. Live in such a manner that when you look into the eyes of Jesus, you will not be either ashamed or afraid… It’s time to consider the priorities of your life, that you can accomplish something worthwhile for your neighbor as well as yourself." At the conclusion of his remarks, Smith was surprised and moved when his family gathered around him to celebrate his own honorary bachelor's degree conferred on him from York University.

Smith and Mary loved God and served the church faithfully, bringing many to Christ throughout their lives. Together, Smith and Mary left a legacy that the Center for Ministry is proud to be named after. Further details about the renovation and future plans for the Kite Center for Ministry will be shared at a later date.

Meteorologists call it a Mesoscale Convective Vortex. An MCV occurs when extreme atmospheric moisture levels become embedded in a mid-level trough and then stall. In early July 2025, tropical storm Barry from the Atlantic and former Pacific hurricane, Flossie, settled into that trough over Kerr County in South-Central Texas. It looked like it would be a wet fourth of July weekend. How could anyone have known?

The towns of Hunt in the west, Ingram in the middle, and Kerrville, the county seat to the east, form the heart of the Hill Country region. Camping, youth camps, and outdoor recreation activities permeate the area, especially along the winding and peaceful Guadalupe River. Each summer, thousands grab tubes and float down its easy jaunt through the region.

In Ingram, 65% of the school district’s children have a family member in the camping industry. In the summer, the typical Kerr County population of 53,335 swells by tens of thousands as excited campers, families, and retirees flow into the area. Hill Country is Texas’ playground.

Hunt, Ingram, and Kerrville are the perfect hosts. So is the river.

Heavy rain on July 3 peaks in the early morning hours of July 4. Rainfall reaches two to four inches per hour. With totals exceeding 15-20 inches in some areas over the course of the day, it was the equivalent of a summer’s worth of precipitation. The limestone hillsides funnel water into the narrow valleys. The Guadalupe River swells.

In 45 minutes between 4 and 6 a.m., Kerrville’s section of the river climbs from a lazy 1.82 feet to over 26 feet and then to 32.5 feet in the next forty-five. Swift Water Rescue crews are dispatched. Emergency Management closes roads, issues evacuation orders, and urges residents to reach higher ground. Camp Mystic, a girls’ Christian summer camp upstream to the west of Hunt, is unaware of the river’s rise, and a cabin full of sleeping eight-year-old girls is swept away in their pajamas.

Anxiously, they await as each cold and wet child climbs off Aubrey’s bus and runs into a waiting dad's or mom’s arms.

Not every parent has a child: bewilderment and a sense of sad horror invade the night as the stunning reality sets in. “Seeing the look on their faces when their kid didn’t get off the last bus was tough on Aubrey. Can you imagine what they were feeling?” Ricky’s voice fades again. Twentyseven families stand alone.

Missing in the flood are Cooper’s high school soccer coach, Reece Zunker, his wife Paula, and their two young children, Lyle and Holland. Reece is highly respected and beloved by everyone. He was voted teacher of the year at Tivy High School this past year. Aubrey coaches one of the school's soccer teams alongside Reece. Everyone knows him. Cooper, a senior playing for Coach Zunker, and his teammates begin discussing a prayer vigil at the church.

Having served as the Kerrville church's youth minister, Ricky coordinates with other youth pastors in the community.

Ricky, having been a missionary kid in Argentina, grew up with soccer. He was an All-American at York, having played on his alma mater’s 1992 National Championship team.

For the past three seasons, every Thursday night before a game, the Tivy HS soccer team would meet in the chapel at the Kerrville Church of Christ, hear a message, and then share a meal together. It’s not a foreign gathering. This is family.

The thirty members of the boys’ soccer team, and two hundred others, gather to pray for the safety of the young Zunker family. As the large room fills with hugs and tears, an older gentleman and his wife approach Ricky. He does not recognize them.

