Faith and Gracie Torstensen walk back to their residence hall after a morning class. There weren’t many areas of campus that remained untouched by construction or renovations during the year including the overhaul of Thomas North bathrooms.

The newly purchased Twelfth Street Suites (formerly Mahoney House) 2 pressed into service in the spring of 2022 with the temporary were closing of Thomas North.

While out of service for the 2021-22 academic year, construction on Hulitt Hall was an everyday reminder of York College’s rich history and the blessings of a promising future as York University.

The 2021-22 Crusader Freeman Center was closed the last part of the spring semester to begin construction on a new men’s locker room, athletic offices, president’s suite, and the Brian Lemons Athletic Training Center.

Welcome to York College New Beginnings

N

ew beginnings, new friends, new schedules, a new home. Welcome to York College! It was a busy schedule the first few days, including academic advising, campus tours, and get-to-know-you sessions with Student Association, club reps, and YC Campus Ministries.

There were plenty of student volunteers to help make a good first impression and kick start the year. Genesis provided a comprehensive orientation to college life.

It also introduced students to the community of York thanks to Panther Prowl and to various YC families who were willing to host a meal in their home.

Missing but not missed were the face masks that had become the norm.

Replaced by smiling faces and laughter, the campus was once again brought to life with the beginning of a new academic year.

Block Party Family Time

T

he annual Back to School Block Party on Kiplinger Avenue Tuesday evening concluded the Genesis activities. Planned

by Jolene Herzog and Graham Marks, the weather couldn’t have been better and students packed the street for food, various activities, games, and treats.

For many of the returning students, this was their first opportunity to meet the incoming class as well as visit with the YC faculty and staff that dropped by. Relaxing in lawn chairs purchased by SAB or visiting on the street curb late into the evening was a great way to prep for the days ahead.

he first day of classes began early on Wednesday with faculty making introductions and going over their course syllabi. At 10 o’clock that morning, for the first time since March of 2020, the entire YC family was able to gather for chapel in the Campbell Center. Fists bumps, smiles, long hugs, and laughter were welcomed sights and sounds as the 131st year was officially declared open. A highlight for many was hearing Dr. Shane Mountjoy, YC provost, give his familiar greeting, “Gooood morning York College!”

President Sam Smith was introduced and talked for a few minutes about overcoming one’s fears and moving forward. Using the text from Joshua 1:9, he issued the challenge to, “Be strong; be courageous because this is going to be an amazing year!”

Everyone stood for the chiming of the bell, one for each of the 13 decades that York College has been operating; after which, President Smith prayed a blessing on the year.

WORTH THE WAIT

I

t took a little longer than most inaugurations to be realized, but it was worth the wait to celebrate the coronation of Dr. Sam Smith as the 21st president of York College. With minimal travel restrictions, many of Smith's family members, personal friends, and peers were able to attend the September ceremony - something that couldn't have transpired a year ago.

The inauguration took place in the Colis and Dolores Campbell Activity Center and drew an audience of more than 500 guests, including delegates from other academic institutions.

Besides the pomp and circumstance found in such occasions, the ceremony also served as a platform for a surprise reveal to the York College community.

During his address, President Smith announced the upcoming transition to university status in 2022. The news was met with much applause and excitement, especially by the students in attendance, and made for an unforgettable, historic moment.

The Return of Coronation

C

hoosing a social club to belong to can be a crucial step in one’s college experience, and putting your club’s best foot forward can be equally important to get a good mix of personalities and friendships for the year.

The “get-to-know-you” club events in the fall included a signing day during chapel at the various club booths.

After taking a cautionary hiatus last year, Club Coronation was back on schedule and didn’t disappoint with coordinated outfits, quickly choreographed moves, and lip-syncing attempts to bring honor to those chosen as sweethearts and beaus. ICC Liaison Anthony Aragon served as emcee and kept things moving between club presentations.

ix spellers enter; one speller leaves! At least the losers get a juice box. A riotous ride, complete with audience participation, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee was a delightful den of comedic genius. The Homecoming musical production was performed under the theatre and musical direction of Professor John I. Baker III, Professor Amy Fraser, and Dr. Clark Roush.

An eclectic group of six junior-high students compete for the spelling championship of a lifetime. Though it does follow the setup of a Bee, this Tony award-winning show intertwines incredible songs and hilarious background stories to create a work of comedic genius worthy of its spot on Broadway. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the musical shows the tweens spelling their way through a series of “words”, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake.

The Spelling Bee was the first musical production that Baker, Fraser and Roush have all collaborated on together. “Doing a musical theatre requires more work than doing a normal drama or music production,” explained Baker. “It allows students to grow three-fold learning experience in performing arts—acting, singing and movement (choreography).”

“I’ve enjoyed working with our students in a way that I don’t normally get to,” added Fraser, music and choreography director.

