First up this month we bring you my interview with celebrity chef Gino D’Acampo, who was in Liverpool recently to help launch his newest restaurant. Gino was in great form, telling me all about his latest venture, where he’s spending Christmas this year and, more importantly, what’s on the menu! Next, we’ve picked out five family-friendly things to do in Liverpool this festive season and Annie S has selected her Xmas fashion must-haves for the whole household. Plus we caught up with actor Christopher Rankin, who played Percy Weasley in the Harry Potter movie series, to find out more about a magical music event taking place at the Liverpool Olympia next April. Meanwhile, on the property front, we shine the spotlight on a simply stunning five-bedroom home in Formby and have news of a big award win for Redwing and its Plaza 1821 development. Elsewhere our gardening expert Heather Marsh highlights the most festive of fruits, VideOdyssey's Andy Johnson gives us his take on Peter Jackson’s much-awaited Fab Four documentary series and Jon Atkinson from Liverpool wine merchants WineTime takes us through his favourite tipples for 25th December and beyond. Finally, on behalf of the entire YM Liverpool team, I wish you a Merry Christmas and a joyous New Year.

Why Liverpool? Why not? I love you guys. You’ve always been very kind to me. So I thought, well, if I can do another restaurant and people appreciate it, why not?

Buon

In the city to mark the launch of his newest eatery at the INNSiDE Liverpool hotel, we sat down with Gino to discuss his latest venture and what he’s got planned for the festive season words lawrence saunders

INTERVIEW

Clockwise: Gino’s at INNSiDE Liverpool; with Fred Sirieix (left) and Gordon Ramsay (right); enjoying one of his pasta dishes in Sardinia

You’ve recently launched a new food range with ASDA. How important is it to you that people try to cook Italian cuisine at home? That’s the whole idea of Gino on television. The aim for me whenever I do television, or whenever I write a book, is to encourage people in the kitchen. Even if I can encourage one person to go in the kitchen and cook something it means I’ve done my job well. The reason why we do ranges like the one in ASDA is because I want people to get the best ingredients ever. But also I understand that like me, we don’t always want to cook every day – sometimes we want a day off. That is why I do ready meals which are freshly made with no preservatives – just natural ingredients from Italy, frozen and sent straight here.

!

How has your new restaurant been going and why did you decide to open a second one here in Liverpool? The restaurant is going really, really well. I think we opened at the right time, just after COVID when people were super excited to go out spending money, partying, drinking, eating great food. Why Liverpool? Why not? I love you guys. You’ve always been very kind to me with the previous restaurant that I have [on Castle Street]. So I thought, well, if I can do another restaurant and people appreciate it, why not?

It looks like you have such a brilliant time on Gordon, Gino & Fred. Is it really as much fun as it seems? More fun! What you see on television is probably half the amount of fun that we actually have, to be honest with you. We really enjoy ourselves when we film Gordon, Gino & Fred. Do you think you’ll be doing another series? We will next year at some point, we just need to get the diary together. We’re all very busy but you know, all three of us want to do it. We were supposed to go to New York for the Christmas special this year but we just spend Christmas couldn’t do it because of COVID – it was a nightmare.

Had you visited Liverpool before today? I always Oh, yes. I’ve been to Liverpool many, many in my house on the island of times. I remember 25 years ago, when I came to this country, I wanted to live in we look ahead to Christmas, I was Sardinia. My family go there As Liverpool. My girlfriend at the time, who is wondering what your plans are and now my wife Jessica, didn’t want to move – we just love it, surrounded whether you’ll be heading home to Italy up here because she wanted to stay with for the festive period? by Italian food. her mum in London. But Liverpool would I always spend Christmas in my house on have been one of my choices to move to the island of Sardinia. Every Christmas all my straightaway. The only problem I probably could have had is that I family go there – we just love it, surrounded by Italian food. I get less don’t really understand your accent – as much as you sometimes don’t distracted when I’m in Italy because people know that I’m on holiday understand mine! and I don’t get bothered.

HAARALA HAMILTON

You were born and raised in Naples – a place that has always reminded me a bit of Liverpool. I was wondering whether you saw that connection or not? You know, maybe you are right, there is some kind of weird connection. Yes, because Liverpool is as crazy as [Naples], 100%! Could you tell us more about the new autumn/winter menu that you’ve got at the restaurant? The menu is probably one of my favourite ones because the dishes are very warm. I’m the kind of guy who likes full-on dishes when they’re really tasty. The spring and summer [menus] are great but more colourful and lighter. The autumn/winter one – I’m really looking forward to it.

What will be on the menu on Christmas Day? One thing that my family always has at Christmas is fish and seafood – we don’t really have a turkey because none of us likes it. I don’t think many people do like turkey to be honest. One thing that I never understood is why people choose the best day of the year to have the worst meal of the year! I can’t get my head around it. We don’t have the traditional things that you have every Christmas. But one thing for sure is that the Di Campo family is all about fish and seafood. We have mussels, clams, lobster, scallops, sea bass – whatever fish you can think of, we have it. NEWS