Connections Minister at the Kerrville Church of Christ. For the past 10 years, Ricky and his wife, Cindy, a school nurse, have lived in Kerrville with their three children: Aubrey (25), Laurel (23), and son Cooper (18). Ricky served the church for nine years as the youth minister at KCC and has just taken on his new role leading worship and bringing people together. He’s about to hold them together.

Ricky and Cindy wake up to news of flooding on the river. Ricky and Cooper venture out to investigate. Parking where they can view the river below them, the shock of what they see stuns them. “There was a Fourth of July stage setup where the fireworks show would be that night,” Ricky states. “It wasn’t there. We look downstream and see it up in the Cypress trees.” No eye has seen what they see in 500 years. Maybe a thousand.

Rumors arrive of youth camps upriver west of Hunt being struck. Aubrey, an inclusion teacher at Tivy High, has just earned her Class B CDL with endorsements and the training necessary to drive one of the school district’s buses. She’s yet to haul a student. In the afternoon, her phone rings.

The caller asks if she can get to the school, grab a bus, and get to Camp La Junta to bring campers back to the elementary school parking lot in Ingram. It’s the rendezvous point, and anxious parents are arriving.

Aubrey doesn’t hesitate.

Driving over treacherous terrain and across the river’s damaged bridge and debris fields, the twelve drivers reach Camp La Junta and bring the 400 campers back. All campers climb off the bus and into their parents’ arms. They are all safe.

“That’s when they get the call that Camp Mystic needs them too,” Ricky remembers.

The twelve bus-driving heroes head out once more on the more than forty-fiveminute drive to the camp. Aubrey’s bus is the last bus to bring campers back. “She’d

radio’s Asma Khalid and Ashley Locke, “The man puts his hand on my shoulder and says, 'I’m Danny Zunker, and this is my wife, Caroline. We’re here because Reece is our boy, and we wanted to be with Reece’s kids.’”

Ricky, grateful they have come, continues, “Then… he looked me straight in the eyes and said, ‘They just found Reece’s body and we want you to tell the boys. We want to be here when you tell them that Reece and his family have been found. They didn’t make it.’” Ricky is stunned. The man finishes, “I’d like you to be the one to tell the kids.”

“That’s the hard stuff,” Ricky says. “having to tell the kids. Our prayer vigil turned into a memorial service. That was a hard night.”

“I want to magnify the gift Danny and Caroline gave our team,” Ricky continued.

“Imagine a 16 or 17-year-old boy, or even a 25-year-old man who’s played for Coach Zunker, to have gone through their social media at midnight in their room, alone, and seen Coach Zunker’s name. What Danny Zunker gave our team—that the boys were together—that was a gift we could not have planned. The Zunkers could not have planned. They had just heard of their son’s passing an hour before the gathering.

“So, man, it was a very hard night. A lot of tears shed in my family. For my 17-yearold son and some of his buddies, it was a really, really tough, tough night. But it was good we were together.”

The next morning, Sunday, July 6, there is a worship service to conduct. Ricky begins the opening song singing “Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father…” The morning is somber. Sober. Silent.

As the opening songs fade, Ricky clears the lectern by grabbing a box of tissues to make space for Senior Minister Scott Warner’s notes. Scott looks at Ricky and says, “Can I have those back?” Ricky hands him the box of Kleenex, and Scott smiles gently at Ricky and says, “Sorry, those are there on purpose.”

A week later, CBS News Correspondent Jason Allen will ask Ricky, “What was that first Sunday like?” Ricky will look away from Jason and exhale, “Oooh.” After a pause, Ricky says, “There was just heaviness in the air. And a lot of tears.” It’s why Scott needs the tissues back.

After over 90 minutes of prayers and songs and Scott’s comments, Ricky rises to lead the church in the closing song. Ricky has chosen “It is Well with My Soul,” and so he begins the familiar melody singing its first stanza: “When peace like a river…”

A community service, especially for grieving teens, is scheduled for Wednesday night at the high school’s football field.

Ricky’s nine years of youth ministry and networking with local youth ministers and pastors have prepared them to work together in this time of community need.