“I’m so pleased that not only our students get to experience this, but so do we.”

omecoming and Panther Days weekend kept everyone busy with the theatre department’s 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, women’s basketball game, chapel, choir concert, alumni reunions, and SyncFest. During halftime of the Lady Panthers’ basketball game in which they defeated Kansas Christian College 102-49, the York College Homecoming Court was introduced. This year’s king and queen are Alexandre Motta and Chailey Bollens. Chailey is a biology major from Orange County, Calif. She is a four-year starter on the women’s soccer team and was a 2020 KCAC Honorable Mention as well as a KCAC Scholar Athlete. Motta, an accounting/business administration major from Sao Paulo, Brazil, is a starter on the men’s soccer team and was a 2019 KCAC Honorable Mention as well as a KCAC Scholar Athlete. He is also involved with Esports, Residence Life, Kyodai Social Club and PBL. ​Senior candidates for queen were Sadie Carr of Henderson, Neb., Mikayla Brant of Clear Lake, Iowa, and Rosa Vallejo Jauregui of El Paso, Texas. You know it’s going to be a great day when chapel turns into decorating cookies, stockings, ornaments, and getting your picture taken with Santa.

Mixing it up Friends, Food, Fellowship Those who might complain that there’s nothing to do in York were most likely not taking advantage of all the weekly activities on the menu. Graham Marks, director of student activities, and SAB chair Kelsey Beck kept the student body entertained and in rich fellowship with a calendar full of activities and events. From the kickoff Block Party to PreFinals Ice Cream, YC students were as engaged and involved as they chose to be. With the help of Student Government, YCM, Inter Club Council, Residence Life, faculty and staff, and various team and group activities, the pulse of campus was strong and upbeat throughout the year.

Lending a Hand Just like the Musketeers’ motto, “All for one, and one for all,” making it through an academic year takes everyone doing their part and helping someone else along the way. The York College campus was a busy place in 2021-22 with lots of moving parts and even more extra-mile efforts given to make sure no one was left behind.

Student Government Association, Residence Life, Student Activities Board, athletic teams and the training staff, performing arts, PBL, social clubs, faculty and staff — all did their best to keep the YC spirit alive and thriving. Thank you to everyone who in their kindness and patience made this year possible and for doing it with a smile.

Emerging Director

One-Acts

Stepping into the role of student directors for the Emerging Director One-Acts were Samara Hannel, a senior from Odessa, Mo., Eli Embray, a junior from St. Joseph, Mo., and Chris Martens, a senior from Alden, Minn.

Hannel’s play, The Darkest Hour, tells the story of a man (Luke Dovel) on death row within four hours of execution. Though innocent, he has been found guilty on circumstantial evidence as appearances have been too strongly against him. His mother (Grace Gaer) comes to visit him, and they spend time together talking about the past and how they got to this point.

“Directing this show was challenging because I had to find a way to show all of the ways someone can be sad,” Hannel commented. “It’s made me a better director for several reasons but I feel as though I have also grown so much as a person throughout the entire experience.”

Blind Date, directed by Embray, is a romantic comedy in which Marcia (Julie Tremaine) reluctantly agrees to go on a blind date with Ted (Tate Straatmann). She realizes how literal the term blind date can be when Ted arrives and drops his walking stick.

“I chose this play because it seemed genuinely fun,” said Embray of the play. “It has been challenging to work so closely with only 2 actors rather than a larger cast. It is easier to be more specific and critical, but I generally have a hard time giving criticism, so I have been forced to work on that. It has been a really good experience!”

Martens chose The 146 Point Flame for the powerful message it presented. The tragedy tells the story of four women (Kinzie Norton, Carys Pitman, Makayla Rowan, Alyssa Shaw) who immigrated to America in the early 1900s in pursuit of the American Dream. They are all employed at the Triangle Shirtwaist factory when a tragic fire breaks out on March 25, 1911. They share stories of their past and the moments they cherish the most as their lives are lost to the flames.

“The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire was a tragedy, but it led to many changes in workplace regulations,” shared Martens of the experience. “This show forced me to stretch my knowledge of theatre and try new things as a director. Spring Theatre

FOOLS The town of Kulyenchikov has been cursed for two hundred years, but you won’t find any diseases or ghosts… just ramped stupidity. Neil Simon’s FOOLS is a comedy set in the small Ukrainian village during the late 19th century. The story follows Leon Tolchinsky (Chris Martens), an ambitious young schoolteacher, as he accepts a position to educate Sophia (Kelsey Beck), the daughter of Dr. Zubritsky and his wife, Lenya. Upon arriving Leon soon finds the citizens of Kulyenchikov doing things that make no sense and discovers that the town has been cursed with chronic stupidity.

Leon’s job is to break the curse, but no one tells him that if he stays over twenty-four hours and fails his mission, he too becomes like one of them. The problem is he falls in love with Sophia, a girl so stupid, she has only recently learned how to sit down. FOOLS was a hilarious show with an amazing cast that enjoyed putting smiles on people’s faces and making them laugh.

