From the birth of Beatlemania to the release of their final film – May was often a momentous month for the world’s most famous group

I

n May 1962, The Beatles were in Hamburg when a telegram arrived from their manager with the message: ‘Have secured a contract for Beatles to record for EMI’. Or had he? Brian Epstein had met with record producer George Martin at EMI Studios to play him a tape of the band, but Martin wasn’t impressed. ‘If you want me to judge them on what you’re playing me, I’m sorry, I’ll have to turn you down’, he said. Feeling sorry for Epstein, who’d been shown the door by numerous record companies, Martin added: ‘If you want to bring them down from Liverpool, I’ll give them an hour in the studio.’

Such was Epstein’s excitement, he sent the same telegram to Bill Harry, editor of Liverpool entertainment magazine ‘Mersey Beat’, who published a front cover image of Pete Best with the headline ‘Beatles Record’.

In just 12 months, The Beatles became the biggest act in British pop music, with the first of their 17 number one singles, ‘From Me to You’, topping the charts in May 1963 for seven weeks, followed later that month by their first album, ‘Please Please Me’.

They began their third nationwide tour on 18 May 1963 at the Adelphi in Slough, supporting American recording artist Roy Orbison. When The Beatles appeared on stage, girls began to scream – completely drowning out the music. The Beatles would finish the tour as the lead act. Beatlemania had begun to sweep the country.

By May 1965, The Beatles had finished shooting their second feature film ‘Help’. During a break in production, they were

challenged to a relay race. Four six-man teams took part with The Beatles supported by road manager Neil Aspinall and chauffeur Alf Bicknell. To everyone’s surprise, the mop-tops were victorious – that extra burst of speed was necessary when escaping hysterical fans.

With the mania making it increasingly difficult to travel the world and touring coming to an end, out of necessity The Beatles pioneered the concept of the music video. In May 1966, they filmed a promotional film at Chiswick House for the single, ‘Paperback Writer’/‘Rain’. The A-side’s inspiration came about when Paul McCartney’s auntie asked: ‘Why do you always write songs about love?’. Seeing Ringo reading, McCartney announced he would write a song about a book. The single topped the charts in seven countries and became The Beatles’ first UK single that was not a love song.

In May 1969, The Beatles returned to the balcony at EMI House to recreate the iconic cover image from their 1963 debut album. The picture was to be used for their final album ‘Get Back’, but the image and album title were dropped. Released in May 1970, The Beatles final album, retitled ‘Let It Be’, raced to the top of the album charts. The Beatles’ final film ‘Let It Be’ followed two weeks later. The Beatles did not attend the launch and would not work together again as a group.

Back to the present and a Christmas card declaring ‘War is Over!’ and signed ‘with love to the Wilsons from the Lennons’, has gone on display in Liverpool. The card, unveiled

by Tony Bramwell at the Liverpool Beatles Museum, was sent by John and Yoko in 1969 to the then Prime Minister and MP for Huyton, Harold Wilson. Tony, a childhood friend of The Beatles and later CEO of Apple Records, helped John to launch the War is Over! campaign by sending out thousands of cards to people in The Beatles’ address book and organising the slogan to be placed on billboards across the world.

Languedoc

Jon Atkinson picks his four favourites from France’s largest privately-owned winery outside Champagne

LANGUEDOC-ROUSSILLON in South West France is the country’s largest wineproducing region – creating as much wine as the whole of Australia each year. It is a delightful part of the country that offers real diversity to any wine drinker. The majority of what is grown here is IGP (formerly known as Vin de Pays), which allows for a vast array of different grape varieties. There are, however, also several AOPs (previously called Appellation Contrôlée), France’s highest and

most stringent classification system for wines.

Arguably the most significant grower in the region is Domaines Paul Mas (DPM), which has been run by Jean-Claude Mas since he took the reins of the 40-hectare estate at Pézenas in 2000. Under his stewardship, DPM today incorporates some 850-hectares of vineyards spread across 12 individual estates throughout the Languedoc. He has also tied down an additional 1,500-hectares to individual growers under long-term

Côté Mas ‘Frisante’ Blanc de Blancs 2020 Côté Mas is Jean-Claude’s ‘in house’ Bistro at their Pézenas HQ – well worth a visit if you’re in the area.

It is also the name given to a range of ‘house wines’ served therein. Frisante, a play on the Italian frizzante, is a delicious, semi-sparkling blend of Chardonnay with the increasingly popular Picpoul, badged here in the local vernacular as Piquepoul.

This delightful fizz has the similar floral, fruity charms of prosecco with the edge of salinity you get with Picpoul de Pinet, whilst the Chardonnay brings fruity elegance to the mix. It is made using the Charmat method as per prosecco and has citrus aromas with apple & pear notes – an excellent aperitif and great with seafood. It is also surprisingly good even after the fizz has faded! £12.25

La Forge Estate IGP Pays d’Oc Marsanne 2020 La Forge Estate symbolises a fusion of the old and new worlds of wine and encompasses a broad range of modern, fruit-driven single varietal wines. Marsanne is a variety that also originally hails from the Rhône valley featuring in the white wines of famous appellations like Hermitage and Saint-Joseph. This is a fine example of this underrated variety showing subtle hints of marzipan and hazelnut on the nose with stone fruit character. A brief sojourn in oak enhances richness of texture which is akin to that of a good Chardonnay, but with a markedly different flavour profile incorporating honeydew melon and stonefruit. £10.95

contracts. Some 45 different grape varieties are planted throughout the Domaine, which coupled with Jean-Claude’s ‘New World’ styled winemaking philosophy, makes for a hugely impressive range of fruit-driven wines.

