MS. SHANNON HAWKINS FSK Ms. Shannon Hawkins is the perfect embodiment of service before self. Currently working as an Office Automation Clerk for the Marketing department, Shannon’s community involvement at Yokota reaches far beyond the doors of building 1295. “Prior to my current role at Yokota, I was heavily involved in community advocacy. I partnered with organizations like Habitat For Humanity and COOLJC, Inc. to further their missions in my local community and abroad. My diverse background in education, marketing and insurance claims allowed me to bring valuable experience to the table.”

Her early days at Yokota began with the Child & Youth Programs, and about a year and a half ago, she made the move to Marketing. “When I transferred from Child & Youth Programs to FSS Marketing, I saw it as a great

opportunity to learn how the department operates. It’s been an insightful experience and I’ve gained a lot of knowledge and skills along the way.” Her role in FSK is pivotal in maintaining daily operations at the facility. “My daily tasks include managing work orders, assisting with developing marketing plans, communicating with customers, and working with graphic designers. It’s a dynamic and fastpaced environment, but I enjoy every minute of it.”

Outside of the office, Shannon spends every moment she can getting to know our host country. “My love for travel is one of the reasons I pursued employment overseas. One of my goals is to visit every continent and as many countries as physically and financially possible. I believe that traveling broadens our horizons and allows us to learn more about the world and ourselves.” Her constant desire to learn about the world around her has positively shaped FSK. Ms. Shannon Hawkins is an essential part of the FSS team as a whole and we’re excited to have her on board!

Yokota Air Base is honored to host the 2023 Friendship Festival. After a brief hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the festival made its glorious return in May of 2022. With over 100,000 in attendance last year, we look forward to seeing even more smiling faces this year! The Friendship Festival offers the opportunity for the United States and Japan to strengthen their bilateral alliance and dive deeper into the surrounding cultures. Each year, private organizations and off base vendors bring their food and souvenirs to share with the community. The vendor booths sit on the sidelines of nearly 34,000 square feet of runway and the stage is home to a continuous schedule of live entertainment. An aircraft display gathers along the end of the flight line, where guests can get a closer look at the planes.

One of the many remarkable facets of this festival is its ability to bring the base together as a whole. Not only does it bolster our relationship with our host nation, but it’s a chance for each squadron to work as a team to enrich the base community. The 374th Force Support Squadron plays a crucial role in the execution of the Friendship Festival. The FSS oversees the lineup of

private organizations, event entertainment and even hosts some of their own booths. Tomodachi Lanes, Vehicle Operations, the Clubs and more set up shop for the day. The flight line will be full of friendly faces, new friends and countless activities for you to enjoy!

The dining options at the festival are diverse and delicious. Whether you’re looking for fair-style food like hot dogs, funnel cakes and turkey legs, or Japanese dishes like yakisoba and yakitori, there are options for everyone.

Once you’ve sampled some tasty treats, visit one of the souvenir vendors to find exclusive Friendship Festival 2023 memorabilia.

The Friendship Festival finale is marked with a stunning firework display.

The flight line is illuminated in the stunning light of over 1,800 fireworks, ending the event with a bang. Between 52 private organizations, 36 off base vendors, 35 performances and more, Friendship Festival 2023 will be one for the books. We can’t wait to see our Yokota family at the biggest event of the year!

HAKONE OPEN AIR MUSEUM AND LAKE ASHI BOAT CRUISE WITH HAKONE SHRINE SAT • 3 JUN

Hakone Open Air Museum opened in 1969 and is

the first of its kind here in Japan. The museum features collections of work by Picasso, Henry Moore, Constantin Brancusi, Barbara Hepworth and many others. The five indoor exhibits highlight 300 of Picasso’s pieces alone.

There are also 120 sculptures on permanent display across the park, including climbable sculptures for kids. Loaded with interesting amenitites, Hakone Open Air Museum is home to naturally fed hot spring footbaths for guests and delicious eats at Bella Foresta. Enjoy the natural scenery and a delightful boat ride across Lake Ashi as you travel to Hakone Shrine, located at the foot of Mt. Hakone.

Founded in 757, this shrine is known for its large red torii gate that stands in the lake.