For nearly 45 years, York College students have experienced the camaraderie and excitement of Songfest, and this was the first time in three years that the show was able to run its normal course, mask-free.

Director Amy Fraser appropriately chose the theme of Freedom for the show and featured many of York College’s talented students in a variety of ways. Fraser said, “It’s been a lot of fun working with these student performers and crew! I’m always so proud of their dedication and hard work.”

Twelve hosts and hostesses were selected from last semester’s auditions based on their vocal or instrumental talent, and they did not disappoint. Hosting this year were Luke Dovel, Amanda Fischer, Ashlee Jimmerson, Bruce Johnson, Leah Lane, Chris Martens, Allison Myers, Isaac Nabb, Maryn Phillips, Alyssa Shaw, Jordan Strong, and Elizabeth Zaiger. The production featured amazing solos, duets, and big numbers such as “Rise Up” and “Freedom” from the hosts and hostesses. With many of the performers being accomplished musicians, a full concert sound was achieved throughout the show.

The traditional club shows were also a vital part of the production with Delta Chi Alpha & Kyodai kicking things off in the first half of the show with a colorful Everything 80s! Just before intermission Beta Beta Sigma and Koinonia gave their time capsule performance of Dancing Through the Decades. In the second half of Songfest, Omega Phi and Kingsmen presented their musical theatre twist of Villainous, and Theta Psi and Sigma Tau completed the club productions with their entertaining The Boys Are Back.

Instead of competing, social clubs were once again encouraged to create club shows that fit their personality and identity. However, at the end of Saturday’s performance the People’s Choice Award, voted on each night by the audience, was given to Omega Phi and Kingsmen for their creative Villainous production.

Jack in the Blue Ridge Mountains For their 25th year of sharing joy and good laughs on the stage, the Traveling Children’s Theatre performed the daring tales of Jack in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The play took young audience members through four different stories all starring the main character Jack, played by junior Elias Dallmann. The four Appalachian folktales were fast-paced, humorous, and held true to the oral traditions of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Dalton Brandt, Elias Dallmann, Luke Dovel, Grace Gaer, Leah Lane, Chris Martens, Allison Myers, Ella Montoya, Alyssa Shaw, and Julie Tremaine made up the cast with John I. Baker III directing. The group performed around 20 times in the spring semester, visiting elementary schools and other community venues in the surrounding area.

It was an evening of celebration as York College held its annual All-College Banquet April 5 at the Holthus Convention Center in York. The student body gathered with faculty and staff for a night of reflection, recognition, great food catered by Kerry’s Restaurant, and even greater fellowship.

Kyla Gilstrap, Greek Life sponsor, kicked off the awards and recognition portion of the evening by presenting Theta Psi and Sigma Tau with the Men’s and Women’s All-Sports Trophy. The Academic Excellence Award went to Delta Chi Alpha and Kyodai for the highest grade point average among the clubs. The Big Heart Award for the highest participation in blood drives was a tie between Omega Phi and Kingsmen and Theta Psi and Sig Tau. Delta president Brooke Barker was then called back up to the stage for the club Service Award.

The athletic department honored Maria Geesaman and Alexandre Motta as the Student Athletes of the Year, and Dr. Aleshia O’Neal, assistant professor of English, and Roni Miller, head women’s softball coach, were awarded Faculty and Staff Members of the Year respectively. Eric Tremaine was this year’s Reppart Service Award recipient for his incredible work in getting the 12th Street Suites ready for occupancy. Tremaine is in his 27th year at YC. At the conclusion of the award’s ceremony, Mr. and Ms. York College candidates were recognized. YC faculty and staff make the selection for this award from among graduating seniors. Candidates embody a commitment to the mission, purpose and core values of York College. Justus Coppinger, a vocal performance and Biblical studies major from York was announced as Mr. YC, and Mikayla Brant, a biology major from Clear Lake, Iowa, was named Ms. YC.

Justus Coppinger and Chris Martens completed their fine arts’ careers at YC with a couple of stellar performances in the spring.

Martens’ senior project was a challenging play called Any Night, dealing with themes of manipulation, gaslighting, and domestic violence. Martens encouraged the audience to let their mind wander and ask, “Who can I really trust?”

Faculty and staff know what students are up against as the semester comes to a close and volunteer to serve up the food, dish out the ice cream, and give encouraging smiles and well-wishes for the upcoming all-nighters.

Some professors will even conduct a one last ditch study session during the evening or be on hand to answer any final questions that might come up before the scheduled exams.

Comparing notes, working out some of the more difficult problems, getting clarification on themes and principals... all are part of the evening mix. More than anything, however, it’s the opportunity to unwind and enjoy the sweet fellowship of friends and to know you have others in your corner.

YC Class of 2022 Final Commencement

With its transition to university status over the summer, York College held its final commencement ceremony as nearly 90 students crossed the Campbell Center stage to receive their degrees—the seats and bleachers filled with proud parents, excited family members, and friends.

