Driven by its founding mission, the Y has served as a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community for more than 175 years. The Y empowers everyone, no matter who they are or where they’re from, by ensuring access to resources, relationships and opportunities for all to learn, grow and thrive. By bringing together people from different backgrounds, perspectives, and generations, the Y’s goal is to improve overall health and well-being, ignite youth empowerment and demonstrate the importance of connections in and across 10,000 communities nationwide.
Founded in 1885, the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas serves thousands of men, women and children each year, regardless of age, income or background. Anchored in communities across North Texas, the Dallas Y has the long-standing relationships and physical presence not just to promise, but to deliver, lasting personal and social change. The Y ensures all people have equitable access to the essentials needed to become thriving members of the community. Daily, the Y bridges and fills individual and community needs as a catalyst for impactful change. The YMCA makes accessible the support and opportunities that empower people and communities to learn, grow and thrive, with three areas of impact: Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility. The Dallas Y is a volunteer-led organization driven by members, volunteers, staff and the community.
The YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas Foundation enables the Y to remain flexible and innovative, responding with timely solutions to the evolving needs of children and families in each of the communities served by local YMCA branches.
In 1996, the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas Foundation was chartered as a Texas non-profit corporation to manage the investment and distribution of the endowment of the Y.
The main goal of the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas Foundation is to support the mission, operations, and programs of the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas. In recent years, including 2022, the Foundation Trustees have distributed 5% of the fund, based on a 12-quarter average of the fund corpus. In 2022, this distribution was a little over $1.3 million dollars. Around two thirds of the distributions were directly determined by donor designations to various branches and programs. Part of the designated distributions have included providing approximately 20 four-year college scholarships to graduating seniors with a connection to the YMCA.

Brett Packer’s connection with the YMCA began in 1970, when he first stepped onto the Southeast YMCA football field and earned his inaugural participation trophy, a cherished keepsake. Joining his father as a volunteer in 1976, they returned to the YMCA fold after dissatisfaction elsewhere, culminating in memorable achievements like reaching the Turkey Bowl in San Antonio.
The move to Rockwall in 1979 and solidified the YMCA’s significance in Brett’s life, as he coached his daughter’s t-ball team and engaged in Indian Princesses activities, strengthening familial bonds. His commitment soared in 2000 when he joined the Board of Management of the Rockwall YMCA, garnering prestigious awards in 2008 and 2010 for his service.
Chairing the Capital Improvement Committee in 2013 marked a pivotal moment, underscoring Brett’s dedication to enhancing the YMCA’s infrastructure. His ongoing efforts, from forging partnerships with local schools to spearheading a legacy task force in 2021, epitomize values of love, service, and faith, leaving an indelible imprint on the Rockwall and YMCA communities. Dr. Klyne Smith has been a dedicated community leader and educator in the McKinney community and has been instrumental in the leadership development and structuring of the McKinney Family YMCA board.
W. Stephen Love’s journey is intricately intertwined with the culture of the YMCA and its profound community impact.
Growing up in a small Virginia town without a YMCA, Love’s early fascination with its cultural significance, tied to basketball’s invention, ignited his interest. It wasn’t until around 2001, in Plano, Texas, that Love fully immersed himself in the vibrant YMCA atmosphere.
Encouraged by this environment, Love embraced a volunteer role on the local advisory board, marking the start of his active engagement with YMCA management. His tenure witnessed pivotal moments, including the consolidation of two Plano YMCA locations, which aimed to enhance community impact.
Klyne helped grow the YMCA Day of Giving event in McKinney, established the Sports with the Blues, served as a volunteer for most of Youth & Government events, and helped to build and lead the McKinney Y board. Through his hard work and leadership since 2017, he has led the Leadership Committee, built the board service and committee structures, and helped lead the discussion of how the Y can best serve the McKinney community.
Through this process, Love deepened his understanding of the YMCA’s multifaceted mission, which extended beyond fitness to encompass childcare, social responsibility, and youth development.
Throughout Dr. Smith’s career, he has remained focused on community service by working as a basketball coach, academic mentor, Junior League advisor, Boys and Girls Club Board member, YMCA Board member, Education Unbound board member, and the Kappa Alpha Psi Guide Right Foundation Board member. Dr. Smith has also served on many other non-profit boards.
After nine years as a YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas Association board member, Love still champions equity and wellness initiatives in North Texas. His holistic belief in the YMCA’s transformative power continues to impact individuals and communities positively. In recognition of his service, we proudly honor W. Stephen Love with the Theodore Beasley Distinguished Leadership Award.
Dr. Smith has his own project management consulting company and teaches Computer Science and Software Engineering at the University of Texas at Dallas and Southern Methodist University. He challenges everyone to volunteer by saying, “when you volunteer, you feel good. So, go be selfish and go volunteer to help someone. It’s a great feeling.”

SAM WINSTEAD
VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARD
The Sam Winstead Volunteer of the Year Award is presented every year to a volunteer at each branch of the Dallas YMCA who has demonstrated exceptional commitment to a program or has helped further the goals of the YMCA in his or her community.
At 9 years old, I started as a camper at Camp Indian Cabin 8, eventually becoming a CIT and junior counselor. Camp was integral to my childhood, teaching valuable skills and fostering lifelong friendships. I continued involvement through alumni events and joined the board in 2020. Combining my passion for camp and advocacy for foster children, I partnered with Dallas CASA to send over 100 kids to camp. Witnessing the positive impact of camp on children’s lives drives my commitment to ensuring every child has access to similar experiences.

The YMCA Youth Character Award honors worthy young people who embody the four YMCA core values: honesty, respect, responsibility and caring. The award is to recognize those whose lives and achievements demonstrate an enduring commitment to qualities associated with good character.
Jackson is an outstanding young man who, like the mission of the YMCA, is about action! He visits the Grand Prairie Y regularly with his Grandma Nancy. On one of those trips, they noticed the food pantry was nearly empty. They ran to the grocery store and spent what money he had on hand, plus a little help from Grandma to fill it out. He then took on the task of finding odd jobs like washing cars to earn money. When he visits Grandma, they stop by the grocery store and spend almost weekly what they can to fill up the food pantry. No one really knows his reason for doing this, but it is a true blessing to our community. Jackson deserves recognition and praise for acting where he saw a need, as does his family for raising him to be this type of outstanding human. And it’s cool that he gets these quality moments with Grandma Nancy!
