ello and welcome to the latest edition of YM Liverpool magazine! As the first British astronaut to walk in space, our cover star this month really needs no introduction… but here’s one anyway! Former heli pilot Tim Peake captured the public’s imagination during his visit to the International Space Station in 2015/16, and he is now preparing to touch down at Liverpool’s Philharmonic Hall as part of his first UK tour this October. We sat down with Major Tim to find out more about his incredible journey, the future of space travel and what it’s like to run a marathon 200 miles above the Earth. From walking amongst the stars to dancing with them, our second interview this month is with TV’s most fab-u-lous judge, Mr Craig Revel Horwood. The Strictly star was on top form as he chatted about his latest musical which arrives at the Liverpool Empire this autumn and whether we can expect something special to mark his incredible 20 years on the BBC’s most-loved show. Tim Peake is a former Apache pilot, flight instructor, test pilot and current European Space Agency astronaut. In 2015, he became the first British astronaut to visit the International Space Station and conduct a spacewalk while orbiting Earth. Ahead of his first UK tour touching down at Liverpool’s Philharmonic Hall later this year, we caught up with Tim to discuss his incredible journey

You’ve journeyed into space – how has it been travelling the country with your tour? It’s been brilliant actually! We started in October 2021, so for a lot of people it was their first time getting out and about since lockdown, and then we did more dates in March 2022. We were pretty much sold out everywhere – which was fantastic. I’ve done lots of speaking since joining the European Space Agency (ESA), in schools and colleges and in corporate environments, but this was my first time doing something like this and it’s quite a different experience. This is a ‘show’, being on stage for 90 minutes and that means a lot of material… And it was packed with stuff. I had to get into a different mindset to give the audience a truly immersive experience of what it’s like to be in space. I was very conscious that people had taken the time and effort to come and see me for an evening. For some it might have been a special

birthday or Christmas gift. That was very humbling and an honour, so I wanted to give the audience a show to remember. Can you tell us a little bit about My Journey to Space and what audiences can expect? My Journey To Space embellishes on the stories in my book, Limitless. It takes you through how I got to be where I am, doing what I do, and what it takes to become an astronaut. I’ve enjoyed an incredible journey – from military test flying and combat mission to living in caves and training for days underwater. The show aims to answer all your questions about living and working in space. There’s a very beautiful section which takes the

audience on an orbit round earth, looking down on the planet and then a high-adrenaline insight into spacewalking. It’s the closest we can get to actually taking people into space. There are a lot of audio-visual elements to it, and the feedback so far has been brilliant. People say they learn a lot from coming along – whether they were already knowledgeable about space and my story or not, they’ve gotten new insights. Some of the best responses have been from the people who came along to accompany a friend or partner, and they’ve had a fantastic time. You don’t have to be into space to enjoy it, you don’t need any prior knowledge or anything, it’s just a great experience. It’s uplifting, motivational, inspiring and funny. From eight-year-olds to 80-yearolds, it’s very much accessible for all age groups.

to improve myself. I never stopped studying. As a test pilot, I realised I needed to raise my game academically and eventually got a degree in my early 30s. For me, hard work, endurance and perseverance were key – and because of that, I could grasp an opportunity when it arose.

The European Space Agency chose you from more than 8,000 applicants across Europe. How did that feel? Getting to the point of being invited to join the European Space Agency was an absolute rollercoaster of emotions. Just the very fact that we, as UK residents, could potentially join the ESA, the fact that we could even apply to the programme was something of great excitement to people like me. for us as we were preparing to leave the Army; we were all set to move to Yeovil for a civilian job as a test pilot – and all of a sudden, the plan changed and we were moving to Cologne. Sometimes you just have to grab an opportunity when you have the chance.

Then there were the small moments, like brushing your teeth before bed. The hygiene station was next to our large Cupola window, so you’d be doing this very normal daily activity, while looking down on the world passing by. There was always something new and different to see – and Earth is a beautiful planet from space. Having that moment of peace each night to reflect on what you’re doing and where you are was always special, as the space station is usually such a busy place.