President Sam Smith welcomed everyone to the historic event and addressed graduates stating, “We’re celebrating the beginning of your new season in life. We celebrate that York College’s commitment to providing you with a Christ-centered education has indeed transformed you from a student to a teacher in your field of expertise. As president of York College it is my honor to welcome you to this amazing celebration.”

Cassandra Savage, president of The Savage Group, LLC and a member of the YC Board of Trustees, was the featured speaker at commencement. “This is a momentous day both for you and for York College. It represents both an ending and a beginning,” Savage said. “You’re the last graduating class of York College... Soak it in. Enjoy it. Be proud of yourself. You have achieved something that’s worth celebrating.”

“It’s a time to be proud but not satisfied,” Savage went on to say and then moved into her speech about The Race, the Pace, and the Gift of Grace. In conclusion she said, “I congratulate you on today, but I am so looking forward to seeing what you plan for and accomplish in the future.

Thank you again for honoring me with a place in your commencement. Here’s to York College’s past and York University’s future.”

After Savage’s address, York College Provost Dr. Shane Mountjoy recognized some of the academic achievements of the graduating seniors, calling attention to those who were wearing honor medallions inscribed with the college seal.

President Smith congratulates Karla Chairez-Martinez, who graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in biology.

Asking each group to stand, Mountjoy had the audience applaud for those who graduated Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, and Cum Laude. He also recognized both master and bachelor graduates who were wearing a medallion with a gold ribbon signifying cumulative 4.0 grade point averages for all their time at York College.

Dr. Frank Wheeler, retiring professor of Bible and chair of the department, was then recognized by Mountjoy for his three-plus decades of service to York College and conferred upon with the status of Professor Emeritus.

To his surprise, Dr. Mountjoy, who began his long tenure at York College in 1990, was then honored by President Smith with his own Professor Emeritus status.

The ceremony continued as graduates lined up to walk across the stage to receive their diplomas from President Smith with a smile, a handshake, and frequently, a hug. Graduates were then hooded by their escort with the color of academic regalia that represented their field of study.

The York College Concert Choir, conducted by Dr. Clark Roush, closed out the ceremony by performing Sweet Home and I Got a Home in-a-dat Rock before leading the audience in the singing of the York College Alma Mater.

Chapel

YC Community Every weekday, York College students, faculty, and staff gather for worship, scripture, a program, and announcements at 10 a.m. in the Campbell Student Activity Center. What would mornings be without daily chapel? At no other point in the day is the entire YC family invited to connect in worship but with each other as well.

York Campus Ministries scheduled more students, including many of the graduating seniors, to speak in chapel this year and frequently asked those who were bilingual to lead prayers and read scriptures in their native language. Praise Chapel and Breakout Chapel continued to be popular with students, as were all the Alumni Love events throughout the year. Students were reminded on April 26 that they were participating in an historic moment — the last YC chapel. Using as an illustration a commemorative brick from Hulitt Hall given to him by the trustees, President Smith charged students to build something lasting with their bricks.

Whether servant leadership takes place in the classroom, residence hall, athletic field, government, or just a study session, the skills and hearts of YC’s student leaders were on display for all to see during the 2021-22 academic year.

Arriving on campus early for training and readying the resident halls for occupancy, RAs are the frontline ambassadors for the College. For many incoming students, the RAs are the first people that they get to have a full and meaningful conversation with. They take their roles seriously and know that it is important for them to do their jobs correctly in order to keep residents safe, and best of all, to ensure that students enjoy their time at YC! York College Student Government Association (SGA) busied themselves during the 2021-22 academic year on behalf of the student body. SGA officers, class representatives, Student Activities Board, the Inter-Club Council, and Ignite Excellence together combine to make up this important organization. They were diligent in following their mission in promoting unity, fostering a lively school spirit, efficiently governing, and establishing better community relationships while upholding the Christian principles on which York College was formed.

York Campus Ministries was led by Dr. Sam Garner, vice president for spiritual life and campus minister. They continued their mission to draw students closer to Jesus by offering opportunities to grow in their faith. YCM encourages ministry on a student-to-student basis and work together to impact YC students in the resident halls, chapel, Wednesday devos in the Prayer Chapel, in classrooms, and on the playing field.

The Campus PR Squad act as ambassadors for the college, sharing their York Experience on social media to give future students a sneak peek at life on campus. Under the supervision of the Admissions Office, they also assist on campus tours and serve as a source of encouragement for the campus community.

Concert Choir

The York College Concert Choir, under the direction of Dr. Clark Roush, was limited in their travel due to the lingering pandemic’s effects, visiting a few churches in Nebraska, but were able to give four campus performances during the year including Homecoming, a community concert in November, Spring Panther Days, and their traditional Spring Works concert at the end of April.

