Dear Students and Parents: Welcome to Yeshivah of Flatbush Joel Braverman High School For over 90 years, the Yeshivah of Flatbush has educated leaders of the Jewish community and the world. Our students are encouraged to deepen their relationships with Hashem, Torah, and Medinat Yisrael. At the same time, they are encouraged to excel professionally, engage in the best that the world has to offer and contribute to the well-being of others.

This mission is central to the fabric of Jewish existence. Abraham, the pioneer of monotheism, was deeply concerned about the fate of all people.

He therefore prayed even for the people of Sodom. He also contracted a covenant with the Almighty on behalf of the future people of Israel. From the very outset, our faith and tradition have been molded by this simultaneous commitment to universalism and particularism, to the world as a whole and to Am Yisrael, to humane concern for all and inextricable bonds to Torat Yisrael.

Our energy and commitment to excellence have placed the Yeshivah at the forefront of Jewish education and have allowed our students to achieve and succeed far beyond their expectations. Scholarship, curiosity, and ingenuity drive our lessons forward and create an atmosphere of contemplative study and intensive focus. Judaic Studies

Talmud Our Talmud program helps students hone their textual, analytical and critical thinking skills on a daily basis.

Our students study independently, learn in chavrutot, and interpret the Gemarah with confidence and depth, fully prepared for the finest yeshivot in Israel.

Our aim is to help students appreciate the beauty and value of this most important link in the chain of Jewish text and tradition.

Halakhah Halakhah is education for Jewish living.

Each year we familiarize students with key themes, concepts, terms, and personalities in Halakhah and demonstrate the practical aspects of Judaism including the laws of prayer, Shabbat observance, kashrut, marriage, and tzedakah. We inspire our students to understand the nuances involved in living a full Jewish life and use that to guide them in their everyday actions and lifelong decisions.

Tanakh The mission of the Tanakh department is to create an environment in which our students can experience the unparalleled truth, beauty and complexity of the Torah while developing the reading and analytical skills they will need to understand the Torah independently. Our curriculum concentrates on sections of the Hamisha Humshei Torah during the first semester and portions of Nevi’im and Ketuvim during the second semester. Throughout all our lessons, we connect the Torah’s teachings to core aspects of Jewish thought and philosophy. Ultimately, we want our students to see the Torah as the lens through which all aspects of life can be navigated and understood.

Jewish History Our goal is for our students to familiarize themselves with the major events, personalities, and trends in ancient and modern Jewish history as well as Sephardic Jewish History. We want our students to appreciate the relevance of Jewish history to their lives and the Jewish world today as well as to appreciate their rich and complex Jewish heritage.

General Studies

English Our lessons focus on literacy, grammar and style, and encourage students to be active readers who ask probing questions during discussions of a plethora of literary genres. With smaller and more intensive writing classes, our curriculum gives students the skills and tools to be able to write coherently in college and professionally.

Social Studies Social Studies classes help students understand their roots, see connections to the past, comprehend its context, and think reflectively.

Courses include History, Geography, Economics, Government and Civics, but draw on other disciplines to enlarge our students’ scope and range of understanding.

Ultimately, we hope to inspire students in their roles as responsible citizens and as active contributors to a society that is increasingly diverse and globally interdependent.

Math The Math department provides students with a strong foundation of knowledge necessary to succeed in today’s world. Students are required to take three years of high school math including Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II and Trigonometry. Students are encouraged to take a fourth year of math as an elective and can choose from Pre-Calculus, Calculus, AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, and AP Statistics. As intelligent and thoughtful problem solvers, armed with the appropriate knowledge, our students are prepared for success in college and beyond.

Science Students are guided on a journey through scientific inquiry, scientific practice and scientific literacy. That journey begins with the study of two of the core science disciplines: Biology and Chemistry. With that foundation, students can select electives from our wide course offerings which include several Advanced Placement classes. Students perform lab investigations and decode data analyses. This multi-faceted approach promotes creative thinking and unleashes each student’s ability to problem-solve.

Arts and Humanities

Art The Art curriculum prepares students for a possible career in art and design.

