2024 ANNUAL REPORT

PARTNERS FOR A HEALTHY COMMUNITY

AT THE Y, WE MAKE A DIFFERENCE BY FOCUSING ON THREE KEY AREAS: YOUTH DEVELOPMENT, HEALTHY LIVING AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY. WE WORK TO STRENGTHEN OUR COMMUNITIES BY INVESTING IN OUR KIDS, OUR HEALTH AND OUR NEIGHBORS. IN 2024, THROUGH ANNUAL IMPACT FUND SUPPORT AND GRANTS, OUR Y PROVIDED OVER $3.3 MILLION IN CHARITABLE ASSISTANCE, SCHOLARSHIPS, SUBSIDIZED AND FREE PROGRAMS TO MEMBERS AND PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS.

During 2024, 3,036 volunteers provided 30,510 hours of service throughout our Association as board members, storytellers, coaches, and program volunteers.

Our Community Impact

BY THE NUMBERS

305 Youth and Government delegates gained a deep understanding of the importance of civic literacy, advocacy, and state government.

Number of 1,340 campers experienced adventure and the great outdoors during overnight camp at YMCA Camp Hanes, while another 699 campers attended day camp.

Nearly 60,000 meals were served to 3,000 young people in our Summer Day Camps.

$1,851,080 in financial scholarships were given for memberships and programs.

We spent $2.1 million on new equipment for our members, potential members and guests.

174 youth in the Achievers programs learned about the tools needed for success in higher education and career opportunities in the 2023-2024 school year.

1,530 children participated in our fun and enriching Before and After School Academies in the 2023-2024 school year.

700 middle and high school students were provided with a safe space to go outside of school hours through the Reaching Our Potential teen membership program.

110 students from Title-I schools participated in our free Summer Learning Academies.

233 Literacy participants were served, seeking to improve their job and communication skills.

54 blood drives were hosted across the Association and 1,209 pints of blood were collected, saving 3,627 lives.

Dear Friends

Because of your invaluable support, 2024 was a landmark year for the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina. Your generosity was instrumental in helping us expand our reach, deepen our impact, and move closer to our vision of creating thriving communities of healthy, kind, and loving people.

Here’s just a glimpse of what we, as a community, accomplished together:

• 3,039 volunteers gave 30,510 hours as coaches, mentors, and leaders.

• 2,730 campers experienced adventure, growth, and summer fun.

• 972 children were served through Bright Beginnings, receiving new clothes, shoes, backpacks, and school supplies.

• 700+ at-risk teens joined our Reaching Our Potential initiative, gaining access to wellness, mentoring, and academic support.

• 2,680 students found safety and structure in our Before and After School programs.

• 174 Achievers gained college and career tools; 304 Youth & Government participants learned civic leadership.

• 233 Literacy participants were served, seeking to improve their job and communication skills.

• 1,209 pints of blood were collected at 54 drives, saving over 3,600 lives.

• $3.3 million in scholarships and subsidies made Y programs accessible to all.

• 58,000+ meals served to 2,800 children in summer day camps.

• Through LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA and other Evidence-Based Health Initiatives, over 2,500 individuals found support on their journey to a healthier life in 2024

In 2024, we also launched a bold new Strategic Plan focused on improving health, supporting youth success, advancing inclusion, and expanding our capacity to serve. One powerful example of this vision in action is the YMCA REACH Center at Winston Lake, opening in May 2025.

This new facility will be a vital hub for East Winston—offering not only traditional YMCA wellness programming, but also a Novant Health primary care clinic and Goodwill job training services. The Center will equip individuals with access to exceptional healthcare, educational resources and pathways to stable employment while fueling the local economy with 53 new Y jobs and supporting nearly 340 additional roles through workforce development efforts.

Together with partners like Novant Health, we’re expanding access to healthcare, combating loneliness among seniors, and giving teens safe spaces to grow. The Y continues to be a place where everyone—regardless of background—can find support, connection, and purpose.

We are deeply grateful for your continued support in our mission to build stronger, healthier communities. Your generosity has been instrumental in our work, and we thank you for standing with us.

In Spirit, Mind, and Body,

FATOU LO

Fatou Lo, a dedicated junior at Mount Tabor High School, is this year’s recipient of the Youth Leadership Award. Known for her exceptional leadership and service, Fatou has been an active participant in the Youth and Government (YAG) and Black Achievers programs for the past three years.

A rising star in the Youth and Government community, Fatou has earned recognition for her role as a model delegate, particularly standing out at the 2024 state conference where she received the “Outstanding Mock Trial Delegate” award. She is on track to serve as the chief junior marshall for the YAG program and is a candidate for the 2025 North Carolina Youth and Government Chief Justice position.

In addition to her work with YAG, Fatou is deeply involved in her school and community. She serves as the president of Mount Tabor’s Black Achievers chapter and the Multicultural Club. Fatou has also made a significant impact through her volunteer work, including founding a babysitting service that helps Senegalese immigrant families in her community by offering support while parents work or attend school. Her servant leadership extends further as she also serves as the public relations chair for the Winston-Salem Youth Advisory Board.

Fatou’s commitment to civic engagement led her to apply for the highly competitive United States Senate Youth Program, where she was selected for the prestigious Senate Page Program. This experience has further fueled her aspirations to study political science and economics in college, attend law school, and pursue a career in law.

With a heart for service and a drive to make a difference, Fatou Lo is a true role model for her peers and a shining example of youth leadership in action.

DR. OZ PRIM

Yadkin Family YMCA

Dr. Oz Prim, a native of Yadkin County, has been a staple of the Yadkin Family YMCA swim program since it opened in 2001, although his tenure as a top ambassador for the YMCA began in the fall of 1977, when he first started coaching swimming at the William G. White, Jr. Family YMCA.

In 2015, Oz joined the Yadkin Board and has served on the Yadkin Family YMCA Capital Campaign Cabinet, which most recently will help expand and update the Yadkin Family YMCA with an expanded Kids Zone, two new group exercise rooms and an expanded wellness floor. In addition to his commitment to the Cabinet, Oz also headed the Annual Impact Fund for three years and currently serves on the YMCA Christian Leadership Committee.

Raising two daughters at the YMCA, Oz credits his involvement with making him a better father and person, truly embracing the Y’s mission to “Love All and Serve All.” Part of being a better father and person includes making the community more enjoyable for others. As a long-time patron of the Yadkin County Park, Oz donated to the park for three shelters; one at the walking track, one at the disc golf course, and one at the playground. In recognition for his community support, the Yadkin County Park now has the Oz Prim Nature Trail, with a new trailhead and new bridges.

In addition to being a swim coach for 50 years, Oz is also a retired educator from Gardner-Webb University and Surry Community College. As a history professor, students at Surry loved taking his classes and hearing his stories, noting they were able to learn a lot in a fun and digestible way. He was one of the most highly-recommended professors to take at Surry.

His impact extends far beyond the doors of the YMCA, as he continues to foster relationships in the school system and the entire community. Oz is a lifelong member of Yadkinville United Methodist Church, currently serving on their leadership team. He is blessed to be part of the Monday night men’s group.

We are honored to induct Oz Prim into the Red Triangle Society for his indelible impact on everyone he comes in contact with, and his commitment to advancing the YMCA’s mission and vision, driving meaningful change and helping all people reach their God-given potential in spirit, mind and body.
