Welcome to York College Move-in Day!

A

ugust 22, 2020 was one of the most anticipated move-in dates in the history of York College. The entire YC family was anxious to get some sense of normalcy after five months of social distancing and online meetings and it showed in the eyes... and in the smiles when the occasion allowed the mask to be removed.

Freshmen didn’t seem to mind the move-in protocols and quickly adapted to the demands. New beginnings, new friends, new schedules, a new home. Welcome to York College!

It was a busy orientation schedule the first few days, including academic advising, campus tours, and get-to-knowyou sessions with Student Association, club reps, and YC Campus Ministries.

There were plenty of student volunteers to help make a good first impression and kick start the year.

Community Welcome

D

owntown York provided a carnival like atmosphere to students as they visited businesses and storefronts during Panther Prowl. Free stuff, food, coupons, and even job opportunities were all part of the orientation activity to familiarize students with the community.

At the York Chamber of Commerce office, refreshments and chamber swag were available along with a “Bingo-style” card. The challenge was for YC students to fill a card with stickers collected from each business or organization they visited. The York College students who successfully filled their card were entered into a drawing for a Chamber Check to use at one of York’s local businesses.

A way to give back to the community each year is the College’s participation in the annual Yorkfest parade. This year’s event was subdued with Covid restrictions and dropped from the usual 200+ walking the parade route to only a handful of YC students, but with extra attention given to the float entry, York College was well represented.

Family Time Block Party

T

he icing on the cake for the Genesis orientation schedule was the annual Back to School Block Party on Kiplinger Avenue Tuesday evening. Planned by Jolene Herzog, director of student activities, the weather cooperated magnificently and students packed the street for the various activities, games, and treats: cotton candy, Goody Pop popcorn, and Kona Ice! It was a time for returning students to meet the incoming class as well as visit with the YC faculty and staff that dropped by.

For many students, this was the first time they were able to see each other since the abrupt cancellation of in-person classes back in March. The new guy on the block, President Smith, busied himself with introductions and hearing students’ stories on what brought them to York College. With or without masks, smiles and laughter were on the menu and nothing was going to take away from the start of a great year.

First Day

Let the Education Begin

A

ugust 26, 2020 — it’s been 173 days since the last in-person class at York College. For the majority of the YC student body, coming back to campus was about the most anticipated homecoming they could remember. The block party was a great way to see old friends and discover new ones, but now it’s time to get to work. The beautiful sound of an alarm clock goes off to kick-start the morning and anticipation gives way to reality: school’s in session.

Opening chapel seemed a bit odd sitting in the local football stadium across from Hulitt Hall, but everybody was there. York College’s 21st president, Dr. Sam Smith opened the new semester by encouraging students, faculty, and staff to have the boldness like that found in an athletic apparel company’s slogan and the story found in Matthew 14.

“Just Do It. Give it everything you’ve got.”

Mr. Smith Comes to YC York College’s 21st President

r. Sam Smith accepted the role of president of York College and took office July 6, 2020. He moved from Nashville, Tenn., with Lisa, his wife of 19 years, and their three children, Brooklyn (16), Bear (12), and Boden (9).

His twenty years of service at Lipscomb University in a variety of roles that included all aspects of student services and concluded with the role of Dean of Student Life, prepared him for the presidency. As a YC alumnus, he looks back at the formative time when he was here as a student and desires for Christ to always be at the center of what he is doing.

The Complete History of Theatre (abridged)

he York College Theatre Department presented The Complete History of Theatre (abridged) to virtual audiences on October 16-17, on what would have been Homecoming weekend. The comedy, written

by Matt Thompson, explores the beginnings of Greek theatre, Aristotle’s Poetics, the fine art of Kabuki, the history of mime, the gladiators of Rome, and speculation on the real author of Shakespeare’s plays.

Along the way, the bumbling Shakespeare misquotes himself, Sarah Bernhardt can’t get over the sound of thunderous applause and Stanislavsky gets blown out of a cannon! Through a little perseverance and commedia dell’arte, the famous trifecta attempts to hold the show together, but with the producer’s appearance on stage, things only get worse when the cast finds out they are trapped in a play within a play.

“We are lucky to be able to do theatre during a pandemic,” mentioned John I. Baker III. “We poke fun at the art that we are doing, and have a lot of fun doing so.”

Near the play’s end, the cast realizes that the playwright hasn’t written an ending, wherein the iconic celebrities are forced to seek the audience’s help in finding a creative conclusion to the show. Just when it appears that all the drama is behind them, the reviews come in, and what the critics say surprises them.

The interactive farce kept audiences in stitches at every turn.

Fall Theatre 15

The fall play was performed to a live audience of fifteen and live-streamed the weekend that would have been Homecoming.

The Lady Panthers rallied back in the second half to defeat the College of St. Mary Flames 77-72 and start their season 2-0.

The cheer team was ready for their season debut in the Freeman Center as they fired up the crowd in the Homecoming basketball victory.