Freshman are introduced to the language of art and visual communication.

Sophomores investigate theories of visual perception and the ways images influence and shape culture and identity. Sophomores use Adobe Creative Suite to design original artwork. Junior and Senior AP courses allow students to master their skills before college.

Music Students take Music Appreciation during their senior year. This course provides an overview of musical history starting from early civilization all the way up to current trends in classical, popular and jazz music. Students are introduced to both the lives and works of various composers. They are encouraged to discuss musical masterpieces and study rhythm and melody.

Graphic Design In this dynamic and creative course, all Sophomores learn how to use the Adobe Creative Suite to design and produce original artwork.

Foreign Language The Foreign Language Department embraces the Common Core approach and instills students with a passion for languages as well as the communities and cultures that they represent. We combine the expertise of native language teachers with a multimedia classroom experience. Our students gain proficiency in the target language, whether it be Spanish, French, Portuguese, Arabic, Russian or Latin, and are able to use the language in their future careers.

21st Century Learning YOF empowers students with the knowledge and skills to contribute and compete successfully in the 21st century global economy. Our robust offerings, centering around Engineering, Robotics, Graphic Design and Coding courses introduce a curriculum rich in laboratory, programming, practice, and multimedia activities. The overall goal of the program is to prepare students for STEM-related careers and research opportunities.

Coding And Engineering Our cutting-edge Coding and Engineering program starts in Freshman year and offers students the opportunity to explore the world of computers, engineering and design. Our program is formulated to maximize engagement with hands-on experiences and exciting challenges.

Learners are invited into a dynamic classroom environment to maximize energy and creativity.

AP Photography And AP 2D Design In this course, students gain expertise in using the Adobe Creative Suite software to explore principals of design. Over the course of the semester, students create brand identity, logos and web pages.

Robotics Students explore the field of robotic design, and manipulate the mechanical concepts of gears/torque/speed/power during hands-on labs. Working in teams, students design vehicles capable of movement through tele-operated interaction.

Students learn to program the onboard micro-processor using computer programming language and navigate the robot’s movements.

TSEI U’LEMAD Tsei U’lemad is a Talmudic term which means “go out and learn.” This innovative program offers students the opportunity to pursue their personal passions and interests through a variety of independent study courses. Guiding our Students

Guidance Department The Guidance Department is comprised of an unparalleled group of social workers and psychologists. Guidance staff help students, parents and faculty navigate the social, emotional and academic challenges of the high school years. Freshmen are matched with individual guidance counselors who follow them through their Senior year. The Guidance team provides a confidential and supportive relationship where students can freely share their feelings about academic challenges, social pressures, and family concerns.

Grade Advisory Each grade has an individual advisor who helps students navigate the daily experience of high school. Along with grade principals, the advisor tracks a student’s interests, academic performance, behavior and attendance and acts as a liaison between teachers, parents, the administration, and the student.

Safe Classes & Programs In addition to the support provided by individual guidance counselors, all students participate in a weekly SAFE/ Health Education class. These classes help our students build strong life skills discussing issues of body image, bullying, substance abuse, gambling, and relationships. The Guidance Department also collaborates with Project SAFE to bring in speakers to address pertinent topics with students.

Pathfinders Our Pathfinders Program is a four-year, individualized, mentoring and career program that offers academic, professional and extracurricular experiences to every high school student. Created and directed by Ms. Shifra Hanon, this innovative program, a fitting complement to college guidance, is an exciting way for students to strengthen their college portfolios, build resumes and network with industry professionals. With guest speakers, trips, internship opportunities, career and summer fairs and a wide range of contacts and connections, Pathfinders offers each student the opportunity to discover and pursue his or her own unique path.

Trips Some of our career-oriented trips include visits to the Frank Lloyd Wright exhibit at MoMA, the DNA and the Forensics Labs at American Museum of Natural History, JETS Business Day (sports management), Hidrock Realty, architecture exhibits at the Guggenheim Museum and fashion exhibits at MoMA. 26

College Guidance The College Guidance process is a student-centered partnership. Throughout their high school experience, our students have the attention and support of all members of the college guidance department as they develop individual academic plans with their collegiate goals in mind. College guidance counselors support students in all aspects of the college process, including college search, selection, application and submittal. By providing individualized attention to students and their families, we strive to connect each student with the college that best fits his or her needs.

