ello and welcome to the latest edition of YM Liverpool! In the month that sees Eurovision take over our city, I’m absolutely delighted to bring you my chat with Julia Sanina, the Ukrainian co-host of this year’s contest. As someone with very proud links to Ukraine (my grandfather was born in a small village 60 miles south of Lviv called Hoshiv), it was fantastic to hear how welcome Julia has felt since arriving in Liverpool and why she thinks it’s a “wonderful place” for the pop music extravaganza. More importantly, however, the singer also told me how she hopes Eurovision will help refocus minds on her nation’s plight – more than 14 months since Russia’s full-scale invasion began. On the theme of hope, our gardening expert Heather Marsh explores the significance of the sunflower which has been used as a symbol of peace throughout Ukraine’s history. Meanwhile, Annie S shares her favourite fashion pieces for a Eurovision party and we round-up four of the best music festivals you can enjoy this summer. Alongside Alesha Dixon and Hannah Waddingham, she will host the Eurovision Song Contest Grand Final to a global TV audience of 160 million people. Julia discusses the responsibility she feels as Ukraine’s sole on-stage presenter and how she hopes Eurovision will help refocus minds on her nation’s plight words lawrence saunders
Have you felt welcomed by the people of Liverpool since you arrived in the city? I love Liverpool! It’s such a beautiful city with friendly people. I’ve seen so many Ukrainian flags and Ukrainian colours all over the city centre. I’ve also visited the beautiful Liverpool Cathedral and a place where Ukrainians and Liverpool citizens can pray for Ukraine. It was so heartwarming for me. I think Liverpool is a wonderful place to have Eurovision.

How important is it that Ukraine, and the situation in the country, is properly recognised and highlighted during Eurovision? For me, it’s super important. I think that all Ukrainians feel support from the whole civilised world. Unfortunately, it’s still too unsafe in Kyiv for us to host Eurovision and we all understand that. We are so grateful that the UK is hosting on behalf of Ukraine and I see a mix and synergy of two different cultures. There will be a lot of Ukraine in this Eurovision – lots of Ukrainian performances and performers. I’ve seen a lot of Ukrainians working here backstage at Eurovision as well. This attention on Ukraine is very important. It’s important that people are talking about Ukraine, that people are seeing Ukrainian culture, Ukrainian colours, the Ukrainian pysanky eggs on display in Liverpool ONE and even The Beatles statues at Pier Head wearing Ukrainian vyshyvanka (traditional embroidered shirts). Everything means a lot to us. We are still fighting. The war is not over. We don’t know when we will have that victory and we need your support. Do you feel any pressure as Ukraine’s sole presenter on stage at this year’s Eurovision? Not pressure but certainly a sense of responsibility because I will be the only Ukrainian host on the stage. I know that Ukrainians will definitely watch Eurovision this year because they are all waiting to hear Ukrainian songs and to see something from Ukraine. Of course, all [Ukrainians] are behind me and I feel that huge support. The whole nation is standing with me and I know that I am responsible for doing my job perfectly so I can make them proud. I’m preparing some wonderful outfits created by Ukrainian designers and lots of surprise moments!

Given the situation in Ukraine, will many people in the country be tuning in for Eurovision? Eurovision in Ukraine is always huge. We love this show very much. We always see the Eurovision stage as a big international platform where we can display our culture and show that we are different from Russia. We are not part of Russia – we have our own culture and our own language. Before this full invasion, many people only knew that Ukraine was a country near Russia and about Chernobyl and the Klitschko brothers. Unfortunately, the price has been too high, but now we can be seen and heard by the whole world. This is why I think Ukrainians will definitely watch Eurovision this year. Ukraine is still under attack, especially the south of the country. The largest military attack seen

