IMPORTANT INFO ABOUT REGISTRATION All Fall Session Programs will be visible on the Active site on August 8th.

We are no longer accepting phone calls or emails for registration purposes. The YMCA moved to an online registration platform in April 2022. As we transitioned through this change, we continued to accept registration in person and by email. Going forward, we encourage all members to use the online platform and will offer set times for inperson registration for those who do not have access to a computer/internet (this may change/alter from session to session).

Health and Fitness Low Intensity

Though classes are labelled Low Intensity, it does not mean that you will not be working hard!

Aquafit: An energetic, low impact class that uses the water's resistance to increase muscular strength while maximizing your cardiovascular system.

Medium Intensity Y-Bootcamp: Get a great full body workout full of strength training and cardio Y-Kettlebells: Using ballistic and swinging motions, a kettlebell workout will improve your cardiovascular, strength, and flexibility. Movements incorporate multiple muscles simultaneously and are repeated to ensure a full body workout.

Y-Functional: Take advantage of the many exercises available in the Functional Fitness area to strengthen your core and muscles in a fun group workout!

Aqua Board Fitness (ABF): ABF challenges your typical workout routine in a new and unique way to improve balance, posture and overall strength

Y-Cycle: Cardiovascular interval exercise deigned to provide you with optimal fat burning and strength training

Health and Fitness Meet your Trainers Rob Friedt Rob specializes in functional training using kettlebells, TRX, ropes, etc.

He’s here to encourage, motivate, and guide you through your health and fitness journey, whether increasing strength and muscle, improving your sport, losing weight, or just feeling and moving better.

With years of experience in individual and group training, Rob is certified through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and CanFitPro and is a YMCA-certified Group Fitness Leader.

Peggy Anderson Peggy has been involved in sports and activities from a young age.

From dance to softball to synchronized swimming, both an athlete and a coach. She began volunteering as a fitness instructor at the Y in early 2015 and taught boot camp, strength and conditioning, synergy and cycle classes. She was certified as a Spin instructor in the early months of 2019. In 2019 she was certified as a personal trainer at the Y. Peggy’s primary interest is functional fitness, and her goal is to support and encourage people of all ages to live a healthy, active lifestyle.

Aquatics YMCA Swimming Lessons Parent & Tot (3 mo-2 yrs) Splashers: The child will become acquainted with breath control, floats, surface support and various movements through the water.

Bubblers: Introduction to entering and exiting the water, getting face wet, and various movements through the water.

Preschool (3-5 yrs) Bobbers: The child will be introduced to the water, bobbing, and assisted front and back floats.

Floaters: The child will be introduced to front, and back floats, front and back glides, and 3 metres swim on front and back.

Gliders: The child will be introduced to side kicking, deepwater and build endurance for front and back flutter kicks.

Divers:

The child will be introduced to front swim using arms and legs (10m) and surface support.

Surfers: Children will continue to work on advanced deep-water skills, surface support and be introduced to Front Crawl and Back Crawl.

Jumpers: Children will be introduced to diving into deep water and continue to develop Front Parent able assisted to swim a whole length of the pool.

Aquatics Learn To Swim (6-12 yrs) Otter:

Otter teaches the child how to stay safe in the water and develop their swimming skills.

During these classes, the child will focus on submersion and streamlined gliding.

Seal:

Seal teaching builds on the swimming skills taught in Otter and focuses on propulsion through kicking, rolling balance, and some deeper water skills.

Dolphin:

Dolphin progresses the child's swimming skills into a sequence of events forming front and back crawl motions. This level improves skill coordination and encourages the child to be more comfortable and confident with deep water skills.

Swimmer: Swimmer focuses on the initial standard of front and back crawl for the length of 25m. This level also encourages an increased focus on deepwater skills as they spend most of the class in the deep water.

Star Program (6+ yrs) Star 1:

In the first star level, the child focuses on the whip and egg-beater kicks. Building from these kicks, the child learns elementary backstroke initial standard, builds endurance, and will be able to tread water with buoyant support.

Star 2:

The child will learn to perform front and back crawl at an intermediate standard in the secondstar level. They will also be transitioning from learning whip kick on their back to using it on their front for breaststroke initial standard. They will also be working on gaining their endurance for their 100m swim.

Star 3:

In the third level of the star program, the child will work toward the more advanced standard for front and back crawl. They will also progress their elementary backstroke and breaststroke to the intermediate standard. With these progressions, they will continue building their endurance to tread water for 2 minutes and swim 200m without stopping.

Star 4:

While Breaststroke is progressing to the intermediate standard, the child will learn scissor kick which is a progression to learning sidestroke. Their endurance challenge increases to 350m, and they will learn a few rescue skills.

Star 5:

Butterfly will be the new stroke in this level as they have advanced through the other strokes.

