What is SJOC?

Singapore Junior Original Concert (SJOC)

Featuring children aged 15 and below who are students of the Yamaha Music Education System courses, performing their own compositions.

The concert sets the stage for these young talents to express their creativity through their original music works.

Motif Improvisation Segment A unique and essential part of the SJOC is the segment on ‘Improvisation’. With motifs provided by members of the audience, witness the ability of the young composers as they create music on the spot!

IN THE TOY GLOBE Composer: Abigail Zaneta Lukas

Adventures in The Toy Globe

The song is about the adventures of a few tiny LEGO figures that came to life.

They ended up trapped in a toy globe.

In section A, the toys were walking both excitedly and nervously. In section B, a kid spun the toy globe. In section C, the toys ended up in the air. They enjoyed it.

In section D, they fell into an empty island, and then they tried to remember the moment they were in the air.

In the final section, they continued walking. But suddenly, they got sucked into a purple portal, then came back to reality, where they were no longer alive and had no idea what they had gone through.

BALLOON

ADVENTURES Composer: Shino Kiyota

Balloon Adventures

"Balloon Adventures" is a composition that tells a vivid story through music. The piece begins with a light, skipping melody, painting a picture of a little boy joyfully jumping and dancing with his bright balloon.

As he jumps and dances, he suddenly trips and the balloon bursts, leaving him feeling sad. Just when everything seems lost, a friendly bear appears with a new bunch of colourful balloons.

The music then grows lively and cheerful again, showing the shared laughter and playful games of the two new friends.

This delightful composition shows the magic of friendship and the happiness found in unexpected surprises. We hope you enjoy this fun musical journey!

RAILROAD EXPRESS!

Railroad Express!

Railroad Express is an exciting musical adventure that takes the listener on a journey across the tracks in three distinct sections: 1. The journey begins with a fast and cheerful pace, capturing the excitement of the train pulling out of the station and gradually picking up speed.

2. The music slows down into a beautiful, grand section, passing through majestic mountains and serene open fields, offering a moment of wonder.

3. The train speeds up again for a thrilling, rhythmic destination,

Timeless Galax y

My song is about a magical forest full of amazing creatures. Some of the creatures are not aggressive and tame, but others are scary and dangerous. The forest is mysterious and no one knows everything about it.

One day, some people became very curious and decided to explore the forest.

As they walked deeper inside, they met strange

creatures

and

had

some

frightening experiences.

In the end, they found their way out of the forest and escaped safely.

CATHARSIS Composer: Chee Zee Ching

C atharsis

Catharsis is a release in sound, raw before it is resolved. It opens without a steady pulse, hesitant and searching, reflecting emotional disorientation.

As the piece locks into a 5/4 metre, an epic theme emerges, driven by momentum and restrained intensity. When the motif returns, dissonant harmonies complicate it, suggesting unresolved conflict rather than closure.

The theme later reappears in a different key, altered by the tension it has endured.

In the final section, the right hand’s running notes push relentlessly forward while the left hand carries the theme beneath, a candid portrayal of release that is not peaceful, but necessary.

THE CHRONOS ODYSSEY

The Chronos Odyssey

A musical adventure through four worlds across time and space: 1. Ice Age – High notes mimic falling snow, while a warm ensemble captures a family of mammoths journeying across the icy landscape.

2. Ancient Jungle – Percussive rhythms bring the sounds and energy of a wild jungle to life.

3. Space Battle – Bursts of energy create the excitement and tension of a battle in deep space.

4. Grand Finale – A warm, majestic return of the main theme, celebrating the wonder and vastness of time and space.

Gif t of The Rain

I like the rain. When I hear raindrops, it makes me feel calm and safe. When it rains, the plants and flowers look happy and grow bigger.

Rain brings important water that everyone needs, so I think it is kind. Sometimes the rain falls very hard and loud, and it shows how strong nature can be. But the rain is not always scary.

After the heavy rain stops, a beautiful rainbow can appear in the sky. In this music, I wanted to show soft rain, heavy rain, and the bright rainbow that comes after the rain.