Royalty Unmasked Homecoming 2020

H

omecoming weekend may not have taken place but that didn’t stop us from honoring those among the student body who represent the YC family in royal fashion. The 2020 Homecoming Court was honored at halftime of the women’s basketball home opener on October 29 with Pierce Mederios and Elizabeth Ryan crowned King and Queen.

Mederios, a biology (pre-professional) major from Mountain Home, Idaho, is a member of the PR Squad, Kyodai social club, and the men’s wrestling team. Ryan, also from Mountain Home, Idaho, is a chemistry major with a minor in biology and math. She is a four year starter on the women’s soccer team, and involved in student government (treasurer), STEM Club, and Delta Chi Alpha social club.

Senior candidates for queen were Taylor O’Brien, Logan Dye, and Amber Jimenez. King candidates were Diego Korol, Hayden Brown and Eric Lenear. Junior Attendants – Sebastian Barreto and Mikayla Brant, Sophomore Attendants – Bruce Johnson and Grace Gaer, Freshman Attendants – Anthony Aragon and McKenna Schroeder.

Mixing it up A town the size of York may not have a plethora of choices when it comes to entertainment and fun, but that just opens the door of creativity and opportunity for those tasked with engaging the college community. Jolene Herzog, director of student activities, and committee chair Logan Dye kept the student body entertained and in rich fellowship with a calendar full of activities and events. Block Party, AutumnFest, Super Bowl Party, Laser Tag, and Neon Dodgeball were just a few of among the many gatherings. With the help of Student Government, YCM, Inter Club Council, Residence Life, and various team and group activities, the pulse of campus was strong and upbeat throughout the year.

Getting through an academic year is tough enough without a nasty virus pushing its way into routines and schedules. Testing. Counseling.

Remote tutoring. Shopping. Ministering. Lots of moving parts and lots of extra mile efforts to make sure no one is left behind. Students, faculty, staff, and administrators all did their best to keep the YC spirit alive and thriving. Admissions preparing care packages for students in isolation, SGA delivering personal pizzas and goodie bags, the Residence Life team tirelessly working to provide meals to those in quarantine, SAB finding ways to include everyone in their activity plans, teachers giving their evenings to be a part of the Spark Sessions, athletic trainers putting themselves at risk to do their job, service projects taking place on campus as well as in the community — Gratefully, the list goes on and on. Thank you to everyone who in their kindness and patience made this year possible and for doing it with a smile.

Emerging Director

One-Acts

The Emerging Director One-Acts were in the capable hands of 2020 YC communication graduate Olivia Nabb from Lincoln, Neb., and senior communication, business track major Christopher Martens from Albin, Minn. Both directors oversaw every part of the production process including choosing the script, selecting the cast members and constructing the set.

After losing her entire family in a fatal tornado, Pam, a college sophomore, must embark on an unimaginable journey as she copes with her loss. To separate herself from her grief, she transfers schools and isolates herself from her fellow students, but these steps do not lessen her sadness and guilt over their deaths. Not until a fellow classmate makes an attempt at conciliation does Pam finally begin to realize that healing doesn’t have to be a solitary endeavor.

“At the Bottom of Lake Missoula explores our humanity in real situations and with the same breath shows the unsung bravery that lies in all of us to stand when it feels impossible,” said Nabb.

In the play Digging Up the Boys, the mine where Floyd, Paul, and Jack work is old, nearly picked clean and about to be closed, when part of it collapses, trapping them. The women left above race to the foreman, only to receive the company line: Go home and pray.

We’ll handle it. Though the men are seen as “no-counts” in a classconscious South, to Addie, May, and Ruth they are beloved fathers, husbands, and brothers. Those above and below are left to whistle in the dark, desperate for a miracle -- but the mine holds a terrible secret that will change their lives forever.

Martens commented in his director’s notes that the audience would “be moved by the real emotions and actions of the characters as they try to find the meaning behind their circumstances.”

Radium Girls Radium Girls is D.W. Gregory’s gripping drama inspired by the true story of female laborers who were poisoned and killed by their factory’s radium-based paint.

Though Radium Girls ranges from 1918 through the 1940s, the bulk of the narrative is centered on events in New Jersey in the mid-1920s.

The play follows the efforts of dial painter Grace Fryer, played by Kyla Gilstrap, as she fights for her day in court. Her chief adversary is her former employer, Arthur Roeder, played by Chris Martens, an idealistic man who cannot bring himself to believe that the same element that shrinks tumors could have anything to do with the terrifying rash of illnesses among his employees. As the case goes on, however, Grace finds herself battling not just with the U.S. Radium Corporation, but with her own family and friends, who fear that her campaign for justice will backfire.

After a year hiatus, Songfest was back on the YC campus in hybrid form. I’m Still Standing was the theme of the production as well as the show’s finale in which performers returned to the stage to collectively raise their arm in victory over a long season of social distancing. The high-energy musical performed in the Bartholomew Performing Arts Center was a salute to everything that was missed in 2020.

“I am so pleased we were able to perform, as last year was quite a letdown when we had to cancel the show,” reflected Amy Fraser, director of Songfest. “We had some hurdles to overcome, but as a team we worked through them and created something we can be proud of.”

