On Thursday 17th of September 2020, the class of 1ère CGEM (11th grade) went on a school trip to visit some landmarks in the South Finistère, in Brittany, France.

HARBOUR OF SAINT GUÉNOLÉ

Our first stop was the harbour of Saint Guénolé - near our school.

We calculated the tide, checked the tide times and looked at the lighthouse of Eckhmül.

It was around 8.45am when we arrived and it was already pretty sunny.

A good day was starting.

CHAPEL OF TRONOEN

Then, we went to the chapel of Tronoen and found the corresponding landmark on the nautical chart.

Notre-Dame-de-Tronoën is a 15th century chapel located in the bay of Audierne, which it dominates at a height of 30 meters.

It is famous for its Calvary, the oldest of the great Breton Calvaries.

HEAD OF LERVILY AND BAY OF TRÉPASSÉS

After that patrimonial stop, we drove to the head of Lervily where we did a bearing of the maritime buoyage on the chart.

We then drove to the bay of Trépassés and even saw the island of Sein on the coastline.

We could also see the lighthouse of Tévennec and La Vieille.

PICNIC AT THE HEAD OF MILLER

We were very hungry, so we stopped at the head of Miller to eat our picnics and enjoy the view at this landmark.

Our cooks prepared us a salad, a sandwich of meat and ham, some cheese, butter and crisps but also a banana for desert.

HEAD OF TOULINGUET AND HEAD OF THE SPANIARDS

We then drove for around an hour and did a quick stop at the head of Penhir, where we did a bearing of the distance to the semaphore.

To finish, we visited the head of Toulinguet, a very beautiful site with old bunkers from World War II. There, we asked an English tourist to take a group photo.

Before going back to school we took the bus towards our very last stop: head of the Spaniards we had a wonderful view on the harbour of Brest.

The expedition was a little long but it was fun and interesting.

We saw a few landmarks that we will be able to locate more easily on the charts in class and in our professional future. Since there are still many places that we couldn’t see, we might organize another school trip to visit them.