What do you think is the future for space travel? The majority of the general public probably do not realise just how exciting the next few years are going to be for space exploration! We are so very close now to putting human beings on the Moon again. I was born in 1972, which is the year the last human walked on the Moon… Within the next five years we will see humans on the lunar surface once again. How did you prepare for the mission? The full training programme took place over four or five years – and even a year after being selected, going into space wasn’t a guarantee as the UK still wasn’t part of ESA’s human spaceflight programme. There was lots of politics going on behind the scenes. Once I was actually assigned to the mission and it was announced that I would be going to the International Space Station for six months as a British astronaut, the media attention began to ramp up. There was so much excitement from all quarters. The two years leading up to launch were a blur of activity. There was so much training, so much to learn: how to fly a spacecraft, do a spacewalk, dock cargo vehicles, deal with emergencies, maintain the space station and conduct all the science experiments. Then there’s medical training too and in any spare time, preparing the educational outreach projects. When it came to the final preparations, we were in Kazakhstan and they gave us 10 days – in quarantine – with not too much activity scheduled. I was allowed a socially distanced walk with my family, which was a very special moment to be able to say goodbye. But overall, it was nice at that point to just enjoy the experience in a kind of peace as it had been such a busy time. It was nice to take a breath, pause and have time to reflect.

From a seismic first meeting in Woolton to falling foul of the Philippines’ first lady – the month of July has featured some fascinating moments for our Fab Four down the years

t a humble garden fete on 6 July 1957, an encounter between two teenagers took place which was to change the course of music history and go on to influence fashion and culture across the world forever. For it was on this summer’s day at St. Peter’s Church in Woolton, that John Lennon (performing with his group The Quarrymen) was introduced to Paul McCartney for the very first time. Paul showed John how to tune his guitar and impressed him with a rendition of Eddie Cochran’s ‘Twenty Flight Rock’. Days later Paul joined John’s band and the rest as they say… Within 12 months of the fete, John, Paul and George Harrison would attend their first recording session at a home studio in Kensington, Liverpool. The Quarrymen recorded a McCartney/ Harrison composition, ‘In Spite of All the Danger’, with a solitary microphone hanging from the ceiling. The session was to produce one of the world’s most valuable records – a one-off, 10-inch acetate which is today valued at more than £140,000. Fast-forwarding six years, we arrive at an event which is widely considered as one of the landmarks in The Beatles’ rise to fame – the band’s homecoming on 10 July 1964 for the northern premiere of their first film, ‘A Hard Day’s Night’, at the Odeon Cinema. With the soundtrack to the film going straight to number one, thousands of fans brought the city to a standstill as they flocked to witness the Fab Four’s appearance on the balcony of Liverpool Town Hall. Just two years later in July 1966, The Beatles arrived exhausted in the

Philippines to play two shows in Manila to a combined audience of 80,000 fans. Imelda Marcos, the nation’s first lady, organised a lavish breakfast reception for the band – manager Brian Epstein declined the invite. While The Beatles slept, they discovered that the Marcos regime was not accustomed to being refused. As news of the alleged ‘no show’ was broadcast across the Marcos dominated radio and TV networks, the band’s security detail was withdrawn. At the airport, a hostile crowd jostled and spat at the group – with road manager Mal Evans beaten and kicked. Epstein and Evans were ordered off the plane and forced to pay £6,800 worth of Philippine notes as tax from the two shows, before being allowed back on the aircraft to fly out. The Beatles were in foreign climes once again 12 months later, when they travelled to Greece with the intention of buying an island on which to live and work. They were delayed from visiting their chosen island due to stormy weather and so spent the day sightseeing in the countryside. The taxi containing Paul and Beatles’ road manager Neil Aspinall caught fire and the pair were forced to walk back to a nearby village. Epstein’s personal assistant Alistair Taylor had arranged for £90,000 of special export dollars for the purchase of the island, but by the time they got clearance, The Beatles had forgotten about the island and the export dollars were sold for a profit of £11,400 when the exchange rates went up. Back on home soil in July 1969, John crashed his car into a roadside ditch while on a road trip up to Scotland with Yoko and their two children. The accident hospitalised the Beatle for five days, delaying his return to London for the start of the Abbey Road recordings. It was to be the last time John ever drove and the damaged Austin Maxi was transported to his Tittenhurst Park estate where it was put on display. On his way up to Scotland that July, John had stopped off at a relative’s home on Gateacre Park Drive. This sadly turned out to be John’s last visit to Liverpool and his final goodbye to the places which were so important to him growing up.