Working through the challenges of how best to keep the audience safe and still meet the demands of those wanting to see the show was one of the greatest takeaways from the weekend—the first-ever Songfest production to be livestreamed.

“I believe our audience will continue to grow, and that we can reach even more people with this platform,” said Fraser.

Elias Coppinger, Justus Coppinger, April Fernandez, Amanda Fischer, Ashlee Jimmerson, Thaddaeus Kinney, Leah Lane, Graham Marks, Ian Meek, Maryn Phillips, and Caitlyn Trower were this year’s hosts and hostesses, performing various group numbers and solos. Club shows were abbreviated this year due to virus protocols and available practices, but each social club took the opportunity to celebrate on stage in their own unique way. Beta Beta Sigma and Koinonia began the club numbers with their theme of This is Me. Delta Chi Alpha and Kyodai added their rock ‘n roll twist with an impressive Six Feet Away. Theta Psi and Sigma Tau began the second half of the show with The End of the Game, and Omega Phi and Kingsmen completed the club productions with their cheerful, entertaining Mr. Blue Sky. In an effort to promote unity and remove the pressure of competition, there were no judges to score the clubs. Each group created a show that fit their personality and club identity with the overall emphasis on creating memories and building relationships together.

One of the creative concessions made this year was to have the Celebration Singers, five of which were hosts and hostesses, put their energies and talents to work in Songfest rather than a separate spring production. “It was a great challenge to combine the two shows, but it paid off and I am proud of what we accomplished,” said senior Em Hyberger, assistant director of Songfest.

10-Minute Fairy Tales The York College Traveling Children’s Theatre didn’t let COVID restrictions dampen their spirits as they went all-in with their spring production of 10-Minute Fairy Tales. Like almost everything else about life during the pandemic, the traveling troupe had to adjust, streaming their performances online. With a few live performances scattered into the mix, the cast put together a quality show that left young and old alike entertained.

The fairy tales featured “The Sister”, “The Elves and the Shoemaker” “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”, “Hansel and Gretel”, “Jack and the Beanstalk” and “The Frog Prince.” Each story contained scripts written by local writers C. Danielle Deal and Mitchell Roush as well as director John I. Baker III. The cast joined the fun with their own improvisations as the season progressed.

Baker began the Traveling Children’s Theatre program at York College in 1997.

The group typically performs 20 times in a spring semester, visiting elementary schools and other community venues in the surrounding area.

It was an evening of celebration as York College held its annual All-College Banquet April 6 at the Holthus Convention Center in York. The student body gathered with faculty and staff for a night of reflection, recognition, great food catered by Kerry’s Restaurant, and even greater fellowship.

Amy Fraser, director of Songfest, kicked off the evening honors by presenting Omega Phi and Kingsmen with a special Songfest award for their creative and entertaining “Mr. Blue Sky” club show. The athletic department honored Breanna Bembenek and Pierce Mederios as the Student Athletes of the Year, and Lindsey Eckert, assistant professor of psychology, and Chad Mattox, head men’s wrestling coach, were awarded Faculty and Staff Members of the Year respectively. Meghan Shruck, dean of students, was this year’s Reppart Service Award recipient for her incredible work and heart of service caring for students throughout the pandemic.

At the conclusion of the award’s ceremony, Mr. and Ms. York College candidates were recognized. YC faculty and staff make the selection for this award from among graduating seniors. Candidates embody a commitment to the mission, purpose and core values of York College. Finishing Strong 2021 Commencement

It was two years of celebration rolled into one for many of the YC students, faculty, and staff. Not being able to host last spring’s commencement, the 2021 graduating class was sprinkled with several of the 2020 seniors who accepted the College’s invitation to return and take their time on stage. Held in the Campbell Student Activity Center, the seats and bleachers were filled with proud parents, excited family members, and eager graduates ready to receive their degrees.

Dr. Allison D. Garrett, president of Emporia State University, was the featured speaker at commencement. She asked graduates to consider five things that would make a difference in their lifelong pursuits. Continue to develop good communication skills, be timely and dependable, do hard things, be kind, and focus on what’s important. She concluded with, “You are about to become very, very busy with your lives so focus on what’s important—on your faith, on your friends, and on your family.”

After Garrett’s address, YC Provost Dr. Shane Mountjoy recognized some of the academic achievements of the graduating seniors, calling attention to those who were wearing honor medallions inscribed with the college seal.

A special faculty honor this year was given to Mrs. Gail Miller, associate professor of biology. “For 36 years Gail Miller has made many contributions to this institution in and out of the classroom and in a lot of different roles,” said Mountjoy. He talked about Miller’s noteworthy teaching, her love for students, and the significant service she has given to the institutional mission. “In recognition of the extensive contributions and sacrifices she has made over the last three and a half decades, York College is conferring the status of Professor Emeritus on our friend and colleague Gail Miller.”

Miller joins YC faculty emeriti Dr. Robert W. Lawrence and her husband Dr. L. Ray Miller II in this honor.