Something of a perfectionist, JC’s mantra is ‘La luxe rural’ or rural luxury which sums up his culture and philosophy: “With the greatest respect for our rural roots, we aim for perfection. Our wines are the result of our mission to inspire real emotions.”

Vignobles Paul Mas IGP Pays d’Oc Viognier 2020 Viognier is an increasingly popular variety that is grown in all manner of countries – it’s hard to believe that as recently as 1985 there were only 80 acres planted worldwide! The finest examples hail from France’s Northern Rhône valley in Condrieu and Ch. Grillet, but those will set you back a pretty penny. Fortunately, delightful examples like this allow you to ‘test the water’ without having to spend a fortune! This is a beautifully crafted example that is dry yet rich. As you would expect, there are exotic aromas of peach and quince with a deceptively dry but well-rounded palate and a long, mineral finish. £9.50

Ch. Paul Mas ‘Clos des Mûres’ Languedoc 2020 Paul Mas wines are the result of symbiotic harmony between an extraordinary region for producing wines, passion for the vineyard, respect for the grapes during vinification, and great blending and ageing knowledge. ‘Clos des Mûres’ is grown on the 80-hectare ‘Nicole’ vineyard and is a Syrah dominated blend with 10% Grenache and 5% Mourvèdre that is aged for nine months in a mix of French and American oak barriques. The nose is complex with aromas of black fruits and violets underpinned with cocoa and sweet spice. The palate is rich and full-bodied with flavours of blackberry, plum and black cherry with mineral notes, spicy black pepper with rounded tannins and juicy acidity – a serious and equally delicious red! £15.95

Radical Landscapes Review

GOING FOR A JAUNT INTO THE COUNTRYSIDE takes on new significance after seeing Radical Landscapes, Tate Liverpool’s latest major exhibition. As the title indicates, the show aims to shake up perceptions of what landscape art can be. It’s a big exhibition of over 150 works spread across the entire top floor of Tate’s dockside building, so you’ll need your walking shoes on to take it all in. In doing so, you’ll be emulating one of the exhibited artists, Richard Long, who has been using the act of walking as his artistic medium for decades. The landscape is his canvas.

From paintings of seemingly idyllic country scenes to rural raves and mass occupations, this show offers a powerful interpretation and visual account of Britain’s social and cultural history over the last century.

It’s a story of activism and political battles, wealth and poverty. Our relationship with land is shown in all its complexity and through the broad themes of trespass, land use and the climate emergency, it leaves no doubt as to how vital it is that we continue to protect what is

around us. Assistant Curator, Laura Bruni: “I hope people who see the exhibition will think more about the outdoors and how we must look after the landscape, especially who has access to it. This exhibition is so rich and inclusive that hopefully everyone will get something from it”.

Bruni and her colleagues were working on Radical Landscapes through two of the most significant events of the past decade – Brexit and the Covid pandemic. She explains that both of these events, ironically, heightened the relevance of the show’s content. The former for the debates it triggered around land and borders, and the latter for how access to outdoor space became of vital importance to us all.

This is a show tackling serious issues but it does so with playful as well as political artworks, sometimes both at the same time. Greeting visitors almost as soon as they walk in is Jeremy Deller’s huge green neon version of Cerne Abbas, the ancient giant chalk man carved into a Dorset hillside. The symbolism of the original is still uncertain and Deller’s is definitely open to interpretation, especially with his gigantic acid house smileys made of straw sitting alongside it.

Some of the pieces on display, such as protest banners, were never originally conceived as works of art. But shown here, they take on a dignity that was largely denied them at the time and they can now be seen as being of historical importance. One such is the 1980’s Greenham Common textile collage used in the women’s peace camp against NATO’s decision to store American cruise missiles at the Berkshire site.

The traditional British landscape artists, Constable and Gainsborough, feature in this show but in the context of how times have changed. Constable’s Haywain, for example, is Peter Kennard’s subversive photomontage of the painting, showing three nuclear warheads inserted into the wagon, another protest at the siting of cruise missiles in the English countryside.

Nearby, a video clip of the late John Berger critiquing a Gainsborough painting is the only representation of the artist’s most famous double portrait, c1740 of Mr & Mrs Andrews on their

vast estate. Berger describes it as an elitist example of private land ownership and exclusion, at a time when the punishment for stealing a potato was a public whipping and poaching resulted in deportation.

In such an immersive exhibition it is sometimes the quiet, small artworks that leave the most lasting impression. There were two of these for me. One was Rose English’s Bed in a Field, a set of black and white photographs showing the artist and her boyfriend asleep in a tilled field, the earth beneath and over them, their heads on white pillows, looking like it was not only a normal place to sleep but also the most perfect for the lovers. The other was Derek Jarman’s Archaeology of Soul, a conjoining of flint fragments he has gathered from the fields near Avebury Henge with string and a lead pendulum to make what resembles an ancient clock of sorts.