The youth group leaders are trying anything and everything to be together and minister to the “hurt.” People are grieving. Death has come near. Everyone knows someone who is no longer alive. One hundred and thirtyfive people lose their lives in the flood.

Thirty-seven are children.

In the CBS interview, the reporter asks Ricky, “Do you have people coming to you, and they just want to talk and get some comfort from you?”

“I’ve had a couple of conversations like that: ‘Why is this happening?’ ‘Why the little children?’ ‘Why in the middle of the night?’ I’ve had those conversations, and I’m quick to remind people: I don’t know.

I don’t know.”

Allen probes further, “It sounds like there may not be words after something like this to comfort anyone.”

“You don’t have to have the right answers,” Ricky replies, “because people just want to know they are not alone in this mess — in the hurt.” Ricky shifts his tone a bit as a week of wisdom has been poured into him, “I think that’s where we get into trouble — when we try to have all the right answers — but whenever we are with someone, whether we are trying to help or 22

just hurting with them, I see a lot of healing that happens.”

Ricky recalls the “Holy Silence” period after the flood. “There was just this silence.

It was the strangest thing. You didn’t blast your music. You didn’t honk your horn — you didn’t hear people honking their horns. No one spoke loudly. There was no loud laughter — just this silence. It was just silent. The first responders who walked the river and discovered the bodies will talk about this. I would tell you it was almost like there was a hush over us. It was beautiful and it was eerie.”

Weeks after the flood, Cooper is asked to speak at a Fellowship of Christian Athletes “Fields of Faith” event. The question is posed to the speakers, “How have you seen God move in all this?” Cooper tells the crowd he sees God move through his people caring for one another: driving across the country to use a chainsaw, helping with cleanup, or donating food, water, or supplies, to see his church give thirty thousand dollars to rebuild a well. Cooper says he is blessed to have worked alongside them.

Laurel, the 23-year-old Pruitt, is away at school, working on a doctorate in physical therapy. The straight-A student comes home for a weekend, and Ricky and Cindy ask her to go out to breakfast Saturday morning. “Sorry, Dad. I gotta go help some people.” She’s back at school on Monday.

They barely see her.

As the days and weeks have turned into months since the July 4th event, Ricky has become philosophical, reflective, thoughtful.

“This has really marked me. There is a before and after Ricky. There is a transformation of sorts in that the ‘July 3rd Ricky’ is insufficient for my community's needs right now. Who I was before cannot be who I am right now. It has changed who we have to be.

“It has also marked me when I see the river; there is an ounce of pain still in there.

There is a longing for the beauty that has been destroyed around it. People come and say, ‘Oh, look! It’s cleaned up! It’s looking so nice! You are all doing great: The kids are back in school; the football team is winning.

Man, everything is going great!’ The reality is that something has happened to us. And we all can’t put words to it.

“I remember the morning of the 6th.

I was at a traffic light on my way to the

building for service, and I remember feeling a twinge in my heart — I was trying to figure it out. I thought, ‘I am scared of what this is going to require of us as a church, and of me as a follower of Christ.’ I knew that something bigger was going to be required of us. There was a gasp in my heart going, ‘Man, I’m going to have to die more to myself,’ you know? One of those ‘He must become more and I must become less’ moments.’”

As Ricky talks, his words rare reminiscent of Todd Beamer's, the 9/11 Flight 93 passenger who, after he had prayed with fellow passengers, uttered the now heroic, “Let’s roll,” and then charged the plane’s cockpit. The courage to change and face the challenge comes from within Ricky and the people of the Hill Country.

“I remember being on the field for my first college soccer game at York,” Ricky recalls. “We were playing Hesston College.

I remember what looked like a really good soccer player lined up on my side. I was like, ‘Okay, this is it! And I am going to win tonight.’ There is this fear that arises in me, and then something else comes up inside me, and I say, ‘Let’s do it.’ There is something in me that says, ‘It’s time to go.

I’m in it to win it.’

“Some of that I learned by watching my dad meet challenges as a church leader; some of that comes from coaches who believed in me, or from old ladies at church who tell me I led the best song ever, even though I was way off-key.

