Dearest Y’s Men & friends,

It is my privilege and pleasure to publish the 1st edition of the Y’s Men International. Southeast Asia Region Bulletin 2020 to 2021.

Y’s Men International is a good gregarious, one-hearted society. Everyone has a common goal.

Therefore, whether it is a social movement or an epidemic situation, the charity activities or leadership

training of the various clubs and districts are active and proceeding as scheduled. Bulletin is published every three months. Please make use of it. We look forward to your sharing the highlights with us!

My Dear Friends,

The SEA Region has two Districts, namely Hong Kong and SMIT. We have a total of 29 clubs spread over 10 countries. Currently, our membership number is 426.

Our immediate task is to ensure that our membership does not drop. Not only that, we need to grow at least by 10%, which will bring our membership number to 469. This is not too difficult. All each club needs to do is to add another 2 members. However, many existing clubs do not have the minimum number of 15 each.

This may be a challenge.

Same as for the number of Clubs, let’s try to grow at least 10 % which should bring the number to 32. Here again, to start 3 new Clubs may not be too much of a problem. However, out of the 29 Clubs we have at present, about 4 or 5 Clubs are on the verge of closing. SMIT District DG Peter Tay and a few of us are looking at ways to try and revive them.

The world we are living in today is unpredictable. There are many problems, example Climate Change; Wars and rumours of Wars; Natural Calamities; Pandemic COVID-19; to name a few. All our Clubs are involved in looking after the Elderly, the Young, and the Poor and Needy. Today, the sandwiched group are those between 40 to 60 years old, who are sole breadwinners, and who lost their jobs, are the most vulnerable. It may be good for Clubs to look out for such people in your own country, and to render some support to this group of people.

Communication between Clubs is very important. Currently, we don’t seem to talk to each other at all. Because of this, we are going to publish a

Joyful Events in Southeast Asia Region

Some joyful events occurred in Southeast Asia (SEA) Region between late June and early July 2020, there were a few joyful events in the region of Southeast Asia. The first event was the installation of SMIT District on June 27, 2020. DG Peter Tay was installed by the Regional Director, LeeLiat Cheng and witnessed

by APE David Lua, PAP Edward Ong and the secretary of SMIT Doris Moh at YMCA Singapore. This was followed by the Joint Installation of the SEA Regional Director and Hong Kong District. Although there was a sudden outbreak of COVID-19 in Hong Kong that

the government implemented a restriction order, the event was successfully held at the Crystal Ballroom of Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong on July 11, 2020. The event was officiated by AP David Lua via on-line. AP David Lua also hosted the inauguration for RD Lee Liat Cheng while RD installed DG Joan Wong and her District Officers. Club presidents in Hong Kong were also installed and a handover ceremony was done on the same day. A warm congratulation extended to RD, DGs of SMIT and Hong Hong District and wish them every success.

Districts News

Hong Kong District Organized a One-day Leadership Training

Hong Kong District organized a one-day Leadership Training Workshop for new club presidents and officers on July 4, 2020 (Sat) at the Yuen Long Community Hall. This training was an annual event and there were over 30 participants to attend on that day. All speakers for the training were senior Y’s Men: PAT/PRD James Kong, ASD/PRD Frederick Ng, ASD Rose Yun, DG Joan Wong and PCP Edith Law. Kelvin Li, District Related Secretary also attended to brief the support from YMCA.

Sponsor Club Meeting with Pro-tem Charter Club

AP David Lua called a meeting of Regional and District leadership team and the Sponsor Club, Singapore Alpha Chapter with Pro-tem Charter President of an EBBA Club, Y Service Club of Johor Eagles, Malaysia.

Held on July 27, 2020 at YMCA of Singapore with overseas participation over ZOOM, the primary purpose of the meeting was a Get-to-know-you session and for the YSC Johor Eagles leadership to learn more about YMI and the running of a YSC. Present at the meeting were RD Lee Liat Cheng, RS/RDE Joan Wong, YM Peter Tay, SMIT District Governor, ASD-EMC/PAP Edward Ong, RSD-Extension James Kong, RSD-Deputy Extension Deepak Bhandari, CS/PRD Alpha Chapter Patricia Lim, CP Daniel Ng, Alpha Chapter Club, Dr PJ John, RSDCE. We look forward to the imminent charter of YSC Johor Eagles and wish it every success in its service to the community.

Regional Director Met with District Leaders and Club Presidents A meeting was initiated by Regional Director, Lee Liat Cheng to greet all district leaders and club presidents from both Hong Kong and SMIT district on July 4, 2020 via Zoom. The meeting was fruitful that not only ROs and RSDs but also club presidents or club representatives could have chance to know each other.

Club News

Elderly Service Offered Before the COVID 19 Pandemic Shut Down This is one of our flagship CS activity with SARAH Senior Activity Center in Bukit Merah. For the last Five years, we have hosted a lunch party complete with prizes and entertainment for 60 elderly beneficiaries of SARAH SAC for Chinese New Year, Moon Cake festival and Christmas. We also brought a

group of 8 wheelchair bound elderly folks from this center out for grocery shopping and tea every month.

This activity had temporarily stopped because of COVID-19 and we hoped to be able to resume soon.

Home Visitation to Children’s Welfare Home

In response to the appeal by Children’s Welfare Home in Ipoh Garden for financial assistance, members paid a visit to the home on 14th June 2020. Club members and friends donated RM2500/- to the home. Members and friends also donated rubbish bags, canned mushroom and cake. By PCP Justine Lim, Y Service Club Ipoh.