A special highlight of the exhibition is what comes right at the end – Ruth Ewan’s Back to the Fields. Here are living things from the landscape, including a small lemon tree in fruit. The installation required Tate to build within the gallery what is in effect a huge greenhouse, an environment in which plants could thrive but which would not affect other artworks elsewhere. The piece is a physical representation of the French Republican Calendar, which was in use for only 12 years from 1793. It was a political reconnecting of an entire population back to the land, one that briefly replaced the Gregorian calendar, renaming all the seasons in collaboration with artists, poets and horticulturalists to reflect nature and agriculture.

The calendar lists an item for every one of its 360 days and Tate has procured and arranged them all – with the exception of live animals such as a horse and a donkey. Caught drink or drug driving – consult the legal experts

Emma Smith, director from Paul Crowley & Co solicitors’ crime department, explains the legal process of being charged with a drink or drug driving offence and what a conviction could mean for you In England and Wales alone, over 85,000 people are charged with drink driving offences every year and the risk of a fatal injury is twice as likely when the driver is under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Drink and drug driving can not only cause serious accidents, but also lead to a driving ban, a fine and even a custodial sentence.

What is the drink driving limit?

The drink driving limit in England and Wales is 35 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath or 80 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood.

However, the level of alcohol in your blood can be affected not just by how much you drink, but a range of other factors, such as your age, weight, and diet. Therefore, it’s impossible to know whether you would be considered over the legal limit after drinking, so you should avoid driving altogether if you’re planning on drinking alcohol.

What are the limits on drug driving?

The drug driving limit depends on which drug has been taken, but if you are found with drugs in your system you won’t be charged if it is an amount below the legal limit.

Here is the limit for some common drugs in micrograms per litre of blood: • Cocaine: 10 µg/L • Cannabis/Delta-9tetrahydrocannabinol: 2 µg/L • Ketamine: 20 µg/L • Heroin/diacetylmorphine: 5 µg/L • Clonazepam: 50 µg/L • Diazepam: 550 µg/L • Methadone: 500 µg/L • Morphine: 80 µg/L • Amphetamine: 250 µg/L

What happens if you are caught drink or drug driving?

If the police have a reasonable suspicion that you might be driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, they have the power to ask you to pull over and take a breathalyser or drugs test. If you refuse to provide a specimen for testing (unless you have a reasonable excuse), you could be arrested. If you are found to be over the legal limit you will be taken to the station and re-tested. If you fail the second test, you will be charged with an offence.

However, if you’ve been charged with drink driving you may be able to reduce your driving ban (usually by a quarter) by completing a drink driving rehabilitation course.

When you walk through the doors of Castle Street’s BoBo, you enter a world where Spanish and Portuguese cultures mix; a perfect combination of food and aesthetics.

You’re greeted with exposed brick creating a rustic ambience, welcoming booths for a cosy catch-up and tasteful artwork. The simple colour scheme is really effective in transporting you to another place; the deep green tiles throughout connect you with the pastoral, the low-hanging lights provide the warmth of a foreign sun and the black and white decorative tiles give a cool splash of personality. An eclectic playlist compliments the menu whilst the eye-catching wine cellar located at the back of the restaurant entices you to have another drink.

My guest and I were greeted by Kerry for our 1 pm reservation on a sunny Saturday and escorted to a cosy booth tucked at the back of the bar. We had booked a 90-minute bottomless brunch, a signature BoBo package

which costs £30. The brunches run between 12-3pm on weekends and are high in demand... I now know why! Kerry gracefully explained that we had unlimited drink choices (prosecco, sangria, caipirinhas or beer) before being served a charcuterie board selection and dessert. My guest ordered a prosecco whilst I opted for a Caipirinha, a refreshingly zingy drink with flavours of lime and passionfruit.

Shortly after, our charcuterie board was served with a delectable array of Bocadillo sandwiches, serrano ham and alioli bites, olives, crackers with various meats and cheeses. My personal favourite was the Monte Enebro – a creamy, textured cheese that when paired with some chorizo and crackers made for brunching heaven! The board offers something for everyone including kikones (a typical Spanish bar snack) and potato tortillas, which have the texture of clouds, and you get to wash it all down with your unlimited drink!

Before dessert arrived, I took the chance to delve into the history of BoBo and find out how it all began. Kerry explained that ‘BoBo’ is Spanish slang for ‘fool’ and the name of the bar is inspired by the notion to have fun and not taking yourself too seriously.

It certainly is the perfect place to have fun!

During my visit there was a hen party sat at the long table making good use of the built-in iceboxes to keep their prosecco chilled and easily accessible.

Our desserts included churros with chocolate sauce and pastel de natas – similar to a custard tart. This Portuguese pastry melts in the mouth, giving a true taste of the Iberian coast. There are plenty of drinks on the standard menu, so after your brunch is finished you can continue the merriment with a ‘Queen Rosada’ or an ‘Iberian Punch’ – a perfectly palatable collection of cocktails.

Whether you’re after a boozy brunch, a quaint catch-up, or an Iberian holiday in the heart of Liverpool, BoBo is the place to go.

Diversification in investment: not putting all your eggs in one financial basket The saying goes don’t put all your eggs in one basket. In the same way, we believe it is important that your investments aren’t concentrated in one area but are instead spread over a range of assets within the investment universe. This is why diversification is one of our core investment beliefs

ost investors will be aware that investing in a range of assets across industries and geographies is considered a sensible idea.

This can help reduce the negative impact of changing market conditions, without necessarily hurting long term returns.