When you walk through the doors of new bar and eatery Nova Scotia at Mann Island, you’re entering a timeless place where maritime history meets the present day. At the end of the 19th Century, the Mann Island area was a shanty-town made up of dwellings and businesses serving the huge ships when the city boomed as a trade destination. The dock served Canada and the ‘lumber’ trade, twinning with Nova Scotia in Canada. There is even a Liverpool, Mann Island and River Mersey in the ‘original’ Nova Scotia in Canada! Liverpool’s Nova Scotia was gradually replaced as the docks developed and shipbuilding moved to Birkenhead, with the district largely forgotten… until now. Ma Pub Group’s latest venture occupies the former Mann Island Social/& Company dockside site and utilises an extensive openair drinking and dining space – as well as an interior restaurant and bar serving food and drinks.

For our afternoon visit, my guest and I were greeted by Sally and Emily, who showed us to a cosy booth overlooking the historic dockside. Our furry friend Indie was also joyfully received by the staff and fellow peckish pooches alike. Perhaps fittingly for a nautically-minded venue, the restaurant area was spacious, decked out with coloured tiles, muted wood and earthy tones. The menu boasts an impressive selection of breakfast, brunch and dinner options with many old favourites including Scouse and fish and chips alongside a wide range of small plates and sandwiches. My guest and I opted for dinner and after perusing the drinks menu, decided on a pair of cocktails – a classic Pornstar Martini and a Wapping Coconut – a refreshing coconut creation with agave and zesty hints of lime. If these two don’t float your boat, why not try a Berry Spritz or Mr Fraser’s Coal Yard? Onto the food and Emily recommended the ‘Titanic’ burger for my guest while I went for the chicken strips (£7) and salt & pepper chips (£5). The homemade beef patty, topped with BBQ pulled pork, was beautiful – as were the accompanying beer-battered onion rings. My chicken strips, served with a spicy side dip, were similarly delectable. We couldn’t finish fast enough! Suitably stuffed yet eager to try more, we checked out the small yet perfectly formed

dessert menu. I opted for Nova’s signature triple chocolate chunk brownie whilst my guest ordered the homemade sticky toffee pudding. Both were marvellously moreish, but it was the brownie, served warm with vanilla ice cream, which won out. Whether you’re looking for a quick drink with friends, a magnificent meal or a place with history embedded within its very walls, Nova Scotia is the place to be this summer! What care is available for the elderly?

Carers are often busy moving between commitments and, consequently, too many of them are left floundering on their own because they don’t know where to turn for confidential advice. You may not feel you have any spare time at all, but even ten minutes spent browsing the website of a reputable group can help you feel supported and informed about the wider issues around care. Good places to start include Age UK, the charity for older people, and Carers UK, which aims to improve life for carers.

Consider sitting down with a financial adviser

Financial advisers are perceived as being experts in tax and inheritance matters (and they are!), but much of their work also involves helping individuals and families find appropriate care, meet the cost of it and manage life’s big transitions. A good adviser will be able to answer your questions around care – including

how much home care costs per hour or whether next of kin are responsible for care-home fees. This can be reassuring and help families with forward planning.

Check entitlements

Many family carers have checked the financial status of their elderly relative with regards to their entitlement to help with care costs. Since most people who own a home or have some savings are required to self-fund their care, carers sometimes assume that they personally aren’t entitled to any financial support. This may not be the case – especially if it’s been some time since you checked, as

entitlement to some state benefits may begin after a period of time has elapsed or the parent’s needs have changed. Discussions of this nature need to take place early on and are worthy of a refresher after some time has passed.

