Health and Fitness Weight and Cardio Room Guidelines The YMCA wants to ensure that youth have a safe environment to exercise.

Youth ages 10-12 must be accompanied by someone 18+ in the Cardio and Weight Room.

Youth ages 13-15 in the Weight and Cardio room using the "buddy system" at all times (Buddy System = two or more people working out together that are ages 13 and up).

Youths ages 16 and above are allowed in both areas.

Fitness Disclaimer You should consult your physician or other health care professional before starting any fitness program/class to determine if it is right for your needs, especially if you have pre-existing injuries or medical conditions.

Do not start any fitness program/class if your physician or health care provider advises against it.

Synergy Class is a multimodal group fitness class that challenges you physically and mentally while making fitness fun! This circuit training interval class uses Synergy 360 and other equipment pieces. "Adaptations for all fitness levels can be provided."

Kickboxing: Kickboxing isn’t just a good way to shred calories and build muscles. It also improves balance, coordination, and flexibility.

Step Class: Step aerobics is a classic cardio workout that targets your legs, glutes, and core while improving coordination and endurance.

In this high-energy class, you'll use a height-adjustable step platform to perform various step routines choreographed to upbeat music. Our experienced instructors will guide you through each step, helping you master the moves while keeping you motivated.

Health and Fitness Meet the YMCA Fitness Trainers Peggy Anderson Peggy has been involved in sports and activities from a young age. From dance to softball to synchronized swimming; both an athlete and a coach. She began volunteering as a fitness instructor at the Y in early 2015 and taught boot camp, strength and conditioning, synergy and cycle classes. She was certified as a Spin instructor in the early months of 2019. In 2019 she was certified as a personal trainer at the Y. Peggy’s primary interest is functional fitness, and her goal is to support and encourage people of all ages to live a healthy, active lifestyle.

Rob Friedt Rob specializes in functional training using kettlebells, TRX, ropes, etc.

Functional fitness includes movements such as walking, pushing, pulling, bending, squatting, lunging, and core. He’s here to encourage, motivate, and guide you through your health and fitness journey, whether increasing strength and muscle, improving your sport, losing weight, or just feeling and moving better. With years of experience in individual and group training, Rob is certified through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and CanFitPro and is a YMCA-certified Group Fitness Leader.

Paul Voisard Growing up around sports, Paul developed a passion for fitness that he loves to share with anyone who will listen. Coming from an athletic background, Paul loves helping people with programs based on functionality and increasing quality of life. He has worked with a wide cross-section of athletes and has trained everyone from retirees to high-performance athletes. Paul is the Fitness Manager at the YMCA of Saskatoon where he works to keep all the Y programs running smoothly. He can help you on your fitness journey and achieve your goals.

Health and Fitness Fitness Instructor Training (FIT) Cardio & Strength Instructor - Ages 16+ The YMCA Cardio & Strength Instructor Course is designed to certify instructors to deliver YMCA group fitness classes that fall into the category of cardio (e.g., choreography, step, box fit, etc.) or strength (e.g., bars and plates, kettlebells, muscle fit, etc.) and how to lead safe, effective and dynamic classes!

Member: $320.00 Non-Member: $360.00

Aquafit Instructor Certification Ages 16+ Level 1: Level 1 provides participants with choreographed programming to follow and learn from. The Level 1 Certification will allow an instructor to teach the provided choreographed programming at the YMCA of Saskatoon for up to 6 months. Level 1 Certification does NOT grant participants the ability to teach at non-YMCA locations.

In-person and registration dates: TBA Level 2: This level advances the instructor’s ability to develop choreography and class design and further enhances their ability to provide feedback and movement modifications to their participants. The Level 2 Certification allows the instructor to design and teach their own modified classes within YMCA and non-YMCA facilities.

Yoga Instructor Course – Ages 16+ In the YMCA Yoga Instructor Course, participants will learn how to be a YMCA Yoga Instructor, History and Philosophy, Pranayama – Breath Regulation, Asanas and Teaching Skills.

Aquatics YMCA Swimming Lessons Parent & Tot (6 mo-2 yrs)

Parents are REQUIRED to be in the water with the child.

