GRIT & GAINS: GRIT & GAINS:

The Hard-Earned Success of Jimmy Logan

In 2006 under the blazing Iraqi sun, Jimmy Logan began working out while deployed.

Just under a year later, he made tremendous progress bulking from 155 to 215 pounds.

“I used to take advice from magazines like Flex. I’d try them out and see what worked for me and what didn’t,” he says, the thunk of weights hitting the mat punctuating his sentence. Those around him took note and began asking to work out alongside him.

After seventeen years, he remains committed to physical fitness. Instead of taking tips,

however, he’s giving them. As the newest personal trainer at the Samurai Fitness Center, he’s excited to help others reach their goals.

For those looking to start their journey, but are hesitant to begin, Jimmy offers this: “You have to start somewhere and build up. Everything is about progression.”

If you’re interested in personal training sessions with Jimmy or another personal trainer contact the Samurai Fitness Center at 225-8889.

CHERRY PICKING & NAGANO MONKEY PARK

The Nagano Jigokudani Monkey Park is the ideal place to catch a glimpse of monkeys in the wild. Canopied by lush green leaves and carpeted by soft vegetation, the park provides ample berries, flowers, and insects for them to eat. Baby monkeys are often born around this time, so you will likely see mothers cradling their young.

After, the tour will stop by Shinshu Fruits Land for cherry picking and all-you-can-eat cherries for 30 minutes.

*Because the monkeys are wild, they may not always be in the park.

HAWAIIAN KEKI HULA CLASS

“Hula, for me, has been a journey,” says instructor Midori Sudo.

It’s true in every sense of the word. From Japan to California to Hawaii, Sudo has danced on stages across the world.

Born in Shibuya and raised in Yokohama, she began teaching in 2017. Since then, she has earned many accolades including first place in the Hula Oni E competition.

“I’ve had the opportunity to meet and connect with so many people, particularly at Yokota Air Base,” says Sudo. With classes at the Natatorium and the Taiyo, both children and adults can benefit from her expertise.

15 HORIZONS MAY 2024 SPORTS & RECREATION

This summer everyone is invited to discover new books at the Yokota Library!

The Summer Reading Program, a staple in the library’s programming since 2010, encourages base residents of all ages to search their shelves for something to read. This year’s theme is: read, renew, repeat. It focuses on the idea of conservation.

After setting a goal, participants will log the minutes they read through the Beanstack app or website. “Minutes can be counted as long as the participant is doing reading. This includes books, audiobooks, magazines, online articles, studying,

etc. If you are reading, those minutes count!” says Assistant Director of the Library, Ori. As readers progress, they will earn digital badges through Beanstack.

There are prizes aplenty to be had as well. In addition to earning regular reading prizes as participants log minutes, they will also earn digital raffle tickets that can then be used on Beanstack for a chance to win other prizes. Weekly raffles will also be held for those who have logged at least 60 minutes of reading during that week.

The Summer Reading Program is more than just a fun activity. It helps build literacy skills, encourages life-long learning, and prevents the

“summer slide.” Studies have shown that children can lose up to two months of reading and math skills by the time they return to school. Because of this, teachers spend an average of up to six weeks reteaching old material. Reading two to three hours a week helps prevent learning loss.

“It’s particularly important for military families because they can face more educational challenges. This is especially important during summer when many families are moving” says Ori.

Pre-registration starts in early June. The program will begin in mid-June and runs through July.