since World War Two is going on right now in the centre of Europe but even in the bomb shelters we have the internet and I think people will need that couple of hours of joy and celebration of Ukrainian culture. I think they will be proud of what we, together with the UK, will do on the stage. Are you excited to be performing with your band The HARDKISS during the semi-final? Yes, of course! We will sing our song ‘Маяк’, which means ‘lighthouse’ in English. This will be mixed with a very popular British song which I can’t name now because it’s a secret! But the main ideas behind both songs are the same. It’s about unification, support, sisterhood, brotherhood, and love, and the idea that hand in hand, we have to stay together. The whole idea of Eurovision in the first place was unification after World War Two – the organisers wanted people to come together and support each other. This year’s Eurovision, like last year’s event, is about much more than just entertainment. Are you hoping Liverpool hosting Eurovision on behalf of Ukraine will help put more focus on the plight of your country? Especially given the war has now been ongoing for more than a year. Of course. A year is a huge period of time and unfortunately, people forget [what is happening in Ukraine]. It’s just how psychology works. We try to forget some things and put them back and away [in our minds]. But we need to understand that Ukraine is fighting not only for its own territories, but for international law, justice and the European idea. We hope that people will not forget what we are going through right now and that they will stand with us in the future. From a historic gig to a high-speed car chase, May has has featured plenty of memorable moments for our Fab Four down the years words and pictures leslie priestley

In May 1969, seven years after the release of Please Please Me, The Beatles regrouped with photographer Angus McBean at EMI House to shoot the cover image for their next album. The famous snap, taken at the same location as their debut LP, was shelved – eventually reappearing on the cover of their 1967-1970 ‘Blue Album’ compilation. The picture showed how much The Beatles’ image had changed since the beginning of the 60s – to think in 1963 they were accused of having long hair! The Beatles’ final album, released in May 1970, was for all intents and purposes the soundtrack to their fifth and final film Let It Be. Recorded with a back-to-basics ethos the album became the only Beatles’ full-length release issued exclusively in stereo. Taking us right up to the present day, and only a short distance from the site of the original Cavern Club, Beatles’ fans now have the chance to view previously unseen stage set designs created by Paul McCartney in 1966. The personally annotated sketches recently went on display for the first time before an invited audience at the Liverpool Beatles Museum. Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein invited Paul to design the stage backdrops to promote plays and rock concerts at The Saville Theatre, which he leased in 1965. Paul drew 12 intriguing designs which he thought would cater for a variety of entertainers. Design number eight was chosen for the backdrop of the Four Tops’ only UK appearance in 1966. All 12 designs will remain on display at the Mathew Street museum for the foreseeable future.

n Tuesday, 10 May 1960, The Silver Beetles auditioned alongside other local bands for the chance to back Liverpool singer Billy Fury on a summer ‘Idols on Parade’ tour. The Silver Beetles were unsuccessful, but as the second-best band, they were offered the chance to support singer Johnny Gentle on a tour of Scotland instead. The first night of Gentle’s tour started on 20 May at Alloa Town Hall with The Silver Beetles as his backing band. The group adopted aliases for the duration of the tour; Long John (John Lennon), Paul Ramon (Paul McCartney), Carl Harrison (George Harrison), Stuart de Staël (Stuart Sutcliffe), while drummer Tommy Moore became... Thomas Moore. At the beginning of May 1966, the band now known as simply ‘The Beatles’, gave their last ever scheduled live performance in the UK at the New Musical Express Annual Poll-Winners’ All-Star Concert in Wembley, London. Sadly for Beatles’ fans, the band’s 15-minute set wasn’t filmed as terms hadn’t been agreed upon with the respective managers of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones for their artists to be shown on television. Fortunately, footage does at least exist of The Beatles receiving their poll awards. Later that May, John’s iconic Rolls Royce was delivered to his sixbedroom mansion in Weybridge, Surrey. It wouldn’t be long before the psychedelic motor got him into trouble, however. Chased by autograph hunters in Middlesex, John was pulled over by the police and fined for speeding. Once the coppers had finished booking the famous Beatle, the chasers finally managed to secure their precious ink.