Dr. Roush posted this facebook message after the Spring Panther Days’ performance: “Today I had the honor of conducting the incredible York College Concert Choir - and they very possibly redefined incredible. I was deeply moved by the depth at which they represented the choral art, the music department, and York College. Thank you, Choir, for your commitment to the music, each other, and excellence. Today was truly at a different level - and it was glorious to make music with you.”

Still We Rise was the Choir’s first “regular” Spring Works concert since April 2019 and was a reminder of how important it is to have beauty and art in our lives and our world. Kay Magner provided the piano accompaniment and Dr. Tim McNeese was the evening’s orator. Guest instrumentalists were Dr. Elizabeth Grunin – Cello, Michael Keelan – Violin, Evan and Boe Fraser – Percussion. The audience left refreshed and reminded that love, understanding, beauty, connection, kindness, and hope are the way forward.

At the spring commencement ceremony, graduating seniors gave their final performance as the choir sang two of their favorite selections: Sweet Home with soloist Maryn Phillips and I Got a Home in-a dat Rock with soloist Bruce Johnson. Dr. Roush completed his 36th year at York College.

The Bartholomew Performing Arts Center hosted the sights and sounds of the Celebration Singers under the direction of Amy Fraser in their annual Cocoa and Carols production as well as their spring show in March. For the ever-popular Cocoa and Carols, the group performed a variety of solo and ensemble numbers that featured both secular and sacred Christmas music. Emma Seilstad and Desma Hamilton were the student assistant directors for the production, and Ashlee Jimmerson created the choreography. And of course the holiday event was made even more memorable with complimentary hot chocolate and cookies, generously provided by volunteers.

In the spring, Made with a Purpose included all live music, covers of songs, and original work of students. “God has given us the talents and abilities to create art, so that is what we decided to do,” shared Fraser. Justus Coppinger, student assistant director, added, “The purposes we are created for aren’t easy, and because of this, they often require us to do things that challenge us and stretch us past our comfort zones.” The uplifting show featured ukulele, djembe, bass, guitar, piano and various percussion instruments providing entertainment and inspiration for audience members of all ages.

Two-time National Champion Diego Korol, National Runner-up Felipe Venegas, and Moriah Toledo who took 4th in two events made York look good in Chicago.

PBL Leadership was a theme throughout the year in the York College PBL Chapter as was evident in the year’s events, chapter and state leadership roles, and the state and national competitions. Fourteen students qualified for nationals after an impressive showing at the Nebraska PBL Leadership Conference. Four students were recognized as Who’s Who recipients in Nebraska PBL: Kitra Cody (SR/Cody, NE), Allison Myers (JR/Kansas City, MO), Josh Santiago (SR/Norfolk, NE), and Moriah Toledo (SR/Fruitland, NM). 4/21 PBL Spring Awards Night 6/24-27 National Leadership Conference The York College chapter was recognized as the largest Nebraska PBL Chapter at a 4-year college, for the third year in a row. The Chapter was also recognized as a Gold Ranking chapter, based on chapter activities in community service, leadership activities, and career readiness building. Chapter Advisor Stacie Turnbull was honored as the Advisor of the Year.

At the National PBL Leadership Conference in Chicago, Diego Korol, a first-year graduate student from Santiago, Chile, became York’s first two-time national champion, winning Financial Analysis and Decision Making. Felipe Venegas (SR/Santiago, Chile) was national runner-up as he placed second in Sales Presentation.

Delta & Kyodai Delta Chi Alpha and Kyodai made their mark on campus as well as in the community, participating together in their York experience. A large number of their members were involved in Songfest going retro with their “Everything 80s!” production singing Walking on Sunshine, Uptown Girl, Don’t Stop Believin, Rock N Roll, and Footloose. At the yearend banquet, Delta and Kyodia were honored with the Academic Excellence Award, having the highest GPA among the clubs.

Delta was also presented the Club Service Award for all of their volunteer work in the community.

Omega Phi and Kingsmen took the stage by storm during Club Coronation and never looked back. Thirteen of their members were involved in YC theatre productions throughout the year and it paid off in the spring with their Songfest production “Villainous,” winning the People’s Choice Award. With villain costumes to match, their song repertoire was Be Prepared, Mother Knows Best, Poor Unfortunate Souls, Gaston, and Friends on the Other Side. At the All-College banquet they received the Big Heart Award, tieing with Theta Psi and Sig Tau for the highest participation in blood drives.

Paint War during Club Week was a great way to get things going and led to other success. Cross Country Cross Country saved their best times for November and had two runners qualify for the NAIA Cross Country Championships in Vancouver, Washington. Hosea Kiptoo (SR/Rift Valley, Kenya) finished with a careerbest time of 26:26 at the KCAC Championships. His pace in the 8K was almost a minute faster than his previous best and was good enough to give the team 13 points in the conference standings.