Our Campus

School Expansion The expansion of the Al and Sonny Gindi Campus has transformed the student experience at the Yeshivah. The new building has substantially impacted the religious, academic, social and extracurricular aspects of our school, providing cutting-edge technology, and a modern and uplifting architectural design with plenty of natural light.

Stein Student Commons The Student Commons has become the social hub of the Yeshivah. The corridor is always filled with activity providing all members of the school with a comfortable place to read, study and relax. With indoor and outdoor seating and a fully stocked cafe available throughout the day, the Commons has brought a new energy and warmth to our school community.

New Classrooms The expansion of our school has also provided us with six new state-of-the-art classrooms. Each room was designed to provide our teachers with the space they need to experiment with new modalities of learning.

Library and Breakout Rooms Modeled after university-style libraries, our expansive new space has become the primary home for independent learning and study. Filled with an impressive collection of books, periodicals and digital media, the library provides students with a bright and comfortable place to read, study and explore.

The library also contains a phalanx of flex-space conference rooms that allow for group study, small classes, extracurricular meetings and student-teacher consultations.

The library has become the center for learning and world-class research at the Yeshivah.

Religious Growth

Spiritual Connection Four years of classroom learning and extracurricular experiences challenge students to grow through a deep understanding of Torah, strong connections with Halakhah and meaningful relationships with mentors. Unique experiences such as Seminar, Rosh Chodesh Rikkudim, and Judaic Seminar Electives cultivate spirituality and inspire devotion to Torah and Mitzvot.

BenHaim Bet Midrash The new BenHaim Bet Midrash has quickly become the spiritual center of the yeshivah. Each morning and afternoon, student prayers are uplifted by the beauty of the space. Throughout the day, the room is filled with intensive chavruta learning and dynamic classes. This space is also the home for our adult Torah education classes and for our after-school Torah study program.

After School Learning/Mishmar Every Tuesday and Thursday night, boys and girls from all grade levels join together to enjoy after school learning opportunities using the weekly parashah or an upcoming holiday as a springboard for further discussion. The participants use this time to explore Jewish themes in a deep and meaningful way as well as an open forum to ask questions. The goal of these programs is for students to see and appreciate the Torah in a new light and understand its relevancy in today’s world.

Tefillah Tefillah is an integral aspect of the Yeshivah of Flatbush experience.

Our minyanim, both Ashkenazic and Sephardic, are structured to create the proper atmosphere for the service of Hashem. Led by rabbis, mentors, and role models, our minyanim are environments in which students are active participants in the prayers.

Students learn both how to pray and what we mean when we pray.

Spiritual Growth

Seminar Each grade experiences its own seminar led by Rabbi Naftali Besser, Dean of Students. These seminars are created to imbue students with a greater love of Judaism and connection to Am Yisrael while enabling them to develop leadership skills, critical thinking, and strengthen their bond to one another and to the school community. Over the weekend, students experience a ruach-filled communal Shabbat and participate in formal and informal learning sessions designed to stimulate discussions about a wide range of topics. These seminars provide some of the most memorable and meaningful moments of our students’ educational experience.

Yachad/Ohel Programs The Yachad/Ohel Programs provide our students with the opportunity to perform tremendous acts of chesed throughout the year. The purpose of these programs is to bring people with developmental challenges together with our high school students in social situations, such as shabbatonim, monthly learning programs and other functions.

These programs teach students the significance of interacting with students with disabilities and how fulfilling these experiences can be for all involved.

Chesed Activities Promoting acts of chesed and community service are core facets of the Yeshivah of Flatbush curriculum. Our students learn compassion through action. We stress sensitivity and responsibility towards the world, which leads to confident, self-fulfilled individuals. All students are required to complete 30 hours of community service per year. This requirement introduces students to the value of volunteerism and inspires many students to become leaders in chesed / community service and worthy causes. The majority of students exceed the honors benchmark, making significant contributions to a vast array of local, regional, national and global causes and projects.

