e have said it before, but now we realize more deeply that the YMCA is truly so much

more than our physical building. It’s hard to believe what a transformative two years this has been for all our lives and for the YMCA. As our community faced the pandemic, the YMCA of Metuchen, Edison, Woodbridge and South Amboy, and now Piscataway, stepped up in big ways to ensure our community would come out on the other side healthy in body, mind and spirit.

While we were glad to offer virtual services, we slowly embraced the return of in-person meetings, activities and more.

There are some cold hard facts to share as well. We experienced a loss in membership and total revenue while operating with a staffing shortage. As a result, there were some services and amenities that were suspended, some that have yet to be restored and some that will be reinvented.

RELIABLE, SAFE, AFFORDABLE CHILD CARE The Challenge

As many parents were getting ready to go back to work, finding reliable child care was difficult. The YMCA , along with the rest of the nation, was experiencing a labor shortage, lack of bus drivers, increased costs and waiting lists.

If we don’t adapt, we don’t serve families. So we fought! We reorganized to cater to smaller cohorts and developed new safety protocols. We enforced routine and addressed serious learning loss issues, anxiety and depression, especially among those most disadvantaged. Helping our families find affordable childcare options and providing additional financial assistance to those in need was our top priority to make sure our children stayed with us.

2,147 children supported in preschool, early childhood, before and after school and full-day programs offering learning support and care to help working families.

NEED

ENGAGING YOUTH ACTIVITIES The Challenge Parents struggled with trying to find a balance for the physical and mental well-being of their children and teens.

Response The Y provided a variety of much-needed options for children to learn critical life skills, stay active, safely socialize and stay fit. The Y put into place protective factors such as caring adults, safe learning environments and positive peer relationships that can help reduce the risk of stress, anxiety and depression.

HEALTHY LIVING NEED

SOCIAL AND PHYSICAL MOVEMENT The Challenge Exercise, while undoubtedly crucial under normal circumstances, has been essential to physical health and mental well-being during the pandemic. But with limits on capacity and shortened hours of operation during the pandemic, our members had fewer outlets to help them relax, reduce stress, and socialize.

Response Increasing the number of outdoor classes provided opportunities for members to exercise and see friends in a socially distanced environment. The Y continued to offer on-demand virtual classes, on average 33 per week, taught by our very own instructors, allowing members to connect with each other again.

264 members took advantage of YMCA360, using the videos 2,550 times. YMCA360 is offered free to our members.

Daily exercise is a great stress reliever. Our Ys were ready to get our members back through the doors to connect, support each other and lift us all up together.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION The Challenge Diversity, inclusion and equity are essential to helping Ys ensure that all segments of our communities are welcome and engaged. Without this movement, we can't carry forth our mission to provide everyone with an equal opportunity to reach their full potential with dignity.

Response The Y recognizes its unique positioning to provide a safe space for conversations and a welcoming environment for all. In 2020, the YMCA of MEWSA formed a DEI Committee to create a greater awareness of the need for diversity, equity and inclusion.

In 2021, the DEI Committee, co-chaired by Sharon List and Seema Pande, concentrated its efforts on addressing these questions: How do we respond to changing community demographics?

Key partners in the Y’s food security efforts are community organizations like Radiant Church in Piscataway, the First Presbyterian Church of Metuchen Food Pantry, First Presbyterian Church of South Amboy, and Middlesex County REPLENISH. As part of the YMCA food security team, volunteers run street drives, transport and deliver food, mobilize local farmers to donate and more. The food bins and collection jars are out year-round at the Y branches. The Teen Leaders Club would make sandwiches every day if they could.

This partnership was established to ensure that Piscataway’s new community center reaches out to everyone. On October 1, 2020 the doors to this new facility opened to the public. Though operations were restricted by safety protocols due to the pandemic, the community embraced the YPCC and the programs and services we offer. The YPCC now serves more than 3,800 families in the 83,000-square-foot facility that houses an indoor aquatic center with three pools, a full-sized basketball court with overhead running track, a fitness center, dance and art studios, youth activity and community rooms, a café and large meeting space.

Beyond traditional services like swimming, sports and fitness, the YPCC has served Piscataway during some really difficult times for the members of our community.

On Wednesday, September 1, the YPCC was called into action as the remnants of Hurricane Ida ravaged our community.

The YPCC halted operations as a YMCA and became an emergency shelter for residents whose houses were flooded, providing our neighbors with a safe place during or after the storm. For 52 hours the YPCC was a beacon of hope and safety for first responders, adults, seniors, families, children and animals.

In November, the YPCC partnered with Radiant Church to help feed the underserved families in our community.

Each month, over 250 families receive much needed food through this work. On January 6, in the heart of the Omicron wave, the center became a vaccination site where 300 community members helped protect themselves and others from the spread of this virus. And each month, pints of blood are collected in partnership with the New York Blood Center. Even with limited capacity, the YMCA has been able to provide life changing programs and service to ALL.