NEXT STEPS REVEALED FOR ‘GAME-CHANGING’ LITTLEWOODS STUDIOS SCHEME Project could transform Liverpool into “one of Europe’s premier TV and film hubs” A REPORT REQUESTING PERMISSION to unlock a potential £70 million redevelopment of the iconic Littlewoods building was approved by Liverpool City Council on 3 December. The scheme, which would include major studios, creative office space and new media facilities, could create almost 4,000 jobs. The report outlined proposals to kick-start a major redevelopment in two phases, with approval given to begin an £8m remediation of the building in early 2022. Phase one funding will come from the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority and be granted to developers CAPITAL&CENTRIC to carry out site investigations, remediation and main scheme design works. The £8m required is part of a wider £17m funding package previously agreed by the combined authority, £3m of which has already delivered The Depot studios, which are located on an adjoining plot. Phase one works will take approximately a

year and once phase two is fully costed, this could lead to a full development contract. For phase two to proceed a fully-costed funding package is required, with the council and combined authority projecting to both invest £12m and a commercial lender being sought for the balance. The scheme, which would be subject to planning permission, already has two proposed major anchor tenants – Twickenham Studios and Liverpool John Moores University. The arrangement would provide a direct link between academia and industry in what would be the largest facility of its type in the UK. Councillor Sarah Doyle, Liverpool City Council’s cabinet member for economic

development, says: “The Littlewoods Studios scheme has the potential to be a real game-changer for the city’s TV and film sector, underlining our growth as a truly world-class location. “Liverpool’s offer has blossomed over the past decade to the point that it feels like your bumping into a TV crew every other day or seeing the city on the TV or in the cinema every other week. “The move from being the ‘go to city’ for exterior shoots to one that can provide productions with the studios and talent supply to match our stunning backdrops is one the city needs to deliver, as the economic and educational benefits are there for all to see.”

IMMERSIVE ART INSTALLATION SET TO LIGHT UP LIVERPOOL CATHEDRAL THROUGH AN “EXTRAORDINARY DISPLAY OF LIGHTS, projections and sound”, visitors to Liverpool Cathedral will be surrounded by the “awe-inspiring wonders of the universe” as they explore the building’s vast splendour. The installation will come to life after dark as the Gothic architecture of the cathedral becomes a canvas for an exploration of space and the universe, with a son-et-lumière (sound and light show) performance taking place every evening between 18-27 February 2022. Combining the projections of sculptor, Peter Walker, with the atmospheric sounds of composer, David Harper, ‘Space, The Universe and Everything’ is the work of award-winning artistic collaboration, Luxmuralis, the team behind ‘Angel Wings’ and ‘Peace Doves’ at Liverpool Cathedral. Speaking on returning to Liverpool Cathedral with a new immersive art installation, Peter Walker, artistic director of Luxmuralis, says: “We’re incredibly excited about bringing ‘Space, The Universe and Everything’ to such a remarkable building. “Mankind has only scratched the surface of space discovery and this artwork explores the amazing wonders of the universe, capturing the excitement of what the next steps might be as we see far away galaxies emerge before us.

THINGS TO DO

Experience the Festive Light Trail This Christmas, Royal Albert Dock will be illuminated with the return of the much-loved Light Trail around its historic colonnades. Taking place across the whole Grade I-listed landmark, your quest to discover nautical characters from Liverpool’s coat of arms starts at the entrance gates with Neptune and Triton standing tall and leading the way underneath the curtain of blue lights along Salthouse Quay. Wander past the festively-lit trees which lead up to Hartley Quay and you’ll find the perfect photo opportunity at Hartley Bridge with the dock’s illuminated backdrop. As well as the bright lights, festive food and drink will be available from the dock’s independent bars and restaurants. Sample a sweet cranberry toastie at One O’Clock Gun or a succulent turkey taco at Madre, before washing it down with a Toblerone inspired cocktail at Maray or a gingerbread Espresso Martini from Gusto. Download the Light Trial map to your phone from www.albertdock.com/christmas to ensure you don’t miss a thing.

Take in a workshop at the Museum of Liverpool The National Museum of Liverpool is hosting a variety of workshops that are sure to give you that festive feeling. Experience a Victorian Christmas at Sudley House, with the opportunity to explore the palatial residence of George Holt and his family. A Christmas crafts workshop is also taking place for youngsters at the Walker Art Gallery. Spend some time crafting Christmas decorations in the Walker Art Gallery Lunch Room on 11 and 18 December between 1-4pm. A similar workshop will be held for little ones at the Lady Lever Art Gallery from 21-29 December between 1-4pm. All these workshops are free and operate on a first-come, firstserved basis.

Strike a pose beneath the Liverpool ONE Christmas tree The Christmas tree Liverpool is perhaps best known for is the one on show in Liverpool ONE every year. The 30-metre-high specimen first made its debut in 2015 when it became the UK’s tallest Christmas tree and since then, has been unmissable with its bright red hearts. Although it may not be very traditional, it certainly makes a statement! Visitors to Liverpool ONE this festive season will also have the chance to pick up their own very special tree to take home – for free. The retail and leisure destination has partnered with The Mersey Forest and Liverpool City Council to give away at least 3,000 trees, which will be available on a first-come, first-served basis from the Information Centre on Wall Street.