Not since Jürgen Klopp first graced our city has a German import caused such excitement and buzz. Albert’s Schloss opened on Bold Street at the end of last year. If you hadn’t heard of the alpine retreat-themed restaurant before then, you certainly will have since. Word-of-mouth spread quickly after its opening and booking became essential if you wanted to experience what all of the excitement was about. Walking into the restaurant opposite Liverpool Central’s Bold St exit, you immediately understand why it leaves such an impression on its patrons. Before any indulgent dishes have touched your lips, you are met with the essence of what makes Albert’s Schloss so popular. Somehow the intimate feel of the ski lodge is retained despite its impressive size. This is down to the detail and to the fact that every inch is on brand, from the Bavarian coat of arm wall tiles to the table within a cable car.
As any self-respecting egg connoisseur will tell you, it’s all about the yolk. The yoghurt and garlic in the Turkish eggs were a particular standout.

Arriving for breakfast, we were escorted to our table near the bar which housed an impressive array of every bottled beverage you could think of. Impressed but not tempted at this sensible hour, we opted for a hot chocolate and a flat white. A glance to the far side of the room provided some insight into what kind of atmosphere the room is capable of – a stage set up for a live band. The electric evenings at Albert’s Schloss are a big part of why so many are talking about it. Even the ladies’ toilets have a DIY disco option to ensure the party never stops. Somehow, however, a venue that is well known for its high-octane energy is able to cultivate a relaxed cosiness at breakfast. The staff were busy but not rushing and the atmosphere left us feeling super comfortable. You can imagine a slightly worse-for-wear group recuperating well here the morning after the night before. Mightily impressed by our drinks, we ordered breakfast. The waiter was knowledgeable and thorough when asked about dietary information from both myself and my pregnant partner. Our dishes – avocado and poached egg and Turkish eggs – arrived shortly after and we didn’t waste any time tucking in. As any self-respecting egg connoisseur will tell you, it’s all about the yolk. Taste and colour. The deep gold was the first
win for both dishes and the unreal taste wasn’t far behind. The yoghurt and garlic complimenting the Turkish eggs were a particular standout as well. If this is what the breakfast menu offers, we can’t wait to return and experience what the evening has in store. That Albert’s Schloss has proved such a hit in this city is no surprise at all. The energy of a Bavarian beer hall was always going to be welcomed with open arms. Albert’s Schloss has everything Liverpool and its people love most – outsiders, joy and camaraderie. Get down when you can, just don’t forget to book.