Splashers:

It is designed as an introduction to water for infants and to teach parents about water safety and play water games. Entering and exiting the water, getting the face wet and learning various movement through the water is introduced.

Bubblers:

Designed for infants that are more comfortable in the water and to further teach water safety and play water games. Infants will become acquainted with breath control, floats, surface support and various movements through the water.

Preschool (3-5 yrs) Bobbers:

Children will be introduced to the water by doing bobs, assisted front floats and back floats, kicking while holding on to the wall and blowing bubbles.

Floaters:

Children will continue to develop their front and back floats unassisted and be introduced to front and back glide assisted.

Gliders:

Children will further develop their front and back glides by increasing their endurance. Children will also learn how to breathe on their side using side glide, be introduced to deep water skills and how to access EMS.

Divers:

Children will further develop all their swimming abilities and increase their endurance. Children will learn front and back swim and swim 10 meters on both sides as well. Children will also learn how to tread water for 10 seconds and learn about boating safety.

Surfers:

Children will continue to work on advanced deep-water skills, and surface support and be introduced to Front Crawl and Back Crawl.

Jumpers: Children will be introduced to diving into deep water and continue to develop Front Crawl and Back Crawl and eventually be able to swim the whole length of the pool.

Aquatics Learn To Swim (6-12 yrs) Otter:

Otter teaches children how to stay safe in the pool and develop their swimming skills. During this class, the focus will be on learning how to do front, back and side glides and also learn how to submerge under the water.

Seal:

Skills learned in Otter will continue to be developed and children’s endurance will be built. During this class, the focus will be on propulsion flutter kick, rolling the body from side to side for streamlined glides through water and introduction to deep water skills.

Dolphin:

Skills such as propulsive flutter kick and endurance will continue to be developed. Children then learn about coordinated breathing to ready themselves for front crawl and back crawl.

Swimmer:

Swimmers are introduced to swimming full lengths of the pool. They are introduced to front crawl and back crawl and are in deep-water for the majority of the class.

Star Program (8+ yrs)

Star 1:

Students further develop their Front Crawl and Back Crawl to initial standards.

Students will learn eggbeater, and whip kick on their back for elementary backstroke. Students will also have a 75-meter endurance swim.

Star 2:

Students will transition from learning the Whip Kick on their back to learning on their front for breaststroke and continue to develop their front crawl, back crawl and eggbeater. Students will have a 100m endurance swim.

Star 3:

Students will progress their Elementary backstroke and breaststroke to intermediate standards, and progress their Front Crawl and Back Crawl to advanced standards. With these progressions, they will continue to build their endurance to tread water for 2 minutes and have a 200m endurance swim.

Star 4:

While Breaststroke and Elementary Backstroke are progressing to advanced standards, students will develop scissor kicks which will progress into sidestroke. The endurance challenge will increase to a 350m swim.

Aquatics Star Program Cont.

Star 5:

Butterfly will be the new stroke at this level as they have advanced through all the other strokes. They will learn minor rescue drills by throwing buoyant aid to a swimmer. The endurance challenge increases to a 500m swim.

Star 6:

Swimmers continue to develop their endurance and lifesaving skills. Students will be introduced to how to teach a class as if they are swim instructors.

Basic first aid skills such as checking for hazards, calling for help, treating for shock and treatment of choking are introduced.

Adult (15+ yrs) Adult 1:

For Adults new to swimming. Learn the basics and develop water comfort. Always in the shallow end.

Adult 2:

For adults who have experience in swimming and can swim a whole length of the pool by themselves with an aid.

Adult 3:

For adults who have experience in swimming and can swim a whole length of the pool by themselves without aid.

Advanced Stroke Technique: Swimmers will continue to develop their strokes in order to be as efficient as they can be. They will also be doing swim-based workouts in order to work on strengthening their muscles and strokes. This is based on what the swimmers would like to get out of the course. This can range from opportunities to practice lifesaving skills to getting ready for future lifeguarding courses, stroke development, or endurance.

Aquatics Private & Semi-Private Swimming Lessons If you are looking for one-on-one lessons for you or your child, Private Lessons may be the answer. We offer two different options for Private Lessons. These lessons are student-led and strive to improve swimming abilities and skills for swimmers of all ages.