“I say that, and maybe for that first week or so, that button was pushed, and I face the fear of what all this is going to require of me. I think that fear in that moment was when I realized I wasn’t the one who was going to be able to fix this. That I was going to have to be a part of something bigger in God’s kingdom and that I was going to have to be totally empowered by God’s Spirit.

And not just enjoy the gifts that God has given me and use them and enjoy them, but there was going to be some death that needed to happen in me to be able to let the Spirit become more in me.”

Four months have passed since the storm, and Ricky addresses the Kerrville church at the communion table: “As we come together as believers, we find him [God] in our midst. And it’s not ‘I believe in the human spirit.’ That’s not what it is. We look up in our communion and we

realize God has been with us.

“121 days ago, we woke up to a different world here in the Hill Country. One hundred nineteen days ago, I remember Steven’s words as he led us in communion that day, ’How could we have known?’ How could anyone have known?

“And in the brokenness.And in the confusion and the hurt and the pain and the ‘what’s next’ and ‘what do we do now?’ I want to remind us that as we took communion on July 6th, wondering ‘God, where are you? God, why so much pain?’

Today, just as when the disciples on the road to Emmaus recognized Jesus when he broke the bread, and they looked up and saw him, and realized the risen Savior had been walking with them the whole time. As we take the bread today, let us realize that he has been with us on this journey — we have not been left alone — he is not done with us — and he is with us.” n

I know first responders that did not sleep for days because they continued to serve this community in the weeks after the flood. I know countless teens that have sacrificed time and effort to feed first responders and clean up campgrounds. This has required more of us than we knew we had to offer one another. I've met people from across Texas and the USA who continue to compliment the way our Hill Country community served alongside them. There is something special about the people on this stretch of the Guadalupe. I'm blessed to be a part of what is happening here."

Daring to Follow One's Dream On February 9 of this year, I had my first and last conversation with Charles Freeman ’65. It was some of the most exciting and meaningful face-to-face minutes I have ever spent with a YC alumnus. From a previous phone conversation I had with his wife Lynne one month before, I knew it was going to be rich, so I recorded it in full — all four hours of it.

In the late 1950s, Charles was stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base about 10 miles outside Rapid City, S.D. He worked on B-52 Bombers as an engine specialist and attended the Rapid City Church of Christ. The congregation had a picnic one Sunday and he met Frank Riggs who was there on vacation from Odessa, Texas. Charles just so happened to mention that he had a dream of being a preacher one day but had been “fightin’ it.”

Riggs said, “Brother Freeman, I’m on the Board of Directors at York College, and if you want to be a preacher, I’ll get you a scholarship to go.” Charles found that interesting, but he wasn’t ready to commit. Years later, after a business venture gone poorly, a disastrous trailer house fire, and near deployment in the Bay of Pigs invasion, Charles had enough “fightin’ it” and decided it was time to see what God had in store for him. Charles called on brother Riggs to see about that scholarship.

In the fall of 1963, with five kids in tow, Charles, now 29, enrolled as a freshman Bible major at York College. The college had his housing ready — 2 units of the army barracks situated to the north of the old YC gymnasium, or today, the back half of the ARC at Levitt. Charles was very impressed with Dale and Raylene Larsen who had them over for dinner the very first night in town.

Early in the academic year, Charles was called into President Larsen’s office and was told that a 90-year-old anonymous donor, wanted to fund a ministerial student with a full scholarship. Larsen said he knew just the right individual and Charles had his tuition, fees, and books covered, besides the living quarters already being furnished. Millard Key, who had recently joined the college board, managed the Gamble’s store downtown and gave him a job. Charles was a full-time student, full-time dad, worked at Gamble’s, and preached on Sundays in small churches around Nebraska.