What is a Delayed Cancer Diagnosis?
In some cases, a patient will live with cancer for a long time before being diagnosed because they do not display classic symptoms. Port in a Storm Jon Atkinson on why this Portuguese potion isn’t just for Christmas
I LOVE THIS MOST FAMOUS of fortified wines and only wish that I could justify drinking it on a more regular basis. Mrs Wine Time and I did briefly flirt with the idea of having a glass of port instead of opening a second bottle of red on those occasions when we fancied an extra glass or two… those who know me won’t be surprised to hear that the singular ‘glass’ invariably multiplied so the idea was sadly, but inevitably ‘mothballed.’ I know plenty of people who maintain that port always gives them a hangover, although they invariably seem to forget about the gin & tonic, white wine, red wine, etc that went before it – surely port shouldn’t take all the blame for one’s earlier excesses! The bottom line is that port is delicious and deserves far
greater appreciation – one just needs to bear in mind that it is typically 30 – 40% stronger than most red table wine so think ‘quality rather than quantity’ when drinking it, indeed this is a good mantra to apply to pretty much all drinks! So, what exactly is port? In short, it is a fortified wine, that is to say, a wine in which the natural fermentation has been arrested by the addition of grape spirit (brandy). In the case of port, this both increases the alcohol to the region of 20% but also ensures that there is a good amount of residual sugar to sweeten the wine. In the trade, we tend to divide port into wood-matured and bottle-matured, although in truth most port will spend at least a short spell in wood. A more practical
division might be between ruby and tawny, with better-quality examples of the latter spending significantly longer in barrel which is where its tawny colouration and more savoury characteristics develop. As its name implies, ruby has a more vivid colour with the wines typically being more fruity and spicier than their wood-aged counterparts. This ‘category’ includes vintage port, which needs (plenty of) time to mature and should also be decanted, and the more ‘accessible’ LBV (late bottled vintage) which aims to replicate the style of vintage, but without the ‘fuss’. Port is also made as white and rosé and whilst both styles could be considered ‘niche’ they do enjoy a loyal, albeit relatively small following.
Kopke Late Bottled Vintage 2018 This delicious LBV is made from a blend of native varieties including Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz resulting in a port that has a vivid purple-ruby colour with intense, spicy aromas of plum and damson. The palate is intensely flavoured with dark chocolate, ripe plum and peppery notes. Aged in wood for four to six years, LBV is released when it is ready to drink with no decanting required and once opened a bottle can (potentially!) be kept for a couple of months or more. £19.50
Ramos Pinto ‘Quinta da Ervamoira’ 10-year-old Tawny RP owns four individual Quintas (farms) in the Douro, totalling 286 hectares, which provides for all of their needs. Qta da Ervamoira is in the Douro Superior and lends its name to this outstanding 10-year-old Tawny which has an attractive, pale mahogany colour with seductive aromas of candied fruits and walnuts. The palate is both rich and smooth with flavours of raisins and prunes with underlying, spicy oak and a hint of dark chocolate. Tawny is a surprisingly versatile drink, delicious served chilled as an aperitif as well as in the usual post-prandial contexts. Again, no need to decant or polish off all in one sitting! £39.50
Fonseca ‘Guimaraens’ Vintage Port 2008 Fonseca is a very highly-regarded, ‘blue-chip’ producer that was established in 1815 with a reputation for superlative vintage ports. Guimaraens is actually a second label that was conceived in the 1950s to feed a surge in demand for vintage port. It is produced in ‘non-classic’ vintages so, whilst it does not have the concentration or complexity of Fonseca vintage, it is released pretty much ready to drink. It does still need decanting however and as such is best reserved for those gatherings where it will be consumed in one sitting. All in all, a fantastic finish to a good meal with good company. £34.50
Lou Miranda Estate ‘Leone’ aged Tawny Okay, so this one isn’t actually port, at least it can’t be called port because it comes from the Barossa Valley in Australia. Port is a protected designation and can only come from the Douro Valley in northern Portugal. That being said, this is rather splendid, if a little sweeter and richer than a regular Tawny port – made at Lou Miranda Estate, a boutique Australian producer which produces an excellent range of fortified wines. This one makes friends very easily including Oz Clarke no less when we showed it at a Three Wine Men tasting some years ago. £21

Festival getaways Liverpool Sound City’s 28-30 April return signalled the start of 2023’s festival season. train users are advised to head to Macclesfield station to catch a coach to the site. WHEN IS IT? 13-16 July WHAT’S HAPPENING? Beat-Herder 2023 is shaping up into another wonderful weekend of internationally acclaimed bands, world-renowned DJs,
breakthrough artists and absolute party starters. A host of talent will be on display across 12 stages including Pendulum (Live), Alison Goldfrapp, Confidence Man and Peter Hook & the Light – with more acts to be announced soon. Can you tell us a bit about your background in dentistry and why you opened Kamran Rasul Aesthetic & Cosmetic Dentistry?
After graduating from The University of Manchester in 2006, I worked in multiple NHS and private practices which helped me build up my skills. About two years ago I decided it was the right time to do my own thing and I started planning this practice.
You launched your clinic on Chapel Street last July. How have the first nine months been?
It’s been unbelievable. It’s built gradually over the months, and we’ve just gone from strength to strength. We’ve benefitted from a lot of word-of-mouth referrals. Our clients love everything that we do and the building itself is amazing.
What are some of the most popular treatments at the clinic? The majority of our treatments tend to be the likes of composite bonding, composite veneers, Invisalign, and ceramic veneers and implants.
Aside from cosmetic dental procedures, do you offer general dentistry treatments as well? Yes. We provide a complete range of 30 YM Liverpool