The ceremony continued as graduates lined up to walk across the stage to receive their diplomas from President Sam Smith with a smile, a handshake, and frequently, a hug. Those receiving bachelor’s degrees were then hooded by their escort with the color of academic regalia that represented their field of study.

The York College Concert Choir, conducted by Dr. Clark Roush, closed out the ceremony by performing Go Ye Now in Peace and The Lord Bless You and Keep You before leading the audience in the singing of the York College Alma Mater.

Discovering Community Chapel Similar to most events on campus, daily chapel underwent changes to facilitate meeting in large numbers throughout the year. Students either attended on Monday/ Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday, depending on their assignment. The same program was offered to both groups to give a similar experience in chapel, and speakers signed up for back-to-back mornings. Dr. Sam Garner, vice president for spiritual development, introduced an optional Friday chapel to highlight student messages since the normal practice of Breakout Chapels were discontinued.

Dr. Garner sent this email out to the campus community as the year was getting underway, “Even though our chapel routines will be different, our aim is still to honor our daily rhythm where the campus stops at 10:00 a.m. each morning to pray together, hear from Scripture together, and hear from various members of the York College community.”

Student Leadership Willing to Serve

Whether servant leadership takes place in the classroom, residence hall, athletic field, government, or just a study session, the skills and hearts of YC’s student leaders were on display for all to see during a very awkward year full of unknowns.

For many incoming students, the RAs are the first people that they get to have a full and meaningful conversation with. Arriving on campus early to move students in and help them feel welcome at YC, the Residence Life team tries to be prepared for any scenario that may come their way.

They take their roles seriously and know that it is important for them to do their jobs correctly in order to keep residents safe, and best of all, to ensure that students enjoy their time at YC! York College Student Government officers and representatives were diligent in following their mission during the 2020-21 academic year—promoting unity among the campus organizations; fostering and maintaining a lively school spirit with a deep sense of loyalty to the college; efficiently governing matters of student concern; and establishing better community relationships while upholding the Christian principles on which York College was formed. Student Activities Board, the InterClub Council and Student Senate together combine to make up this important organization.

York Campus Ministries, led by Dr. Sam Garner, vice president for spiritual development, continued their mission to draw students closer to Jesus by offering opportunities to grow in their faith. YCM encourages ministry on a student-to-student basis and work together to impact YC students in the dorms, in chapel, Wednesday devos, in classrooms, and on the playing field. York Campus Ministry is organized to encourage ministry on a student-to-student basis.

The Campus PR Squad act as social media ambassadors for the college, sharing their York Experience on Twitter and Instagram to give future students a sneak peek at life on campus. They also assist on campus tours and serve as a source of encouragement and positivity for the campus community, often using their platform to lift up individual students, faculty, and staff at YC.

Dr. Roush is the beneficiary of SG’s student volunteers raking leaves for YC faculty and staff.

The newly trained peeps of the PR Squad are ready to take on the spring semester.

Levitt is a popular place to be for the Student Government’s Spark session.

They gave a performance this evening as close to perfection as humans can get. It was amazing. I wouldn’t change a thing I heard, and that’s a rarity for a conductor after a concert. I am so proud of all they’ve overcome and accomplished. My Choir family sustained me through my first Spring Works without Sue in the audience. I know she was beaming at their work, how much they love each other, and what good care they take of me. They are amazing young adults and it is an incredible blessing to be their conductor.

Thanks for a fabulous semester. You gave yourself, the audience, your conductor, and the art a gift tonight.

Concert Choir

The Concert Choir abandoned normalcy in rehearsals as well as its performance schedule and made the most of the year under director, Dr. Clark Roush. The pandemic compromise included thirty minute masked practice sessions on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays on the Bartholomew Performing Arts Center stage with section rehearsals on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Although they were not able to travel for their annual Winter Tour or give off-campus performances, the concert on November 17 and their Spring Works program at the end of the year were exceptional.

The fall concert could only be attended by a limited in-person audience; however, because of live-stream capabilities, friends and family around the country were able to enjoy the performance. The well-chosen repertoire included O Praise the Name, Jacob’s Ladder, A New Commandment, Calling My Children Home, and My God is a Rock.

Their Spring Works Concert, John Rutter’s “The Reluctant Dragon,” did not have restrictions on those who attended outside of wearing masks. The delightful musical setting of a late 19th century British children’s story by Kenneth Grahame was perfect for the occasion and featured Kay Magner as the accompanist and soloists Chris Martens (Narrator), Maryn Phillips (Boy), Emma Seilstad (Dragon), Justus Coppinger (St. George), and Thaddaeus Kinney (Villager).

At the spring commencement ceremony, the choir sang Go Ye Now in Peace and The Lord Bless You and Keep You as graduating seniors gave their final performance. Dr. Roush completed his 35th year at York College.

Celebration Singers Celebration Singers under the direction of Amy Fraser, assistant professor of music, went with “Plan B” and made the most of a pandemic-ridden year. With in-person classes in the fall semester wrapping up before Thanksgiving break, their annual Cocoa and Carols’ holiday production had to be scrapped. Since the spring show was also in question, Fraser decided to combine the group’s talents and energies with those of the Songfest hosts and hostesses, making lemonade out of what life was giving her.