The endurance challenge increases to 500m, and the child will continue to learn rescues and basic first aid skills.

Star 6:

Swimmers will continue to develop lifesaving and first aid skills. They will also begin to learn how to teach others to swim. This level encourages the swimmer to take responsibility for their own learning outcomes by selecting option criteria to learn.

Star 7:

Star 7 bridges to the YMCA Assistant Swim Instructor and Lifesaving Society's Bronze programs. In addition to first aid and lifesaving skills, swimmers will continue to build their abilities by selecting from a list of option criteria.

Adult (18+ yrs) Adult 1: For Adults new to swimming. Learn the basics and develop water comfort. Always in the shallow end.

Adult 2: For adults who have experience in swimming and can swim a whole length of the pool by themselves with an aid.

Adult 3: For adults who have experience in swimming and can swim a whole length of the pool by themselves without aid.

Bubble Swim Leisure space is available for families/bubble groups. Children under 7 must always be accompanied in the water by adults 16 years or older and remain within arm’s reach. Children 7-11 must have an adult in the building while the child(ren) is using the facility.

ABF- Aqua Board Fitness ABF challenges your typical workout routine in a new and unique way. This workout improves balance and posture by being on top of the water, activates core muscle groups, and increases overall strength. The best part is, you don’t even have to be a strong swimmer to participate! See you on the water!

Aquatics Private & Semi-Private Swimming Lessons If you are looking for more one-on-one lessons for you or your child, Private Lessons may be the answer. We offer two different options for Private Lessons. These lessons are student-led and strive to improve swimming abilities and skills for swimmers of all ages.

Private Lessons are one-on-one lessons. $30+tax / per 30-minute class (members) [14 and under do not get taxed] $35+tax / per 30-minute class(non-members) [14 and under do not get taxed] Semi-Private Lessons are for 2 participants, usually siblings, to learn their skills together. $37.50+tax / per 30-minute class(members) [14 and under do not get taxed] $45.50+tax / per 30-minute class(non-members) [14 and under do not get taxed] *For private and semi-private swimming lessons, depending on the child’s swimming ability, a parent or guardian 16 years or older may need to be in the water.*

Lifesaving Society of Canada Bronze Medallion Bronze Medallion challenges the candidate both mentally and physically. Judgment, knowledge, skill, and fitness – the four components of water rescue – form the basis of Bronze Medallion training. In addition, candidates acquire the assessment and problemsolving skills needed to make good decisions in, on, and around the water. Bronze Medallion is a prerequisite for assistant lifeguard training in Bronze Cross.

Lifesaving Society of Canada Bronze Cross The Lifesaving Society’s Bronze Cross begins the transition from lifesaving to lifeguarding and prepares candidates for responsibilities as assistant lifeguards. Candidates strengthen and expand their lifesaving skills and apply the principles and techniques of active surveillance in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross emphasizes the importance of teamwork and communication in preventing and responding to aquatic emergencies. An art class where students will learn new drawing skills and have the opportunity to express themselves through visual art.

Showcase your creativity and learn new skills each week. At the end of the session, you will leave with your own sketchbook and a new love for art.

Child & Youth Leadership Programs Our Youth Leadership Programs promote volunteerism and strong citizenship that will improve the ability of youth to become engaged leaders in their community. Our programs provide youth with opportunities to build their skills through planned lessons and hands-on experiential learning. We work to support participants to develop their skills in communication, decision making and team building throughout the program.

Our goal is to ensure that youth thrive, lead and help create an inclusive community that supports the development and well being of everyone. Our Youth Leader Programs are led by YMCA staff members with experience and commitment to youth leadership and engagement. All programs will have take home element to be completed each week.

Jr Leaders The Junior Leaders program is designed to provide participants with the opportunity to become more independent decision-makers in our community by teaching them introductory leadership skills. In addition to team building and group activities, our Junior Leaders focus on community engagement, such as supporting special events and fundraisers held at the YMCA of Saskatoon. The Junior Leaders program also focuses on developing healthy lifestyles and building positive relationships through fun, interactive and engaging lessons. Ages 9-12.

Leaders in Training (LITs) The Leaders in Training program is designed to teach introductory leadership skills by focusing on effective teamwork and group building. Child & Youth Leader Corps The Leader Corp program enhances youth leadership skills through community involvement, active team engagement, mentorship opportunities and group activities.

Our Leader Corp participants will play an active role in community events, campaigns and fundraisers. Participants will gain hands-on work experience by running children and family events at the YMCA. Ages 13-17.