Visit Liverpool’s Christmas Market The Liverpool Christmas Market is one of the city’s headline attractions over the festive period and was certainly a big miss last year. Traditionally, the market has been located at the front of St George’s Hall; however, due to the ongoing redevelopments of Lime Street, the markets have moved further down to St John’s Gardens, William Brown Street, and the North Entrance of St George's Hall. The festive market offers an enchanting experience for all ages, with a variety of local food, drinks and crafts available throughout. For the younger visitors, a Santa’s Village offers magical rides such as a big wheel and a giant Bavarian snow slide. If you have a sweet tooth, there are food stalls selling crepes and hot chocolate – with Bailey’s hot chocolate available for older visitors that will leave you feeling rather merry indeed! Themed bars are scattered around the market, each with its own unique style, such as the Windmill, Alpine Lodge, and Barrel Bar. And new for 2021 is the Bavarian bar, where visitors will have the chance to try out some authentic German beverages. The Christmas Market is open every day until 23 December at 8pm. YM Liverpool

Dental Negligence Claims – Consult the legal experts If you have suffered avoidable pain or injury due to negligent dental treatment and are looking to make a compensation claim against the practitioner, it is important that you seek specialist legal advice at your earliest convenience. Our experienced dental negligence team at Paul Crowley & Co Solicitors will provide you with expert legal advice. Mike Sexton, Head of Dental Negligence, guides you through the legal process to achieving a successful claim What is dental negligence?

Dental care in England and Wales is usually excellent, but sometimes things can go wrong. If the treatment carried out by the dental practitioner falls below acceptable dental standards, then it can cause harm to the patient through dental negligence.

Duty of Care

A breach of duty of care occurs where it is reasonably foreseeable that the dentist, either through his/her actions or failure to act, has caused harm to a person. To make a claim, it must be proven that the treatment you received has fallen below a reasonable standard of a responsible body of dentists practising in that field. This may include: Misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis Delay in treatment and tests Failure to take account of your dental history Failure to advise about the risks of a particular treatment Dental implant failure

the mistake. There are exceptions: the time period doesn’t begin for children until their 18th birthday and does not apply to patients without the capacity to manage their own affairs.

Can I claim for dental negligence?

Yes, you can. In order to pursue a claim, you will need to show that a breach of care by the dental professional has directly caused you harm. At Paul Crowley & Co, our expert dental negligence lawyers can help you to bring about a successful compensation claim for: Pain and suffering Past expenses Remedial and maintenance costs of further treatment

Choosing the right Solicitor

Limitation Period

Dental negligence cases must be based on expert dental evidence, so your claim must be supported by independent evidence from a dental professional, for you to have a successful claim. The patient must be able to prove that the dental practitioner acted negligently which caused an injury. Paul Crowley & Co will obtain your dental records and decide if you have a strong enough case

The time limit for making a dental negligence claim and for legal proceedings to be brought against the dental practitioner must be issued within 3 years from when the incident happened or when you first became aware of

The qualified dental negligence team at Paul Crowley & Co can advise you on whether you have a valid claim, the potential outcome, and the funding of your claim.

Required Evidence

for us to pursue. There are four legal elements for a successful claim: Duty: The dentist owed a duty of care to the patient. Breach: Evidence of a breach of duty of care. Causation: The patient suffered harm as a direct result of the breach. Damages: The amount of money awarded for the injury, expenses and losses suffered.

• • • •

Timescale

For a dental negligence claim to be properly investigated, it can take 24-36 months or longer in serious cases. Our team at Paul Crowley & Co will arrange for your dental records to be reviewed by an independent dental expert, who will prepare a report reviewing your treatment and advising if there are grounds for making a claim. If supportive, a detailed Letter of Claim will be drafted and sent to the dentist who will have four months to provide a formal Letter of Response. If negligence is admitted, then settlement negotiations can take place. If negligence is denied, then we will consider if court proceedings should be issued.

No Win, No Fee

You won’t have to worry about paying any legal fees upfront. Paul Crowley & Co will act on your behalf on a Conditional Fee basis (also known as ‘No Win, No Fee’). Paul Crowley & Co… on your side.

FILM

VIDEODYSSEY’S

The Beatles: Get Back

THE MONTH

Andy Johnson gives us his take on Peter Jackson’s much-awaited Fab Four documentary series

MOVIE OF

Don’t let me down...

LINDA McCARTNEY/APPLE COPRS LTD

Four lads from Liverpool who shook the world... we know the story inside out. But if you were born in recent decades, with the echoes of Beatlemania faded into history, you might wonder why they broke up at the peak of their powers and played their last live show on a listless London rooftop? This documentary from super fan and legendary filmmaker Peter Jackson paints an entirely different picture from the frenzy of infighting and litigation that entered legend. Above all else, it shows that compromise and empathy are essential to make any marriage work, musical or otherwise. The fascination and joy of watching the band’s songwriting process first hand, hooks you immediately. The original Let It Be film, directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg, is too painful to watch, as it focuses tightly on the tension and feud between George and Paul, while John and Ringo look on bemused. When Harrison famously says: ‘I’ll play whatever you want me to play. Or I won’t play at all if you don’t want me to play’, you can see on Paul’s face he knows this is the beginning of the end. Much maligned as the catalyst for their breakup – the Let It Be sessions captured over 60 hours of unseen film and 150 hours of audio. The frustration within the group is tough to watch. You feel you’re sat in the middle, just like Yoko, witnessing the end of the world’s greatest band and there’s nothing you can do about it – apart from eating toast and slurping tea, which seems to be what got The Beatles through most challenges. George shows he had a different understanding of what they had agreed to when he asks surprised: ‘So are they recording all our conversations?’ This eight-hour documentary will no doubt cause a lot of Beatle heads to switch their fave Mop Top. You will connect with each one in a new way. You see why they became disenchanted with the idea of being ‘Fab’. Tasked with creating an album and a show in just two weeks, the pressure on the group is palpable. Prophetically, Paul envisions them playing somewhere they shouldn’t and being hauled away by the police mid-song: ‘She came in through the bathroom window... snatch!’.