Respite care

For some families, bringing in professional carers on a temporary basis may be an option, which will give unpaid carers a break.

WineTime’s Jon Atkinson muses on a surprisingly fascinating subject I’LL PUT MY CARDS ON THE TABLE – I’m pretty old school when it comes to wine, probably because I’ve been in the trade since I left school… a very long time ago! I love the idea that an individual or family can tend their vines, harvest them, make and bottle their wine and then sell it. For sure, a lot of terrific wine is still made this way, but such a small-scale approach alone cannot possibly satisfy the ever-increasing global demand for drinkable wine at everyday prices. Conglomerates, co-operatives, PLCs and the like all have their part to play in slaking the global thirst for wine. The fact I’m not a fan of supermarkets is no secret. However, theoretically, they are competition for the likes of us wine merchants (they do sell a lot of wine after all!). They also deserve credit; thanks to them, wine is no longer the preserve of the upper classes, it’s an everyday beverage to be enjoyed by absolutely anyone. They have also been innovative in re-introducing concepts such as shipping in bulk. I say re-introducing because this is not a new approach – less than a hundred years ago, wines were routinely shipped to the UK, and elsewhere, in cask. This method was particularly prevalent prior to the revolutionising of glass bottles in the second half of the 17th Century.

It never ceases to amaze me how opinions can change over time; once upon a time, screwcaps on wine were exclusively for the cheap and nasty – a misconception that is still held in some quarters. Similarly, some people have misgivings about wine that having been made in its country of origin, is then shipped in a large plastic flexitank and bottled here in the UK, or elsewhere in Europe. Initially, this was very much a cost-saving exercise as you can ship at least twice as much wine for the same cost as if it were shipped in the bottle. Today, the rather more pressing matter of carbon emissions makes bulk wine shipment a far more environmentally friendly means of importing. Given that the glass typically accounts for 40% of the weight of a bottle of wine, it’s far better to source that element locally as opposed to shipping it from the other side of the world. Shipping ready-bottled also entails a considerable amount of container space being given to ‘fresh’ air! Here at EWGA and WineTime, we are already shipping quite a few wines this way, and this year have dipped our toe into the ‘premium’ sector as well. The following are tried and trusted favourites that are bottled for us at Greencroft bottling in Northumbria – undoubtedly one of the most modern, efficient and environmentally responsible bottling plants in Europe.

La Bonita Mendoza Malbec 2021 Although originally a French variety, Malbec is now synonymous with Argentina, whose wines have been hugely popular in the States for a good while. La Bonita is our own-label Argentinean range, which is made for us by Viña Las Perdices, one of Argentina’s best, family-owned wineries. This is an attractive, fruit-forward example with soft, ripe tannins and a rich but juicy palate. Bramble and redcurrant aromas and flavours are also present, with a gentle hint of liquorice and subtle graphite notes on the finish. £7.50

Afrikan Ridge Western Cape Chenin Blanc 2021 One of my favourite white grape varieties and one that is unfortunately all too often overshadowed by Sauvignon. Chenin is one of the Loire Valley’s crown jewels, but it is also the most widely planted variety on the Cape. Afrikan Ridge is our own label South African range with four different varieties to choose from. This is typically fresh and zesty, with aromas of conference pears and honey on the nose, a softly rounded yet crisp palate, and stonefruit character with a gently honeyed finish. £6.75

Explorer’s Limestone Coast Shiraz 2019 As I mentioned earlier, shipping in flexitank has been pretty much exclusively the preserve of the budget end of the market, but our Explorers range will be looking to take things up-market. Our first foray is this splendid Aussie Shiraz, which is blended from parcels in Padthaway and Coonawarra, both on the Limestone Coast to the south of Adelaide. This is a wine of wonderful depth of flavour with plentiful spicy, dark fruit aromas enhanced by Eucalypt and spearmint notes with a well-balanced palate that is deceptively fresh. £10.95