In our 4-hour conversation, Charles mentioned mentors and friendships with YC legends: Joe Alley, Howard Gurganus, Mabrey and Madge Miller, Colis and Dolores Campbell, Gayle Napier, Bob

Scott, the Larsens, Roger Hawley, Bob Jacobson, Harold Tandy, K.C. Thomas, and his sociology teacher Myrtle Thompson who he still remembered saying, “Disagreement is the way of achieving unity,” and, “Don’t argue before breakfast or after breakfast.”

A In the spring semester of his sophomore year at York, Charles B Rapid City, asking him to come up and preach received a call from for them even before he had finished his degree. He preached 3 years for the congregation, and using Jule Miller film strips in multiple Bible studies each week, Charles recalls the congregation growing from 89 to 135. He also helped start the church in Sturgis, Hot Springs, and Faith. In all, Charles preached for 38 years at five different churches.

Just as the anonymous donor helped brother Freeman 62 years ago, Charles, now 90, wanted to pay it forward, asking me what it C would take to give 20-full-ride Bible scholarships or if there was a naming opportunity available to honor Frank Riggs.

My bucket overflowing, I left the Freeman’s home in Asheville, N.C., with hopes of returning as often as could be arranged. But, as mentioned before, I was never able to speak to Charles again. On October 25, I did return to Asheville to speak at a celebration of life ceremony for Charles, who passed just two days shy of his 91st birthday. I told his YC story and the impact it made on his life, the life of his family, and the life of future students. His dear wife took me to lunch the following day and said, “I plan to honor Charles’ desire to bless York University… You don’t know how much your visit has meant to us.”

At times we get to see the seeds we plant grow and produce a harvest. Other times, we just have to trust God’s grand design and let Him give the increase in His time.

A cherished memory for me at the end of our one and only visit back in February was Charles sharing from memory 1 Cor. 15:57-58: “But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.”

Charles' storied legacy of "God has something better in store for me," is a testimony to the impact of a Bible scholarship and daring to follow one's dream. n

Dr. Tim McNeese '73, professor emeritus of history and author in residence, passed away on October 29, 2025. He is remembered as a beloved professor, colleague, mentor, and friend. After graduating from York, he spent sixteen years teaching in Missouri before joining the York University faculty in 1992. For decades, he taught U.S. History, Western Civilization, and Native American history, encouraging students to imagine the "lived experience of history" rather than just dates and events.

Dr. McNeese was a prolific writer, publishing over 130 books covering a wide range of topics in history His work, such as the biography Time in the Wilderness: The Formative Years of John “Black Jack” Pershing in the American West (2021), earned him recognition, including the Nebraska Book Award in Nonfiction Biography Honor in 2022. He also co-authored a pictorial history of York College for the school’s 125th anniversary in 2014.

Beyond the classroom, Dr. McNeese helped lead York's transition to a four-year institution and designed the bachelor’s degree program in history. He and his wife, Beverly, developed a domestic study program for students and were mainstays of the annual RoundUp program for senior campers. His commitment was recognized through numerous awards, including Alumnus of the Year (2009) and the Dale Larsen Teacher of Achievement Award (2002).

Colleagues and former students frequently cited his profound personal impact. Benjamin L. Clark ’02, a former student, shared that "Seeing Dr. McNeese's work up close as a historian, as a writer, and as someone who cared about others was foundational for me." Clark added that Dr. McNeese, "was always full of humor and humanity, and leaves a legacy that anyone would be proud of, not only in work but also in his family and faith."

Former history professor, Christi Lones reflected that "Tim was wickedly funny, adventurous, and sincere. No one else but Tim could make you laugh until you cry with the most mundane story all based on his flawless verbal delivery. He was a natural storyteller." Lones further noted that his "ability to see God in everything was an inspiration," which shaped the way he viewed history.

FALL ATHLETIC HIGHLIGHTS MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY The 2025 season began under new leadership as Josh Nething '06 was promoted to head coach of the program in August. The Panthers opened the season with Braden McNair pacing the team at the Augustana Twilight Classic (237th). Drew Lugafet achieved the top positional finish, securing 10th place at the Carol Swenson Invite.