Their time in Hamburg gets mentioned a lot, as though it’s a shared reference that shows if they survived that experience, they can get through anything. John seems to be stoned out of his wits at the start, but as they leave Twickenham and head for their Apple HQ, we see his razorsharp wit emerge. George Martin suggests that they’ve got the best takes for ‘Get Back’ and if not, they can be edited together, to which John shoots back: ‘Edits!? How dare you sir, we are The Bootles!’. Paul comes across as a tough taskmaster, but he admits to craving discipline at work. The conversation where he brings up how much they miss the guiding hand of ‘Mr Epstein’ is telling. Also, he repeats the need for “an aim” in their work. He says he’s “scared of being the boss”, and after George leaves the band, the others coolly call his bluff. One of the most riveting moments comes from a secret conversation caught by a mic hidden in a flowerpot, in which Paul and John talk about George and the “festering wounds” they’ve allowed to take hold. You can see why George needed to stick up for himself. He often comes across as irascible, but understandably so, after sharing a song so powerful as ‘All Things Must Pass’ and getting a tepid reaction from the best songwriting duo of all time. George’s clothes, paired with his pink and green guitar, steal the show style-wise. There’s also the steady beat of Ringo to enjoy. Always the first to arrive, he often seems to be just hanging in there – after being the first Beatle to leave the group. The scene where he starts crafting ‘Octopus’s Garden’ with George is a lovely moment. When they eventually land on the idea of playing a show on the roof in the cold bluster of January, George is characteristically unenthusiastic but goes along with the plan. What follows in 40 minutes of unbridled joy as we watch how the events unfolded, with Jackson deftly using a split-screen to show as much footage as possible, including the pair of strikingly young bobbies who try to tackle the disturbance of the peace with threats of arrest but look totally out of their depth. If only The Beatles had been arrested; maybe being in the clink together would have allowed them more time to work out their differences. People often ask me whether I only watch things on VHS. Although I’m trying to save videotapes from oblivion... I’m not a complete Luddite. Get Back is worth the Mickey Mouse streaming subscription fee The Beatles: alone. Are you running the risk of outliving your Savings? In a world of low interest rates, an unpredictable economy and increasing life expectancy, useful guidance on retirement planning is a necessity

W

hether you have just started out on life’s journey, or you’re close to retirement, pension planning should be high on your wealth management agenda. However, you will have very different needs and objectives depending on which part of the journey you are on. The earlier you start planning, the easier it will potentially be to create the retirement lifestyle you wish to have. The stark reality is that most of us need to be saving more. With life expectancy increasing, retirement now represents a far greater proportion of our lives than previously expected. Whilst we are earning, we all must accumulate more, to meet the extra costs of this increased life expectancy. The decisions we make throughout our lives while working will dictate the standard of living we will enjoy in retirement. The golden rule is to determine exactly how much you are going to need in

retirement – and to start planning for it early. Delays costs money but making worthwhile contributions need not be that difficult. Making pension contributions could be seen as a necessary expense: they should not be an afterthought. Budgeting for a regular monthly amount towards any pension savings could be considered as an integral part of business or household budgeting, just like the heating and lighting bills. Remember that making annual or single contributions has the possibility of buying into the market at the ‘wrong’ time. However, monthly contributions help to smooth out the effect of fluctuations in unit prices. Those relying solely on the State Pension to see them through their later years will have to accept that their standard of living is going to drop significantly. The State Pension provides a limited income (£175.20 for a single person, per week, based on a full NI record in

the 2020/2021 tax year), which falls drastically short of what is really needed to fund a comfortable lifestyle. So how do we avoid a shortfall of funds in retirement? First, decide how large a fund you will need. One method is to multiply your target retirement income by 25. For example, if you think you’ll need £30,000 a year, aim for a fund of £750,000. Next, select the most appropriate investment vehicles to help achieve your goal. Property, investment bonds and ISAs have all proved popular over recent years but don’t offer the same degree of tax breaks as a pension.

Whatever your age, you should regularly review whether your saving strategy is on track to provide for retirement.

To help avoid running out of money, selecting a balanced and well-diversified investment portfolio is critical, but knowing how much money to take from a drawdown policy is arguably of greater importance. There’s no better time like the present for you to consider how to enhance or protect your wealth whilst thinking about your retirement. The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than the amount invested. The levels and bases of taxation and reliefs from taxation, can change at any time and are generally dependent on individual circumstances. Please don’t hesitate to contact us at Rhodes Brook Financial if you wish to have a no obligation chat regarding your planning for retirement. RBF Logo Blue Print.pdf 1 26/06/2018 11:52:12

It’s a date! Heather Marsh looks at the festive fruit and shares her delicious recipe for an alternative to the Christmas pud

IF THERE IS ONE THING THAT TAKES ME BACK to Christmases of years gone by, it’s seeing a box of ‘Eat Me’ dates. Every year my mother would buy the obligatory box, knowing full well that no one would touch them. My brother and I thought they looked like fat cockroaches, so unless she ate them herself, with the plastic twig that came in every box, they would end up at the back of a kitchen cupboard to be found the following year looking even more shrivelled and disgusting than before. These days I love this ugly fruit and I’m glad it’s enjoying somewhat of a renaissance. The plump

juicy Medjool variety in particular is very popular and readily available in supermarkets. Dates are the sweet chewy fruit of the palm tree (Phoenix dactylifera) and only grow in extremely hot climates. With a very high natural sugar content, they are rich in iron, fibre and antioxidants. It’s no surprise then that the date’s powerful health benefits have been valued since ancient times. Records show that the fruit was part of a staple diet for the Babylonians more than 8,000 years ago. Native to the Middle East, they are now available all year round here in the UK.