South Island ‘Kiwi Style’ Western Cape Sauvignon Blanc 2021 South Island, as the name implies, started life as a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and all was going swimmingly until the well-chronicled 2021 harvest which was down by almost a third on normal levels. Our usual source just didn’t have the juice to supply us in bulk and seemingly nor did any number of other would-be growers that we tried. With supplies of Marlborough Sauvignon not available, we set about finding an alternative source for our South Island label and opted for South Africa. We are very pleased with the results and a lot of customers swear that they can’t tell the difference! It is, after all, a textbook Sauvignon; fresh, fruity and vibrant with tropical and citrus fruits balanced with a refreshing, zesty acidity. £8.95

Craig Revel Horwood, TV’s most fab-u-lous judge, sat down with YM as he prepares to bring Strictly Ballroom The Musical to Liverpool this autumn words olivia barkley-quinn

glitters You’ve just finished your debut solo tour ‘All Balls And Glitter’. What was the inspiration behind the show? I have wanted to do a one-man show for a while – something more than a slideshow. I wanted audiences to learn something true about me. So in the first act, I had a woman named ‘Lavish’ take the stage who played Craig’s best friend, liberally informing the audience of all the stories he wouldn’t want to tell. Then in the second act, I took the stage as myself, telling the story of how I got on Strictly Come Dancing. I’d never been on stage for two hours alone, so that was something new, and I played some duets with my good friend on the piano. There were 40 shows, and time flew by because it was just non-stop but really worth it. I think it gave the audience a chance to see me in a different light rather than the two-dimensional nasty judge they like to perceive me as. You’ve succeeded in most areas of the creative industry – theatre, dance, choreography and writing – is there a particular area you enjoy working in the most? Musical theatre is definitely my favourite area because it involves singing, dancing and acting – which is a real challenge. I’ve been fortunate to have done opera and ballet which are highly skilful areas but they’re one-trick ponies. Actor and musician shows like Sunset Boulevard are my favourite because the actors have to play five instruments each so it’s a challenge for me too. There is a huge demand on the actors involved, especially when compared to other productions where people will complain about having to do one thing like dancing. Away from television and theatre, you’ve written three autobiographies and one novel. Which one did you enjoy writing the most and which was the most difficult to finish? The first book I ever wrote was definitely the hardest because it was very personally revealing. I had just started on Strictly and the media were attempting to create wild stories so I produced that book to shut down the rumours. I enjoyed writing Dances and Dreams on Diamond Street the most because it is fictional and I could create fake stories as the press do! My aim was to try and convey what it was like for me trying to make a career in London. I was able to use real-life inspiration and situations but embellish the story with different names

and infuse some drama. It was a great way to stay creatively busy during lockdown, and with no other work coming in I had to find ways to make the time worthwhile. Strictly Ballroom The Musical, which you direct and cochoreograph, is heading out on a new UK and Ireland tour this autumn – landing in Liverpool in October. What can audiences expect from the show? We have singing, dancing and acting infused with the Spanish guitar and Flamenco – I’m really looking forward to getting that running. It’s a stark difference to Strictly on TV as there are dark, backstabbing characters who have ugly personalities. I’m delighted that the super talented Maisie Smith is joining Kevin Clifton on the tour as well. I can’t wait to see them dance together again. Expect some sexy moves, sizzling costumes and a simply sensational evening! Speaking of Strictly, is there a contestant from over the years who is particularly memorable? It has to be Jill Halfpenny – the first person I awarded a score of 10 to at the end of the second series. She always stayed in my mind because she set the bar for the future contestants. It’s your 20th anniversary of being on Strictly this year, congrats! Should we expect something special to mark the occasion? There will definitely be something special in the opening show, at least that’s what Jason Gilkison tells me! He’s our lead choreographer on Strictly and my co-choreographer for Strictly Ballroom, so he will likely concoct something spectacular for us judges. Finally, what’s next for Craig Revel Horwood? Another book in the works or another creative area you would like to conquer? I would love to take my solo tour to Scotland and also televise it to let people meet Lavish through the TV. I’d also like to direct a film as it’s one of the few things I haven’t tackled yet – that would be interesting. Strictly Ballroom The Musical visits the Liverpool Empire from 17-22 October. Maggie was part of a small team who established the business in 1996. This was a time when gender inequality within employment and enterprise in the region was an inherent and systemic problem. She made it her personal obligation to inspire, empower and enable

