The West Derby-born comedian is now an established favourite on the likes of Would I Lie to You?, QI and 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, but he has in fact been performing stand-up across the globe for almost two decades.

Enjoy!

ello and welcome to the latest edition of YM Liverpool magazine!
Plus we shine the spotlight on Castle Green’s stunning new Daresbury scheme in Development in Focus, our gardening expert Heather Marsh highlights a real late summer showstopper, and Tom Beattie gives his verdict on The Lake House Kitchen – a new restaurant located inside a multimillion-pound leisure hub on the Sefton Coast.
Even the most casual viewer of TV panel shows will no doubt be familiar with this month’s cover star, Chris McCausland.

In the midst of a massive 130-plus date national tour, Chris kindly found the time to chat with me about his route into comedy and exciting new Channel 4 series – whilst offering a refreshing take on inclusivity and accessibility.

Elsewhere, Annie S is here to help us navigate the awkward summer-to-autumn dressing dilemma with her latest edit, the interiors team at John Lewis offers its thoughts on what makes a great, flexible home, and Jon Atkinson from Liverpool’s WineTime recommends four brilliant bottles from the ‘New World’.

Forgive me if this is a bit of silly question, but how do you ‘watch’ the football?
You’re a massive Liverpool FC fan – do you manage to get home often for games?
I was born with retinitis pigmentosa, a genetic condition which affects the eyes. My vision deteriorated very steadily. Was my eyesight ever perfect? Maybe, maybe not. The time I became aware of it was when I was unable to see the blackboard in school and I realised I was a bit s**t at hide and seek!
spare ticket going, but if you can’t see, you can’t make as much of those opportunities to go to the game.
When you depend on other people for mobility and logistical issues, you need someone to go with you. My mates always seem to have a
My condition is hereditary and comes from my mum’s side. It’s like a 50/50 thing, whether you pass it on or not. They can’t test genetically, they can only test using traditional methods when a child is old enough. So we had to wait with my daughter but she hasn’t got it. All good on that score.
Whereabouts in Liverpool did you grow up?

For years now, I’ve paid my money to the lads over at The Anfield Wrap Living down here in London, they make you feel part of [the club]. If you don’t live in Liverpool anymore, you feel connected because of the amount of content they produce, and the way that they produce it – it’s done with a lot of heart.
Chris McCausland has been performing stand-up since 2003 and is an increasingly familiar face on our television screens. We caught up with the Liverpool-born funnyman during a mammoth national tour to discuss his unconventional route into comedy, exciting new Channel 4 series and why football commentary needs a serious rethink

Sometimes you get jokes out of [not being able to see] and sometimes you just sit there and let things happen.
I grew up in West Derby. We lived on Craigside Avenue and when I was about eight, we moved to another house approximately 85 metres around the corner. I attended St Mary’s Primary School in the village and after that ended up going to St Vincent’s School, which was for kids who had eyesight problems.

I mainly listen on the radio and to Steve Hunter’s match commentary through the LFC website. Football is one of those sports where there has been absolutely zero provision for its accessibility. The television commentary is abysmal – unless you can see the screen, it doesn’t tell you anything. If you can’t see the screen, it removes the social aspect of football because you can’t persuade your mates to come around and listen to the radio with you. So the
How did you first get into stand-up? I know you worked as a web developer after university. My degree is in software engineering but I was always a massive standup fan. The videos were always on my Christmas list, you know? It was always just a dare [to do stand-up] and in 2003 I did five minutes on stage. That’s how I got into it. It was a combination of that first gig being satisfactory and working in a call centre [that made me want to pursue a career in the industry]. I hammered the open mic circuit for two years after that. If I’d have been earning £150,000 a year, or in a high-flying job like John Bishop was, it might have been difficult to change careers – but I decided I’d be okay ditching the telesales job!
It’s a balancing act, you know? I did QI and we had a magician on – should they not have somebody demonstrating an idea like that because I can’t see what it is? The reality of the world is that it’s visual, and the reality of TV is that it’s visual. I think it’s almost as valuable for people at home to see me not seeing something, as it is to see it kind of Sometimesmanipulated.yougetjokes out of things and sometimes you just sit there and let it happen. I did Would I Lie To You? again recently and Lee Mack did a five-minute mimed synchronised swimming routine in front of me with zero sound! I’m sure in his head, Lee didn’t think: ‘Oh, well, Chris is here, so I’m not gonna go for these laughs’. It would be awful to know he did think that. He’s a comic and he wants the laughs. He did it and I took the piss out of him for doing it!
You’ve spoken in the past about how you disagree with viewers who sometimes get frustrated on your behalf when panel shows that you’re on use visual cues and gags. On TV and in your dayto-day life, do people often try and make accommodations for you when you don’t feel them necessary?
A clip of your hilarious performance with Lee at The BAFTAs earlier this year has been viewed well over six million times on the BBC Facebook account alone. I was interested to read that you thought it was a bit of a gamble to do the sketch. Why is that?