RECIPE

Sticky Date Pudding with Toffee Sauce

A family favourite – a delicious moist sponge with a creamy toffee sauce, it certainly gives Christmas pudding a run for its money. Why not give it a try!

INGREDIENTS Serves 6

Date palm

A healthy substitute for refined sugar, dates can be used as a natural sweetener and offer a fantastic quick energy boost. Forget those sugary drinks after a workout, simply pop a few dates for an instant pick me up. Don’t worry about a sugar crash later either, as the date’s high fibre content helps slow digestion. Fresh dates can be stored in the fridge for months, even longer in the freezer, whilst dried dates will last for about a year in a fridge and for about two if frozen. There are many ways to eat dates and since I’ve written this piece, I’ve found myself putting them into everything! Here are a few of my mouth-watering ideas: Stuffed fresh Medjool dates with cream cheese mixed with chopped nuts are delicious festive fare – especially when served with a nice glass of port. A date fondue, with melted dark chocolate for dipping and bowls of toasted coconut for coating, is sensational too and perfect with a glass of fizz. I can’t forget my regular breakfast smoothie either. I’ve been blending four or five dates in with my usual banana and beetroot base. Not only does this add extra fibre, but the natural sugars help boost energy levels too – helping me stay fuelled for longer. Try stirring a handful of chopped dates and some chilli flakes into a beef casserole as I did recently, it certainly livened things up. The fruit added a sweet richness to what would have otherwise been a rather boring stew. Whatever you think about this fruit, I do hope I’ve managed to tempt you if you’ve not already started ‘dating’. With Christmas on the horizon, I’m trusting that it won’t be cancelled again this year, but with the pandemic still with us, no one can be too sure of what lies ahead. Positive thinking though, all I wish for is a more festive season than last year and spent in the company of family and friends.

250g chopped dates (fresh or dried)

225g self-raising flour

300ml water

For the sauce

125g softened butter 125g caster sugar

1 tsp baking powder 300ml double cream

1 tbsp vanilla extract

150g soft light brown sugar

3 eggs

60g butter

METHOD 1. Place the chopped dates into a small saucepan, cover with water and bring to a boil. Simmer on low heat for five minutes until soft and pulpy. Leave to cool then puree the dates using a blender. It’s up to you how smooth you want this, I prefer mine with some texture left. 2. Grease a 1.5-litre ovenproof pudding basin and place it inside a roasting tin. 3. Put the butter, sugar, vanilla and eggs into a bowl and beat with an electric whisk for two minutes, then gradually add the flour and baking powder until the mixture is pale and creamy. 4. Take two tablespoons of the date puree and set it aside for the sauce. Stir the rest of the puree into the pudding mixture using a metal spoon. Then put the mixture into the prepared pudding basin. Pour boiling water to a depth of 1.5cm into the tin around the basin and then bake the pudding in a preheated oven at 180°C for 35-40 minutes. 5. Put half the cream, brown sugar and butter in a pan and heat gently to dissolve the sugar. Bring to the boil and simmer for about five minutes until it turns a dark toffee colour. Stir in the date puree you have set aside and the remaining cream. Pour into a jug. 6. To loosen the pudding from the basin, carefully run a knife around the rim and sides, then holding a serving plate firmly on top of the basin, invert it quickly. You should be able to lift the basin off cleanly, leaving your majestic pudding ready to be smothered in sauce and served.

Christopher Rankin is a New Zealand-born British actor best known for his role as Hogwarts head boy Percy Weasley in the all-conquering Harry Potter movie series. He will be appearing at the Liverpool Olympia in April 2022 as part of ‘The Magical Music of Harry Potter’ – a special concert experience featuring key pieces from the Wizarding World franchise words lawrence saunders

How did you become a part of Harry Potter film series? My mother is a teacher and she introduced me to the books when I was about 13 years old. A few years after the first book (Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone) came out it was announced on Newsround that a film adaptation was to be made and that they wanted any child who liked Harry Potter, and liked acting, to write to them. I’d done plays and musicals at school and with community theatre groups, and thought it sounded like good fun. Admittedly I was a bit old [for the role], they were looking realistically for 11-12-year-old kids, but I thought: ‘I’m 16 years old, I’ve got ginger hair, I was a school prefect – I’m basically Percy Weasley!’.

Also, if you asked any teenager who read the Harry Potter books to describe what Hogwarts looked like, they would all describe almost exactly the same thing. And that is almost exactly what you see in the film. That was always an amazing thing to me.

So I wrote a letter saying essentially just that: ‘My name is Chris, I really like acting, I really love Harry Potter and I’m the same age as Percy. I have ginger hair and I’m a school prefect. I kinda think I already own the part’.

