My name is Jaime Mendez, I'm from Bogotá Colombia and live in the United States since 1987, I immigrate first to New York City, stayed there three years and then moved to Seattle area, where I did my University studies. I stayed here for some years and then travelled to Miami where I worked for media, specially for radio broadcasting. Destiny took me again to New York, but today Seattle is my home.

My work experience

As almost every immigrant I have had a lot of jobs. I worked in a newspaper printing company, washed dishes, delivered pizzas, cut the grass, had a cleaning house company, made social service, worked as interpreter and traductor. It was after graduating when I started working on media.

At the beginning here in Seattle there wasn't any opportunity to have a full time job on media, but eventually the first radio station in Spanish was created. It worked 24 hours, 7 days a week. At that moment it was the 13.60 AM "Radio Sol" and now it’s "El Rey" 13.60. Some years later the first tv channel in Spanish arrived: Univision Seattle KUNS, channel 51. I have been working there for 15 years.

I also have a program with my partner Marvin Gaviria named "Al Grano" which was created during the pandemic to support the community with information that helps people with topics about the pandemic. The program has been very well accepted and has been very successful, and can bee seen as complimentary to the news. We are dedicated almost exclusively to inform about the pandemic. The program can be seen on the Facebook page, its name is AlGranoNW and at it’s transmitted simultaneously in the Jaime Mendez Univision Seattle page.

My personal life

Believe me or not is a little difficult for me to talk about my personal life. I love my country Colombia but I also feel American, because for most of my life I have lived in this country. I like making people laugh. I have a wonderful son, my mother lives here in Seattle, I have a brother who lives here, two other live in the United States, the rest of my family all of it lives in Colombia. I have a dog named Luna who is here with me, and her sister is named Sahali. They fight all the time.

I hope my story inspires people with the fact that I arrived to this country without money, papers or English language and I have been able to succeed. Let's concentrate on the reason we came here. We came here to succeed, to achieve prosperity, to improve our quality of life and also to improve our families’ quality of life. For now I think I will continue with Noticias Univision Seattle, and on the "Al Grano", things that fulfill my professional life. I think I will stay here for some years and later, maybe I will work more on community projects because I really like it. The fact that you succeed doesn't mean that you have to forget about other people. You don't have to walk all over some one else to be successful, for the contrary, together we can make more things. The Latin community here needs that unity, so let's do it all together. If we start pulling in the same direction we will move forward more quickly.

Mi nombre es Jaime Mendez, soy de Bogotá Colombia y vivo en los Estados Unidos desde 1987, primero emigré a la ciudad de Nueva York, permanecí ahí tres años y me mudé al área de Seattle, en donde realicé mis estudios universitarios. Permanecí aquí algunos años y después viaje a Miami en donde trabajé para los medios, especialmente para la radio. El destino me llevó de nuevo a Nueva York, pero hoy en día Seattle es mi hogar.

Mi experiencia de trabajo

Como casi todos los inmigrantes he tenido muchos trabajos. Trabajé en una imprenta de periódicos, lave trastes, repartí pizzas, corté céspedes y cree una empresa de limpieza de casas, hice servicio social, trabajé como intérprete y traductor. Despúes de graduarme fue cuando comencé a trabajar en los medios.

Al principio aquí en Seattle no había oportunidad de tener un trabajo de tiempo completo en los medios, pero pronto se creo la primera estación de radio en español. Funcionaba 24 horas, 7 día a la semana. En ese entonces era la 13.60 AM “Radio Sol” y ahora es “El Rey” 13.60

Unos años después llegó el primer canal de television en Español: Univisión Seattle KUNS, canal 51. He trabajado ahí por 15 años. También tengo un programa con mi socio Marvin Gaviria llamado "Al Grano" que fue creado durante la pandemia para apoyar a la comunidad con información que ayuda a las personas dándoles a conocer temas relacionados con la pandemia. El programa ha sido muy bien aceptado y tenido mucho éxito. Puede ser visto como un complemento de las noticias. Estamos dedicados casi exclusivamente a informar sobre la pandemia. El programa puede verse en la página de Facebook, se llama AlGranoNW y se transmite simultáneamente en la página Jaime Mendez Univisión Seattle.

Mi vida personal

Aunque no lo crean es un poco complicado para mí hablar sobre mi vida personal. Amo mi país Colombia, pero también me siento norteamericano, porque he vivido la mayor parte de mi vida en este país. Me gusta hacer reír a la gente. Tengo un hijo maravilloso, mi mamá vive aquí en Seattle, tengo un hermano que vive aquí, otros dos viven en los Estados Unidos, y todo el resto de mi familia vive en Colombia. Tengo un perro llamado Luna que está aquí conmigo y su hermana que se llama Sahali. Pelean todo el tiempo.

Por ahora creo que voy a continuar con Noticias Univisión Seattle y el programa “Al Grano”, porque son cosas que satisfacen mi vida profesional. Creo que seguiré aquí algunos años y quizá después trabaje más para proyectos comunitarios porque realmente me gusta. El hecho de que tengas éxito no significa que tienes que olvidarte de los demás. No tienes que pasar por encima de alguien para ser exitoso, al contrario, juntos podemos hacer más cosas. La Comunidad Latina necesita esa unidad, hagámoslo todos juntos.