Education for all under Covid-19 Pandemic

Y Service Club of Lumbini Nepal continuously provides educational support to the needy children during the Covid-19 pandemic, the club never stop the service and even distribute necessities to those families of the children.

Macau Club Monthly Meeting

The Y’s Men’s Club of Macau holds our regular dinner meeting monthly for our members for fellowship and invites speakers to present speech on specific topic. In our 14 July meeting, we had invited Mr. Chan Chi Lam, the Chief Photography Consultant of Macau Pageant Alliance, as guest speaker to share his experience of photography and the prospect in this field. Members and guests were also motivated to further exchange their perspectives on a variety of livelihood, economic, social and international issues. By CP Lam Sok Sam, Y’s Men’s Club of Macau.

Leadership Training & Organization Development With the threat and challenges posed by Covid-19 pandemic, we have come to accept the New Norm that has been sprung on all countries on an unprecedented scale. Communication and all forms of activities and business have been modified drastically to survive or die a natural demise.

elected or appointed leaders. One can go through every form of training to develop oneself as a Leader in “Y’sdom” to lead and to serve. The trainer or facilitator’s role is to guide and motivate. As such, Area Presidents (APs), Regional Directors (RDs), District Governors (DGs) and Club Presidents (CPs) need to and must lead well as role models.

The extreme stressful conditions affect governments, organisations and industries at every level. Likewise, it has imposed restrictions on how education and training is conducted. This requires leaders to think out of the box and overcome the constraints, as much as those in business have derived new ways to mitigate their revenue deficits and losses.

Leaders are now expected to have knowledge, develop skills to educate, coach, mentor and inspire their Team and Members as model Leaders and true blue Members of this great Movement with its long and rich heritage. We aim to transform all Y’s Men’s Clubs or Y Service Clubs into very active and vibrant Service Clubs to touch lives and improve disadvantaged communities everywhere, serving with commitment and joy.

Acting also as ISD-LTOD, and working with IEO Troika and ISG, we have revamped, designed and produced materials that will reach every level of our movement. We want to get training down to the Club level to develop leaders in every Member as much as possible. This is by way of having training content and modules available on our Y’s Men International website (www.ysmen.org - under the heading of “Training”) whereby every leader and member can access anytime and anywhere even at a local level. To make the content attractive and interesting, they are in the form of colourful and illustrative PowerPoint slides as well as videos. Most are interactive and involve participation and active reading with quizzes to enhance learning and understanding. Training is no longer restricted to the

discernment and truthfulness apart from mindfulness. What has been our darkest moments of despair? In what places having glimpsed the “the light that shines eternally” (Ephesians 2:1-12). The Apostle Paul wrote about such hope in the face of despair and challenges for the churches he had established in Ephesus and others areas of missions in early church history(vv.4-5). As we understand this current world tries to drag us into its depths, but there is no reason for us in faith Mission to succumb to despair and depression.

Father God is the source of all our genuine hope filling us with light and joy.

“Be still... and know that I am God! Psalm 46:10-11

As head of my family I was in touch with each member and extended families who are believers and looking out for others. The circle of life required us to manifest faith, hope and love (1Cor.13:13) as the greatest being love in practical Christian life, with the “pause” needed and “space” greatly needed in our social responsibility as we listened, obeyed and trusted in the Word of God and divine directions.

The miracles of provision daily pointed to Father God’s goodness and mercy. The national leadership was also serving the interest of our island city state, reducing the numbers of fatalities in a special way tracking, testing and testing. Much thanks goes to the health care workers and people helpers in our nation (Romans 8:28-28). The financial support and budget was helpful to ease off and inspired us as a nation as we fought Covid19 virus affecting us as a people alongside the economic downturn. We also shared and cared for others whoever that was needy amongst us.

As this pandemic was a national and global magnitude challenge, it required Social Distancing and Social Responsibility as a family, church and society. Past few years as I was also recovering from a health challenge, my physicians, heath care workers from hospital, church and family was there to help me through operation further hospitalisation with needed rest and recovery over the past four years.

This period was early warning to slow me down and to seek God for healing and divine direction and intent reorientation before Corona virus endemic hit Singapore early 2020. Caused me towards slowing down from active missions and ministry looking out for oneself and loved ones at home. There were many questions which needed answers as we were involved in active work, missions and ministry in Singapore and the region in past decades.

My involvement in YMCA of Singapore, International Y’s Men Alpha chapter was able to reach out to those who were locked down in Bukit Merah and other special needs Parkinsons Associations of Singapore through feeding programmes. Also Southeast Asia region outreach in our Y’sdom beyond the walls of local Churches and missions was a way to bridge the gaps. In closing I give God the praise and thanksgivings for the ongoing Kingdom of God work as we still await for divine and human intervention for the humanity in discovering praying for suitable vaccines or therapies. In summary will conclude by saying throughout my greatest assets is silence...

Silence is deep as eternity...

As a family we had family altar as often as possible also tracking church services online and zooming with associates, as we operated from home being updated by the news media. With all the added inconveniences but still supporting each other by keeping Christ great commands taking to heart in loving God and serve neighbouring people. Keeping on spiritual life in humility, kindness and commitment towards changing as protocols required, as responsible citizens. We were washing hands, wearing mask and watching social distancing using sanitizers.

We also participated in Holy Communion to apply the elements of grace and charisma, when we gathered as church family online. In the dark moments God reached us and body life ministry helped us through this unpredictable times. With so much misinformation going around we had to apply