The following week, the women’s team had four athletes compete at the NCCAA Cross Country Championships in Joplin, Mo., and each runner turned in a career-best time: Geesaman – 18:43, Lizzy Logan (JR/ Hallsvillle, TX) – 19:57, Hannah DeHart (JR/York, NE) – 20:26, and Ceci Castillo (SO/Plant City, FL) – 21:03. Geesaman broke her own York College record by 10 seconds en route to a 6th place finish, becoming a four-time NCCAA Cross Country/ Track and Field All-American.

For their top 20 finishes at the KCAC Cross Country Championships, Geesaman, Logan, and Kiptoo were named All-KCAC Honorable Mention.

Kiptoo was also named the men’s Champions of Character, and Hali Giesbrecht (SR/McCool Jct, NE) was the women’s recipient. This was Coach Justin Carver’s 11th season heading the cross country program.

Women’s Soccer It was a tough year offensively for the Lady Panthers after graduating two seniors from the 2020-21 squad with the most goals in program history. The team, however, stayed cohesive and competitive throughout the season, giving it their best both on and off the field. Men’s Soccer After a rough 3-8 start for the season and losing four of the first five conference games, the men’s soccer team took care of business the month of October, claiming six wins and a double overtime tie with Tabor. In that seven game stretch, the Panthers out scored their opponents 18-5 and finished the regular season in fifth place in the KCAC with a conference record of 7-4-1. Second year head coach Tyler Wilt took the team into the postseason tournament, finishing with a record of 9-9-1.

Gabriel Cabral (SR/ Campinas, Brazil) and Alexandre Motta (SR/Sao Paulo, Brazil) added 5 goals each. Twelve players were credited with assists on the season led by Tamas Sebestyen (JR/Szekesfehervar, Hungary) with 4.

Cristhofer Monje (SR/Santiago, Chile) started every game as goalie and was credited with 67 saves on the year including 4/1 shutouts. York led the KCAC with 16 men’s soccer athletes earning the Scholar-Athlete distinction.

Alexandre Motta was the team’s Champion of Character recipient.

All-KCAC Third Team Danielle Armendariz led the team in kills with 207. (above)

Volleyball Women’s volleyball finished the year with a 6-24 record with KCAC victories over Bethel College and Avila University. Both conference wins were nail biters, going to the final set of the contest where the Panthers closed out each match with a 15-11 victory.

Danielle Armendariz (SO/El Paso, TX) led the team in kills with 207 and was named All-KCAC Third Team. She and Shiloh Lively (SR/Las Vegas, NV) had the most serving aces with 23 and 22 respectively. Alex Garcia (Rio Hondo, TX) led in digs with 373 followed by Darby Wright (JR/Waco, TX) with 227.

Wright was also the assist leader with 605. Blocking leaders were Brooke Halterman (JR/Panora, IA) and Kenna Tarnowski (FR/ Firestone, CO) each with 63 solo and assist blocks combined.

Brooke Halterman was honored as the team’s Champions of Character recipient for the season.

On the season York was led in scoring by KCAC Honorable Mention Julia Trujillo (SR/Denver, CO) with 485 points followed by Amaia Diez (SR/Pamplona, Spain) with 332. Both players surpassed the 1,000 point milestone in their YC career. Diez finished with 1,119 points and Trujillo with 1,072. Trujillo also led in rebounds with 167 and steals with 47. Yionis Keith (JR/Oklahoma City, OK) was the assist leader with 58 and Catie Whitehead (JR/New Port Richey, FL) had 18 block shots. Natalia Perez (SO, El Paso, TX) was the team’s Champion of Character recipient.

Under fourth-year head coach Cory Minjarez, the Lady Panthers finished the season 5-25, 3-21 in the KCAC.

Men’s Basketball Under fifth-year head coach Tree Burks, the Panthers swept KCAC opponents Sterling, Tabor, and Saint Mary and won at home in the Freeman Center against Friends University and Avila University. York finished the season 11-20, 8-16 in conference play.

Keyaun Hoskin (JR/Duncanville, TX) was once again named All-KCAC Third Team, leading the team in total points at 404. Brent Clark (JR/Dallas, TX) was not far behind with 377 points, and Erik Talton (JR/Dallas, TX) led with 52 threepointers, shooting 36% from behind the arc. Clark led the season in assists with 64 and also in steals with 62. Luka Gelb (SO/ Tucson, AZ) led the team in both offensive and defensive rebounds with 62 and 150 respectively and with 23 blocked shots. Salvador Fernandez (SO/ El Paso, TX) was the team’s Champion of Character recipient.

Women’s Wrestling Three women wrestlers had wins on the national stage March 11-12, led by Allison Doppenberg (SO-123/Lakewood, CA) who went 3-2 in the tournament. Kylie Marlin (SR-101/Kelseyville, CA) and Claire Payne (SR109/Ukiah, CA) each went 1-2 at Nationals. At the KCAC Championships two weeks prior, the team placed fourth overall with Marlin, Payne, and Emily Fergeson (SR-116/Euless, Date Event Results TX) each taking 2nd place in their 11/6 Friends University Invite NTS 11/13 Waldorf University Open NTS respective weight class and being 11/19-20 Missouri Valley Open NTS named All-KCAC 2nd Team. I started this program with the seniors on this team, and they will always have a special place in my heart, whatever they do.”