Saturdays 4:00-6:00pm Member: Free Non-member $50

SCHOOLS OUT DAY CAMP Our SODC’s are a fun and exciting way for children ages 5-12 to spend their day when school is out. Join us in fun activities throughout the day such as; swimming, gym activities, art creations, and science experiments. Each child is placed in a small group with children their own age and is led by one of our fantastic camp leaders. This year, we are taking extra measures to ensure that our staff and participants are safe. We offer before care starting at 7:30am and after care until 6:00pm at no extra cost. Registration is by the day. Cost is $45 per day.

Community Partner Groups Judo “Judo” is actually made of two Japanese words: “ju” and “do”. Ju means “gentle,” and do means “the way,” so put together, the word “Judo” literally translates to “the gentle way.” The development of character, mind, and body. Judo is fun, safe, social, active, and provides a positive learning environment. It also helps build confidence and coordination and promotes anti-bullying and self-protection.

Kinder Judo – Ages 4-6 years old Wednesdays 5:30 pm– 6:15 pm Limited to 12 kids.

Please note that parents are required to come onto the mats to assist in the class.

Beginner Kid’s Judo – Ages 7 years and older Tuesday and Thursdays 5:00 pm-6:00 pm Limited to 12 participants Please note that parents are welcome to come onto the mats to assist in the class.

Intermediate Kid’s Judo - Minimum age is 7 years old, and must have judo experience.

Tuesday and Thursday 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm. Limited to 12 participants High Performance Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm. It is limited to 20 participants. We will have a waiting list and must be approved by Instructor to attend.

Space is limited. All participants MUST register through the YMCA of Saskatoon.

Judo Saskatchewan Requires that ALL judo athletes, regardless of age, MUST pay a CLUB fee. This information is provided at the beginning of the session.

Community Partner Groups Kendo

Kendo is traditional Japanese sword-fighting. Kendo players wear light armour and use split bamboo swords to attack targets on the armour. Kendo is practiced at full speed and complete contact but is very safe due to the equipment and rules. Kendo matches are fast-paced battles of skill and mental strength. Students must be at least 12 years old with no upper age limit.

Saskatoon Kendo Club is a member of the Canadian Kendo Federation, the sole governing body of Kendo in Canada under the International Kendo Federation. Kendo accepts new beginners in September and January. Returning members, or people with previous Kendo experience from other clubs, may join at any time throughout the year. If continuing from Summer, you will have to re-register.

Wado Kai Karate Tuesdays and Thursdays Family Class 7:00-8:00pm (Ages 8+ / Beginner-Intermediate skill level) This class will focus on traditional Shintani Wado-Kai Karate techniques, developing confidence, basic self-defence skills, body-space awareness, and beginner sports techniques and tactics.

Advances Class 8:00-9:30pm (Ages 13+ OR belt rank of Orange belt or higher): *Note- white-yellow-orange-green-blue-brown-black* This class will be well-rounded with focuses on advanced Shintani Wado-Kai Karate techniques, self-defence (combat), fitness training, sports tactics, and introduce Shindo techniques. (short staff) Space is limited. All participants must register through the YMCA of Saskatoon.

An additional Club fee is required. An annual fee will be collected online now! Ask Member Services for details or visit www.shintani.ca to begin the registration process.

Also called Octopush is a globally played limited-contact sport in which two teams compete to maneuver a puck across the bottom of a swimming pool into the opposing team’s goal by propelling it with a pusher.

Community Partner Groups Racquetball Have you been thinking about trying a new sport?

Racquetball Saskatchewan has partnered with the Y to run a new program. Fundamental movement skills include running, jumping, throwing, catching, kicking, and striking about the court and equipment learning skills. An excellent stepping stone to classes for ANY racquet sport! You can sign up for multiple classes per week.

The session runs from September 12th-December 4th (Classes may be cancelled based on registration).

Registration fees are $20/session.

Community Partner Groups Back of the Pack Running Club 10 week program Sept 12 - Nov 20, 2022 Tuesdays 6:30 - 7:30 pm Sundays 8 am - 9:30 am

Saskatoon's BEST Introductory to Running Program is BACK! The Back of the Pack Running Club is returning with its 8th training season for new and experienced runners who may have been away for a while. Coached by Mike McGuire (NCCP Coach Trainee), this 10-week program takes people from all age groups, all sizes, shapes and abilities and teaches you how to train safely, realistically, and with an end goal of a 5K final run - this season targeting Brainsport's Gingerbread Run happening later this fall.

Cost is $75 for new participants, $65 for returning alumni; includes a team shirt specific to the season and perks from the partnership with the YMCA of Saskatoonb.

Before and After School Care BASC Program Overview The Before and After School Care Program (BASC) offers a safe, fun, and stimulating environment for young people aged 5-12. The program supports the learning goals of the school community while allowing parents and caregivers to pursue their other commitments with peace of mind. The YMCA serves 13 school communities in Saskatoon, Martensville and Warman, and we are always interested in bringing our BASC program to more schools.