RECIPE of the month Hot dogs with pickled carrot and spicy mayo

PREPARATION TIME: 10 minutes COOKING TIME: 15 minutes Serves 4 INGREDIENTS • 2 tsp black sesame seeds (or a mixture of white and black) • 3 tbsp Cooks’ Ingredients Japanese Rice Vinegar • 1 tsp clear honey • ½ tsp toasted sesame oil • 300g carrots, scrubbed and julienned, shredded or grated • 4 Unearthed Bavarian Frankfurters

• 3 tbsp mayonnaise • 1 tbsp Cooks’ Ingredients Gochujang Chilli Paste • 4 hot dog rolls

This Korean chilli paste makes a wonderful rub for meats, and is delicious in vegetable stews or bakes. It’s very spicy though, so use sparingly.

METHOD 1P ut the sesame seeds in a dry frying pan and toast over a medium-high heat, stirring from time to time, until fragrant; tip out of the pan and set aside. Meanwhile, mix the vinegar, honey, sesame oil and a large pinch of salt in a bowl and add the carrot; cover and chill in the fridge, allowing the mixture to quick-pickle until ready to serve.

2H eat a griddle pan over a medium-high heat and cook the frankfurters for 7-8 minutes, turning regularly, until piping hot throughout. While they’re cooking, mix the mayonnaise and gochujang chilli paste in a small bowl; set aside.

3S plit open the rolls and spread a little of the spicy mayo inside each one. Lift the carrot from its pickling liquor and arrange in the rolls, then top with the frankfurters. Drizzle over the remaining spicy mayo and sprinkle over the sesame seeds to finish. Serve any leftover carrot on the side.

THESE DAYS, ONE OF LIFE’S greatest pleasures is going out into the garden with my little grandson and having a look around at what we can find. The times I’ve spent just letting him explore and discover all the simple delights the garden has to hold are second to none. Maybe it’s just picking daisies or spotting a cheeky robin looking for worms – I love it and he does too. Nothing highlights the natural beauty and wonders of my garden more than seeing it through the eyes of a child. Children observe and notice the simplest things in nature that we adults often take for granted. Getting children involved in gardening can begin at a very early age, and it isn’t just about showing them how to plant sunflower seeds. Fostering a basic understanding of gardening when children are still young can be hugely beneficial for their own wellbeing and development. Teaching our children how to appreciate and respect nature in their own backyards is surely one of the greatest gifts we can give them. As children learn so much through play, activities not only have to be engaging but fun too. Here are some ideas to help you along.

GROWING FRUIT AND VEGETABLES Starting with established plants, rather than seeds, will help to keep your young ones engaged when it comes to growing fruit and veg. Try tomato plants in pots or bags as they grow quickly and need plenty of watering. Getting the watering can out or even the hose pipe is when the fun really begins – be warned though, it won’t only be the plants that end up getting a good soaking! Spotting those tomatoes that are ripe and ready to be picked can keep kids actively involved. Encouraging them to taste the sweet and juicy produce at this stage shouldn’t be too difficult either. Potatoes are also ideal, with lots of digging involved and mud too if it’s a bit wet. Instead of planting your spuds in beds, it’s great fun to grow in them in old car tyres. Simply stack two or three tyres and then let the children help fill them with good potting compost. Putting a couple of seed potatoes in each stack will give you a decent crop. It’s also a great way of recycling otherwise redundant items and ideal if you are short on space. Why not also let the kids decorate them too! Cheap acrylic paints are just the job and will make the garden look even more colourful.