York College had a great turnout at the KCAC Men’s Wrestling Championships in Ottawa, KS, taking 2nd at the tournament for the second year in a row and qualifying four Panthers for nationals. Under third-year head coach Chad Mattox, all 12 wrestlers that went to the tournament finished in the top five in their weight brackets. Harley Williamson (SR-125/Euless, TX) went 4-0 to win his weight class and become a repeat All-KCAC First Team. John Fox (SR-149/Gilroy, CA) qualified for his 3rd straight NAIA national tournament, going 3-1 and was named All-KCAC Second Team along with Lennorise Echols (JR-174/ Milwaukee, WI) who beat two opponents that previously defeated him. Brayden Smith (SO-157/Kearney, NE), Tommy Wentz (FR157/Fremont, NE), and Keegan Miller-Page (SO-165/Hutchinson, KS) each took 3rd and were named All-KCAC Third Team. Smith won the tournament’s Gorrarian award for most falls in the least amount of time.

At Nationals, Fox went 2-2, Williamson 1-2, Echols and Smith were 0-2. Marce Vasquez (SR-285/Bridgeport, NE), who was twice named KCAC Men’s Wrestler of the Week, was the Champion of Character for the wrestling program along with being named to the Academic All-KCAC Team.

Competitive Cheer Encouraging others and lifting their spirits is a huge part of what makes up YC cheer whether it’s rallying the fans at a home basketball game, premiering a routine to get ready for competition, or serving the community of York. YCCDT, under sixth-year head coach Bailey Davis, chose a couple of the colder months to help over 300 families with the food bank distribution. Despite the temps and wind, they gave sunshine and smiles. The cheer team also gave some of their personal time at York Elementary School, engaging the students and helping the BOOST staff.

Competitive cheer beat Bethany College in head-to-head dual action early in their season and finished in sixth place at the KCAC Cheer Championships. In the final round of the championships, the Panthers improved their performance for a score of 61.63. Bryce Smith (SR/ Elgin, IA) was named All-KCAC 2nd Team, and Emily Milliken (SO/ Harlan, IA) and Caitlyn Trower (SR/Sherman, SD) were named All-KCAC Honorable Mention. Julie Tremaine (SO/York, NE) was the Champion of Character recipient. For how the team displayed exemplary character and sportsmanship on the field, on campus, and in the community, they were honored with the KCAC Team of Character award.

Competitive Dance The dance team’s hard work in the off season paid off as they began their competitive schedule with wins at both the Bethany College Classic and the Kansas Wesleyan Invite. Three weeks later, they were in the spotlight again at the KCAC Dance Championships in Newton, Kans., where they earned the top spot with a near-flawless routine in which they scored 61.567.

The Panthers were more than one point better than second-place Bethel College. The victory vaulted them into competing in the NAIA Southwest Qualifier, and the Panthers were able to host the competition in the Freeman Center—the winner would move on to the NAIA Dance Championships. This marked the first time York College has hosted an NAIA qualifying event in any sport.

The ladies had two great performances and finished fourth out of the nine teams represented.

Riley Brown (JR/Lincoln, NE) was named 2nd Team AllKCAC, and Dominique Edwards (SO/Kansas City, MO) and Aubri Plummer (FR/Vichey, MO) were named All-KCAC Honorable Mention. Fifth-year head coach Bailey Davis was named the KCAC Coach of the Year for the second year in a row. Ella Montoya (SR/ Hampton, NE) was the team’s Champion of Character recipient.

Softball Under eighth-year head coach Roni Miller, softball swept KCAC opponents Southwestern and Bethel College in the season. A special memory near the end of the year was going extra innings with KCAC powerhouse Oklahoma Wesleyan and taking the 7-6 victory at home. Down one run in the ninth with two outs and a runner on base, Sofia Perez (SO/ Madera, CA) smashed a walk-off two-run home run over the right-field fence for the victory.

Kate Reyes (JR/Orange, CA) picked up the complete-game win, striking out eight batters while Haylea Thomas (FR/Bueana Park, CA) led the Panthers from the plate going 4 for 5.

On the season, Breanna Underwood (SO/ Slidell, LA) led the team at the plate with 45 hits, 34 runs, and a .372 batting average. She also had a team high 29 stolen bases. Kennedie Anderson (FR/Tooele, UT) was the RBI leader with 35, including 8 home runs. Reyes led the pitching stats with 124 innings pitched, 10 complete games, and 100 strike outs. Sariah Ayala (FR/Fresno, CA) and Thomas were named All-KCAC 2nd Team while six Panthers were named to the KCAC Honorable Mention Team: Anderson, Perez, Reyes, Underwood, Katherine Arceo (SO/Merced, CA), and Katy Fazendin (JR/Las Vegas, NV). Perez also earned KCAC Gold Glove honors. Hannah Splattstoesser (SO/Scottsbluff, NE) was the team’s Champion of Character.