Chesed Mission Each winter break, Rabbi Naftali Besser, Dean of Students, takes a group of students, parents, faculty and community members to Israel to do chesed for 10 days straight. Those who go on this incredible trip visit victims of terror, hospitals, rehab facilities, soup kitchens, and institutions that help children and adults dealing with physical and emotional challenges. The trip has a monumental impact on all of its participants.

Israel

Love of Israel Teaching our students to love, support and defend the state of Israel is central to our mission. From our Israel Activism Commission’s efforts, to our participation in the Celebrate Israel Parade and our Israel Institute Newsletter, our students feel deeply connected to their homeland.

Programs On Yom Ha’atzmaut, Yom Hazikaron and Yom Hashoah the entire school gathers together to celebrate, reflect, and mourn the sacrifices and accomplishments of the Jewish people and the land of Israel. Students engage in writing, creating and performance pieces for each of these programs.

Annual AIPAC Lobbying Trip Every year students visit AIPAC offices in Washington, D.C. and receive training from actual AIPAC lobbyists. The trip culminates with a visit to Capitol Hill where students get the chance to utilize their lobbying skills as they meet with Congressional representatives from their district.

Parade Every year our school participates in the Celebrate Israel Parade. Students can help build or paint our presentation artwork, march with flags, or learn a dance to be performed at the parade.

Students get to proudly show off their school, have fun and show public support for Israel.

Israel Activism Symposium Each year we invite experts in the field of Israel advocacy to address students. In the past, organizations such as AIPAC, Students Supporting Israel and Stand With Us have sent representatives to give informative and engaging sessions on how to advocate for Israel.

Israel in World Relations Course Every senior is enrolled in a class that will help prepare them to discuss the hot topics relating to Israel on college campuses. Students are given the necessary skills and resources to intelligently examine these issues with their peers as they embark on life beyond the high school setting.

The Arts

Artistic Expression The Yeshivah of Flatbush believes that creativity and self-expression are central to every student’s development. Our Arts program offers every type of student the opportunity to shine.

Evening of the Arts Our annual spingtime “Evening of the Arts” showcases the extraordinary talents of students, faculty and alumni in visual, graphic and performing arts. Our multi-faceted arts program offers musical numbers performed by the orchestra and choir. Solo acts range from pop to standards to classical music. Actors perform scenes from Broadway plays as well as interpretations of original student works.

Our students display paintings, drawings, sculptures, graphic designs and photographs.

Students work with our dedicated faculty to fully develop their evolving skills.

Traveling Troupe The Victoria and Jack Aini Traveling Troupe brings the joy of music, dance and drama performance to the elderly on a monthly basis.

These outings give students the opportunity to do chesed and a floor to showcase their talents.

Drama Troupe Each year, the troupe performs a musical, drama and short play for the whole student body. Whether it’s working on lines or working on set construction and costume design, every student gets involved in the dramatic process.

Choir and Chamber Choir Some of the most famous institutions here at YOF are the world-renowned choir and chamber choir groups. Performing both during and outside of school hours, our choir demontrates what can happen when our students come together in unison and harmony.

Orchestra The orchestra gives students the opportunity to demonstrate and perfect their instrumental musical talents. The orchestra performs at many school programs and holidays, as well as at the Archon, National Honors Society, and graduation ceremonies.

Transformative Drama

Witness Theater One of the most impactful and unique experiences a student can have at the Yeshivah of Flatbush is to participate in our Witness Theater Program.

Witness Theater brings together Flatbush seniors and Holocaust survivors through a partnership with Selfhelp Community Services. The yearlong project connects the hearts and minds of the participants through an intergenerational collaborative journey. It culminates in a production of the survivors’ stories performed by the group on Yom Hashoah for the entire Flatbush community.

Hebrew Play The Jason Botnick A”H Memorial Hebrew Play, performed during Chanukah, is one of the artistic highlights of the school year.