Potter stories, but she hasn’t said she’ll never write about the wider Wizarding World again. We have Fantastic Beasts and the Cursed Child play. I think it would be odd if at some point the Cursed Child didn’t become a film. I’d like to see it myself if there wasn’t something about Harry’s parents somewhere down the line, maybe a prequel. There’s so much unexplored space in those stories, so much that we know a little bit [about] but not everything.

Do you think there will be another Harry Potter story made into a film again? Oh, there are so many rumours! Personally, I think it is inevitable that there will be more at some point. What that is, I don’t know. [JK Rowling] has always been very careful about not saying that there won’t be any more stories. She said there won’t be any more Harry

Perfe c A

Did you know how many films you would shoot? No, we were originally contracted for one movie with an option for a second, if the first one was successful. At that point, there were only four books. I didn’t have any idea about how the film industry worked or how enormous the Philosopher’s Stone was going to be. Then the film came out and suddenly it’s the second-biggest movie franchise in the world after Star Wars! How would you explain this enormous success? It’s a fantastic story but there are many other great stories. Why do you think Harry Potter has been so popular? That’s a really good question. JK Rowling has an amazing way with words. She finds a way to describe things and tell stories in such a way that it takes your imagination with you. She might not be a Shakespeare, she might not be a Tolkien, but she tells a wonderful story and there’s something timeless about Harry Potter. It’s a story that any adolescent boy or girl can relate to in some way. Everybody wants to be able to fly, to have a go on a broomstick or visit a magic store. I’m not sure everyone would want to go on an adventure with three hobbits.

What was the most amazing moment of working on the Harry Potter films? The first thing that comes to my mind is the premiere for the first film because that was the first time any of us had probably realised how enormous Harry Potter was going to be. We turned up to Leicester Square in London and got out of our cars at this red carpet premiere and there were literally thousands and thousands of people screaming! It was like you were The Beatles. It was absolutely insane! I think that will always be one of my most emotional memories – [the moment] when I realised this was something so unique and so incredibly special. And now you are coming on tour with ‘The Magical Music of Harry Potter’? It’s a dream come true to be on stage with the London Symphonic Orchestra. [The show] is incredible – the best musical evening you can experience with Harry Potter. I love singing; one of my favourites is ‘Let Me Entertain You’ by Robbie Williams. I grew up playing the violin, so classical music has always been a huge part of my life. I played in orchestras when I was much younger as well. The music of John Williams and the Harry Potter film series is a huge part of my life. Have you learned any magic tricks for the show? Not that I can show you, but wait and see! We usually don’t do magic outside of Hogwarts, but we may have a surprise for our guests.

SIAN TRENBERTH

So you chose yourself? Basically, yes! About four months later I had a phone call saying: ‘Will you come to London and audition for Percy’? I did, and a day or two later I had a callback audition with the director Chris Columbus. I started shooting about a week after that. When it happened, it happened really quickly. I went from finishing high school to working full time on Harry Potter, with no time to adjust to what was going on in my brain. It was quite mad.

Dress up the

Christmas table Lay the table for friends, family and good food this Christmas and celebrate togetherness in style

26

YM Liverpool

HOME

IF THERE’S ONE TIME IN THE YEAR when you can really go to town with tablescaping, Christmas is surely it. It’s all part of the tradition and excitement that stretches from Christmas Eve dinner to New Year’s Eve, with the mighty Christmas Day dinner itself in between. What you put on the table should match what you’ll be serving, and a welcoming scheme will set the scene for sharing special times. Whether you are setting the table for 16 or arranging a smaller, more intimate feast, there are easy ways to impress. Mixing and matching tableware is totally fine for place settings for larger numbers – just stick to a common theme and find a rhythm to the mix up of plates and glasses. A loose and relaxed central garland of foliage can look wonderful on a long table and will still leave room for the sprouts, while baubles and decorations with simple paper tags make great place settings that guests can take away as keepsakes. Check out our fun selection of novelty shapes to add personality to your theme. And whether you love to dress up with glamour or prefer the more relaxed country or Scandi look, we have beautiful ideas that will make sitting down to dinner with those you love even more special this Christmas. We simply can’t wait… GO ALL OUT GLAM The secret to a glamorous luxe scheme is to layer up the place settings and to play with the contrast between moody dark colours and the glisten of gold. It’s a big style statement so consider how it works within the room. In an immersive green room, a shot of silky green runner is enough to pull the look together, but don’t worry if your walls are light – you can pile on the glamour by layering cloths. Start with a dark undercloth in a luxe fabric then add a lighter shade on top and finish with a runner. The fun part comes with what goes on top. The charger plate is the mainstay of the glam setting and that glimpse of gold (or silver) beneath a white plate instantly lights up the table. Pick up gold in small details – the gilded rim of a plate or glass, cutlery if you’re feeling bold. Mixing in vintage pieces works a treat for this look – try old-school favourites such as candelabras, serving spoons or gravy boats, and add in one or two unusual pieces of china. And while beautiful crystal glassware always looks grand, metallic goblets are this year’s decadent choice. For a final flourish, think theatrical and fun. Woodland creatures, mini parcels and real plants…pick your theme and go for it unabashedly. TRADITIONAL COLOURS AND COUNTRY CHARM There is immediate comfort in the traditional festive scheme of red and green – it is Christmas, after all! The colours hark back to the holly and the ivy, and natural elements will always have a place in a country scheme. To keep the look fresh and modern, go for the brightest berry red and look for patterns that sit together happily without being too matchy-matchy. Fine china adds a little finesse for the big day (gold chargers will work here too) but more organic designs, perhaps in stoneware and with a handmade feel, offer a more relaxed approach that’s perfect for Christmas Eve or breakfast on Christmas morning. Time-honoured scents such as spruce, spice and clementine add an extra dimension and don’t miss the chance to get crafty with home-made place names and foliage arrangements. Make dinner a comfortable affair with plenty of cushions and sheepskins on chairs to get truly cosy. LIGHT THE WAY WITH SCANDI TWINKLE If you prefer understated style, a white and snowy scheme is perfect for Christmas. Think linen for tables which is still smart but more relaxed than stiff starched formal tablecloths. Be generous with length and drape, and build interest with textures such as mirror, burnished silver, and gilding on glassware and wood if you are going the Scandi or Alpine route.