Everyone has a price point at the end of the day, and it’s cheap dentistry. But in my opinion, you get what you pay for. Unfortunately, we fix a lot of the work

done abroad and it costs significantly more for the patient. What people have been told will be a cheap deal, ends up costing them a lot more in the long run. I wouldn’t say it was bad work, per se, but it is done cheaply and when you buy cheap, you buy twice.
What other issues can arise with patients who travel abroad for dental work?
A lot of the time, the information that patients receive from foreign clinics is not true and honest. In many cases, people are under the impression they are getting a set of veneers when they actually end up with crowns, which is a much more invasive treatment. These clinics operate like conveyor belts – you’re in and you’re out. If you have any problems with the treatment, or if you’re in pain, you are looking at spending hundreds of pounds on flights and hotels before you can be seen again. Fortunately, we have the ability to fix a lot of what goes wrong, but unfortunately, it does cost a lot more for the patient.
What are your hopes for the business moving forward?
To keep going from strength to strength and maybe open a new site but I don’t know because it’s a lot of work!

Construction work begins at £70 million development on edge of Liverpool city centre Expected to complete by June 2025, Scholar’s Court will feature 310 units across four blocks

ourced Development Group has officially started work on its new apartment complex located between Blackstock Street and Paul Street. The property group, which secured planning permission for the project last year, says it is delivering an “exciting scheme to revitalise the northern corridor of Liverpool’s central regeneration zone”. The fourth development by Sourced in less than five years, Scholar’s Court will feature 310 one and two-bedroom units across four blocks. Located a short distance from Everton FC’s new Bramley-Moore Dock stadium, communal facilities at the scheme, which has a gross development value of £70 million, will include landscaped garden areas, a centralised courtyard, podium parking facilities, an in-situ concierge and secure cycle storage. Scholar’s Court is expected to complete by June 2025 and will create more than 250 jobs during construction. The development is the latest addition to the Sourced’s burgeoning property portfolio, with Derby Court on West Derby Road fully occupied and phase one of its flagship £100m Westminster Park project completed three months ahead of schedule. So as Liverpool hosts the Eurovision Song Contest on behalf of Ukraine and the city parties like never before, I’d like to invite you to grow a sunflower or two. This gesture would not only serve as a sign of our solidarity with Ukraine but without dampening the mood, a stark reminder that when the fun is over here, Ukraine will still be very much at war. Like poppies and cornflowers, sunflowers are flowers of the fields and are deeply rooted in Ukraine’s cultural heritage. Aside from their use as fashion accessories, sunflowers are a valuable part of the Ukrainian economy – the country is the world’s biggest exporter of sunflower oil. Thanks to its rich soil and long dry summers, sunflowers are grown in abundance everywhere and by everyone in Ukraine, with an estimated 6.5 million hectares of sunflower crops produced each year. Every part of the plant is used to its full capacity – the seeds have long been a popular nutritious snack whilst flour is made from grounding the seeds and of course, the oil is used in cooking and low-fat spreads. What you might not know, however, is that Ukraine produces vast quantities of sunflower honey and it’s thought to be the most popular kind of its type. After Russia’s full invasion last year, the number of sunflowers being planted in Ukraine dropped off dramatically – as did its production of honey – with many hives left unattended as beekeepers went off to fight.

