ERICA KNAPP Operations Assistant Although Erica Knapp has worked customer service for years, her love for event planning was a relatively recent discovery. The 2019 Yokota Con introduced her to the world of event planning when she volunteered to construct the Stranger Things room and help find talent for the event. While hashing out ideas for Yokota Con 2020 with Kelly Caravich, the agent for actors and Yokota Con guest stars Dan Payne and Olivia Hack, Kelly suggested Erica consider event planning as a career. Erica took her advice and applied for the Operations Assistant position at the Officers’ Club.

She’s been working there since January 2020. Her role involves a plethora of job responsibilities to include hosting in Chico’s Chop House, supporting the bar staff and creating and hosting events.

Erica is a problem solver and creator whose tenacity to improve the Club makes her a vital employee. She can often be seen walking around the Officers’ Club jotting down event ideas and solutions in her notebook. When COVID-19 hit, Erica took on the challenge without a glitch finding ways for the Officers’ Club to entertain and support the Yokota community while still following COVID-19 guidelines. When Open Mic Night and karaoke were postponed due to the microphones’ potential spread of the coronavirus, Erica came up with the solution of buying microphone covers. And when Kids Club was suspended, Erica created Kidstancing Club. In lieu of having the typical, in-person Kids Club gathering, Erica prepares to-go kits stuffed with interactive and themed activities and trinkets for the children to play with at home. It’s clear that no matter what unforeseen setbacks or challenges the O Club may face, the Yokota community can rest assured that Erica will find a creative solution.

The Yokota Mortuary serves not only the Yokota Air Base but also all the Air Force bases in Japan along with providing support for Indo-Pacific Command (IndoPACOM). They’ve assisted in sending fallen service members home to the States from countries all over the globe to include the Philippines, Thailand, Australia, Diego Garcia and even Antarctica. They serve more than just military too; their services are also open to Yokota’s retirees, dependents, general schedule (GS) employees and even contracted and nonappropriated fund (NAF) employees.

The Yokota Mortuary team serves an average of 35 deceased members a year, and Mortuary Director Matthew Metschke emphasized that one case feels like 10 at Yokota due to the mortuary’s small size and unique location. On top of the typical funeral duties — such as ordering the casket and urn name tags, preparing the body and inventorying all personal effects — they keep in contact with the family and funeral home while in a different time zone and plan the deceased person’s flight back to the States all in just a couple of weeks.

They must also abide by local laws and work with Japanese businesses for supplies and additional services. That’s where the mortuary’s Japanese nationals play a pivotal role. Along with providing their expertise within the field of embalming, Yokota Mortuary’s Japanese nationals, Rei Kubota, Ryuji Ohata and Kazuya Tamanaha also provide translation services and work to build relationships with the local Japanese businesses.

The job requires perfectionism as Metschke explained, “If that uniform is wrong or the name is spelt wrong, that can make a whole world of a difference if we did our job well or not.” But he quickly added that they have fortunately never made such a simple but costly mistake. “There’s no room for error, but we’re perfectionists,” Metschke proudly claimed.

At face value, it may seem like a strange job to be proud of, but all of Yokota Mortuary’s employees see their job as a calling. Ohata discovered his calling at his grandmother’s funeral. He was amazed and appreciative of how beautiful his grandmother looked thanks to the embalmer’s work and decided he wanted to serve families the way the embalmer at his grandmother’s funeral had helped his family. Metschke found his calling in a less profound fashion. Metschke was introduced to his future career as a funeral director in a careers class his junior year of high school. When he told his family of his newfound dream job, they shook their heads in disapproval and convinced him to try teaching. He listened in the beginning only to find he hated it and dropped out of college. It was then that he finally decided to follow his passion and join the Army as a mortuary affairs specialist in 2000 — just six months before 9/11 where he was dispatched to the Pentagon for two weeks to help recover casualties.

The mortuary team is aware that their job certainly isn’t glamorous, but they like to think that they’ve been called to do the work so that others don’t have to, and there’s no better team to do it than Yokota’s Mortuary. Metschke summarized it well when he concluded, “Ultimately the end goal is dignity, honor and respect for that service member. We wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Believe it or not, the Boeding family captured their award-winning photo on a whim during one of their daily walks to the East Side baseball fields. Parents Chris and Carrie Boeding shot the photo on an iPhone when they noticed the global hawk aircraft parked on the flight line.

Even their dog’s bandana was merely a coincidence. “My mom makes him bandanas, and so he almost always has a themed bandana on, and it happened to be right around the 4th of July,” Carrie explained. It helped that their Samoyed dog, Belukha, is incredibly photogenic. “He is very pretty and he knows it too.” She swears he stands taller whenever someone compliments his looks. The charismatic pup loves people and other dogs and has the unique talent of catching his tail. He can often be seen running in tight circles with his tail clutched in his mouth.