you’re kind of torn between either listening on the radio, and knowing what’s going on, or doing the social thing with your mates, and not really following the game.
INTERVIEW YM Liverpool 5
Back in the ’80s, before Sky, loads of people used to turn down the TV volume and listen to the radio because the commentary was better. When cable TV came out, everything went out of sync, and you couldn’t do that anymore. I think there is definitely a market out there for a service which offers people at least two commentary streams – so that you can choose the traditional TV one or the more immersive radio one. A lot of people who can see normally enjoy the more exciting commentary.
People try and be helpful. For example, I’ll be in a restaurant and the waiter will give me a Braille menu. I can’t read Braille – it’s just dots to me. But people will always try to accommodate you – sometimes it’s not something that works for you or that youWhenneed.itcomes to TV, I’d rather have people get a little bit offended on my behalf than have ardent fans of the show going:
‘Oh, every time he’s on it’s not the same show’. For instance, people put my name forward as a possible contestant on Taskmaster but I don’t think that would work. I don’t think the show could facilitate me being on it and and if it did, I think it would become something it’s not.
A lot of the time when people do these award shows, they either just announce the winner or they try and come up with a joke on the spot and it’s cringy. Me and Lee decided to prepare something and do something a bit funnier. But as with any comedy, you don’t know

how an audience is going to react to it. The more prepared and the more elaborate the idea is, the harder it is to bail out on it. We were hoping it was funny as we were doing it on live TV, in front of the entire TV industry – everybody that could ever give us a job. Before we went on, I said to Lee: ‘Actually, should we just do the nominations?!’. But we went out and as soon as we got the first laugh, it was like: ‘Okay, this is going to be fine’.
You’re coming back to Merseyside in October to play the Southport Comedy Festival and then again next February for two dates in Liverpool. Do you look forward to returning to your hometown to perform? Historically, no. It terrified me! It probably terrified me more than playing anywhere else. Doing clubs like the Slaughterhouse and the Hot Water [Comedy Club] – I always loved that. But the pressure of having to sell tickets for just me in Liverpool, and the thought of it just being teachers and aunties, it made me feel
Finally, you’re set to appear in a new Channel 4 series which will see you visit some of the world’s most iconic landmarks – joined by a different celebrity guest each episode. Can you tell us more about the show? I’ve got no ambition to travel. Over the last 12 years or so I’ve had to travel for work, weddings, etc. but I can’t remember the last holiday I went on that was just ‘a holiday’ – they’ve all been for a purpose. I’ve been to places like Singapore, Malaysia and India, but always for gigs. If you were to say to me: ‘Do you want to go and see the pyramids? Or do you want to spend a week at home?’ I’d take the week at Ifhome.someone’s going to describe The Treasury in Petra, Jordan, they might as well do that from a photo in my living room! What’s the point in me going there?
sick! You want people to think you’re doing well, whatever you’re doing. Your fears are exaggerated aren’t they, but the stress of it was overwhelming at times. The lovely thing is that now, with all the telly stuff, that fear has been alleviated to some extent and I’m just really excited about playing Liverpool.
having to sell tickets for just me in Liverpool made me feel sick!
So the idea is, each episode a different comedian will take me, or drag me, to one of these amazing places, and prove to me that there’s more going on than just the visual aspect. We’ve done Jordan already and we’re going to Rome soon. Can these comedians prove to me that it’s worth getting up of my arse to visit these places that are known for their wondrous aesthetics? I like being proven wrong so I’m enthusiastic about it!

