Military children gain a unique, flexible and mature worldview at an early age, as evidenced by Yokota’s own youth, eighteen-year-old Liam Willingham, who has demonstrated extraordinary ingenuity and leadership.

In the course of Willingham’s three years at Yokota, he has proved to be a trailblazer in the community. As valedictorian of Yokota High School’s last graduating class, he focused his extracurricular efforts on teen outreach – reviving Keystone Club, Air Force Teen Council and the Youth Sponsorship Program.

During his tenure as Keystone Club president, Willingham served as a mentor to his peers. He assisted them with achieving academic success and promoted service initiatives such as off-base English tutoring, and helped organize fundraisers for the Youth Center. Since graduation, he has continued his work for teens.

Willingham’s widespread influence on FSS’ community has not only been recognized by his peers and teachers, but also by the likes of 374th Airlift Wing Commander, Colonel Kenneth E. Moss.

“The promise and potential of this young man is astounding.

Young men of his character and promise should all have his drive.

He is a confident leader and excellent student – I have no doubt that he has a bright future,” Moss expressed.

Willingham’s passion for building community and creating opportunities for others is reflected in his career goals. continue to hone his people skills and help others. “I’m on a mission to reach as many lives as possible. I want to make a difference and ultimately have a positive impact on the world,” said Willingham.

Due to personal obstacles, Willingham was unable to attend college this year; however, he hasn’t allowed any set-backs to stop him from pursuing his purpose. In the wake of adversity, he chose a path of perseverance – ensuring that every minute this year is spent meaningfully.

In preparation for his ambitious aspirations, he is currently utilizing the gap year to volunteer, work, travel and perfect college applications. The year off has proved busier than ever as he vies for a coveted spot at the Ivy League’s University of Pennsylvania or University of California, Berkeley, as well as a summer senatorial internship. Additionally, he works as a lifeguard at the Natatorium and interns at the Tax Center.

From Internal Revenue Service training to youth mental health awareness, Willingham displays enthusiasm for all his endeavors. The underlying go-getter attitude can be traced to his military background.

“Moving around often throughout my childhood instilled me with adaptability and gave me a wider worldview. As a military child, you get the experience of moving into new environments and meeting people from all walks of life. Because of this, I became more aware of those around me and sought to create initiatives

which fostered community and opportunity,” he explained.

Akin to the experiences of most military children, Willingham has made life-long connections all over the world. These have proved not only strengthening, but also helpful in his postgraduation adventures. In a sustained effort to grow and broaden his horizons, he has traveled by himself for much of his gap year.

“You end up having friends from an international sense. I still have friends from California, Japan, and Korea. I have had the opportunity to go on major trips, traveling by myself through various places, but on the way meeting with these friends again,” Willingham said.

He recounted a month-long trip around Japan and Korea to various installations, the height of which was staying with a mockhost family in the latter. Later he flew to the states to see family and visit Vandenberg Air Force Base, California – his military-child version of a hometown. N IKKO S P R I N G F E S T I V A L TOUR DATE: F r i • 18 M ay Cultural Connection

Nikko Toshogu Shrine, which is registered as a World Heritage Site, is dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu (1542-1616) who founded the Tokugawa Shogunate in Edo (now Tokyo). The highlight of this festival is the procession of a thousand warriors called “Hyakumono-Zoroi Sennin Gyoretsu” of some 1,000 men dressed as samurai warriors. This procession is the reenactment of his grave being transferred from distant Shizuoka Prefecture to Nikko in accordance with Ieyasu’s will.

The procession departs from Toshogu Shrine and leads to a temporary resting place about 3,280 feet away, called Otabisho. It is led by three portable shrines which carry the spirits of the three Shoguns – Tokugawa Ieyasu, Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Minamoto Yoritomo. They are followed by Shinto priests on horseback and samurai warriors clad in full armor. These samurai warriors march slowly, showing off their shiny weapons and armor.

You will also see people wearing masks of red goblins and other spirits, who are said to live in the Nikko Mountains, and they also join the procession to pay respect to Ieyasu. There are small children wearing bright Shinto costumes as it is thought that Shinto gods manifest themselves through children’s bodies. The marching band plays traditional Japanese musical instruments, which sets the mood of the procession. When the procession reaches the Otabisho, offerings are made and Shinto priests perform traditional Shinto dances called Yaotome No Mai and Azuma Asobi No Mai, which mimics an angel’s dance. After the dance performances, the grand procession returns back to Toshogu Shrine taking the spirits back to the shrine.