Women’s Track & Field Women’s track and field tallied nine NCCAA All-American performances at the National Christian College Athletic Association’s Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Championships. At the Indoor Championships, Maria Geesaman (SR/Greeley, CO) finished third in the 800-meters in a time of 2:22.14 to help the Panthers finish fifth out of 18 schools. The 4x400 relay team of Geesaman, Kamrie Dillan (FR/ Imperial, NE), Sadie Carr (SR/Henderson, NE), and Makayla Dinkler (SO/Silver Lake, NE) also finished third to garner All-American honors with a season-best 4:14.58 for the race. Dinkler also placed fourth in the pentathlon with a score of 2,629 points, and Amber Dominguez (SR/Odessa, TX) was fourth in the weight throw with a toss of 47’ 8”.

At the Outdoor Championships, Geesaman defended her title as NCCAA National Champion, running the 3000-meter steeplechase in 11:34.67. The senior shaved more than 20 seconds off last year’s mark and qualified for the NAIA Outdoor Championships. Dinkler repeated as an All-American, taking third in the heptathlon with 4,054 points.

Dominguez was another repeat All-American in the hammer, finishing third with her throw of 149’ 11”, and added All-American status in the discus this year with a bronze medal, throwing 131’ 1”. There were three individual performances that just missed the All-American podium with fourth place finishes: Dillan — heptathlon, Hannah DeHart (JR/ York, NE) — 5000 meter, and Candice Jones (SO/Arlington, TX) — shot put. The 4x400 relay team of Dillan, Geesaman, Dinkler, and Tynika Irvin (SO/Fort Lauderdale, FL) also took fourth. The team finished 6th out of the 21 schools represented.

Women’s Golf The women’s golf team under first-year head coach Zane Pfau began their season winning the dual against Doane University 354394. The Panthers then put together two solid days of golf to finish fourth in a field of 13 teams at the Mount Marty Invite in Yankton, S.D., on September 2-3. Jessica Simants (SR/Azle, TX) had rounds of 79 and 83, good for 7th place out of 71 golfers. Jess Li (SR/ Reading, England) and Riley Stuhr (FR/Bradshaw, NE) finished tied for 15th place with their rounds of 80/90 and 85/85 respectively, and Makayla Rowan (SR/Three Forks, MT) notched 24th place with rounds of 89/88.

Macey Truitt (FR/Derby, KS) competed in her first collegiate contest and tied for 52nd place with 99/99. At the KCAC Fall Match Play, Oct. 4-5, the team lost to #2 seed Bethany College 3-1-1 at the Mariah Hills Golf Course in Dodge City, Kan., and won both matches 3-2-0 against Southwestern College and Friends University with Rowan, Li, and Simants all victorious over their opponents.

Highlighting the spring season was the KCAC Championships in Lawrence, Kan. After shooting 77/86 on the first two days of the tournament, Simants held a four-stroke lead going into the final day of the competition. Firing a repeat 86 on day three, the senior finished tied for 4th in the championship and propelled the Panthers to a fourth place finish overall. Li finished in 20th (95,90,85), Rowan finished tied for 29th (97,94,90), while Stuhr was right behind her with a 31st place finish (95,97,90). Macey Truitt finished 40th. Li was named All-KCAC 2nd Team and was the team’s Champion of Character recipient.

It was a regrouping year for men’s golf under first-year head coach Zane Pfau. With four of last year’s seven varsity players either graduating or not returning and two freshmen recruits with minimal playing experience, getting four competitive individual rounds proved difficult during the season. Veteran players Charles Bowman (SR/Leander, TX), Trevor Spence (JR/McAlester, OK), and Teague Stewart (JR/ Scribner, NE) made the most of the scheduled tournaments but knew their team score would lack the usual competitive flare. Without any home matches this year, the team quietly did their part in representing York College athletics in Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and South Dakota.

Esports First-year head coach Collin Tucker guided the York College Esports program in its inaugural yearlong season, beginning with its first competitive bout with San Diego State University on September 7 and its final match with Columbia College on April 27. Besides teams like the aforementioned and the Name Game League of Legends University of Hawaii at Manoa, Esports Adams Armstrong Overwatch & Rocket League became the newest conference varsity Bond Overwatch & Rocket League Smash program with a total of five KCAC Brownlee Carvalho Rocket League schools going head to head in virtual Dovel League of Legends Overwatch competition. Headquartered in the Fernandez Motta Rocket League Rocket League Campbell Center, the Esports team New Sanhueza Rocket League kept later hours than most athletes Smith Smash Smash honing their skills.