If like me, you have been coming to the Sefton Coast for many years – wind, rain or shine – then the news of The Lake House’s multi-million-pound transformation will have filled you with a sense of anticipation.
My guest and I weren’t quite sure what to expect at The Lake House, with the building’s new guise still a little shrouded in mystery.
As somebody who often can’t think of anything better than braving the elements down at Crosby Beach on my days off, I have to say that I have a real vested interest in the fortunes of this revitalised venue.
If our main courses perhaps lacked that bit of a ‘wow factor’ in some respects, our desserts more than made up for it. A masterclass in everything desserts should be –indulgent, comforting and moreish.

With the success of the nearby Bus Yard beachside bar over the summer, it’s great to see the area constantly evolving. Ideas for how to keep this beloved Merseyside area fresh and modern are clearly not in short supply. In many ways, The Lake House stands as a gleaming symbol of this forward thinking.
The combination of fresh cod and crispy batter was as much of a classic one as ever. I particularly enjoyed the homemade tartare sauce as well, which really helped to bring the whole dish together – as it so often does. My guest, seemingly in a generous mood, allowed me a try of his burger, which did not disappoint – thanks in no small part to the house relish and Emmental cheese.
with a difficult choice when it came to rounding off proceedings. In the end, however, I decided to go with an old childhood favourite in the form of the sticky toffee pudding – served with lashings of butterscotch sauce, vanilla pod ice cream and candied nuts. My guest plumped for the equally enticing strawberry and mascarpone cheesecake.Whenthe puddings presented themselves, the pair of us were grinning from ear to ear. The initial excitement was thankfully not unfounded with The Lake Kitchen very much saving the best until last.
Seated inside the glass-fronted dining room, my guest and I quickly set about getting ourselves acquainted with the all-day menu which lists such favourites as American-style fluffy pancakes as part of its brunch offering alongside classics like the tempting pan-fried steak baguette. After some deliberation, I opted for the beer-battered fish and triple-cooked chips (£14.50), which I hoped would satisfy a craving that had been built up during a walk along the seafront. My guest found himself in a similar boat and so The Lake House burger with skinny fries
With honest, satisfying food as well as a truly stunning setting, The Lake House Kitchen is nothing short of a gem. We look forward to next time!

What do I need to provide to tenants?

Within 30 days of a tenant paying their deposit, you are legally required to place this in a tenancy deposit protection scheme and to provide the tenant with the details. This ensures that the tenant will get their deposit back as long as they fulfil their obligations under the tenancy.
When a new tenant moves in, you are legally required to provide them with certain documents. It is important to do this as failure to provide them can prevent you from being able to serve a notice on a problematic tenant in theLandlordsfuture.

Serving an eviction notice to a tenant might seem like a simple task, but many landlords who do so without seeking
legal advice mistakenly serve invalid notices which can delay the eviction process. This can prove a timely and costly error to the landlord. If you need to serve notice on a tenant, call Paul Crowley & Co’s dedicated conveyancing team for expert legal advice.

Our homes have needed to flex more than ever in recent times, but with clever design, your space can face whatever life throws at it…livinglife

Behavioural psychologist Honey Langcaster-James suggests that creating multiple room ‘zones’ is helping us mentally cope with living in close range to each other and spending long periods at home. “We need variety in our environment and positive social contact with others. When we spend time together, many of us feel nourished on a social level, but we also have to respond to each other and accommodate one another’s needs and behaviours. Something as simple as separating off an area with a curtain, or a screen, or turning a sofa around so the one side is for relaxing and the space behind is for working can make all the difference.”
n MAKE THE MOST OF EVERY CORNER
Make occasional pieces lightweight – you’ll be more likely to move a coffee table out of the way for a yoga session if it’s easy to lift. One of the simplest updates for a living room that can work in many guises all day long is a pouffe or footstool, such as the Bobbin. Pop a tray on it for a quick snack, prop your feet up after a long day, use for a quick tidy-up thanks to its hidden storage, or pull it out as a casual extra seat.