Em Hyberger was one of several student-performers who doubled up in their Songfest contributions, serving as the assistant director of Songfest and as a Celebration Singer. “I’m so thankful and relieved that we were able to make this memory a reality,” Hyberger said.

“Since it was stolen away from us last year, it was especially important to see this production through. It was a great challenge to combine the two shows, but it paid off and I am proud of what we accomplished.”

“As someone who has been involved in both Songfest and Celebration Singers for the past few years, I think it’s really cool that we get to combine the shows,” shared Justus Coppinger, Songfest host and member of the Singers. “Instead of working toward two different goals and two different shows, we all get to put on one cohesive show that will best represent York College.”

Fraser reflected positively on having a variety of performances in Songfest and showcasing YC’s many gifted students. “Every year will be a representation of the talent on our campus, and the show will continue to evolve with our student body. That’s a priority for me.”

PBL After an impressive seventeen 1st place awards at the Nebraska state competition in the spring, the York College Professional Business Leaders set their sights high for the National Leadership Conference, hosted virtually June 24-27, and did their PBL chapter proud. Sixteen Top 10 finishes were awarded that included one individual national champion, one team champion, two team runners-up, and seven additional students at fifth or better in their events.

Santiago and Diego Korol (SR/Santiago, Chile), another 2019 national champion, teamed up for a second place finish in Forensic Analysis.

During the state competition, Santiago, who served this year as Nebraska PBL Vice President of Communications, was named the Nebraska PBL Member of the Year and received $500 cash.

Santiago will be serving as president of Nebraska PBL in 2021-22 along with Toledo as VP of Communications and Cody as VP of Membership, a position Korol served in 2020-21.

Both Santiago and Korol were honored with Who’s Who for Nebraska PBL awards while Dye was named YC’s Who’s Who. In addition to competitive events, the York College PBL chapter was honored with the Gold Excellence Award and received the traveling trophy for highest points in a chapter. Based on membership, York College PBL is the largest PBL chapter in Nebraska.

Delta & Kyodai Delta Chi Alpha and Kyodai made good use of their time together during the year, despite the pandemic restrictions. With a large number of their members involved in fine arts and athletics, the Songfest stage was an easy transition as they entertained with their “Six Feet Away” production. Teague Stewart was right at home with his air guitar lead in Rock’n Roll All Night and the lyric changes they made to I Wish I Had a Delta Girl (Jessie’s Girl) and Six Feet Away (One Call Away) were perfect for t h e s h o w. T h e clubs grouped together for their finale, ending with “I want to see you out that door Baby bye bye bye.”

Omega Phi & Kingsmen Omega Phi and Kingsmen made great efforts to do things together when they could and were blessed as the year went along. In the spring, their Songfest production Mr. Blue Sky was a crowd favorite with the Electric Light Orchestra sound track and original stage moves. Even though there were no judges at this year’s show, Director Amy Fraser honored them at the AllCollege banquet with a special recognition award for their creative and entertaining production. Theta Psi & Sigma Tau Theta Psi and Sigma Tau met the challenges of the year head-on and came away with great memories. Even though they were small in number with their Songfest production, The End of the Game by Weezer, it showed that they took pride in their creation and put on an entertaining show.

Theta Psi president Makayla Rowan talked about how personal and meaningful the year’s production was to her. “Songfest is about bringing us together to create something beautiful and unique. This year’s show was a true representation of how York College can transform our lives through relationships and creativity.”

Volleyball Women’s volleyball had the longest season in York College history thanks to the pandemic causing postponements and cancellations and the safeguards that were introduced for tournament competition. What normally would be a three-month season ending in November extended into the spring semester with the final match played just after spring break on March 20. Head coach Crystal Nething, with the help of team chaplain Christi Lones, kept the team focused on matters of importance.

Even though their normal service in the community was mitigated, they still found ways to serve and stay upbeat and encouraging.

The team finished the year with a 2-24 record with conference wins over Avila University and Bethel College. For season-high kills, Shiloh Lively (JR/Las Vegas, NV) led for the second year in a row with 233 followed

by Haley Scoffield (SR/ Casper, WY) with 128.

Naomi Warren (SR/Ft. Worth, TX) and Jasmine Scarbrough (SO/ Arlington, TX) led in digs with 333 and 307 respectively. Finehika Uhatafe (JR/Bedford, TX) was the assist leader with 469. Scoffield led in solo and assist blocks on the year with a total of 45.

Women’s Soccer For the first time in YC history, women’s soccer had both a fall and spring season. Thanks to the pandemic, seven games were played through the end of October and the remaining six were scattered from February—April. First year head coach Matt Coppinger took the ladies into the conference tournament and finished the season with a record of 6-6-1, 5-5-1 in KCAC play.