Austin Oman paced the Panthers at the Bethel College Invitational, taking 58th. The team finished 11th AUBRIat PLUMMER the KCAC Championships, where Lugafet (47th), McNair (61st), and Oman (63rd) led the scoring effort.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY The women’s team, also led by Nething, achieved its best result by finishing second overall at the Carol Swenson Invite. Maddie Davis led the team there, finishing sixth, while Lilly Carr (9th) and Megan Johnston (10th) also secured top-ten places.

Davis also led the Panthers at the Bethel College Muthama-Rogers Invitational, where the team finished ninth. The season concluded at the KCAC Championships, where the team finished 11th overall. Lilly Carr paced the Panthers in 62nd place at the final meet.

ESPORTS The esports program, under new leader, Ethan Hughes '25, is delivering a standout season across multiple national conferences. The Overwatch 2 roster—Harry Yunevich, Gabe Barbosa, Tanner Lebs, Mason Ogle, Lennon Kimball, Reese Leonard, and Joseph Hobbs—is competing in both the ECAC and 28

NECC. The team has posted an impressive 7–1 record in NECC play and a strong 4–2 mark in the ECAC. Throughout the season, they have secured major wins over the University of Kentucky, the University of Delaware, Mizzou, Missouri State University, North Dakota State University, John Brown University, Nelson University, Oklahoma Baptist University, Bethany College, and the University of Olivet.

Ultimate squad is also excelling in ECAC competition. Team members Josh Clark, Addie Leonard, Jason Dopps, and Nate Jones have powered the group to a remarkable 6–1 record. Together, these teams are marking one of York University’s strongest esports seasons yet.

MEN'S SOCCER The men's soccer team achieved a strong 2025 campaign, opening the season with a 4-1 victory over Doane and compiling a record of 12-4-3 heading into the KCAC Semifinals. The team showcased significant offensive power, securing dominant wins such as a 5-0 shutout over Bethel and a 7-1 victory against Bethany, featuring multiple goals from players like Tim Schafer and Asaph Achero.

The highlight of the season came during the KCAC quarterfinals on November 4th, against Southwestern College. The match was a hard-fought battle, ending 1-1 in regulation after Tomas Viralhadas knotted the score early in the first half. In the fourth minute of overtime, Archford Manduvi netted the golden goal at the 93:25

mark, securing the 2-1 victory. The game-winner was described as a "highlight-reel bicycle kick" that sent the Panthers further into the postseason. York’s run ended shortly thereafter in the KCAC semifinals, falling 2-1 to top-ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan, concluding the season with a 12-5-3 record.

WOMEN'S SOCCER The women's soccer team concluded the 2025 campaign with a final record of 3-12-3 overall, including a 3-8-2 KCAC ledger.

The Panthers secured offensive victories such as a 7-0 shutout against Bethany and a 7-1 road win at Sterling. York also earned ties, including a 2-2 draw at Avila and a 1-1 draw at Ottawa, where Harumi Cornejo scored late. Offensive efforts were led by players like Gracie Reynolds, Samantha Bayer, and Ellie Reynolds. Goalkeeper Sofia Falcao posted eight saves in a loss to the fifth-ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan Eagles.

VOLLEYBALL The Panthers completed the season with a 13-21 overall record, competing closely in many matches.

Offensively, Brianna Lemke registered outstanding efforts, achieving 23 kills against Mount Marty and 21 kills versus Sterling, totaling more than 500 career kills.

Setter Kensey Clifton supplied a high of 38 assists, while Meadow Nusbaum recorded 25 assists.

Defensively, Valentina Jimenez anchored the team with a seasonhigh 36 digs in the win over Bethany.

Three Panthers were inducted into the York University Athletic Hall of Fame on October 18, 2025, during the Homecoming festivities.