n FIELDS OF GOLD The flag of Ukraine was officially re-adopted in January 1992 following the collapse of the Soviet Union. It bears two horizontal bands of blue and yellow representing Ukraine’s wide blue skies above and the yellow fields of wheat and sunflowers below. After the Chernobyl disaster in 1986, the Ukrainian people planted sunflowers in the areas affected by nuclear fallout. Not only did these flowers represent hope and a sign of renewal but amazingly, they removed radioactive elements from contaminated soil. Meanwhile, in early June 1996, defence ministers from Ukraine, Russia and the USA met at a missile base in southern Ukraine to celebrate Ukraine giving up its nuclear weapons. Silos gave way to sunflowers as symbolic seeds were planted during an emotional ceremony in front of the world’s media. Given its cultural and historical significance, it’s no wonder the Ukrainian people hold the sunflower so close to their hearts and it’s still not too late in the year to plant one of your very own. n GROWING SUNFLOWERS The sunflower is arguably one of the easiest flowers to grow, with its no-nonsense large seeds making planting mere child’s play. Sunflowers come in a range of different sizes from the Titan or American giant which can reach up to four metres tall, right down to smaller varieties like Big Smile and Tigers Eye which won’t climb any higher than 30-40 cm. Once you’ve picked your variety, start by sowing the seeds individually in small pots of multi-purpose compost – watering lightly and putting them on a sunny windowsill to start them off. Once they reach 4-5 cm you can place them into a larger pot. However, if you want to grow a real giant, you’ll need to plant them out. At this time of year, you can plant the seeds out directly – a sheltered sunny spot against a south-facing wall is ideal. As your sunflower grows taller you may need to support it with a stake or cane, tying it loosely to the plant stem with string. You don’t have to worry too much about watering your plant either as sunflowers can tolerate dry hot climates and once established usually thrive.

NORTH WEST CHARITIES HANDED HUGE BOOST BY FOOTBALL FOR CHANGE FUNDING Organisations awarded up to £10,000 to support vital work in communities across the region FOOTBALL FOR CHANGE, the social mobility initiative launched by Trent AlexanderArnold, Jamie Carragher and Conor Coady, has released more than £150,000 of grants in its first round of funding for 2023. 16 organisations – the majority based in the North West – have been allocated up to £10,000 each, including Everton in the Community, Liverpool FC Foundation, The Inclusive Hub and Dame Kelly Holmes Trust. Football For Change, which has raised more than £700,000 since launching in 2021, was founded by Alexander-Arnold, Carragher and Coady alongside business figureheads such as CEO of Ardonagh Retail, Ian Donaldson, and public relations leader, Daniel Hughes. The initiative aims to help NEET (not in education, employment or training) young people find education or employment opportunities, as well as others who face barriers to achieving their full potential. The Inclusive Hub, based in North Liverpool, will use its grant to offer apprenticeship and training opportunities to disadvantaged teenagers, while Talk the Talk
Education is utilising its funding to work with 60 groups of high-risk individuals, aged between 15-25, in a bid to develop learning and confidence. Jamie Carragher, co-chairman of Football For Change, says: “This is what Football For Change is all about. ROYAL LIVER BUILDING TOUR BECOMES ACCESSIBLE FOR ALL AHEAD OF JAM-PACKED SUMMER City centre attraction gearing up to welcome thousands of visitors throughout Eurovision and beyond RLB360 – LOCATED AT THE HISTORIC Royal Liver Building – has introduced multilingual audio tours and an induction loop system for Eurovision visitors and tourists this summer. Classed as the UK’s first skyscraper, the landmark was commissioned by Royal Liver Assurance in 1907 and took three years to build. The award-winning RLB360 tour allows visitors to enjoy the immersive audio-visual experience in the original clock mechanism room, which tells the recent history of Liverpool. The addition of the multilingual audio tours and induction loop system comes at an exciting time for RLB360, as Liverpool prepares to welcome thousands of tourists for the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest. Chris Devaney, operations manager at RLB360, says: “For so long,