Private Lessons are one-on-one lessons. $31.5+tax / per 30-minute class (members) $36.75 +tax / per 30-minute class (non-members) Group-private lessons are for 2 participants, usually siblings, to learn their skills together. $39.50 +tax / per 30-minute class (members) $48.00+tax / per 30-minute class (non-members) Tuesdays: 4:30 pm – 8:00 pm Saturdays: 11:30 am –12: 00 pm Sundays: 3:30 pm – 4:00 pm

Note: Each time slot is 30-min. If you want a one-hour class you will be put into two slots There will be two instructors to teach privates on the dates mentioned above. *For private and semi-private swimming lessons, depending on the child’s swimming ability, a parent or guardian 16 years or older may need to be in the water.*

Aquatics Bronze Star Dates: TBA

Bronze Star develops swimming proficiency, lifesaving skills, and personal fitness.

Candidates refine their stroke mechanics, acquire self-rescue skills, and apply fitness principles in training workouts. Bronze Star is excellent preparation for success in Bronze Medallion and provides a fun introduction to lifesaving sports.

Prerequisites: Completed Star 6/Star Patrol Members: $89.25 Non-Members: $105.00 Additional Fees: Canadian Lifesaving Manual - $40.00 plus tax.

The book is optional for Bronze Star, however, it is Mandatory for Bronze Medallion and Cross

Lifesaving Society of Canada Bronze Medallion Dates: TBA Requirements: 13+ or have completed Bronze Star Bronze Medallion challenges the candidate both mentally and physically. Judgment, knowledge, skill, and fitness – the four components of water rescue – form the basis of Bronze Medallion training. In addition, candidates acquire the assessment and problem-solving skills needed to make good decisions in, on, and around the water.

Bronze Medallion is a prerequisite for assistant lifeguard training in Bronze Cross.

Lifesaving Society of Canada Bronze Cross Dates: TBA The Lifesaving Society’s Bronze Cross begins the transition from lifesaving to lifeguarding and prepares candidates for responsibilities as assistant lifeguards. Candidates strengthen and expand their lifesaving skills and apply the principles and techniques of active surveillance in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross emphasizes the importance of teamwork and communication in preventing and responding to aquatic emergencies.

Recognized as the standard measurement of lifeguard performance in Canada, National Lifeguard Award education is designed to develop a sound understanding of lifeguarding principles, good judgment, and a mature and responsible attitude toward the role of the lifeguard Requirements: Ages: 15+ Must have proof of Bronze Cross (Does not need to be current) and current Standard First Aid CPR-C Members: $148.55 Non-members: $193.75 Alert Manual - $43.00.

Kendo Kendo is traditional Japanese sword-fighting. Kendo players wear light armour and use split bamboo swords to attack targets on the armour. Kendo is practiced at full speed and full contact but is very safe due to the equipment and rules. Kendo matches are fast-paced battles of skill and mental strength.

Saskatoon Kendo Club is a member of the Canadian Kendo Federation, which is the sole governing body of Kendo in Canada under the International Kendo Federation.

Kendo accepts new Beginners in September and January ONLY, starting on the term start dates. People with previous Kendo experience can join at any time.

The minimum age is 12. Kendo does not have any special kids' classes; however, Kendo does have an open-door policy for the class. Parents are welcome to observe at any time. No Additional Club Fees are required.

Wednesdays: 7:00-9:00 PM AND Sundays: 3:00-5:00 PM

Open House: September 11 and 15 The first two classes in the September and January terms are free introductory classes also known as Open House. People can come and try Kendo without the need for a Y membership or a day pass, although they must have a photo ID as per the Y's policy.

Community Partner Groups Judo “Judo” is actually made of two Japanese words: “ju” and “do”. Ju means “gentle,” and do means “the way,” so put together, the word “Judo” literally translates to “the gentle way.” The development of character, mind, and body.

Judo is fun, safe, social, and active, and provides a positive learning environment. It also helps build confidence and coordination and promotes anti-bullying and self-protection.

Kinder Judo – Ages 4-6 years old Wednesdays 5:30 PM– 6:15 PM Please note that parents are required to come onto the mats to assist in the class.