A recent example of this has been the wildly fluctuating cost of fuel and other commodities. This has driven up the value of oil and gas companies, which lagged in 2020 and the first half of 2021. This is in direct comparison with several companies which had been performing well and have now begun to struggle. A diverse range of investments will have had a smoother performance over this period compared to those concentrated in one sector.

Variety of risks

While diversifying stock selection can offer some mitigation against risks, there will still be systemic or market-wide risks that could have negative implications.

These include inflation, rising interest rates, or political instability – all three of which we are seeing in 2022.

Therefore, we also look to diversify across all asset classes, as bonds, equities, property, and alternative investments will react differently to the same market conditions. Asset allocation is another of our core Investment Beliefs, and by spreading investments across different asset classes, we can mitigate against a variety of risks.

While it is important to acknowledge that diversifying cannot eliminate risk, by combining asset classes that don’t move in perfect sync with each other, diversification should lead to reduced volatility and smoother returns.

Putting the belief into practice

We typically look to diversify your money at three levels: stock selection, the mix of fund managers and how St. James’s Place combines these funds into Portfolios.

Fund manager selection is key in ensuring diversification, and a lot of time and effort goes into making sure St. James’s Place only work with managers who have a demonstrable edge in this regard.

St. James’s Place also look at how different fund managers work together in a multi-manager fund. A recent example of this was in 2021 when they merged their Alternative Assets, UK Absolute Return and Multi-Asset funds into its new Global Absolute Return fund. Part of the logic for the merger was that none of the original funds were diversified enough in their own right.

In creating this new fund, St. James’s Place removed some fund managers,

rebalanced others, and added new fund managers. For the fund managers that were removed, or whose holding was reduced, it was not necessarily just related to performance. Rebalancing was also done to ensure the fund was sufficiently diversified.

Thus, when you diversify your investments, you reduce the amount of risk you’re exposed to in order to maximise your returns.

BOOTLE MUSIC FESTIVAL BACK FOR 2022 Glenn Tilbrook & The Christians set to headline fantastic weekend of music, food and family fun THE BOOTLE MUSIC FESTIVAL is returning to The Lock & Quay community pub and gardens this summer (17-18 June).

A celebration of all that is great about Bootle, the event is run by social enterprise SAFE Regeneration – with any profits from the weekend reinvested in the local community.

The festival gets underway on Friday 17 June with a chilled acoustic line-up headlined

by Glenn Tillbrook – one half of the award-winning Squeeze songwriting team of Difford/Tilbrook.

Glenn passionately supports the work of the Trussell Trust and encourages everyone to bring something for the food bank stations he has set up everywhere he plays.

Before Glenn takes to the stage, festivalgoers will be treated to sets from guitarist and songwriter Nick Harper, exciting young live performer Leon Tilbrook and veteran composer Brian Dawe.

Onto Saturday and its local legends The Christians who top the bill – led by founder member Gary Christian, he’s joined by multi-talented Joey Ankrah on lead guitar/ vocals, Neil Griffiths on acoustic guitar/vocals and Mike Triggs on keyboard.

The wonderfully named Xander & the Peace Pirates will also perform on the second day of the festival. Formerly the resident band at the Cavern Club, their unique sound combines soul, blues and rock influences.

Many more artists are still to be announced, alongside music workshops, a real ale tent with a large selection of cask ales and a special community chill zone.

Coram Beanstalk is a charity training volunteers to go into partner schools and support children with a love of reading. This is Alfie’s story ALFIE WAS VERY QUIET, WITHDRAWN and not interested... Our first session was quiet, he spoke only when I spoke to him, he didn’t engage and he looked sad. I approached the time with him, quietly, by explaining why I was there and asking if he was okay sitting with me and looking at the books?

Yes, but he didn’t want to read. Our first few sessions were spent looking at books, allowing him to choose whichever book he wanted. Gradually, he became engaged and interested during our twice weekly meetings. This was January. Before our third session had finished he told me why he didn’t look at books... he was beginning to trust me. I encouraged him to choose books, no pressure, and here we are now. He is a different child. He eagerly awaits our time together and he is so chatty, has a fantastic imagination and even talked about writing a book from his idea of ‘Living on a cloud’. We have had wonderful conversations full of ideas, suggestions, and imagination. He has come alive and whilst he can read well, he now knows how to articulate what it is he wants to say. Best of all, he looks at the books and he starts the book buzz! To see a child so engaged and brimming with ideas from such a quiet start is just amazing. I love being a Coram Beanstalk helper!

All profits generated from food and drink sales will be given back to the Merseyside recovery community THE UK’S FIRST DRY BAR AND CAFÉ The Brink has reopened its doors in the heart of Liverpool two years after having to close.

The Parr Street venue made the difficult decision to stop operating the café once lockdown restrictions were lifted back in 2020, due to the considerable financial impact of the pandemic.

Now in the hands of national charity The Forward Trust and with a brand-new look, the space will serve an array of non-alcoholic beverages, as well as locally sourced fresh food in its popular menu once again, opening each day between 10am and 3pm, with the hope that it will be able to host its renowned calendar of events and activities in the near future.

Lucy McLachlan, general Manager at The Brink, says: “The Brink is back, and we’re excited to welcome people from all walks of life through our doors once again.