n CREATE SPACE FOR YOUR NEW ‘NORMAL’
YM LiverpoolHOME17
AHH, OUR HOMES… what were once seen as our castles where we could relax after work or entertain on the weekends are now – on any given day – classrooms, playrooms, boardrooms, yoga studios, restaurants, cocktail bars and more. Some of these changes will be temporary, while others will become permanent, yet what impact has this had on the way we live today?
But what to do with all of these extra things that our flexible lifestyles have acquired – whether that’s a breadmaker, exercise bike or blackboard? “Good storage is key,” says partner & home design stylist Wil Law. “You just can’t close the door on open-plan spaces. Rooms that were once a fusion of kitchen, dining and living have become so much more.” Look for cabinets to store office essentials, open shelving units positioned next to the dining table, for easy clear-up time, side tables next to a comfortable chair and baskets for quick tidy-ups.

So what makes a great, flexible home?
In a flexible space, there are some pieces of furniture that will work harder than others, so it’s important to shop wisely and choose something that you love. Dining tables can change in a flash from homework stations to boardroom tables, baking spots to dine-in restaurants. Choose a design that can extend, boosting its flexibility, teaming with a bench and dining chairs that could double up as home office additions as and when needed.
n LOVE THOSE KEY PIECES
To max out your home’s flexible potential, you need to create multifunctional zones within rooms, especially in those larger open-plan spaces. These can be quickly rearranged throughout the day, to meet the different needs of the household; a spare room is used as a gym every morning, before transitioning into an office space, a playzone is set up in the living room, before being tidied away every evening for the grown-ups to relax.
Use a corner sofa to section off a zone, choosing a mid-dark colour that will withstand its close proximity to the kitchen.
As John Lewis partner & futurologist John Vary explains: “COVID-19 amplified the need for our spaces to become really agile. One minute we’re on a video call, the next we’re looking for ideas to support our children’s learning. So our homes have become more flexible, with multiple configurations. Design and products of the future must align with this agility, providing modular options in effortless ways.”
Find a nook for a comfy chair where you can sit and read, create a moveable homework station using a trolley, or create a kids’ crafting area with a small table and chairs.

Don’t forget the personalisation, with accessories that reflect your household – whether that’s soft neutrals or fun brights.

It’s difficult to say how much money you need before you stop work, because it really depends on what you want to do. Many people fund their retirement from a range of sources, including property, Cash ISA savings, Stocks & Shares ISAs, earnings, state pension and private pension pots.
The levels and bases of taxation, and reliefs from taxation, can change at any time. The value of any tax relief is generally dependent on individual circumstances.
It’s not enough to have savings, you also need a plan – and that’s why it’s a good idea to seek financial advice. It’s best to meet with your financial adviser regularly so they can look holistically at your situation and help you gauge what age you could retire, the lifestyle you could expect to have, and put a plan in place aiming to achieve your retirement goals.

When you’re considering your future and what to do with your money, it’s vital to ensure your financial security will continue into later life, when you’re no longer earning an income. The
Retirement has changed substantially from what it was for previous generations. It used to be the norm to spend a 30-year career in one profession, often with one or two employers, and for people to stop working entirely once they reached retirement age, which was usually around 60 to 65 years old.
With so many years ahead of you, it’s important to work out how you will fund them.
How much should you have in savings before retiring?