For the fourth year in a row the Panthers’ offense was led in scoring by Breanna Bembenek (SR/ Manhattan, IL) with 7 goals on the season and a total of 34 in her college career, a York College record. Cala Jamison (SR/Owasso, OK) also had multiple scores with 3 goals on the year. Jazmin Pineda (JR/San Diego, CA) and Logan Dye (SR/Wylie, TX) led the team in assists with 6 and 4 respectively.

Goalkeeper Alexa Moreno (JR/Duarte, CA) was credited with 61 saves and 3 shutouts on the season. Bembenek and Dye were both named All-KCAC 2nd Team. Moreno, Chailey Bollens (JR/Trabuco Canyon, CA), and Amber Jimenez (SR/Gilbert, AZ), who finished her YC career with a total of 18 goals and 8 assists, were name KCAC Honorable Mention. Bembenek earned First-Team CoSIDA Academic All-District honors for her efforts over the past four seasons at York College.

Men’s Soccer Even though the pandemic extended the men’s soccer season far into the spring semester, the amount of non-conference matches were all but eliminated and the schedule went from twenty games in 2019 to eleven in 2020-21. The Panthers were one of the most diversified teams in the KCAC with 12 states and 7 countries represented on the roster—Brazil and Chile led the way with the most players at 11 and 7 respectively. York got a 3-1 win over Friends University and a 1-0 victory against Doane University, finishing the season 2-7-2.

Cross Country The Panthers opened up the cross country season at the KWU Coyote Invite where the women’s team finished fourth overall and the men were led by Joseph Ruffcorn (SR/Basehor, KS) and Anthony Hodson (FR/Fresno, CA) with a 20th and 35th place finish respectively.

For the ladies, Maria Geesaman (JR/Greeley, CO) started off her 2020 season with an impressive sixth place finish followed by Hannah DeHart (SO/York, NE) in 15th place, Lizzy Logan (SO/Hallsvillle, TX) 22nd, Cecilia Castillo (FR/Plant City, FL) 27th, and Shelby Dudar (SR/ Okotoks, Alberta) in 38th.

Geesaman ran the best race of her career by over 15 seconds as she finished fourth overall at the Mid-Sstates Classic on October 24.

The men were once again led by Hodson and Ruffcorn and placed 8th as a team.

Geesaman had to wait another five months before Nationals were hosted

by Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on April 9. She ran a 19:43.18 race and finished 164 out of 326 runners. The teams’ Champions of Character were Connie Nickell and Joseph Ruffcorn.

Men’s Basketball The 2020-21 basketball season was truncated by the pandemic to about half of the normal amount of scheduled games. Instead of playing KCAC opponents at both a home and away venue, the majority of teams were only able to play each other once. Under fourthyear head coach Tree Burks, the Panthers got key wins against Southwestern College, Bethany College, Ottawa University, and Friends University. York finished the regular season 4-13, 4-10 in conference play.

Keyaun Hoskin (SO/ Duncanville, TX) was named All-KCAC Third Team, leading the team in several categories including: total points at 229, 29 three-pointers, 58 assists, and 22 steals. Webster Simeus (SR/ Miami, FL) led the team in total rebounds with 95 and with 18 blocked shots. Eric Lenear (SR/Bellevue, NE) was second in points and assists on the season with 184 and 31 respectively and was the team’s Champion of Character recipient.

For the third consecutive year, women’s wrestling took third at the conference tournament and were also awarded the KCAC Champions of Character Team of the Year. “We try to do the right things on and off the mat,” said head coach Jeff Albers. “We talk about holding people accountable and doing the right things even when others are not... If we get better as people every day, when our team members graduate, they will go into the real world with a great attitude and ready to do the best in whatever they do.”

Four athletes had wins at the NAIA Championships in Jamestown, ND, on March 12-13. Bella Mitchell (FR/Colorado Springs, CO), who won each of her matches by technical fall, led the Panthers with a 3-2 tournament record. Cameryn Hulbert (FR/La Palma, CA) and Claire Payne (JR/Ukiah, CA) were both 2-2, and Kami Fiordalis (FR/ Parker, CO) was 1-2 at Nationals.

Men’s Wrestling The men’s wrestling program had a great season as they won 8 out of 11 duals and finished as a team with KCAC Runner-Up honors.

Softball A highlight of the 2021 softball season was earning a split with the second-place KCAC team Friends University in one of the final home matches. York held strong in game one but fell 3-0. The Panthers’ offense came to life in game two and beat the Falcons 8-5 thanks to a Gabby Loya (SR/Arvada, CO) grand slam in the first inning and a Briana Walter (SR/Ralston, NE) home run in the sixth. The team had six wins in a two-week stretch over KCAC opponents Bethany College, Kansas Wesleyan University, Sterling College, Bethel College (2), and Friends University.

Under seventh-year head coach Roni Miller, York finished 8-27 on the season, 6-18 in the conference.

Briana Walter (SR/Ralston, NE) led the team in several offensive categories including a .385 batting average, 6 home runs, 28 RBIs, and .688 slugging percentage. KCAC Gold Glove recipient Breanna Underwood (FR/Slidell, LA) led the Panthers with 43 hits and also had the most stolen bases at 14. Kate Reyes (SO/Orange, CA) pitched the most innings with 131, had five wins to her credit, was the ERA leader at 4.92, and had the most strikeouts at 76.