“As a dry bar, our aim is to steer the focus away from alcohol by promoting a healthier lifestyle and to invite the recovery community, students, families, and the general public alike to return to our thriving social hub.”

Established in 2011, the venue is staffed by people who have themselves struggled with alcohol or addiction in the past, presenting them with an opportunity to re-enter the workforce and give something back.

Clippers Barber & Coffee Co Meet Greg Burnett, a Liverpool hairdresser whose lockdown love for coffee has seen him transform his Booker Avenue barbershop How did you first get into hairdressing?

As soon as I left school I started my hairdressing apprenticeship, which lasted three years, then I went straight into barbering in 2006. I opened my first barbershop in 2008 at the age of 21 on County Road, Walton. With the money from the sale of my first shop, I launched a second store in Maghull in 2015.

How did you come up with the idea to combine a barbers and a coffee shop under one roof? It started as a lockdown project. My wife (Helen) and I invested in a coffee machine and we started really getting into coffee. I know it sounds cliché, as it seems to be everyone’s dream to open a coffeeshop, but it really was ours!

After realising opening a café during lockdown may be a silly idea, I decided to utilise the space I already had

in my barbershop on Booker Avenue and combine the two. We toyed with the idea for approximately a year, then decided to take the plunge in January and get the ball rolling for a March launch.

How have you found the experience of opening a new business, especially as we are still facing the impact of the pandemic? This store was opened in January 2020 just as a barbershop, then as everyone knows, the pandemic kicked in and lockdown started end of March, so we were closed down after just eight weeks.

2020 until now has been really difficult, but I feel we’re in a really good place at the minute, with the team we currently have. It’s been amazing to have the continued support from family and friends to keep us going.

What has been the response like from the local community since

you opened in March? The response has been really good. The focus was on making sure the coffee was really good, and luckily for us, there’s not much choice for coffee along Booker Avenue, with the nearest options being Allerton Road or Lark Lane.

What food and drink options are available in the shop? We serve all different types of coffee; from espresso, lattes and cappuccinos, luxury hot chocolates, iced coffees, iced chocolate drinks and a few niche options including flavoured long macchiatos and an affogato. Our baristas are currently working on some summer drinks, including iced teas and coolers.

Our food options are all freshly baked and supplied by South Liverpool-based companies. These include cruffins, croissants and pains au chocolat from The Butterholic; brownies and blondies fromVeeVee’s Bakery; and lemon drizzle cakes from The Blakery.

Stars unite to tackle prejudice THE LIVERPOOL AGAINST RACISM (LAR) programme kicked off with an impressive one-day (24 April) music showcase which took over venues in the Baltic Triangle area of the city.

Camp & Furnace, District and 24 Kitchen Street played host to some incredible Liverpool acts including Rebecca Ferguson, The Christians, The Farm and John Power.

LAR is a new festival which saw musicians, actors, athletes, historians, media personalities, politicians and activists unite for a week-long (23-30 April) series of impactful, thought-provoking, entertaining and creative events.

Blossom!

Heather Marsh encourages us to follow in the footsteps of the Japanese and go blossom watching this May

WHO CAN IGNORE THE AWESOME SIGHT that is springtime blossom, it’s simply breathtaking. The darling buds of May, as Shakespeare put it, are for me what this month is all about. I often think that this time of year is when my garden looks at its absolute pinnacle of loveliness. It never fails to amaze me how so many trees that you wouldn’t normally give a second glance, are suddenly smothered in a profusion of delicately petalled flowers and transformed into stunning beauties.

It’s no wonder then, that the time-honoured tradition of Hanami is so enthusiastically practiced in Japan. Hanami literally means ‘viewing flowers’ and generally refers to the spectacle of the blossoming cherry trees. For centuries now, the Japanese have been gathering to see this wonderous sight and pay homage to this beautiful feat of nature.

Between March and mid-May, millions of Sakura (Cherry blossom trees) flaunt themselves all over Japan. Hanami is all about celebrating and appreciating the blossom. To mark the occasion, families and friends prepare picnics and flock to parks to party under the laden boughs. This is a lovely practice which we could easily adopt ourselves here in the UK. Along city streets, in parks, and in gardens everywhere, there are trees putting on head-turning shows. These specimens are a match for anything in Japan, it’s only we don’t give them the same appreciation they so deserve. Maybe that’s why the National Trust is this year encouraging us all to follow in the footsteps of the Japanese and go blossom watching too.

Celebrating Hanami is something that I feel could definitely catch on in this fun-loving city of ours. There are plenty of Liverpool locations which would be ideal for this pastime – local parks being the obvious

choice. Both Sefton and Calderstones are well stocked with stunning blossoming examples. If you do fancy the idea, it makes sense to scout out your location beforehand – just to be sure of getting the best spec.

Once you’ve sourced your flowering tree spot, organise the gathering and invite friends and family to join you. Guests can simply stroll amongst the spring blossom or just sit and relax beneath the cascading blooms. When that soft breeze blows, showering you in petal confetti, you’ll be in seventh heaven, and know exactly why the Japanese love this custom so much.