ADVERTORIAL

Meet the Merseyside logistics firm expanding to the USA and China Managing director of Hunts Cross-based Brunswick International Steve Crane talks about the firm’s booming business and global expansion plans How long has Brunswick International been operating and what does it do?

Brunswick International is an international logistics company which has been in business for more than 30 years. The company initially started at Brunswick Dock, then moved closer to the dock area at Sandhills until we eventually relocated to a new site at Triumph Trading Estate in 2020. Our new site is purpose-built for the business with vast office and warehouse space which is ideal for the intake of cargo and document formalities.

What have been the biggest changes you’ve seen in the logistics sector since you started?

The changes have been vast in the last 30 years. The biggest being the speed at which shipments are now moved. We can see shipments from all over the world moving on the fastest vessels or by air in record times. Logistics companies have now become a requirement in the freight industry, without them, not very much would move. Firms like ours are needed to assist most companies with the movements of the goods and documentation requirements.

How has Brexit affected the business?

Brexit has had a major impact on all logistics companies. We were conscious of this two years prior [to the referendum] and decided to increase our customs department ten-fold. When Brexit happened our customs side of the business expanded significantly which has increased our business by 500%. We are still picking up new business every day because of this.

Brunswick International is very much a family business. Has that been key to your success?

Yes, very much so. When you have a family involved in business, they have a role to play in every function of the business – including operations, accounting, management and marketing. With having our family spread right across the company, it creates a much more friendly atmosphere throughout the whole firm. Our staff are also treated as our extended family as a result.

What are your business growth and expansion plans for 2022?

We have huge plans for 2022 including new offices in several locations such as Dallas, London and China. Our Dallas office should have opened this year but has been put on hold due to COVID-19. Next year we also want to expand our sales team and we will relocate this team to our premises in Salford. We are also extending our warehouse in Liverpool, which will allow us to accommodate the current increase in trade. 32

Steve Crane (left) and business partner, Fred Connolly, are the team behind Liverpool’s Brunswick International

What advice would you give to anyone looking to pursue a career in the freight and logistics industry? My advice would be to look at logistics seriously. The industry is growing massively year on year and salaries are at a very respectful level compared to two years ago. Customs staff are sought after, especially since Brexit. We are currently working with the British Chambers of Commerce as they agree that training schools are a must for logistics business.

What sort of companies do you work with?

We work with a huge variety of companies. If you look at our customs department, we have a spread of approximately 50% manufacturers and 50% customs agents. Customs agents do not have their own customs department, they look for a company like us to do it on their behalf. The companies we work with can include anyone from motor manufacturers to food producers. We currently work for over 200 companies, so as you can imagine the range of products we deal with is vast.

With having our family spread right across the company, it creates a much more friendly atmosphere throughout the whole firm. Our staff are also treated as our extended family as a result.

You have recently opened a new operation in Salford. How is this going?

Salford Quays has been a great success. We set it up to do customs work in conjunction with our Liverpool premises. We currently employ 10 people in Manchester - they look after customs formalities and deep-sea shipments. As previously mentioned, we are going to set up our sales team from this building too and we expect this to be fully functional in early 2022.

STARS OUT IN FORCE AS MORE THAN £250,000 RAISED AT FOOTBALL FOR CHANGE FUNDRAISER Sir Rod Stewart, Pixie Lott, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Jamie Carragher were in attendance at Titanic Hotel THE CHARITABLE MOVEMENT was launched in May this year by Liverpool FC star Trent Alexander-Arnold, Wolverhampton Wanderers captain Conor Coady and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher – alongside a number of the North West’s top business leaders. The foundation, sponsored by Swinton Insurance, held its inaugural gala dinner at the Titanic Hotel in November to raise funds for disadvantaged young people who find themselves devoid of opportunities in education and employment. Westlife star Nicky Byrne played host for the evening, while Pixie Lott and M People’s Heather Small entertained guests in a star-studded room alongside the likes of Everton FC’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Celtic devotee Sir Rod Stewart and Reds legend Jamie Carragher – who all took part in a hugely engaging ‘in conversation’ chaired by the comedian Russell Howard. Pixie Lott