Walter and Reyes were both named All-KCAC 2nd Team, KCAC Honorable Mention went to Underwood, Gabby Loya (SR/Arvada, CO), and Sofia Perez (FR/Madera, CA), and the team’s Champion of Character recipient was Bekah Powell (FR/Edmond, OK).

Women’s Track & Field At the conclusion of a very successful indoor and outdoor season, women’s track and field competed at the NCCAA Outdoor Championships in Greenville, Ill., May 12-14. The ladies represented YC in stellar fashion with six All-American performances, including four individual golds. Maria Geesaman (JR/Greeley, CO) crushed the field in the 3000-meter steeplechase winning the event by more than 20 seconds with a time of 11:55.31. Blessing Osueke (SR/Houston, TX) took gold in the long jump with a leap of 18’ .25” and placed third in the triple jump (37’ .25”). In the throwing events, Bri Eckerberg (SR/Gering, NE) took gold in the shot put with a heave of 41’ 5”, while teammate Amber Dominguez Indoor Track and Field Schedule 12/4-5 2020 Concordia Early Bird Seward, NE (JR/Odessa, TX) 1/22-24 Friends Univ. NAIA Mid-Season Invite Wichita, KS took top honors in the 1/29-30 Fred Beile Classic - Doane University Crete, NE 2/6 Bethel Thresher Invitational Wichita, KS hammer throw with a 2/18-20 2021 KCAC Indoor Championships Wichita, KS 3/3-6 NAIA Indoor National Championships Yankton, SD mark of 146’ 9”. In the Outdoor Track and Field Schedule heptathlon, Makayla 3/27 Jinx Invite - Southwestern College Winfield, KS 4/2 Bronco Invite - Hastings College Hastings, NE Dinkler completed the 4/9-10 Concordia Invite Seward, NE All-American honors 4/17-18 Jim Dutcher Invite - Doane University Crete, NE 4/22-24 Drake Relays Des Moines, IA by winning bronze 5/6-7 KCAC Outdoor Championships Ottawa, KS with 3551 points.

5/13-14 NCCAA National Championships Greenville, IL 5/26-28 NAIA Outdoor National Championships Gulf Shores, AL In the 4x800 meter relay, Geesaman, Lizzy Logan, Hannah Dehart, and Cecilia Castillo finished 4th with a time of 10:07.93. Sadie Carr finished 4th in the Pole Vault with a mark of 9’ 6.25” and also placed 4th in the heptathlon with 3305 points. Dinkler added to her hardware placing 5th in the long jump with a mark of 17’ 0”, and 6th in the javelin with a mark of 103’ 8”. Dominguez also had multiple top-8 finishes placing 5th in the discus with a mark of 122’ 7” and 8th in the shot put with a throw of 38’ 7.75”. Alyssa Shaw placed 7th in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.28.

In all, the team had 15 top-eight finishes and placed 4th out of the 18 colleges represented.

Four athletes competed at the NAIA Championships on May 26-28 in Gulf Shores, Ala. Brianna Florvilus (JR/Dunnellon, FL) finished 16th in the 400-meter dash (57.52), Osueke placed 16th in the triple jump (38’ 6.75”), Geesaman was 18th in the steeplechase (11:41.46), and Eckerberg finished 20th in the shot (41’ 5.25”).

Eckerberg and Connie Nickell (SR/Portland, OR) were the KCAC Champion of Character recipients, and head coach Justin Carver was selected as the KCAC Women’s Indoor Track & Field Coach of the Year.

Men’s Track & Field Men’s track and field completed their season at the NCCAA Outdoor Championships in Greenville, Ill., May 12-14, with five All-American performances, including two individual golds. Jordan Norton (FR/Canyon, TX) won gold with a time of 21.79 in the 200 meters as well as took silver in the 100 meters (10.91), both collegiate bests. Alphonse Jackson (FR/Fort Smith, AR) became a national champion in the shot with his throw of 50’ 11” and placed 6th in the hammer throw (139’ 1”). Jarod Belden (SO/Ontario, CA) was an NCCAA All-American in two events, winning silver in the decathlon with 5,880 points and bronze in the 110-meter hurdles (15.86).

The women’s golf team under head coach Tim Lewis saved their best for last as they turned in their lowest team total of the year at the KCAC Spring Championships April 23-24. Their first round score of 332 at Buffalo Dunes Golf Course in Garden City, Kan., was only 8 strokes behind KWU thanks to a couple of collegiate bests from Jessica Simants (SR/Azle, TX) and Jess Li (JR/Reading, England) who fired 76 and 79 respectively on the par 72 course. The wind picked up on day two of the tournament, and Bethany College was able to make a late charge and capture second place by a single stroke. For the tournament, Simants’ two-day total of 160 was good for Runner-up honors and Li’s 163 was a tie for seventh. Both players were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Combining the April scores with the two rounds in March at Battle Creek Golf Club in Broken Arrow, Okla., Li’s four-round total of 338 was good for seventh place overall in the conference, and she was named All-KCAC Second Team. Simants finished with a 344 for 15th place. Other scores of note on the year were collegiate bests from Bailee Bastin (SR/Choctaw, OK) with an 80 at the Concordia Invite, Makayla Rowan (JR/Three Forks, MT) with an 84 at the Ottawa Invite, and Jessica Salazar (SR/Arvada, CO) with an 87 also at the Ottawa Invite. Li was the team’s Champion of Character recipient.