炒面

炒面 (Fried Noodles)

This composition is about my journey trying to find my favourite fried noodles.

As a kid, I loved the noodles that my old school served. I would often eat them during recess. However, since I transferred to another school, I have never been able to find the exact noodles my old school served.

I hope you can find the things that you enjoy in life.

Memories

I named my song Memories because I wanted to share the things I remember that matter most to me. When I was composing it, I thought about the numerous beach holidays with my family and my cousins, laughing and playing at the playground with my friends, and spending time at home with my family…

I also remembered quiet moments, like daydreaming or listening to music with mummy before bedtime. I feel happy but also a little sad and nostalgic, as these happy memories are in the past and I am growing up so fast.

I wanted the music to sound gentle and emotional, so people can feel how precious these memories are to me…

BESTIES ON THE BEAT

Bes ties On The Beat

“Besties on the Beat” tells the story of two best friends who live close to each other and attend the same school. They share a strong bond, always looking out for one another and enjoying every day together.

One day, they learn that one of them has to move to a different school. The news makes both friends upset, and their sadness leads to an argument as they struggle with the thought of being apart.

After the disagreement, they return home feeling lonely and unhappy. A few weeks later, the friend returns to the same school to continue studying there.

Reunited at last, the two friends are overjoyed, hug each other warmly, and promise to remain best friends forever.

DANCE OF Dim Sum

Dance of Dim Sum

I enjoy being surrounded by family and filled with the delicious aromas of dim sum. Dance of Dim Sum is a musical celebration of these special moments spent with my parents. I want to capture the joy, warmth, and excitement of a festive feast.

In this piece, every dish on the table comes to life with its own distinct personality and mood. As the music unfolds, you will hear different rhythms and melodies representing a vibrant variety of dim sum. Each motif mirrors a different flavor and texture, weaving together into a spirited choreography of food and family.

Through Dance of Dim Sum, I want to share the pure delight and togetherness of sharing a grand feast with everyone. Bon appétit, and enjoy the music!

I had gone through bouts of school bullying incidents. I am attending counselling and resilience training sessions for PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder and recovering. No shame in sharing, as things can happen, as one teacher quoted. This year marks a new adventure for a change, as I am transferred to a new secondary school.

Music is therapeutic. The love for music steered my focus as I managed my piano and violin examinations in 2025. This song captures an emotionally complex range between past and present; sorrow and joy in a tango.

This is my vision of an alternate reality, the dream of a peaceful and joyful celebration of life.

“Breeze” tells a story about a child sitting quietly and feeling the wind on a peaceful day. At first, the breeze is soft and gentle, moving lightly through the air. Then the wind grows stronger and the sky feels a little darker, like clouds passing by.

But just as quickly as it changed, the wind calms down again. Everything feels safe

Through this journey, the piece shows how feelings can shift and grow, just like the breeze, and how peace always returns in the end.

This composition is a Broadway-inspired orchestral work that tells the story of my extraordinary primary school journey.

The music captures the various moods and classroom dynamics over 6 years — expressed

the

contrasting

themes of curiosity and playfulness, friendships and separations, failures and triumphs.

The

various

strings,

woodwinds,

— and

percussion — represent the different groups of friends and teachers I have met along the way, each one shaping the person I am today.

Chasing Starlight

One night after a surprise rain, light from street lamps scattered across the wet pavement like tiny stars.

Each time I stepped forward, the “stars” seemed to dart away—bright, slippery, impossible to catch. I laughed and chased them anyway, as if the light was inviting me into a playful game, pulsing energy in my heart.

Not because I thought I would catch one, but because the chase itself was joyful.

This piece reminds me to keep dancing, to keep reaching for my dreams, and to keep believing with a joyful heart.

VELVET DRIFT Composer: Charlot te Tan Yu Xuan

Velvet Drif t

This composition is in Latin Jazz style, inspired by the music played in cafés to help people relax. I wanted to compose this song because I wanted to challenge myself to compose a more modern piece.

The greatest challenge I faced in the process of composing this piece was the development of the A-section.

I hope that listeners will be able to feel relaxed when they listen to this piece.