Dr. Dickie Hill '64 was a standout multi-sport athlete during his time at York, serving as a playmaker and starter for the men's basketball team and dominating the tennis court as one of the program's most talented—though underexhibited—players. After transferring, Hill went on to play tennis at Abilene Christian College, climbing to the No. 1 position his senior year while losing just one match all season. He went on to earn his master's and doctorate, later serving as a professor and longtime faculty member at Abilene Christian. A devoted alumnus, Hill and his wife Onita (Touchton '65) established scholarships and have generously supported the university

2025 ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME for decades. He was instrumental in the creation of the Athletic Hall of Fame and served on the York University Board of Trustees. Dickie and Onita received York University's Alumni of the Year award in 2015.

Chris Luther '94 made a lasting impact on Panther athletics as a player, coach, and an administrator.

He played a key role in leading the men's soccer team to NSCAA National Championships in 1990 and 1992, earning NSCAA AllAmerican honors in 1991 and Honorable Mention in 1993.

Luther returned to coach the Panthers from 19982008 and 2009-2012, guiding the program through competitive MCAC seasons and several postseason runs.

As director of athletics from 2001 to 2008, he was twice named MCAC and Region IV Athletic Director of the Year. His leadership helped

elevate the athletic department and establish a culture of excellence that still resonates today.

Carrie (Berzins '13) Pine was a driving force for the women's soccer program from 2009 to 2012, helping lead the team to its firstever postseason appearance as a freshman. She earned multiple First Team AllConference awards, was a two-time NCCAA All-Region selection, and graduated as the program's all-time leader in goals, assists, and points. Pine also excelled in the classroom, earning NAIA and MCAC Scholar-Athlete honors, and was crowned Homecoming Queen.

Her talent, leadership, and dedication left a lasting legacy on and off the field.

BETHANY WRIGHT '26 Psychology and Softball

The incredible journey of Bethany Wright, a Christian counseling major, began far away in Canberra, Australia—a place she lovingly calls "the most beautiful country in the world." Her decision to move halfway across the globe was unexpected, marked by the humorous shock of landing in the U.S. winter wearing "Crocs without socks" after leaving the Aussie summer sun. Following a difficult year at a junior college where loneliness and struggle crept in, Bethany came to York seeking something different, admitting, "I would say I was quite nervous when I first came to York. I'm not very good at change.”

But when she visited York, everything shifted. She knew instantly it was where she needed to be, recognizing the special atmosphere that "actually seemed like there was a community here and just felt like a special campus.” York offered her a blank slate to redefine herself, empowering her to shed the "mask" she had worn. She’s found profound strength during this time, even getting a lion tattoo to commemorate the resilience it took to survive her past struggles and move forward. The community at York has surrounded her, helping her conquer new challenges, like anxiety and panic attacks, and reminding her that she is not defined by her fears.

Bethany’s growth at York isn't just personal; it is deep and spiritual.

She has found unconditional love and friendships that she believes will last a lifetime. Her values have blossomed into a singular mission: loving people well. This powerful mindset has guided her transformation, realizing that "at the end of the day, it doesn't really matter what other people think, but as long as I love people well, then that’s the most important thing."

Her academic life is equally enriching. Bethany loves her Bible classes, especially the "Women in the Bible" course. The class, taught by Dr. Garrett Best, opened her eyes to the radical, loving ways scripture elevates women. She called the course eye-opening because "I think that the way that the Bible is often portrayed is anti-women, and it really changed my perspective on the way that women are lifted up and the radicalness of how women are portrayed in the Bible and how Jesus sees women." Her Bible classes even led her on a transformative trip to Biblical sites in Turkey and Greece, where she dove deep into biblical history. “I’m really interested in Biblical studies. I just wish I was a sponge to soak everything in.”

As she prepares to head back to Australia, Bethany leaves behind a legacy built on compassion and service, hoping people at York will "remember the kindness that I try to show every day. To remember that I’m a kind person who wanted to make sure that everyone was heard, seen, and loved.” When asked why she recommends York, her answer is a beautiful reflection of the care she received: "The professors actually know you and they care about how you're doing and how they can help you succeed. And that’s not just in that class but in life." For Bethany, York isn’t just school—it is where she found her home, her confidence, and the strength of a lion.