If like me, you have trees blossoming in your own garden right now, why not host your own Hanami in honour of them. If you haven’t a flowering cherry tree or indeed anything in blossom, then why not plant one. There’s a flowering tree to suit everyone’s requirements, and

with so many varieties of cherry, both ornamental and fruiting, upright or spreading, weeping and dwarf, it’s just really a matter of deciding what to pick. It doesn’t even have to be a cherry tree, there are lots of species of blossoming trees to choose from, many with the added bonus of being fruit bearing too. Here are some of my favourites to consider: n Probably the most popular and recognisable ornamental flowering cherry tree of them all, Prunus serrulata Kanzan. With its double flowers of vibrant pink, the Kanzan is spectacular in bloom. It does need plenty of room, but this prima donna deserves it. n Prunus ‘Taihaku’ This ancient species, also known as the Great White or Hill Cherry, bears large white single flowers and grows to about 6x5 metres in 20 years. These are planted down the middle of Mather Avenue in South Liverpool and are breathtaking in bloom. n Prunus ‘Kiku-shidare-zakura’ Also known as Japanese Cheal’s Weeping cherry, this little variety is ideal for small gardens with arching cascading branches and candy pink double blooms. It grows to about 15ft and is ideally suited to pots or containers. n Prunus ‘Amanogawa’ A beautiful ornamental tree with an upright or columnar growth habit – the flagpole cherry is ideal for flanking a gate in a front garden. n Prunus cerasus ‘Morello’ This beauty has frothy white blossom in early spring, followed by the most gorgeous glossy cherries. It’s self-fertile and once established bears heavy crops. A lovely addition to any garden. n Malus floribunda The Japanese Flowering Crab Apple must take first prize for me. A stunning little beauty, its blossom is made up of blush-coloured flowers Cherry tree in that emerge from deep pink buds. If that’s not Aigburth Vale enough, the tree also bears tiny tart apples that make the most perfect jellies and chutney.

Blossoms of all kinds have a small window when this fleeting spectacle is at its best, so make sure you get out and make the most of it while you can. Cherry blossom has long been classic subject matter in Japanese art and the Japanese concept of Mono no aware emphasises the wistful realisation that nothing lasts forever. On that note, I do hope you get to see some of these beautiful sights and like the Japanese, give them a small bow or respectful nod. I’m sure you’ll agree they’re worth it.

IN THE PINK No Hanami party is complete without a picnic. Rose and blush wines fit the bill perfectly, as does pink champagne and gin.

For tasty treats, you could go for prawns and salmon sandwiches followed by pink marshmallows and maybe my cherry cheesecake (see right) decorated with delicately fragrant apple blossom.

INGREDIENTS 250g ginger nut biscuits 100g melted butter 600g soft cheese 100g icing sugar 280ml double whipping cream 420g black cherries frozen, or canned or bottled Cherry liqueur, optional Blossom petals

METHOD 1. Butter and line a 23cm loose bottomed tin with baking parchment.

2. Put the biscuits in a plastic bag and crush with a rolling pin or blitz in a food processor.

3. Transfer to a bowl and pour over the melted butter. Mix well and tip into the prepared tin, pressing the mixture down evenly. Chill in the fridge until firm.

4. To make the filling, beat the soft cheese, icing sugar and double cream together with an electric mixer, then simply spoon the mixture onto the biscuit base. Put in the fridge to set for about three hours – overnight if you can.

5. Remove the cake carefully from the tin and place on a serving plate or cake stand.

6. Carefully heap the cherries on the top, drizzle the cherry liqueur over and scatter the blossom petals.

What is your ultimate business goal?

M-Tech aims to continue its growth with larger apprenticeship schemes, new commercial contracts and a dedicated maintenance department. We will continue to work hard to become everyone’s number one choice.

We also hope to have a fully electric fleet of vans by 2025, providing a positive environmental impact. With the qualities we pride ourselves on, it is important that we do our part for the environment by investing in these electric vehicles.

What is the most valuable lesson you’ve learned in business?

Value your team and always listen to their ideas on how to improve – you never know where the best ideas will come from. Also, it is vital to deliver more than the customer expects, leaving a lasting positive impression, and a desire to return. A repeat customer is the best and easiest advertising as it is proof that the business is reliable and is worth trusting.

My ethos and belief is, you get out what you put in. If you work hard and put in the effort to provide excellent service and make sure the team knows their worth, you will reap the rewards.

Where does most of your business come from?

The majority of our work is North West

based, although we do have some corporate clients spread across the country. We began 13 years ago, only offering domestic electrical installation services in the local area, but we have expanded a lot since then. We predominantly service the needs and requirements of business owners, construction and development companies, landlords and domestic clients - offering services such as inspection and testing, full installation works and electrical design. We serve a wide variety of customers for a wide variety of needs. We even offer a service of installing electric car charging points in people’s homes.

What would you tell a 15-year-old James if you had a chance to go back in time?

Don’t dwell on the setbacks too much, these moments teach you, they don’t define you. Take every opportunity that presents itself to you, no matter how big or how daunting it might appear. Every mistake is an opportunity to learn.

What is your proudest achievement in life?

Becoming a dad is by far my greatest achievement, this gave me purpose and drive every single day. Nothing makes me prouder than being a father.

Alfresco Create an outdoor living space bursting with personality that you can really enjoy from sunrise to sunset

AS WE USHER IN THE NEW SEASON and the weather begins to tentatively get a little warmer, it’s time to consider venturing outdoors. Traditionally considered ‘leisure time’ areas, gardens and outside spaces, such as balconies and terraces, are now even more valuable assets, as they double as viable work-from-home locations.

