Dr. Michael Rao
President, Virginia Commonwealth Universit y and VCU Health System
Michael Rao, Ph.D., ser ves as president of Virginia Commonwealth Universit y and VCU Health System. Under President Rao’s leadership since 2009, VCU and VCU Health are modeling the future of a truly public research universit y and health system by putting the changing needs of students and patients first with a focus on accessibilit y, excellence and impact.
During President Rao’s tenure, VCU has raised graduation rates by double digits, greatly increased financial aid, raised patient satisfaction, nearly doubled sponsored research funding, and brought to Richmond a comprehensive children’s hospital. VCU is a National Science Foundation-ranked top 50 public research universit y, and is also ranked by U.S. News and World Repor t as one of the top 20 most innovative public colleges in the U.S. and in the top fif th of global universities. Richmond’s VCU Medical Center is ranked the No. 1 hospital in Richmond and is the only Level I trauma center in the region that is verified in burn and pediatric and adult trauma care. VCU has won the Excellence in Diversit y award from INSIGHT Into Diversit y magazine for five years in a row, and VCUar ts Qatar is internationally recognized for excellence in ar t and design.
Sitting at the nexus of access and excellence, VCU is a unique mix of high-impact research, academics and health care, paired with a diverse student population. President Rao is immediate past chair of the nonprofit American Council on Education and a board member with the Coalition of Urban Ser ving Universities, for whom he ser ves as representative for the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities. He and his wife Monica, a native of Bombay, India, have two sons.

Pastor Pete Bowell
Pete Bowell has ser ved as Senior Associate and Co-founding Pastor of Hope Church in Richmond, Virginia, for 28 years. He is married to Meg. They have three grown children, and he is proud “Poppy” to three grandchildren. He is saved by grace.
Rabbi Sherr y Grinsteiner
Rabbi Sherr y Grinsteiner was born and raised in Israel and has been a dedicated Jewish educator for over 25 years. She has developed and led educational programs for youth and adults in Jewish institutions in Iowa, Texas, and Colorado. Rabbi Grinsteiner received her ordination from Aleph, the Jewish Renewal Ordination Program, in Januar y 2021, and is ser ving as a Congregational Rabbi at Congregation Or Atid.
Rev. Lindsey Freeman
Rev. Lindsey B. Freeman is an ordained Elder in the United Methodist Church and ser ves next door to the Y at Welborne UMC. In her years of ministr y, she has ser ved in local churches, college campuses, and at the denominational headquar ters in Richmond. Lindsey is passionate about preaching, teaching and encouraging folks as they live into their calling. She is a cer tified Enneagram coach. Lindsey is married to Matthew Freeman, and mama to Bronw yn & Myles.
Zulfi Khan
Zulfi Khan is a retired businessman and a passionate communit y activist who has proudly called Henrico home since 1989. As a board member of the Islamic Center of Henrico, Zulfi plays a vital role in promoting inclusivit y and understanding among diverse groups.