Sir Rod treated guests to an acoustic version of ‘Have I Told You Lately’ and serenaded a member of the audience with a rendition of ‘Maggie May’ after she bid £19,000 for a private meeting with him at a show next year. Guests in the room included Carol Vorderman, Jim White, Sammy Lee and Sue Johnson while TV favourite Matt Lucas hosted a poignant video with disadvantaged young people from across Merseyside speaking about their hardship as Football For Change gets set to change lives. More than £250,000 was raised on the night to aid community organisations supporting school leavers who are struggling for employment and education opportunities by giving them training and funding chances to continue their academic journey. Dua Lipa, Daniel Craig, Conor McGregor and Ed Sheeran were just four of the global superstars who came together in support of Football For Change – donating exclusive ‘money-can’t-buy’ items which were auctioned off in order to raise funds. Noel Gallagher, Paul Weller, Robbie Williams, Westlife and Ronnie O’Sullivan also donated incredible prizes alongside Carragher, Alexander-Arnold, Lucas Moura, Fabinho, Carragher and Robbie Fowler – all of whom are involved in the charitable initiative. Ian Donaldson, who helped found Football For Change, says: “This has been a truly remarkable evening involving some of the biggest names in sports and show business and we’ve raised a serious amount of money to help change the lives of young people affected by social and economic disadvantage.”

Public relations executive, Dan Hughes, who organised the event, adds: “I am massively proud of what we achieved at the first Football For Change gala. “Bringing Sir Rod Stewart to Liverpool to support this initiative has been mindblowing. It is something we’ve kept under wraps for a very long time and only told Jamie and the other players at the very last minute! The reaction in the room was fantastic. “Pixie Lott, Westlife’s Nicky Byrne, Russell Howard, Heather Small, Dominic CalvertLewin and of course Jamie Carragher played a huge part in making the night a success. The support from people like Matt Lucas and Carol Voderman has been great too. “Trent, who is away on England duty, did a lot to make his event happen in his home city. Everyone involved could not be more proud.” Businesses including Liverpool’s DAM Health, Legacie Developments, MJ Quinn, Sedulo, Carpenters, Dental Cafe and Everkool were sponsors of the event. PROPERTY New residents’ lounge and lobby unveiled at The Keel Build to Rent development at Queens Dock has undergone a £300k refurbishment WORK TO TRANSFORM THE NORTH LOBBY at The Keel has been completed, enhancing the scheme’s rental experience for residents of central Liverpool. The re-design includes a new lounge and main reception – as well as state-of-the-art co-working spaces to further cater to the rise in home working. Brown and Bancroft Interiors partnered with Jasper Sanders to complete the project which also included the creation of a ‘Zoom room’ and a variety of other social spaces spread across the ground floor. Jasper says: “More than anything I wanted the new space to be a welcoming and comfortable place to live and work. The warm tones will make the space feel friendly and inviting, much like the reception I always get from Liverpudlians. This was most important to me as I wanted residents to instantly feel comfortable in their new space. “On its own private dock overlooking the River Mersey I wanted the interior of the building to reflect what was outside of its walls to hook that connection throughout the unique building, making the newly designed areas feel like a retreat for The Keel’s residents. “Liverpool also has a distinctive and signature style. Liverpool’s residents are incredibly expressive, and I wanted to celebrate this when coming up with a concept design for The Keel’s lobby and communal areas. “I really wanted to showcase Liverpool’s love of glamour and of course the infamous Scouse style, and so adding accents of rose gold and incorporating tinted glass to make people appear sun-kissed was a playful way of honouring this.”

The Keel is also making positive changes to its carbon footprint – switching to a green electricity tariff, utilising solar panels and installing new energy-efficient LED lighting throughout internal and external areas. The new facilities complement The Keel’s existing perks, which include free access to an on-site gym and fitness centre, 24-hour concierge, and communal outdoor space with views of Liverpool’s dockland. Located on a private quay at Queens Dock, the former HMRC offices were converted into 240 waterside apartments in 2015. Cllr Sarah Doyle says announcement is “brilliant news for tenants living in poor housing conditions” THE GOVERNMENT HAS AUTHORISED AN EXTENSIVE Landlord Licensing scheme covering around 80% of privately rented properties in Liverpool. The scheme is based on poor property conditions, targeting the 16 wards in the city where at least one in five homes is owned by a private landlord. Around 45,000 of the 55,000 properties in the original city-wide scheme – which ran from 2015-2020 – are covered, giving the council additional powers to drive up standards and keep vulnerable tenants safe, such as tackling fire and electrical safety hazards, excess cold and damp. The wards included are: Central, Riverside, Greenbank, Kensington, Picton, Tuebrook & Stoneycroft, County, Anfield, St Michael’s, Princes Park, Kirkdale, Old Swan, Warbreck,

Wavertree, Fazakerley and Everton. Councillor Sarah Doyle, cabinet member for strategic development and housing, says: “This is brilliant news for tenants living in poor housing conditions. “Too many vulnerable people in our city are in poor housing conditions, paying rent to a landlord who doesn’t carry out essential maintenance to keep them warm and safe. “The Landlord Licensing Scheme will give us regulation of private rented houses, so that we can take action when concerns are raised. “There is a raft of evidence which shows that council intervention forced bad landlords into taking action to improve their properties. Poor electrical and fire safety standards, as well as damp and anti-social behaviour, contribute to poor health and mental wellbeing.”

The scheme will be introduced from April 2022 and will run for five years. Landlords/agents requiring more details about the scheme should email privatesector.housing@liverpool.gov.uk