So whether you’re outdoors to potter around and relax in the more traditional gardening sense, or to multi-task, soaking up some vitamin D while also sending an email (or three), there’s a strong argument for considering any outside area you have access to as another ‘room’ in your home. Which means that it’s worth investing in.

But how can you make this space feel more homely and comfortable? Even if you have the smallest of outdoor spaces – a Juliet balcony or a teeny tiny patio area – you can still aim to create a welcoming zone where you can take a breather throughout the day. A little chair perching in the doorway can be just as enjoyable and useful for soaking up the sun as an outdoor sofa, while a couple of chairs with a coffee table can be easily added to larger gardens and outside areas.

Think about the visual links to your home, too. “A balcony or terrace can usually be seen from inside, so consider the colours and materials you use and how the spaces flow,” suggests Wil Law, partner & home design stylist. “If you have dusky pink on your interior walls, add plaster pink chairs to your outdoor space to introduce visual harmony.”

FROM DAWN TILL DUSK One of the great bonuses of a balcony is that it can offer protection from the elements, making it a great spot for a morning coffee and, likewise, a late afternoon or early evening aperitivo – you can create a similar feel on a ground floor terrace with a shade or pergola. And when you’re close to the house, you’re near the wifi, too, so this can easily become a summer office, even if it’s only on a casual basis. In our post-pandemic, changed world, this is considered an acceptable way to work, generally speaking.

Compact bistro sets are a great choice for a small set-up, with the option of folding furniture where space is tight. Make it a place where you’ll want to be, cosying it up with home comforts such as cushions and planters, as well as favourite plants and eye-catching, scented climbers. Colour, scents, fresh air – this is all part of the allure of outdoor spaces.

And if you’re working with limited room, look out for a small, light side table. It can be moved near a doorway and will give you just enough space for a laptop or notepad to take up residence.

SECOND NATURE Convenience also plays a big part in creating a spot you’ll want to gravitate to. A table and chairs on the decking or patio outside the kitchen is an obvious win, as you’ll only have to carry bowls and plates a few extra steps.

For a family home, plump for sturdy furniture and choose bench seating, as this will allow guests to readily add themselves into the mix.

A classic all-in-one picnic bench table is practical for lunch, with plenty of room for entertaining in numbers from dawn until dusk. It’s the most convenient option for outdoor family dining and promises easy living for day-to-day use. There’s something effortless, charming and whimsical about a bench-table set-up, so even if you don’t need a family-friendly option, it might still be worth considering if you want a casual vibe – and for relaxed seating, you can’t go wrong with a modular sofa.

ALFRESCO DINING Relaxed seating next to a cooking station, such as barbecue, will become a favourite for serving up anything from a midweek supper

to a big lunch for family and friends at the weekend. Choose a spot with a bit of privacy and shelter (ah, the British weather!) and build an area where guests can really feel at home and comfortable, even if there’s a surprise rain shower.

Adding a dash of colour is a simple way to give an area character. A vibrant shade such as orange or terracotta contrasts perfectly with green planting during the day and injects a touch of warmth as night falls. Such colours are also known to have a positive psychological effect, keeping the chill at bay and encouraging social interaction and friendly conversation. Make this space snug and comfy by piling on the cushions and blankets, adjusting the lighting to make it just so and ensuring everyone is toasty from the warmth of a firepit.

If you’re working with limited space, select a smaller bistro-style table-and-chairs set. And if you don’t have an outdoor area? Go big on a picnic theme and pick out a beautiful throw, a riot of cushions and an assortment of chic pieces to take with you to the park or common.

Plastic cups and plates are fun, but if they aren’t quite your thing, you can always be a little bit more decadent and pack some proper glassware and jolly summer crockery (just remember to wrap them well so they don’t break en route).

Top tip: for a truly glorious picnic experience, consider an outdoor rug, which will bring a ‘magic carpet’-style picnic experience.

On a practical note, they’re also the perfect base for layering blankets and throws.

A PLACE TO RECHARGE When you think how versatile our homes have become, wouldn’t you want the same from your outdoor space, too? So set aside a spot for doing the things you love.

An outdoor cinema is a cinch to create with beanbags, a projector and a white wall. A solid, paved area could be the perfect place for morning squats and kettlebells, but if you prefer yoga, you’ll need a decked area, as the wood will have a bit more give for your supine poses. If neither of these sound like your idea of fun, then a comfortable seat can be a great spot for sitting and browsing through a magazine, or for taking a snooze behind the pages of a juicy novel.

If you’re looking for the ultimate in rest and relaxation, hello sunlounger (or a retro hanging chair). Whatever your preference for chilling and recharging, tailor your outdoor area to suit the way you like to live and bring a little more sunshine into your everyday.

REGENDA GROUP WINS PLANNING APPROVAL FOR GROVE STREET REGENERATION More than 300 new homes to form part of a ‘new green, diverse and multigenerational neighbourhood’ THE REGENDA GROUP has secured planning approval for its comprehensive redevelopment of the Grove Street estate on the edge of the city’s Georgian Quarter.

Regenda Homes currently manages 144 social rent properties on the site. These will be replaced with 304 high quality, affordable homes and two commercial units, with all 144 social rent properties replaced. All existing residents have the choice to move back to Grove Street, once new social rent homes are completed.

