What does it t ake t o do more good?
There are two types of Texans? those that ke Texas summers, and thosethat don? t
Full transparency, I amone of those who don? t
I?msure there are a few outlier type Texans that fal somewhere in themiddleof those twogroups, but they areprobably few and far between
Yep, those are Texans that don? t really care one way or the other if t?shotter thanHades or raning so hard t could strange a frog? they are just gad to be here. Personal y, I tend to avoid fo ksthat don? t take a pos tion? especally n Yoga cass
Summers at the YMCA of Central Texas are unique compared to our peer YMCAs across the countryand typ caly, the number of ch dren that a YMCA serves grows dramatical y during the summer months.
One could chalk th s occurrence up to kids beng out of schoo and parents suddenly needing al day childcare During the school year, some parents are comfortable with an o der brother or sister prov ding afterschoo atchkeycare for a few hours unti momor dad gets home, but, when t comes to all day care dur ngthe long summer months? that?sanother story al together
But, here in Central Texas, there?s the whole Texas heat th ng which I feel has created a whole sub-group of ?don?t-wanna-be-campers?that lean the way I do on the ?t?s hot out there?subject
There was also the nvent on of video games and door dash Combine thosecomforts with the propens ty for young people to try and convince their parents that today?s modern-day childrenmelt when exposed tosunight and we have a Central Texas anomaly
Regard ess of the reason, at our YMCA we serve less kids dur ng the summer thanwe do dur ng the school year? and there?s a catch? n the summer we have themin our care for a longer period
During the school year, between helping with homework, playing dodgeball, mak ng an al enout of a tongue depressor and provid ng a snack, the 2 5-3hrs of afterschool care goes by in a bur Br an Spence,(Br an leads our Afterschool programs) tels me our official 2025 high particpat on mark was somewherenorth of 4100 childrenserved a day? that?s a ot of kids, a lot of Go df sh snacks and more broken Crayo as than I can count
During the summer, we have about half the number of kids (approx 2500 a day), but we take care of them for 8-10 hours a day? and did I ment on it was hot?
It woud be understandable to focus on the potential risks nvolved withcar ng for 2500 hot/sweaty childrenfor 8-10 hours a day for twelve weeks of the summer There are obv ousy count essopportun ties for mischief, accidents and al sorts of other things that show up on forms titled ?incident report?or ?behavioral contract?
On the other hand, one coud take an optimistic v ewpo nt and consider the extraordinary benefitsof gettingto mentor and teach all those k ds for an extended per od of t me Summer camp is ground zero for pos tiveyimpacting a young person?s life It?s also ground zero for br bing hot kids with a comp mentarypopsicle? t?s amazing how orderly of a l ne a bunch of summer campers wil make if you promise thema pops cle
The other day, I was remnded of just how mpactful our YMCA programscan be As I understand t, we have a summer camp counselor at our Twin Lakes camp who started his exper ence withour camp as a youngcamper Hs loveof our Tw n Lakes Camp, fr ends made, and our incredibe camp staff brought th s young boy back tocamp every summer until we eventual y h red h mat the age of 18 Th s young man has exceledin his role as a camp counselor and hasgiven the ?gift of camp?to so many young campers? just l ke he enoyed A couple of weeks ago, dur ngan activity, this counselor coll ded with a camper and injured himsef Upon recouperat on, the counsellor?s father caled Lucy from our HRoff ce and stated that he d d not want the Yto pay any of the med ca bil s for h s son He stated that he wanted our resources to go towards the camp or kids n need who wanted to come to camp Furthermore, the father made a very generous contribut on to camp because of how much Camp Twin Lakes has meant to hisson and their entire family
I don? t know about you, but that father and sons?vaidat on of our YMCAprograms makes meth nk that Texas summers are not so bad? in fact, I sort of feel l ke I could get used to a couple 3-d git days? I amlooking forward to next year
Sncerely,
Jeff Andresen President /CEO