Beginner Kid’s Judo – Ages 7 years and older Tuesday and Thursdays 5:00 PM-6:00 PM Please note that parents are welcome to come onto the mats to assist in the class.

Intermediate Kid’s Judo Ages 7+ and must have yellow belt Tuesday and Thursday, 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM High Performance Min 16 years old with Judo instructor approval.

Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 6:30 PM- 8:30 PM Judo Kata - Ages 12+ Tuesday and Thursdays 7:30-9:00 PM

Community Partner Groups Wado Kai Karate Family and Beginner Class – all ages (7 and under are required to have a guardian present) This class will focus on traditional Shintani Wado-Kai Karate techniques, developing confidence, basic self-defence skills, body-spatial awareness, and beginner sports techniques and tactics. confidence, basic self-defence skills, body-spatial awareness, and beginner sports techniques and tactics.

Tuesdays and Thursdays 6:30 - 7:30 pm This class will be split in two; advanced techniques and a beginner adult class (ages 13+) with focuses on advanced Shintani Wado-Kai Karate techniques, self-defence (combat), fitness training, and sports tactics, and introduce Shindo techniques (short staff).

Advanced Class - (Ages 13+ OR belt rank of Orange belt or higher) Tuesdays and Thursdays 8:00 - 9:30 pm Little Warriors - Ages 5-7 Tuesdays 6:00 - 6:45 pm Little Warriors is an activity-based karate class for younger students. This class will run concurrently with our family class and students will start and end in the main gym. This class will provide an introduction to karate skills for younger students not yet ready for the structure of the family class. Students ready to participate in the family class will be invited on a case-bycase basis.

We accept New Beginners in September and January ONLY, at the start of the session.

Community Partner Groups Underwater Hockey (UWH) Tuesdays and Fridays 8-9 PM Also called Octopush, UWH is a globally played limited-contact sport in which two teams compete to maneuver a puck across the bottom of a swimming pool into the opposing team’s goal by propelling it with a pusher.

Drop in class Tuesday and Friday: 8:00 - 9:00 pm Registration is recommended but not required.

Squash League Wednesdays 5:30 -9:30 PM This league allows YMCA members ages 12+ the opportunity to partake in regular squash programs and connect as a community. All skill levels are welcome!

An additional $5.00 Sask Squash Membership fee is required.

Did you know that the YMCA offers the public to rent spaces for personal or group use?

Bookings can be made at least one week in advance for the Gymnasium, Multipurpose Rooms 1 & and 2, Racquetball Courts, Squash Courts, Studio and Swimming Pool.

There is limited availability on Private Bookings. Please book well ahead. Bookings must be cancelled 48 hours before the booking occurs to receive a refund.

Schools Out Day Camps Join us in fun activities throughout the day, such as; swimming, gym activities, art creations, and science experiments. Each child is placed in a small group with children their own age and is led by one of our fantastic camp leaders.

Our Schools Out Day Camps are a fun and exciting way for children ages 5-12 to spend their day when school is out.

We offer beforecare starting at 7:30 AM and aftercare until 6:00 PM at no extra cost.

Registration is by the day. The cost is $50 per day.

Philanthropy By supporting the YMCA Strong Kids Fund You are ensuring children and families have access to programs such as swimming lessons, camps, before and after school programs, court sports, martial arts, mental health services, and leadership programs.

Annually the need to raise funds increases, and we have seen our request for assistance double in the last five years.

We work hard to never turn away a child or family who wants to be involved but needs assistance to cover a portion of the fees. For the 2023-2024 year, we will need to raise $275,000 to make sure everyone has an equal opportunity to take part in these programs.

The Y Champions fund is designed for people, 18 and older who may be down on their luck, in between jobs, supporting other family members, a senior on a fixed income or anyone just in need of short-term assistance.

By designating your gift to this fund, you can ensure people have access to a full YMCA membership, including fitness classes at swimming lessons, martial arts in court sports and helping to develop a sense of community.

We also partner with other community groups who benefit from taking part in YMCA programs and services. Your support to this fund may help a new Canadian we want to ensure has the benefits of belonging to the YMCA. This year our target is $60,000 to ensure that everyone who needs assistance will receive it.