Why planning is important
will help ensure you can enjoy the future you want.
For previous generations, retirement was often seen as the beginning of one’s twilight years, and people expected to spend the rest of their lives winding down. But nowadays, age 60 is not ‘old’, given that many people who are currently in the workforce can expect to live much longer.
How late is too late to start saving for retirement?
Reaching retirement age is not an ending, it’s the start of a new chapter in life. Putting the right plan in place
Rhodes Brook Financial Limited is an Appointed Representative of and represents only St. James’s Place Wealth Management plc (which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority) for the purpose of advising solely on the group’s wealth management products and services, more details of which are set out on the group’s website www.sjp.co.uk/products. ‘St. James’s Place Partnership’ and titles ‘Partner’ and ‘Partner Practice’ are marketing terms used to describe St. James’s Place representatives.
This can be beneficial, because money can be withdrawn from each of these in different ways; for example, ISA savings can often be withdrawn tax free on demand (depending on the type of ISA), pensions allow people to withdraw a tax-free lump sum at retirement age, while income from a rental property may be monthly.
the

The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than the amount invested.
This is also useful because people tend to spend different amounts during different phases of their retirement – for example, a year spent travelling the world is likely to cost more than a year spent working part-time. You may also find your spending falls as you get older.

Pinot Gris is a late harvested version of Pinot Grigio and although genetically the same, the two ‘styles’ are definitely distinct; personally, I find ‘Gris’ far more interesting, and whilst I believe the best examples are from Alsace in France, this is an excellent introduction. £11.50

Whilst the majority of wines ‘badged’ as New World will undoubtedly come from outside of the classic European regions, there are areas within Europe where there is more flexibility. These largely come under the IGP (formerly Vin de Pays, Vino de la Tierra, etc.) banner, where greater experimentation in terms of choice of grape varieties and winemaking techniques is allowed.

Wandering down the wine aisle in pretty much any supermarket, you could be forgiven for thinking that the New World, Australia in particular, was responsible for the vast majority of wine produced. However, France, Italy and Spain all produce significantly more wine than any one country in the southern hemisphere. This begs the question as to why New World wines have become so fashionable. One theory is that varietal labelling makes them easier to understand. Another is that their largely straightforward, accessible, fruit-driven style makes for easier and/or less formal drinking. Whatever the reason, they are undoubtedly hugely popular and will continue to be so.

Viña Las Perdices Mendoza Albariño Reserve 2020

Albariño has rapidly established itself as one of the more popular white varieties – delicious to drink as an aperitif and fantastic when paired with seafood. It’s believed to have originated from northern Portugal, where it is known as Alvarinho, but it is over the border in the Rías Baixas region of Galicia that it has really come into its own. This excellent example comes from somewhat further afield – Argentina to be precise. The Muñoz brothers at Viña Las Perdices in the highly regarded Agrelo sub-zone of Mendoza grow a bewilderingly wide range of varieties, any number of which I’d have been happy to feature here. This, however, is a superb example; crisp and fresh, yet rich with a delicate peach character. £14.95
Outnumbered Wairarapa Pinot Gris 2021
WITHIN THE WINE TRADE, the term ‘New World’ is broadly regarded as any wine-producing country or region outside of Europeessentially encompassing the southern hemisphere and North America. However, legendary wine broadcaster Oz Clarke puts a different and arguably more pertinent spin on the matter: “New World is more a matter of winemaking philosophy than geography”. The implication is that outside of the classic European wine regions, winemakers are not bound by the constraints of rules laid down by AOP, DOP, other governing bodies that determine which grapes can be grown, where they can be grown, in what quantities, and any number of further regulations largely determined by tradition.
Mount Vernon Simonsberg-Paarl Malbec 2018

Mount Vernon is the jewel in the crown of Gravel Junction wines – run by John Hooper with his wife Deborah, the cellar master. They are based at Klapmuts – a small town at the foot of a hill with the same name which sits in between the WOs of Paarl and Stellenbosch. Despite its increasing popularity in the UK and USA, Malbec is still unusual in South Africa. Matured in French oak barrels for 18 months, this is deep, magenta with an enticing ripe berry nose packed with mulberry and blackberry followed by attractive earthy and oaky notes. Deep, rich and full in the mouth where chocolate and ripe plum add to the complexity of ever-developing flavours. £10.99
South Africa is a little different to the rest of the southern hemisphere – with more than 400 years of winemaking heritage, its winemakers have been known to feel a sense of indignation at being lumped in with the ‘Johnny-come-latelies’ of Australasia and South America. Indeed, many Cape wines seem to encompass a more elegant style that sits in between the classical European ‘model’ and the more fruitforward style we have come to expect from Australia, California et al.