Alder Hey garden honoured at Chelsea Strawberries are a favourite for many children but are quite expensive to buy, so growing them yourself is a no-brainer. My son started out with just three plants a couple of years ago and by pinning down the runners the following year, doubled his plant numbers – ending up with a bumper crop. His two-year-old son thinks it’s wonderful and just can’t get enough of them, wandering out to eat his fill whenever he feels like it. Sensory activities in the garden are a lovely, relaxed way for children to learn. It’s a basic instinct for little ones to want to touch and interact with all that they see in the garden. Encourage them to smell the fragrance of flowers like the sweet scent of honeysuckle and jasmine, or the beautiful perfume of lavender. Naming the flowers as you wander around with toddlers is a great way of developing their language skills as well as their horticultural knowledge. My grandson loved repeating the names of spring flowers after me. Daffodils and tulips were easy for him but it took me a while to work out what ‘blue bens’ were… maybe you’ll hazard a guess? It’s herbs though which I think are probably the easiest group of plants for children to identify by just their smell and taste. I recommend introducing your budding gardeners to more common ones first like rosemary, mint and thyme. Parsley, sage and oregano are other good ones to try early on too. You can then move on to sampling the more distinctive smells and tastes of chives, basil, garlic and fennel. Garden wildlife in all its forms fills most small children with excitement and delight. Ladybirds and butterflies, birds and bees, squirrels and frogs – they are all out there waiting for some little person to discover them. There are lots of simple activities we can do to encourage and nurture our little gardener’s interest. Here are some to try: Get children to look for ladybirds and then show them how this tiny insect is one of the gardener’s best friends as it feeds on aphids and other pests that can ruin so many beautiful blooms. Here’s one to try just after it’s rained: arm your child with a small container which has a lid and get them to hunt and collect snails. Make sure they keep the lids on as snails are devious little creatures and will very quickly escape. Slugs can also be collected although they’re not that easy to pick up. You’ll find if you start children doing this at an early age they won’t be at all squeamish around molluscs. Collecting pinecones, acorns and conkers is a delight during early autumn and a good way of identifying the native trees which they come from. Sycamore seeds are great fun to throw and watch how they spin as well. If you’re out in the garden with children this summer, I hope you share with them the simple pleasures a green space can offer – come rain or come shine.

A garden designed for Alder Hey’s Children’s Charity to encourage children’s engagement with nature was awarded a prestigious Silver-Gilt medal at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The brainchild of brothers Hugh and Howard Miller, the Alder Hey Urban Foraging Station is infused with the magic of discovery inherent to foraging and at its core is the aspiration to inspire children to lead active, healthy, pleasurable lives. The garden features planting inspired by a number of habitats which were once commonplace including species-rich hedgerow, orchard meadow and bog/ ditch habitats. These are human-made habitats that are easily damaged through the loss of knowledge about how they should be maintained. Howard says: “We were really keen to work with Alder Hey to make a garden that celebrates the amazing work they do supporting children and their families. “We’re a family business, local to the hospital and many of our family and friends have benefitted from Alder Hey’s care; they’re a big part of our community.” I was delighted to learn that following its success at Chelsea, the garden is being relocated near to the entrance of Sunflower House at Alder Hey – a new building dedicated to children and young people’s mental health services.

Liverpool entrepreneur leading the fight against cladding crisis Adam Gallagher is co-founder & executive director at North West construction firm Intelligent FS

s a schoolboy playing football in the streets of Norris Green, Adam Gallagher never aspired “to be a Richard Branson”. However, the 42-year-old is now the executive director of Intelligent FS, a construction company which has roughly £30 million worth of contracts to remove and replace cladding deemed unsafe after a fire engulfed the 24-storey Grenfell Tower, killing 72 people, in 2017. Despite being first aware of the fire hazard posed by the polyethylene-cored cladding used on Grenfell in 2002, the government only banned such aluminium composite cladding (ACM) on buildings over 18 metres tall in the fire’s aftermath. The Grenfell Inquiry discovered 486 high-rise buildings which contained ACM cladding, and despite government plans to remove all problem cladding by June 2020, there are still 58 of these buildings left five years later. On 1 June 2022, the government extended the ban to all new buildings of any height. Now a dad of four, Adam never expected he would be making homes safe when he started out as an office junior, aged 16. He says: “You want to be independent, you want to have your own money, you want to do well for yourself. At that point in time, I think I was earning £30 a week and giving my mum £20 a week, so I’d have a tenner, but I’d make that tenner last. It gave me a good grounding to know that, if you want more in life, you’re going to have to work harder and bring value to people.” Adam worked full-time while training as an accountant and studying for an MBA at Manchester Business School before joining Taylor Woodrow Construction, where he managed millions of pounds worth of facilities management contracts. In 2015, he co-founded Intelligent FS with his former boss, Rob Williams. The core of the firm’s business – construction and renovations at courts – dried up during the pandemic, so the pair looked for alternatives to keep the company afloat. In the crisis of unsafe cladding, Adam found a problem that needed solving, and he felt Intelligent FS had the workforce and relationships with suppliers to fix it “cheaper and more effectively”, so they launched a dedicated cladding and facades division and bid for tenders, including for buildings in Liverpool. Adam adds: “The cladding needed to be done.