Men’s Golf The men’s golf team launched its 2020-21 season with a 33-stroke win on the road against the CCC raiders at the always difficult Elks Country Club in Columbus, Neb. York was led by Teague Stewart (SO/Scribner, NE) who captured medalist honors with a 78 and Mads Andersen (FR/Viborg, Denmark) who fired an 80 for runnerup. The Panthers had a couple of other dual wins during the spring at Norfolk Country Club and York Country Club. Under head coach Tim Lewis, the team had its lowest overall score at Woodland Hills GC in Eagle, Neb., in the first round of the Doane University Spring Invite, shooting 319.

York defeated Tabor College 3-2 in the KCAC Fall Match Play Tournament with Stewart, Andersen, and Trevor Spence (SO/ McAlester, OK) getting wins. The team finished sixth in the KCAC Spring Championships held at the Buffalo Dunes Golf Course in Garden City, Kan. Inclement weather cut short the tournament at 27 holes with Stewart and Spence grabbing the top spots for YC, tied for 20th and 25th respectively. Low rounds at invitationals during the year were Andersen 73, Stewart 76, Spence 77, Graham Marks (SR/Pflugerville, TX) 77, Ben Long (FR/New Hope, MN) 78, Charles Bowman (SR/Leander, TX) 81, and William Bowman (SR/Leander, TX) 81. Graham Marks was the team’s Champion of Character recipient.

Competitive Dance After having a very successful season, the competitive dance team was poised to make their mark in the conference championships.

Hosted in Lindsborg, Kan., the ladies came within a few points of dethroning Avila University and placed runner-up out of 6 teams, the highest placing conference finish in the program’s history.

When asked about thoughts from this season and moving forward, head coach Bailey Davis commented, “This season we accomplished many things including winning our first ever tournament-style competition, claiming the crown at one of our home duals, and getting an all-time high score at the Bethel Invite. This year was a statement year for our program. We climbed national rankings and placed as high as 8th this season. The steps we took were so monumental in helping our program to gain recognition and respect on a conference and national level.”

Aubrey Myers was named First Team All-KCAC and awarded the Dance Champion of Character. The Panthers had 4 dancers named KCAC Scholar-Athletes: Aubrey Myers, Riley Brown, Maci Witte, and Ella Montoya. Coach Davis was named KCAC Competitive Dance Coach of the Year.

Competitive Cheer In its inaugural year of competition, the York College cheer program finished strong at the KCAC Championships with an overall score of 68.45. Seated in fifth place after the preliminary round, the Panthers headed into finals with a goal of overtaking a couple of teams. According to fourth-year head coach Bailey Davis the team was able to pull out a program-high score in their performance, jumping them over Friends University and McPherson College to finish third. “Our goal was to make the conference top three, and we accomplished that. We had minimal tumbling deduction errors and a few building falls, but our jumps, pyramids, basket tosses, and performance impression are what pushed us over the edge to our solid finish. I am so proud of this team and our growth and cannot wait to see what the 2021-22 season brings us.”

Bryce Smith was named 2nd Team All-KCAC, Caitlyn Trower was named All-KCAC Honorable Mention, and Mikayla Brant was named Champion of Character. Ten cheerleaders were named KCAC ScholarAthletes: Mikayla Brant, Alexandria Diosdado, Luke Dovel, Amanda Fischer, Ashlee Jimmerson, Thaddaeus Kinney, Victoria Miller, Carys Pitman, Bryce Smith, and Aubrey Winkler. President Sam Smith, who took office on July 6, 2020, began with a simple dream — to reflect what God wants for York College. Early in his presidency he made the statement, “I can talk about dreams of having new buildings or a certain number of students, but at the end of the day if Jesus isn’t at the center of it, it doesn’t mean anything.”

Even though COVID-19 pushed back Smith’s inauguration ceremony for a year, he hit the ground running, getting to know the YC family both on and off campus. Big news items in his first year as president were enrollment records in both the fall and spring semesters, ten trustees added to the board, the Mahoney House purchased for future campus residential needs, partnering with Creighton University to offer a nursing program, and the college community getting through the pandemic.

Other items of note during the year were the ongoing renovations and improvements to Hulitt Hall and the ARC at Levitt, vice president for advancement Brent Magner’s retirement and the naming of Jared Stark as his successor, finishing the College’s financial position at yearend in the black, and the many accomplishments of faculty, staff, and the student body despite a heightened time of anxiety and unrest in the world.