Fashionably late
Heather Marsh shines the spotlight on hydrangeas – a real late summer showstopper

28 YM Liverpool
WITH THE KIDS BACK AT SCHOOL and our gardens looking exhausted after a long hot summer, you’d be forgiven for thinking that was it for another year. But nature always seems to have a way of pulling through and there are plenty of plants which will put on a show just when you think it’s all over. None more so than those late summer showstoppers – the hydrangeas. Now I know a lot of you may consider them dated, even kitsch, reminiscent of bungalows front gardens by the sea, but I think that’s a bit unfair and anyway, I’ve no time for horticultural snobbery.
Most species we grow here in the UK originated in China and Japan and there are over 70 varieties to choose from. There are two main
Big and bold, hydrangeas come in all shades of pink, blue and white, and their fabulously long-lasting flower heads look stunning grown in borders or containers. The climbing varieties are fantastic to clothe a north-facing wall or even as a cut flower.

The name hydrangea comes from the Greek ‘hydor’, meaning water, and ‘angos’, meaning jar or vessel. So unsurpingsly, they do like a drink and can be quite a thirsty plant. I recommend growing them in semi-shade, although they can tolerate the sun as long as the soil isn’t too dry. However, this year when it got very warm, some of my wellestablished hydrangeas did start to wilt in what I consider to be a shady part of the garden. Thankfully, a good soaking with a bowl of spent washing up water soon restored them to their floral glory.
types you’ll easily recognise – mopheads, probably most grown with big global shaped flower heads, and lacecaps, the more delicate and frothier of the two. Hydrangeas are a hardy sort and will grow in most any soil type. Having said that, the colour of the hydrangea all depends on the mineral content of your soil. My mum used to say if you wanted to keep the blue varieties that beautiful shade, be certain to dig a handful of rusty nails in when planting. I’m very dubious about
What to pick? Oh my goodness... I hope you’ve plenty of room as you’re spoilt for choice! If you have the space in your garden, I’d start with the larger more traditional-looking mopheads like hydrangea macrophylla ‘King George’, a gorgeous deep pink beauty. Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Ayesha’ is another mophead with florets of lavender flowerheads that last for weeks and weeks. Hydrangea arborescens ‘Strong Annabelle’ meanwhile, has huge white flower heads – quite literally the size of footballs.

Now for the lacecaps, and one that appears delicate but is in fact very hardy is hydrangea macrophylla ‘Veitchii’ – a pretty pale pink stunner. I have to recommend a blue variety as well, and hydrangea serrata ‘Bluebird’ is beautiful with this lacecap having the added bonus of rich autumn foliage. However, if I had to choose just a single hydrangea it would have to be one I’ve only just recently discovered and was blown away by – hydrangea paniculata ‘Limelight’. This panicle variety is nothing short of breathtaking. Its large conical flowerheads that fade from cream turning to a blush pink are simply spectacular. Other pandiculates I love are ‘Vanilla Fraise’, ‘Confetti’ and ‘Magical Moonlight’ – beautiful by name and by nature! For containers, consider smaller more compact varieties like H.Serrata, H.Belladonna or the delicious sounding H.Blueberry Cheesecake

this method and can’t say it works, so please don’t hold me accountable if it doesn’t! Far better, I would say, is to get a soil tester kit and find out your soil’s pH balance as this is really what determines the colour. Fertiliser low in phosphorus and high in potassium will give you a blue colour – as will growing your plant in peat-free ericaceous compost and watering with rainwater only. It’s quite a complex business and I would be inclined to just see what happens! However, if you are unable to keep the colour you want after one season, dig the hydrangeas up and plant them in containers where with the correct pH compost, they will thrive. If you don’t want any bother whatsoever and low maintenance is key – go for a white hydrangea
White flowering varieties do not retain the pH and so are completely unaffected by the type of soil they are grown in.