In addition to 144 social rent homes, other tenure types include homes for affordable rent,

private rent, outright sale and Rent to Buy. New homes will comprise one, two and three-bedroom apartments and three and five-bedroom houses. The development will also introduce new green space to the area, with extensive cycle storage throughout the scheme. Some blocks will have living roofs that will naturally insulate buildings, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and providing a habitat for insects and birds.

Martin Davies, director of development for The Regenda Group, says: “This development will bring beautiful new homes to the area close to Liverpool University, the Women’s Hospital and the Knowledge Quarter, and is a great example of placemaking, with a range of tenures to suit local need.”

Regenda anticipates that work will start over the summer, with the final phase completed by mid-2026.

RECOGNITION FOR WATERSIDE REDEVELOPMENT PC&CO SAFEGUARDING ACCESS TO JUSTICE The number of solicitors offering legal aid has fallen sharply following the pandemic PROPOSED REFORMS FOR CRIMINAL LEGAL AID announced in March by the Ministry of Justice will mean that over five million more people will be eligible for legal aid. The proposals will include increases in income thresholds and the cost of living, however, being eligible for legal aid does not guarantee access to it.

The pandemic has caused a significant decrease in legal aid applications for police station attendance and for representation in the Crown and Magistrates courts. With many criminal law firms forced to close, a concerning number of regions do not have access to a criminal defence solicitor.

There are now far fewer solicitors offering legal aid with the number of law firms holding a criminal legal aid contract in February 2022 falling by nearly 50% to just 1,062, compared with 2,010 in October 2007.

Emma Smith, director at Liverpool law firm Paul Crowley & Co, says: “In these challenging times, it is fundamental that we preserve access to justice for those without the means to provide for it themselves and to ensure that those who turn to the court for protection are provided with legal representation.

Tobacco Warehouse shortlisted for prestigious RICS Award HARCOURT DEVELOPMENTS’ Tobacco Warehouse scheme has been included on the shortlist for this year’s RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) Awards.

The £40 million first phase, which includes 188 apartments and 28,557 sq ft of ground-floor commercial space, is up against a raft of projects from across the UK in the Refurbishment/Revitalisation category including the recent renovation of India Buildings in Liverpool city centre.

The RICS Awards showcase “the most inspirational initiatives and developments” in land, real estate, construction and infrastructure – recognising “outstanding achievement, teamwork and companies”.

The regional winners for each category will be revealed via video announcement on LinkedIn throughout May. Dublin-based Harcourt Developments plans to deliver a total of 538 apartments and 100,000 sq ft of commercial space across three phases at Tobacco Warehouse.

Constructed in 1901 using 27 million bricks and 8,000 tonnes of steel, the Grade II-listed building sits opposite the Titanic Hotel at Stanley Dock.

The development is at the heart of the emerging Ten Streets district, designated to provide room for Liverpool’s thriving tech and arts sectors to grow.

ROYAL LIVER BUILDING 360 NOMINATED FOR PRESTIGIOUS NATIONAL AWARD Tourist attraction inside Liverpool’s most famous landmark up for top honour ROYAL LIVER BUILDING 360 (RLB360) will battle it out against tourist hotspots from across the country in a bid to be crowned best Small Visitor Attraction of the Year at the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence 2022.

RLB360 has been nominated alongside Liverpool’s British Music Experience and Weymouth’s Nothe Fort for the award, and the attraction’s operations manager, Chris Devaney, is hoping for yet more success following a win at the Liverpool City Region Tourism Awards earlier this year.

Chris says: “After retaining our Liverpool City Region Small Visitor Attraction of the Year crown in March, we are delighted to have been nominated for this VisitEngland award.

“Competition has been extremely strong, with more than 300 eligible attractions competing for the highest accolade in English tourism, so we really are honoured to be a part of the shortlist.”

RLB360, which cost more than £1 million to install, has welcomed more than 50,000 visitors from across the world since opening its doors in 2019.

At the attraction, people can explore the building, marvel at the history and

architecture on display and go behind the scenes to learn more about the famous Royal Liver Building clocks.

Visitors can also make their way up to the 15th floor, just like Batman did in the recent Hollywood movie, while getting up close and personal with the enormous Liver Birds,

affectionately named Bella and Bertie, and gazing over the city after viewing a digitally mapped audio visual experience in the clock tower.

This year’s VisitEngland Awards for Excellence will be held at the Library of Birmingham on 8 June.

PROPERTY INVESTMENT FIRM PREDICTS IT WILL BRING MORE THAN £1 BILLION TO LIVERPOOL BY 2027 RWinvest secures funding for major developments – including the new Parliament Square scheme in the Baltic Triangle A NATIONAL PROPERTY SALES AGENT which is headquartered in Liverpool is predicting that it will bring over £1 billion of investment to the city over the next five years.

Established in 2004, RWinvest is expanding its focus on Merseyside as it grows its sales partnership with Legacie Developments, which is investing heavily in residential and commercial building schemes in the city region.

RWinvest has already secured more than £300 million for Legacie, which has funded schemes including Liverpool’s 505-unit Parliament Square development and Merchant’s Wharf in Salford Quays. Now, RWinvest says it is on target to attract national and international investment of over £1bn by 2027.

Michael Gledhill, director at RWinvest, says: “RWinvest has built up a global reputation for bringing attractive opportunities in the North West to market and we have major plans to be leading on sales for

even more residential schemes over the next five years.