It was Chris and Carrie’s 7-year-old son, Cavanaugh, who suggested they submit the photo in the contest. He was elated to find out they won.

Located on the southern shores of Kanagawa prefecture, Enoshima Island offers a variety of attractions including the Enoshima Shrine, Seaside Park, Sea Candle observation tower and historically religious caves. It is also the site of many aquatic sports activities, and views of Mount Fuji can be seen on clear days.

The island is divided into two parts: the yacht harbor and forested hill.

Visit the yacht harbor’s Enoshima Aquarium, restaurants and miles of beach. The beach’s sandy shores and welcoming waters invite beach bums to sun bathe and swim.

Keep your eyes peeled for Enoshima Shrine’s three buildings scattered across the island. The sacred shrine is dedicated to the Buddhist goddess, Benten, who brings forth fortune, wealth, music and knowledge. According to legend, Benten created Enoshima and subdued a five headed dragon that had been terrorizing the area.

To reach the forested hill, climb the steps or pay a small fee to use the elevators. Just keep in mind, the elevators are not open to those descending the hill, so all visitors must take the stairs down. Shop and dine at the restaurants and souvenir shops while enjoying the beautiful sights Enoshima has to offer. Reach the hill’s top to explore Samuel Cocking Garden — a botanical garden filled with seasonal plants and flowers. The Enoshima Sea Candle proudly stands as Enoshima’s predominant symbol. Access the lighthouse’s observation deck for expansive views of the surrounding area.

ENHANCED VISION SYSTEMS The General Aviation Joint Steering Committee (GAJSC) believes Enhanced Vision (EV) and Synthetic Vision (SV) technology can significantly improve general aviation utility and reduce the chance of accidents during night and Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC) operations. EV systems use sensors to provide a better view of the outside world. These aircraft-based sensors use near-infrared cameras or millimeter wave radar to provide vision in limited visibility environments. EV systems can identify terrain in weather, and detect wildlife or other obstructions on the runway. EV does however take some getting used to. You’ll have to make the transition to visual reference at some point, and that can be a challenge – especially if you’re not viewing the world through a Heads Up Display (HUD).

Unlike EV, SV does not use sensors to “see” outside. Instead, SV relies on GPS information and a database to create a virtual representation of the outside world that you, as the pilot, would see. Using information from navigation databases, SV creates a picture of the flight environment and overlays that picture with aircraft instrumentation and weather information to create a single image that contains all of the information necessary for safe flight operations. One key advantage is that SV can be installed in many aircraft with minimal expense or effort.

U-DRIVE DAYTRIP SUPER SAVER Did you know your Force Support Vehicle Operations has an Overnight Super Saver plan for U-Drive van rentals? The plan was created to benefit customers who wish to rent a van for long daytrips without having to pay for two full days of rental.

This is how it works…let’s say you are going to the mountains and want to leave early on Saturday morning but can’t be back before the 4:30 p.m. drop-off time. With the Overnight Super Saver plan, you can check out the vehicle at 4:30 p.m.

Friday evening and return it at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday morning for an additional cost of only $35.

That’s a $40 savings over regular rental fees!

It’s easy to set up. Simply ask one of the Vehicle Ops customer service reps about the Overnight Super Saver when you come in to fill out your contract, and they’ll help you set up your rental to best meet your needs. Overnight Super Saver must be requested at the time of reservation and is only available in conjunction with rentals of 24 hours or more.

CLASS SPOTLIGHT YOKOTA DANCE COMPANY JAZZ CLASSES

Put on your jazz shoes and get jazzy with Yokota Dance Company (YDC).

Classes start with a thorough, full-body stretch to get the muscles limber and ready. Students then practice a variety of jazz movements. Although jazz is rooted in African folk dance, this fluid and artistic form of art has since incorporated characteristics from other cultures. The dance movements performed in modern-day jazz exemplify its incorporation of ballet, as students perform pirouettes (spins) and jetés (leaps) with pointed toes.

Unlike ballet however, jazz emotes a less stringent and more carefree style without losing its character and elegance. In YDC’s jazz classes, the electric pop songs played in class epitomize jazz’s acceptance of modernity. Towards the end of class, students combine some of their practiced skills to create a string of dramatic yet fluid movements.

The classes are challenging, expressive and fun, but for lead teacher, Christine Minard, YDC is about more than just dance. She makes a point to really get to know her students and build a relationship with each and every one of them.