Open to students of all grades, the musical is conducted exclusively in Hebrew. Students design the backdrop and work on their own costumes and makeup. Past productions include. “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”, “Les Miserables”, “The Wizard of Oz”, “Cinderella”, “Beauty & the Beast”, “Aladdin”, “Peter Pan” and “Little Shop of Horrors”.

Library The Yeshivah of Flatbush JBHS library is a central hub of information, technological resources and inviting discussion spaces. The library boasts a collection of outstanding and unique materials, both in print and online, in both general and Judaic studies, that offers students a wide range of quality resources to satisfy all academic and personal pursuits. Providing a secure, comfortable and welcoming environment conducive to reading, learning and group study, the library aims to spark the intellectual curiosity of each student. Our programs include Partners in Reading, Lunch and Lit, Book Day and so much more!

Publications Pegasus, The Literary & Arts Magazine Our annual award-winning literary and arts magazine is published once a year and is completely written, designed and published by the students. Students can choose to join Pegasus staff as a writer, artist, graphic designer or editor. This publication has been recognized in national competitions.

The Phoenix The Phoenix is the school newspaper, published several times a year, written entirely by students. Each issue features in-depth reporting on school news, upcoming events, sports, entertainment, Divrei Torah and more. The Phoenix gives students the opportunity to voice their opinions in an appropriate forum.

Summit Yearbook The senior staff of Summit is comprised of dedicated students who work diligently to give their classmates tangible memories of high school.

Experiental Learning

Heritage Trip To Poland The Heritage Trip to Poland offers a memorable experience for seniors to better connect with the lives of European Jews in the pre-Holocaust era and to understand the devastation of the Shoah. This program strengthens Jewish identity, awareness and the commitment to the Jewish people and the State of Israel.

New Orleans Mission Trip Select Seniors travel to New Orleans, Louisiana to take part in a wide array of chesed opportunities including repairing homes, ensuring energy efficient environments, and distributing food to the needy. Seniors also tour the historic New Orleans neighborhoods and learn about the Jewish community there. Fun activities such as Rock N Bowl and a jazz concert are also included.

Sephardic Heritage Trip The goal of the Sephardic Heritage Trip to Spain, Portugal and Gibraltar is to bring to life the glorious history and culture of Sephardic Jewry in its original setting through visits to multiple cities, museums, archaelogical sites and synagogues. Students experience the grandeur as well as the tragedy and ultimate destruction of Iberian Jewry. The trip enables students to better appreciate the richness and complexity of the history of Sephardic heritage.

Israel STEM and Entrepreneurship Trip During our weeklong STEM and Entrepreneurial trip to Israel, students have the opportunity to travel to Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Haifa to meet with inventors and visit start-up companies. Highlights include visits to PrimeSense, MobilEye, MiLab, G-Nius and Google Israel. Students work to brainstorm ideas for their own startups, build websites and learn how to pitch their ideas while exploring the possibility of careers in engineering.

Student Activities

Empowering Students At the Yeshivah of Flatbush, we offer our students over 120 extracurricular and co-curricular activities. We believe these experiences promote personal growth, heighten social awareness, and increase self-confidence. They also help our students develop good sportsmanship, work as a team, and take a “can do� approach to challenges. Through the many opportunities that Flatbush offers, students often find their passion and are inspired to choose their future career and life goals.

Student Government The SGO, Senior Council and Class Presidents all work together to advocate and plan on behalf of each and every student in the school. Some of the special programs include Color War, holiday events and class trips.

Athletics

The Falcon’s Nest The Falcon’s Nest is the home of our interscholastic athletic program and is an integral part of the Yeshivah of Flatbush experience. Participation as a Flatbush Falcon is a privilege and provides our students the unique opportunity to display derech eretz and midot such as responsibility, teamwork, fair play, loyalty, leadership and sportsmanship within the framework of athletic competition.

Research indicates that students who participate in extracurricular athletics learn how to budget their time more efficiently, score higher academically, are more self-confident and are more likely to make good choices in social settings.