Whether there was Covid or not, people’s homes needed to be made safe. We knew there’d be buildings that needed to be addressed. What we didn’t know was the volume of buildings. There seems to be a hell of a lot of buildings affected.” In April 2022, the then Secretary of State for Levelling Up Michael Gove, announced more than £5 billion to remove and replace dangerous cladding on all buildings over 11m tall, with a minimum of £2bn contributed by 35 of the UK’s biggest housing developers. With this news and Adam’s expectation this kind of work could last another five years, Intelligent FS wants to expand its business. The entrepreneur adds: “We believe we have a moral duty to ensure all residents who live in tall buildings can go to sleep at night safe in the knowledge that, in the event of a fire breaking out, their home is fitted with fireproof cladding. “With a large number of buildings still featuring unsafe facades, we want to work with the government and developers to help ease the burden. That’s why we are expanding our operations five-fold to gear up for this necessary work.” Despite managing millions of pounds worth of contracts and travelling around the country, Adam tries to stay rooted in the community. Intelligent FS donates to a foodbank, and sponsors local football teams and six young MMA fighters in Liverpool and Manchester.

LIVERPOOL WATERSPORTS CENTRE ENJOYS BUMPER START TO SUMMER AS NEW AQUA PARK DELIGHTS Adventure attraction at Queens Dock boasts an exhilarating catapult swing and water trampolines A NEW AQUA PARK has been delighting adults and children alike since it was officially opened by Liverpool FC legend Jamie Carragher and world champion boxer Natasha Jonas this May. The £32,000 inflatable adventure attraction, located at Liverpool Watersports Centre in Queens Dock, is managed by Local Solutions – a major charity which also runs the centre in an effort to make the city’s stunning waterfront accessible to all. The aqua park boasts 12 pieces of equipment, including a catapult swing, water trampolines, slides, monkey bars and a spinning rocket plus a see-saw and various climbing apparatus. Open throughout the summer months, money from ticket sales will be invested back into Local Solutions in order for its charitable work across the Liverpool City Region and North Wales to continue. FUNDING PACKAGE SECURED FOR NEW NORTH LIVERPOOL APARTMENT SCHEME City Residence Apartments will comprise 78 contemporary one and two-bedroom units across four blocks NEXUS RESIDENTIAL AND LEGACIE DEVELOPMENTS have secured a £10 million funding boost for a new North Liverpool housing scheme. The joint venture between the two Liverpool-based property firms will see a modern apartment development constructed on Lemon Street. City Residence Apartments will comprise 78 contemporary one and two-bedroom units across four newly-built blocks. The upper floor apartments will boast impressive views of Liverpool’s world-famous waterfront and overlook the site of Everton FC’s forthcoming Bramley Moore Dock stadium. The development is expected to be completed by October this year. Institutional lender Together, which has worked with Nexus and Legacie on other development projects, has delivered the multimillion-pound funding facility. Meanwhile, the scheme is being promoted by international sales agent, RWinvest, which has successfully pre-sold the new homes off-plan. John Morley, CEO of Legacie Developments, says: “This is an exciting partnership with Nexus Residential and we are delighted to be working with Together again. Their investment will help us bring new
